I`m not saying it couldn`t be new, I only thought that we could have overlooked something. If it`s new, it could be a good sign for getting more soon. Remember in Septemper, after a long dry time first there was a diary entry and then another one and the second WOMBAT. Jo said once that updates without much times between them show that she has sparetime and is not working hard.

The fansites thing is new. :)

I think this means that Jo is done with editing, and she finally has time to look around fansites and boards, and update her own site. I especially liked how she remarked that there are a few editorials on HarryPotterFanZone.com that are very revealing!

*goes to read all the editorials*

Maybe we will get updates more often, even if they are small. Any news is good news!

If we can't have a wombat, a journal entry would be really great! :D

Yes, it is the same. Jo said this:

How could I not love a fansite whose contributors include people named Thaddeus and Aunna? This is a great Australian site with an impressively young staff who have produced some really insightful editorials; I wish I could highlight a couple of them, but that would be waaaay too revealing. If you head over to FAQs, however, you will see some of the open letter questions answered (at long last, yes, I know... but I had to finish "Deathly Hallows" first)
So congratulations and thanks, Andy, to you and all your talented colleagues.
:)

Its too bad she doesn't specify which editorials she is referring to, I guess I will just have to read them all! :D

RE: New Fan Site Award on JKRowling's Official Site goes to www.HarryPotterFanZone.com! (http://www.HarryPotterFanZone.com)

Congratulations Harry Potter Fan Zone! Great Site - nice design - not too busy - easy to navigate - I can’t wait to read the editorials!

It continually amazes me how well these fan sites are run and how young the staff are, not too mention the contributions from the fans themselves. As a parent, it gives me great hope for the future. JKR has not only inspired readers, but writers, artists and entrepreneurs as well.

“If you head over to FAQs, however, you will see some of the open letter questions answered (at long last, yes, I know... but I had to finish "Deathly Hallows" first)”

I am really glad she put that in. I guess this explains why we did not hear from her for so long. I was beginning to wonder if her extended mourning period was because book 7 was so tragic. I was worried about having millions of depressed fans at the end of July (talk about your dementors breeding). I was unaware the editing was not completed. Yes, that was very good news indeed.

No, no, there was something about hemispheres... *frown* I remember someone explaining it. One of the Aurors, I think? Like I said, I hate time zones, and I'm really struggling to remember the explanation. Oh, it was Nicole:

Australia should get the book at the same time as the UK does. I believe that would be around 9 am local time for at least some portion of Australia. Basically, everyone between the International Dateline (eastward from there) and the UK should have the possibility of getting the book at the same time (not the same local time, of course!), though there are surely tons of places in between where bookstores will not be open at such a time (1 am, 2 am, 3 am, etc. local time). Not every place can afford to host a "midnight" party--especially the places where "midnight" release is not an option!

From here (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?p=4325450&highlight=timezones%2C+australia#post4325450).

People in the US apparently get it at their midnights, though. And that sentence is a grammatical nightmare *cries*

Edit: I just read here (http://news.sky.com/skynews/article/0,,30000-1265397,00.html) that Jo donated money to the reward for finding Madeleine McCann. I'm really hoping and praying (like everyone, I should imagine) that they find her safe soon. She's only four.

Everyone, we have a new journal entry. See, spoilers are bad! :)

MAY 14th

A couple of weeks ago (April 28th, if you want to go and search the archive) the Potter fansite The Leaky Cauldron posted an editorial on potential spoilers for "Deathly Hallows". It made me laugh, but I was also incredibly moved and grateful.

We're a little under three months away, now, and the first distant rumblings of the weirdness that usually precedes a Harry Potter publication can be heard on the horizon. The Leaky Cauldron's early mission statement on spoilers (ie, don't, and we're not putting them up if you do) is deeply appreciated by yours truly.

I add my own plea to Melissa's for one reason, and one only: I want the readers who have, in many instances, grown up with Harry, to embark on the last adventure they will share with him without knowing where they are they going.

Some, perhaps, will read this and take the view that all publicity is good publicity, that spoilers are part of hype, and that I am trying to protect sales rather than my readership. However, spoilers won't stop people buying the book, they never have - all it will do is diminish their pleasure in the book.

There will always be sad individuals who get their kicks from ruining other people's fun, but while sites like Leaky take such an active stance against them, we may yet win. Even if the biggest secret gets out - even if somebody discovers the Giant Squid is actually the world's largest Animagus, which rises from the lake at the eleventh hour, transforms into Godric Gryffindor and... well, I wouldn't like to spoil it.

Spritey
May 14th, 2007, 10:47 am
*lets out hysterical shriek of glee* Jo! You came back! *hugtackles her* Pls don't get restraining order?

And she's totally right, you know. Spoilers are bad. The ASA is good. Report function for greater justice!

Hee, and now my day is so very made *glows*

Edit: I just reread this bit:

I add my own plea to Melissa's for one reason, and one only: I want the readers who have, in many instances, grown up with Harry, to embark on the last adventure they will share with him without knowing where they are they going.

And promptly burst into tears. I think I need to get something to eat, sharpish  Though like I said, she's right, and I hope I don't get any major spoilers this time... I don't mind little ones, but I do not want to know who Snape may or may not kill. Really.

But Jessica was right about all this, and her devotion has paid off. Squiddy is Gryffindor. Of course...it's all clear now. Why did I ever think that Harry was Gryffindor's heir? We've had a thread about Dumbledore being the Giant Squid. And we've had intense speculation that Dumbledore was the heir of Gryffindor. There you go. Dumbledore is the Giant Squid and he is also the reincarnation of Godric Gryffindor. So we will see more of Dumbledore in DH, only he'll be rather big and wet with lots of tentacles.

Melissa Anelli on Leaky Cauldron is one of the people who was invited to interview JKR after HBP came out, and she's the one who wrote the Spoiler essay. The other interviewer was Emerson Spartz on Mugglenet, but I recall her telling him in the interview that she didn't have time to read all the comments over there.

Weren't the corned beef-loving otters from Bristol a CoS theory? Though I kind of worry about Jo ever reading this thread, since I have a habit of acting like an idiot far more often than I'd like... *shifty eyes*
Definitely! Although we can't guarantee that no one else came up with the idea either, it was most definitely posted here on the night we learned that HBP was complete. That thread has been deleted now, though.

Squiddy is mentioned in most of the books!squid, giant creature from Muggle legends or mythology Muggle
Rating Unknown
The largest invertebrate known to Muggle science, the giant squid can grow to 70 feet. Speaking more specifically, at least one giant squid lives in the lake near Hogwarts castle, and seems to be more or less friendly toward the inhabitants.

* the Weasley twins and Lee Jordan tickle its tentacles (PS16)
* lazily crosses the lake (PA22)
* rescues Dennis Creevey (GF12)
* eats toast (GF18)
* swims with students after exams (OP38)

I found it! Here is the original reference to corned beef loving otters in Bristol, as referred to by Jo in her Rumours section (http://www.jkrowling.com/textonly/en/rumours_view.cfm?id=28), posted in the JKR Official Website thread, 21st December 2004 and quoted in an old Layers thread! This was based on the riddles we had to solve to open the door. Originally Posted by Machiavelli

He did in previous years. It will be interesting to see if he does this year. I have been following the no birthday wishes means don't survive the series thoughs. Jo said that someone dies that wasn't meant to die and someone else gets a reprieve that wasn't supposed to (I think I have that right.) So, based on that, does Draco get birthday wishes? It seems unlikely to get a Wombat in the middle of the week, but seeing as how the last 3 updates have been exactly 3 days apart, it is possible we could get another update, maybe even a Wombat, on Thursday, May 17th.

If necessary, it may even set up this Friday, the 18th, as being a good candidate for a Wombat, but who knows? Either way, here's hoping we get another update on Thursday. :)

Interesting what JKR said about spoilers on her website. Of course if someone on the "inside" (printers, etc) leaks DH that would be horrible.

But something the US publisher said about DH really bothered me. He said on TV that he "sobbed and sobbed" while reading DH. Now, if DH made a 40 something year old man sob and sob, what effect will it have on a 7 year old child? I'm really concerned about that because as adults we can forget the impact things can have on children, especially when passions run as high as they do with HP. I almost wish JKR had been more forthcoming about what will happen in DH to avoid any negative impact any surprises could have on children.

I think that very different things would adult`s and children make cry. It isn`t because someone is dying, that makes adult`s cry. The line, where Neville got the house points at the end of PS and so wins the cup for his house makes me cry, every time I read it. And it is a very hopeful situation.

And don`t forget, Arthur Levine is the publisher, therefore you have to consider marketing reasons too.

When I read the last three books to my daughter I was crying in some places too. She wasn't. Kids don't have the same experience and associations as adults do and what upsets us doesn't necessarily upset them, especially the sentimental parts. So I wouldn't worry much about kids at this point, but I'll be sure to have a whole box of tissues nearby when I read it! And don't forget Jo is a mother. She also cares a lot about her young readers.

The biggest tearjerker for me, was the bit where Molly hugs Harry "like a mother" in the hospital wing at the end of GoF. :upset:

Yes, you have to read between the lines: "I sobbed and sobbed because I knew I'd never find another book series this popular for the rest of my career."

Also, parts of the story may be heartbreaking in a different way ~ Harry is supposed to find out something about Lily. Anything about his mother has always been the most important thing to Harry, and yet he hasn't dwelt on that since Book One. So I can see that being very emotionally powerful.

*JINX* I wrote nearly the same thing as Anabel at the same time! How often will that ever happen again? *faints*

RADA is Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, I believe it is only based in London and lots of people call upscale actors "lovey" with two air kisses - does that explain it...

So I was just trying to say that she has paid her dues in England so may not be noticable as the "American" in the films.

I have a strange theory on the WotM according to birthdays:

In May, the WotM was Helga Hufflepuff, and during May, we had Professor Sprout's birthday, who is from Hufflepuff House.

In June, we have Draco's (a slytherin's) birthday. Will we get Salazar as the WotM next?

July has both Neville's and Harry's birthdays, both Gryffindors. And so we might get Godric Gryffindor as the WotM in July.

I was thinking there might be a Ravenclaw birthday in August, but the only birthdays listed for that month are Percy and Ginny (again, both Gryffindors). However, we don't know Luna's birthday. Could Luna's birthday be in August, and we just don't know about it? That would correspond to August being Rowena Ravenclaw's month.

Which would make her either a Leo or a Virgo. The irony of her being a Virgo - like Hermione - would be awesome, especially since she's not exactly the type to do what's expected of her, is she now? :D However, Leo would fit better, perhaps... I don`t think that Snape will ever be a Wizard of the Month. Those are all famous wizards and Snape`s hate to James began because he was so much more noted than him. Remember his first lesson with Harry, the little boy that got all the attention.
Maybe Ron and Hermione will get there place among the famous wizards after the final battle, but not Snape. He is the one that will always stand behind, never get glory he deserves potentially.

I don`t think that Snape will ever be a Wizard of the Month. Those are all famous wizards and Snape`s hate to James began because he was so much more noted than him.

I guess that kind of depends on what the truth is. If everything he did was to save Harry then he will go down in history (of course he will go down in history for killing DD).

But Snapes`s problem is that nobody ever heard of his big doings nor will the ever hear. Nobody appreciates him, we heard was Bellatrix thought about him. Snape saved Harrys`s live in in PS and once more in PoA. Left are a statement of Fudge: "Fellow seems quite unbalanced". Snape is the outsider and those get never the rewards - deserved or not.

That would be awesome. Now I really wish she had done Harry, Hermione and Ron before DH came out
If she'd done this, though, wouldn' she have had to divulge some of their goings on from after the time-scale of the series? Maybe she will do the three of them after DH has come out, rather than before it does, because we will have read the epilogue at the end of the book and know what happnes to them, the WotM cards for them could just add little tidbits.

Apologies if this has been noted in this or an earlier version, but I could not find it.

If you go to the 'Links' page, you will find the book 'Ancient Runes Made easy' Click on it and you will see various runes representing the numbers 0-9.

In the rubbish bin page, you will notice these same runes scattered across the top of the page. Translate them, and you will get the numbers 31 07 1968. 31 July is of course Harry's and Jo's birthday, but what about the year 1968? Jo turned three that day. Anyone know of any particular significance to this date?

Have a look at the easter egg description (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=90143).

You will see those icons from left to right:
Runespoor 3
Unicorn 1
Demiguise 0
Unknown 7
Unicorn 1
Hydra 9
Salamander 6
Quintaped 5 (the last on the right site isn`t an Acromatula).

Gives you the correct birthday 31.07.1965

I think that very different things would adult`s and children make cry. It isn`t because someone is dying, that makes adult`s cry. The line, where Neville got the house points at the end of PS and so wins the cup for his house makes me cry, every time I read it. And it is a very hopeful situation.

And don`t forget, Arthur Levine is the publisher, therefore you have to consider marketing reasons too.I see your point. The whole scene in the chamber in CS makes me cry even when I see it in the movie. When Voldemort tells Harry what good a songbird and a hat will do, I mentally yell back "kick your ***, that's what they'll do." But there is a difference between crying a bit and "sobbing and sobbing."

As for marketing, HP is a done deal for them. It doesn't matter what they publish, it will sell. And since no one but the "inner circle" sees the manuscript there can be no marketing worries in advance of publication.

:upset:That is an especially moving scene when Harry gets to experience a mother's love.

So I can see that being very emotionally powerful.I see your points. But still I worry since children have invested so much emotional energy into the HP series. If it makes an adult "sob and sob" (and I do think Arthur Levine made the comment in a literal way because he follows it up with saying the book was very emotional) what could it do to a child?

If the book is that emotional, I hope JKR and Levine showed the manuscript to a mental health professional who specializes in children. As adults we can asssume we know what a child can handle, but a professional would know best especially since HP is not a random story but a phenomenon many children hold close to their hearts.

I really wouldn't worry too much about that. Jo is a mum and she cares deeply about her young fans. Adults cry over sentimental aspects of a story that kids barely notice. Even death is something kids handle differently to adults. I really do trust Jo not to write anything that would harm her young readers.

You know what would be good right about now? A lovely little out of context paragraph from DH for us to tear apart for the next two months, like the Lion Man from HBP (who sounded so incredibly cool, but in reality... not.) That would totally tide me over - well, until we get tired of the arguments over punctuation placement, at least :D

I'm also really aware of time running out for the WOMBATs, though. I just know that if it gets left much longer, I'll somehow have lost my two .txt files and that email containing my student code. I just know it.

You can`t get a student ID at the moment because there isn`t a test to make. When the next WOMBAT appears you will asked if you have already an ID. If not, you will get one at the end of the test. Make sure to copy the ID (writing down leads to problems because of mistakes with o/0) and mail it to yourself. A few days later the results are delivered and you could see it via entering your code in the student card on her desk.
