The Age-Old Question of which is better: Cats or Dogs?

The question that has sent millions to war and brought uncaculable damage to communities everywhere! Dogs or Cats? Cats or Dogs? CatDog-DogCat!! What is better? Who is better? How? Why? WHEN?!

Cats naturally, they are way more majestic then dogs, they are pretty, don't need attention all the time, and manageable and they can sleep in your bed (who needs central heating) without pushing you out of it (or in general, mine is an exception :grumble: )

I like dogs and cats actually... :lol: I've been raised with cats and dogs all of my life, so I can't really take sides! But, I voted for dogs.

I can't pick! I have two cats that I absolutly love, but I really want dog that I can take for walks and such. Cats are probably cuter, though! (And they make less of a mess).

I've always wanted a cat, but my dad is allergic to them. We do have a dog, though, and I love him very much, but I still think I'm more of a cat person. Actually, I'm a rabbit person, but that's something else.

I do love dogs, but they're just a bit too slobbery about things, and in the case of my dog destroy everything with even the smallest hint of stuffing, including some of my favorite stuffed animals. (*pout*) I've wanted a cat ever since I was little, dog I could live with or without.

Cats! I've had both cats and dogs, but cats are great. They don't need that much care, they use a litter box (no walking!), no barking and no drool. They're small and cute and they purr. :love:

Dogs lick too much.. and they destroy things.. and they bark. Cats, on the other hand, are sweet and intelligent (well, most of them are - one of mine is extraordinarily dumb, but the other is very smart), and independent, and they PURR! Yes, I love cats :D

P.S. I do in fact like dogs as well, because they can be more fun to play with... but I still like cats better!

Well, I voted dogs, but I have had to much bad expirience with both of them.

*on speakerfon* In the red corner: it's cats! including here are my late half Siamese cat who hated my soul because I pluked her fur when I was a baby and my sisters' hyperactive, crazey kitten, who I think is loonatic.

In the blue corner: it's dogs! though I have a dog myself, I have being chased by not one, but two dogs (one chased me twise) and a third, very ferocious, half Dachshund-half Miniarure Pincher bit me on my Index finger.

Too true, they are experts in that!

But I am pro cat so can't continue finding faults :lol: so... they make nice purring sounds and they are much more comfortable to have on your lap.

My mom told me about a friend of hers who had some sort of herding dog, though I forget the breed, that used to "herd" her daughters stuffed animals. Probably much easier to get teddy bears to obey than actual bears.

I voted dogs because I like them slightly more than cats:)

I have to say, I do like both cats and dogs--but for those life-long helpers and total, unconditional love--dogs, hands down. I'm a dog-person to the end, and totally devoted to those fur-kids totally devoted to us.

There's nothing more heart warming than coming back home and see my dogs catch up with the car, wagging their tails and being so darn happy I'm back they start whining with joy. :D I don't mind the smell much, and I think some dogs are much cuter than cats (to me, it's like all cats look alike >_>).

Cats... Distant, sinister beings with very sharp claws who love stealing my bed... and pouncing on me when I'm lying down. I swear I broke down crying when it happened once... Just being around them makes me nervous, and I know they know it, which in turn makes me even more paranoid.

I love cats, they're just so much more independent, I love it when one of my cats crawls into bed next to me on a cold night, it's the most comforting thing in the world to have a cat *drawls on and on in raptures over her cats* :lol:

As much as I love my cat, I have to say I like dogs more. Dogs just seem to be better companions than cats, plus they are more childish and fun.

I've grown up with cats so they are what I like best. I don't mind dogs and wouldn't mind owning one one day but I think I'll always really be a cat person.

oh my gosh! cats!!! I had no problem with this. I have five cats, all of which are amazing, and then i have one dog who just plain annoys the heck out of me! I can't stand her unless shes sleeping in which case she is cute, so it didnt take me long to decide. Plus, i love it when cats curl up on your bed and sleep next to you. its like you have a moving fuzzy teddy bear.

Yesterday beloved dog tore part of the rain gutter off the house after trapping a woodchuck inside. Since Rex bent it to a 90-degree angle, and chewed both ends quite near shut, Woodchuck managed to stay in the middle and stay alive until Rex went inside, and my mom shook him out of the pipe. Cats aren't quite so destructive as far as I've seen, though I may be proven wrong.

Cats may be solitary, but they're very affectionate, or can be. And they're low matience, usually more cuddly (with vibration, too!)... And if they ARE violent (still speaking about common house cat, here), they aren't very harmful. I, myself, like getting cat scratches. ... <.< ...Yes, I do enjoy some pain... Thus I vote for cats.

Dogs. I am very much a dog person, and I've never liked cats that much. Dogs are loyal, friendly, playful, messy, mischeivous and they eat anything.

I'm probably descended from dogs. I just posted a description of myself up there. :lol:.

LOL, this poll reminds me of one of my favourite films - The War of the Roses.

While visting my aunt and uncle yesterday, I remembered another reason why cats are better. They have two dogs and the dogs are always begging for food. You have to always watch your plate or the dogs will take whatever you're eating.

I once meowed at a stray in my driveway when I was coming home from school. It looked at me funny, so I bent down and called it over. It came a layed by me, so I petted it for a while. It was such a sweet cat, but after a bit, it got up and left. I'm actually not sure if it was really a stray or not, since we have these people in our neightborhood who just let their cats wander.

Hey--I have salukis. If you want an "independent" dog, they are very clever and self reliant. If they had thumbs, they'd take over :lol: A saluki would be offended if you called them "needy".

I have owned cats, too--I do like them. I had one named Whimpy--he was about the neediest, clingy and human-reliant animal I ever knew! I've had another cat that was otherwise.

Just like people, animals come in all shapes and types...dogs and their personalities do, too!

The Chinese eat cats and it is totally disgusting. Just google "cats China" and see what comes up. Your lunch will probably come up also. If I had a fortune I'd spend it on buying up all the cats in the Chinese markets.

Depends on the amount of chocolate they had to pull on a daily basis and knowing you and your addiction... ;)

I think they both have good points and bad points.
Cats
- Independant, could very easily fend for themselves and need minimal management whilst away on holday.
-Can be very loving when they want to be
- Are alot of fun
- Have enough personality to create the impression of having another family member
- Make you feel needed and wanted
HOWEVER
-everythings on their terms, if they dont wana do something, they wont.
If your allergic to cat hair, then they make you want to rip your nose off due to insane itchiness!
-They may be independany, but they still rely on you and cost money.

Dogs
-Alot of fun to train
-Always happy to see you and very loyal
- Make you feel loved and give plenty of cuddles
- Provide excercise, due to large amount of walks they need
- Proivde companionship on a different level to other people

HOWEVER
-Require alot of care and attention, and make going on holiday difficult as a dogsitter is required.
- Always find the smelliest dog mess ad dirtiest puddles to roll in!
- Time consuming due to amount of walks needed

But in my personal experience, Ive always found dogs alot more enjoyable as I enjoy the training aspects of animal care and find dogs to be alot more responsive, I also enjoy being needed and having someone there for me to give me cuddles.

After some thought, I think that dog people want something they can dominate, that worships them, that loves them no matter what they do. In my own personal experience dogs are pretty high maintenance and they are messy.

I think cat people are more confident about themselves and are content to let the cat just be itself.

If you bring a kitten home, you show it where its food and water are, put it in its litterbox and scratch its paw to show it what is expected of it. Give the kitten a couple of toys and watch it play, watch it eat, drink and use the litterbox. Pet it and it purrs, and loves you back without washing your face with its tongue.

If you bring a puppy home, you have papers all over the place, you have to take it outside every single time it eats so it can poop and pee. When it begins to teeth it eats your sofa and coffee table. It will turn over the garbage. If you don't pay attention to it, it is bored and chews your shoes or the chair legs, it will dig holes in your garden. It must be kept in a crate when you are gone or it will destroy your house. Dogs smell and need to be bathed.

I have four cats and you would not know it when you come in. The house does not smell like cats or cat poo. I would rather scoop a litterbox twice a day rather than have to do all the work that is needed to train a dog.

I'm just a lazy old cat person, I guess.

Which is why I'll never be able to have a dog on my own... Way too many responsibilites for me to handle. I'm just content with my dogs _ or should I say, the dogs my mother cares for.

Cats are completely out of question for me, due to my slight felinophobia. And you're right, I love a pet who loves me back and whom I can effectively dominate. I like knowing what's going on in my pet's head (i.e. for dogs, next to nothing, but that's part of why I like them so much). I view cats as mysterious, vicious beings with very sharp claws who love prowling around me just to see me squirm. I swear. :scared:

After some thought, I think that dog people want something they can dominate, that worships them, that loves them no matter what they do. In my own personal experience dogs are pretty high maintenance and they are messy.Actually I met many dog persons who did kind of hard for a long time to really dominate their dog and accept that it is an animal usually living in rules. It seems the wish to have a dog comes first (if you didn't grow up with them already) but the awareness that you have to become a lordling to them later.

Seeing how different the personalities of dog and cat persons can be I tend to say you can't say much about the human's character - and we may better skip the topic before we make this an even busier war zone in here. :) But I would subscribe that pet owners may go along better with the particular other human, just to have a common start with.


I like cats too actually (don't tell anyone), but I believe it depends a bit how much attention they need. The male cat of friends just slightly begins to carve the furniture (and sometimes books random guests just left on the table) if ignored longer than ten minutes. Just never try to entertain him, when your schedule allows it - I still have some scars on my hands, but last visited these guys in September. :lol:

I do not think one is better then the other. I have a dog and I love him. He is a small dog but he does not know it. He thinks he is the biggest dog on the block and he is only about 10 pounds but he loves me for the way I am and I can not ask anymore then that from him.

One of my cats, Nimbus, has managed to win the trust of a *yuck* dog, and is now firmly entrenched in the canine camp. He is quietly collecting information for us to use in our campaign of feline world domination... ummm... as soon as he finishes his nap.

I'm a cat person!

I like dogs, too, but I don't know if I'd ever get one. I've dogsat, and they're a lot of work. And my cats are a ton of work as it is. Plus, um, they sort of slobber on me, and the big ones usually make a habit of standing up on their hind legs and trying to lick me on the lips. Charming, I'm sure, but sloppy.

I love my cats, though in the future, I'm not sure I'd have more than one. My cats mostly hiss at each other.

I prefer smaller dogs to big ones too. I've always grown up with cats (although I had a dog for a few years when I was younger) so big dogs always take a bit of getting used to for me.

This is more propaganda from the Canine controlled, left-paw media! Cats are very willing to accept those positions, but not for just kibbles and bits! Just the other day, my cat tripped me to prevent me from going outside where all manner of horrible things could have occurred.:p

Wasn't it Mark Twain who said something to the effect that "Cats and women will do as they please and men and dogs should just get used to it."

You don't see eight cats pulling a sled through snow and ice either.

Cats will do tricks just like a dog but you have to reward them with food in order to get them to do anything. Personally they may not be nicer in that regard but they sure are smarter. Why do something for a pat on the head if you can get a real reward?

I have put cats in the lead with my vote but I can also see why people like dogs so much. Perhaps if I haven't been struggling with a severe childhood trauma involving dogs I would have been in a better position to appreciate them. However, I have come a long way. I don't hate dogs anymore and I even manage not to flinch at the sight of them sometimes. I even like some of the chappies now :) Especially the ones called Chao-Chao, I think..

I love all animals. Though i do have 6 cats i like dogs. I love cats because they love to cuddle with you. But i love dogs because they love to run and play with you.

Better for what? They're different , but they're both lovable. Dogs can be trained to assist people in various ways, so if you need a working animal to help with something, dogs are better. On the other hand, cats' purring has a very calming effect on the human nervous system, so cats make good companion animals for people who aren't up to walking a dog, or who just want a natural soporific. They also are good at hunting small pests like mice, and even scare slightly bigger pests away. I love both dogs and cats, so I didn't vote. You should have included an option for those of us who didn't want to choose one over the other.

There are millions more cats than dogs in homes these days but I think that is due to the fact that cat owners will have more cats than dog owners will have dogs. Once upon a time we had eight cats and you wouldn't have known they were there. The litter boxes were patrolled regularly and we kept the house very clean. No pet hair around, etc.

So a visitor who rang our doorbell wouldn't come in and sniff and say, "Oh, you have cats."

If someone had eight dogs in the house and a visitor rang the doorbell, either the dogs would begin to bark or, when the visitor entered he or she would either be knocked down by the herd of dogs wanting to greet them or he or she would be drowned in slobber. It's not the dogs' fault they are so obnoxious. Most people don't bother to train their dogs, witness the popularity of the television program "The Dog Whisperer" and "It's Me or the Dog."

Xraydude is regularly "pugged" by all three of our sweet little puglets and he has been duped many, many times into relenting and giving out treats, pets, kisses, hugs, etc. Xraydude always apologizes to the cat if the cat is within eyesight of this disgusting display of doggie love. I have an odd perspective. This is applicable only to those who have a preference for dogs over cats.
One cat will not be very interesting, but one dog will be fun.
Many cats, with 4-6 being the starting line for "many", are quite interesting. Many dogs, however, are less so--it is rather inconvenient to have a drove of hounds that are... "mounting", to put it a bit lightly... every object in one's domicile.

i personally like cats better because they're just the right size (they dont get overly big and they're not too small) and they're sooo cute and they're VERY clean and quite easy to potty-train (they usually already are)
