dark jazz <3
8m57w6 August 14th, 2007, 5:03 pm Echo and the Bunnymen. Not that they're around any more, but even when they were, they weren't well known.
Halo001 August 14th, 2007, 5:06 pm Jazz-Weather Report, Return To Forever Metal- Dream Theater, Sonata Arctica, Rhapsody of Fire.
YellowRose August 14th, 2007, 5:13 pm Echo and the Bunnymen. Not that they're around any more, but even when they were, they weren't well known. Are you kidding? They are part of music history!
8m57w6 August 14th, 2007, 5:16 pm Really!? I wasn't aware. It's just I've never met anyone else who's ever even heard of them except my mom and uncle.

omg are you kidding me?????? who DOESN'T know those bands?????? the almost, self against city, the academy is, and matchbook romance are some of my favorite bands!!!!
but um... theres a lot of bands that like only me and my brother seem to know around here where im from... lets see theres...
- butthole surfers
- Clutch
- Corrosion of Conformity
- Darwin's Waiting Room
- Helmet
- Pillar
- Psychostick
- Sepultura
- Silverchair
- Spineshank
- Suidical Tendencies
- The Toadies
and sooooooo many more... but those are just the ones that come to mind...
those are a mix of like heavy metal and like 90s grunge type stuff... i have a very WIDE range in music tastes lol
lancerdancer August 14th, 2007, 6:04 pm i know some people know about the bands i mentioned but definitely not a lot of people. i forgot to mention paramore too but they're probably gonna get bigger now since i saw them on mtv all night last night everytime the shows went to a commercial.
and you and your brother aren't the only ones who know of some of those bands, i used to listen to suicidal tendencies, butthole surfers, and silverchair (a actually had a little crush on the singer)
kala_way August 14th, 2007, 6:31 pm "well known" is pretty relative I guess as long as your not U2 or Frank Sinatra, but according to how many hits come up on google here's a few that I love that aren't very popular.
eastmountainsouth - kind of folksy with great harmony, I think they only have 1 CD out
Todd Smith - I think he's categorized as Christian. Writes some amazing songs, but really needs to change his name  if he wants to be well known
Ruthie Henshaw - played Fantine on Broadway in Les Mis, and has done a bit here and there. Absolutely amazing voice, I wish she'd do more. (along with people like Linda Eder and Anthony Warlow, those Broadway people just aren't appreciated )
Decyfer Down - Rock, what can I say, I really like them.
Then just quite a few random Indie Rock and "Baroque Pop" type people like the Decemberists and Rufus Wainwright, but I guess they're pretty well known now. Though not nearly as popular as they should be IMO :D
nice idea for a thread
xoxambiexox August 14th, 2007, 6:35 pm lol yeah... most of the people that i know are into rap... or counrty... i like country too... but my roots are in rock music...
have you heard that new silvershair song? its called like "straight lines" or something
its soooo weird and soooo not like the Tomorrow, Isreal's Son, and Pure Massacre that i come to know and loooooove so much
oh and another "band" that i really like that not to many people know is Corey Smith... hes acoustic... i looooove him... he has really good lyrics... usually telling a story... "In Love With A Memory" "Twenty One" "First Dance" and "if i could do it again" are some of the better ones that i can think of right now....
ravclawprefec August 14th, 2007, 6:47 pm omg are you kidding me?????? who DOESN'T know those bands?????? the almost, self against city, the academy is, and matchbook romance are some of my favorite bands!!!!

I think Suicidal Tendencies and Sepultura both enjoyed a hayday when I was in high school (I guess I just dated myself).
Anyway, Butthole Surfers...I can't even think of them without thinking about their soundbite on CB4 (It's not appropriate to post here, of course). To this day, it can make me laugh.
Rajaton August 14th, 2007, 6:47 pm one word Rajaton, there a group from finland who sing contempory vocal jazz, in finnish, english, latin. Similar to the real group, m pact and take six. rajaton is the best of them all. rajaton.net is the site, great great group, currently on a world tour to celebrate a 10 year jubilee.

I've definitely heard of Silverchair even though I don't know any of their songs.
Some of my faves are:
*Megaherz (German Metal)
*Fuel (Rock, slightly more known)
*Fort Minor (Lead Rapper from Linkin Park's solo attempt. It actually came out pretty good.)
*Richard Cheese (Popular songs turned into lounge music [Frank Sinatra style music], he does covers of songs by metal artists like Disturbed, Nirvana, and a few rappers as well. He's actually the person who does that famous dogs barking Jinglebells song that they often play on the radio around Christmas.)
*Jon and Al Kaplan (Parody Musicals, like: "SILENCE! The Muscial!" [Silence of the Lambs spoof musical])
*Mudvayne (They actually do a song on the SAW 2 soundtrack. The song that plays when the credits start to roll, it's called "Forget to Remember")
*Audioslave (VERY good band, even though you've probably heard of them. They're not that commonly known however).
*Seether (Another one you might have heard of, same popularity level as Audioslave however, probably a little less.)
WilliamLovegood August 15th, 2007, 12:13 am Hmm.. Silversun Pickups, Linda Martini (portuguese band, really good.), Cold War Kids, and Zero 7 (lots of people know it, but i think is just to great to be left aside.)
shoopdawhoop August 15th, 2007, 2:31 am Wintersun-melodic black metal band from Finland
sllagnire August 15th, 2007, 2:39 am Zox and "Stephan Couture and the Campfire Orchestra". Both local bands, but very good in my opinion.
Drazer August 15th, 2007, 3:26 am What does well know exactly mean? Deserve more success? aren't in the top 40 charts? Only play gigs on the toilet circuit? Not featured in the bigger music magazines, like the NME, or Rolling Stone? Known in certain countries, but not so much in others? It can mean different things to different people. Personally alot of the bands mentioned here, i'd say were quite well known.
Anyway here's my little list:
Neutral Milk Hotel: For a band in my eyes that made the best record of the 90's, they should of been much bigger than they were. In the UK they are hardly known. Then again they were hardly going to get a look in, in the sea of rubbish that was 'Brit Rock'. http://www.last.fm/music/Neutral+Milk+Hotel/_/In+the+Aeroplane+Over+the+Sea

katishere August 15th, 2007, 3:50 am Okay so here go a few of mine:
Falling Up
RedGiants
Building 429
Molly Jenson
Kutless
Day of Fire
Some of them are sort of well known and some of the I can guarantee only a very small percent of the population have ever heard of.
RiddleTheKarma August 15th, 2007, 4:17 am i would like to consider Belle & Sebastian as well as TV on the Radio are relatively unknown, pretty popular in the indie music scene that i am familar with, but underground nonetheless.
Hysteria August 15th, 2007, 5:55 am - Silverchair
As if, they're huge!
Some others people mentioned like The Almost, Bring Me The Horizon, Audioslave are all pretty well known I'd say. Audioslave have been around for ages, and most Underoath fans would know The Almost.
One band I like thta most people havent heard of are Deathstars. They're goth/industrail metal from Sweden. I've only found 2 other people in Australia who have heard of them
RaspberryJam August 15th, 2007, 6:12 am Try the Commercialized Music thread. It's basically the same thing, and it's been around for a while.
kylecisnum1 August 15th, 2007, 6:43 am a few of mine are anberlin, the almost, the spill canvas, self against city, valencia, the audition, the academy is, matchbook romance, room eleven, and there's more that i just can't think of right now.
I love Anberlin! also like Emery and FM Static as well. Red Jumpsuit Apparatus is really good too!
Hysteria August 15th, 2007, 7:42 am I love Anberlin! also like Emery and FM Static as well. Red Jumpsuit Apparatus is really good too!
Yeah I love Anberlin too. They're great. I thought they were fairly well known.
IMissPadfoot August 15th, 2007, 10:54 am I really like Lifehouse! I don't know if they are huge elsewhere, but in the UK, I don't know anyone else who has ever heard of them!
Kharabakh August 15th, 2007, 11:06 am - Kila
- Tannas
- Regina Spektor
(at least here in Portugal they're not very well known)
Khar
PurpleHairAuror August 15th, 2007, 4:16 pm MxPx, Merge Left, Against All Authority and Bad Religion are some of my punk and pop-punk bands.
Daphne Loves Derby is a really good sort of alternative leaning towards emo group.
And Get Set Go is indie-powerpop with really twisted perverted lyrics. They're amazing but don't listen to them unless you throw away all sense of PC
lancerdancer August 15th, 2007, 4:50 pm Yeah I love Anberlin too. They're great. I thought they were fairly well known.
hmmm, well they're not very well known around here, the only people who i know that know about them are me and a few of my friends
oh and the high court, i found their myspace page randomly and really liked the songs they have on there
Schlubalybub August 15th, 2007, 7:34 pm Dragonforce. I luff them
choco_frog August 15th, 2007, 11:01 pm MOTHER MOTHER
Jets Overhead
The Look
Dark Room
Two Hours Traffic
(these are the best of the best of the unknown in my opinion)
xoxambiexox August 16th, 2007, 12:23 am *Mudvayne (They actually do a song on the SAW 2 soundtrack. The song that plays when the credits start to roll, it's called "Forget to Remember")
*Audioslave (VERY good band, even though you've probably heard of them. They're not that commonly known however).
*Seether (Another one you might have heard of, same popularity level as Audioslave however, probably a little less.)
Mudvayne is one of my fav bands!!! i saw them in concert w/ Korn and 10 years... AMAZING!!!!!! they also sing the song from the movie Ghost Ship... its called "Not Falling and is a really great song... their original stuff like "Dig" is my fav though lol
audioslave is pretty well known... i think that "like a stone" and "i am the highway" did it for them... i personally am not a big fan because i think its a terrible mesh... cornell can sing better then that and morello is a WAY better guitar player then that... but i heard Rage is back together so YAY!!!
and as far as seether goes... i think that their a bit more popular then audioslave... that song that he did w/ that evenesence chick helped them... but gasoline will always be my fav of theirs.
Hmm.. Silversun Pickups, Linda Martini (portuguese band, really good.), Cold War Kids, and Zero 7 (lots of people know it, but i think is just to great to be left aside.)
I love Anberlin! also like Emery and FM Static as well. Red Jumpsuit Apparatus is really good too!
I really like Lifehouse! I don't know if they are huge elsewhere, but in the UK, I don't know anyone else who has ever heard of them!
lifehouse is great!!! i love their song "Sick Cycle Carousel"!!!!
MxPx, Merge Left, Against All Authority and Bad Religion are some of my punk and pop-punk bands.
uh... <3 !!!!! basically... lol
Dragonforce. I luff them
yeah uh wow... i didnt know that anyone else knew them... talk about wicked guitar playing!!!! almost as good as Alexi from Children of Bodem...
but uh yeah... a few other bands that i like that i think arent too well known are Cradle of Filth, Fear Factory, Lockjaw, Swingin' Utters, The Lawrence Arms, and Lagwagon to name just a few more off the ole iPod
IntricateLogic August 16th, 2007, 2:25 am I really like Lifehouse! I don't know if they are huge elsewhere, but in the UK, I don't know anyone else who has ever heard of them!
Lifehouse isn't exactly small (I'm in America) but I absolutely love them!
Another band I really really love but can hardly ever find anyone who knows them is Matchbox Twenty .The only people who I know who know them are my mom and sister (both big fans) and I've made all my friends listen to some of their stuff.
katishere August 16th, 2007, 2:34 am About Lifehouse, I agree that they're pretty big here in America. They use their stuff on TV shows and commercials and everything-- I love them! My favorites of theirs are 'You and Me' (probably they're first big hit and yah I'm lame but it's so sweet!) and Hanging by a Moment.
Okay this isn't a unknown band, in fact it's quite the opposite, but I think this is a pretty unknown song by them. It's 'Time of Your Life' by Greenday-- I hate Greenday by the way, so judge the song by the fact that they sing it. I couldn't believe it was by them because it's so meaningful which is really not something you find to often in bands like Greenday. Has anyone heard of it? I don't think it ever got popular probably because of the fact that there's no stupid lyrics or screaming in it and that it actually has a point.
IntricateLogic August 16th, 2007, 2:58 am yeah, i like 'you and me' 'hanging by a moment' and i like 'first time'. they're all on my iPod.
katishere August 16th, 2007, 3:00 am They used the song 'You and Me' on a Smallville episode, the one where they had the Highschool Prom I think. I was like 'Ahhh! It's Lifehouse!'. I made a Harry/Ginny video to that song because it's so pretty.
turnstyles August 16th, 2007, 4:53 am I don't know how well known he following bands are, but I like them anyway:

Dillinger Four
Good Riddance
Heavens
No Use For a Name
Strike Anywhere
The Falcon
The Pogues
The Real McKenzies
The Sainte Catherines

Tiger Army
kylecisnum1 August 16th, 2007, 6:21 am Radiance Effect is a local band in the Ozarks that is quickly getting more recognition. they are the biggest band in Springfield, MO which has like 20 different colleges so that's sayin something

And of course some local bands hehe ^^
Buddha's Chocolate Company
Elysium
Lamaze
nicolerork August 16th, 2007, 1:31 pm Anberlin (http://www.myspace.com/anberlin), but they just got signed to a major label so they'll be well known in no time. No band deserves it more than them!
VAIRON (http://www.vaironmusic.com), they're signed to Nettwerk Records but haven't been getting a huge push for sales for their EP, "Indigo Skylines"
Search the City (http://www.myspace.com/searchthecity), they sound a lot like Anberlin. These guys will be huge. They just signed to Tooth & Nail (Anberlin's previous label)
Mew, Explosions in the Sky
no_seatbelt August 16th, 2007, 1:45 pm ah Explosions in the Sky and 65daysofstatic! I like listening to them when I'm studying or need to sleep because there is no words really.

i used to really like matchbox 20 in the late 90s, i still remember when their song "push" and "3am" came out and i fell in love with it. are they still working as a band? i know rob thomas was doing his solo thing and everything.
Okay this isn't a unknown band, in fact it's quite the opposite, but I think this is a pretty unknown song by them. AHHHHHHHH!!! Tiger Army!!!!!! man i havent heard anything by them in YEARS!!!! yeah they are more def an unknown band... same thing w/ No Use For a Name and The Unseen... but Bad Religion is a pretty well known band... at least i thnk that they are...
Knux7 August 16th, 2007, 6:51 pm Flogging Molly.
They're a little more well-known now, having appeared on MTV like during St. Patrick's Day, but they're still pretty underground here.
Irish punk ftw! Saw them last week in concert for the 3rd time, and they will NEVER cease to rock!
lancerdancer August 16th, 2007, 6:56 pm Flogging Molly.
we used to have the 2004 vans warped tour cd on the jukebox at Hollister when i worked there and it had To Youth (My Sweet Roisin Dubh) and i would pick it to play pretty much whenever i worked cuz it was fun and would make me smile

Ooh that song is one of my top favs. That and What's Left of the Flalg. That Warped was when I first saw them.. I've yet to meet them though :err: I do plan to though. My sis has a knack of meeting famous people (Deftones, Haste the Day, etc.)
JealousOfGinny August 16th, 2007, 7:47 pm i listen to Hop Along Queen Ansleis, Rooney(which is gaining popularity), Manic Street Preachers, and GoodBooks. anyone heard of any of them?
CheGueWeasley August 16th, 2007, 8:28 pm ah Explosions in the Sky and 65daysofstatic! I like listening to them when I'm studying or need to sleep because there is no words really.
Hehe, yeah, it's hard to concentrate when you have to listen to lyrics ^^
Do you know Mogwai? They're also kind of like that, a lot of instrumental stuff

oh man! i love irish punk! i really like dropkick murphys... they are AMAZING! and yeah i am jealous that you ahev seen FM in concert 3 times now... bah!
but i was just thinking... has anyone here ever heard of Streetlight Manifesto?? they are a Ska band... and well just play drool worthy...
WilliamLovegood August 16th, 2007, 9:37 pm Anyone knows CSS or Cansei de Ser Sexy?? Such a great band! And I've been listenning to Blonde Redhead lately and it's really good.
Tonkscat724 August 16th, 2007, 11:21 pm I've heard of some of the bands posted here. Anyone heard of Within Temptation? They're a gothic band. I think my friend said they're Sweedish? Also there's Lacuna Coil, an Italian gothic band. But I think they're a little more popular now because I saw one of their videos on MTV.com.
Jakarta_Mallard August 16th, 2007, 11:23 pm I don't know if they've been mentioned, but Opeth aren't particularly widespread unless you delve into death metal (0_0) but at the same time they're so accessible! Honestly, as long as you can brave 10+ minute songs, they're practically magic in a bag. They can easily be cited as one of the most unique (verging on being artistic lol) bands today.
Other bands who I think it is an injustice that they're not well known to their genres would be Nevermore, possibly Mastodon (they are pretty well known...) and Apocalyptica: cellos ftwun :p
Kharabakh August 16th, 2007, 11:27 pm Ah... Yes, Flogging Molly are excellent... I really enjoy "What's left of the flag", live version.
Black 47 are actually quite good too, although somewhat different.
"Funky Céilí (Bridie's Song)" is an excellent choice, as is "New York Town".

You have excellant taste in music. I completely forgot about Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys, which is amazing since I also love Irish punk.
Streetlight Manifesto are another good band I forgot. Ska music in general is a lot of fun. I got to see Big D and the Kids Table at the Warped Tour a few weeks ago, and they had probably one of the best performances of the day. They need to have more bands like that. They're starting to move away from their punk roots and now have more mainstream pop-rock bands, which is disappointing.
bmhsgirl191 August 17th, 2007, 12:29 am I love the band Blaqk Audio. The Kooks are also pretty good. THen some older stuff. But i love Transit Message and the NON
sllagnire August 17th, 2007, 1:47 am You have excellant taste in music. I completely forgot about Flogging Molly and Dropkick Murphys, which is amazing since I also love Irish punk.
I have to say that I have never listened to them, but my best friend just recorded with Dropkick Murphys and is going to be on their next album. I think that is pretty amazing. He is being credited for it by name too. So awesome.
MimiMascara August 17th, 2007, 4:04 am Okay this isn't a unknown band, in fact it's quite the opposite, but I think this is a pretty unknown song by them. Are you kidding me? You think that song is unknown?! Quite the opposite! I've heard that song countless times on the radio and a million other places. I don't listen to Green Day much any more (I used to love them), but I'm going to defend them for a bit. Now it's not really my place to judge your critique of music (God only knows I bite the heads off of anyone who does that to me), but I don't think you quite get the point. Well, the point is that Green Day lyrics (besides 'American Idiot,' but I don't really count that) have no point. At all. They're not supposed to. And that's why I like them.
Okay, generally the bands I like aren't incredibly well known, but still vaguely popular.
-Ben Kweller (actually not many have heard of him, but a few of my friends have)
-Regina Spektor (okay, if you haven't heard of her by now, you're living under a rock)
-Snow Patrol
-Oasis
-Norah Jones (not that a lot of people don't know her, but a lot don't like her)
-Wizard Rock (only my closest buds know this)
Knux7 August 17th, 2007, 7:35 am You have excellant taste in music.
Absolutely amazing. Flogging Molly, Streetlight, and Big D are my three top-listed bands. Last week I was at Warped and saw FM and Big D, but was unable to mosh much due to the heat. The index was registered at 110 F outside of the pits. :grumble:
Another few I can name off (I stretch across many genres) are Five Iron Frenzy (broke up :upset:) and Say Anything.
no_seatbelt August 17th, 2007, 2:03 pm Hehe, yeah, it's hard to concentrate when you have to listen to lyrics ^^
Do you know Mogwai? They're also kind of like that, a lot of instrumental stuff
Yeah I know of Mogwai being from Scotland, I like them. They are part of the Reindeer Section too, some really great songs from that super group.
Ressurected August 17th, 2007, 2:05 pm A lot of people that I've spoken to haven't heard of these bands:
Hatesphere
Amon Amarth
Dimmu Borgir
Adema
Hysteria August 17th, 2007, 3:12 pm Flogging Molly are hilarious. I saw them supporting Story of the Year in 2006 and whilst I cant call myself a fan they sure were very entertaining.
I've heard of some of the bands posted here. Anyone heard of Within Temptation? They're a gothic band. I think my friend said they're Sweedish? Also there's Lacuna Coil, an Italian gothic band. But I think they're a little more popular now because I saw one of their videos on MTV.com.
I love Lacuna Coil! They're great. THey're not very well known here in Australia I dont think.
lancerdancer August 17th, 2007, 4:18 pm Another few I can name off (I stretch across many genres) are Five Iron Frenzy (broke up :upset:) and Say Anything.
wow, i used to love five iron frenzy back in my christian ska phase. i went to the skamania concert back in 98 on halloween and they dressed up as the supertones and the supertones dressed up as devo. and now i have the "these are not my pants" songs stuck in my head.
oh and say anthing's also good
turnstyles August 17th, 2007, 5:46 pm I have to say that I have never listened to them, but my best friend just recorded with Dropkick Murphys and is going to be on their next album. I think that is pretty amazing. He is being credited for it by name too. So awesome.
Right now I'm very jealous of your friend. I wish I could record with any of my favorite artists, but unfortunately I don't actually play any of those instuments (or sing). I just play clarinet.
Absolutely amazing. Flogging Molly, Streetlight, and Big D are my three top-listed bands. Last week I was at Warped and saw FM and Big D, but was unable to mosh much due to the heat. The index was registered at 110 F outside of the pits. :grumble:

It was hot at our Warped Tour too, but not that hot. Luckily, it's always held right next to the lake, so we get a nice, cool, slightly fishy breeze. You just can't feel it while you're in the pits.
I'm also jealous of you because Flogging Molly didn't come to Milwaukee (or Chicago), so I didn't get to see them.
Hermionerules87 August 17th, 2007, 6:46 pm SCRIM.

A new band thats just been signed in the UK, watch this theyr ace!

Oh right.. I forgot Indianapolis was their first show this year. We had 0 wind, but tons of guys standing around throwing ice and stuff. There was also a giant blow-up slippin' slide! :p I was still too hot to be able to get close and really enjoy FM though.. I was already blacking out and all that.
Ah, also, I forgot about Goldfinger. They broke up a little while back as well, but they're known for redoing Nena's 99 Red Balloons in English with their own lyrics. Nena herself liked it and sang their lyrics, too.
99 Red Balloons was my favorite song for a while, until I got into the Irish Punk thing (best genre ever)
LunaTone August 18th, 2007, 1:20 am Tiger Army
YES. I adore Tiger Army and actually got to see them at Warped Tour this year. It was brilliant.
I love the band Blaqk Audio.
And this was the other one I was going to mention. I can't stop playing Semiotic Love. It's such a great song to dance to.
Necro August 18th, 2007, 10:02 am Angra, Evergrey, Circus Maximus, Limbonic Art, Cynic, Spiral Architect, Theocracy, Rudra, Aryadeva, GraveDigger, Rage, Running Wild, StormWarrior, Steel Seal, Communic, Outworld, Vision Divine, Adagio, etc...
Jakarta_Mallard August 18th, 2007, 1:41 pm ^ Hey, there we go, Opeth  I knew there'd be some somewhere. I'd estimate all those tracks would come up to nearly 2 hours; I used to listen to them a lot when I'd play a certain MMORPG that I've pledged I'll never play again...
I recognise Communic from your list, who I've listened to a bit. They sound great but I don't really enjoy them as much as I do Opeth.
Necro August 18th, 2007, 1:51 pm Opeth kick ***. But they are pretty mainstream in the underground, if you know what I mean. Most people know them.
Communic is amazing as well, but a style that is so reminiscent of Nevermore (More Progressive, perhaps) that you may get bored of them after a bit.
Dred August 18th, 2007, 3:56 pm I listen to a lot of metal bands who are not very known here, like Mägo de Oz, Elvenking, In Extremo, Edguy, Avantasia etc.
An also a lot of quebeker bands, Polémil Bazar, Mes Aïeux, Pierre Lapointe, Ariane Moffatt, Maharajah, etc.
I love music that sounds different. I'm listening Flogging Molly right now, thank you for that. ^^

My sister is into the Mad Caddies if you want to check them out. They're one of the most unique bands I've ever heard. They have songs that sound like circus songs, and pirate songs, and all kinds of stuff.
lancerdancer August 21st, 2007, 8:39 pm I love the band Blaqk Audio.
my roommate just played me their cd on the way to disneyland this weekend. it was different and not my type of music, but i really enjoyed it. it's weird to think that it's from the guys of afi. davey's voice goes from high to low and sounds different in a bunch of the songs. most of the songs even seem like different genres. but theyr'e really good, i definitely suggest them.

Blaqk Audio is amazing. AFI is my favorite band ever (I'm in the DF and all that), yet nothing like anything else I listen to, whereas BA is. So naturally, I adore it.
Davey tries to imitate the deep male vocals that are usually in dark electronic music, but his voice gets high by the chorus anyway. It makes me giggle, and I love it.
Anyway, here are a few (a FEW?!) bands I listen to, and I've met some people who don't know of them:
VNV Nation
Assemblage 23
Imperative Reaction
Apoptygma Berzerk
Covenant
The Birthday Massacre
Dope Stars Inc.
And One
The Cruxshadows
Emilie Autumn
Infected Mushroom
Ladytron
Freezepop
Combichrist
Wumpscut
Celldweller
Voltaire
Rammstein
Refused
Mindless Self Indulgence
Neuroticfish
Panzer AG
BlutEngel
A lot of that's electronic-y, I know.
I also really enjoy the 80's Goth music, like Siouxsie and the Banshees and Sisters of Mercy, which a lot of people don't listen to.
JoJ and scarling. are two of my favorite bands, ever...
I have almost nine days of music on my computer, so I could go on a while. And most of my music's slightly obscure. I like AFI, Madonna, Depeche Mode, Marilyn Manson, NIN, The Cure...those are the only ones I can think of at the moment that get played on the radio or MTV.
Eek.

And VNV Nation is quite good.

I used to listen to them all the time! I even saw them once in an All That Music and More tour. Haven't listened to them in awhile though.
Beckwith August 22nd, 2007, 10:55 pm I dunno how 'well known" some of these are, but:
- The Postal Service
- Rooney
- Nekrogoblikon
- What The (insert swear word starting with 's' here)?!
skedaddle August 22nd, 2007, 11:02 pm Rooney. They're kinda well known and I was SUPPOSED to see them last week but unfortunately things didn't work out :(.
Beckwith August 22nd, 2007, 11:07 pm Rooney. They're kinda well known and I was SUPPOSED to see them last week but unfortunately things didn't work out :(.
I prefer their first album myself...
magic_tree56 August 23rd, 2007, 6:07 am i tend to go for music thats on the fringes some people know them but couldn't really name you a song; like josh pyke (in aus and i think UK i think he's doing ok), end of fashion, kisschasy (actually they're latest is getting alot of airplay which is weird), paolo nutini, cat empire (love love love) umm oh there was eskimo joe but they went and got themselves famous this year I've been in love with them for 7 years and no one ever knew what i was on about and now eveyone loves them (well in aus anyway though their currently touring the US so you may of heard of them if not check them out their great)!
the ppl that mentioned silverchair i'm guessing arn't from australia coz their like the biggest band ever here, they can do no wrong (i personally stopped liking them about 2 albums ago).

I love Blaqk Audio. Its not like anything else I like but I really love what Davey and Jade have done.

Those bands are all very well known in Australia (frankly Im sick to death of hearing Kisschasey on the radio) but I doubt tehy'll break through over seas...

Couldnt agree more, though I stopped liking them a couple of years ago. Bring back 16 year old Daniel Johns and his surfy hair :D
osuginny August 23rd, 2007, 6:39 pm I guess it depends on what you consider well known. Most of my favorite bands are well known among people who like that type of music, but they aren't really played on the radio or anything... like Saves the Day, Allister, and Mest (the last 2 are unfortunately broken up).
I also love Paramore, who until recently weren't very well known, but are suddenly on MTV constantly for some reason.
lancerdancer August 23rd, 2007, 8:48 pm I also love Paramore, who until recently weren't very well known, but are suddenly on MTV constantly for some reason.
i love them too, and i know what you mean. they were the artist of the week on mtv last week and it was pretty annoying to hear the same little parts of three songs after every show and before they went to commercials.
Schlubalybub August 24th, 2007, 6:26 pm yeah uh wow... i didnt know that anyone else knew them... talk about wicked guitar playing!!!! almost as good as Alexi from Children of Bodem...
I've seen them in concert and where I was had like an open bit at the side of the stage where we were standing, and my friend played Herman Li's guitar, and he gave another of my friends a bottle of Carlsberg. Also My boyfriend took the keyboardists sweat towel, and we shook hands with them all, except the drummer cos he was stuck on his drums, and the bassist, because he was a bit miserable, but he did nod and smile at him
I think their combined hair length would stretch for miles lol
God Bless Dragonforce :)
LoonyMagic August 24th, 2007, 6:36 pm I also love Paramore, who until recently weren't very well known, but are suddenly on MTV constantly for some reason.
I know! It was really strange. I've liked Paramore for quite a while now and some of my friends didn't know who they were, but now for some reason MTV and ther music channels have grabbed hold of them and they'll probably get as popular as My Chemical Romance. There's nothing wrong with that, as long as it doesn't affect their music, as it has done with so many other mainstream bands.
Jakarta_Mallard August 25th, 2007, 3:37 am Opeth kick ***. But they are pretty mainstream in the underground, if you know what I mean. Most people know them.
Yes, but the fact that they are so well known for their varying aspects (progressive, death metal, composition-like writing, downright virtuosity...) across a wider spectrum is what I think makes them truly great as a band.
That being said, around in the English general public I must of only seen a couple of Opeth shirts on the whole (one being in Asda on the HP&DH release ), so there is definitely the underground aspect of their popularity.
VenomBDP August 30th, 2007, 3:27 am Well, my favorite band EVER is Iron Maiden, and most people have at least heard OF them... my other favorites that are better known are Shadows Fall, Killswitch Engage, and Lamb of God.
Some that I love that aren't as well known yet...
A Fine Frenzy - holy poop... the voice on this girl is just haunting. I've been listening to their album "One Cell In The Sea" for weeks on end now.
Black Label Society - Ozzy's guitarist (Zakk Wylde) in his own band... they sound quite a bit like Ozzy, but come on... when has that ever been a BAD thing?
Chimaira - Brutal, brutal metal... angry lyrics, awesome riffs, I totally love every one of their albums.
Jakalope - A Canadian techno band... imagine NIN with a female singer and slightly more upbeat.
The Sword - If you like classic rock bands like Black Sabbath and Dio, The Sword are like a modern day version of them.
Voivod - Jason Newstead loved them so much that when he left Metallica, he went and joined them. They're hard to describe... kind of a mix of metal, punk, and skate-rock. The vocals can take a bit to get into, but once you do, they're amazing.
AccioHarry2128 August 30th, 2007, 3:35 am explosions in the sky, oasis, and arctic monkeys!
Chris90 August 30th, 2007, 3:41 am Flipper, Butthole Surfers, Big Black, the Pixies (fairly well-known, but obscure), Meat Puppets (one song made it on the charts I think), the Vaselines, Whirlwind Heat, and the Wipers
Hysteria August 30th, 2007, 5:30 am oasis
Are you kidding? Oasis have been around for yonks and are known over at least 2 generations sharing different music taste. I think you'd have a hard time finding many people who hadnt heard of them
SmellyGopher August 30th, 2007, 5:46 am Arctic Monkeys
Edgewater
They Might be Giants
Nightwish
Our Tragic Hero
These bands are pretty much unknown in the area where I live. Still rock though.

Wow that is a bit sad! Haha

You are right, I think the only Australian bands I know of are AC/DC and INXS, oh and the band that sung 'Don't Dream it's Over' just a fabulous song.. They are all very good though :tu:
lanalynne August 31st, 2007, 11:42 am Not well known being relative, I would say some lesser known artists.bands I like are:
Dr. Draw
Jean Leloup
Mes Aieux
Alexie Murdoch
Serena Ryder
Some of these artists are really well known in Quebec, but since I don't live there no one knows who they are!
8m57w6 September 1st, 2007, 11:06 pm A new band I just found via my mom, (which is where I discovered basically every band I now love) is Shriekback. I'm fairly sure no one's heard of them, or at least hasn't mentioned them yet, but they're awesome!
mac_attack September 2nd, 2007, 10:09 pm I bet nobody here has heard of one of my favorite bands:
Colors.
:p They broke up a while back...and I used to have one of their cd's, but I lost it. :upset: I'm going to have to buy it again. Actually, I don't know anyone my age who is really familiar with them...mostly people older than me, I guess. But I drove to Wyoming last week with a guy I knew, but had never talked to, and he had one of their cd's in his car, so we bonded over Colors!!
Hahaha. My favorite songs by them are Ashes and One & Nothing. :D
Calliope_Cyprus September 2nd, 2007, 10:18 pm I LOOOOOVE CAKE!! They rock. And I also love They Might be Giants, who do sort of the same style of music, but they're relatively well known, I suppose... maybe... sort of... I think... :hmm:

elliot smith, page france, band of horses, the arcade fire(slightly more popular after their last album), flogging molly, dispatch, sufjan stevens, streetlight manifesto, rilo kiley, beirut, modest mouse, neutral milk hotel...probably more too.

I love neutral milk hotel and elliott smith! They are two of my favourite artists. Also, The Wedding Present, Slint, Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Ride, Catherine Wheel, I would go on, but I don't imagine many people on this site are particularly into shoegaze...

aliauthor September 3rd, 2007, 4:36 pm Ruthie Henshaw - played Fantine on Broadway in Les Mis, and has done a bit here and there. Absolutely amazing voice, I wish she'd do more. (along with people like Linda Eder and Anthony Warlow, those Broadway people just aren't appreciated )
Ruthie Henshaw is my hero  Her voice is so beautiful and perfect for Fantine....whoops, off topic, I gotta go find a Les Mis thread after this.
Anywho, I love alternative music. Here is some of my favortie artists!
-Some of the early Death Cab for Cutie stuff (No I don't watch the OC, I found DCFC on my own. ha!)
-Sara Barielles (I'm botching the spelling of her name. gah. Ah well. She had the free single of the week on iTunes in the US a few months back and I love her!)
-A Fine Frenzy I don't know much about them, but 'Almost Lover' is my favorite song right now. Soft and melodic.
-Blue October is well known, but I like a lot of their lesser known stuff :tu:
-Oasis isn't popular in the US, except perhaps "Wonderwall", and Beatles fans are gonna hate me for this, but I love them!
-SweetLou a friend of mine, Rocky, intorduced me to them and I am forever indebted! :p
-The Shins came to town a week or so ago, and I missed them! I'll never forgive myself. You all may know them, but no one in my town does. sigh.
That's all I can think of right now!
I've heard of Flogging Molly...never listened to them at all, but I know quite a few people who have shirts and stuff...
They are really popular here!
IntricateLogic September 7th, 2007, 11:27 pm Yeah, Blue October is good. Into the Ocean is my ringtone. i have a bunch of their stiff on my iPod.
aliauthor September 8th, 2007, 1:38 am Yeah, Blue October is good. Into the Ocean is my ringtone. i have a bunch of their stiff on my iPod.
Get 'Calling You' by Blue October if you don't have it already. It's the best song ever (okay, okay, to me)!
I used to love Into the Ocean, but the radio stations in town thought they could be hip and play alternative music and it's unescapable! :grumble:
Hanover_Fist September 9th, 2007, 1:27 am I don't know how well known the Dropkick Murphys are outside of Boston, but I'm really into them right now.
LilyDreamsOn September 9th, 2007, 1:54 am I'm a music addict, so I tend to search for new music almost every day... I'm not a huge fan of all of these bands, but they're all worth a listen:
God Is An Astronaut (I lied, this band is in my top 5 faves)
Delays
Real Lunch
Erratic Erotica
Annuals
Band of Horses
Duke Special
Earlimart
Uzi and Ari
Flat 12
Les Cowboys Fringants (I know they're big in Quebec, but I dunno about the rest of the world)
Stephen Fretwell
Sun Kil Moon
The Autumns (my friend likes to call them "the best band that no one knows")
Liam Frost and the Slowdown Family
My Architects
Schooner
Scars on 45 (used to be called Tendertraps)
The Radio Dept.
The Spinto Band (I think their song "Oh Mandy" got pretty big)
I'm not sure how big those bands are around the world, but judging by what I've seen on their last.fm pages, and the fact that I have a very hard time finding someone who knows any of them, I believe they're quite unknown. But as someone pointed out in this thead, it's hard to know what is unknown outside your country. For example, Kent are quite unknown here in Canada (I've only met one person who knows them) but I read somewhere that they're really big in Sweden, where they're from.
Ah, finding new bands is the only reason I like Myspace. =)
AptPupil September 9th, 2007, 5:37 am Well, there's a group of baby birds that started a harmony group on my windowsill. Do they count?
harryismyhero17 September 10th, 2007, 12:37 am ^
i like:
Stone Sour (i don't know if they are well known or not, but none of my friends have heard of them; though, they're awesome!)
The Pink Spiders
Disturbed
The Charlatans
Aqualung
The Rocket Summer
Spill Canvas
Trapt
We Are Scientists
i think im forgetting some...ill post them when i remember. :)
quiditchwitch September 10th, 2007, 2:16 am I dunno, some of the bands I like are really well known in Canada, but elsewhere they're not that well known.
but here's a couple:
Ima Robot
Karate High School
Billy Talent
Credible Witness (local talent, rather melodramatic though)
New Pornographers
Be Your Own PET
Beck (yeah I know its Beck, but you'd be amazed how oblivious some of my generation is to him!)
Bedouin Soundclash
Hot Hot Heat
Jarvis Cocker (think "Do the Hipogriff")
Metric
Er thats about it - correct me if any of these are well known; to you at least!
LilyDreamsOn September 10th, 2007, 2:25 am I dunno, some of the bands I like are really well known in Canada, but elsewhere they're not that well known.
Have you heard of Stars, Feist, and Final Fantasy? They're three other Canadian artists that are pretty big here but not so big in the rest of the world, from what I can tell.
Funny little tidbit: the song "Your Ex-Lover Is Dead" by Stars makes Daniel Radcliffe cry (at least, that's what my friend says). I've now come to know it as the "Harry Potter cries" song. It's amazingly beautiful, though.
IntricateLogic September 10th, 2007, 2:42 am Get 'Calling You' by Blue October if you don't have it already. It's the best song ever (okay, okay, to me)!

I just bought Calling You, it's on my iPod.
Hey, did you realize that the chorus of Calling You (i'm assuming you know it ) is in Hate Me? Yeah, its just before it's like his mommy leaving a voicemail.
juliette September 10th, 2007, 2:48 am what are some of your favorite bands/singers that aren't very popular or well known?
a few of mine are anberlin, .
I like them too! I currently have one of their cd's on repeat, I can't remember which one.
Ummm, one of my faves is Skillet, and then I really like Phil Wickham, he's new. Rush of Fools is a new band that's pretty good.
A lot of my faves are alternative/rock christian bands, so unless you're into that kind of music, then you don't really know about them. Most everything else I listen to is mainstream rock/top 40 or mainstream country.
harryismyhero17 September 10th, 2007, 3:01 am Billy Talent

Billy Talent is quite a big and popular group. er, at least where i live...which is canada. :p

Hey, did you realize that the chorus of Calling You (i'm assuming you know it ) is in Hate Me? Yeah, its just before it's like his mommy leaving a voicemail.
I feel out of it..never seen it! Now I have to because I freaking love that song! hee hee.
But my latest obsession is The Shins... I freakin' love them!
The Shins came this summer, but I couldn't go since I was on Vacation. It rained during the concert, but all my friends had a fantastic time!
LoveWeasleys October 5th, 2007, 2:42 pm I really like the band named "East Mountain South" They are a folk band and I have not really found many people that like them.
Spirit October 6th, 2007, 5:25 am I love Switchfoot -- they are my favorite band. They aren't exactly unheard of, but I run into a lot of people who have never heard of them, or have only briefly heard of them but have never heard any of their songs.

Beatifically October 9th, 2007, 3:48 am Barcelona.
Barely anyone knows them, unfortunately. The vocalist has an amazing voice. I suggest you give them a shot. You can listen to their songs here (http://www.myspace.com/wearebarcelona). Their songs are amazing . . . but it's a bit annoying trying to look for their lyrics since no one seems to know them! Anyway, I'm a big fan of the song "It's About Time" and "First Floor People." The latter is pretty slow, but the chorus is breathtaking. Do I need to say anymore?
Moriath October 19th, 2007, 9:15 pm Deep Blue Something
Hardly anyone knows them. It is only if I sing the refrain of Breakfast at Tiffany's that anyone recalls the band and I haven't met anyone who knows more songs by them.
mac_attack October 22nd, 2007, 6:08 am Two Shots for Poe and The AM Project are good. :)
marauderfan October 23rd, 2007, 6:44 am But my latest obsession is The Shins... I freakin' love them!oooh! I LOVE The Shins! They came to my city this summer, a block away from where I was working, but I was at work that day and I couldn't sneak out to go hear them! :( My favourite song by them is Australia

ringbearer44 November 13th, 2007, 10:16 am There's a really great local band in SLC, Ut. They call themselves The Green Peanuts, and they play some of the freshest ska out there. They recently got their new album on iTunes, and they also have a myspace page. So check them out.
Fury November 13th, 2007, 5:14 pm Fozzy - the band whose lead singer is Chris Jericho (of professional wrestling fame)

*gasp* I love ETF! They were supposed to play here for Taste of Chaos, but they had legal issues with getting into the country (possibly a criminal record? Haha), so I missed out :( I love Situations and Not Good Enough for Truth In Cliche.
Straylight Run
Existentialism on Prom Night = <3
I really love this band called Mayday Parade, and only two people I know know about them. And that's because I found out about MP through them. So when a girl at work mentioned them the other day I literally gasped
Others include:
After the Fall
Gyroscope
Mary Jane Kelly (local band)
The Audition
Hit the Lights
Avalon Drive
The Kooks
Story of the Year

I love Enter Shikari!! :D  My favourite song is probably When A Jealous Man Finds A Gun and Sorry You're Not A Winner :) From you're list I also like All Time Low, Killswitch Engage (I've only heard a few songs but they were awesome!) and Rise Against :D
Taterpeel January 23rd, 2008, 10:02 pm Dream Theater, Opeth, Ayreon, Symphony X, Orphaned Land, etc..

I especially love Silverstein and Anberlin. Awesome bands and both incredible live
*gasp* I love ETF! They were supposed to play here for Taste of Chaos, but they had legal issues with getting into the country (possibly a criminal record? Haha), so I missed out I love Situations and Not Good Enough for Truth In Cliche.
I was disappointed about that (for some reason they couldnt get their visas worked out ) but then they were replaced by Drop Dead, Gorgeous who IMO are even better.
Aiden
Scary Kids Scaring Kids
I love Scary Kids (seeing them live on March 1 :D) they're pretty different. As for Aiden I'm not a huge fan but they are a very good live band (saw them at Aust. Taste of Chaos).. really know how to get the kids into it.
One of my favourite bands I've found isn't very popular at not with people I know, Mindless Self Indulgence. THey're not for everyone but I reckon they're pretty cool.
Also a couple of years a go I knew some people who liked Alkaline Trio but now most people I come across havent heard of them :wow:
Oh and Set Your Goals. AWESOME band. Great performers, great songs, lovely guys.
AmeliaPotter January 24th, 2008, 10:57 am I especially love Silverstein and Anberlin. Awesome bands and both incredible live  I like a couple of Silverstein ones... but especially Smile in Your Sleep.
I was disappointed about that (for some reason they couldnt get their visas worked out ) but then they were replaced by Drop Dead, Gorgeous who IMO are even better. Yeah, there was a legal issue. The only reason I could think of was that one of the members may have a criminal record and hence the government wouldn't let them in. Hmm, I think I may have missed Drop Dead, Gorgeous' set anyway... either way I don't remember seeing them.
Ooh, that reminds me of another one I like... Gallows. They were awesome at ToC. Their lead singer was a bit of an arrogant berk, but I was so glad that he didn't suck up to the audience and say this was the best place they'd ever played. It really annoys me because you know they say that at every show.
Sorry You're Not A Winner Love that song. But as it's the only one of their I know, I can't really classify myself a fan.
Cobra Starship <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 I saw them with The Academy Is... in Sydney, and they were freaking awesome... unfortunately I didn't know their songs then but I would have gone even more crazy with the moshing if I had... I love their new album too.
Rise Against I  The Refugee. Such an awesome song. I was really happy when they played it at ToC!
As for Aiden I'm not a huge fan but they are a very good live band (saw them at Aust. Taste of Chaos).. really know how to get the kids into it. At the Sydney one, Wil encouraged everyone to crowd surf, and some guy pretty much fell on my neck :grumble: But The Last Sunrise was very good.
Hysteria January 24th, 2008, 12:44 pm At the Sydney one, Wil encouraged everyone to crowd surf, and some guy pretty much fell on my neck But The Last Sunrise was very good.

gipro2003 January 24th, 2008, 7:49 pm Seeed
Calle 13

Rapsoul
These are pretty much international bands but they are awesome
AmeliaPotter January 25th, 2008, 6:32 am He did that in Adelaide too.. and a Wall Of Death :scared: Yeah, he asked for a Death Wall here too... of course, when Bert asked for a Death Wall at the end it was waaaaay bigger. demonthes March 29th, 2008, 4:05 am Mindless Self Indulgence is one for my list. I know maybe.. 2 people who like them? Which is disappointing :(
Mindless Self Indulgence is quite amazing, I love their music. As for favorite bands that aren't well known, I'm not sure I can name many. I enjoy Turisas though they're probably well known in certain metal circles. Bands like Sonata Arctica and Royal Hunt are certainly high up on my list, though I know Sonata Arctica was previously mentioned on this list.
samedi April 6th, 2008, 7:54 pm I don't believe that Mindless Self Indulgence is very unknown, I know quite a few people who like them. But I suppose it's a thing which varies depending on which country you are in.
As for me:
The Amphetameanies;
Jack Peñate;
Animal Collective.
I'm fairly sure those three are quite unknown. Jack Peñate was played on the radio fairly frequently last year, but I've not heard much of him for a while.
Tlx April 7th, 2008, 4:06 am Vast.
When I'm driving in my car and my friends are riding along and I play their music they always like it even though they won't ever listen to them because they only listen to whats "cool".
WoahFroggie April 11th, 2008, 6:21 pm Vampire Weekend
I dont know if there well known yet, but they will be! I just saw them live (well it was february lol but still) They were sooo good! I dont know what genre they would fall in, but it makes for good happy music.

I dont know if there well known yet, but they will be! I just saw them live (well it was february lol but still) They were sooo good! I dont know what genre they would fall in, but it makes for good happy music.
They're becoming much more well known. They have the sound to make it and they probably will.
Most of my ipod songs are songs that not many people know so...
All Time Low
Allred
The Cab (close second)
The Hush Sound (fav band ever)
We the Kings
I think those are the ones that haven't been mentioned at any point.
Liselle April 22nd, 2008, 10:02 pm There are quite a few Irish bands that I like that wouldn't be well known.
Ash being one, The Stunning being a second (although technically they're broken up) and The Frank and Walters.
Hysteria April 23rd, 2008, 7:03 am I don't believe that Mindless Self Indulgence is very unknown, I know quite a few people who like them. But I suppose it's a thing which varies depending on which country you are in.
Yeah true. Before they toured here last month (Adelaide, Australia) I only knew one other person who liked them but I know they're quite popular in the US.
houseelf25 April 23rd, 2008, 7:11 pm REGINA SPEKTOR!! she's amazing! she's had some success lately in the US, but I like a lot of her earlier music.
padfootrules April 23rd, 2008, 8:27 pm The Arcade Fire and the moldy peaches are amazing and yet not many know of them :D
houseelf25 April 23rd, 2008, 8:32 pm omg i forgot about the arcade fire! :( they're great! i love their album "neon bible"
padfootrules April 23rd, 2008, 8:37 pm Me too!!!! They are beyond brilliant and my friends don't even know about them! The injustice in this world
_LoonyLovegood_ April 26th, 2008, 4:45 am If I answered this a year or two ago, it would have been literally all of my music, but then all of my bands became popular.
Cansei de Ser Sexy, Wheatus, Blonde Redhead, Acceptance, Copeland, Between The Trees, Kate Voegele, Azure Ray, Marla Sokoloff, The Fold. That's all that comes to mind right now.
Lil_G135 April 29th, 2008, 8:06 am Um... I do really like Kate Havnevik. She an English Norwegian singer with an amazing voice.. add beautiful music and interesting lyrics and it's quite a package! Grey's Anatomy fans would already know her work.
I'm not very good with labeling music, but she's been likened to Bjork, Kate Bush, and Imogen Heap a lot.
padfootrules May 9th, 2008, 6:34 am I want to add Cary Brothers to this list.... He is AMAZING!!!!!!!!! I love him!
AchelRay June 13th, 2008, 7:00 am 1997 is one I just found that I've decided I like a lot.
padfootrules June 13th, 2008, 10:52 am Alexi Murdoch is amazing and barely anyone knows about him :) Oh and Justin Timberlake... It is a shame no one knows about this young lad

Nightwish
I'm a big power metal fan.
zunit223 June 18th, 2008, 5:41 am Staple is a really good band (even though they broke up two years ago)
Killing Joke, Battlelore, Maylene and the Sons of Disaster, Submersed, The Bronx and Joe Jackson are all good artists
I like a lot of drum n bass music too and that stuff isn't well known
Lord June 20th, 2008, 10:45 am Shortlist... most are well known in the Indie culture but w/e.
Silver Jews (Indie/Alt. Country) : Check out American Water, one of the best albums back to front ever. Front man David Berman is one of the most talented writers in the world, he pens the most poignant, beautiful, honest, weird, hysterical, and insightful lyrics I've ever heard.
The Microphones (Indie/Lo-Fi)
Four Tet (Electronica)
Bridges and Powerlines (Power Pop/Indie) : Actually basically unknown to most!
The Fiery Furnaces (Indie/Experimental)
The Field (Electronic)
Fennesz (Electronic/Experimental)
Immortal Technique (Rap)
Iron & Wine (Indie)
DJ Danger Mouse (Rap)
Bon Iver (Folk/Indie/Singer-Songwriter) : Album For Emma, Forever Ago currently best reviews on Metacritic this year

Broken Social Scene (Indie) : Relatively well known though I feel everyone should know about them, my favorite band of all time.
Akron/Family (Indie/Rock)
The Album Leaf (Indie/Rock)
K.C. Accidental (Post-Rock) : Pretty much precedes BSS.
Madvillain (Rap) : Collaboration between Madlib and MF DOOM.
Mogwai (Post-Rock)
Explosions In The Sky (Post-Rock)
The National (Indie-Rock) : One of the best bands out there combining dark moodiness with perfect rock crescendos. They're gaining more publicity with each subsequent album release, Boxer in 2007 was hailed by some as the year's best and now they're touring with Modest Mouse.
Okkervil River (Indie)
Shearwater (Indie/Folk) : A side project by Okkervil River's Will Sheff.
The Olivia Tremor Control (Experimental/Indie) : Part of the Elephant 6 Collective!
Panda Bear (Electronic/Indie)

Sufjan Stevens (Indie/Singer-Songwriter)
Wilco (Alt. Country) : Have a huge following already hah.

Belle & Sebastian (Indie Pop)
Do Make Say Think (Post-Rock)
Stars (Indie/Rock)
Apostle of Hustle (Indie)
The Most Serene Republic (Indie)
Neutral Milk Hotel (Fuzz Folk/Indie) : In The Aeroplane Over The Sea... perhaps the best album of the 90s
Apples in Stereo (Indie)
Metric (Indie/Rock)
padfootrules June 20th, 2008, 12:14 pm I LOVE Iron & Wine!!!!!!!! You have great taste in music :D
drummerx July 2nd, 2008, 8:26 pm Lights (indie, pop) she's a fairly new singer from Toronto.
Her music is amazing and so peaceful. I love her voice.
GemmaBlack July 4th, 2008, 6:31 pm Jack's Mannequin isn't very well known in England but I love them.
Hysteria July 5th, 2008, 3:53 pm _LoonyLovegood_ I love Copeland :D They're great live, too. I saw them supporting Anberlin. Good stuff.
silverstarz July 5th, 2008, 8:11 pm The Spill Canvas, & Tokio Hotel [aren't really known in the states]
ryanke07 July 16th, 2008, 11:35 pm The National. If you haven't heard of them, seriously consider checking them out. Music is making a comeback.
Caliope July 22nd, 2008, 2:28 pm The Dreaming - what's left of the 90s industrial outfit Stabbing Westward, but in more of a punk/new wave direction musically.
Locksley - try to imagine The Beatles as a contemporary garage band with tighter melodies and gritter guitars, and that's Locksley.
Both of these bands are unknown enough that you can chat and hang out with them before and after shows - which I have done, a couple times with Locksley actually. They're great chaps, and deserve a larger fanbase.
AchelRay August 9th, 2008, 9:38 pm The Spill Canvas, & Tokio Hotel [aren't really known in the states]
I actually heard The Spill Canvas on the radio a couple nights ago as I was trying to fall asleep. I sat bolt upright and had a mini spazz attack.
Explosions In The Sky (Post-Rock)
I am in love with them right now. I've fallen asleep to them for the last couple weeks and I want to find more of their music.
vampiricduck August 30th, 2008, 12:36 am I'm not sure if either of these have been discussed, but I love Yiruma, he writes great classical piano music, and I also love the African band Freshlyground. They have a very individual sound that I think anybody would like.
And the Alabama 3. Those guys are brilliant.
AchelRay September 7th, 2008, 5:05 am If I answered this a year or two ago, it would have been literally all of my music, but then all of my bands became popular.
Cansei de Ser Sexy, Wheatus, Blonde Redhead, Acceptance, Copeland, Between The Trees, Kate Voegele, Azure Ray, Marla Sokoloff, The Fold. That's all that comes to mind right now.
Well let's see, CSS was featured on the iPod touch commercial and that got them on the radio, Kate Voegle is pretty popular right now, and I've heard of if not heard Between the Trees and Blonde Redhead. It's looking like you're going to get to find more music (not that that's a bad thing).
Now to update my list since I've found new music since April (thank goodness):
Backseat Goodbye
Brand New (well sorta, I know a couple people that like them)
Charlotte Sometimes (maybe, she released the How I Could Just Kill a Man video and it hit top 20)
Four Year Strong (haven't listened to them a lot)
Friday Night Boys (I don't really like them that much, but they're still in my itunes)
Hey Monday (They sound a bit like Paramore, but a bit more electronic)
I'll come back and edit this later. It's getting late.
walcnevar September 7th, 2008, 2:52 pm The Spill Canvas, & Tokio Hotel [aren't really known in the states]
Tokio Hotel are much hated in Europe
One of my favourite bands are VAST not many people seem to know them. But I listen to a lot of artists that some people haven't heard of but others have.. it just depends what music you listen too
Hysteria September 8th, 2008, 12:46 am Tokio Hotel are much hated in Europe
Why is that? Just wondering :)
Umm hmm I don't know if any of the bands I like now are what you'd call "unknown" though they probably were a few years ago.
I've recently got into Alter Bridge (saw them supporting Disturbed). Not many of my friends have heard of them (in fact I think the only ones who have are the ones who were at Disturbed ) but they're a good band. Good live too :)
