This thread is to find out what you think about Emma Watson's first non-potter film? She will star in "Ballet Shoes" set to air on the BBC sometime in December. Mugglenet has some pictures of the set there are only three but you can see them here!;

Emma Watson Talks Ballet Shoes
Published by Dan on 08/13/2007

Emma Watson has made an E.M.S (Emma Messaging Service) post on her web site about her upcoming role in Ballet Shoes. She will spend some time this summer making Ballet Shoes and is currently learning ballet!

E.M.S. from Emma Watson:

Hey everyone!
I really thought I was going to take this summer off and then.. I fell in love with Ballet shoes.
I couldn't let such an amazing project go. I think the books are really really special.
I loved Pauline from the start; she makes mistakes and comes across badly at times but I really felt as though I understood her..I share a lot of Pauline's passions and insecurities.
The cast is really amazing and I cannot wait to work with everyone. I really feel like I need to do this, I am scared but excited.
Hope you are all well
Love Emma x
(P.S) I have started some ballet training which I love; and yes my hair is going blonde.. : )

Will you watch the film?

if so, is it out of interest about the book/ and film or is it just to support Emma?

All three members of our trio will all have starred in films outside of Potter, have you or will you watch them? Rupert Grint starred in "Driving Lessons" you can see the trailer here:

There's also "Thunderpants" thanks to Ginnypotter19

Hey, what about Rupert Grint's Thunder Pants????

I am sooo dieing to see Ballet Shoes whenever it comes out! I was just about to start this thread actually,, lucky I checked your link. Anyway, it looks good, and I've read what it is meant to say and the plot sounds really good. Emma will do a great job!

I heard that Emma was doing Ballet Shoes and i'm quite excited!!! It will be really nice to see Emma doing something apart from Harry Potter, we will be able to watch her acting in another role. After watching Thunderpants and Driving Lessons with Rupert Grint, i have shown more respect for Ruperts acting, as he shows brillinat potential in both movies. Also Daniel, the other productions i've seen of his, you can really see how developed and fantastic his acting really is and i hope this will show us another side of Emmas acting.
I can't wait to see it!!!!!

I'm rather very excited to see it. I've been waiting for Emma to do something either than Harry Potter for a while now, after watching all of the other actor's productions I'm thrilled to see how she will work. People are always saying on the Harry Potter films she over takes the two boys and is the best, I would like to see if the critics are right, which I'm sure they are.

Thanks for telling me about Thunder pants! I'm in a litlle tiny town somewhere in the US. I hadn't even heard of it, and "Driving..." was never in theater's here, it just hit video's a couple weeks ago. I have to order Ballet shoes and December boys, I'm way excited though! I'll get on youtube and look at thunder pants! Thanks!!!
Also I never saw my boy jack, i'm excited for December Boys and Ballet shoes!
She's a really good actress, i read the books when i was little, and i'm really excited to see her outside of Hermione (even though I love her as Hermione)!!!

Although I'm not interested in any of the trio actors enough to see any of their other films and I hold a pretty negative opinion of Emma's techinical acting, I do really hope it works out for her. I can tell it's pretty important for her to succeed at this and I hope she does. And who knows? Maybe she'll be able to act more naturally without the corporate powers on her back. She must be relieved-if only for a few months.

I agree with you, mostly. Except I am quite interested in what the Trio are going to do after HP is over. :p But I agree with what you say about Emma Watson's acting skills. I think that she has improved though, and I'm sure she will continue to do so. I will probably watch Ballet Shoes just out of curiosity. :D

I'm not the biggest fan as Emma as Hermione, but maybe this new role will suit her better. All I want to see is her acting naturally which she can't seem to do as Hermione. I really do hope that this goes well for her :D

I really wouldn't be able to decide, mostly because ALL THREE OF THEM were chosen for the biggest roles in HP, so aparently, all three of them act really good, and to me, they really can. So I can't choose a favorite. Though, Dan's crying. . ..

I'm quite interested to see Emma play something other than Hermione. I loved the book, I have a very old ,treasured (dog eared and tea stained :p ) copy of the book. Which, strangely enough, is on the shelf below my Potter books. The only worry I have is Emma's age(too old), but she might pull it off :)

:)

Emma Watson has been filming for a role as a schoolgirl in new BBC One drama Ballet Shoes.
The 17-year-old Harry Potter star plays orphan Pauline Fossil in the adaptation of the 1936 kids' book.

There's not too much change for Emma from her well-known role as Hermione Granger - she's wearing school uniform!

The programme is going to be shown at Christmas time and tells the story of three orphans who are adopted by their uncle, who's a wacky explorer.

The three girls all have their own dreams. Pauline (Emma Watson) longs to be an actress, Petrova (Yasmin Paige) yearns to fly aircraft and Posy (Lucy Boynton) seems born to be a ballerina.

But when Great Uncle Matthew disappears, the money runs out - and the girls have a struggle on their hands.

The book Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild was first published in September 1936.

I would love to see this movie and I hope they put it on DVD. I've been waiting to see Emma take on something other than Hermione. Dan and Rupert have both done a few other projects which will help them ensure life after Potter. Emma didn't seem too interested up until now.

I haven't read the "shoe" books. The first time I heard about them was Meg Ryan talking about them in "You've Got Mail." I guess it's time to read them.

Well, I've never been a fan of Emma as Hermione, she is too stiff as an actress. But perhaps she will do better in something new? Hopefully.

I really do hope that if she doesn't do well that she just accepts it and finds a new proffession. I do hate it when child starts land roles just because they are famous. I don't think that has happened much with this trio, but I also hope it doesn't start to happen.

I am seriously offended that the article used the word Squaw. I couldn't even really focus on anything else but that. It is an incredibly derogatory word, I can't believe they would use it!

But to stay on topic...I really don't know if Emma will do well, I guess we'll have to wait and see. But I do think that if she doesn't do well, that maybe she should try to persue (pretty sure i spelled that wrong, but it's past midnight and i'm tired) some other career.

Still really offended by the article. :grumble:

I think that Emma will do a GREAT job in ballet shoes. I really hope that it shows on BBC America so I can see it. I think that out of the trio Emma is the best actor there. She has done a great job in acting and I think that she will go very far in acting. I hope to see her do more movies,plays,t.v. shows and such. I do not think that she is only getting this role because she is famouse. She is a great actress. Her acting is always very reallistic and I think that she will bring the charecter of Pauline to life. I have always loved the ballet shoes, and I am so excited that Emma is doing it.

Oh, I didn't think as it as of shocked. It's more of, Rupert did Thunder Pants in 2001 to get rid of his Ron image right away, it took Dan a little bit to do Extras, Equus, My Boy Jack, and December Boys, but he got them out, Emma we are surprised mostly because she had said that she wanted to go to school before she continued acting after Harry Potter, and it's going to be great to see her in a different role before she breaks for a while.

Ballet Shoes update!!!!!!!!!!:p you can see this article at www.mugglenet.com

Emma Watson's official website has been updated with the following news:

"Many of you may not know that Emma has little identical twin sisters, and a little brother (Toby) aged four; these are the children of her father, who has remarried since he and Emma's mother divorced in 1995. When Emma was filming Ballet Shoes the director was looking for a little girl to play the part of the young Pauline when she is first introduced into the film aged two; we can now exclusively reveal that Emma's twin sisters Nina and Lucy (who were three just last Monday!) were cast and have acted in this role and will therefore appear in the BBC production of Ballet Shoes which will air in the UK at Christmas time!"

Yeah! The Watson actresses haha. or future ones.

I think its sweet that she gets to work with her sisters and everything, and it will be great for a flashback scene, if they somewhat resemble her so that it's believable. But I have to say, I hate it when movies (or the disney channel, which seems to be fond of doing this) makes stars out of famous people's younger brother's and sisters.

I hate the disney channel with a passion, for reasons I don't actually know, but my little sister loves it, so I am often forced to watch tv shows filled with stars' younger siblings...even ones who really can't act. It seems as though these networks are more interested in having so-and-so's younger sibling acting in something than they are about the fact that so-and-so's younger sibling isn't a good actor/actress.

I hope that's not the case with this one.

ginnypotter19

HMMM... Yea, they'll prob use flashbacks from the actual movies again.
... sorry to get a little off subject, but HP won some awards at the national movie awards, (in the UK) Ummm... Dan and Rupert were nomenated for best male performance, Dan won!!! The other canidates wer Daniel Craig and Jhonny Depp (i think i misspelled those) ...Emma was nominated for Best female performance and won!
The best movie award also went to OOTP. it was up against Pirates of the Carribeann ( again butchered it) and the James Bond film.

November 16th, 2007, 11:12 pm
So yesterday I watched the 1975 BBC version of Ballet Shoes and I have changed my mind about Emma Watson's ability to portray this:

Now I'm almost sure that she won't be able to do it...nothing to her acting ability. I'm still waiting to see if she can act the part, but as far as looking the part, I'm afraid she'll fail. I hadn't realized until I watched it that the character she'll be playing is 12 years old. Emma already looks older than her 16 years (is she 16??) to me. There's no way in my mind that anyone will buy her as a 12 year old, even with hair and makeup changes. I'm sorry, I'm not trying to offend her or anyone with this, I just don't think it will be believable at all. Until yesterday, I thought the part was for a 15-ish year old.

Hermi0nechik92

Um...she's 17, Idk if they're keeping her as a 12 year old...hmmm...we'll have to wait and see won't we?!?

I've just watched Ballet Shoes on tv tonight. It was one of my favourite books as a child ( a very long time ago), and I was looking forward (but with some trepidation) to seeing a new take on the old story. I needn't have worried, it was all superb. Attention to detail, acting, the whole feel of the period piece was done as only the BBC (IMO) can - brilliant. And no-one should worry about Emma's ability as an actress. An accomplished performance, sympathetic to the role - a joy to watch.

Ballet Shoes was a delightful production. :tu: What a lovely sense of period, and it was a very touching story. :)

I thought all three girls were excellent, adorable and perfectly cast: Emma as Pauline, Yasmin Paige as Petrova and Lucy Boynton as Posy. :agree:

There was also Victoria Wood as Nana and Emilia Fox as Garnie, plus the superb Eileen Atkins as Posy's Russian dance teacher, and the wonderful Harriet Walters and Gemma Jones (Madam Pomfrey!) in fun cameo roles.

Not forgetting Richard Griffiths (Uncle Vernon!) as the girls' adoptive guardian Gum!

I was very impressed with Emma's acting in this. She was very well cast as Pauline ... it was amusing to see Pauline become a self-centred little wannabe, rather like a 1930s version of Lindsay Lohan  and then receive a well-deserved lesson in humility.

The scene in which Pauline was acting in a film as King Charles' daughter and had to show a lot of emotion on screen was very good ... Emma really convinced me in this, and I have greater confidence now that her Hermione can rise to the emotional heights necessary for the final two HP films. :)

Desraelda
December 28th, 2007, 1:52 pm
I'm glad to read all the positive reviews of Emma's performance. I was very impressed with her in the first two HP films, but felt she's been mediocre since. At least it sounds now like she has a future as an actress and a couple more positive roles like this one should nail that down.

Now all that's left is for the BBC to put Ballet Shoes onto a Region 1 DVD so those of us on the other side of the pond can enjoy it as well.

December 28th, 2007, 8:27 pm
I was very impressed by her acting in this - my problems with her are 1) she is hopeless as Hermione and 2) she cannot control her eyebrows - they just jerk up and down with no rhyme or reason. But Ballet Shoes was brilliant - weren't her younger twin sisters or something supposed to be in it? Who did they play?

I was really keen to watch this, mainly cos while I think Watson is a good actress, she is hopelessly miscast as Hermione. I can cope with this cos for me potter books and movies are totally different, and I can't ever hope for the cast to look as they do in my mind.
Anyway I thought she was really good in ballet shoes; at first I was like, hey, that's Hermy, but after that first scene I actually stopped thinking this and started thinking of her as Pauline cos she was so good. I loved the bit when she was in a film, cos it reminded me of that around-for-five-minutes story about Watson complaining about constant takes in Potter.
I did prefer the red haired kid but only in terms of character; in acting ability they were about equal.
I actually can't remember if I read the book when I was a kid; parts of it did ring a bell, so maybe I did. I'm going to have to look it up.
Anyone recognise Teatime from Hogfather? it took me ages to make the connection...

I enjoyed it and I think she was good and didn't make you think Hermione

My main criticisms are that the girls are all too old, where did the romance come from and what is up with Posy's hair? I enjoyed it but maybe a tad less because I knew the book and TV/film adaptations never quite match up with the images in your head

I enjoyed Ballet Shoes , as I said in my earlier post, but it was interesting over the weekend to get a more negative reaction from a friend of mine, who read the book as a child and still loves it. She was very disappointed with the TV drama and wanted to rant about it. She said that in the book Posy is very much the central character but they totally downplayed her role in the TV drama so that Posy came across as a rather self-centred, spoiled brat. :( Which I agree with, actually. :( Pauline and Petrova came across as rather more rounded, and Pauline in particular came through her spoilt, self-centred phase.

And my friend also hated the invented romance! - she felt it completely detracted from the main focus of the story, which was the struggle of the Fossil girls.

None of this is a comment on the quality of the acting: all three young actresses playing the Fossil sisters were absolutely excellent, not least Emma. :)

For those poor benighted souls who don't live in Britain you can see a perfectly legal copy of the show at TV catchup (http://www.tvcatchup.com/watch/13869/)
Thank you so much for that link.

PS: I went to the link and you have to be a resident of the UK. But thanks anyway.

I liked it, it was brilliant! Emma was really good! She really fited in with her surroundings and was brilliant playing the role she had.
 and uncle Vernon...i don't kno his name...i looked at him and i was like Woah!
My faourite character was Petrova, don't know why but i liked her. I think Pauline-Emma was in the middle she was keen on what she wanted to do and did it but Posy, she was soo annoying!

I missed it, so thanks for the link- it was really good. I read it ages ago so could only faintly remember the storyline but it was enjoyable.

 Oh wow! I've seen it, but I'd quite like to see it again :D Didn't realise it was on DVD. They obviously realised that a lot of people who hadn't been able to watch it, would still want to see it. :)

Well, good for the UK fans, but I want word on a US release date! I'm not even that interested in the story, but for some reason I'm more curious to see Emma outside of HP than any of the other younger actors.

I think this movie was fine, but I don't like the way the sisters (Emma and the other girl named Posie) were acting. They seem to be very ambitious, except for the second one (I think). But I think they're very talented ladies. I love the way Emma cries. Lol.
