I did a search and didn't find anything but im sorry if it has been discussed, i was just wondering what do u guys think the best song ever wrtten is or what is your favourite song of all time is.

IMO Mr. Brightside by the killers is a modern classic and i think i will still be listened to and loved in 20/30/40 years time, by new generatinos as well.

Another song which i love is like a prayer by madonna, im not sure why but i would say it is my favorite ever. All i know is i used to watch the video over and over again when i was younger on my dads copy of madonna's immaculate collecton of videos lol.

So what do you guys reckon?

That is a really hard decision to make. I really can't think of one in particular that I like that much more than any other to say that I think it is the best ever written. I do however happen to love Journey's Dont Stop Believin'. I don't know a person who doesn't love that song!!!

This is a great idea for a topic but there are going to be like a million people on here arguing because they all are gonna disagree. That is why I wanted to try and reply first.

I really like the first one cause it reminds me of me and my friends....the second one i just like the words and with Reba's voice it is so pretty......the last just has a really awesome beat!!

I think the problem is that you cant define what makes a 'best song ever written'. A cong might have good lyrics but if the performer can not sing then does it still count? I dont think there could possibly be any contendors from the past 20 years or so. While there have been a fair few decent performers there are some classic songs from the 60s/70s/80s that cannot be beaten.

hmmmm..... there's so much good music in the world that this is really hard. GOOD Thread!!! :tu:I don't think that it's possible to decide on one song that is the best song ever written, but here are some of my faves!
Broken-Lindsey Haun off the broken bridges soundtrack you can listen to the complete song here :
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=207129333

I love almost anything to do with Carrie Underwood! um, next would have to be (this only applies to those of us who live in the U.S)
Angry American and American Soldier by Toby Keith, sadly, it's not on myspace, so i can't let you listen to it. uM, next would be Crashed, and Over you by Daughtry!!! you can listen to them both here:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendID=61489218

hmmm. I also LOVE Natalie Merchant's "Life is Sweet" "My skin" and "Thick as Thieves"!!! this is for the non-country or rock fans, it's easy listening and I LOVE it!!! You can listen here:

I'm sure I'm a tad biased, but "Hey Jude" by The Beatles, and "Butterflies and Hurricanes" by Muse. Those are the two that popped into my head right away.

"Hey Jude" - need I really say it?

"Butterflies and Hurricanes" - you just have to hear it to know why I picked it.

Anyways, I definitely don't know all the songs in the world, so I can't say for certain that those are the two best songs ever written. ;) But they are my two favourite, and they're my favourite for a reason.

ooooh, I love Hey Jude. Others:

-Tiny Vessels by DCFC has amazing lyrics, haunting guitar...I get shivers everytime I listen to it
-Wonderwall by Oasis (The beatles fans now hate me. But the beatles are awesome too!) never gets old
-Do You Hear the People Sing from Les Miserables. Any song from Les Mis, actually. They are so powerful!
-Hey There Delilah: I know most people hate it because it's overplayed, but WHO doesn't want their special person to write them a song like Hey There Delilah?
-Unchained Melody depending on who sings it. Same with a lot of the classics

There are a lot more. I'm glad no one has mentioned a Fergie song or anything :P

Excellent thread!

In my opinion, the best song ever is Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley. Leonard Cohen wrote the song, but Jeff completely made it his own. It’s heartbreaking and beautiful at the same time.

Other amazing songs:
Losing My Religion by R.E.M
Don't Stop Believing Journey

The Beatles can’t be left out. I think the honour goes to Let It Be, although my favourite is Here Comes the Sun.

Interestingly, Rolling Stone Magazine complied a list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time ( http://www.rollingstone.com/news/coverstory/500songs) in 2004. Their choice for number one: Like a Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan.

Someone mentioned Hallelujah, Jeff Buckley's version, and I have to agree. It has to be my favourite song. It's like a trembling arch over an expanse of water. It can make anyone feel in love, or just feel something, and it doesn't fade as soon as the song is over, it carries you through the day. Amazingly powerful.

Another great one that I listen to all the time is The One You Love by Rufus Wainwright. It's very evocative, love without added sugar but not exactly bitter. Not to mention Rufus's voice, which is mindblowing!

If I had to choose one song for the 90s, other than Hallelujah, I wouldn't go for the good but overplayed Smells Like Teen Spirit. I'd go for I Think I'm Paranoid from Garbage. It's It describes the way a lot of people felt back then, with images of glamour that were unattainable and a very subtle tranformation of grunge into a new wave of punk in the underground. This is not a song, it's an anthem, and it's a pity it doesn't get the airplay it deserves anymore.

Its very hard to pick a fav. song, especially cuz I have a new fav. song every other day, but I'm going to say, anything written by Rob Thomas. I think he's just amazing. He's had lots of co-writers though. He wrote 'Disease' with a guy from Rolling Stones, can't remember his name though. And the Santana song 'Smooth', was written and preformed by non other than Rob Thomas. Has anyone heard the new song 'How Far We've Come'? It's really good, and the music video is very political, and good. I love it!

But I like a lot of other stuff too. Someone said 'Imagine' by John Lennon, and I would have to agree. It's a really inspiring song. Pretty much all the Beatles songs are good like that.

You know, I think that this is really more complicated then just putting down songs and saying why you like them. My favorite song would probably be something in the punk rock genre, blink 182 or green day. But I wouldn't dare say it's the best song ever written. There are so many songs that came out of the late mid 1900s that were just amazing. You have the Beatles, Queen, and many other bands that played then and just revolutionized music. But then what about really old things, like Mozart and Beethoven. Those are complete masterpieces, defiinately worthy of an all time award.

But, contrary to all I just said, I'll follow the trend and list my favorite as "the best ever" Ironic, yes? ;)

I didn't know that's who you were named after, Joni!! Is her name pronounced the same as yours is?? I always thought it wasn't...

Anyway, as for the best song ever... well, there's so many I love, it's too hard to pick just one, but I'll try and narrow it down. One of the best ever in my opinion, just for the obscure awesomeness of it would have to be Safety Dance. Other than that, something by the Clash, for sure, English Civil War is one of their best in my opinon. There's also Back on the Chain Gang by the Pretenders, and Just Like Heaven by the Cure. Or Hungry Like the Wolf by Duran Duran, and 11:59 by Blondie. Umm.... right, so, see why this is so difficult for me??? And looking at that, I have some weird music taste.

By "song" do you mean "popular song" i.e. any form of non-formal music so including folk, pop, rock, blues, jazz etc or "piece of music".

Because if you mean "piece of music" I haven't got a clue, there is too much.

But if you mean "song" then I would say Hurt by Trent Reznor. The Johnny Cash cover of it is almost as good, but I prefer the original.

1. Like A Rolling Stone (Bob Dylan)

3. Imagine (John Lennon)

Definitely agree with that one. I adore playing it on the piano, and no matter how simple it may be, it's incredibly beautiful. I think it says a lot when a song can do so much with so few notes.

And I love your signature, by the way!

Thanks. I also adore Imagine's stripped-down simplicity. Alot of the times overproduction can stilt a song's truth and emotion and Lennon avoided that with the simple arrangment.

By "greatest songs ever written" do you mean favorite? I have some favorites but I would by no means say they are the greatest songs ever written.

My two favorites are "Walkin' on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves and
"Come on Eileen" by Dexes Midnight Runners. They are fun pick me up songs and I just can't stay in a bad mood when I hear them.

I think one of the greatest songs....I'll just go within my lifetime....

Hmmm... Dazed and Confused live by Led Zeppelin on How the West was Won may be one of the most amazing things I have ever heard. Jimmy Page playing an improvisational solo in the span of 15-17 minutes shows how much of a guitar god he is, although I may be a little bit biased

There are several great songs and not just one though I dare say classic wins there on a long run. Just because they are loved since centuries and are still timeless, unbeatable.

Ode to Joy by Beethoven.
Lots and lots of stuff by Mozart, Bach, Wagner etc etc too.

Though "Music" or "Bohemian Rhapsody" aren't bad either. If somebody loves music, there never can be just one great song just like there is never just one emotion.

As far as music and how it is written and how the dynamics of the vocals build and soar...I would have to choose Miserere by Gregorio Allegri. It is just one beautiful piece of music that never fails to entrance me with the way the harmonies all work together and support each other without overpowering any one section. An a capella piece, and it is one of the best classical pieces ever, in my opinion.

hmm. this is a tough one. I know this isn't only one song but here's a list of some I think are the best songs:

Stairway to Heaven - Led Zeppelin
Back In Black - AC/DC
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Imagine - John Lennon
How To Save a Life - The Fray

Hurt - Johnny Cash

That's not written by Johnny though; he covered it from NIN, and I'd definitely put that on the top of my list, too (in the original version).

The Beautiful People by Marilyn Manson

Stripped by Depeche Mode

Homesick by The Cure

The Unforgiven by Metallica

Come As You Are by Nirvana

Welcome To The Machine by Pink Floyd

Something by The Beatles

Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loves Me by The Smiths

Running Up That Hill by Kate Bush

Jóga by Björk

I came on here a while ago and listed a bunch of songs, but never really decided on anything. Well recently my mom had to pick her 2 favorite songs for something or another at work, and she had a ton of difficulty picking just two. She finally decided on "River" by Joni Mitchell, and "Suite: Judy Blue Eyes" by Crosby, Stills & Nash. That got me thinking, and finally I remembered one that I know will always be my top song: "Into the West" by Annie Lennox.

Hallelujah, most definitely. Cohen's words are gorgeous and Jeff Buckley's version of it is fantastic. So very, very emotional and powerful, I love it.

My next choice would have to be Piano Man by Billy Joel. I love the words and the melody, and the simplicity of the song. It hasn't been fudged around with on computers, it's just the song. The same goes for Hallelujah. You can actually hear the singer singing, not a voice that has been greatly altered by technology. Which is good for someone like me who isn't a fan of most chart music.

Finally, I love Defying Gravity from the musical Wicked. I think it was written by Stephen Schwartz. To me it's the message in this song which is the most important thing, seen in this section of the song:

Something has changed within me
Something is not the same
I'm through with playing by
The rules of someone else's game
Too late for second-guessing
Too late to go back to sleep
It's time to trust my instincts
Close my eyes
And leap...

It's time to try defying gravity
I think I'll try defying gravity
And you can't pull me down

I find the words and music of it really, really uplifting.

I doubt that anyone will ever completely agree on the best song ever written, because there will always be a song that touches someone in a way that doesn't affect anyone else.

For me, I've always loved Green Day's Good Riddance (Time of Your Life) since the first time I've heard it, and for me it will always be my all-time favourite song. It's a song that really embodies the moment, that reminds you to enjoy everything cos it won't last forever.

I mean, there are so many songs out there deserving special praise, I wouldn't know where to begin naming them. But recently, I came across another one that really, REALLY impressed me, and I don't think it was mentioned here before, and it deserves mentioning, I believe -

Steven Sondheim's 'Epiphany'. Wow. Everything about this song, the changes of tempi, the complex line of reasoning in the lyrics complemented by the equally complex rhythm and melody, and I must say, Johnny Depp's delivery (I listened to professional singers performing the same piece, and I really liked Depp's best because he isn't a trained singer, which befits the song perfectly IMO) - fantastic. Eleven out of ten. :)

I don't know about the best ever written, but the first song that comes to mind for me is With or Without You by U2. I'm not a huge U2 fan, I only have two of their songs on my iPod, but I absolutely love this song. I go through phases where I listen to one song constantly, and eventually I get sick of it and find a new song. But no matter how many times I listen to With or Without You, I could always listen to it a million more. I think it portrays so much emotion, and it always manages to fit how I'm feeling perfectly.

A few others that come to mind are:

Hallelujah by Jeff Buckley
Yesterday by The Beatles
Hanging By a Moment by Lifehouse
You'll Be In My Heart by Phil Collins
I Hope You Dance by Lee Ann Womack

I love the song "Passenger Seat" by Death Cab for Cutie. In my opinion no other song can touch it. The song is simple and sweet and does not really impart any "life lessons" but it just focuses on love the way we see it. No roses blooming magically or hearts going on... Just life and therein lies its pure genius.

I roll the window down
and then begin to breathe in
the darkest country road
and the strong scent of evergreen
from the passenger seat as you are driving me home.

then looking upwards
I strain my eyes and try
to tell the difference between shooting stars and satellites
from the passenger seat as you are driving me home.

"do they collide?"
I ask and you smile.
with my feet on the dash
the world doesn't matter.

when you feel embarrassed then I'll be your pride
when you need directions then I'll be the guide
for all time.
for all time.

This is HARD. I listen to a lot of classical music, and it's really hard with that.

Classical: TOUGHTOUGHTOUGH. I have to say Jupiter from The Planets by Gustav Holst. Or Second Suite by Holst (Which is SO better than First Suite. Though First Suite rocks it, too). Holst was a genius. I mean, maybe not considered the best technically, but the music is so moving and beautiful. I also love Bach's Brandenburg Concerti.
Non-classical: Also tough, but here are some great songs:

The Peace, by Morning Musume. Best JPop song ever. And yes, I think it's better than LOVE Machine.

I don't think there is one best song ever written. Also, IMO it's unfair to compare different genres as many have different intentions with their art. Going through my iTunes list (which has over 20,000 songs) I'd say the best are Hurt by Nine Inch Nails, Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin and Karma Police by Radiohead. But then, I only have rock and variations of rock in my iTunes. No country, blues, jazz, rap, rnb, (mainstream) pop, soul etc so I'd say those are three of the best rock songs ever written rather than best ever of any genre- because I just don't know.

These are good points, but I think it probably goes without saying that none of us has actually heard all the songs that were ever written, so how do we know there's not a better song somewhere that we just haven't heard yet?

Perhaps the thread should more accurately be called "My favourite songs (of the ones I've heard so far)"?

I've just realised that most of the songs that immediately sprang to my mind when I saw this thread do not actually fit the bill as "best song ever written", because in almost all cases it's the way that the original artists performed them that make them so special - I can't imagine a cover version of any of them that wouldn't be total sacrilege, which kind of suggests that it's not the writing that's the main thing about them.

Hysteria
November 5th, 2009, 1:24 am
^ That's pretty much what I meant :) This thread should be titled 'my favourite songs' although, then my three above would be different because while I feel that musically they are the most effective in my playlist, there are others which provide more entertainment value- IMO.
Obviously people will disagree with others. The 2005 Rolling Stone list of the 100 best songs ever, I feel, is awful and completely disregards a vast majority of genres and could not possibly be the best ever because it doesn't even try to look at anything outside classic rock (besides a couple of Eminem songs).

The 2005 Rolling Stone list of the 100 best songs ever, I feel, is awful and completely disregards a vast majority of genres and could not possibly be the best ever because it doesn't even try to look at anything outside classic rock (besides a couple of Eminem songs).

I quite like the 100 Best Songs that the Daily Telegraph (awful, conservative British newspaper that my dad reads) ran earlier this year, even though it is virtually identical to the Rolling Stone list, largely because it didn't even pretend to be a definitive, objective list - they were totally open about the fact that it was just their critic's choice. It strikes me that both lists are very white, English-speaking, middle-aged, middle-class - not that there's anything wrong with that, but they can't claim to represent the whole world.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/culturecritics/neilmccormick/4978868/100-Greatest-Songs-of-All-Time.html

Some of my favourites (other than "Scrapbook" by Furniture and "Damage" by Sylvian/Fripp, which I think I already said), in no particular order:

Say a Little Prayer - Aretha Franklin
I Will Survive- Gloria Gaynor
Since I've Been Loving You - Led Zeppelin
Like A Rolling Stone - Bob Dylan
Song To the Siren - This Mortal Coil (but it's a cover, so bang goes the "best written" thing, again)
This House - Alison Moyet
Say Hello Wave Goodbye - Soft Cell
Ever Fallen in Love With Someone You Shouldn't Have - The Buzzcocks (has been covered brilliantly by loads of people, which suggests the songwriting is good)
Heart - Pet Shop Boys (although I feel I should really have chosen "Rent", as again it's been brilliantly covered by loads of people)
Song of Solomon - Kate Bush (but, again, possibly not her best written song, I just love what Trio Bulgarka are doing in the background)
Too much of the English/Scottish/Irish folk canon to mention
Too many jazz and show standards to mention

But this all absolutely screams my age (sorry for missing out the last 20 years), ethnicity and nationality and is totally meaningless, as on another day I could choose completely different songs. And I've ended up completely excluding loads of artists/genres I love, because instrumental music, dance music and a lot of world music doesn't seem to fit under the word "song". This really does just focus on the bog standard 3 minute pop song

^ That's a very good point, I hadn't thought of that. I guess publications like Rolling Stone are going to pick the 100 best songs that will appeal to their demographic which is likely to be slightly older, English speaking, white (for the most part) music lovers. I guess it's far too subjective to create an entirely unbiased list.

The first one that came to mind was "Orange County Suite" by the Doors. That, or the jazz version of "Queen of the Highway." Both of them give me the chills.

Also, add to my list "Island of Souls" by Sting - fabulous, Newcastle folk-influenced melody and heartbreaking, politicised lyrics.

I personally think Pink Floyd's "Sorrow" is a fantastic song. The song is well written with deep, meaningful lyrics.

Gosh, I think choosing a 'best' song would need a majority vote from a lot of people to be valid. Still, these are the songs I would pick, mostly because these are the songs that, for me at least, never get old, no matter how many times I listen to them.

Dave Matthews Band - Crash Into Me
Johnny Clegg & Savuka - The Crossing

Kim Walker - How He Loves Us
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoC1ec-lYps

I included the Youtube links because I'm sure most folks wouldn't be familiar with those two songs.

many many years ago, I used to think Halo, by Depeche Mode, included in their album Violator, was the best song ever. It was the song I would have taken to a desert island if I could only bring one! I love the melodic line and harmony. Don't really understand the lyrics much.
Depeche Mode - Halo (demo) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cDdzX7-odoU)
It's pretty similar to the album version

Nowadays, I only listen to classical music, so I can't really pick a "song" as best song ever.

I think the best song ever written would be "You Belong With Me" by Taylor Swift. I absolutely love it!

No one can convince me that Stairway To Heaven by Led Zeppelin is not the greatest song ever written.

Among modern songs (defined as brief musical entities that also have sung lyrics, and omitting Enya because her inclusion is unfair), I considered it a three-way tie between Bohemian Rhapsody, Stairway to Heaven, and Scenes from an Italian Restaurant for many years. As of last month, however, Octavarium by Dream Theater has replaced all three. Its sheer depth of structure and use of music theory + mathematical beauty is truly mind-blowing, especially when taken in context within its album. Link that just scratches the surface: http://dt.spatang.com/octavarium.php

I still don't think any of these approaches an average work from the Baroque or Romantic periods, though, or some other modern music (most John Williams soundtracks, any given work by Enya, some Nobuo Uematsu works, etc.)

On a major Billy Joel kick right now. I feel like covering my face in shame for not including about 10 of his songs on my list for best songs written (my criteria for which focuses on lyrics, message, and musicality). I feel almost ridiculous calling Billy Joel underrated because he's got a huge musical legacy and is in various Hall of Fames and such, but dangit I think he's underrated by us commoners.

For Good: Wicked

Woah, I didn't even think about Wicked. *gasp* How strange for me to never think about Wicked......I'm always thinking about Wicked.

Defying Gravity and Popular are quite amazing, as far as 'best songs' go.

Clearly the award for best song ever written should go to Rebecca Black's 'Friday'. With lyrics like 'Gotta get my bowl/Gotta get cereal', I mean, that stuff speaks to a generation. Deep.

Hey, Soul Sister by Train has been my favorite since it first debuted. It's simple, but sweet.

Not Alone by Darren Criss (not the AVPM version, his original) It speaks volumes to those of us who often find ourselves lonely.

I have mentioned this song sooooo many times on this forum and I probably really annoy some people because I won't shut up about it....

After searching this thread and finding that no one had brought it up (at least I think, maybe I didn't search properly :hmm:) I was kind of taken aback.

Now, I do not really believe in the existence of a "perfect song" because I can think of at least 40 songs right now that I really love but I would never call perfect. Except for the one I am about to mention.

Nothing Else Matters by Metallica.

I have never heard a more perfect song. Ever. In my whole life. I listen to it every day, and I have yet to find something wrong with it, something that I would change. Everything is just pulled off perfectly, and the title of "Best song ever written" or "perfect song" for me, goes to Nothing Else Matters and no other song can get in the way of that.

In my opinion the best song ever written is Into The New World by Girls' Generation. The lyrics are just ingenious - not just a typical love song, but something more. Check the lyrics from here (http://snsdlyrics.wordpress.com/2010/04/03/into-the-new-world/).

Number one has got to be "O Children" - Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds. What an umbelievable song. And GREENSLEEVES!!!

Also:
"Imagine" - John Lennon
"Dance While the Sky Crashes Down" - Jason Webley (check it out! Very few people have heard of it, and it's AMAZING)
"With or Without You" - U2
"Time" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" - Pink Floyd
"Into The West" - Enya
"Like A Rolling Stone" - Bob Dylan
"What A Wonderful World" - Louis Armstrong
"Paint it Black" - Rolling Stones
"Life On Mars" - David Bowie
"Father Of Mine" - Tom Felton (I was bawling at the end of this song. So simple, yet touching. Check. It. Out.)
"Bohemian Rhapsody" - Queen
"This Is Everything", "Welcome Home", "Like O like H" and "Dark Come Soon" - Tegan and Sara
"No Bravery" - James Blunt (practically every James Blunt song is amazing)
"House Of The Rising Sun" - Animals

There are more, but too many for one post...

I can never pick but right now my favourite song is Through the dark by Alexi Murdoch and basically anything by Bob Dylan is right up there in the list. Oh and Here comes the Sun by the Beatles... anything by the Beatles actually brightens up my mood :)

Imagine by John Lennon... Excellent.

I second this.

I was about to list Imagine as well as What If by Emilie Autumn

"What if I'm a snowstorm burning; What if I'm a world unturning?
What if I'm an ocean, far too shallow, much too deep?
What if I'm the kindest demon, something you may not believe in?
What if I'm a siren singing gentlemen to sleep?"

With lyrics that contradictory, yet somehow complimentary, well, I just have to like it, especially given that I did a similar thing with the username I often use: MortalEternity.

She has pretty much stopped preforming that song, but she preformed it on the last tour for the shows that sold out... AND OURS WASN'T ONE OF THEM.

It's impossible to just name one song as the best song ever. There are so many great songs. And there's still so many I haven't even heard yet!

Anyway, these are just a few of the songs that I think belong in the top songs of all times:

- It's Alright, Ma (I'm Only Bleeding) by Bob Dylan
- Paint it Black by The Rolling Stones
- If You Belonged to Me by The Traveling Wilburys
- Cornerstone by The Arctic Monkeys
- Eleanor Rigby by The Beatles
- These Days by Bon Jovi
- One Headlight by The Wallflowers

and:

Oh, also Hallellujah by Leonard Cohen!!! How could I forget about that song?

So many songs to choose from...So many that are rich in lyric, poignant and powerful...

Hard to choose just one, but a few that come to mind are:

Nothing Ever Happens - Del Amitri
Imagine - John Lennon
Masters of War - Bob Dylan
Affirmation - Savage Garden
What A Wonderful World - Louis Armstrong
Stand By Me - Ben E. King

Good point, that's an amazing song.
I think in terms of writing, no one really beats Dylan anyway. There are so many of his songs that are not only still relevant, but also still funny, touching and unparalleled.
