MrVengence July 28th, 2007, 4:39 am I'm not sure how many people know about this film, as (in the states) it's release was rather low-key. I did a search on this before i posted just to be sure.
Anyway, it's a non-Potter film that Rupert Grint did with Julie Waters, who ironically plays Mrs. Weasley.
It's a fantastic movie worth watching even if Ron is your least favorite Harry Potter character. One of those coming-of-age films, but you'll have a blast watching it.

Sub Zero July 28th, 2007, 5:04 am I had read about this, and I definitely wanted to see it. Is it being sold or shown anywhere here in the US? I really want to see it.
sunmoonstars July 28th, 2007, 6:43 am I know it's not in theaters, but I saw it advertised the other day at Blockbuster. They only had two copies and they were both out. If it's at Blockbuster it'll probably be at other stores too.
Blofeld July 28th, 2007, 6:53 am I've heard of it. Isn't it creepy, though, that the old lady who befriends him in this film plays his mother in the HP series? That's just...
MrVengence July 28th, 2007, 1:49 pm You can pick it up at Best Buy for $15. Worth the money imo.
Blofield, though it may sound a bit wierd, the chemistry they have onscreen is incredible. Kind of a reversal of roles actually.
Siobh July 28th, 2007, 4:17 pm ha i just watched it last night! i think its really good and rupert is actually a good actor...never really realised it before, he wasnt really used as much as he could have been in the last few hp's, but he really comes through in this film!
his shyness is so cute!
Aeris_Cymru July 28th, 2007, 8:01 pm Ahh I saw it when it was shown on TV here
It was absolutely brilliant, very very touching
flowerchild July 28th, 2007, 8:45 pm I saw Driving Lessons last year and angainst my expectations, thought it was really good. Definately worth a watch.
LeanneJO July 29th, 2007, 9:03 am It was a pretty good movie, not what I expected though. And you don't sit there and think 'oh thats Mrs Weasley' cos she is totally a different character in this.
Diamond_Sparkle July 29th, 2007, 10:22 am I haven't seen it. I want to, though. It looks funny =] Is it on DVD or what?? I remember it being released in the movies but maybe it wasn't out for long because when I looked at session times the movie wasn't even playing in the cinemas? Not sure???
sticky July 29th, 2007, 10:23 pm it is a very good movie, i have it on DVD. it is good and i love it. it is really funny in places. it was originally played on TV, it wasn't in the cinema here, but you can get it on DVD.
rupert is very good in it, he is a brill actor, not to mention cute in it! :D
Kharabakh July 29th, 2007, 10:39 pm Well, I saw it a couple of days ago, and I really liked it. I won't say it's Oscar material (then again, they can't afford the advertisement that goes with an Oscar nomination can they? ;)), but it is a very interesting movie.
Also, Rupert's line to character Sarah when he's about to leave the hospital is priceless...
Khar
RWeasleysgirl July 30th, 2007, 3:44 am That really was a wonderful film! I really enjoyed it. No, it wasn't, as Kharabakh said, Oscar material, but it was thoroughly entertaining!
TheCurio July 30th, 2007, 3:55 am I really wanted to see this movie. I was following it and following it, but it didn't come out by me. The same thing happened with Snowcakes.
Sub Zero July 30th, 2007, 3:59 am All I know is, when Emma's new movie comes out, I'll be first in line to see it. :D

What's Emma's new movie?
Sub Zero July 30th, 2007, 4:35 am What's Emma's new movie? It's a kid movie, but I have two small sisters so it makes for a good excuse to see it..
July 20, 2007 - Emma signs on for her first new role
Emma has been cast to voice the character of Princess Pea in the animated film The Tale of Despereaux. She’ll star alongside big names such as Robbie Coltrane, Dustin Hoffman, William H. Macey and Sigourney Weaver. The movie is set to be released at the end of next year. Here’s what her official website says:
Emma has been cast to voice the role of Princess Pea in the upcoming animated movie The Tale of Despereaux. She will be working alongside some of Hollywood’s biggest names including Sigourney Weaver, Dustin Hoffman, William H. Macey and reuniting with Harry Potter favourite Robbie Coltrane.
The The Tale of Despereaux is a tale of three unlikely heroes - a misfit mouse who prefers reading books to eating them and who is desperately in love with a princess (Emma), an unhappy rat who schemes to leave the darkness of the dungeon, and a bumbling servant girl with cauliflower ears - whose fates are intertwined with that of the castle’s princess.

It's really sweet you're going with your sisters, minus the false pretense for what I'm assuming is a crush on Emma.Oh yes, I have a major crush on Emma. I'm still young though, and our birthdays are only one day apart (she's born Apr15 and I'm Apr16) so it's not totally weird.
Honestly though, even if I don't go, my mom will make me take them anyway, haha.

That's cool with your birthdays. As long as it's an age-appropriate celebrity it's all right. I love how your mom takes you to rated-g movies.
Sub Zero July 30th, 2007, 6:14 am That's cool with your birthdays. As long as it's an age-appropriate celebrity it's all right. I love how your mom takes you to rated-g movies.Hahaha no no no, just like..me and my sisters. My mom comes sometimes, but honestly they want me to go with them everywhere. I took them to see Cars and Rattatouile. I don't mind though, none of my friends will be anywhere near a g rated movie so I can't be found, haha. Plus my baby sister is an animal, she's everywhere. So if I don't come she'll run around and wreck the theater.
TheCurio July 30th, 2007, 6:32 am Awww, that's cute that you help out. Hey, I went to see Ratatouille with a couple of my friends and we liked it so....
RWeasleysgirl July 30th, 2007, 3:38 pm Eh, unfortunately that seems a bit young for my siblings who are now entering the stage where they make a very convincing argument as to why they should be allowed to see the latest PG-13 movies every time we go to the theatre...
Maybe I'll take my cousin! lol
LoonyPuaLove July 31st, 2007, 2:11 am I still need to see that! I'd love to see Rupert Grint outside Harry Potter.
choco_frog July 31st, 2007, 8:43 pm so cute! This is an excellent movie...gets kinda twisted near the end,
but it's still a great watch! lots of hilarious moments...
Julie Walters is my hero
:tu::tu:
fantastyfreak August 1st, 2007, 2:27 am I have a huge crush on Emma Watson! She is just so hot! So is Tonks in OOTP. Man she was really hot! Sorry girls, you do the same too! Except you fawn over Daniel Radcliffe/Rupert Grint/Tom Felton
harryismyhero17 August 1st, 2007, 6:51 pm i saw it last week! it was really good. Rupurt and Julie's chemistry was great!
REMEMBERALL August 5th, 2007, 9:54 pm it was really good. Rupurt and Julie's chemistry was great!
I agree, I couldn't believe it was Julie.. I had to google the movie to find out who the actress was that sounded like "mrs Weasley" she was so thin in this movie! dd 17 is watching it now, I wish I had more time to watch it again before it has to go back.
PuFFindoR August 6th, 2007, 2:47 am I'm not sure how many people know about this film, as (in the states) it's release was rather low-key. I did a search on this before i posted just to be sure.

I rented this movie a month or so ago... I don't know... I found it to be boring. I turned it off after a while and never finished it. Hmm, maybe I'll have to give it another try..
dobbysocks August 6th, 2007, 3:14 am I've heard of it. Isn't it creepy, though, that the old lady who befriends him in this film plays his mother in the HP series? That's just...
I think creepy truly is the word...
ginnypotter19 August 6th, 2007, 5:30 am I have now seen the movie 28 times, and I adore it, but it does have a bit dryness to it too. I know that some England movies are very serious sp? but there should at least have been a hug between the two at the end, I'm sure they're used to it  Anyway, it came to a big shock to me when I found it. It had been out for a while, and last I heard it was staying in England, but I went to Walmart and my friend was jumping up and down that she had found it, hearing me talk about it for months. I had 60 dollars for my allowance and had all ready chosen what I wanted to buy, but I immediatly put my new clothes back to get it.
PuFFindoR August 6th, 2007, 3:24 pm 28 times?! Oh my goodness!!!!
Ok, I'm going to rent the movie again and give it one more shot. If someone can watch it 28 times, I can surely watch it once...
ginnypotter19 August 6th, 2007, 10:45 pm Well, I've also got really weird taste,
loonyluna0114 August 7th, 2007, 2:36 pm I think its weird, the acting is good, Grint better in this than in HP in my opinion, Walters as good as ever. Their relationship creeps me out abit though, I mean is it normal for two so very different people to have such a close bond, I mean its sweet and everything but ever so slightly creepy as well. I also got quite bored throughout as well
LoonyPuaLove August 8th, 2007, 1:45 am Wait, why does he hang out with Walters? isn't it a bit pedophileish?
ginnypotter19 August 8th, 2007, 5:25 am No, it isn't a relationship like that. The moral of the story is that Waltors loves the boy, and has brought him out of a complete wreck of a family that doesn't really love him until the end, though, the mother makes it look, and acts like she does. In reality, she just needs him around. Walters is kind of like the woman who wakes him up, but not as a lover, but great friends. He falls in love with a Scot though. . .
Marie0903 August 9th, 2007, 12:51 am I just watched this movie a few days ago. I didn't find it creepy that these two characters became friends. Ben (Grint) worked for Julie Walters and they became close. There wasn't anything sexual about it. They both were lonely and ambivalent about what they wanted out of life. Through their friendship they learned how to value their own lives.
I loved it!:tu:
I barely recognized " Mrs Weasley" they made her look so old!!
LoonyPuaLove August 9th, 2007, 4:04 am Oh, okay! Thanks for clearing that up. I was curious as to why Grint's character would hang out with someone so much older than him. It's kind of unheard of. I guess age isn't everything though.
ginnypotter19 August 9th, 2007, 7:02 am Actually, Walters is an older woman. In HP, that's not her hair color. . . Though, if you watch the movie, you do see in some shots when she has red hair then gray in the next.(it was done during HPGoF)
GrintSistah August 9th, 2007, 9:04 am I love Driving Lessons! I Own it. Rented it first and loved it from begining to end! The chemistry between the two was Perfect. I Love Rupert but he was much better in DL than in HP. I hope to see more of him in other movies after the HP movie series is over.
IMissPadfoot August 9th, 2007, 10:34 am I LOVE Driving Lessons! I bought the DVD a little while back because I felt bad that I hadn't seen it. I thought it was a bit odd at first because Rupert hardly says anything for a while, but when he gets going, he is brilliant. And I love Julie Walters too, the two work really well together. :)
LoonyPuaLove August 9th, 2007, 10:58 am I can't wait to rent it! Rupert definitely shows the most promise out of the trio. I mean, he's no Olivier, but he could grow to be a pretty good adult actor.
novaklovesyou August 13th, 2007, 1:25 am i love this movie!
i rented it at first, not sure if i was going to like it, and the next day i went to buy it.
Rupert definitely shows the most promise out of the trio. I mean, he's no Olivier, but he could grow to be a pretty good adult actor.
completely agree. he is the one i can see being an amazing adult actor.
ginnypotter19 August 13th, 2007, 6:16 am I can see them all doing it, as all but Emma are now leagally adults. . .
Anyway, I thought it was weird the first time too, but I absolutely loved it every time I watched it, and once I watched it with captions and most words were a lot different than I thought. I even thought that one of the songs was completely Scottish, but it was in English,.
dEAcsrOck430 August 13th, 2007, 8:35 pm That movie was great! I loved when Ben was dressed up as a tree...
ginnypotter19 August 13th, 2007, 9:24 pm I liked him when he was shirtless. . . Sorry, Jkz, I liked the movie cause of the good plot.
LoonyPuaLove August 14th, 2007, 1:53 pm A tree? That's really random.
Hyla_Granger August 14th, 2007, 2:51 pm I twas a really quirky movie... but very good. I've only watched it once when my parents rented it (upon my request)... I think I need to watch it again to really catch more of the humor. I spent so much trime the first time around trying to figure out what in the world was going on that I know i missed a lot. I really enjoyed it though and I think we will definitely buy it at some point.
TheCurio August 16th, 2007, 8:32 am I watched it on Sunday night. It was really good.
LoveWeasleys September 28th, 2007, 5:31 pm This movie was so great! I absolutely adored it!!!
The acting was superb and the storyline was serious with comedy in just the right places.
I loved these lines:
I love the line "Thank you for having me". I also loved
"I have come for my boy!" :rotfl: and "I am a poet, I understand the power of words."
The ending shot was beautiful. Evie was absolutely wonderful. When I first started watching it, I could have sworn I had seen her before but could not remember where. Then she yelled and I was like "It's Mrs. Weasley!"
I really like the way the film dealt with certain issues that were brought up and the companionship of Ben and Evie.
juliette October 8th, 2007, 1:15 am I saw it at the movie rental place and rented it about a month ago, really, really good. It was great to see Rupert and Julie in a different role. I had never seen her in anything except HP.
quiditchwitch October 10th, 2007, 10:36 pm That movie was great! I loved when Ben was dressed up as a tree...
Oh gosh, the first time I watched this movie, I was rolling on the ground when they were talking about him being a grand Eucalyptus tree. I died.
I loved this movie, I watched it by myself first, then suggested that some friends watch it with me, and I'll tell you it was a good idea to watch it first, because over their "Oh My God! He's so CUTE!"s I could barely hear anything.
Quirky and lovely, I watch this movie when I get bored of doing my math. :p
skellingtonfan October 22nd, 2007, 3:04 am This movie was so good! i rented it because my sister has a Rupert Grint thing going on and we loved it. I love the part when he's reading those plays with her.
houseelf25 October 22nd, 2007, 3:44 am I rented it a few weeks ago, and I thought it was really slow at first, but then they went up to Edinburgh (I have no idea if that's spelled right...) and it got tons better :D. And I agree with ginnypotter19 about the shirtless thing :D The tree was hilarious, I was like "I can't believe that's actually happening"
Wimsey January 11th, 2008, 3:30 am I just saw this film, albeit on TV rather than in the theater. It was a fun little whacky English romp. Grint seems to have a talent for playing characters with psychotic mothers! Grint impressed me: he's actually got a very good vocal range, well shown when he is "acting." His performance over all was good: the director clearly knew what he wanted, and he got it from Grint.
Laura Linney (perhaps best known for her role in "Love Actually") does a good job as Ben's hyper-christian, hyper-protective, hyper-hypocritical mother. Julie Walters plays Dame Evie quite a bit over-the-top: but I think that was quite intentional, as she is played as a classic of English Thespian.
The story is basically about a young man having to carve out his own identity and role: i.e., the classic coming-of-age story. Like so many small English films, it seems to portray the English as a bunch of hypercivilized lunatics. For example, it is very much in the flavor of "Keeping Mum," or something like that.
This was a good project for Grint. It let him play a fairly different character, and it was a role that by its very nature demanded some range. It was never going to be a commercial hit - indeed, it never had wide release as they probably guessed that only Harry Potter fans would be interested in seeing it! - but these small projects are helpful in an acting career.
freelantzer January 12th, 2008, 2:07 am I loved this movie and thought Rupert Grint did a fantastic job. He has really come a long way from CoS! He drives me crazy in that movie, but in Driving Lessons he was very impressive. And Julie Walters is always phenominal. A great coming-of-age film.
SodaSpill January 12th, 2008, 4:59 am I LOVED this movie. I rented it from Blockbuster and really really want to own it.
It was so quirky and sweet and endearing. Rupert's role was so awkward and teen-angst that I just couldn't help but smile. He is definately my favorite out of the trio, and has a great performance. Julie Walters is also fantastic.
LoonyMagic January 13th, 2008, 7:40 pm It's been a while since I've seen it, but I absolutely loved it! I was so happy to see Rupert in another role and I think he really excelled himself and has proven himself to be a great actor. The storyline was really interesting and I think it was a lovely coming of age film :) Of course, it goes without saying that Julie Walters and Laura Linney, especially, were very well cast for these roles and are both great actresses :)
I loved it when Ben dressed up as a tree! :D Aaaw, poor Ben :)
bitsy40 January 14th, 2008, 2:39 am I rented this a while ago and I really liked it. It was a good mix of serious and fun. I didn't even recognize "Mrs. Weasly". Rupert played the role well. He is one of my favorites in the HP movies so it made me curious to watch him in something else. I was happy I found it at the rental store (they only had one copy).
PureBloodGirl March 30th, 2008, 11:02 pm I watched the trailer and thought it looked good. I might see it.
LoveWeasleys March 31st, 2008, 12:07 am You should! It is great! I thought it was just hilarious and the acting is surperb. It was really hard for me to find though here in the states :(.
ginnypotter19 April 1st, 2008, 2:51 am I found it here at Wall Mart, though it had been months after it had come out. I was there and I saw my best friend, she had just gotten a new phone, and she was showing it off to me, and I was showing her how I was responsibly spending my money on a cute outfit, when she said, 'hey, isn't that the movie you wanted to see with Rupert Grint?' I look over and there it is! I put everything back and bought the movie,.
FoxyShay24 May 11th, 2008, 9:35 pm I was at Blockbuster and picked up the movie to see. I had heard about it, but I didn't think I was going to find it here in the States. I liked it alot. A lot more then I thought I was going to. I kept watching and thinking about Ron Weasley!!! LOL Rupert did remind me alot about Ron. I guess I'm too use to seeing him as Ron. But I thought it as a great story, I just might buy it. They lady that plays Molly Weasley, can't think of her name right now, but wow.....great acting. I recomend it. :tu:
Desraelda May 12th, 2008, 2:23 am I got my copy from Amazon and I'm glad I bought it. Julie Walters was wonderful, but I think Laura Linney was outstanding.
What was interesting about Rupert's performance as Ben is that he reminded me of Dustin Hoffman playing Ben in The Graduate. Both tuned out the noise (people) around them. An older woman (Julie Walters) saved Ben (Rupert) in Driving Lessons, but the older woman in The Graduate nearly destroyed that Ben.
I liked what Rupert did with Ben, but then I thought from when I first saw him in SS that he had potential.
Fury May 31st, 2008, 5:51 pm I just saw this on Starz Comedy yesterday, and oh my goodness did I love it! It was awesome!
The cursing and swearing was actually the best part of the movie, I have to say!
Rupert and Julie connected so well in this movie. They were absolutely great together!
After watching this movie, I can definitely say that Julie can definitely pull off Mrs. Weasley's famous DH line!
rich_505 May 31st, 2008, 6:24 pm This is a truly brilliant film, I much preferred Rupert in this than in the HP Films. Julie was, as ever, 'magical'. Classic British humour, 5 stars! I'd like to see Dan & Emma doing the same kind of thing, break the mould a little; Emma more than Dan.
I have this on DVD on my bookcase it's the kind of film that you should definitely watch when you're feeling down.
Guardian Angel May 31st, 2008, 7:30 pm Oh, this film is really good! Saw it some time ago and Rupert was incredibly good in it! He really proved himself as a wonderful young actor (besides being an object of fangirling ;)). I must see it again soon because I really think it's well worth seeing it more than once. Lovely movie!
shleb July 2nd, 2008, 3:38 am I live in the States and I received a DVD of the film for my birthday (from two non-Potter fans who fuel my obsession despite their own nonchalance)
We watched it while on a trip to the beach and loved it. It was so good! I love the scene where Ben is forced to act out all those scenes with Evie!
We still try to watch the movie when we get together. I'm so glad I got it!
cgold July 25th, 2008, 2:50 pm I adored this movie. I'm a major Rupert fan and I totally saw Ben Marshall while watching that movie which was great. Everyone that I know that's watched it really liked it although they didn't expect to and Rupert's performance got great reviews (http://www.rupert-grint.us/reviews/dl/index.html) from the critics. I hope everyone eventually watches this movie which plays a lot on Starz and Starz Comedy right now.

Finally, a Wimsey post I agree with in it's entirety. :D Anyway, Rupert also has a new project coming out in 2009. It's called Cherry Bomb. (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1248971/) I hope he'll be even more impressive in this film which I think calls for even more range than Harry Potter and he will continue to build his acting credentials while still being a part of Harry Potter.
Cheers :tu:
Mad_Druid August 13th, 2008, 9:02 am I saw this quite a few months ago but the quality of the DVD wasn't very good and I couldn't really get into it.
I borrowed it from the library the other day and enjoyed it very much. It was good to see Rupert in a role other than Ron Weasley and I always enjoy Julie Walters.
cgold that's a great site you linked to in your last post :D
Lily_L_Potter August 18th, 2008, 8:11 pm I saw it not to long ago. It was really good! Some of Rupert's lines were just hilarious!
vampiricduck November 17th, 2008, 8:56 pm I just got to see this. It was just amazing! I had never thought it would have such depth to it! I love to hate Laura Linney the whole way throughout, she's cruel and condescending, and Julie Walters is, as per usual, totally wonderful!! Grint, I was really impressed with. For such a small movie, he really played a wonderful role in it and his development was really well played out! I love love love the ending!! :)
nic104 November 18th, 2008, 11:23 pm I really loved this film. It's one of my personal favorites. It was refreshing to hear Rupert Grint curse.
freelantzer November 19th, 2008, 2:11 am :welcome: nic104!
I really liked this movie, too. I was pleasantly surprised by Grint's performance. His acting bothers me so much in CoS, but he was fantastic in this. :tu:
NumberEight November 19th, 2008, 4:44 am I saw this film again a few months ago on a cable movie channel and they censored Grint's F-word. I guess it was because Walters had already said it. God I hate the retarded U.S censor laws.
vampiricduck November 28th, 2008, 12:30 am I dunno, that wouldn't bother me too much. It seems more important that Grint honestly did an honourable job with a teenage character facing somewhat different difficulties to the stereotypes most often seen in teen movies. It was awesome that he brought across the integrity of such a guy. :)
hp_book_reader January 1st, 2009, 8:31 pm i loved Driving Lessons; Rupert was awesome in it! it really showed that Rupert can do other movies and that he really is a great actor. I am so looking forward to seeing Cherry Bomb just to see more from him.
