I especially like Romance and comedy - Inkwolf is the master of HP comedy fan-fic!
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
The characters being themselves
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Characters behaving completely out-of-character
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?Yes! I've written "Snape's Happy Ending" An alternate book 7 written before DH came out, because I was convinced that Snape would die - probably miserably, so I wrote a story in which he not only lives, finds romance and lives happy ever after.
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
Anything I'm interested in. I've written X-files fan fic and hope to have a go at "Torchwood"

Again - I like to see the characters well written.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?stories that don't go anywhere except the bedroom!
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?None other those already mentioned.
Lord_Nomolous October 5th, 2007, 11:09 pm I stopped reading fanfiction a year ago, because it got to a point where everything I read either had a) really bad grammar, or b)the stupidest plot ever (unless it was Parody). I only read it occasionally now.
Part A:
1. What type do you generally like to read?
Definately Hogwarts era. Too many cliched Maurader era stories out there.
2. What do you like better?
Alternate Universe :D
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Comedy or General. But when I read fanfiction a lot, I would read a lot of Angst. But that was back when I was AngstyTeenager!Nomolous.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Good grammar, spelling, and writing. If the writing is bad, but the plot is good, I still won't read it. I also look for originality.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Things that happen for no reason at all. Or Hermione "maturing" and her hair turning into "a sea of chesnut and cinnamon waves." *snorts*
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
When I was thirteen, I wrote a story about the young Marauders waiting for their facial hair. It was really stupid.
Part B:
Never read that much outside of Harry Potter. Just a few LotR and Star Wars parodies.
Part C:
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Grammar and spelling! Please have someone beta your fic before you post it. And make sure your beta is smarter than a second grader. :grumble:
hplova15165 October 6th, 2007, 3:08 am Questionaire:
A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)
I have developed an odd obsession with this era and the love life between Lily and James. I love reading fanfics from this era, it helps my obsession.
2. What do you like better?
c) Other
I'm a fan of a little bit of both - I like it to stick with what Jo wrote, but it could vary in facts and scenes. That I don't mind.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
e) Other
Is there an all of the above for this question?
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
The quality of writing: is it poor, okish, or awesome. Most of the fanfics I read are written by wonderful writers. It's no fun to read a boring fanfic, so I usually read ones with twists and turns.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
The bad guys winning, or something COMPLETELY different from what Jo created. Or the good guys doing something wrong and bad, unless they later feel remorse about it.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yes, three.
1. The Last Horcrux, which is almost finished, was a fanfic about what would happen in book 7. It turns out a good number of people like it.
2. Lovestruck, it's sequel - people are reading it, but not leaving feedback. I just can't understand why. But it's a story from Rose Weasley's point of view.
3. Tears, Memories, and Wishes - a one-shot of Harry returning to his home and experiencing a flashback of the night Lily and James died.
Come on... you know you want to read them... the links are in my signature.
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
I haven't written fanfics for other stories before. Only Harry Potter. But if I could, I would definately write a fanfic for one of the books in "His Dark Materials."
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Good grammar, talent, twists & turns.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Bad grammer, boring writing, and no talent.
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Grammer, definately. When a person has bad grammer, I can't stand reading the fanfic! It just drives me insane, no matter how good the fanfic is.

A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
I really enjoy mostly Marauder era and Next Generation.
2. What do you like better?
I read mostly storyline but if an AU fic is really done well, I can read it and enjoy it.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Easy. Romance and Comedy.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Good spelling and grammar. And a good plot. If a story has very obvious spelling mistakes all over the place, I won't read it. It doesn't matter what the plot is like if the story is so full of mistakes that it is hard to read.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Characters being completely out of character. It bugs me to no end.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yep. I've done three of them. Only one of them is complete at this moment though.
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? I don't write other stories.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?

3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Poor grammar and spelling.

C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
No, not really. I think I stated all my Pet Peeves already.

b) Romance
and
c) Action
But Romance is the best type!

5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?

Storyline fanfiction.

Romance mainly. :D But I love some of the comedy stuff I've seen too!
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
A writer with the ability to write a coherent sentence. :D Aside from that, I love to read humour in a piece of writing, otherwise I tend to get bored.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Anything that is completely un-canon.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?

hopefulgirl86 October 6th, 2007, 5:38 pm Questionaire:
A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
d) Other (explain)-I like all. If the summary sounds interesting I will click on it and read it.
2. What do you like better?
c) Other -Although I do like to read ones that stick to JK Rowlings version of events I actually prefer AU so it's a bit of both. But again, if the summary looks interesting and it is a well written fiction I will read it.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
e) Other - All.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction? Right now I am looking for the next generation series but normally I don't look for just anything. I look through the list of titles and click on one I find interesting.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction? Slash. I have read some slash and if it's a good written story I'll read it but it's something I normally look for.
Mary-sues. I will not read it if it has the characters to perfect. That goes for when people write about Ginny or Hermione suddenly too perfect. I know canon Ginny seems like she is perfect but that's because when she is older it's through Harry's point of view and he feels she is perfect. However, a good writer can make her the same as she is in the books but give her faults as well when they are writing through her POV.
I will not read the stories where Hermione suddenly became beautiful and perfect over the summer. I can't stand them.
I don't mind OC's but you can always tell when the OC is going to be the perfect girl and get Harry, Draco or Ron.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yes, several. I don't think they are ever that good but I just love writing them.
I am actually guilty of writing a Mary-Sue story. The very first Harry Potter fanfiction I wrote was one. I did the worst crime in fanfiction: I did self-insert. I wasn't friends with Harry and co. though. I made it when he was out of school because I would start the year after he left school so I did that and made it what would happen if I was accepted at Hogwarts (despite the fact I am Canadian:rolleyes:) and wrote it as my seven years at Hogwarts. The only good thing I can say about it was that I wasn't perfect. I only had two friends, made average grades, hated the Slytherins, put myself in Hufflepuff because that would likely be the house I would end up in, I had enemies, I was exactly the way I am but just at Hogwarts. I still actually have it because it's the longest story I've ever written. I wrote it two years ago so it's before Deathly Hallows and shortly before Half Blood Prince was released so Dumbledore's alive.
My fanfictions now revolve around Harry. I have an OC one too about if Dudley had a sister named Darla and she was a witch. But there are so many now, it'd take a long time to name them all.
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)Gone with the Wind and VC Andrews.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction? I like reading ones related to movies.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction? Same as Harry Potter. Perfect characters and etc.
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction? Mary-Sues/Gary-Stu's. When people shorten Hermione to Mione.
When people write the Marauders era they make Peter Pettigrew an idiot. I know what he did was wrong but when they were kids he had to have something to him or else they wouldn't have let him hang out with them. I don't think Peter was bad until he got older and was out of Hogwarts and maybe he wasn't ever bad, just a cowardly rat. But I've read some where people have James and Sirius using Peter as a slave, where Peter is exactly like Crabbe and Goyle (can't talk but grunts) where he talks like he is five and etc. I understand the hatred for him, I hate him too. I just think there is more to it then we've read. Remember, we are reading it through Harry's point of View. We learned there was more to the Malfoys then it seemed. Dudley Dursley is another good example for that.
IMissPadfoot October 6th, 2007, 5:43 pm :o You are a WWE fan! I didn't know that! You must owl me the link to your fan-fic... I might enjoy it!!!
I thought I'd already told you that! I will owl you the link later!
Um... What's WWE?
World Wrestling Entertainment. :D Shameful, I admit - but good fun!
Fury October 6th, 2007, 5:50 pm I thought I'd already told you that! I will owl you the link later!
Thanks! Got the link now...
Oh, and if you did tell me that, I might have forgot it . Probably not your mistake!
LilyDreamsOn October 6th, 2007, 6:22 pm A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era) My favourite characters are in that era, so it makes sense. I'll read anything, though, if it's really well written
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
d) Other (explain)
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
b) Alternate Universe
c) Other
I like a bit of all three, actually! I tend to read most Storyline Fanfics, but the ones that tend to really stick in my mind are the AU ones.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
e) Other
Everything. I tend to sway more towards comedy, though. I highly recomment people look up "The Nekkid Quidditch Match" - it's hilarious and very original.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
First and foremost, good writing. I can't stand spelling and grammatical errors. I then look for something that's not cliche and overdone, and then I look for a story where everyone is actualy in-character.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
The oh-so overdone American exchange student who is mysterious yet beautiful and all the guys fall for her... yet she has a dark past and one of the male heart-throbs ends up getting close to her and discovers her secrets, blah blah blah. It's obviously just a story about what the author would like to happen to them if they'd gone to Hogwarts.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yes, and they were all rubbish, so don't worry, I know how hard it is to write good fanfictions. I'm not just being an annoying critic!
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
I've tried doing a Veronica Mars story but it fell flat on its face. I find it hard to do anything other than Harry Potter.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Err... same as what I look for in HP fanfiction.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Mary-Sues. I HATE THEM. They drive me insane.
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Er yes, as I stated above, Mary-Sues. And spelling mistakes.
ginnypotter19 October 7th, 2007, 6:31 am Questionaire:
A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
I generally like to read next generation and or marauder era. Actually, you will not find me reading anything that is based 'on' Harry Potter. Your's, Furry, had an exception because it was about Ron and Hermione. Other than that, I enjoy my 'Harry Potter' time reading the actual books.
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
d) Other (explain)
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
b) Alternate Universe
c) Other
I really like all three. When I mean story line, I mean like the things we may already know about the characters. Marauder era, if they have the things mentioned that we already know it is really good, they can still make up their own things though! Next Generation, well, I really liked reading about what people thought the next generation would be, but now that we know a bit about the real next generation, I like to know that the kids know things their parents did, and that any clues that were given about the children are mentioned.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
d) Comedy
I do not know why, but in Harry Potter fanfiction I cannot read real action, mostly it is because I don't think of Harry Potter as a action story, more of an adventure. I don't read those in fanfiction either though.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
A good story line and the author can keep up with their characters. For example, if your character is always happy and perky all the time, don't make them all of the sudden moody in the next chapter because you have nothing to say for them. You lose character.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
So far I haven't come across anything I don't like, but if there ever were to be anything, I'd have to say bad grammer. I know I do it all the time, so I can't be too harsh on it for other people, but if I'm reading it I do get a bit frustrated.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
23. I really, really like writing them.
-----------------------------
I don't really read any other fan fiction because I do not obsess over anything else really.
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Giving up. I've read so many good fan fictions but suddenly when someone is busy they post something allong the lines of They lived, got married, and died a happy life. The End. I don't care what the reason is, there could have been at least one final, long if need be, chapter discussing what went on and happened. If you are moving somewhere else, or are going to collage or something, write the last chapter please. It annoys me when I'm reading something good and you are too busy or are just to lazy to complete it.
hmweasley November 23rd, 2007, 12:41 am A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
d) Other (explain)
Mainly A but I read all kinds. I really like C to.
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
b) Alternate Universe
c) Other
C I like both
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
e) Other
B mainly, but I read all kinds.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Well written and a good plot. Sticks to canon unless it's an alternate universe fic.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Doesn't stick to canon (unless alternate universe). Badly written. Not a good plot boring. Characters don't seem to act like themselves (unless part of plot).
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yes.
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
Suite Life of Zack and Cody, Avatar, and more.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Same as in Harry Potter fanfiction.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Same as in Harry Potter fanfiction.
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
In Harry Potter:
Stories that have James as seeker.
Stories were the Mauraders treat Peter Pettigrew badly even though they don't know he's going to betray them. If they really did treat him the way they do in some fanfiction then I don't blame him!
General fanfiction:
Characters don't act right.
Author doesn't finish story. (even though I'm guilty of this)
DancingMaenid November 26th, 2007, 8:53 pm A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)
(Note: I haven't read Harry Potter fanfic in a good while, so that's based on what my old preference was when I did)
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
(though I've read good AUs)
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
e) Other
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
When I read it, I looked for good characterization and interesting plots.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Poor characterization, overly-cliched, nonsensical plots.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Tried to, didn't get very far with it.
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
I used to write Star Wars fanfic, and am considering getting into Heroes fanfic if I can find the time. However, in general, I tend to read it, not write it.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
That can depend on the fandom somewhat, but basically good stories with good characterization. I also tend to prefer shorter stories, since even though I've read some great longer ones, I don't usually have the time to follow longer stories. Same with Harry Potter fanfic, actually.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Stuff that's wildly inappropriate for the canon it's written for (like super-dark tragedies with characters from a sitcom).
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Bad spelling and grammar, nonsensical plots or plots that are the same as a dozen other stories, with no variations, poor characterization, and Mary Sues.
AmeliaPotter November 27th, 2007, 10:05 am A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
d) Other (explain)
Since we don't have that much information on either of these Eras, they tend to be my favourite as a type of 'fill out the blanks' thing. I tend to read fictions that are closest to how I imagine things to happen. Hogwarts Era fics bore me.
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
b) Alternate Universe
c) Other
I put other but I really mean both. I tend to like stories that stick to what JKR has said, but I accept that in some cases factors need to be changed for the story to be more enjoyable.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
e) Other
I also like drama, though not on its own (has to be Romance/Drama or something like that).
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
They have to be about particular characters; Lily and the Marauders, or Rose / Scorpius and occasionally Lily / Scorpius. Mostly I read romance/humour, so they have to be cute and quirky with the occasional argument. Love/hate stories are awesome too, which is why I used to be obsessed with Lily/James. If something doesn't seem to have a plotline I don't bother. I really like descriptive writing, and foreshadowing is another awesome technique (I suck at using it, unfortunately). I have this thing for unconventional stories, and I do like a bit of intertextuality; for example I've read quite a few good Rose/Scorpius fics that reference Romeo and Juliet. In one I read the other day, Rose and Scorpius had to read it for Muggle studies, and his scathing criticisms mirrored some of my thoughts on certain parts of the play. Heck, I'll just quote it:
“Well?” she demanded. “Wasn’t it the most wonderful thing you’ve ever read.”
“No!” he said, still staring openly at his friend. “First of all, Romeo has got to be the biggest schmuck I’ve ever encountered in literature!” Rose gaped at him. “Seriously, Rose!” he insisted. “At the start of the story he’s pining over some other girl, saying as how he can’t live without her. Then he sees Juliet and completely ditches the first girl!”
“That’s because Juliet was his true love! Rosaline was just –”
“No,” Scorpius said, cutting her off. “Juliet was just an infatuation that he didn’t live long enough to grow tired of.” Rose swatted him on the arm.
Lol, that was exactly what I thought when I read it (though I still loved R & J). That was my favourite part of that fiction... it's Brush up Your Shakespeare (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/3714257/1/Brush_Up_Your_Shakespeare) if anyone wants to read it.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Mary-Sues, bad grammar / spelling, the usual stuff. Things that go against what JKR has said, eg characters walking around Hogwarts with their iPod and such. Truth or dare is another thing that turns me off a story straight away, the same with 'bet-fics' except in special circumstances. Cliches characters is another big one. I once read this story that pretty much murdered the characters of the Marauders through cliches and terrible dialogue... a friend of mine saved it to her computer so we read it a while back, it still makes me cringe. I think that's around when I stopped reading fics...
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yeah, I still have a few posted at fanfiction.net. But they're all really bad, because I was like 13 when I wrote them... my reviewers seemed to like them though. I tend to like one-shots and parodies best, because I can never finish a chaptered story. Right now I have four chaptered stories that haven't been updated since who knows when... Anyway, as an author I understand the difficulty of creating an engaging fic... I also realise that some of the things I write people probably find annoying too.
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for?
I once wrote a Snow White parody with a friend... I also wrote a Lizzie MacGuire-ish one, but that was a HP crossover parody... thing.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
I don't really read anything other than HP...
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Same as above.
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
When Scorpius is portrayed exactly the same as his father, since JKR said that he was an improvement on Draco. Marauder fictions where the author exclude/bullies Peter Pettigrew through other characters, especially the Marauders. I hate him too, but it's been made clear so many times that James, Sirius and Remus trusted and befriended him... the way some authors treat him is terrible, canon-wise. OOC-ness in canons, Time-travel fics, exchange students, stories where there's a canon/original character romance, as well as all the stuff in A5, tend to annoy me.
HGHPRW December 2nd, 2007, 10:34 pm A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
d) Other (explain)
I generally like Hogwarts Era or Marauder Era. I don't really like Next-Generation, because we don't really know what those kids are like...you could say that about Marauder Era too, but we still know more about Marauder Era, I think.
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
b) Alternate Universe
c) Other
I like all of the above, providing that they are well written.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
e) Other
I like romance, action, and general best. Comedy is sometimes just annoying, to me. Other...what types?
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
A good story line, with characters that I mostly know, that isn't boring and that doesn't have horrible grammer or spelling.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
A non-magic fic, a fic with only alternate characters, anything too far off the wall...
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
I have written some, but I never finished or posted it.
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
I don't read any other fan-fiction.
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
I really don't like horrible grammer, or a dull plotline. If a character is too much out of character, or if the story is a crossover, or if you really can't tell it's Harry Potter, I don't like that.

a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
e) Other
Comedy, action, romance only if it's written properly and everything else. :D
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Really, really out of character characters. :) And when people write Zambini instead of Zabini. It annoys me so much!
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yup it's a one-shot called Darkness about a girl who is a prisoner of war.
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Anything that is written really badly.
mac_attack December 4th, 2007, 5:59 am I don't actually read HP fanfic anymore, I stopped when I was like 13 or 14. I just kind of realized one day that none of the ones I read were doing it justice, and I didn't like them. Hope no one minds me answering this anyway.
A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
d) Other (explain)
I could usually only ever get into this one. Not sure why, but I was never really interested in the Marauders. (Don't hate me, Marauders-lovers, please!)
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
b) Alternate Universe
c) Other
I liked other stuff, the storyline stuff I thought should be left to JK. Personal opinion. I really liked character analysis if they were well-written.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
e) Other
I'm not into action or comedy. Mostly because I have found that many people don't write action very well. And for comedy, it was because so many of the stories' comedy just wasn't funny to me.
But I am a girl, so naturally I like romance. :p And I used to be (and depending on the time of the month, still am ;)) somewhat angsty. Maybe it's the lack of drama and angst in my real life? Hmmm, I shall ponder that. But I did occasionally like myself a dramatic/angsty story.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
A well-written story. Good use of grammar, proper spelling, no stupid cliches, etc. Something that grabs my attention and actually makes me want to read further.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Someone mentioned it above: The whole Hermione comes back from summer and is suddenly beautiful (cinnamon curls, a new tan, and "sexy" clothes, etc.). (Or Ron/Harry are suddenly really muscle-y and ripped.) When people insert someone exactly like themselves into a story. Stupid storylines, excessive swearing, people bringing their ipods to Hogwarts, bad spelling/grammar. I also hate it when people don't double space and separate paragraphs! It makes my eyes hurt to try to read a single-spaced block of words. (I've noticed the single-spaced block ones tend to also have poor spelling and grammar.)
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
 can't say that I have, no.
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
Although I gave up on HP fanfic, I do occasionally read other kinds.
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
Plead the fifth, on account of this answer making me look like a massive dork. :p
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Interesting plot, good spelling/grammar, characters act themselves(unless it's the point of the story that they don't act themselves), etc. Stories with the timing believably spaced (where people don't meet in the first chapter and have a kid together by the second, or solve a conflict in a matter of a few paragraphs.)
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
All the stuff I listed about HP. And when people write like this: "Scene: it's night. Character1: Hey. Character2: Hey!"..That was a bad example, but you get my point...script writing. It's annoying. The dumb, cliche, done-to-death storylines. People who don't finish a story. Or stories that start out really well, and then suddenly go downhill.
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
People who write in net-speak. When an author writes the same type of story over and over, with only slightly different circumstances (there is a (non-HP) author like this that I used to read, until every single story became unintelligible from the one before it.). Excessive swearing in a story. Making huge changes to characters for no reason at all (making straight characters gay, turning a guy character into a girl, making a blond brunette, making someone smart into someone stupid.)
Just a question for others who may know. HP fanfic confused me about this point: Is Blaise Zabini a girl or a boy?

A central plot. I also prefer dialogue based fiction.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Absolute absence of imagery and symbolism.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yes

Only HP so far.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Same as HP response
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Same as HP response
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
I don't enjoy spelling mistakes but I can understand how they're made. Bad grammar, however, is much more annoying. I also don't think that "And then he woke up from his dream" is a good way to end a fan-fiction.
LoonyMagic January 4th, 2008, 11:44 am A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
Something that is a lot like the Potter-verse - a mixture of comedy, action and romance.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
I look for interesting characters. And if the fan fiction has characters that are existing characters, I like to see the author staying true to those characters. Also, of course, a good knowledge of the Harry Potter world and good, interesting writing.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Mary Sue's are a pet peeve of mine. If I see a Mary Sue I pretty much stop reading instantly. Also, fan fictions that are obviously written by someone who hasn't got much knowledge of the Harry Potter world.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Once. It was alright, but I only worte it for my own benefit :)
GrangerHermione April 3rd, 2008, 9:59 pm A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
I don't read much fan-fiction, but when I do it's usually about the Next Generation because, aside from the epilogue, we don't know much about them. It's interesting to see how others think of them.
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
I usually like it when they stick to canon. I don't know why, but it bugs me a little when they don't.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
d) Comedy
I always like a good laugh. :D
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Nothing in particular, really. Mostly just a good idea for a story and a good writing style. :)
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Usually I don't like it very much when they stray from canon, but I'm not saying a good fan-fic has to be canon.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Once or twice, but I never got very far in and I never finished it. I'm afraid it's more work than I was expecting. :D
*I won't answer section B because I don't really read anything but HP fan-fictions.
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Not really. :)
Mad_Druid April 4th, 2008, 8:08 am 1. What type do you generally like to read?
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
d) Other (explain)
I'll give most things a try, but I've never really been able to get into Maurader-Era. Nobody writes the Trio like JK does so I don't read much Hogwarts-Era. I enjoy Next-Generation because you're free to go pretty much wherever you want with the characters because we know so little about them. I like little one-shots about minor characters which is why I chose option d).
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
But I don't mind a little romance weaved into it.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Good writing and a story that captures my attention. And anything to do with Neville.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Americanisms, bad spelling, new characters who come to Hogwarts in their 5th year and have something to hide.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yes, but it wasn't very good. I don't mind doing one-shots but I'm not good at commiting to long stories.

b) Alternate Universe
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
c) Action
d) Comedy
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Something that does not focus too much on romance.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Too much focus on romance
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
No.
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
I've been a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer since the beginning, and I think I started reading fanfiction sometime around season four or five, which would have been about 8 years ago. I don't mind romance in these fanfictions, and I generally stick to Spike/Buffy fics, or general.
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
I've never written fanfiction. When I write, I prefer to use my own characters, because that way, I don't have to worry about out-of-character issues.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Good plot that draws you in from the first few chapters, and good grammar and spelling.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Bad spelling/grammar, and over-characterisation mostly.
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
People who throw smut in for the sake of it, like it's the only way they can get people to read their work.
I never really got into reading Harry Potter fanfiction until after DH came out. I found it hard to find fics that were not entirely focused on romance. And I think that was the problem when it came to the shipping wars we had pre-HBP. Some people who supported specific relationships and read fics based on those relationships got entirely to washed up in the whole thing, and got far too attached to their OTP. There's more to Harry Potter than romance, and it was never a major focus of the books.
Now that the series is finished, I don't mind it as much as I did, but I tend avoid fics involving more romance unless they have been highly recommended for having a really good plot as well.
Animagi Girl April 25th, 2008, 9:15 pm Questionaire:
A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
d) Other (explain)
Well, I'll read any of these. The Marauder Era used to be my preferred era to read, but I do read anything. Especially since my two OTPs are Lily/James and Remus/Tonks. But I don't read as much next generation stuff.
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
b) Alternate Universe
c) Other
Alternate universes are my favorites. The majority of stories I read are alternate universes.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
e) Other
All, basically. I write a lot of romance-centered stories, but I really like reading general stories. I hate it when I'm reading a really good alternate universe story and it gets ruined with a badly-placed pairing.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
I think one of the most important things, to me anyway, is good grammar. I don't care how good or original the plot is, I won't read a story if the grammar is completely atrocious. A few mistakes here and there are fine, but I can't stand it when people don't proofread and edit. It's like they don't care enough about their story to use spellcheck or find a beta. If they don't care, why should I? Originality is fairly important when looking for stories. But I do let it slide a little in the Harry Potter fandom where there is so much stuff out there already, it's hard to find something that is truly and completely original. And, of course, none of it is technically original because it's all fan fiction.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
I hate to see Peter Pettigrew portrayed as a completely evil 15-year-old or is too scared of his own shadow to say anything worthwhile or original. And I especially hate it when authors say something like this in their author's note: "Well, I hate Pettigrew so I'm just not going to include him in the story at all." That drives me crazy. I understand that people don't like the character (I don't really like him either), but ignoring him altogether is completely ridiculous in my opinion. Unless, someone was going to write an AU where Pettigrew hadn't been born and how that would have affected the Marauders. That I would read.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yes, I have. Two completed chaptered fics. Two in-progress chaptered stories. Four one-shots. And several incompleted ideas scribbled in various notebooks and word documents.
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
I've written Rent, Charmed, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Supernatural, and Gilmore Girls. I'm also plotting out a Series of Unfortunate Events story, but I don't know I'll ever actually write it.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Again, good grammar is one of the most important things.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Er... Bad grammar. I hate it when people put author's notes in the middle of a story too. And I'm not a big fan of incestuous pairings, especially when the dominate the fandom (i.e. Wincest in Supernatural).
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Other than what I've already listed above? Nothing immediately comes to mind
DeathlyH April 25th, 2008, 9:56 pm I love reading fan-fiction. I'm addicted to it all, although I avoid Snape-centered fanfics because I just can't stand him! :argh: Oh well. Yeah, I miss the Harry Potter world a ton, and ever since DH was released, I have been craving it. It's like an extension of the world Jo has created (although no ff will ever equal her wokr. :p). I've never actually written some myself, though. I love to write, but I find I like it more when it is about people, places, and events who are my own creations, that way I'm not restricted on what can happen. I am a reader, not a writer of fan-fiction. I prefer just to stick to normal fiction for that. :)
pinkShark April 30th, 2008, 9:38 pm A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
I like Marauder Era alot, and well written Next Generations. Unless it's a missing moment, or about a minor character and canon compliant, I don't like Hogwarts Era ones, it just seems wrong. But I do love missing moments!
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
I won't read anything AU, I just can't get into it. The only exception I make is for 'After the End' and that's because I just pretend it happened after book seven (give or take a couple of bits).
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
I like them like my movies really, romantic comedies. A little bit of action is alright, but I don't like angsty dark stuff.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Well written, good characterisation, has ships I like, complies with canon and is funny as well. Fussy? Me? Nooo.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Bad writing makes me want to throw bricks, as do ships that I don't like. Spelling is quite important, but not the be all and end all, but characterisation is!
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
No, but I've got some ideas buzzing in my brain :)
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
I don't write any fanfic, but some Twilight is okay to read.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Pretty much the same as Harry Potter, good writing and characterisation.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Again, same as Harry Potter, bad writing, bad ships, bad characters.
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
As soon as the word 'Mione is said by anybody, I scream, exit the site, and clean my poor computer screen.
-------------------------------------
gipro2003 April 30th, 2008, 10:11 pm I am not a fan-fiction fan at all, just because I can never get myself interested in any of the stories, HP related or not. Not to say that I dont agree with writing fan-ficiton or anything, it just doesnt interest me. Its a great way for people to add their own aspects and perspectives to already exisitng ideas though. Writing fan-fiction takes alot of hard-work and patience, which is very admirable.
I have tried to try HP fanfiction once, several years ago. I got about two lines and and quit. Obviously it just doesnt suit me.
DeliciousMoon May 2nd, 2008, 5:17 am What type do you generally like to read?
Lily/James is what I read most. I just love them. I also love ones more centred around the Marauders, especially James and Sirius. However it is extremely difficult to find a canon compliant one with no out of characterness.
What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Romance for Lily/James. I also like reading a bit of James angst (though well written angst tends to be rare for James in my experience). I'm also dying to read some good action fics that show Lily and James defying Voldemort those three times. I like well written comedies (Dung Detention on Fanfiction.net for any marauder fans). James/Lily fluff is always good too
What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Well written, characters that are canon compliant, has the ships I actually ship, and makes me actually feel something while reading. There are also certain storylines I sometimes look for (like a pregnant Lily, or Lily/James pre dating, or post marriage, etc.. - it depends on my mood).
What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Bad characterisation is my biggest pet peeve by far. If I read a passage where Lily is screaming at James for something stupid and throwing books at him, I stop reading. Constant grammer and spelling errors are annoying as well. I don't like reading about ships I don't like as well, but that's obvious :p
Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yeah.. years ago. I don't like it now :p Right now I just have plot bunnies that I never plan to write down.
Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Loads. Bookworm!Lily, uptight Lily who never breaks rules, Lily who constantly screams at James, Lily who throws books at James, Lily who's obsessed with perfect grades, James who's obsessed with Lily, James who constantly asks Lily out, despite the rejection, bookworm!Remus, a Remus smarter than Sirius and James, non existant Peter -
- basically anything I consider out of character :p

3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Mary-Sues and bad grammar.
Dandinigirl13 May 17th, 2008, 10:29 am Questionaire:
A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
Mainly marauder era, but I like any as long as it flows well.
2. What do you like better?
I really don't mind if a story does not stick to the plot line intended, because it gives the writer a chance to use their own imagination instead of somone else's, even though JK's is amazing.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
I like a bit of everything, really. Especially a bit of action, I like mystery in fiction, too.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Excellent writing and clever plots!
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Unrealistic ships, and fanfiction that is based purley on the romance and has nothing else to it. Though, there are a select few who get away with doing this. ;)
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yes, I'm still writing it now. (Thora Jinks) But it is my first fan-fiction.
B) General Fan-Fiction:
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
Haven't written any, but trying an Inheritance cycle (Eragon, Eldest) fan-fic would be really cool!
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Same, a very good plotline.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Rubbish plotline and characters who aren't in character. :grumble:
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
YES. Boring plotlines and Mary-sue's. I really HATE bad grammar and spelling.
but the worst crime of all to me: NO DESCRIPTION. grr :(
hplova15165 May 21st, 2008, 2:14 am “Well?” she demanded.
Good quote, very funny, but WOAH! That sounds exactly like part of the Twilight series! Stated on the characters who read Romeo and Juliet! Edward was watching Romeo and Juliet, the movie, with Bella, and she absolutely loves this movie. She has a slight crush on Romeo. And when she asks him if he likes it, he says he thought Romeo was stupid because he immediately switches girls because of their looks!
If anyone can find that direct quote from the book, I'd be happy to see it. I'm searching for it now... *flips through pages*
Spirit May 21st, 2008, 6:16 am 1. What type do you generally like to read?
I don't really read fanfiction by their time eras. I tend to read them based on the main characters in the stories. I like to read fan fictions about Snape, Lily, Dumbledore, and the future generations. So I suppose it's a, c, and d.
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
AUs annoy me. I like to stick with canon.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
Those two are the ones I read most. I sometimes read comedies though, but I've found a lot of them aren't funny.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Correct grammar, something that doesn't become too AU, and a plot. I like it when the characters are as accurate as possible, though I can understand that that's often hard to do.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Incorrect grammar, terrible characterization, and anything that's way too AU. I also hate it when people write extremely short chapters and you have to keep constantly clicking. I just don't even bother with those anymore.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Heh, I'm afraid to say I have and still am, despite my best judgement. I usually write the most when I have a lot of free time on my hands.
-----------------
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
I've only attempted Harry Potter because that's the story I know best. I don't want to write anything innacurate or anything with completely wrong characterization, so I don't write about the things I don't know as much about.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
The same things I like to see in Harry Potter fan fiction, really.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Same stuff as in the Harry Potter fan fiction.
-------------------------------------
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Incorrect grammar is my number one pet peeve. If a story was completely stupid, but it was written in correct grammar, I wouldn't have a grudge. But incorrect grammar makes me tick like nothing else. In fact, it's my number one pet peeve outside of fan fiction land and in the real world as well.
Just a question for others who may know. HP fanfic confused me about this point: Is Blaise Zabini a girl or a boy?
I believe Blaise is a boy, although I always imagined him as a girl. I think I recall learning he was a boy a long time ago and I was surprised.
leah49 May 23rd, 2008, 1:34 am A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
(I like all of them, but b the most)
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Interesting themes, good writing, keeping up with canon, nothing that seems too far out.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
The Wizards being too Muggle or too American
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yes. *taps siggy*
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
I've written fanfic for Degrassi. It depends on whatever I'm fanning that day.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Good plots, uniqueness, pretty much the same as what I wrote for HP.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Immaturity, sex and all that junk
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
I hate slash. I also dislike it when people use terms like "orbs" to describe eyes. Come on, you don't do that in real life so why in a fanfic?
Yeah, I miss the Harry Potter world a ton, and ever since DH was released, I have been craving it. It's like an extension of the world Jo has created (although no ff will ever equal her wokr. :p).
That's how I feel. I like fanfiction because it keeps the characters alive.
ChingChuan May 24th, 2008, 4:17 pm I have tried to try HP fanfiction once, several years ago. I got about two lines and and quit. Obviously it just doesnt suit me.
Are you sure you read a well-written story? Of course, it's possible that you just don't like it, but most people I know, thought it wasn't for them because they encountered a very badly written story and thought all fanfiction was like that... On fanfiction.net alone, there are loads of stories with grammar/spelling mistakes or plots that don't show any quality. Of course, there are also loads of well-written stories that might rival the original series in quality, but as the Harry Potter fandom is one of the biggest, it's also harder to find the gems...
Which is the reason that I sort of quit reading fanfiction, because it took way too much time to find nice stories to read. I started reading fanfiction in 2004 and then the fandom was a lot smaller than it's now - there were only 33 pages of stories counting +100K words, so it was easier to find the nice ones ;).
Usually, I look at the number of words - most stories with more than 100K words used to be well-written and well thought out - and I don't read anything with less than 1000 reviews anymore. There's just too much junk out there...
A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
The story doesn't have to be set in the Hogwarts years, but I like it when it's about Harry & co, yes ;). There is an exception, however - I also like to read about Severus Snape.
2. What do you like better?
b) Alternate Universe
I already know what JKR wrote... I like to know what others can make of it, using the same setting. I like 'normal' AU's (in which, for instance, Sirius didn't die or something) but I also like 'real' AU's - in which it takes place in a whole other universe (like Harry going back in time etc.)
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
e) Other
I'm not sure whether it's allowed to discuss such things here - I apologize in advance if it's not and I don't mind the following paragraph being deleted at all
Angst. Well-written angst that isn't over the top. That's a pity - the cliches like Harry being tortured by Voldemort or being abused by Vernon are being re-used again and again and almost all stories dealing with angst that are written now, are not of the quality that they used to be.
For instance, I found a promising looking story featuring Harry and Snape - Harry was captured by Voldemort and being tortured, and Snape was going to rescue him. Well, I was a bit disgusted at the lack of effort that was put into the story - Harry trusted Snape immediately, while that isn't realistic at all. Also, some authors seem to think that, as long as they put lots of horrific scenes in their story, it's a good story - which, of course, isn't true.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Uhm... Realistic characterization or something... It has to be well written, but I don't really know what well-written means for me... Usually, it means that the story is quite long and that the author really put an effort in creating his plot. It's like... In my opinion, an author should approach their story like a real story, they should write it like it's a book, because then they'll care about quality. Or something.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
The things I described above... Also, there are many 'excesses'. Everyone who knows a bit of Harry Potter fanfiction, will understand what I mean. I think there are limits to what you can do with characters.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
I've written one story in Dutch - it was a bit of a self-insert. I still like the idea though, but I'm not going to finish it. (It was 65k ;)).
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter
None ;).
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
The same amount of quality that I see in some HP fanfiction. There are so many genres and types of stories to pick from, writers put in a real effort for their story... I'd like to see that in other fandoms as well.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
The lack of quality I described above :P.
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
The excessed I mentioned... Also, I don't like slash, but not all writers care about putting a warning on their stories. It's horrible to start reading a very promising story and then realizing that it's slash...
Moriath May 24th, 2008, 10:06 pm Usually, I look at the number of words - most stories with more than 100K words used to be well-written and well thought out - and I don't read anything with less than 1000 reviews anymore. There's just too much junk out there...
I found that this approach doesn't work anymore either. I came across too many stories with tons of reviews, in which people were only chatting or begging the writer to not end the story with a forced cliffhanger.
Dandinigirl13 May 30th, 2008, 11:40 pm I found that this approach doesn't work anymore either. I came across too many stories with tons of reviews, in which people were only chatting or begging the writer to not end the story with a forced cliffhanger.
I tend to look for a fanfiction with less reviews. If a fic hasn't got many reviews, it doesn't mean it's bad, it just means it hasn't got many reviews.
I tried a fic with LOTS of reviews and there was all this hype over it, and then it just completley didn't capture me. So not all popular fics are going to be better than the ones without reviews.
Then again, I'll give anything a chance. ;)
fattoad May 30th, 2008, 11:45 pm Yeah, sometimes the ones with less reviews are good too. :)
But they have to have a good summary...Otherwise I don't bother reading them.
Beatifically June 6th, 2008, 5:11 am A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)
I love reading the Marauder era. I can only read oneshots of other eras. I can't read any fanfiction with the trio without getting irritated because I always spot authors making them OOC. Even the few good ones I've read do this. I also read the Marauder era because it's so mysterious and there's more room for imagining things. Anything goes.
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
I like things that are canon. I can't read fanfictions written before the latest book came out without getting irritated. I'm really picky when it comes to fanfiction. I rarely can enjoy AU. I once read one that had Harry go back in time to the Marauder era and it was disgusting, as in I was nauseated. I won't say what it is, though - it's not family friendly.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
e) Other
I like all of them. I like reading General (which is usually fanfiction depicting the Marauder's years), romance (Lily/James!), action (which is rarely done well in fanfiction, but oh well, it's my favorite genre in books), comedy (Marauders are perfect for this!) and other. Other is dark/angsty which is really enjoyable to read when I'm in the mood for an intense fanfiction.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Good grammar/spelling, a unique plot, a story that doesn't clash with what is canon, and characters that are in character. If it doesn't sound like a lot, it is because I'm very picky.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Everything I said above. ;)
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yep. I've never finished one fanfiction, though. Now that summer is here, I think I will. *crosses fingers*
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
I won't answer any of these questions because I've never been satisfied with fanfiction outside the HP fandom.
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
A lot. Marauderettes, cliches, poor grammar and spelling, OOC, and anything outside of canon. I could write five pages on this, but it'll take forever and I don't want to bore anyone with it.
Dandinigirl13 June 10th, 2008, 5:12 pm 1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
A lot. Marauderettes, cliches, poor grammar and spelling, OOC, and anything outside of canon. I could write five pages on this, but it'll take forever and I don't want to bore anyone with it.
Totally. I hate cliches and poor spelling and grammar!
Now, this may seem odd to you guys but out of canon stuff doesn't bother me. I dunno why...
It's just, it's their fanfiction, they can do whatever they like with the world they're using. No matter how many people write the fanfics it will never rival JKR's stuff in any way, so I see it as an opportunity for an author to mould the world they're writing about to adjust it into their own plotline. It should'nt be such a big deal imo...
But JKR will never be rivalled by a fic! :D
The only thing that I see as going a bit too far in the 'out of canon' area would to have say, Harry in the marauders era or something...'cause that's slightly impossible. If a person was alive in that time period I don't see it as annyoing or there's anything wrong with 'tweaking' it a bit.. :D ..it's not real, after all. :D
maybe I'm just mad, huh?
OOC? Is that original characters? I don't mind them either... I perfer the author to have introduced something new to the world. But then again it's a matter of opinion...
I HATE it when fics or stories have no description, though... :(
Drusilla September 2nd, 2008, 4:52 pm I like reading well-written fanfics, but what kind (romance, comedy etc) I enjoy also depends on what the book/movie/TV show the fanfic was based on, was in the first place.
As far as HP fanfics go, I really like 'missing moments' fics of any kind (comic, drama, romantic etc) and funny ones. And I like some Marauder-era fanfics. There's not too much else I can read, really.
I do read fanfics based on other series, but the only criterion I go by there is that they should be well-written. Good grammar, careful spelling and keeping in character are a must.
RemusLupinFan September 2nd, 2008, 6:51 pm A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era)
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
I read fan-fic on both of those eras. I don't ever read anything that's set in the next generation.
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
I basically stick to storyline fics, though I will read fics that are partially AU. It basically depends on how big a deviation from the storyline - if it's too different, then I won't read it. But if certain smaller details are different, I may read it. In general I like stories that are of canonical events, but are written from a different character's point of view; or stories that fill in some missing bit that we don't get to read about in canon.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
c) Action
I like mainly action/adventure type stories, though general friendship stories are nice too. Occasionally I'll read comedy, especially if it has to do with the Marauders being 'up to no good'. ;)
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
An interesting, well-written story that doesn't deviate too much from the original storyline; characters behaving like they do in the books - ie, no out-of-character characters; stories that focus on the main characters or characters that are favorites of mine.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Characters or storylines that deviate too much from the original; Mary Sues; stories with no plot; stories where very implausible things occur.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
No, I'm a terrible writer.
-----------------------------
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
Well, I don't like to write fan fic, but I'll read fics of other fandoms that I'm interested in.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Good grammar/spelling, characters and storylines that are relatively similar to the original (as I mentioned above), plots that are logical and interesting.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Poor spelling/grammar, unknown characters, basically the things I listed above for what I don't like to see in an HP fan fic.
-------------------------------------
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Basically all that I listed above in the "what do you not want to see in a fan fic".
Moriath September 2nd, 2008, 10:38 pm I do read fanfics based on other series, but the only criterion I go by there is that they should be well-written. Good grammar, careful spelling and keeping in character are a must.
That's one of my major requirements, too. That and the format. If I can't decipher the text because it's all in pink italics size 7 then I won't read it.
Beatifically September 3rd, 2008, 12:30 am Another thing I can't stand about fanfiction is summaries that say something along the lines of, "I suck at summaries but plz read this!!!" Or authors that say "I must have 110 reviews before I post another story."
Totally. I hate cliches and poor spelling and grammar!
Now, this may seem odd to you guys but out of canon stuff doesn't bother me. I dunno why...
It's just, it's their fanfiction, they can do whatever they like with the world they're using. It should'nt be such a big deal imo...
But JKR will never be rivalled by a fic! :D
I'm just so picky so I need things to be in canon. So I don't want to read about the Marauders having some unknown person as the Transfiguration professor when it's supposed to be McGonagall.
What bothers me most about going outside of canon is when the characters are OOC. It's the main reason why I avoid anything in the trio's era; they butcher the characters. I've been unfortunate to have read some stories describe Hermione as a seductive, materialistic person rather than who she is. I can't stand it.
That actually falls under another category of fanfiction - AU, Alternate Universe. I can handle reading AU, but I never read crossovers or anything that has my basic pet peeves (grammar, spelling, & characterization errors).
OOC? Is that original characters? I don't mind them either... I perfer the author to have introduced something new to the world. But then again it's a matter of opinion...
OOC means out of character. :)
DancingMaenid September 3rd, 2008, 11:33 pm I don't mind AUs, but I do prefer that they fit the story and make sense. The problem I'd have with a story about Harry being in the Mauraders is because Harry, being James's son, couldn't have been around then! And I wouldn't see much point to an AU where nothing at all was similar to canon, such as a story where Harry and Ron are lifeguards on a California beach and Hermione is a swimsuit model. On the other hand, it's plausible that Voldemort might have chosen to go after Neville instead of Harry or something along those lines.
kala_way September 3rd, 2008, 11:57 pm I don't mind AUs, but I do prefer that they fit the story and make sense. The problem I'd have with a story about Harry being in the Mauraders is because Harry, being James's son, couldn't have been around then! For me, if it's going to be AU I'm fine with it as long as it's stated. I like to know what I'm getting into. I don't care if someone likes Sirius and wants him to not be dead in their fic as long as they say something like "Sirius never died and was rescued from the curtain of death by Remus, woohhoo! on with the story" I just don't want to be reading along and suddenly Cedric is new Flying teacher.
Even super-AU is ok, though I don't read it very often. I've read some really interesting ones where the characters go to Germany or Australia or France or the US. Really I'm happy for people to try any sort of genre or subject as long as they bother to write a clear description, so I can decide if I want to read :)
Punctuation mistakes I can handle and even some amount of grammar mistakes, but using completely wrong words is what really annoys me. Using 'brake' instead of 'break' or 'wonder' instead of 'wander' or 'incite' instead or 'insight' In oneshots I just overlook it, but if you're going to write a long chaptered fic a good beta is a must!
RemusLupinFan September 4th, 2008, 1:31 am Punctuation mistakes I can handle and even some amount of grammar mistakes, but using completely wrong words is what really annoys me. Using 'brake' instead of 'break' or 'wonder' instead of 'wander' or 'incite' instead or 'insight' In oneshots I just overlook it, but if you're going to write a long chaptered fic a good beta is a must!Yes, that is quite annoying. I also get annoyed when there are no capitalizations and the wording/writing is sloppy. That's what usually causes me to stop reading right away. I don't read a whole lot of fan fic, so if I'm going to spend my time reading something, it had better be decent. After all, if the author didn't spend enough time to make the story good and edit it properly, I don't feel obligated to spend my time reading it!
Drusilla September 18th, 2008, 1:44 pm It's out-of-character actions and words that bug me more than other things, unless the story is very obviously a crack!fic or a parody of some kind. And the odd spelling slip-up can be forgiven, but demonstrating a total lack of knowledge of the rules of English is the fastest way to get me to stop reading in three lines.
I've written fanfic myself, and I know how tough it can be to ensure that a story flows the right way, but surely some effort is not too much to ask for?
PureBloodGirl March 25th, 2009, 11:31 pm 1. What type do you generally like to read?
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
2. What do you like better?
b) Alternate Universe
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
b) Romance
c) Action
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
A good story, of course. Something that is very original, but sticks to the basic story of Harry Potter.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Ideas being overused. People can overuse ideas for fan-fiction easily, but you've gotta put your mind and you entire imagination into an idea before you write it. Not just go off and steal someone's idea and try to make it your own.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
I've only written one.
-----------------------------
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
Except for Harry Potter, the only other fiction I've written fan-fiction for is Doctor Who.
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Same as the above. Something that is original, but sticks to the main plot of the original fiction.
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Same as the above. I also do not like to see too many spelling errors and punctuation mistakes. They annoy me very easily.

1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Look below...
It's out-of-character actions and words that bug me more than other things, unless the story is very obviously a crack!fic or a parody of some kind. I've written fanfic myself, and I know how tough it can be to ensure that a story flows the right way, but surely some effort is not too much to ask for?
I agree. It bothers me when I go onto fanfiction.net and there are these fan-fictions that do not whatsoever go along with the characters or even the fiction that they are writing about. If you are writing fan-fiction, you should at least stick to the original story, just a little. Especially with the original characters.
I can ignore grammatical errors if the story is really interesting, but if it's your typical not-so-original fan-fiction, I can't let it go. I am a perfectionist when it comes to reading and writing and if the writer cannot use a beta or look over their work at least two times, it becomes very bothersome.
Voldemorts8thHorcrux March 26th, 2009, 12:05 am A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
Voldemort love stories are always hilarious :D. I used to like Post DH but before Next Generation quite a bit too, but then they got rather boring.
2. What do you like better?
I like fanfiction that's unique but not quite alternate universe. Most of it has to be canon and it has to fit in and stick to what's in the books but still be creative at the same time.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
I'll read anything except serious romance where it's all lovey dovey, unless if it's voldy romance, in which case it's just funny :D
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Well, I like stuff that's generally well written, I don't mind a few spelling and grammar errors as long as it isn't too riddled with them. As mentioned above, stuff that's unique. I don't mind reading stuff that isn't British and has a more American flair as long as the characters are in character and there isn't too much that is out of the HP universe
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
I hate slash, where all the characters are out of whack, unless it's comedy. Alternate Universe usually bothers me too.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Only 2, one of which i'm pretty ashamed of now

B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
I only write Harry Potter fanfiction, but i suppose I wouldn't mind writing Dresden Files fanfiction sometime
2) What do you like to see in General Fan-Fiction?
Same that i like in HP fanfiction
3) What do you not like to see in General Fan-Fiction?

kala_way March 26th, 2009, 3:41 pm 10 reviews by tomorow night & i'll post the next chapter. just be ware; i love cliff-hangers. :grumble:
That's an actual quote from someones author's note! Makes me want to slap them upside the head.
Threatening your readers, poor spelling, no capitalization, using incorrect words, using symbols instead of words, bad punctuation, not to mention believing "cliff-hanger" means cutting a scene off right in the middle. I couldn't have made up a better example myself!
Voldemorts8thHorcrux March 27th, 2009, 7:50 pm thta's just dumb :grumble:. Asking for reviews is one thing but "threatening" readers is just stupid....
Vig May 1st, 2009, 7:18 am There are some fanfictions that really get to my nerves because of it's random treatment of the characters and has no storyline as such.
I generally don't like crossover fanfictions unless they are written well and is not silly. One of my main considerations is characterization and if that ain't good then nothing else matters.

Romance is my top, but I also enjoy comedy, or anything else as long it's well- written.

5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Slash that's not written into the books.

LoonyForMoony October 13th, 2009, 9:35 pm Fan-fiction is just "one of those things".
It can be awesome; sitting down to read a well-written, insightful, imaginative fan-fiction is one of my favorite ways to while away a rainy day. However, sadly, such fics are sometimes hard to come by. There are days where I will sit down at one or the other popular site and, browsing for half an hour, find nothing but stories which distort and pervert Rowling's world and characters; sometimes in ways that honestly disturb me.
You'd think that with the thousands of fan authors out there, there would be enough fresh imagination to keep fan-fiction from developing cliches or becoming repetitive. However, that is sadly not the case. While some writers and nothing short of brilliant, far too many just go along with the cliches which have developed around many of Rowling's characters. If you've noticed and been annoyed by any of these things, here's the place to share your thoughts! :)
1. Which characters do you think have been most distorted/stereotyped by fanfiction? In what ways?
2. Has fanfiction ever altered your perception of an event or character? If so, are you fine with that, or do you wish that you had retained what you imagined originally?
3. What are some other advantages/disadvantages of fanfiction?
For instance, from what I've seen, I would say Dumbledore has been distorted the most. In a vast majority of fics that I've read, he is portrayed either as a despicable, manipulative, heartless old man, or as a moron who does nothing but "twinkle" and offer people lemon drops. Both depictions are sadly far from Rowling's pivotal character, and I am always depressed after seeing such a portrayal of him. As for Severus; sometimes I have a hard time finding the greasy, snarky, unpleasant man of canon in the handsome, kind, chivalrous, debonair bachelor that fanfics tend to make of him.
Another pet peeve of mine is the common portrayal of the trio. Harry is typically depicted as a useless third wheel, while Ron is a gluttonous pig who never does anything useful. (Both invariable leave off the first three letter's of Hermione's name when they address her, something that bugs me beyond all reason.) Hermione herself is changed too; the sharp, bossy, bushy haired, buck-toothed schoolgirl is lost beneath the swoony, auburn-curled, curvaceous, stereotypical heroine of fanon.
Those are my major peeves; there are others, but those are the ones that I think are most prevalent and annoy me the most. (Actually, slash is probably what bugs me the most, that that's a completely different topic. :) ) Anyway, I'm interested to hear people's thoughts!

4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Couples. (I especially like slash)
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Characters who are out of character. Like, if it's an Original character/Harry pairing, Ginny is portrayed as a vindictive, bitter and jealous ***** who wants to kill everyone. I don't like Ginny that much and I know she's not going to be all over Harry's girlfriend in the fic, but must she be that out of character?
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Oh yeah. I wrote a crossover between the Teen Titans and Harry Potter. I wrote a couple of Remus/Sirius slash and stuff like that.

OH MY GOSH! I've read so many Dumbledore fics that are EXACTLY like this description like this. Dumbledore is one of my favorite characters to mess with because there's so much to work with. Although I'm kind of a hypocrite because in my fic Dumbledore knits, has a Furby, and has Barbies X'DD I'm surprised nobody has bashed me for it yet; oddly, they've all complimented on my "unique" characterization
I know most people don't like to read OCs because they oftentimes turn out like Mary Sues, but I still like reading OC based fanfics -- because even Mary Sues can be a good read if the writing is good enough, and it's quite satisfying to stumble upon a well-developed, flawed OC.

Actually it really depends on the quality of the story.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General

e) Other
Comedy or Romance. Or both. However, I do like really intense stuff like Draco/Harry slash--it's usually awful, but hey, fanfiction isn't good most of the time.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Charcters that are IN CHARACTER. I cannot STAND OOC--especially when it's Snape or Hermione (my favorite characters.)
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Original Characters and romances that include a. incest b. a huge age gap or c. nonsense like Snape/anyone but Lily. *headdesk* *chants* He only loved her he only loved her he ony loved her.....
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yeah, loads. Mostly Snape/Lily, draco/Harry, or Marauder's Era comedy. Oh, and I have a series of Next Generation stories that are actually really good. *is surprised at quality of actual fanfiction*

I love writing Dumbledore. When he's really in the pocket as a character he's so fun, deep and crazy. But crack fics that make him just stupid are better in my estimation than those that make him some crazed evil dictator.
I know most people don't like to read OCs because they oftentimes turn out like Mary Sues, but I still like reading OC based fanfics -- because even Mary Sues can be a good read if the writing is good enough, and it's quite satisfying to stumble upon a well-developed, flawed OC.

I only have a problem with OC's when they're primary characters. Jennifer transferred from Salem Institute of America and joined Gryffindor and is suddenly besties with the trio, oh wait, make that quartet ha ha ha .... no.
Necessary plot OC's, like new house elves at Malfoy Manor or shopkeepers that aren't canon from Diagon Alley, etc. Those don't bother me at all, as long as they're convincingly done.

Other. :)
I like Fanfiction that tells a story about the past of a certain character, i.e A story about young Tom Riddle, Mcgonagall, Hermione, etc.
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
b) Alternate Universe
c) Other
A) & B)
I'd read Alternate Universe if it's main aim is comedy, and not changing things in canon merely because we didn'tlike them.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
e) Other
I'd rather it included bits of everything. But as said above, if it's AU, I'd like it to be comedy.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Details about characters we never go from the books. I usually have a picture in my mind for each character, but it's interesting to see what other people think about those characers.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Hmm, it's true that I don't like to see the characters acting OOC, but still I don't like to see them repeating lines from the books. Flexibility according to the situations, while sticking to the character's character is the best thing.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Never a whole one. I wrote some one-shots for various contests, though.

2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended)
b) Alternate Universe
I don't mind either, but the AU can't be too out there - mainly for comedic reasons.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
d) Comedy
I'm not too picky, but I do like the comedy ones the most, although a decent one is hard to find.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Believability (in the characters actions and what is going around them) and canon (to an extent) and if it's 'fanon', it has to be IN character (Hermione doesn't suddenly move to America and 'gets hot' and catches Harry's eye )
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Incest, manip!Dumbledore, Weasley bashing (I like H/Hr fics and I see a lot of Weasley bashing in them and I cannot stand it - Ron is NOT abusive and Ginny is NOT promiscuous), adult/child character pairings, OOC, 'Americanisms', crossovers, crack!fics, summaries of the story that says stuff like "plz read, - sucky summary but story is better!!!1!' (this guarantees that I won't read), authors who whine and threaten readers because their lack of reviews - and my least favorite: Mary-Sues:scared:
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yes, a few, for fun :)
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Bad grammar and spelling (at least get the character's name right! If someone can't spell 'Hermione', I stop reading ). Also, Mary-Sues  - these 3 top my list

asdfasdf17 August 12th, 2012, 8:33 pm I really used to be into fanfic but its been forever since I've read one. Anyhow, here's what I preferred:
A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Marauder-Era (Marauders and Lily's era): It had most of my favorite characters in it!
b) Hogwarts Era (Harry and Co. In Hogwarts)
c) Next-Generation (Future Generations of kids)
d) Other (explain)
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction (Sticks to the storyline JK Rowling herself intended): I like these types of fanfics because soemtimes they give an explanation for something that perhaps J.K Rowling herself didn't go too in depth with (like what was James/Lily's first date like?)
b) Alternate Universe: I always used to wonder (and I still do) how the HP story could have been different if this or that was different (like... what if Sirius was in Slytherin?). So for me, the AU fanfics kind of answered that question
c) Other
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
a) General
b) Romance
c) Action
d) Comedy
e) Other
I used to read so many of them!
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Something that was well written, with good grammar and spelling. I also liked an appealing story-line; something original. I'll admit, I did have a tendency to mainly read fanfics that were popular/had many views because I figured they would be the best (I bet I was wrong).
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Okay, I was picky! I didn't like OOC (out-of-character characters). I didn't like to read a poorly written/planned out fanfic or anything with too much 'fluff'. For some reason, I could never stand a fanfic that had 'the fifth marauder'. Mary Sues really got on my nerves (especially if the MS was the love interest). One thing I never minded though was OCs.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
So... I attempted to write one in my notebook but it was lame and didn't go anywhere and my writing was the epitome of amateur (it still is lol) so I never posted it.

Disturbing pairings *ahem* snape/hermione what *ahem*, out-of character personalities.

No idea who you are...But I LOVE YOU!
I second that! Heck, I might even read it!
A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
Marauder-Era exclusively. Harry's generation holds no interest for me outside the books, I really don't care to read about wilding ships or how Neville goes on to be the most well loved herbology professor in the history of the school. I also don't care about "the next generation" as, sadly, I find that next gen stories are more often than not Harry's story over again with slight tweaks here and there.
I like the marauder era the most because there's the opportunity to work within the framework of established canon and with known and loved characters, but you can also delve into their psychology and how they ended up making the choices that they made. I like the idea of messing with our notions of who was good and who was bad, for example Sirius is a "good" character in canon but I love the idea of turning that idea on its head in his time at Hogwarts - yes, he fights for the "good" side but that doesn't mean he's not prejudiced or that he's completely accepting of everyone. Extrapolate that out to the other characters and I'm interested in reading that.
2. What do you like better?
For the most part I like storyline fanfic, ones that at least attempt to hold to canon, especially since I most enjoy reading marauder-era stuff.
3) What genre do you like in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
I'll take anything except pure romance :vomit: I'll read anything if it's got a gripping, interesting or creative story or has a plot that hooks me. The problem is that most of the fanfiction I come across doesn't have a tight plot, doesn't stick to a story and leave the extraneous stuff by the wayside because a lot of fanfic readers like the extraneous stuff. I prefer my fanfic to read more like professional novels than like meandering tales.
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Good story and good characterization.
If the story wanders or I can't figure out what the characters want I'll drop the fic. If the characters are cliched or oversimplified I'll drop the fic. I want originality and creativity, not off-the-shelf.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Cliches. Especially cliches predominant in the fanfiction world.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yes, but very few complete stories and they're not posted online anywhere. I write for myself as the pressure of posting online is too much for me if the story isn't complete.
B) General Fan-Fiction: (All other types of fan-fiction besides Harry Potter)
1) What stories do you like to write fan-fiction for? (Other than Harry Potter)
I used to write X-Files fanfic and enjoyed dabbling in Pirates of the Carribean fanfic, but mostly because I like the time period. BTW, Jack Sparrow is a very difficult character to get right!
C) Other Questions
1) Any Pet Peeves when it comes to fan-fiction?
Anytime anyone in a story calls Lily "Lily Flower". Puke.
Stories that perpetuate the idea that Lily hates James down to her bones.
Stories that perpetuate the idea that James followed Lily around intoning non-stop date requests.
Stories that characterize Lily as Hermione over again.
Stories that characterize Lily as a sex-crazed closet bad girl who can't resist toying with James (the wide-eyed, innocent victim of her schemes)
Stories that characterize James as the sexy, irresistable bad boy with a heart of gold.
Stories that have no plot.
Stories that present the reader with no story question that would be answered at the end; in other words, stories that give me no reason to keep reading.
Stories that don't end but just keep going on and on and on and on and on and on and on...
(If you're thinking this is a long list, it could be longer, it's just been a very long time since I could stomach fanfic and to be honest I've forgotten even more pet peeves than I have listed here.)

A. Harry Potter Fan-Fiction Questions
1. What type do you generally like to read?
a) Generally only read Marauder-Era fic where a character travels back in time. Its been awhile since then.
b) Hogwarts Era fics are a given.
c) I LOVE reading Next-Gen fics featuring Al through his years at Hogwarts, it's a pity these fics aren't really that popular.
d) Other-Founders Era, after Hogwarts before Next-Gen., RtB fics
2. What do you like better?
a) Storyline Fan-Fiction, I like this because all the characters stay in character, but there has to be some change to the plot.
b) Alternate Universe, depends on the AU.
c) Other, time travel!

b) Romance (YES)
c) Action (Kind of)
d) Comedy (not really, but not out of the question)
e) Other (Friendship, Adventure)
4) What do you particularly look for in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
A good story. A telling of a different story that wasn't in HP. Whether it be a different type of romance or adventure. I don't want a re-hash, but I don't want it to be completely different from the original story.
5) What do you not like to see in Harry Potter fan-fiction?
Bad spelling and grammar, OC, OOC, character bashing.
6) Have you written Harry Potter fan-fiction before?
Yes, but it was a short one-shot done out of boredom.
I do read other fanfics besides HP, but my answers for these (the general answers) and be said for the other fanfics I read.
LyannaS October 23rd, 2012, 11:24 pm I don't know if this has already been mentioned. Has anyone read a HP fan fic called Stealing Harry? Someone recommended it to me, it is available only on-line, I believe. I can't remember who wrote it, but it's a great story. Remus and Sirius take Harry away from the Dursleys when he's 9 and bring him up, except on the nights when Sirius turns into a werewolf, in which case they hand Harry over to... Snape to babysit. At those times, Snape brings him to Hogwarts as his "nephew", changing his appearance a bit. And because he doesn't look so much like James any more, Snape comes to actually care for him. For me reading that story was great fun. I recommend it. :)
Oops, should I have filled up the questionnaire before posting this? :hmm:
