I've only seen some, but I'll order them anyway.

1. Transformers
2. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End
3. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (although I was quite disappointed)
4. Spiderman 3 (What a load of rubbish!)

I would, also, really like to see the Boune Ultimatum and the Simpsons Movie. :D

Harry Potter and the order of the phoenix of course!!!!!!! But after that I would have to say that it is Bourne Ultimatum, Ocean's thirteen (Why is not on the list? That movie was awesome!) and the Simpsons.

The funniest was Hot Fuzz

The most suprising(in a good way) Transformers. I expected a lot worse.

Biggest let down POTC 3. I expected a lot better

Still to come that I'm sure are going to be good

3.10 to Yuma
Atonement

Still to come that I think will be bad, but I'll watch anyway

Aliens Vs Predator: Requiem

:)

August 28th, 2007, 5:53 pm
There's another Alien vs. Predator? Geez, they'll do anything to make a buck, won't they. I haven't actually seen most of the shows on everyone's list. I did see Live Free or Die Hard. I think that could have been an excellent film if they'd gone with the R-rated cut, but the PG-13 cut seemed sanitized and a little uninspired.

I rented 300 expecting something like Sin City--but it wound up a lot closer to Robocop 2. It was all action and very little character development--don't get me wrong, the action was impressive. However, what made Sin City good was the combination of action and story and here, the story disappeared. Pathfinder had some potential, but there were large sections where the lighting was poor and the direction muddled, so some of the flight from the invading Vikings seemed like it was a race in circles around an endless cave.

Oh, and I could barely sit through 30 minutes of Hot Fuzz before my patience ran out--I know that's before the action gets into high gear, but my tolerance was down to pretty much nothing.

Another Alien film! Seriously, enoughs enough. They should have stopped after the first four.
I loved POC3, Spiderman 3, Bourne Ultimatum and Oceans 13, The Simpsons and DieHard 4.
And Harry Potter obviously!!

I really liked alot of movies but only a few could take spots as my favorites.

1. Harry Potter and Order of the Pheonix
2. Transformers
3. Spider-Man 3
4. Pirates of the Caribbean - At Worlds End

Ocean's 13 was far better than Ocean's 12 and only slightly below Ocean's 11--definitely a quality caper film.

I must say I haven't watched many movies this year. There are only 4 I can think of ...

1. Simpsons
2. Pirates of the Caribbean 3
3. Harry Potter 5
3. Mr. Bean's Holiday

But I actually found all 4 quite good. And there are a lot of movies I still want to watch.

300 is the best Ive seen this year, easily.
The worst has got to be POTC3. I hated it with a passion. It ended and I was left thinking "what the?". It had no character or ... nothing the first movie had that was so entertaining.

OotP was.. well it was a HP movie, what more can one say?
I thought The Simpsons Move was quite good. Better than I thought it would be anyway, don't think Ive seen any others.. Oh Spiderman 3. That was bad I know, but I still managed to enjoy it.

Still want to see Transformers.

So far, I'd go with something like:

1. Grindhouse
2. Hot Fuzz
3. Transformers
4. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

Everything else I've seen so far this year hasn't really made much of an impression, but I've still got a lot to look forward to.

Definately harry potter and the order of the pheonix, i mean what else? lol.

After that theres a film which you missed what i absolutely love and have bought the soundtrack already and its hairspray. Its so funny and the songs are ace, john travolta is a legend.

Amazing Grace was good, but if it ends up being a best film of the year, it would be by default because there was nothing good after spring.:sigh: 300 was great with effects and decent with battles, but it felt like there was no story, none of the added development and texture that made Sin City so good.

In no order:

Hot Fuzz

Transformers

Have also seen Fantastc Four 2 but it just didn't work for me - A super-space storm thing as a baddie?!

jordmundt6
August 31st, 2007, 12:47 am
Brad Bird is usually reliable for a good story and good animation. I haven't had a chance to see Ratatouille yet, but the snippets I have seen look promising.

GodricHollow--If you want to blame someone about that villain in Fantastic Four 2, shouldn't you blame Stan Lee, they used a novelization of his comic strip and were fairly faithful about it.

GodricHollow

Nope. Never read a Marvel comic in my life, and every incarnation bar the movie I've seen of Galactus has him in some kind of humanistic form.

jordmundt6

Really? Supposedly, they used a novelization of the Surfer's orgin for the script in the film--and in that novel, Galactus was not a humanoid.

I also really liked Ratatouille and, of course, Harry Potter.

I liked the 40-Year-Old Virgin, but I'm gunshy about Superbad, and frankly felt insulted by the previews of Knocked Up--plus, I'm not a Heigl fan. Still, I may have to consider rentals when these films come out on DVD.

The best movie I saw this year was Ratatouille. ..
Well,I keep on hearing very good reviews of this film (I generally like Pixar films) , even the infamous talkbackers like it, so this is getting nearer to the top spot on my list of films to rent...which is the way I see the majority of new (or newish) films as it's very hard for me to get to a cinema. :)

I have seen a lot of wonderful movies this 2007 and I'm expecting more especially that the holidays are coming. As of now, my list of best movies 2007 (http://www.mysubtitles.com/best_movies/2007) are the following:

1. Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix - The best! Just like the other Harry Potter movies.
2. Transformers
3. 300
4. Die Hard 4.0
5. Ratatouille
6. Shrek 3
7. Spiderman 3
8. Bourne Ultimatum

1. Transformers - the best movie I've seen in years and I've seen it six times so far XD
2. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End - Not as good as the first two movies but it's still a good movie
3. Evan Allmighty - Funnier than I thought it would be
4. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - It was OK, better than GoF but it could have been so much better

Well, I have now expanded my movie viewing to include OOTP and Shrek the third. Nevertheless, Ratatouille is still the best thing I saw this year. We'll see how I like Pirates 3 if I can get to it this week, but I have a feeling that my top spot is not gonna change.

I'm not a movie person. I have seen only 3.

1. Ratatouille-I haven't seen this movie but I saw all the videos they had at yahoo movie, and it was really fun, and I was just glued to my computer screen. From those bits, I really enjoyed it better then any of the movies I actually saw. I can't wait till the DVD comes out.

The 3 I saw: They were all boring and not fun to watch. I keep looking at my watch. Not even hot Orlando kept my interest.

2. OOTP
3. POTC: 3
4. Spiderman 3

I was too bored to even finish Hot Fuzz, not my kind of humor.

I think this was the movie's biggest mistake... everyone thought from the trailers that it was going to look like Sin City... and it really didn't. The movie was good... but not the best of 2007.

Though according to the link in this post by LOVEWEASLEY04, I am wrong! 300 is in first. OoTP is in second :(.

The Best one: Ocean's Thirteen

Second Best (and close tie-in for best :p) Ratatouille

and I also liked Pirates III, Order of the Phoenix and Hairspray very much. (And as soon as seeing The Golden Compass - I've got high expectations in that one - it might be in this list, too  )

jordmundt6

Fleur--I saw Ocean's 13 and enjoyed it immensely. It's has much more in common with the delicious 11 than with the first sequel. It's on the list somewhere, but I wouldn't put it at the top.

Fury--I don't mind the visual distinctions. The look was amazing and distinct from Sin City--I was fully prepared for that, and the rock in the background of the trailer really sold it. I guess where it falls short is the plotline. 300 was like a hack-and-slash video game adaptation or a spaghetti western. All action, no character development. Sin City relied mostly on action and effects, but there were stories and characters there--people to latch onto and care about. 300 really didn't offer any of that--making it quite similar to RoboCop 2 in that respect. I was surprised that Miller who loves complexity as well as grit would be outraged at how his RoboCop 2 idea got mutilated and be pleased with a similarly thin version of 300.

Well, jordmundt, it shows that I didn't see that many films this year in cinema, doesn't it  When I tried to recall which ones I've watched, I couldn't recall more than those, plus Spiderman. And out of these Thirteen was my absolute favourite, hands down

Here's what I think of all the Summer Movies I saw:

1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Loved it, especially the end fighting scenes, those were sweet. Can't wait to buy it once it comes out. :tu:

2. Ratatouille. Very funny movie and Pixar did great like they normally do. I'm renting this one.

3. Transformers. It was better than I thought (I thought it was going to suck big time), but I think some parts could have been better and some parts were kind of boring. I already have rented this one, just watched it again tonight.

4. Spiderman 3. It wasn't good, but it wasn't bad either. The action sequences were good, but everything else was kind of so, so. :relax: Maybe I just need to watch it again. I'm renting this one.

5 Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. I didn't see this in theaters, but I rented it awhile ago. Better than the original, but it was still bad. There was barely any action in it and the story was LAME. Especially the ending. And so was the supposed "villian". Not even Jessica Alba could save this for me.

6. Pirates of the Carribean 3. I almost fell asleep during the movie, not because it was bad, but because I was so tired from the night before. I will probably end up buying it since I already own the other two.

There were alot of other movies I didn't get to see. Shrek the Third was one, although I heard it sucked, but I will still rent it. I also want to rent Live Free or Die Hard and The Simpsons Movie (Everybody at school liked that one).

OotP of course, and Across the Universe. Oh, and PotC3. :D

November 5th, 2007, 2:31 am
summer movies I saw:

Transformers: Guy movie, but great! I loved it, the visuals were stunning and the story actually had some meat to it. It was better then I expected.

OotP: I loved this movie. I thought it was a great adaption, although short. I loved that they actually balanced the trio a bit more and didn't make Ron a scaredy-cat! Awesome!

Hairspray: So cute! The soundtrack was awesome and it was a lot of fun to watch. Definitely a feel good movie.

PotC 3: Oh. my. goodness. I loved this movie! I loved the storyline although the ending ****** me off. There should've been away to get around that, but I'm not goint to say anything else if someone hasn't seen it.

Ratatouille: Proving why Pixar is the best. This was such an adorable movie! I enjoyed it very much.

I love OotP, but other than that, the only other movies I watched that I really liked were:

Transformers. I haven't seen special effects that good in my life. It looked SO real. It was incredible! (and some parts of the movie were hilarious.)

300. This is an incredible movie, in my opinion.

LoonyMagic
November 5th, 2007, 3:37 pm
:agree: Stardust was far better than I expected. I only went to see it because my friends wanted to, so I thought I'd watch it as well. Although it was quite predictable, it was still a really good film. Plus, it was great to see Clare Danes in something else :D! She's a really good actress and it's a shame that after Romeo and Juliet her career went a bit downhill. Hopefully this will bring her back on track :)

300 was an effects bonanza, but there was no real meat to it. What made Sin City so great was the combination of mind-blowing effects and story with actual character development. 300 was a lot more Robocop 2 than Sin City, which was disappointing considering the original author.

1. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End

3. Transformers
4. The Simpson's Movie
5. 300

Another film that I think deserves a mention is Hairspray. It was absolutely brilliant in my opinion.

I saw this film and didn't really enjoy it. I think the similarity to the first film is what made it a bit boring to me. There didn't seem to be anything new. I think it's time they left the Ocean's series be. Just my opinion. :)

My favorite movies this year are:

1. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (can't wait for the dvd!!)
2. Hot Fuzz - another brilliant bit of slightly Americanized British humor
3. Spiderman 3 - except it sucks that Harry died
4. 300 - amazing cinematography all the way through
5. Transformers - I thought I'd dislike it but it's actually very good
6. Pirates of the Caribbean 3 - not as good as the first two but enjoyable
7. Wild Hogs - yes, I know . . . mindless, silly, typical mid-life crisis flick but I just couldn't get enough of the antics of William H. Macy, a true talent

I just watched Zodiac last night... and I add that to the best movies of 2007. This movie was AWESOME! If you haven't seen it yet, watch it...

I enjoyed Zodiac as well. I was particularly impressed by the way the era was captured by wardrobe, sets, and the actual cinematograpy. I had read the book a couple of years ago and was eager to see how the movie would turn out. Yes Fury, it was awesome. Thanks for mentioning that one as it should have been at least at number 5 on my list.

I thought it was good, but really dragged out towards the end. The thing for me was that they never actually found the killer in real life, so the movie just didn't have a concrete ending for me!

So no one has Waitress on their list? I find that surprising.

I saw Superbad--there were some funny bits, but it was a little crass for me. Maybe Judd Apatow (is that how you spell his name?) just isn't my bag. I think that's why no one said Superbad.

I saw Shrek the Third--which I was predisposed to like because I have fond memories of the first two--but it was just so tepid that I couldn't enjoy any of it. There was barely a plot and the whole Arthur subplot (a major section of the movie) truly dragged.

I think Spider-Man 3 is probably getting a pass because of the first two films and the fact that the action and some bits of the plot were actually interesting. It really felt like they were trying to put a bullet in the franchise though, and the ending was SO depressing--much worse than the first one. Both Peter and MJ are just absolutely shattered by the very end, so him showing up to offer his hand is--well, it felt hollow and sad. Not the closing note you really want to strike in a series like this one. Not at this stage.

I saw Pirates 3--well 7/8 of Pirates 3. The quality was back. This one actually felt like it had a plot with a beginning, a middle, and an end. Jonathan Pryce was an absolute waste this time out, though I rather enjoyed Norrington's noble demise, in which he truly redeemed himself. I'm not sold on Will as the permanent captain of the Dutchman because I think he runs into Cecrops problems.

Anyone.

Only the animated movies are OK. But animated movies are something appart.

As I was saying in the topic about the most waited movies of 2008: We have now a bunch of teen movies full of effects and action and fantasy but , at the end, none of those movies are good as whole.

I was expecting all those movies of 2007, POTC 3, HP 5 and I didnt like those movies truly.
POTC 3 is the worst of all. You canīt say a movie is good just becoz it has great action scenes and effects (this movie truly has it) just becoz....
HP 5... incredible book wasted in a movie

300 was OK.

Fleur--Cecrops....hmm. How to explain this. Well, I guess I just admitted to being a Xena fan. There was an episode (I think it was in the third season) where they used the idea of the Flying Dutchman from Vagner and set it in Ancient Greece. Now, the plot they had could be an actual myth that inspired the opera, I don't know. Here's the "myth."

Long ago, when the cities of Greece were first forming, the gods vied for the honor of being named the patron of specific cities. One such contest ocurred between Athena and Poseidon for a crucial unnamed city-state. Each god used divine power to bestow a gift on the city. The citizens selected a man to judge the gifts and the god and goddess agreed to abide by his ruling. First, Poseidon struck the ground with his trident and a spring flowed through the city, but when the citizens tasted the water, it was salty--undrinkable. Next, Athena stretched out her hand and up sprang an olive tree, that later became a grove--beautiful and utilitarian. The trees were lovely to look upon and the olives were good for food. So, the judge declared Athena the winner and the city was named Athens. Poseidon...didn't take the rejection well. Athens' appointed judge was a sea captain named Cecrops. The next time Cecrops set sail, Poseidon cursed him. The curse prevented Cecrops from every anchoring at any port. He seemed doomed to wander the seas until he died, or "until love set him free." Athena stepped in and granted Cecrops immortality. Sound familiar?

Now, Cecrops loved a woman in a distant port, and for the first few years he would anchor just outside the harbor of her city and they would call to one another, him in the crow's nest and her standing on the cliffs. Soon, however, she sickened and died--and Cecrops abandoned all hope for relief from the curse.

If Will becomes the Dutchamn's permanent Captain he wil stay the same age...probably. However, Elizabeth will age and eventually die, leaving him all alone with nothing but his Charon duties for comfort. (Charon was Hades' servant who ferried the dead across the River Styx.) Does that clarify my comment?

GodricHollow--I don't own the film yet and I had a hard enough time just finding the time to watch the film from start to finish. What did the lost scene communicate? I thought the only way for a captain to be relieved was to destroy his heart?

Pirates 3 may not qualify as the best film of the year, but it was actually good all-around and had a fairly coherent plot with good performances, something that Dead Man's Chest lacked.

About Hot Fuzz--several people have lauded the film on this thread and many critics adored it. Frankly, I couldn't abide the humor and just gave up after half an hour.

ah, thank you, jordmundt!!! :tu:

Not a Xena fan here, obviously. But I absolutely agree with your conclusion. I had EXACTLY the same idea when I walked out of the cinema, and told my friend, 'that's all very well if the Captain's in love with a goddess. But Elizabeth will get older. The next meeting might be great still, but the time after that, she's already twice as old as him. Technically, she could be his mother then. And on Will's forth visit, she'll be a grandma, IF she's alive still. That's a hell of a bad deal'

Nobody has said Disturbia yet?

My top 5 movies of 2007:
1. Disturbia - Surprise of 2007.
2. Transformers - Lived up to the previews of the movie.
3. Pirates of the Caribbean - The last hour of the movie was great, other 2 hours were bad.
4. I Am Legend - Saw it last night, it was really cool.
5. Harry Potter: OOtP - I'll put HP5 here because I really like HP, but they changed the story too much.

Fleur--who's that in your sig? It looks like Liz Turner and then Captain Norrington. Who is it really?

Apparently, someone who already owns the DVD found a nugget on the commentary to indicate that Will wasn't going to be the permanent captain but would only have to serve 10 years (but, of course, they cut that scene). We HAD to see the kraken's corpse, but they couldn't be bothered to explain Will's full arrangement.:grumble::grumble:

Tlx--Apparently Hitchcock is money, even if you just steal his ideas (Disturbia is a 21st century update of a Hitchcock classic, Rear Window). I saw Transformers--the effects were great, up to a point. The battles between the robots were confusing. You couldn't tell who was who or who was winning. Plus, a lot of the rest of the plot was...well, silly. They were trying to capitalize on National Treasure audiences and it fell flat. Really too bad, because the guy who starred in the show has demonstrated some real acting chops (Greatest Game Ever Played, and Disturbia, most recently).

We had to see the Kraken's corpse indeed, jordmundt. Because it was the equivalent to the Death Star - the ultimate, invincible weapon - and had it been alive still during AWE, the plot wouldn't have worked. ;)

My siggy - why, yes, it IS the lovely Commodore and Elizabeth. I could never understand why she'd prefer the little puppy. He's older than I am (well, a few months), but whenever I see Orlando Bloom, I'm developing maternal instincts. The Commodore was a fine man, to quote the heroine

jordmundt6
December 17th, 2007, 3:03 am
Well, actually, the Commodore wasn't a fine man. The Commodore BECAME a fine man. His experiences with Will and Elizabeth forced him to mature and improve in ways that never would have happened if he were simply safely in the navy. He had the noblest death of any character at any point in the series, even better than Jack's death.

Also, since Will is the better husband and man, I don't have a problem with her choice of him over the Admiral.

The biggest part about destroying the Death Star is seeing it done. Seeing the corpse without an explanation here was just a plot stitch and didn't feel earned.

Also, since we know now that Will will be released from his bonds and allowed to return to his wife after one tour, I think I'm okay with how things turned out. Frankly, after the second film, I had visions of Norrington replacing Jones as the Tentacled Terror of the Seas because his unrequited love for Elizabeth would soon turn to hate.

I didn't see too many films this year, but this is how I'd rank all the ones I saw:

1) Pirates (not hard to follow like I heard everyone saying, great music and special effects)
2) Pan's Labyrinth (original and engrossing)
3) Children of Men (interesting storyline with great cinematography)
4) I Am Legend (creepy, sad, and overall very well made)
5) Harry Potter (probably my least favorite of the HP films)
6) Reign Over Me (surprisingly interesting and a tearjerker)
7) Atonement (the only film I saw this year that I disliked. Greatly.)

The new National Treasure movie wasn't that bad. It wasn't as good as the first, but it was better than a lot of the other movies I've seen lately. So here's my list again (in no particular order):
1) HP OOTP-I honestly thought it was the best of the movies thus far, but not by much.
2) The Simpson's Movie-It was better than the more recent episodes, thank god.
3) Hairspray- LOVED this movie, and now I want to see the Broadway show even more.
4) National Treasure-I thought it was great, as I said before. The first one was still better, as usual, but it was really well thought through and better than some of the other Disney action films that have been released in recent years (i.e. the 2nd pirates movie)
5) Pirates 3-nice wrap up to everything, but I'm really hoping that they don't decide to make another.
6) Across the Universe-this was spectacular and beautiful and just....AMAZING.
there are still a few movies that I want to see before I actually make a full-on, in order list, like Sweeney Todd and Enchanted.

This was a pretty good year for movies overall.

Superbad was completely amazing and uncomfortably authentic. Not to even mention McLovin, a name sure to go down in legend.

Hot Fuzz was so British I just had to laugh. By the final fight scene it was one of the funniest movies that I've ever seen.

Spider Man 3 was light years better than Spider Man 2 in my opinion, even though all of my friends completely hated it.

300 was, well, ...unique. I just couldn't take it seriously at all (which, of course, is what they intended). The fight scenes were pretty tight, however.

Transformers was the best movie of the year. Actually the best movie since The Return of the King. It was everything that it was supposed to be, nothing more and nothing less. Nothing entertained me more.

The worst movie of the year was Pirates 3. When compared to the genius of the 1st one, it is incredibly bad.

Bourne Ultimatum
Once

Sicko

I saw Sicko, it was pretty good. I guess Transformers is well-made fluff (sort of), but that's all it is.

I saw the third Bourne and really enjoyed it, though the loose end with the tech from the first two films was rather annoying.

Pirates 3 was better than Pirates 2 and actually seemed to have a plot. I enjoyed it quite a bit.

Superbad--I guess it was authentic--but I guess I'm just not the target audience. Oh well.

For some reason, I couldn't stand Hot Fuzz.

300 was great on effects and the fight scenes were well-made, but it was all flash and no substance. It made Sin City look downright introspective.

Pan's Labyrinth, while brilliant, was actually an '06 release.

I think I saw it three times altogether, it was so original, even though it completely changed the ending of the original book by Neil Gaiman. I love the new ending though, it's much more fitting for a fairytale. Ilan Eshkeris's soundtrack is great too, if you liked the film, check that out.

Oh, and there are other great films form 2007 that I'm only thinking of now. Black Snake Moan, Into the Wild, Easter Promises, Lars and the Real Girl, Enchanted... And Atonement. That was really good actually. I'd put it in my list of "bests" for the year.

That's what made it so very very good! Barely anybody noticed! We all take music for granted in films, so it was a real master stroke to just forget about it altogether. I mean, it wasn't needed to add tension, to add fear, to add suspense.. It was just awesome.

Enchanted. Not even the summer blockbusters come close.....save for Ratatouille.

Though Freedom Writers was really good

Yeah, the Great Debators. That's it.

Enchanted is a spoof of fairy tales while being an homage to Disney Animation. Alan Menken and Stephen Shwartz wrote the music for it, and it's basically what would happen if a would-be fairy tale princess would be sent down a well on her wedding day only to come out of a manhole in cynical, live-action New York by a wicked queen who's henchman follows the handsome prince as he tries to rescue her. Meanwhile, the heroine, Giselle, stays with a divorce lawyer of all people. If your a fan of Amy Adams, Susan Sarandon(Queen Narissa), cgi chipmunks that dont sing, James Marsden(Prince Edward), Patrick Dempsey(Robert), Timothy Spall (Nathaniel), Movie musicals and/or Disney Animation, this is a must! There are hints to past Disney movies, both obvious and subtle.

2007 was a good year, even if I only saw a few of the movies you mentioned.
