Jessica September 13th, 2007, 11:31 pm Official Admin Sponsor(s): Ali & Kizz
This thread is for discussions on anything to do with the forums barring more specific issues related to technical problems.
You may also notice at the top of each forum is the official Admin Sponsor(s). Basically when an Administrator replies to this thread he or she will write in bold red Official Response on [subject]. For example, a person may ask about a particular problem with their Owls on CoS, so an admin would respond in such a manner:

The official response will only ever be superceeded by an updated response to the original. You may however see other official responses but concerning different topics. Redundant responses will be deleted in place of new ones. A tally of our responses will be kept in a staff area.
Once an official response has been made it is the end of the matter and any further attempts to continue the discussion will be met with post deletion.
Staff members may of course reply to people until an official response is made by an Admin.
You should be aware that questions in this area may take longer to be answered than in other areas as a lot of us don't actually know the answer and so you often need to wait for Ali or Kizz to answer more technical questions.
Thank you.
unconvinced September 14th, 2007, 11:06 pm For some reason the search function doesn't seem to be working for me, when every I put what I want to search into the the box and hit the button it just refreshes the page. Any ideas why that might be happening?
Jessica September 14th, 2007, 11:09 pm That's what it does when it doesn't find any matches. Try something you know is there and see if that works.
adam_12 September 15th, 2007, 4:34 am Or if what you're searching for isn't long enough, that might be happening. I think it won't accept it if you're searching for one four-letter word or something like that.
silver ink pot September 16th, 2007, 3:02 pm I'm suddenly not receiving e-mail notifications of my subscriptions, and I can't figure out why.
My profile seems to be set up correctly, and I've always gotten them in the past. I'm also receiving other e-mails, so I'm a little puzzled. When I look at my subscriptions, under "Notification" it says "Instant."
If it's any help, I had two Owls the other day, and wasn't notified of those either until I visited CoS. I haven't changed my e-mail address at all, so it's a mystery.
Thanks in advance for looking into that. :)

I think it's 3 characters or less, I know because I tried searching for a U2 thread before and although I knew it was there it wasn't returned!

Hmmm that is strange, I'd be interested in hearing if anyone else is having these issues. Not that I can think of a reason why it should happen but have the notifications gone to spam?
silver ink pot September 16th, 2007, 4:28 pm Liselle: My Spam folder is empty, and nothing from CoS has ever gone in there before.
I'm going to check my e-mail settings just in case, but I can't imagine how those would have been changed. I'm on AOL.

Thanks ~ but for instance, I got your Owl, but not an e-mail telling me it was there. And it didn't go into my Spam folder either.
And I've been testing other places that usually send me notifications and all that is working fine. This is a mystery.

E-mail address so I can unblock the address. posted in Ask the Staff a few days ago?
8m57w6 September 16th, 2007, 6:46 pm I've got an issue where when I choose the "Mark Forum Read" option, it doesn't alwyas respond. However it's only in some areas. If I do it in Flourish and Blotts, or Magical Masterpieces, it works fine right away, but in the Quidditch Pitch, or some of the DH areas, I have to do it 4 or 5 times, and sometimes it won't go at all. Is this an issue on my end, or is it just because those places get updated so quickly?? Not really a big problem ,just something I've been wondering about.
ignisia September 16th, 2007, 9:27 pm Hi, I've been having the same problem as SIP. In fact, it's been going on for me ever since DH was released. Do you think it's the email provider? Because I have AOL too, so maybe something's gone on with AOL screennames.
The odd thing is, prior to the release of DH, I could get the emails for thread updates easily. But now, zip, nada. Not even in the spam folder, I've checked.

I'm not one of the technical admins, but some threads move fast enough that there will be new posts between when you hit the button and when you look again. So I think it's the updating is going so quickly :).

Hello!
I am looking into this one :)
Ali September 16th, 2007, 10:37 pm ignisia and silver ink pot... I think it's an AOL issue. They tend to block out all forum(in particular vbulletin) emails. It might be good enough of an excuse to change your emails to a non aol account, as AOL sucks. majorly. ;)
8m57w6 September 16th, 2007, 10:40 pm Do you have any idea how much that reminds me of my brother?? AOL sucks was his motto for a while.
Anyway, thanks for the help chparadise!!

I don't quite understand what you mean - I've had AOL the whole time I've been here and this has never happened. I checked my SPAM list and Cosforums is not blocked, and I never had any reason to block it. This happened all of a sudden around the exact end of August, near as I can tell, because it's been about two weeks since I've been notified of an Owl.
Nothing changed on my part, and I'm on a brand new computer that has been working fine with AOL, and I get notifications from Harry Potter Network and Livejournal too. Hmmmm. :grumble:
Liselle September 17th, 2007, 8:58 am Livejournal is not a vBulletin forum though, I'm not sure about HPN as I'm not a member there ~ so you would get Livejournal updates.
From what I've understood from Ali we've not changed anything on our side and from what you're saying you've not changed anything your side which would make me believe it's your ISP.

Graduand_Esk September 22nd, 2007, 1:11 am This may just be a problem with my computer, but I thought I'd flag it up anyway. One of the posts I submitted yesterday has completely disappeared from the thread it was in, but I haven't received any owls about it so I can't work out what might have happened. Help!
Kimagine September 22nd, 2007, 1:21 am I don't know what would cause this, and it will probably be some Very Obvious Thing To Figure Out Myself, but here goes... I was looking at some of my threads and wanted to update them. Problem is, there was no way to do this, because, despite the fact that I was signed in and all (I accessed the thread through my subscriptions), it said I could not reply, could not post, all that good stuff. There was not even a field to do it. But the thread was not locked. Mysterious...
8m57w6 September 22nd, 2007, 2:03 am Which forum was it in?? Because in some, like The Daily Prophet, and non-Feedback threads in F&B, only the person who created the thread, or a mod can reply in it. That's the only thing I can think of. If it was somewhere besides that, I'm out.
Chris September 22nd, 2007, 2:06 am Some threads are now read-only in the archives. It's possible that the thread in question was one of those threads.
Regarding the issue in post 23, I'm not that technically inclined, so I'm not the one to help here, sorry :).
Graduand_Esk September 22nd, 2007, 2:08 am The post was submitted to Legilimency Studies in The Stone at about 6pm yesterday. I'm pretty sure I saw the finished post as part of the thread once I'd typed it, but I looked again this morning and it was gone. Mysterious...

One of your posts was deleted by staff. You can owl any member of staff to ask why, I'd rather not discuss private matters in a public area.

Make sure you don't have the "disable smilies in text" option checked. As for the smily box, I'm not really sure what would cause that not to show up, unless you have a pop-up blocker that might be preventing it from showing up when you hit the "more" link.
Kimagine September 23rd, 2007, 4:29 am Some threads are now read-only in the archives. It's possible that the thread in question was one of those threads.

Don't complain! At least your thread's still there for you and other people to read. One of mine - my most successful one too! - got deleted, I can't even go back and read the good parts. :grumble:
The subject did get picked up again, but it's not the same thing. :(

I think that you will find that everyone gets threads deleted now and then the Mods here are very good at keeping the Boards from getting cluttered up with duplicate threads . Sometimes in the past when there was a book release the mods pruned the boards to keep the server from bogging down .
I hope that helped ?

Alastor September 23rd, 2007, 3:26 pm Maybe it's time to get back on topic now.

You might also be posting in Quick Reply, rather than the Advanced Post.
Muggle_Magic September 23rd, 2007, 8:49 pm You might also be posting in Quick Reply, rather than the Advanced Post.
It seems to me that even in Quick Reply you can post smilies. The smilie board might not be there, but you can still make a smilie appear by typing its name in between colons. Or a semi-colon and a close parenthesis for "wink", a colon and a close parenthesis for "smile", etc.
You got me curious, let me try a quick reply after I post this. It will appear just under this, not in a separate post, but this is where my Advanced Post ends. :)
Testing smilies in Quick Reply: :) ;)  :grumble:
Second quick reply: It worked! :tu:

That happened to me too. Sometimes it happens because you're off-topic or have used some strong words. Sometimes it happens for no reason I, a lowly second-year, can figure out. There is no warning by owl in those cases, I believe.
There's no warning when a whole thread that you started is deleted either, for that matter.
sllagnire October 5th, 2007, 6:33 pm I remember there being a question about why the time is always off. But I don't remember if it was answered. I think it's about 10 minutes off now. It's been getting progessively more off lately. Just thought I would put that out there.

Same here. At least it's easier to figure out what time it's supposed to be when it's 10 off rather than 7.

halfbreedlover October 29th, 2007, 2:13 pm I'm not sure if this is the right thread, but how do you do a strikeout tag? You know, the one that creates a line through the text? I know it is possible in BBC Code (fourth example) (http://docs.simplemachines.org/index.php?topic=57), but it is not working on this forum.
Alastor October 29th, 2007, 2:42 pm It's not included in the working tags on this forum. :)
anabel November 5th, 2007, 11:13 am Help! All threads (but not Magical Me or the main page) are stretched to about twice the width of my (1024 pixel) screen! I checked in IE7, and it's OK there, but in Firefox it's really messed up. Is anyone else having this issue? Images keep getting switched around too, which has happened several times before, for example, random avatars and sig pics in place of smilies! But this is the first time I've had screen width issues.
Ah - I think perhaps it's the image-switching that is stretching the layout!

Tiberius November 11th, 2007, 1:21 am I have a similar problem. When I try to open a page, very often the page finishes loading and is just white. No error messages or anything. Refreshing usually brings the page up although occasionally I have to refresh the page twice....
DeathlyH November 11th, 2007, 2:30 am Admins-what's happening? Everyone's computers are having a ton of trouble getting around on this site. It took my about six or seven tries just to get to this page. Sometimes, it takes a reeeeally long time, and says "Server 404 not found," that type of stuff. I can see everyone else is having this problem as well. What's happening, and how do we fix it?

Yes, I seem to be OK now, thanks, Deathly. At least my two last posts went through without my having to try several times then give up out of frustration. For me the problem happened yesterday late morning-early afternoon - I was busy and I gave up pretty quickly. Today, it started OK then I ran into the same problem again.
I don't know whether this problem is related, but in the "Novella" forum, where post count is off and you are the only one who can respond to yourself - which means that the double-post rule doesn't apply, you're allowed to post right after yourself, since no one else but an admin can - I got my posts "merged" like in the "regular" forums. Very strange (and frustrating!) :grumble:
Oh that's very interesting, Deathly, about the total post amount. Do you think that is what caused the problem? Like all those we expected for Y2K but never happened? Are we going to run into the same problem when we get up near 1 million again? http://www.avenueviet.com/forums/images/smiles/confused.gif

You see people. Intimidation. It's like Al Capone said: "You can get more with a kind word and a gun than you can with a kind word alone."
SageThyme November 12th, 2007, 8:27 am Christmas List for Ali and Kizz:
1. Bigger hammer
2. More 9mm ammunition
3. BLU109 (armor piercing/deep penetrating) or MK82 (2K bomb) - guaranteed to solve all your future server problems. :D

unconvinced November 12th, 2007, 9:52 am Oh that's very interesting, Deathly, about the total post amount. Do you think that is what caused the problem? Like all those we expected for Y2K but never happened? Are we going to run into the same problem when we get up near 1 million again?
I seem to remember we went over a million a few months ago and there weren't any problems, although maybe I'm thinking of something else
Morgoth November 12th, 2007, 10:26 am We go over the million mark every now and then, before some post-destructive admin decides that we cannot have excess posts on CoS Forums. I deleted ten threads myself the other day and saw my post count drop 4,000. I thought "I'm havin' none of that tomfoolery," and re-instated the threads and got my post count back.
Of course I once deleted the entire forums and saw my post count drop to 0... But that's a story for another day, like after I die.

I just flipped through all the skins and it was appearing OK on each of them in my browser (Internet Explorer). Other than that, can't help you.
Voldemorts8thHorcrux November 15th, 2007, 9:16 pm its gone away, i think.

Which browser do you use? I find that Firefox occasionally decides not to display a particular picture, although I have no idea why - it might be one of the add-ons interfering.

DeathlyH November 19th, 2007, 12:37 am I'm having a problem logging out right now. When I go to the top bar and click "Log Out" a message pops up saying "are you sure you want to log out?" I get that screen as well when I go to log out. It's normal, when logging out on COS.
Hope this helped you out :).
DeathlyH November 19th, 2007, 12:50 am Okay. But I still don't understand how I can log out completely so I'm a Visitor.
Fawkesfan1 November 19th, 2007, 12:54 am Okay. But I still don't understand how I can log out completely so I'm a Visitor.
Hmm -- well usually once you log out, and it says that the 'cookies are cleared', then you should show up as a visitor.
At least that's what happens when I go and log out.
DeathlyH November 19th, 2007, 1:41 am After you recieve the message about your cookies being cleared, what do you click on? I've tried everything, and it still says "Good Evening/Afternoon, deathly721." :hmm:

Fawkesfan1 November 19th, 2007, 1:59 am What I'm asking here is: what do you click on when you get to the "cookies are cleared" page?
Oh, I see -- I usually just close the web page. But for what you're going through, it sounds like there may be a login cookie that didn't get deleted or something. I could be wrong about it though.
By the way, just out of curiosity, what kind of browser are you using?
I'm using IE 6 and I'm having no problems logging out on it.
DeathlyH November 19th, 2007, 2:02 am No, I think you're right. I tried doing what you said, and I was still logged on. I think one of my cookies is not working.

I hope that it gets straightened out soon. I'd hate to be having the same problem myself.

In my experience, "your cookies are cleared" means that you are logged out. It happens on the CosForums(Lite) skin, not on some others (Deathly Hallows UK for ex, doesn't do that), don't ask me why.
I had the same problem as you, even worse: I tried to log out, clicked on "Ok", but the whole darn thing froze, the browser shut down, and when I turned it back on, I was still logged on. It drove me nuts. http://www.avenueviet.com/forums/images/smiles/bowl.gif
I called on my brother, who's a better geek than me, and he confessed himself defeated. This was on Internet Explorer. I've used Mozilla Firefox from then on and haven't had that problem again. Knock on wood. http://www.avenueviet.com/forums/images/smiles/icon_mrgreen.gif
Oops sorry - Hadn't read all the posts after the one I responded to. Have you tried changing browsers? It worked for me. If not, try disconnecting the modem completely and reconnecting it, or rebooting the whole sytem, cable modem included.
Of course, after having said that, I bet I won't be able to log out when I try to next time. ;)
gertiekeddle November 19th, 2007, 7:18 am If all does not help to get back to visitor status, clear cookies and cache manually. Then you should be logged out completely.
For IE there must be something like 'Extras - Internetoptions'. Hope this helps. :)
Midnightsfire November 19th, 2007, 10:36 am For IE, at the top of the screen

Funny, I have the opposite problem. I get logged out all the time. I post a message, go back to my e-mailbox to see what other responses I have, come back and show up as a guest. Even if I spend too long a time typing a post, once I'm finished I get the message "You are not logged in. Please log in to post your message." Then I log in and get "You may proceed now." (or words to that effect.)
Also, how do I get the "skin" I want (CoSForums [Lite]) to come up every time I log on? For some reason, when I re-open CosForums, I find myself on another skin with contrasting colors I find difficult to read. I don't seem to be able to make CoSForum [Lite] to stay on as the default skin.

Fawkesfan1 November 25th, 2007, 2:37 am I just had one heck of a weird error on the forums. I was just looking at a page, when all of a sudden, a whole lot of webpages came up. Just of this site -- not adware or something.
Ran a Spybot: S&D scan on my computer and it didn't spot any problems. So I have no idea what it could be.
Anyone else having a similar problem?
Potter_fan November 30th, 2007, 4:12 pm Is there a way to disable smiles in mysig? I'm trying to post a countdown but cant due to there being a : D in the code which changes to :D making the code invalad and my cowntown not work.

I just have not so much of a clue about codes usually, so this might not work. What about a small 'd' as an alternative? :d
Potter_fan November 30th, 2007, 6:06 pm I'll try it

Yes, if it's a countdown thing I'd probably say that it won't work on here. I've tried to put up countdowns before, using HTML, and it's never worked for me :)
gertiekeddle December 1st, 2007, 9:01 am Yes, html is disabled and actually not permitted in signatures on CoS. Sorry, I missed that part. For reference (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=22990). :)
rich_505 December 2nd, 2007, 3:22 pm I had problems with thread notifications, I've always had all threads I post in set to 'instant email notification' for new replies, but this stopped happening around the time Deathly Hallows was released. I totally understand that it might have been switched off to conserve bandwidth and server resources but now I'm still having trouble with it - Every so often a thread will notify me of replies, and other times it doesn't. Really strange!

Yes, I have the same problem. But I thought it was my e-mail system, which sometimes "vanishes" messages into cyberspace. Because sometimes I log in and see "10 new messages", and when I open it, there's only two or three. :grumble:
But very often I don't get notifications for responses, even on threads that I've started (though I don't think it makes a difference whether you're the thread-starter or not) - On the latest one, for example, I only got one notification, but when I came in, there were a dozen responses. Very strange indeed. :hmm:
Liselle December 4th, 2007, 8:36 am I think that on threads that you subcribe to on the email notification that you get it says that there maybe more posts but you will not receive communication of them as you need to log in...or something to that affect.
There may also be other replies, but you will not receive any more notifications until you visit the forum again.

Ah yeah, the system does only send out 1 notification for a reply, otherwise you could end up with 10 or 20 notifications!

Indeed it does, but my point is, it works very inconsistently. I sometimes get, at one point, multiple notifications, one after the other, sent a few minutes apart, about the same thread, and just one about another thread where there are just as many responses. :hmm:
In fact I should go and unsubscribe to some of those threads which have been worked down to the bone and on which response notifications keep coming in. :)
Ah yeah, the system does only send out 1 notification for a reply, otherwise you could end up with 10 or 20 notifications!
Fact is, I do get sometimes up to 5 notifications in a row for the same thread. And on the other hand, none or just one for others where there are multiple responses that came in after I did log back in. I can't make out the logic of it. But it's actually not very important, just kind of a curiosity (the vagaries of the sites' workings - I actually have the same kind of problems on my own chat site.)
Voldemorts8thHorcrux December 16th, 2007, 2:00 am how do I log out? I clicked the log out link at the top of the page, and i says that i did, but when i go back to the index, it logs me back in. I got rid of the cookies too, and that didnt work.

Potter_fan December 28th, 2007, 2:00 am I have started TWO threads on this site, One in Muggle Studies and on in The Stone, and BOTH of them have some how ended up in Quidditch Pitch. I do not know how and according to a mod my song thread had shown no signs of being moved. My other thread is "Vernonless life. Better for harry?" (http://http://cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=114357)
How are my threads ending up in Qudditch Pitch WITHOUT being moved?
Jessica December 28th, 2007, 2:11 am Quidditch Pitch is for games as well as what we call Just-for-fun threads. We will occasionally move threads based on a What If premise to the Quidditch Pitch which is what happened in this case.
Potter_fan December 28th, 2007, 3:15 am oooooooooooook. but waht about the other thread that as NOT moved according to a MOD?
Jessica December 28th, 2007, 3:24 am I looked. It was moved. It was an honest mistake by the Mod who told you that :)
Potter_fan December 28th, 2007, 3:28 am ok then why was it locked with the reason of "It's in the wrong thread?"
Alastor December 28th, 2007, 7:46 am There are two threads started by you in the Quidditch Pitch. Neither is locked. Both are of category What If and were therefore moved from the Cloak to the QP as Jessica said. One of those had earlier been moved to the Cloak from somewhere.
I did not find any song thread started by you. Closed threads are deleted after 24 hours.
Potter_fan December 28th, 2007, 5:23 pm Yeah my thread was closed like a week ago
But I'll keep in mind that "What If" Threads go in QP for now on
EDIT: ummm help I can't get the links in my siggy to work.
Weazleby December 30th, 2007, 6:00 pm So, I think my post count somehow was messed up. I can't be completely certain but it used to be in the 400's but it went back down to the 300's. Is that possible? And if so (and it happened), can it be fixed?
8m57w6 December 30th, 2007, 6:19 pm Often times when old threads are deleted, post count goes down since everything in those threads is now gone. It happens to everyone, and is most likely what happened to you.
Muggle_Magic January 6th, 2008, 5:28 pm I don't know whether this counts as a technical issue but since my last visit yesterday, my post count has gone down 4 or 5 posts. I can't remember what those posts that disappeared were about, or in which thread, but I don't recall having posted anything offensive, or having had a heated argument with anybody. Actually I'm sure I didn't. Where did my posts go? Why were they zapped? :hmm:
gertiekeddle January 6th, 2008, 5:33 pm Sometimes older posts just get lost when older threads get pruned to safe server space. You've done nothing wrong then and it happens to every member. :)

M_M, you're complaining about 4 or 5 posts? NINE of mine have disappeared overnight (in less than 12 hours in fact!) :grumble: So I really sympathize. :)
Gertie, thanks for the explanation. :)
But actually this post is not about that, but about post and owl notifications. I have had no notification whatsoever since about 2 a.m. last night (American EST) whereas I had half a dozen responses to threads and, two owls, one of which is all-important. If I hadn't logged in (and sometimes I don't when I don't see any response or owl notification) I wouldn't have known one piece of very significant news!
Techies, do you think it's a problem with my e-mail system, or with CoS notification system? :hmm: If it's from your end, I'd be very grateful if you could fix it, thanks. :)
Morgoth January 6th, 2008, 10:10 pm I've had this problem with email addresses, where initially I thought it was CoS causing the problem, but it's turned out to be the ISP or email provider treating CoS as a spam site and blocking emails getting through.
There's a way around this by swapping your email address around to a new one or amending any automated spam lists to allow for emails from CoS Forums.
Be warned, you may find by swapping emails around you are completely blocked as you have to verify your email and your new provider has a spam list as well. If that happens, contact an administrator or set up a second dummy account and let us know. FYI: The dummy account would be deleted once your main account was fixed.
Muggle_Magic January 7th, 2008, 4:44 am But actually this post is not about that, but about post and owl notifications. I have had no notification whatsoever since about 2 a.m. last night (American EST)
Funny, same with me. I used to have dozens of notifications a day, I haven't had a single one since January 5th. FleurdJ, I know you and I both use Yahoo. It worked fine before, why would it suddenly stop delivering mail from CoS? No messages in the Deleted (as spam) folders either. Very strange.
Morgoth, thanks for the tip, but why would an ISP or email system suddenly treat one address as spam when it didn't before? CoS is definitely not on my spam list. I'll try switching e-mail addresses. I'm not sure how to set up a dummy account, though. :hmm:
Morgoth January 7th, 2008, 8:40 am Morgoth, thanks for the tip, but why would an ISP or email system suddenly treat one address as spam when it didn't before? CoS is definitely not on my spam list. I'll try switching e-mail addresses. I'm not sure how to set up a dummy account, though.
I don't know. It's happened to a few people on here though. Once they changed email addresses they found new notifications occurred and have had no problems since. That's not to say CoS doesn't have a bug in the system, but we've found nothing to indicate such to date, so I'm at a loss to explain it otherwise.
What I meant was re-register on CoS with a new account, owl an Admin, explain the situation and we'll do a manual authorise on your account. Once that's fixed, we delete the second account. Normally second accounts wouldn't be permitted, but as this is an ongoing problem, it would be silly to prevent people from using this method to try and resolve a problem with their account.
anabel January 7th, 2008, 10:05 am It worked fine before, why would it suddenly stop delivering mail from CoS?
I haven't had this problem specifically with CoS, but I've previously had problems with email providers updating their spam lists to include addresses that they used to let through without problems. One was so overzealous it blocked emails I sent to myself (backing up files)! You ought to be able to add individual addresses to your "permitted" list.
FleurduJardin January 8th, 2008, 2:40 am Funny, same with me. I used to have dozens of notifications a day, I haven't had a single one since January 5th. FleurdJ, I know you and I both use Yahoo. I think I solved the mystery, at least for Muggle_Magic and me, and other members who use Yahoo. I don't know why Yahoo all of a sudden decided that CoS Forums was a spammer, but that's what happened.
M_M, the solution is to go into "Options", then from there to "Dealing with Spams" (or words to that effect). I saw that I had checked the box "Delete all spams immediately". You must have done the same. Uncheck that, and check the box "Place spams in Spam/Bulk Folder" (depending on the Yahoo version you have, that folder is called either "Spam" or "Bulk").
About half an hour after I did that, 6 notifications from CoS showed up in my Spam folder. I marked them "Not Spam" and moved them to my Inbox, et voilą!
Morgoth January 8th, 2008, 8:52 am It seems that to combat the problem of spam, many legitimate sites are now being penalised as a result. Good work on the solution guys. :tu:

Right on all counts, FleurdJ!
I had indeed checked the "Delete Spams immediately without showing" box. I followed your instruction and it worked!
Thank you, Fleur and Anabel. :tu:
Weazleby January 9th, 2008, 4:09 am M_M, you're complaining about 4 or 5 posts? NINE of mine have disappeared overnight (in less than 12 hours in fact!) So I really sympathize.
Yeah, last week I lost about 100 to 150 of my posts. I am definitely a little bummed.
gertiekeddle January 9th, 2008, 6:14 am See here (http://www.cosforums.com/showpost.php?p=4894270&postcount=470). :)
anabel January 9th, 2008, 12:01 pm Thank you, Fleur and Anabel.
You're welcome! :D

I don't blame you! If I lost 150 posts, I'd find myself back in First Year!! :(

The same thing happened to me a few weeks ago. In one post it was gone, a few minutes later I posted again and it was back.
YellowPoofBall January 10th, 2008, 6:13 pm Could you have accidentally unchecked the box that says Show your signature?
ComicBookWorm January 10th, 2008, 8:50 pm Could you have accidentally unchecked the box that says Show your signature?
No. It only happened in one post, and I hadn't been near my profile. Oh and I just checked the individual post, and it shows my signature was definitely checked.
DeathlyH January 11th, 2008, 10:23 pm Today, I recieved an owl from another member and tried to respond. This message came up:
$user[username] has chosen not to receive Owls or may not be allowed to receive Owls. Therefore you may not send your message to him/her.
What do I do?
8m57w6 January 11th, 2008, 10:27 pm It may be that the person you are trying to owl has 50 owls already. That is the max, so until they delete some owls, they cannot recieve/send any. If this is the case, there's nothing you can do until they delete some.
kala_way January 11th, 2008, 11:08 pm You can allow other members to send you email messages.
Receive Email from Other Members They probably have their options set to not receive email from other members. My advice would be to put a note in a thread you know they read often. Or perhaps a nice mod would send an owl to them if you ask nicely (and the person doesn't also have "Receive Email from Administrators" as unchecked).
twinsrule26 January 14th, 2008, 2:22 am I was wondering if anyone alse was having trouble with the site today ? the site seems to be running very slow for me today it takes minutes for a post to go through for me . I've tried refreshing the page and that takes over 1 min to happen.

You're not the only one - I had trouble logging in earlier. But I can't tell you anything else because I don't know why I had trouble logging in either.
8m57w6 January 14th, 2008, 2:26 am Yes, I was also experiencing some problems earlier. It was taking very long for a post to show up after I submitted, or if I tried to Edit it. And at one point when I refreshed a page, it went away completely and I got the "Cannot display..." message. I had to go to mugglenet and get back in through there. I'm not sure what is causing it either, though. Perhaps it's time to prune old threads and free up some space.

I had to go in through Mugglenet to get in one time too. Another time even that wouldn't work. I am glad to know that it isn't just me, but there does seem to be a problem tonight.
Fawkesfan1 January 14th, 2008, 3:43 am I had the same issue earlier, it took me around 3 tries just to be able to log on. I couldn't get on through the favorites section on my browser. I kept on getting a white screen :p. As for going through a search engine, it took me 2 tries just to get in .
anabel January 14th, 2008, 1:13 pm I'm not having any problems now, anyway.
Fawkesfan1 January 14th, 2008, 2:47 pm I'm not having any now as well. That's good :).

Edit:
Scratch that, it was running slowly late this afternoon, had a heckuva time trying to log in again. Just was able to do so now and it's still running rather slow.
Kitunen January 19th, 2008, 2:13 am I suppose that this is a technical problem...for the past couple days the laughing smiley (the "Lol" one) has not been showing up on my computer...just a little box with a dot in the middle (not an x).

I didn't know until my husband bought a new computer that all those little smilies moved. I had the animation setting turned off in my internet options. Your problem may also have something to do with your computer settings, although I wouldn't know which one it would be.

Just a silly thought are you typing it as  or :lol*: without the * ? because the smilies work in lower case only .
I hope that helps.

Fleur du mal January 22nd, 2008, 12:22 am During the last twenty minutes, I wasn't able to open the site. It was no general problem with the provider or my computer though because I had no problems with other sites. I thought perhaps you would like to know about this? :)
DeathlyH January 22nd, 2008, 12:23 am That just happened to me, too. It happened yesterday also, at about the same time. :hmm:
Jessica January 22nd, 2008, 12:23 am We're being hit by a ritual curse that strikes at midnight GMT every day. Dunno why other than Dark Forces and possibly three of Morgoth's ex-wives.
Alastor January 23rd, 2008, 8:14 am And it's obviously midnight GMT all the time. With very short pauses.
MidnighterWitch January 27th, 2008, 9:50 am My post count seems a bit off... the past couple of posts I made in the last week and today it stays on 631.
gertiekeddle January 27th, 2008, 9:56 am Reasons could be that threads you posted in earlier got pruned (although there was no major pruning lately this sometimes happens) or that you posted in sections like the Writing on the wall where the post count is off. :)
Muggle_Magic January 31st, 2008, 6:07 am I hate to do this, but I'm starting my career as a Hogsmeade student with a complaint: I did not get notification of two owls, one by Morgoth who gave me the good news, and one from FleurduJardin who congratulated me. Thank you both :) but - why did my e-mail system Vanish the owl notifications when I got thread responses notification up until an hour or so ago? :hmm:
Fleur, have you had this problem?

P.S. Congrats on getting your avatar. I love David Chiang too!! Could you make the picture a bit bigger, though? One can hardly see him...

This seems to be a problem that many members have had, nothing has changed on the COS side of things, so as Fleur suggested, try your spam folders as your ISP or email provider could have updated some settings that prevent you from getting notification. Unfortunately this is not something we can cure on our side.

I did try my spam folder, it was empty. :grumble: And I continue to get notification on responses to my posts, very up-to-date, it's only Owl Notification that seems to be off. Very strange. :hmm:
I understand however the problem does not originate from, so cannot be fixed by CoS. I appeal to other members who may use Yahoo Mail like me. FleurduJardin, any other Yahoo users, can you help, please? Thank you. :)

Sorry, M_M. I don't understand why you're having this problem at all and can't help. I'm getting all my owl and response notifications with no hitch that I can see. Maybe your browser has something against owls.
Muggle_Magic February 2nd, 2008, 11:29 pm I'm sorry I'm such a dope... And I apologize for this being a copy of a post from the Triwizard Tournament thread, but I'd really like to have an answer to this technical problem so that I can post my entry to the Tournament when the time comes.
The other thread will open on Feb 15 and you can post your entry then. If you need help with attachments check out this thread: A Guide To Posting on CoS Forums (Image Intensive) (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=71466)
I have carefully read "A Guide to Posting" and looked at all the pictures. My problem is, when I post a reply (like I'm doing now), the screen goes from "Miscellaneous Options" to "Thread Subscription". There is NO "Manage Attachments" in between the two. Is this a failure in my browser? (I use Mozilla Firefox). Without the option of uploading an attachment, how can I post my entry? **frustrated**
The screen under "Submit Reply" shows this:
Additional Options
Miscellaneous Options
Show your signature
Automatically parse links in text
Disable smilies in text
Thread Subscription
Notification Type:
Instant Mail notification
Why can't I see the "Manage attachments" that shows on Morgoth's thread? http://www.avenueviet.com/forums/images/smiles/asker.gif

SageThyme February 3rd, 2008, 11:26 am For the past couple of days when I double-click on the icons to the left of the subforums (the ones that say, "Double-click to mark the contents read"), the icon stops flashing, yet when I click to go the main page, the main page still shows those subforums with flashing icons.
This also happens when I've read the last page in a thread, the thread will still show it being bolded (i.e., new posts).
Is CoS not remembering to mark things as read, or is it something in my computer?

I've noticed something similar when I make a reply to as thread and that reply turns out to be at the top of a new page. My own post shows up in Magical Me as a new unread post. It only seems to happen when the page turns over though.
8m57w6 February 3rd, 2008, 4:08 pm I've had this happen some too. It's happened where it's just a little glitch, and the forums never "Mark as Read", even when I click that over and over, but then if I leave and get back in it's fine. I do know that if you read the last posts of a thread, then to leave, click the link back to the main page, it will still show up as unread. I'm not sure why it does that, but in that case all you have to do is go to that forum, then back to the main page. Odd, but it works.
SageThyme February 3rd, 2008, 7:10 pm Thanks, but I think I'll wait until Ali, the technical Wizard, of CoS explains it.
As far as I know, no one knows CoS' technical mojo, like Ali. :D

A million thanks, Tibbetts. That's exactly what it was. I have now checked the right option and, presto! I can see the "Manage Attachments" when I reply. Oh this is so great.
I owe you one! :)
Ooops... I saw that option for a while but now I don't any more. What happened??? :hmm:
