Card Making

A few years ago, my mum discovered the home shopping channel and bought herself a gigantic card making kit. I teased her relentlessly until the kit arrived. Then found myself sitting down at the table with her, making my own Christmas cards. I don't make cards quite as often as I used to, but I find it can be quite therapeutic!

Does anyone else make their own cards?

I have made cards before...I made a couple of thanksgiving cards that I still have. Cause you don't really send Thanksgiving cards all too often. :p It's pretty fun to do in a group.

My first cards were rubbish! :rotfl: But with a bit of practice, it gets better. I find myself staring at handmade cards in shops now to get ideas!

I have tried making cards before and my worst problems is getting the paper to fold perfectly. It always is a little off and it bugs me :grumble:

Is there as special hint to folding the paper, or is there somewhere you can by blank paper cards?

Practice again, I think.

And yeah, there should be some place you can buy pre-folded cards. They are easy to come by here. :D

I've tried to make my own cards. Most often I end up scrunching them up in frustration ( I am terrible with fiddly things ). I make my sister a birthday card every year though, she doesn't care if they look rubbish.

My parents bought me a card making kit for Christmas a few years ago and I really got into it. So now I always make birthday cards for friends and family, I think that it makes it much more personal.

The trick with folding paper is that you have to cut it to nearly exact dimensions, which is hard to do quickly with scissors. I use my sewing mat board (which has inches and angles on it) and rotary cut tool. It makes cutting much easier and more exact.

Also to get a great crease...you can use what is called a bone.

You can crease the center with the bone... and then fold it over ... run the bone down the fold.

Paper also has a grain as in fabrics...if it doesn't fold nicely one way...try turning it one quarter and fold it the other...sometimes that is all you need....find the grain of the paper.

Also where I work we sell blank cards just for card making.

Would quilling/paper filigree count as card making? Cause I love to make little figures and glue em on cards.

I make my own cards thru desktop publishing-I'd love to add this element on top of that! Can you guys post pix of your work? I'd LOVE to see your creations!

I started using the heavy cardstock white paper to print on which I take out of scrapbooks when I use a coloured sheet instead!

I make my own cards too, but I make then using the photoshop on my computer, printing them in a cool Matt card paper that I buy in any paper shop. I also had some problems folding then, but after I started to use a proper paper cutter (I don't no how to call it in english, sorry) with rules and a very sharp knike to cut it the job became very easy, since I also use the ruler in it to mark the line where I nedd to fold.
Making cards is fun and people like to receive it since is more personal. I make them for Christmas (even for my clients) and for some birthdays (especially for family members).

Emma, you work at Michael's?? I'd never be able to leave if I worked there! My sister and I can easily spend an hour or more in just one section of that place.

Thanks! Yours are awesome, how exactly do you make them? It looks like rolls of colored paper. Do you sell those? I can see a lot of people wanting to buy them! ;)

My sister and one of my friends make their own cards and they are beautiful. I have tried my hand at making some Christmas cards this year and although most of them are simply rub on transfers I have added some embellishments and ribbons etc., They aren't the world's greatest but they'll do!

I have also made two birthday cards now. The first one wasn't brilliant but the effort was appreciated and the second one I even braved stamps with embossing stuff (!)...my sister is such a whizz she can even help me over the internet!

well, i just use publisher. its actually really easy. if i feel like it, i might draw something for a card or something. i just get a card layout, get a few pictures around the same colors, random shapes.... something to say, its very simple.

I make cards but I use rubber stamps and different kinds of media to color them. I have about eight thousand stamps and they are completely organized as are all my pencils, watercolors, paints, pens, inks, ink pads, papers, etc. I have a craft room that is full to bursting. My biggest disasters are my grandchildren who, if they get in there unsupervised, make terrible messes.

I've been making Birthday and Christmas cards every year since I was about 10. I have to say that I've never used bits and pieces that you stick on. I prefer to completely hand draw them, although I do sometimes use tracings.

... I've made cards before.. But, not since I was 10... ^^;; The last one I made was a pop up card, with a frog in it, for mothers day...

I like giving out funny cards, but I don't have much of a sense of humour, so I just buy them
