I've played guy parts before, only becuase it was due to a shortage of men...I don't think it's a huge deal though, I'd go ahead if that's what you feel you should do. :)

I thought it went well, I think I might have paced about a bit too much, but I guess that's better than staying rooted to the spot! I have to wait until May to find out if I was successful though. :( Did anyone else in the UK audition for NYT this week? potterposse February 18th, 2008, 2:50 pm Sorry if I sound dumb...what is NYT? (Well, I hope you did good! *Wishes you luck.* :D) I really want to audition for something, but I can't find new information on it! Its annoying me...I think the closet audition place is NY, but I doubt my parents would let me go (if they are still being held)...:sigh: LinnendeBlack February 18th, 2008, 7:22 pm NYT is a thing we have in the UK called the National Youth Theatre. It's quite famous, loads of now-famous actors started out in NYT, Daniel Craig being one of them! potterposse February 18th, 2008, 9:37 pm COOL! I wish you more luck! That's awesome! :D snowbluesky February 20th, 2008, 1:21 pm I do a little acting in school. I've been in Theatre class for four years, and I just got finished directing a play I co-wrote. First one in our school! potterposse February 26th, 2008, 2:18 pm Cool! congrats! :D My friend is in photography class, and she's really good so I asked her to do a headshot photo. I hope it came out good. I desperately need one. :p snowbluesky February 26th, 2008, 10:16 pm Hey all my fellow thespians! I tried to start this as a thread, but I'm going to ask my question here I guess. My school is just starting to do A Midsummer Night's Dream. My character is Helena. However, the guy set to play Demetrius is possibly the most annoying little twit on the face of the earth. (Plus he's only 4 feet tall, I'm 6 feet!). I don't know if I will be able to demean myself enough to follow him around the entire play. I feel almost insulted by my directors (I've been working with them for 4 years) that they would do this to me, especially when it's the last play I get to do with them. Any advice, anyone? LinnendeBlack February 26th, 2008, 10:44 pm You'll just have to get on with it I'm afraid. :( We've all had to work with people we don't particularly like very much. It's horrible I know but you'll just have to do it! snowbluesky February 27th, 2008, 12:13 am I know. I know I should be professional and all, I just really can't stand the guy, and to act like I have to be completely head over heels for him... *sigh* Lisa_Turpin February 27th, 2008, 12:44 am That's why it's called acting. Picture someone else that you would act head over heels for and project those feelings onto the other character and the situation. It's not the guy you are on stage with, it's Demetrius. You got a lead role, which is quite an honor, and it would really let the cast, crew, and directors down if you were to back out of the role based on one person. The show must go on! snowbluesky February 27th, 2008, 2:31 am :) Thanks for the encouragement, guys. Expelliarmus74 February 27th, 2008, 10:47 pm Hi! Acting is my passion but I really want to act in England (I'm Australian) and I was interested to hear about the NYT! Is that a really good place? What other places are there perhaps in and around London?? For some reason whenever I think about "making it" or anything I feel like England is the place to be! I love the BBC! skrewtmaster February 29th, 2008, 3:33 pm Hi! Acting is my passion but I really want to act in England (I'm Australian) and I was interested to hear about the NYT! Is that a really good place? What other places are there perhaps in and around London?? For some reason whenever I think about "making it" or anything I feel like England is the place to be! I love the BBC! NYT is like the best place to get into if you really want to be spotted in a youth theatre group, especially if you are based in London and can afford to get to all the workshops. England is overrun with youth theatres, theatre schools, and amateur dramatic societies, so people can pick and choose which groups to join because all are different. For example, here in Cornwall we have organisations that specialise in musiclas, some in classics, others in panto. There's just so much choice! Bookies9 March 1st, 2008, 11:50 am I'm just posting an interesting anecdote at my drama lessons at school, as I think they are incredibly original and interesting, and if any of you run drama groups, this could be an idea. We're currently doing a topic about 'Harrington Grange', a posh hotel. We're sorted into family groups, and we do some work leading up to leaving for the hotel. We recieve our 'keys', and do a series of still images, small sketches showing our character traits, and spoken thoughts. Now, this is where it gets interesting. We were all told to lie down, and all the lights were turned off, leaving us in darkness. We were instructed to keep our eyes shut, and listen. Our teacher told us what sounds we could hear, and what we could smell. Then she began walking up and down for almost five minutes, and we were beginning to get bored. Then suddenly she let out an incredibly bone-chilling scream. Also, yesterday we had another drama lesson. The scream was explained away by a maid screaming in her sleep, and we had a chance to play the part of staff spreading rumours to the guests. Then, in our family groups, we were told to show a small sketch showing our preparations for the night ahead, as not all of us were convinced that it was really a maid that screamed. Every time a group finished their sketch, the stage lights were turned down a notch, and by the time it came to the final group, we could barely see. The stage lights were turned off, and we were instructed to lie down again. There was a horrible creaking of the door, and we heard footsteps. Me and my 'daughter' turned round and started to scream our heads off. There was a horrible figure in a long black cloak, with a completely white face with no expression or features. We knew it was really our drama teacher, but I guess we stayed in character. My 'daughter' even clung onto me and said "Mum, I'm scared!" I just had to come on here and rave about it to people. :) I love drama. LinnendeBlack March 1st, 2008, 12:57 pm Hi! Yes, England is certainly the best place. The best drama schools in the world are here, and the best actors in the world have in fact been English! We take our acting very seriously over here! (I think it's because of Shakespeare really!) The NYT is a good place to start out that's why I'm hoping to get in. Unfortunately the auditions for this year ended last week so you won't be able to audition for it again until next february (which is what I'm going to do if I don't get in this year!), you can audition right up until you're 21 as well. You can apply for an audition from around october every year and the auditions take place usually in the middle of february in various centres across the country (I went to Manchester for mine). Here's the website! www.nyt.org.uk :) Argyle March 2nd, 2008, 12:31 am Cool thread. I have done a bit of acting. Mostly local small stuff. But I did a few roles at my college. Some of the plays I have been in are: Antigone, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Davy & Stu, Romeo & Juliet, and a couple short one acts: Lonely Impulse of Delight, Telephone, and a few other's I can't think of off the top of my head. I enjoy acting, but never wanted to do it for a living. I wouldn't mind doing it for a living, but a lot of my close friends are very serious about it & I think I am somewhat rubbish, but I've been told different. DancingMaenid March 2nd, 2008, 6:29 am I really liked acting the times I've done it, but haven't done very much. It's something I think would be nice to try more of, but I'm a little concerned about memorizing lines. I didn't have much trouble in the past when I've acted, but admittedly, nothing I've done has involved that many lines, all things considered. I'm a little scared I'd screw up if I ever tried to do anything more serious. Any input on that? aliauthor March 8th, 2008, 5:31 pm I really liked acting the times I've done it, but haven't done very much. For memorization, I record my cues on a tape/garageband and then listen to them/put them on my iPod. It really helps me. Also, be sure you're going over your lines with someone when you practice, not just alone, so they can read the other parts and be on book for you! aliauthor March 8th, 2008, 5:39 pm that is so cool. If I ever become a drama teacher... not_a_human March 11th, 2008, 1:11 am Hey guys! I havn't been here for awhile - not since the school's one-acts ended. Now it's time for the musical! After a bit of a break, we are starting auditions tomorrow for our spring musical. It was nice to have a break, schedules are always so busy when you're doing a play. But it will be nice to get back to it. I'm really nervous though, I've never done a musical before - in the 3 years that I've been in drama, my first year I didn't even know about the musical and my second year we didn't do one. And I can't sing! I'm a little encouraged by the fact that we did a musical workshop in the fall and my voice was apparantly not that bad, but now all the choir members are trying out! Grr. The musical is "Funny Girl" (yes, Barbara Streisand). Not the best music in the world in my opinion, but I will try it out anyway. I wish we could've done "Little Shop of Horrors", which I am absolutely in love with, but unfortunately our school performed that two years ago (when I didn't know about it!) About half of the people auditioning are wishing that we could've done "Sweeny Todd", but I highly doubt the teachers would even consider that. Anyway, any opinions on the process of auditioning for a musical? I know what we are going to do to cast it, but any advice would be appreciated.:tu: skrewtmaster April 10th, 2008, 2:00 pm Hey guys! If you know kind of what will be going on in the audition process you've already got a head start! Just go in ready to sing dance and act and treat it as a performance. PureBloodGirl May 7th, 2008, 3:54 am Oh my gosh, no one on this planet knows how much I want to be an actress. I'm going to this thing at CoD this summer called Actor's Clinic and it's supposed to help you get used to being on stage and acting. I'm very good at memerizing things, I have an overactive imagination, am a movie freak, and very set and positive that this will work out. I don't want to go broadway or anything, but I want to be in movies and tv shows. I think it would be the time of my life it happened. PureBloodGirl May 21st, 2008, 2:33 am I am really getting into acting right now. I'm not in drama because I'm homeschooled, but once I go to a regular school I'm joining Drama right away. Expelliarmus74 June 6th, 2008, 3:27 am Hello! This question is directed at anyone who knows/will answer! I want to get into RADA....hopefully... eventually.....has anyone here auditioned for it or is a student there or knows quite a bit about it and the level of difficulty there is in getting in? Like has it got a reputation for being a real practically impossible place to get into? Does anyone know what the audition is like? I'd really appreciate it! skrewtmaster June 6th, 2008, 12:06 pm Hello! This question is directed at anyone who knows/will answer! I can tell you that as it is one of the best drama schools EVER I would imagine that it's not exactly a walk in the park. I've already been looking around for drama schools even though I have to go through college and uni first! I've been told that RADA will only take people that they think are really 100% committed to acting. People have also said to me that they wished they had waited until their early twenties to attend drama school because they felt they would have done better. I think that there is a sort of interview to see how well they think you'd do but I can't tell you any more I'm afraid, damn my lack of life experience! Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question! :D I'm from Australia so there's only so much information I can get over the internet about it lol! But since the English are the world's best actors IMO! I felt that RADA would be the best place to go to! And yes I had a feeling about it and I think it's smarter to get a bit of life experience first wait and until your early twenties that's the proper way to go about it! Committment isn't a problem I'm willing to move countries just for the opportunity to audition lol! I'm saving and doing lots of other stuff to put myself in position to do it like getting an Irish/European passport (thankgod my dad is Irish!) Also you mentioned an interview I read on their site that there's the initial audition which is two monologues then a callback where you perform them again and a unaccompanied song and then from THERE it's a workshop. Is there also an interview at some point or do you think they conduct it at the beginning? And also hope you don't mind me asking but howcome you have to go to uni first??? skrewtmaster June 10th, 2008, 4:35 pm Thanks so much for taking the time to answer my question! :D I'm from Australia so there's only so much information I can get over the internet about it lol! As I said, I'm not sue there is an interview, but when I went for my college interview, I was told that they ask you questions like "If you didn't get in this year what would you do?" just to see if you really are dedicated; so the ones who said they'd try again next year would be more likely to get a place. I might be going to uni, mainly because of my parents. They've been trying to detter me from acting since I was about ten! They think that if I get a degree then I could do teaching or something if I don't reach my dream but I've told them that I'd rather go to work for a couple of years, get some income then go onto drama school. But I'm not at that stage yet so I guess I'll just cross that bridge when I come to it! Expelliarmus74 June 11th, 2008, 8:12 am So they ask questions to test you...interesting....sort of like answer me these questions three and I shall let you pass lol! I'll definately keep that in mind! Thanks!:tu: Miss_Lovegood June 19th, 2008, 10:27 pm I didn't realise there was an actors thread on here. OMG!!! My name is Rachael Wearing. I am also training in circus skills such as juggling and spinning plates. I am the "go to" girl at drama school for information on the legends Rogers and Hammerstein - so if you need help on these innovators fire away. I know a lot about them. I am a Soprano Musical Theatre Singer my vocal range extends from a bottom F#(sharp) to a top Bb (flat). I am aiming for a three octave vocal range and if possible more. I am also training as a Mezzo Soprano Opera Singer. Sorry this sounds sssssssssooooooooo bigheaded I know, but I don't always find threads where I can speak with other budding actors. If anyone needs any information or I can help them with anything then I would be happy to help because you just spent half an hour of you time reading this. Expelliarmus74 June 20th, 2008, 1:07 pm Yes I have a question: What is an equity card!? Someone mentioned it to me the other day and I have never heard of it! I'm in my eeeeearly stages of acting just finished school BUT I did drama for four years at school. Also Miss Lovegood, what drama school are you doing your degree? I plan on auditioning for RADA, do you know anything about it? PureBloodGirl June 23rd, 2008, 7:16 pm I'm getting into acting even more than before now! I went to my first acting class today and it was so much fun and I learned a lot! potterposse June 23rd, 2008, 9:41 pm COOL!:D hope it goes well for you! Miss Lovegood, you don't sound bigheaded...you have a pretty good resume going on! :D I definitely need to build mine up, it's pretty sad. Expelliarmus, An equity is the SAG card in theatre to sum it up. :) I have a question about agents if anyone can answe this: Can you have an agent in a dfifferent area as you...a state in my case? I was looking for Franchised agencies and there aren't any in my state -_-. rose_weasley621 July 20th, 2008, 1:48 am I've been in mostly live theatre, but I've been in a few commercials. One was for charter and aired in LA. PureBloodGirl July 21st, 2008, 1:28 am I'd like to let everyone know that there is an actor's group in the social groups if anyone wants to join. potterposse July 21st, 2008, 12:50 pm YAY! thanks. :D Commercials really? :D Would you like to tell which one or no? :D PureBloodGirl September 15th, 2008, 3:10 am I've been in mostly live theatre, but I've been in a few commercials. One was for charter and aired in LA. That's pretty cool. You wanna put them up on youtube and show us? not_a_human September 17th, 2008, 5:47 pm Hey, everybody! I'm so excited to be getting back to acting after summer vacation. I've just spent the last two nights auditioning for my college's fall production, "The Heiress", and I found out this morning that I got the part of the maid. I'm not too disappointed, because the director said that the maid is in and out alot, and there are only nine characters anyway, so I'm glad just to be in it. I made a resume for the audition, and it's pretty small:grumble: - Miss_Lovegood, yours looks so much better! "The Heiress" sounds very cool, I havn't had a chance to read the whole script yet, but I do know that the film version with Olivia de Haviland won 4 Oscars. So, anyway, glad to be back at it, even though I still sort of miss high school I can't wait to get to know some new people. not_a_human November 10th, 2008, 1:22 am Friday was the opening night for "The Heiress." It went really well, except for a drink spill that I had to clean up, but I'm the maid, so it worked! Anyway, I'm not doing the next show, which is "The Sound of Music", so it'll be nice to take a break and to actually watch a show for once. Happy Acting! PureBloodGirl November 10th, 2008, 2:10 am Glad to hear it went well, Not A Human! :tu: I'm thinking about auditioning for the two Winter plays that will be playing at our community center (or was it the park district). I forgot what the names of the plays are, but they are supposed to be kind of like comedys or spoofs on other plays. potterposse November 22nd, 2008, 7:51 pm awesome not a human. :D and yes Happy Acting!:tu: GAH! I'm practically out of school and do my english course at home, and when I leave they decide to do an open call for Grease! :wow: -_-...I probably shouldn't be sulky about it, I'm not the best singer and I can't dance if my life depended on it.:p But still they now decide to let the whole school try out for stuff. not_a_human December 5th, 2008, 6:44 pm I'm so glad that the Heiress is over. It was fun and everything, but with that and all my classes I was so stressed out! Anyway, I wish I was good at singing and dancing so I could do musicals:grumble: Oh well, we can't have everything! :p PureBloodGirl December 5th, 2008, 9:46 pm If you want to do a musical so bad then practice singing and dancing. Practice makes perfect. GreekGeek July 30th, 2009, 7:03 pm ACTING IS MY LIFE. Well, I'm not doing anything besides church and school stuff, because of my parents not approving of spending money on classes, but I am seriously in LOVE with it!! I know for a fact that acting is what I'm going to be doing for the rest of my life. I love it soo much! Just the thought of abandoning yourself to take on another persona gives me excited chills! I'm seriously a theatre geek, I've probably read all the books on theatre there are out there! It's sooo much fun! I'm more of a dramatic actress though. I can do comedy and throughly enjoy it, but I get the highest high from doing dramatic acting, such as shakespeare or really emotionally riveting things. I wish I could do some films, I've done a few commericals, but I honestly have no clue how to act on screen. I need to take some classes on acting on film, but we come back to the original problem. I'm young though and content with going through the school drama program, majoring in theatre in college, perhaps going to a drama school after that, and seeing what happens then. After all, rarely child stars make it to stardom in adulthood, and then the business wants fresh faces for the movies. nina__ January 4th, 2010, 2:16 pm Yay, I just found out I'm going to be Paris from Romeo and Juliet this upcoming summer. This is going to be a challenge for me, my drama teacher usually gives me the most girlish, *****y roles, and now I'll have to be a convincing man, oh ****. But I'm excited and willing to take on that challenge, especially since I'm the only teenager in a professional cast. MC2456 January 27th, 2010, 5:00 pm I haven't done much besides church and school stuff, but I really do enjoy acting. I never liked it much before, but after my most recent play, I'm hooked! I hope I would get into theatre one day. YellowBrickRoad January 27th, 2010, 8:43 pm I love to act. I think I am fairly good. I have taken a class at an actors guild in my community. I've auditioned at my school, but the teacher had favorites, and I never got a part, because they all got parts. Stupid favoritism's that teachers have. I want to do some community theater, but I have no transportation to get there. tragicomedy_ June 11th, 2010, 4:43 pm 8D Oh God, yay! THESPIANS. I'm fairly new to the theatre world, but I'm addicted for sure. I've been in three of my school's plays, two of which were One-Act Festivals and the other being "A Midsummer Night's Dream". The funny thing about that was that my director had to re-write the entire script; we had four guys. So I ended up playing the female counterpart of Bottom, and it was the best part of my young life. xD madders94 July 7th, 2010, 7:47 pm Acting! Oh I think I've found my home on CoS ;) I love acting :) Just finished a youth theatre revue that we've been practicing for weeks - it was meant to be done back in April, but it had to be postponed because I ended up on crutches the week before the show  And last month we did a show in three venues, a play called "Raising The Roof". I had to play Rose, the "thick but attractive" maid who falls for the vicar's famous actor brother. First ever kissing scenes... and under the table scenes... and other innuendo scenes. Wouldn't have been to bad if the guy playing the actor brother wasn't one of my best friends, who is 10 years older than me and the closest thing to a big brother I have :grumble:  we had a laugh. Not long now until panto season! (Oh yes it is ;) ) |
