I have to say that it is 6th behind PoA. Time travel ruined the entire Harry Potter series, and DH had more potential.

OOTP has always been the most difficult of the series for me to read because I felt it went way to heavy on the angst. DH had a lot of angst as well, but I felt it was better balanced - and it had me on the edge of my seat wanting to know what happened next.

Rated it 1. I loved it, it was written in a fantastic way, and had very satisfying answers! I mean even some of the parts that I would have hated to see like: harry being a horcurx, I still loved the way she portrayed it! It made the theory look brilliant!

Deathly Hallows was excellent for me. Seriously flawed but still somehow excellent. I know it's because of the Ron/Hermione. It's what I really love and it was there in full in the book. The pace for most of the book was also really excellent.

I think it's really funny that everyone has Sorcerers Stone and Chamber of Secrets on the bottom of their lists. It's just because how boring the stories are. They don't develop that quickly in those. I liked DH second best, PoA will always be my favorite. DH was full of non stop action, but I still love PoA a little more. HPB and OotP are a little equal for me, so it's hard to rank them. I love the endings of both of them.

After only 1 readthrough of DH here's how it stands right now.

3. HBP - i liked the introduction to the horcruxes, and dumbledore pleading with snape
4. PoA - one word... Sirius
5. GoF - it was when the first of the good-guy deaths happened... still a pretty good book
6. CoS -I liked this book, but I liked the others more
7. PS - Ditto. Hey, this book got me started on the series! But, I like the other books better

I thought it was the best book of the series, the epilogue left a lot to be desired, but the plot twists, the explanations...The power-hungry side of Dumbledore. It was a lot more then what I had expected. Jo wrote a beatiful book, and I know for one, that I didn't expect so many different things to happen during the book. (I still don't get the connection to Lily's eyes, though...)

I think the significance of her eyes is that Snape loved her. So when he looks at Harry, no matter how much he sees him as being like James, he'll see Lily's eyes, and remember her and why he has to protect Harry.
And then there's just before Snape dies, when he says to Harry 'look at me' so the last thing he sees before he dies are Lily's eyes.

I did feel that DH dragged on in places, and skimmed over some things too much. I think that there's always that thing, that when you get to writing a final book, you may inadvertantly realise that you have alot to say and not too much time to say it in. I kind of got that impression with this book. It had on it's side that it was the final book, so we were inevitibly going to find most things being resolved, but that aside, I don't think I would rank it in my top three.

1. Deathly Hallows: A+ Nothing else needs to be said.

2. Goblet of Fire: I loved this because it was sort of like a mystery novel feel to it. Who is the person who put Harry's name into the Goblet? You could guess it once you put the pieces together but I never saw it coming. All the chapters after the Graveyard were awesome. A

3. Order of the Pheonix: Wow. Longest book. Totally hated Umbridge and Fudge. Loved the fact that Harry was rebellious and created his own student organization. My favorite parts were when F&G raised hell before leaving. The Dumbledore/Voldy fight and DoM was great. A-

4. Half Blood Prince: A very enjoyable book but it was more of a set up for the Deathly Hallows. Learning about Voldemorts past and the horcruxes was very interesting. B

5. Chamber of Secrets: I read this book first of any of them and found it drove me to read PoA & GoF (which my sister already had) within two weeks after. It was sort of scary considering I was pretty young when I read it. B

6. Prisoner of Azkaban: I liked this book a lot. And it was my favorite for a while. I liked parts of it. I loved the Shrieking Shack scenes and the ones where Harry finds out Sirius is good after all. B-

7. Sorcerors Stone: I actually never fully read this book. I saw the movie first and then read the second book which I loved and pushed me to keep reading the books in the series. I came back to read most of it. I'd say C+. It was a very solid book but compared to the rest its nothing.

Actually, numbers 3 and 4 are tied, as are 5 and 6. This is subject to change...I don't really hate GoF, I just don't like it as much as the others. :D

1. Deathly Hallows- I loved this because it was the last in the series and I thought it was really good. I know lots of people died, but I like how JKR made the deaths, like Dobby's. I also loved the Prince's Tale. And I liked how Harry killed Voldemort, though I wanted his soul to be destroyed.

2. Sorceror's Stone- It started the my favorite series/best series in the world.

3. Order of the Phoenix- she killed one of my favorite characters, but I loved how she tortured Umbridge and I liked Dumbledore's Army.

4. Half Blood Prince- JKR made Malfoy seem nice. I always liked Malfoy because he was malevolant, but Harry and Ginny finally got together.

5. Chamber of Secrets and Prisoner of Azkaban- Two of my favorite characters introduced, Ginny and Sirius.

6. Goblet of Fire- I hate books where there are levels and tasks and that sort of thing, Boring!!!

I am not sure yet if DH or OotP is my favorite. The others change a lot too.

For complexity of plot and a resolution to the story, I voted for DH. But in terms of quality of writing, I think perhaps SS/PS was the best. It was probably subjected to the most careful editing, both by the author and the publisher.

PoA, I always get this overwhelming feeling after I read it, I never want the feeling to end.
PS, It started the whole thing and is filled with so much intrigue.
GoF, Voldermort comes back and the story starts to take off.
DH, The end to a great series, not my favorite but it's still great.
OoTP, Lot's of things happen, the story gets even deeper.
HBP, Might not have had alot to do with snape, then end is near, Harry finds out what he must do.
CoS, Never really liked it, lacked the feelings the others did.

I'm a bit unsure about where I would put DH, but it would certainly be numbers 3 through 5. On the other hand, if you would consider DH to be the second part of a single book (and therefore take HBP and DH together,) I;d rank it at number 3. I think this actually may be a fair assessemnt, becuase the first five books really stand on their own better than the last two books. I really think HBP and DH need to be considered twoparts of the same story.

3. GoF - just... amazing. I know a lot of people think its one of the worst but I loved it!
4. OotP - Sirius and Harry's relationship development and Sirius' death
5. PoA - made me weep for the first time at an HP book "you should have died to protect your friend as we would have for you"
6. PS - first one... classic. Plus the whole sequence of protections to get trough.
7. CoS - great book at the end but I always have a lot of trouble getting into it.

[though the last 3 are pretty much interchangable, as I love all the books, but the top three are solid. My favorites before 6 and 7 went like this: 3, 2, 5, 4, 1, but its changed on re-read.]

DH is definitely my favorite in the series. I felt that it was a little muddled when the trio was on the run, pitching tents and not really knowing what to do, but it certainly picked up. All of the red herrings (Bathilda Bagshot for one) were frustrating, but the book really picked up and I was more than satisfied with the end result - although the epilogue was rather shmaltzy.

Previously my favorite Harry Potter book was Prisoner of Azkaban; the introduction of Lupin and Sirius, two of my favorite characters, along with the insight into the Mauraders and Snape was very interesting.

So if I were to come up with an order, it might look like this:

SS was really the opening to the series, and it has always been a fun read. After all, that's where the series started. But JKR's level of writing has really improved since then and now SS really seems like the most childish of the lot. It is all exposition, and we don't truly delve into the plot until CoS.

The middle 3 - 5 mind as well be interchangeable. It's really hard to make the list after my first two, mainly because it's basically like choosing the worst out of 7 very good novels, all of which are of course part of the same great story. HBP had an amazing second part of the book. I loved the introduction of the horcrux storyline, but all of the romance was really trite. I may not be a fan of Ginny/Harry, but it was much better written in the last book, DH. The Harry Potter books are not romance novels. It doesn't mean that I don't love the romantic elements, but in HBP JKR just focused on it too much for my liking.
