Books that became good movies

Pretty much, if you read a book and then saw the movie and thought they did a good job with it, I'd like to know. I, for some unknown reason, enjoy this stuff.

I thought they did a pretty good job with Eragon. It was a little short and it happened differently, but I enjoyed it.

Da Vinci Code was awesome, they did a great job with that.

I liked the first three Harry Potters. There was some stuff that made me mad, but I thought they were overall pretty good, considering they had to make the books 2 hours long. Third one mainly because of the little bit of R/Hr and Gary Oldman

The new Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the one with Johnny Depp) was a lot like the book. There were even some lines that they took right from the book.

Narnia was pretty good. I didn't like the book that much, it kind of bored me, but I loved the movie.

Series of Unfortunate Events was alright. I only like the first couple of books, because then the same thing happens in each book, just at a different place. The movie was pretty good though

There's lots of stuff I'm forgetting, but that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Mods, sorry if it's been discussed

Don't kill me, Lord of the Rings purists, but I thought that Peter Jackson did a great job with the movies! He only changed what he had to, and they ended up good. Mostly the books are better, but some of the movie changes are pretty logical, like no Tom Bombadil (he annoyed me SO MUCH!!!!)

Other awesome book-movies are...
1. Chronicles of Narnia
2. First three Harry Potters
3. The Da Vinci Code

And that's about all of the good ones I know. I thought that the Da Vinci Code movie was better than the book because Dan Brown was not such a great writer, I thought. The story was good, the writing was bad. Kind of like the Star Wars sequels by Timothy Zahn.

Holes by Louis Sachar is an excellent book. The whole plot ties up in a nice little bow at the end - everything in the book turns out to be important. And the movie was a very good adaptation - no major plot points were left out. It helps that the book is rather short and tightly constructed.

The Lord of the Rings movies were great I thought. Of course the books are better but Peter Jackson did a great job with the films.
Also I thought To Kill A Mockingbird was a great book-> movie. Fantastic story, well acted.

The Lord of the Rings. It's so difficult to adapt that, with all their defects, JAckson's movies are a great piece of work
Rebecca
Master and Commander. I'm not a fan of the novels, but I love the movie.
Cyrano de Bergerac, though that's not a book, but a play...
Sleepy Hollow is one of the few movies I've liked more than the book. But the book disappointed me a lot, so...
Anatomy of a murder. I haven't read the novel, but the film is great! James Stewart is splendid.

I think that the first four Harry Potter movies were good. I was disappointed in the third movie, at first, but I loved the R/Hr hints!

The Da Vinci Code was a good movie, too. It didn't cut important parts to the story.

I haven't read The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants and The Chronicles of Narnia, but the movies were wonderful as well.

I didn't like The Da Vinci Code. Somehow the plot seemed a lot weaker on film to me and I didn't see much character development. The Hours is a wonderful example of a book being translated onto the screen well. I find Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption and The Shining to be the best Stephen King adaptations. There are countless others, too - most of the good films out there are based upon novels, in my opinion.

I really thought they made the first 3 Harry Potter's awesome. The 4th one bought fans of Harry Potter to shame [In my opinion] and the 5th was good, but not as good as the first three.

Now.. you said A series of unfortunate events. Awesome books, I've read all 13. The movie was excellent but I thought the ending was stupid! They made Count Olaf do everything that he did to the Baudelaires and you see him about to get eaten by leeches. He would've died! And faling off the building! The ending was a disgrace! Because it was about the first 3 books, and in book 3, I assure you, he does not get captured like that. It blatantly means theirs unfortunately not gonna be another movie after that ending.

Narnia was good. Book kinda bored me, but the movie was good (I prefered the old version though)

I think Pride and Prejudice is really good (I've only seen the most recent one)...maybe even better than the book.

I agree. Some parts of the book bugged me, and I thought the recent version was more romantic and had better character development than the book.

I am also one of those people who *gasp* likes the Lord of the Rings movies better then the books. Don't get me wrong, I recognize the incredible richness of culture, folklore, language, and general background information he created, but Tolkien... needed work on plot. I think the movies made up for that.

The first two Jerassac Park movies were slightly better then the books, also, although Lost World has almost nothing from the book. I used to be really into Micheal Crichten books, so I've seen lots of those adaptations. Most of those made pretty entertaining movies, except Timeline, which is too bad because it was my favorite book by him. Oh well. :p :)

Doctor Zhivago and Lawrence of Arabia were both really good movies, although I've never read the books so I can't really judge.

i thought the movie version of Narnia was okay-it was the BOOKS that really were boring, agree with you on that one:agree:. BUT,keep in mind that the books were meant for a MUCH younger group of readers than either HP or ASOUE.
(ASOUE was meant for a slightly more mature group of readers than
Narnia though, in my opinion)

The outsiders!!!!! (I! can! stop! using! exclamation! points! any! time! I! want!to!!!) Oh my gosh, that's one of the best books I have ever read! I liked the movie, too. Not as much as the book, but it was good. The story is wonderful, and the movie really captures it.

"The Princess Bride" is also fabulous, isn't it? For those who have read the book, it leaves some things out, but the movie is still beautiful, in my top ten movies of all time.

"Holes" was enjoyable as well. A theatre group in town did it as a play, and that adaptation is even better. My good friend, who played Stanley Yelnats, isn't tired of the story at all, either! That goes to show how good it is.

"Pride and Prejudice" was very well done, and easier to sit through then the book. The book is amazing, but the movie is more concise. I sometimes get dizzy reading Jane Austen's intricately constructed sentences.

Outsiders! Omgosh! Me and all my friends became like obsessed with it! I bought the special edition version of the movie, and I don't know if you've seen it, but the version of the movie that was released to theaters and stuff didnt have a lot of stuff, like pretty much the first chapter, and other stuff, but the special edition cersion has those deleted parts, and you dont have to watch them seperately!

And the 5th Potter movie was really good too, I thought.

Lord of the Rings - Love the films, found the books dull, really not my thing (please don't throw things at me!)
Trainspotting - Probably the best book to film adaptation I've seen. Left out lots of the book, but rightly so, just concentrating on the main story. I probably love the film slightly more than the book, but it is very close.
Out Of Sight
About A Boy

The following films I really like but haven't read the book:

Jackie Brown (adapted from the book Rum Punch)

I'm surprised no one has mentioned it but I thought Bridge to Terabithia was made into an excellent movie - I thought it was much better than the book in terms of the creation of the land of Terabithia. It was such an amazing movie.

I also loved Chocolat, Da Vinci Code and LOTR (to be honest...the LOTR books bored me...too much description!)

Also...i don't know if anyone has read or seen the movie: Circle of Friends by Maeve Binchy I love her books, but in the movie they changed the ending slightly, which for me made it so much better!!!

Well LoTR obviously, they did a wonderful job and didn't leave out as much as I expected.
First 3 HP films.
Now, Narnia, when I saw that in the movie theatre I was shocked. In a good way. It was Amazing. it was so true to the book and added so much more than the book. Much better than the book and I don't say that often.
I'm normaly dissapointed by movies though. I expect too much. Way too much.

LoTR was pretty good and Narnia wasn't bad. The first couple HPs were ok but they've been steadily growing worse. I loved the book Ella Enchented (my dog is named after that book, Ella Bella) and they completely destroyed it with the movie. Cheaper by the Dozen with Steve Martin was HORRIBLE!! I loved the book and the original movie. Eragon was really bad, I didn't even go see it! I could tell from the previews. I hope they dobn't do too too bad with The Golden Compass, because I love that book. I think there are very few books that were made into movies that were good.

I've never read the book, but I know that Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a good movie.

You should read the book, I thought the movie was ok but I think the book worked better for the story.

I do tend to have a bias towards movies that I read the book of after though, because then the movies aren't ruining my image of what the book was like, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas goes in that category, and so does Running With Scissors.

I think my favorite adaptations are A Clockwork Orange and Fight Club. I thought A Clockwork Orange really benefited from Kubrik's visual style in adding a different layer to it, even if he cut out the real ending. Plus the nadsat is so much easier to understand when you hear it being said as opposed to reading it.

I also thought Lolita did very very well (again, Stanley Kubrik) of capturing the overall mood of the book, and when you're dealing with a Vladimir Nabokov book the mood is important.

There's also Fight Club which is one of my favorite favorite movies, even though I can tell that David Fincher pictures the Chuck Palahniuk universe differently than I do and if I had read the book first I would not like it.

The Lord of the Rings was amazing too. Just amazing.

Lord of the Rings and The Hunt for the Red October are some of my favorite movies. They both have much better dramatic timing as movies then they do as books. I mean, Red October as a book is good, I guess, if you want accurate--and boring--descriptions of tactics and such, but the movie is much more entertaining. As for LotR, I'm sorry, but I'm just one of those people who prefers the movies. I know that makes me a horrible person.

Oooh, yeah. I forgot about Pride and Prejudice. That's also one of my favorite movies (the newer version, that is).

Well, I loved the first of the His Dark Materials trilogy - Northern Lights - loved all three books - but I'm really worried about the movie. (Apart from the fact that I don't understand why they've changed the title!) They say the movie is great - but have they dumbed down the central theme? If they have, then the whole point of the stories is missed, surely?

- As a lifelong Tolkien fan, I adore Peter Jackson's movie trilogy. I don't always agree with how he interpreted the characters, but he did what he needed to do to turn a book long regarded as totally impossible to film, into movie magic. He produced some utterly sublime, iconic moments on screen which did justice to the epic scale and majestic beauty of LotR.

- I was enchanted by Walden Media's The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe . Faithful to the spirit of the book, with very nice imaginative touches! The CGI could have been better in places but that's a minor quibble. :)

- I have hugely enjoyed the HP movies so far. :tu: I much prefer the efforts of Cuaron, Newell and Yates to the first two Columbus films which look faithful but totally miss the more subversive elements, the edginess, of Rowling's magical world. I enjoyed OotP so much I saw it six times.

Translating a book to screen is always difficult. I think these three examples are about the best I've ever seen. :)

Babe, by Dick King Smith

and Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk.

IMO, they are the two that hold up the best!

It's a rare occassion but The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and the Lord of the Rings films outshone the books in my opinion.

I liked how Lolita was adapted for the big screen. I thought it was very well done and conveyed the intense drive towards self-destruction of the main character and the mystery which lie in the heart of the book. Jeremy Iron's performance was perfect, just perfect, absolutely brilliant. I think this is my favourite book adaptation.

Pride and Prejudice. I haven't read the book in awhile, but let me tell you, I can actually stay awake during it.
Sense and Sensability was good too. I'm currently trying to read the book and it got boring somewhere near the middle.
LOTR. I honestly think that the movies are better than the books (*ducks flying projectiles from LOTR book fans*)
I've never read Fight Club, but the movie was awesome.
OH! and I can't forget my favorite movie of all time...About a Boy. The book and the movie are amazing in their own rights. This is probably the only book to movie adaptation that I don't hate the filmmakers for changing things around with.

I hated Series of Unfortunate Events when I saw it, I definately think they could have done a better job and kept closer to the books.
The only reason why I watch the Harry Potter movies anymore is because Dan Radcliffe is in them. I really don't think that the scriptwriters know the characters well enough to have written the script for the movie. I vote that fans should write the next script lol.

Lord of the Rings. It was one of the first films I actually enjoyed watching as much as I enjoyed reading the book. Peter Jackson was a great director, and did a great job on the trilogy.

Also, The Shawkshank Redemption. Such an emotional film, and captured greatly. It's one of my favourite films. :)

I've never read the book, but I know that Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is a good movie.

Read the book! ;) even though i love the movie, the book is much better.

Atonement is a wonderful film. I prefer the ending in the film to the one in the book, it had a much better effect....
Chocolat - i also prefer the ending in the film to the book
The Chronicles of Narnia
Pride & Prejudice
Sense & Sensibility
LOTR
Bridget Jones Diary - (just the first film)

I'm kind of amazed that no one has mentioned Gone With the Wind--a fantastic book turned into a fantastic movie that managed to be very faithful to the book's spirit and key elements--certainly not a word-for-word transition, but all the main plot points are there, and the spirit of the story and the characters is kept intact.

Rebecca, book by Daphne du Maurier and Film by Alfred Hitchcock, was also an excellent book-to-film translation. Yes, there were some major points changed, but again, the essence of the characters and the spirit of the story were expertly captured in the movie.

IMHO, the movie Jurassic Park is a lot better than the book. No offense to Michael Crichton fans, but he ended way too many chapters with lines like "Then, in the distance, someone screamed." which is just cheesy melodrama. The movie, on the other hand, was tightly plotted, excellently acted, and had effects to die for (I had T rex dreams for a week after seeing this movie--of course seeing it 4 times in one week probably had something to do with that, too...)

Love The Wizard of Oz movie, but never read the book--anyone who has, care to comment?

I'm going to agree with everyone who says that the LOTR and Narnia adaptations were very well done and nice presentations of the books.

Trainspotting - Probably the best book to film adaptation I've seen. Left out lots of the book, but rightly so, just concentrating on the main story. I probably love the film slightly more than the book, but it is very close.

Trainspotting had to be seriously re-tooled as the book was less a novel than a series of linked shorts.

At one stage they considered following the books structure and make it an Altmanesque film but wisely chose to tidy up the narrative and go with a linear tale.

I think these book-based movies were good movies that followed the book prety well:

-Charlie and the Choclate Factory (the new one. The Oompa- Loompa songs are almost exactly the same as in the book!)
-Narnia
-Peter Pan
-Little Women

I guess the Harry Potter movies and Eragon were OK, too.

And the Nancy Drew movie was good, too. It wasn'y based on a specific Nancy Drew story; it was based on all of them at the same time because they made up a new mystery.

Oh, yeah, the Anne of Green Gables miniseries is great, as is the sequel, Anne of Avonlea. This is the Kevin Sullivan production starring Megan Followes as Anne, and it was very well done. Megan portrayed Anne exactly as I see her when I read the books, and Jonathan Crombie and Schulyer Grant were a great Gilbert and Diana, respectively. I'll admit Colleen Dewhurst didn't fit visually with my Marilla, but the attitude and actions were spot-on, and Richard Farnsworth's Matthew broke my heart. Sadly, the third installment, "Anne of Green Gables: The Continuing Story" was horrible--completely destroyed the character of Anne, upset the timeline for the stories (how do we jump from the late 1800s to WW1 in just 5 short years?), and didn't have an ounce of the magic that the first two series had. Now, I don't insist that movies be a word-for-word translation from the book to the screen, certainly Anne of Avonlea took a lot of liberties with the Anne stories, but the characters and situations were all still very recognizable from the books to the films, even if they didn't follow the same plots. The third film, though, you would never have known it to be about the same people as the first two, it was so drastically different from who Anne and Gilbert really were.

Wizard of Oz is a fantastic movie. In fact I thought the book went on too long. This is one of those instances where I think the film was better.

The first two HP films weren't good but the last three were great as well as all three Lord of the Rings films. I loved the film Stardust even though it wasn't very faithful. They wrote a lot of funny jokes and the ending was happier.

I can't remember if The Princess Bride was a film or book first. I think the book came afterwards so does it count?

Dangerous Liaisons is a fantastic film. I think the performances and costumes added a lot to this story. John Malkovich in particular was a treat.

I really liked the Spiderwick Chronicles. They did a good job as opposed to The Seeker : The Dark is Rising which was one of the worst book to film jobs ever made.

Both the '95 BBC version and the '05 film version of Pride and Prejudice were really well done. I thought Emma Thompson did a good job with her Sense and Sensibilty film though Davies had a good script too the acting was a let down for last years tv miniseries.
I loved North & South. Cranford and Wives and Daughters based off Elizabeth Gaskell's novels. Especially as Gaskell died before she could complete W&D. The screenwriters went off her notes to write a satisfying ending.

I must disagree about the movie being better. The movie seemed to indicate that everything that went wrong could be blamed on Nedry. In the book everything had already unraveled right under their noses. Also, the movie's great visuals have nothing on the book's raptor nest.

Although the book didn't become a movie; they were written by Clark and Kubrick in parallel. (Granted, "The Sentinal", which was the germ of the story was published in 1950.)

I almost always prefer the book to the movie bc of all the changes they make, but one instance in which I prefer the movie is Howl's Moving Castle--the end is tied up rather shoddily but the main body of the plot I preferred over that in the book.

A Walk to Remember- much more impressive than its book counterpart. I don't like Nicholas Sparks' style.

I'd have to agree, I also believe the Notebook was MUCH more entertaining and emotional than the book, to be honest, I thought the book was somewhat dull.

When I first saw PoA in the theaters I was extremely dissapointed with the way events were moved all over the place(i.e. Firebolt as the ending). Lately though, I would have to say PoA has grown on me and it has become my favourite of the films. Emma Watson's eyebrow
movements annoyed me in GoF, though.:elaugh:

OMG, same here! When I came out of the cinema after seeing PoA, I was fuming. The new fat lady, the werewolf that looks like Gollum's half-brother, new Dumbledore with shortish grey beard, the usual bad acting...et cetera, et cetera. But now, I can stop and say "OK, it's not very true to the book but it is a good film (bar the acting) - it's funny, it makes sense". Even though the first two films were truer to the books, and in places I really like them, they aren't brilliant, and I think, as a film, PoA is better. GoF is just irritating (mostly Emma Watson's acting skills, or lack thereof) and new-Dumbledore's lack of half-moon specs. But the action scenes are good. I despise OotP - I think it is that film that, more than anything else, has made me appreciate PoA. It's just so rubbish by comparison. I think the only good bit, and I mean the only good bit is Helena Bonham-Carter's acting. She's a brilliant Bellatrix.:tu:

Ugh, took the words right out of my mouth, Helena was EXCELLENT, I cannot imagine a better Bellatrix. I also think Luna and Umbridge were also the only "good" thing about OotP. I remember prior to its release people were saying it would hopefully "top" the rest of the films, not so. It was a complete let down for me personally, ESPECIALLY that horrid Sirius death scene, NOT AT ALL how I imagined it. I have been trying to tell myself that if I watch the movie more and more I will love it more as I did for PoA, but I don't think that will happen. PoA was just fantastic as a standalone film, and I love that, it's something that I hope the rest of the films can accomplish. Even though I want HBP to be great, I still know that there is a possibility that it will not be, no matter how great the previews Warner Bros. dishes out to us look, I will not fall for that trap again(OoTP previews). Fingers crossed.

These come to mind straightaway:

-The Lord of the Rings trilogy (Naturally.)
-the Harry Potter films (Although none of them are great.)
-The Wizard of Oz
-Jurassic Park
-Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Burton/Dep)
-Big Fish (Burton again - a highly underrated movie. I've not read the book, but I understand it's not a narrative, but a series of stories that inspired the film.)
-The Princess Bride
-the Bourne movies
-Dr. No and Casino Royale are 2 James Bond movies that I actually believe superior to their novels. (And among the few to actually be based on the book, rather than using a few plot points and character names.)
