Teddy Lupin and the parallel to Harry

What so you think of this.
Ted+s parents were killed by Voldemort (maybe not directly, but sureley because of him), as were Harry's.
Ted only has a godfather that fought Voldemort and had a slose connenction with his parents, as Harry had Sirius who was very close to Lily and James.
Ted is (as I could point out from the Deathly Hallows) a metamorphmagus and that was an extraordinary thing, as Harry has a scar which was also something different from what other people had.
These things make me wonder.... what do you think??

Im sad that no one is interested in this theme. It is obvious that J. K. Rowling wanted to make someone that was similar to harry and i cant believe no one would want to discuss this.. :(

I think she definately tried to make someone similiar, and i definately felt that when Lupin and Tonks showed up on the night of the battle that atleast one of them would die. All of this especially after Harry was made his godfather. There is definately a relationship between the two except that Ted was able to grow up in the wizarding world. This knowledge is already an edge on Harry, and i bet Ted will be just as successful.

Teddy was very similar to both Harry and Neville, but he served as a foil to them. His parents were killed when he was a baby, but unlike Harry and Neville, who had to fight for love, security, self - worth and acceptance; Teddy always had it. I mean the description of him in the epilogue indicated that he was everything his parents would have wished: secure, loved, confident. His presence really indicated that the world was now a happier place and free from the darkness suffered by the previous generation.

Yeah, it was definitely a parallel. She even said it was in her Today Show interview.

Unlike Harry, his godfather didn't spent 13 years in Azkaban or out of his life and he actually has a grandmother.

Actually Teddy is more of a foil to Harry than anything else. Teddy is raised by a loving grandmother with an involved godfather and multiple close family friends. Teddy is very much the anti-Harry/Neville (since I doubt that Augusta was a very nurturing woman).

But the thing that hes anti Harry/Neville also means that he resembles them. Only in some different way.
I decided to put this thread because I was very glad to see that there could be another Harry and I cried at this point of the book, because I remembered what was like when I first read the Philospohers Stone and thought what would the ending be.
And I cried because I would like to read a stroy about Ted Lupin and his school mates, and that was not possible. I only hope I will get to some really good fan fic.

It is true that his situation did parallel Harry and Neville, but he really seemed to be a completely different person to them. In fact it sounded like he was very much in the mould of the marauders (without the arrogance and bullying of James and Sirius). It is funny because there was such a short description of him in the epilogue and it sounded like he was a complete mixture of both parents and was everything, they would have wished for him.

Well Teddy wasn’t really that similar to Harry. Sure they have things in common both were orphaned at a young age. But Teddy unlikely Harry who grew up in a neglectfully home not knowing that he was a wizard, nor anything about his parents other then the story the Dursleys made up. While Teddy being raised by his grandmother as well as having Harry, and other Order members in his life. Who’d answer any question he had about Lupin and Tonks. Teddy had love and always knew it. You could also threw Neville in this comparison since he too was raised by his grandmother, but she was always for the longest time making comparisons between Neville and his dad, so Neville probably felt at times he wasn’t good enough grandson or son. .

Some parallels yes but when you look at it Teddy had a far better life then Neville, or Harry had. Well as good as your life can be having lost your parents at such a young age.

I perfectly agree. And I think this is a part of the message Rowling wanted to send to us. That without You-Know-Who world is a better place for those who had the same fate as Harry and Neville, to be separated from their parents at such young age.

As soon as Harry was named Ted Lupin's godfather, I knew that Lupin and Tonks were going to die just like Harry's parents died. It is the same type of story again without Voldemort and all the Horcuxes. My only question is: Is Harry going to die in a battle just like Sirius died?

I thought it was terrible that his parents died, and I really think it was not 100% necessary, I mean, not everything has to have a parallel.
Hey, at least he has a hot girlfriend though!

Hi. It's sad that Ted lost his parents like Harry did. But he wasn't attacked by Voldemort like Harry was when he was one years old and lives in the world without Voldemort.

I don't think so. I think Jo made it pretty clear that the world is a much happier place now. THe point of the parallels isn't for history to repeat itself, it's to show how much things had changed.
Harry Potter - orphaned shortly after birth, brought up by neglectful and uncaring relatives, didn't see his godfather for 13 years, deprived of love.
Teddy Lupin - orphaned shortly after birth, brought up by a loving grandmother and with a lot of access to his godfather and extended family, clearly loved and respected.
I think Harry himself would have recognised the parallels and ensured that Teddy Lupin had the kind of childhood he would have wished for himself.

No! Definitely no. Because Sirius was meant to die. He proved Harry he was good, and that he always loved him and when he did that he was at peace. And he didnt cared about his life anymore, he just wanted to protect Harry. And you know what happened to all who protected Harry. His parents, Dumbledore, Sirius... and Severus... all dead...

Is there someone who can say something more about this topic. Im all into discussion about this. :)

There is a power of three in that statement. Teddy was extremely similar to both Harry and Neville in this situation, growing up with no parents because of the same man. However, I think that Harry and Teddy are a lot more similar, and will share a bond over what happened early in their lives forever. I believe that JKR wrote the storyline of Teddy into the books to show a parallel in Harry's life to someone else for a change. No one in the series thus far knows what its like to lose both parents besides Neville, but to now have the responsibility to watch over someone who went through the same stuff that you did is very hard to do. JKR brought Harry's story full circle; giving him parental figures/new parents (Remus and Tonks) and then disposing of them in a quick and heartbreaking way.

Despite all the literary references and plot devices, it gave Harry a way to pay back to some of those who helped him when he had no one to turn to.

No one knew better than Harry that a child without love could become the next Voldemort rather than a good person like Neville or himself. From 11 on, Harry received love and support when he needed it most. And he knew that this helped him to make the right choices. He made sure that Teddy and his own kids would never want for love.

Teddy Lupin is a parallel to Harry for sure ...and also to Neville because he ends up being raised by his grandma too right?
I think Tonks was really selfish....she knew she could be killed if she joined the Battle...she went there anyway to see if Lupin was allright...and made her own son an orphan!

It's been said already, but as soon as Harry was made Godfather, I too got the feeling that Lupin and Tonks probably weren't going to make it through the book. Teddy is definitely a parallel to Harry, and Neville, and in a less direct way, the boy Tom Riddle too. With all these orphans in the series, I think it's nice to have one who's still able to grow up in a pretty stable and loving environment.

As I was thinking about this, I thought noone else would've came up with this "theory", but I guess all ideas are at least thought by more than one person :D

Anyways, the fact that Harry is the godfather definitely makes this parallel even better because Harry understands how it feels to not have a father figure in his life and how much a godfather means to an orphan. Similarly, I think Harry would be the best Godfather ever to Teddy simply because of the fact that Harry has already walked that path and he knows how it is.

Anyways, I think it's great that JK added this parallel in. :D

It is funny you mention it. I too knew ahead of time. But I knew in chapter one...I think it was like page 3 of the whole book when Voldy marked Remus and Tonks for death. Then Tonks is singled out by Bella during 7 Potters and a DE tailed Remus for 3 days prior to him arriving at #12G. I was thankful that JKR introduced his furry little problem there because I knew she'd let him live to solve it cuz it meant more book time - and that was when we found out about Teddy. Once Harry was made Godfather, I knew any page we would read of their deaths.

When Remus came back to the reunion scene and explained to Harry that they all sacrificed their lives for him but it was worth it because they wanted to make the world a happier place - he did it in terms of Teddy which was an ironic part to the parallel because Sirius, Harry's godfather was there as well. It was like a total tie up of all of the Marauders and the two orphan sons they had left - now eternally interwined. The fathers including Sirius as godfather did the sacrificing and Harry, a mini marauder, was left to help guide the other mini marauder through the happy wizard world they had left behind for both of them.

Maybe that made no sense as I wrote it, but it made sense in my head while reading, lol.

Anyway, the point was the legacy remained intertwined through all the godfather business and I thought that was pretty cool. And as someone pointed out - Harry was the perfect person to do this as he knew how important his job would be and he certainly had the willingness and the mentality to do it (as we heard at #12G).

There are definately links, but Teddy is going to grow up in a world where he is much loved, and he will be free to be his own person. He wont have the weight of the world on his shoulders and his destiny is his own to make up.
