I've already introduced my three in other threads here. But this thread is for dog stories, dog love, dog appreciation etc. You are also welcome to discuss the superiority of dogs in HP and my personal theory that making McGonagall a cat animagus was an early book mistake that JKR didn't catch in time.

My first word was dog to my mother's continued regret. We didn't have one at the time. We didn't get one until I was fifteen, got dumped by my first boyfriend and explained tearfully that a puppy would make all the hurt go away. Suckers. :D

:lol::lol::lol::lol: you're post was so funny! wish my first word was dog...well it was probably more like "horsey" cos that would have been more appropriate.

But i do totally agree that dogs are superior in every way to cats. They just rule! I've been around dogs all my life, growing up on a farm we had sheepdogs first, and then my dad began puppy walking for the Irish Guide Dogs association so we had labradors & retrievers as well. Apparently when i was small I used to run after strange dogs in the street which used to give my mum a heart attack!

I love your dogs by the way! they're so adorable! and i wonder if i can use that excuse to get a horse...although i wouldn't be able to use the first boyfriend excuse!

I'll be one of the first to jump on the bandwagon!! I love dogs, all dogs...and our lives revolve around many activities. They are part of our family and our lives here. I've had mixed, pures, rescues & shelter dogs, champions and working dogs. I loved each and everyone.

I sometimes write for various dog publications about my dogs--or make up stories. One dog in particular seems to act out stories just for me to put in writing. She is amazingly entertaining, clever, loving and somewhat mischievous. I present to you, Princess Sonnet--one of my Salukis:

Sonnet's Smile

I was puttering around the house this morning doing laundry, picking up, etc., while the boys were in the living room playing on their PlayStation. Don got a new game for his birthday this week. The next door neighbor boy, Brandon, was also over enjoying the game.

I'm strolling back from the dining room where I was folding clothes, back to the laundry room to replace the basket, and Sonnet, my nine month old puppy, caught my attention. She looked up at me from the kitchen floor and "smiled". However, it looked like she was wearing braces!

"What do you have, Sonnet?" I asked her, trying not to make her bolt. She looks up again and, indeed, there is a wire around her front teeth. She IS wearing braces which are making her lips pull back into a strange, comedic smile. I wish I had a camera with me.

"Sonnet...DROP IT!" I command. She turns and runs into the office (I hate when that happens). I follow, corner her and repeat, "Sonnet, DROP IT!" She smiles another perfect, wired smile again and then gives me that sad look. Sonnet then spits (phtooey) a red, white and blue, orthodontic retainer at my feet. My children don't wear retainers at this point, and I think of the boys' friend and head back out to where they are playing games.

"Is this your retainer, Brandon?" I ask.

"What?" He runs over to his jacket laying across the window seat.

"It's gone! I put it in my pocket!" Brandon wails as he comes over to see what I have.

"YES! That's mine! But...but...I put it in my pocket, I know I did! Where was it?"

"Sonnet was wearing it."

Brandon decided it would be best to go wash the retainer thoroughly before using it again (probably a wise move). Luckily, it was undamaged. We filled Brandon in on Saluki thievery and suggested, next time, he use a zipped pocket, or put it at least five feet above ground.

Now, it may be my imagination, but Sonnet's bite looks exceptionally straight today.

So one day I was sitting next to Rex, petting him, I look down at his leg, and "Rex!!! You're pink!!!!" Yes, my dog somehow managed to stain himself pink. We never found out how. When he ate a pen and it exploded on him so he was blue for 3 weeks, we knew what it was; when he stole a partly-full Gatorade bottle and was orage for few days, we knew why; when he chewed a marker and colored his nose green, we knew where it came from. But never did we find out how he bacame pink. It remains a mystery.

:rotfl: @ Sonnet! That is awesome!

I assume Rex is white? We laugh that Indy (and now Remy) stood in line for the scotch guard. Everything just comes right off their fur

Remy's new favorite toy is my arm. It's so convenient how I come with a built in toy to chew on.

Yep, he's white. I posted some pictures in the picture thread of him after he rolled around in some berries in our back yard. He was purple for a few days, now it's really more of a green.

And I hear you on the shedding. I tell Bosch I'm going to use her extra fur to clothe Ethiopia!

There is a woman on another site who has afghans and actually spins the fur into thread and makes sweaters and such out of it! I've not seen one of her sweaters yet, but I'm curious.

Maybe you should start collecting that fur and get yourself a spinning wheel

I've been wondering: Does anyone elses dog watch the T.V.??? I'm pretty sure Rex does. He can tell when dogs come on the screen, even if they make no noise. He somehow can tell, especially if they run or move in some other way, that it's a dog, without being shown or anything.. He then barks at it until whatever the dog was on leaves, because he apparently feels threatened that another dog is invading his territory.

He seems to get most the time when other dogs are on TV, evebn if they do no noise. He quietly snarls when a dog gets an operation in one of these pet doc TV series for instance.
He also has a melody always played as jingle during a comedy show he absolutely adores. No matter what he does, when this melody is played he jumps in front of the TV (Appenzell's have this odd way of jumping with all four legs the same time what looks kind like a big black white rubber ball... :rotfl:) and listens to it excitedly until it stops. Then continues to do whatever he did (chewing on my shoes for instance, inconspicuously tough - one dog can try to make it look like he was just licking when his humans pay attention).

I never saw a cat realizing TV programmes, so one more point for dog smartness!

I did have one cat, Whimpy, who used to try to catch football players as they ran across the screen. The dogs in the house far-outnumbered the responses, however.

Like your Appenzell, our Sahara (now past, may she rest in peace) used to jump up only when one particular commercial came on. It was a beer commercial. We used to joke about that a lot  It was probably the music, looking back...but was always funny when it happened.

Of the dogs I have now, there is only one who I've seen watch TV. That would be Dusty. He just quietly stares, usually when there's an interesting animal on.

The queen of canine television watching had to be Crickett (another pup past). Crickett watched TV all the time. We even made video tapes of her favorite shows to watch when we were out of the house.

Crickett's favorites were horse-racing and a dog-game show on Animal Planet they used to run called, "That's My Dog." The show usually had two families with their dogs contesting. Each family would have to get their dog to do certain tricks (bring tennis balls from a wading pool of balls, run back and forth to family members) within a certain time period.

Crickett knew the music to her TV show, and when it played--would run in and sit in front of the TV excitedly. When the starting bell played for the next trick, she would stand up and often do the four-legged "bounce" in front of the TV...barking for her contestant. When time was up, and the end bell rang, she would calmly sit back down quietly. When a commercial came up, she would briefly leave for a drink of water or potty break, and return to the TV as soon as the show came back on.

Now and then there would be a canine contestant she really seemed to like. She not only would bounce and cheer for him (bark), but she would lick the TV screen whenever a closeup of the dog would materialize. She would give him kisses!

We would keep a bottle of Windex and paper-towels close by. Really cute dogs could cause the screen to become quite a mess.

Cucumbers is an odd thing, I'm not sure I've had a dog that would eat them. That's a good topic, as well.

My dogs all love to eat carrots :). I started giving them to one of my pups who was overweight. I was told that dogs can't really break the cellulose in carrots down, so they just pass right through. But the bulk in the tummy makes them think they are getting treats.

Then, of course, if one dog is getting a carrot and crunching away on them, the others wanted to know why they weren't getting any, too. So now we have a big bag of carrots in the refridgerator at all times and all the dogs eat them. Strange, huh?

Cats would never be so easily pleased...another reason dogs are best

What do your dogs eat that you consider a bit strange?

Jessica
October 11th, 2007, 11:22 pm
Really? That's a good call on carrots. Indy loves anything crunchy so I'm sure he'd be in heaven. Bosch is all about the dog cookies but Indy lives for cuccumber, onion, lettuce, anything along those lines - particularly anything I've told him dogs don't like.

We don't know what Remy likes yet. He scoffs at cookies.

Rex eats, carrots, too. He loves them, which I've always found a bit strange.
(But better than eating whole sticks of butter.) Another of his favorites is Wheat Thins. He goes crazy over them. He knows the sound of the box, and comes running whenever we take it out of the cabinet, then sits and wags his tail until he gets one. Or if you're sitting, he comes and puts his chin on your leg, and looks up at you with puppy face. Also, he was injured a while ago, and had to take some medicine, so we tried hiding it in his food, but he would carefully avoid it, so the only way to get him to eat it was to hide the pill in a spoonfull of peanut butter. Soon he started avoiding them on purpose just to get the peanut butter. Too smart for his own good.

...Indy lives for cuccumber, onion, lettuce, anything along those lines...

Just be careful of the onions! There is something called "Heinz Anemia" that dogs can get from eating too many. A sliver or two in a stew won't do it, but a dog getting hold of a few, whole onions could do them harm.

Also, most know that Chocolate is toxic to dogs. Their livers can't process a chemical in it like our livers can...so the chemical in chocolate builds up. Even a little bit here and there and build until it makes a dog sick a few years down the line. Dark chocolate is the worst--white chocolate is not dangerous.

Raisins, also, have a toxic reaction in dogs when eaten in a large amount.

that's funny, we had a pure white labrador, unfortunately she had to be put to sleep in July as she was old and had tumours and basically her standard of living had deteriorated rapidly :(

but 9 years ago, my parents & I spent 2 months in Australia as my brother got married over here (i'm in Oz again at the moment) and when we got back, she had black spots on her back and hind legs! We didn't know how she got them until the man who had been caring for her, let us know that one day it got really hot, and new tarmac that had been put on the road had melted, so when he took her out for a walk she managed to roll in the tarmac and got covered in it! thankfully it wore off after a while :D

Speaking of dogs and chocolate, my grandpa's dog apparently has an iron stomach. She's a tiny little beagle, Toni, and is the typical beagle, loud, but an expert at the puppy face. So one day my uncle bought a bag of those Hershey's nuggets, and put them in his room to take to work, but Toni snuck in and took them. She ate the entire bag of chocolates, wrappers and all, and except for being a bit weird the next day, she was fine.

Redhart
October 12th, 2007, 3:16 am
Well, that's the thing about chocolate--sometimes your dog doesn't show the effects right away. Their liver stores it and they only get sick once it reaches a certain level. That can take years--or be one sitting (if it is a goodly amount of dark chocolate--which contains the highest percentage of theobromine, the chemical that is the actual threat within the chocolate).

Here is a link to a veterinary Q&A site explaining chocolate toxicity:
http://vetmedicine.about.com/cs/nutritiondogs/a/chocolatetoxici.htm

And...to keep this on topic, does this means dogs are not better than cats because they can't eat chocolate? Nooooooooooo! not at all! Chocolate is also toxic to kitties!!!!

Our old dog (the one I told about in Rescue pets) loved to eat apples. But no windfall - she picked it up from the tree by herself and then ate very carefully piece for piece (that took around 20 minutes and always looked kinf of odd for a German shepherd ).

The most exceptional our new dog ever ate (but this was an accident though) was around a litre of fat for the cheep fryer, which he took out of a pail which actually shouldn't have been reachable for him. Poor guy felt sick 24h.

Grapes are also not good for dogs.

Barney prefers cheese to apples, we learned that the other night. My roommate gave him a little piece of apple while I was grating some cheese. he spit it out and came over to me wagging his tail! :D
He will eat anything in the garden once he knows it's food, he started this summer with the sour cherries, and then moved on to the red currants, blueberries, blackberries, and has tried for the strawberries too.

Sandy is strange, she loves anything minty, like toothpaste or candy canes. But her all time favourite is fruitcake. She never had it until a few years ago. One of my roommates (he's crazy!) likes fruitcake. He put some on a plate, put it on the table, then got up to get a glass of milk. Within 15 seconds Sandy had jumped on the chair, then the table, and had gobbled down all the fruitcake! She still goes crazy for it every Christmas!

Our dogs don't notice the tv much, but Como, one of the shelties, used to be terrified of the bell on "Wheel of Fortune", so we could never watch it. :)
We have a big picture window looking into the backyard, Barney will lay down with his chin on the windowsill and watch squirrels. We call it his "squirrel tv".
Before she lost her hearing Sandy would bark anytime she heard a doorbell on tv. Barney only does if it sounds like our doorbell.
My roommate used to have "Funkytown" as the ringtone on her cell phone, Barney would run towards it every time it rang.

I have a Welsh Springer Spaniel called Tom. He's 11 in November and he's going pretty grey and deaf, but you wouldn't think he was an old dog when grandma comes round! He wags his tail so hard his whole back end moves!

My friend has a chocolate lab cross flat coated retriever called Harry (not Potter :p). His quirk is that he will pick up a stick (usually a large and heavy one) on his walk, carry it all the way back home and then drop it just outside the gate. He will then refuse to pick it up, but if you pick it up for him and deposit it just the other side of the gate, he picks it straight up.

They have a small collection of sticks in their garden.

Dogs are great! :D

Another reason dogs are better than cats: If a cat wanders away from home, good luck catching & returning it!
Today I returned another neighbor's dog who got loose. Lola is a bernese mountain dog puppy, and she's very wiggly and sweet. I hope they figure out how she got out of the fenced yard.
Previously, I have returned Austin & Bailey, the black cocker spaniel twins, and Kenzie, the great dane.
I'm getting pretty good at dog-catching! :D

I don't know if anyone else hates all the balls on the market as much as I do but in case I found a really good one. This (http://www.doggonegood.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=product.display&Product_ID=3945&ParentCat=162) is one I found at an indie pet store while visiting my mom. I like it because it's not solid, it doesn't squeek and it's not disgusting like tennis balls. I just ordered six

I refuse to buy the squeeky stuffed animals too so I usually just buy kid toys. Bosch likes realistic looking prey. And kid toys seem to last longer than dog toys.

8m57w6
October 16th, 2007, 4:09 am
Rex destroys pretty much everything we give him. Tennis balls are like nothing when he can out a hole into a metal soup can with his teeth. We couldn't find any dog toy that he wouldn't completely ruin in 2 weeks. But finally my dad found something that he has yet to destroy: Feild Hockey balls. They're the same size as tennis balls, but are really tough, so he can't chew them to bits. We've had them for over a year, and though they've been lost under the couches several times, he has yet to rip them to pieces. Plus they bounce, so if he drops it on the floor, it bounces back into his mouth, and he can thus amuse himself. And they're cheap and easy to find!

Question: Does anyone elses dog go insane over laser pointers?? Easy way to play when you're tired, and a great way to tire out my dog. (For at least 15 minutes, anyway.)

Colonel_Fubster
October 16th, 2007, 8:18 am
Barney destroys toys too, unless we tell him very clearly that it belongs to Sandy. Then he might play with it, but he won't shred it. :)
He's not really into balls, he likes toys that squeak, so we tried one made out of the same material as fire-hoses. They're supposed to be super-tough. It took him 10 minutes to make a hole in it. He loves tug toys too, but none of us humans are strong enough to really play properly. When we were dog-sitting Cassie, a lab, the two of them pretty much destroyed all the tug ropes we had, among other things.... :D

I am not sure what it is with dogs. But, there seems to be rules of the destruction of stuffed animals that must be followed.

First, the eyes and nose must go. Those are always the first. Apparently, the eyes must be chewed out first so that the stuffed animal can't see what the dog is going to do next.

Next--squeekies. If there is any noise making device within the stuffed toy, it must be chewed to and removed immediately. The noise must be of the utmost disdain to dogs as all my dogs have decided it must die. It is like the heart of the stuffed animal. Luckily, the hapless stuffed toy can not watch its own heart being ripped out because it now has no eyes.

Then, of course, the stuffing in next. Watching my dogs remove stuffing from a toy reminds me a human child removing packing from a Christmas present...tossing it all hither-tither into the air and letting it float down beside them as the seek the bottom of the box.

I am not sure what it is with stuffing, but this part does not only apply to stuffed toys but anything with a fluffy middle. I've woken up in the middle of the night to that "foof-foof-foof" sound as my usually adorable puppy girl is unstuffing an entire box of Kleenex all over the bedroom. One dog (Dusty) actually managed to figure out how zippers work and unzipped a cushion on our couch, excavating the contents of the fluffy cushion in tiny bits of foam rubber without damaging the upholstery. How thoughtful of him.

Then of course, you have the leftover carcasses. The day after Christmas around our house (because it seems all the children love to buy the dog a new toy for this holiday) looks like a deadly explosion at the stuffed zoo. There are eyeless and heartless, dead-stuffed animal carcasses everywhere amid the snowdrifts of fluffy stuffing.

I couldn't help but feel a bit sad for the small Cat-In-the-Hat as it swirled in macabre circles in the upstairs toilet, face down and eyeless. Non one should have to go that way. We rescued his lifeless, stuffless body and disposed of him with a little more respect.

There was also the large teddy-bear. It wasn't actually given to the dogs as a present, but to one of the younger boys. Unfortunately, the child had left the bear within the "hunting range" of the hounds.

A large, three foot teddy bear was discovered wedged in the doggie door downstairs, as if the opening were performing a grotesque birth, his eyes missing, and his arms outstretched as if still pleading for help. His legs on the other side of the door, however, were conspicuous by their absence.

I have good news, however. I found a stuffed toy they have not been able to destroy. They are called, "Big Brute" toys. I bought my first a year and a half ago. The woman guaranteed me that my dogs would not be able to destroy it. It looked like thick cloth, and I was skeptical. I told the woman I was skeptical as I had never met a stuffed animal/toy yet that could survive the onslaught of the pack. I purchased it and took it home--sure that soon a new carcass would join its predecessors before it. Low and behold, they could not.

It does not have any eyes, but does have a squeaky inside. It lives still--over a year later! The dogs still play with it and seem to love it. They steal the little guy from each other and squeak it...they TRY to rip it's little heart out, but just can get through this one's skin. I have since bought two more.

There is hope. Be strong.

:rotfl: The times that I've seen animals go that way... occasionally my own, but mom is always there to patch them up, if possible.

My bunny also has stuffed toys, that she enjoys sitting/laying next to, puching around, running with, etc., and when we go into her room, Rex can't help but come in and steal one of her toys. He's afully discreet about it, and would get away with it, except he can't fight the urge to squeak them as he's sneaking off. If it weren't for that squeak, they'd likely all be gonners.

WAHAHA! Doggies!
Love...doggies....

Haha! Just kidding. But I do adore dogs.

I have two chihuahuas, and they are such little sweeties, honestly. Well, sort of.
First, there's Cookie, who is as patient and loving and kind and considerate as any dog has a right to be. Believe it or not, she loves everyone. Chihuahuas aren't exactly famous for being overly friendly, but our little girl certainly breaks the mold. She's about 8-9 years old (we don't know exactly how old because we got her when she was already an adult).

Then...there's Daisy. Our little monster.
Our sweet, adoring little monster.
How can I say this nicely? Daisy is very...partial. She adores my mother and me, and she tolerates my brother, boyfriend, his mom, and my sisters (which is funny, because I rarely get to see the angel anymore, and my brother still lives with my mom).
She thinks she's six foot tall and 200 lbs. (she only weighs 6 lbs.), and she'll bark ferociously and fiercely at anyone she doesn't recognize... until, that is, they try to approach her. While her barking doesn't decrease, her courage does, and she'll run and hide - literally. Whether it's behind us or behind a very large piece of furniture.
When my roommate Krystal went home with me to spend the weekend with my family, Daisy was, of course, set off (Cookie was extremely excited and welcomed Krystal into our home with a wet tongue. She even slept with Krystal that night, though she did, apparently, steal the pillow more than once), and ran to the other end of the house, into my mother's bedroom, and under the bed.
When we noticed that she'd been gone for about half an hour, we started to get worried. I called her - no answer. My brother called her - nada. Krystal called her - and from the opposite end of the house, you could hear her start growling. Then angry barking. We all laughed so hard our faces hurt.
The funny thing about Daisy is that you can't take her seriously - she's all bark, no bite. She likes to threaten, but she's got nothing to back it up with.
Just a little dog with a very big mouth!

I have always had tons of animals, and during my life have known dozens of family dogs. My favorites, the closest to my heart, were always the German Shepherds. When I decided the kids were old enough for me to introduce a dog, we went to the local shelter (the dogs are listed on the internet)... but there were no German Shepherds besides one very vocal little puppy who seemed kind of aggressive considering his size. And then I saw Jack, the tri-color Australian Shepherd, who'd been slated for/saved from death row a few times by a shelter worker who had a soft spot for him and desperately wanted to see him adopted.

They had me at hello, or the cold-nosed equivalent.

He came home with us, and has been a thoroughly protective, neurotic, loud, puffy member of the family since then. He has learned that Nicodemus, the primary cat, outranks him. The other two cats and the dog sort of shuffle around after that. But I feel safe with him, and, aside from the fact that he tends to get overly excited and jump when the kids are active, and the fact that he tries to herd not only them but birds, airplanes, hot air baloons and butterflies back into proper position, he's a good dog.

Jack is obviously a wonderful boy, but I have to wonder about the process of herding a hot-air balloon....:err:

It was really nice out this afternoon when I got home from school, so I decided to do my homework on the back porch with Rex. After a while though, some storm coulds came, and it began to rain. Not very much, but enough to get my english homework wet. So I moved into the sun room, since it was easier to transfer all my things into that room through the sliding door, rather than though the other back door into the launrdy room. Then I needed a 3-hole puch, so I went looking for one, and when I came back, Rex was standing at the laundry room door, wanting to come in from the rain. It's not that far a walk from the sun room to the laundry room inside, but I was already in the sun room, so I opened that door, and called him in. He looked at me, confused, since he normally goes in the other way, then came in. So after he comes in the sun room, he walks to the laundry room door, to go outside!! I let him out, and he's fine!!

Ah, the door confusion syndrome. That happens here too! :D

Today Barney completely ignored me when I called him repeatedly to come in. Moments later I went into the kitchen and began doing dishes, keeping an eye on him through the window. When he saw me in the window he started wagging madly and ran to the door to come in. Then he was stuck to my leg for 5 minutes (Barnacle mode). Sometimes I just don't seem to know what's going on.....

My mom had a dog growing up that didn't realize that the back yard and front yard were connected. Whenever it wanted to get from back to front, or front to back, it would go through the house. Then one day, it was in back and walked around the side of the house, and *gasp* it was in the front!! Ah, discovery.

Day number 752
My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre little dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while I am forced to eat dry cereal. The only thing that keeps me going is the hope of escape, and the mild satisfaction I get from ruining the occasional piece of furniture. Tomorrow I may eat another houseplant.

Day number 761
Today my attempt to kill my captors by weaving around their feet while they were walking almost succeeded, must try this at the top of the stairs. In an attempt to disgust and repulse these vile oppressors, I once again induced myself to vomit on their favorite chair...must try this on their bed.

Day number 765
Decapitated a mouse and brought them the headless body, in attempt to make them aware of what I am capable of, and to try to strike fear into their hearts. They only cooed and condescended about what a good little cat I was...Hmmm. Not working according to plan.

Day number 768
I am finally aware of how sadistic they are. For no good reason I was chosen for the water torture. This time however it included a burning foamy chemical called "shampoo." What sick minds could invent such a liquid. My only consolation is the piece of thumb still stuck between my teeth.

Day number 771
There was some sort of gathering of their accomplices. I was placed in solitary throughout the event. However, I could hear the noise and smell the foul odor of the glass tubes they call "beer". More importantly I overheard that my confinement was due to MY power of "allergies." Must learn what this is and how to use it to my advantage.

Day number 774
I am convinced the other captives are flunkies and may be snitches. The dog is routinely released and seems more than happy to return. He is obviously a half-wit. The bird on the other hand has got to be an informant, and speaks with them regularly. I am certain he reports my every move. Due to his current placement in the metal room his safety is assured. But I can wait, escape and revenge will be mine......

I have a toy poodle named Barkley. :D He's 10 years old now, almost 11, but people think he's still a puppy sometimes. Toy poodles are a lot smaller that regular poodles. His favorite thing to do is snuggle with everyone. He's really patient, he used to let my little sister dress him up in doll's clothes and parade him around the house in a stroller. He's an "uncle" to my sister's puppies, who come over for play dates at least twice a week.

I used to have a toy poodle named Leonard, but he accidentally hung himself on a phone cord while we were out at dinner one night. :upset: He was a good dog tho, very protective of me and my sisters. He'd go crazy over squeaky toys!

My sister's puppies are a Maltese-poodle mix, so they are tiny, but they won't grow much bigger. They are very friendly, very curious, very loud, and very snuggly! :D My sister and bro-in-law bought them jackets to wear and Halloween costumes. (Pictures in the picture thread)

They aren't my dogs, but my cousin has 2 rottweilers that I always babysit along with their kids. They are 4 years old I think, and the sweetest things you could ever hope to meet! They are HUGE tho, so when they try to lie on my lap on the couch, it's somewhat uncomfortable.

I'm a sucker for puppies! I want three dogs to name them Padfoot, Moony, and Prongs (for him, I'd buy stuffed antlers and stick 'em on his head :D). I'm such a dork, but wouldn't that be adorable, having three little Marauders running around the house?

Anyways, I love both cats and dogs, and I can't choose between them. Maybe I'll get a ginger cat and name her Lily, to balance it off a bit. Haah. Little Prongs chasing after Lily...

I am a very lucky person. I have an old English Mastiff. She weighs 229lbs. She is my service dog. She helps me get up and keeps me from falling. I lean on her back to keep me steady. I have a bum right leg, without a kneecap. She is so smart. She knows where I am hurting. She takes care of me. She knows when I am about to fall before I do, and she will pin me against the wall. I love her so much. I can't help but think of Fang sometimes. She even gets along with the kitty.

I am sure it was all in love. To give you a huge hint about mastiffs, if they do not like you, they will lay down between you and the human they happened to think needs the most guarding. They will lay there, but you if get closer or say something they do not like, you will see and hear a growl , possibly a bark you will never forget. I am a firm believer if my dog does not like you, then you can forget any business ever between us, and you will never be invited over.
Mastiffs were raised in castles to watch after the children. Quite like Nanna of Alice in Wonderland. I have seen more than one mastiff sitting on an unruly kid. It is quite hilarous. I still don't know quite how they manage to do that without hurting them.

Okay Remy and I just had the funniest walk ever. So we usually go this one way and do the same route every day but today the gate to the Paramount car lot (this lot where they keep all the cars they use in movies) was open and the two dogs inside were right there. And they hate Remy so I didn't trust him walking by an open gate in front of them. We turned around and so I decided to do a different route.

So we're walking down this new street and somebody has this pallet in their backyard and Remy is terrified of it. Literally he won't move because he's so scared of this thing (a pallet is just like a wooden platform for the foreigners). Meanwhile there's a dog across the street that's loose that he hasn't seen because he's so scared of this stupid pallet.

The dog crosses the street to see us. He's about Remy size but thicker. They sniff each other and then Remy growls and the other dog backs off. I'm chanting a mantra of "it's okay Remy, it's okay," We keep walking. The other dog starts following us. Then a little chihauhua crosses the street and starts following us too.

I make Remy sit and the little chihauhua comes over and they sniff butts etc. Remy is terrified of the little chihuahua too. Then both dogs follow us for literally fifteen minutes. We were like a three dog parade the whole time. Me and Remy in front, then the chihuahua then the bigger dog. It was the funniest thing you ever saw. I took a pic with my cell phone but the stupid thing isn't sending it to my gmail for some reason.

I did a loop so we'd end up back where we found them and when we got back there the bigger one just went back into his yard. Then he and Remy sniffed each other again and finally Remy decided he was cool. So then he strutted the whole rest of the way because he had been brave with two boy dogs.

They met at the dog park and my brother offered a lift home one night because it was raining, but after that her dogs just assumed that they would be getting a lift home every night from him. Apparently they dragged Sarah towards Aidan's car a few times! I think they even tried to leave with Aidan as well before Sarah was ready to go! Oh, what a cute story!!

My dog isn't afraid of much, but he doesn't like motorcycles or the dark at all. He barks everytime a motorcycle goes past the house, and when my dad or brother start theirs, he get very anxious. He's also not a big fan of thunder. With the dark, I think he's more just wathcing out for us. There ave been times early in the morning or late at night when it's dark where he'll refuse to go into a room, then block one of us with his body from going in until we turn on a light. He also does this whenever someone new comes around that he is unsure about. However it's mostly to my mom and I, probably because we're the females, and I'm youngest.

My brother's dog Samson is a Rottweiler x Burmese Mountain dog. He's 70kgs and is scared of joggers, bicycles, skateboards, punks (I'm serious - one night that we were walking him he tried to go for this kid who was dressed in punk gear!) and he doesn't like small dogs!!! Try walking him and holding him back from something! My brother's girlfriends dog Rex is 11 and he's terrified of thunder & lightning. Any time there is a storm he sleeps in their walk in closet as it's the darkest room in the house!

I'm so excited!
I got a new doggie today! My friend and I went to the pound "just to look," and we saw her being picked on by the bigger dogs. when the guard picked her up and moved her out of the pen, we couldn't help but pick her up and start playing with her. And of course we fell in love!
Her name is Daphne (that's my pick. Originally, they called her Chocolate Chip, which does not fit her AT ALL), and she's a little Dachsund mix, about 6 mos. old. I've had for over ten hours now, and still haven't her bark or whine or cry once. She's just so quiet! And sweet too...She loves to be held and petted.
Apparently, her owner surrendered her to the pound this morning (no word on why, but I'm taking her to the vet in the morning to make sure she's not sick at all and to get her shots), so she's probably still traumatized.
Poor baby...But lucky too, because now I can spoil her and love her and take care of her for the rest of her life - hopefully the next 20 years! :)

I have a new recruit. She's a foster-dog who's on her way to a forever, loving home. She'll be spayed while here and is recovering from a severe neglect case. I'm told she weighs much more than she did when she arrived in the shelter who's officers confiscated her. She's been through much, and has had a ton of medical care to save her (Coccidia, worms, mange, kennel cough, malnurished). She's healthy enough to place in foster now.

She's about 2 years old, very demure and shy--and if you sit quietly, she comes over and lays next to you and puts her head in your lap. She loves her head stroked and is just so sweet.

Rescue says the paperwork has already started for an adoption ...They are finishing up home checks and such. I'm very happy it appears she'll have a forever home, but I already know I'll miss her when it comes to take her there. I've been calling her "Sweetheart" because she doesn't have a name yet.

It's funny to see my dog around smaller dog (he's around medium sized), cos he is terrified of them. My cousin's dog met him for the first time last year and my dog was just trying everything to get away from him, hee hee.

It is SO true!

My dod Cindy could sense when I was sick and upset, and she cared. She would just lay next to the couch or put her hand on my lap.

Also, she used to walk under the Christmas tree and let it pet her. She did this with my mom's plants too. She would walk around in circles under them and let the leaves pet her. It was so funny to watch her!

Her original name is unknown, and her new owners will give her a new name...but, I can't just call her dog (it's just so...so...impersonal!). We've been calling her Sweetie.

Today, for the first time, she actually played with us. She jumped on my nephew's bed and had a good roll...then dragged his blanket down the hall shaking it and making little growly noises. She then ran in circles, chased her tail and lept into my lap, burying her head in my chest (she loves head rubs)...all the while wagging her tail. It's the first time I've seen her exhibit real joy and play since she arrived about 4 days ago. She's slowly coming out of her shell and showing us her happy side :)

I also found her on top of the dining room table earlier today (cleaning up after breakfast) Oh well, manner training soon to start. No one told her that was against the rules, afterall.

Okay so I think I am into Dog's faces. They are just so sweet and loving looking. I love those grown up dogs that still have their puppy faces.

My roommate goes nuts for long noses,
I'll have to get a picture of my aunt's dog Mose. He has a really long nose, he is a big black shaggy dog. I can't remember what breed he is though, but his main job that his breed are suppose to do is protect sheep from wolves. So, he is very protective of the family.

Has anyone ever watched that guy that trains dogs on TV? I saw him a couple of times, taking on some dogs that had really bad behavior. Anyways, I like how he got to the core of the problem (usually the owners not the dog) and educated the owners on how when you buy a dog, you have to be really learned on what their specific breed is meant to do. That way you can give them tasks so that they can use their talents and then they are more happy.

Yes, training a dog isn't that hard if you understand their widdle minds (and you are the alpha, not the dog). Ceasar Milan...I think, the Dog whisperer.

My salukis are "chasing" dogs. They love to chase. Because of that, you really need a fence. They love to run.

Lure coursing is a favorite sport for Salukis :) A plastic bag is tied to a line--the line pulled on a motorized course. The dogs have great fun chasing it around a field. I think I have a photo here, somewhere....ah, yes.

These are whippets (another chasing/running breed) following a lure across a local soccer field (The muzzles are for the dogs' saftey--only so they don't grab a line by mistake and hurt their mouths). I took this photo at a local fun day...the numbers are just to tell the dogs apart (there is no betting). There are ribbons and lots of pets and treats :)

Yes they are Colonel!! I miss them so badly. They are large, but so quiet and caring. Rex does something similar to this. He assumes that because he loves our food, we'll love his, too, so occasionally when we're eating something, and e really wants some, he gets a bone, then comes and puts it into someone's lap, as if to say "Wanna trade??" Then we pass it around and pretend to eat it, which drives him crazy, so he leaves to eat bone in peace, so we can eat in peace, too.

My mom's dog Max used to bury his treats on the couch. He'd do the whole digging thing and then the whole covering it up with imaginary dirt. Only problem was that if you sat down next to one he'd freak out.

My brother & his girlfriend give their dogs treats every night, and they're so funny. 3 of them have particular places where they will eat their treats, while 1 will eat it where he gets it. Then Sasha one of the dogs, won't take her treat until the other 3 get theirs, i'm not sure whether she's afraid one of the other dogs will take it off her!

:rotfl: dogs are so funny about food!

A friend of mine had a miniature poodle that would bury her kibble in the waterbed. My friend didn't know until she moved, and took the bed apart to find all this dog food!
This dog also figured out that a human's feet were the first thing to get out of bed, so when she wanted her mom to get up, she would dig at the blankets to uncover her feet.

Yes, dogs are funny with their treats. What great stories :)

I have one dog that used to hold things hostage for treats. That was our fault, as we inadvertantly trained him to do so as a puppy. He would steal things--just shoes and such, and run out the dog door with them. If you approached him, he thought it was a fun game to run around the yard in a game of keep away. We made the mistake of trading him a yummy for his item-du-jour. As he grew, when he wanted a treat, he would pick something up (a shoe, a pot holder, a piece of paper, item of clothing), make sure you saw he had something (often walking by you several times flaunting the article) and run out into the dog yard and hold it until you returned with a treat. Bad us--We since never offered treats for items again.

One of his favorite articles (he thought was the most fun for this game) was my teen-aged daughters bras. I still remember the mornings of an enraged 16 year old girl yelling death threats at the young dog as he paraded her undergarments around the yard for all to see. :rotfl: It did encourage her to learn to make sure her clothes were picked up in her room, though.

Oh what great dog stories 8m57w6, Jessica, mariebeth83, Colonel and Redhart!! Dogs are really amazing and sometimes so funny with food and treats!!

I have another great story to share about my lab. As all labs he loves food (he is not fat because the do a lot of exercises around and also because we take care of it), but since he lives in our country house with a lot of fruit trees around, he usually eats all he can!! Most of the times he gets the ones that are on the ground, picking them with a lot of care to avoid the rotten ones! It's so funny to watch it!! However for some black berries that we have that grow in tall trees, but with a lot of branches (his favorites) he does his best performance, jumping to get to the branches to bring then down while holding it with his mouth. When the branch is low enough he manages to hold it down with his paws to eat the fruits in it! Sometimes te branch bounces back so he loses it and all the effort comes with no prize. I feel so sorry for him when it happens, but when I give him some that we pick he eats but runs back to the tree. So looks like that what he really enjoys is to play with the tree and to be happy about himself when he manage to get a good branch down!! We laught of the scene and also because this berries are also a joy for a lot of birds and squirrels and sometimes they are eating the berries on the top of the tree and they keep looking down, I think that they are laughing of my Padfoot effort!!

That's how Rex is. "Dogs don't eat spinach!"; he eats it anyway. "Dogs won't like flavored pistachios!"; he eats it anyway. "It's mustard Rex, you won't like it."; and yet he eats it.

My dad read somewhere, or heard somewhere that is you have softened water, then it takes out all the minerals that are good for dogs when they drink it. So no he's started buying big 6-packs of gallon water bottles, which it turns out was a great idea. Not only does Rex get all his minerals, but since he goes through one about every 2 days, that means he keeps getting new toys! He loves playing with them, so not only do they funtion as water bottles, but toys as well, which means we really get out money's worth with them!

Unless it's a medical thing, the only way I know of to deal with it is to brush daily and vacuum them, if they'll let you.
Barney used to be scared of the vacuum, but he actually gets in the way now when we do the floors, he likes it so much. It helps that we have a built-in system, so there's no noisy canister to scare him.
One thing that usually helps get a lot of loose hair off at once is a shedding blade:
http://i223.photobucket.com/albums/dd140/Colonel_Fubster/lg-2827-30943-shed-blade.jpg
They're great for shorter coats, like labs and shepherds. Barney loves his, it seems to scratch all his itches. :)

Redhart
November 20th, 2007, 6:22 pm
Oh, I have one of those tools for my lab--great for getting out undercoat. Yes, shedding is simply what double-coated dogs do periodically. It's their natural cycle to get rid of the old, dead coat and replace it (probably this time of year) with their new, winter coat.

I have one lab--who does shed her undercoat. The other three are Salukis. They are single-coated dogs (no fluffy undercoat to shed). They are a desert breed, so a double coat was selected out of this breed of dog eons ago (9,000 year old breed...you can see a carving of feathered salukis on a chest in King Tut's tomb).

If you wish to out-do nature, then your other options (besides aiding nature by brushing)are:

A) shave the dog...that takes care of that! Better buy them a sweater after, though. Winters can sometimes be cold for nekkid dogs.

B) Have your dog laminated (not so great for the skin, but then you only have to dust them off a couple times a week).

So here's the latest Barney saga....

Sandy has a new stuffed toy, Barney knows he isn't supposed to play with it, because he shreds them. So the other night, I was lying on my bed, reading, and Barney came in with the toy in his mouth. He placed it carefully on the bed next to me, and wagged his tail, as if to say "See, I can be careful with toys."
So I gave the toy back to him and reminded him that he can't shred it, it's Sandy's toy. So he carefully carried it into the hallway, but a few moments later I heard a noise, it sounded like tearing fabric. I jump up and run into the hall, turning on the lights, asking Barney what he's doing. He was two feet away from the toy, which was unharmed, and he was scratching at the carpet (which sounds a lot like fabric being torn!). He looked at me and wagged, then ran right past me and jumped into the very middle of my bed, where he stretched out (taking up most of the bed), and pretended to be fast asleep.

My dog is smarter than I am.....

And the toy is still happily un-shredded.

Rex has trained us better than we have trained him. He used to take our shoes all the time when he wanted to play, and start to chew them to bits if we didn't catch on quickly enough. Either way, when we saw he had the shoe, one of us would run over and take it away from him, and scold him. Then we'd either send him outside, or get him something he was allowed to play with. Once he figured this out, he would bring my mom shoes everyday. He would never chew them, or tear them apart, (which it took us a while to realize ) he would simply bring them to my mom, lay them on the floor at her feet, then wag his tail. If she ignored him, he would pick up the shoe and drop it again, or throw it aorund, without really causing it any harm, however, we couldn't take the risk of dad's favortie shoes being eaten, so we had no choice but to play with him. He's too smart sometimes.

 congratulations hmweasley!! I'm sure that you will have the gratest of times with your new puppy!! I;m with the others that said that you can try the names and he will help you to sort it out. I have the same problem everytime that we get a new dog!! I kind of agree that Godric is a cool name and Colonel sugestion/joke made me :rotfl: because Gilderoy is blonde and according to all witches, gorgeous, the only problem is that he was a fake and now is totally nuts!!

We're getting the puppy Monday!! My mom wants to name it Mickey because she says it's close to Mikey and will be easier for him to learn. I can't wait! Our last puppy died after a couple weeks with heart problems! I hope we're able to keep this puppy a lot longer!

Wow! So much has been going on! My grandma is in the hospital and probably won't live long. She's going to the nursing home Monday (the day we're getting Mickey) because we can't take care of her anymore! :upset:
My family that lives in North Carolina is coming to visit on Monday because of my grandma too! I feel so sorry for the puppy because all these people will be here when he moves in (Most of them will be staying with us and some with other family), and he's going to have to deal with everyone bursting into tears at random moments! Right now as I type this I'm about to cry! So much is going on now! I just feel sorry for the poor dog!

On the bright side the whole family will be together again (hopefully everyone can make it). Except for our family in Georgia, but I have a feeling they'll show up too. Sorry about that. I really needed to vent though.

Do you have any idea what we could do to help the puppy?

So sorry to hear about your Grandma, hmweasley. :huggles:

Some dogs don't mind crowds, but if the puppy gets anxious having so many people around, it's best if one person he knows takes him into another room to let him have a break. Is he crate-trained? If so, you could put him in his crate in a quiet room with the door closed for an hour or two at a time, as long as he's willing to settle.
I hope it all works out okay. :)

I'm also sorry to hear of your grandmother--prayers go out to you and your family.

What Colonel Fubster said is good advice. Just make sure puppy has a quiet place to retreat/be taken to when he shows signs of having enough or being overwhelmed. Crates are great for that. I keep a couple crates out and open and the dogs use them as adults. When they want some quiet time for a nap (or to hide a cookie), or just be left alone--they will crawl into one and curl up. Dogs like a den--it makes them feel safe.

Mickey just did the cutest thing ever! He found the mirror in my parents room. He just stood there staring, and then ran to me, back to the mirror, and back to me. My dad said he was staring at the mirror earlier too. Right now he's staring at the keyboard as I type. I think he's trying to figure out what I'm doing, and getting in my way.

I have some absolutely awful news.
Early (like 6 am) last Thursday morning, my mother let our dogs Cookie, Daisy, and Daphne out to use the bathroom. When she went to let them back in, Daisy (as always) was waiting right beside the front door.
Cookie and Daphne, however, had crossed the steet (something they had never done before). When my mother called to them, they started back across towards her and the were both hit. They both died instantly.
We had Cookie since I was about 12-13 years old. Our first Chihuahua, our first full-time indoor dog, she loved to cuddle under the covers with you, play fight, and she was terrified of car rides. In all these years, I have never been home and Cookie not been there. Because I'm at college right now, I was not able to go to her funeral, and this has been so hard on my family. My mother feels as though she's lost a child, and she keeps blaming herself. My brother and I are coping, but we have our moments. She was our sweetheart, and now she's gone.
And Daphne was a gift from me to my mother - she wanted another little girl, and I saw Daphne at the pound, and fell in love and gave her to my mom. We had had her for less than a month, and she was only six months old. I miss her too.

Thank God that we have Daisy. I gave her to my mom two and a half years ago, and she's still safe, although at this moment, she's probably the most protected dog in America. If my mom had the money, she'd probably hire an armed guard for the little girl.

Oh, how I miss those two.

RIP Cookie 1998-2007
RIP Daphne June 2007-November 2007

I am absolutely positive that the old saying, "All good dogs go to Heaven" is true. We miss them very much, but I know that they're in Doggie Heaven, eating cheese (Cookie's favorite) and running through fields of tall grass (Daphne's favorite).
Yes, this hurts, but at least I know they're safe, wherever they are.

Thanks again.

I would like to say that dogs make excellent pillows. I was really tired yesterday, due to my crazy choice to stay up really late the night before, and I was laying on the couch with Rex, and fell asleep on him. It was quite comfortable. He was sleeping to, and the only reason I woke up is because he was dreaming, and started twitching. He may have been running in his dream. It was really cute.

I just found out that my little cousin Max is getting a dog for Christmas! He has loved dogs since he was a baby. When my aunt took him to Build-A-Bear, he didn't want a bear but a stuff dog that he carried everywhere with him for years. My aunt is not a big dog fan, but she finally caved this year and they bought him a baby Collie.

Max asked her the other day, "Mom, I really am never going to get a dog am I?"

My aunt just laughed and thought to herself "Just wait!"

They still don't know how they are going to give him the puppy yet? Any good ideas that I could pass on?

I should add that my mom said my aunt is actually really excited to get the puppy. She went out and bought a ton of things for the little one and can't wait to have her in the house. Even though she swore for years that she would never have a dog in her house. One more convert for Dog Loving!

Oh how exciting!!! When I got my bunny for Christmas, it was a total surprise. My parent s made me sit in a chair with my eyes closed, and everyone was really quite, then my mom left and came back with something (while my grandpa pretended to make horse hoof noises, joking they got me a pnoy), which she out in my lap. When I opened my eyes, I squealed so loudly! But she just sat there in the towel looking at me. It was easily the best gift I ever recieved. I think that idea was really neat, but it may not work as well for a dog.

Oh, and great news Jessica!! I'm so happy Indy is doing well!!

Best wishes to Indy!! (So weird, that's my friend's sons name..) Give him lots of cuddles from us!

I'm trying to convince my parents we need another dog. :D Our dog is 10 years old and the only time he ever gets to really run around and play like a little puppy is when my sister brings her puppies over once a week. You should see him, it's SO cute! He gets so excited, and when they come running in he just lights up! They play for hours, but he's always lonely when they have to go home. I think he needs a little puppy of his own!

Indy is continuing to heal well. He's going to get his stitches out next week and his spirits and energy remain high :)

Bosch has been having a pooping inside problem for about a year now. I don't think it's intentional (at least not most of the time). My best guess is some kind of senility. She's 14 and she doesn't seem to know she's doing it. I've been doing some online research on senility in dogs and older dog problems but any tips from people who've had older dogs would be appreciated.

Colonel_Fubster
December 30th, 2007, 8:33 am
That's great to hear about Indy!

Mollie had some incontinence problems in her old age (she passed away at 16) and we thought part of it was senility, although she did have kidney problems too. We made sure to get her outside every couple of hours during the day, and that seemed to help. Of course, someone's always home here. We did research into doggie diapers too, they can be expensive, but are available online.
One thing to consider is where and when Bosch is going, you might be able to predict the event and get her out before she can't hold it any more. If she's going during the night, one idea is to feed her earlier, say before 5 pm.
I'm assuming the poop is healthy and there are no signs of worms. :)

The things we dog people talk about huh?

Jessica
December 30th, 2007, 9:10 pm
We've been doing all of that. :( I'm going to get her into the vet this week. My only thought is that it's either some kind of senility or that her arthritis is bad enough that she doesn't want to get up.

Yeah I know it's gross but it's either this or join a dog forum and I waste enough time online already

I love dogs! My old one, Samson, was a bit mean and I had to give him to my ex mother in law. He was a biter, he was really good with me and my kids but my son couldn't ever have kids over to play because Samson would go nuts. He was a really nervous dog but also pretty smart. We got him in El Paso Texas so my ex always joked that he was mexican. Everytime he barked we would say "Samson, you know I don't speak spanish!" and amazingly he would look at us weird and then stop barking. He was crazy.

I am currently looking for a new dog. My son wants a big dog that he can wrestle with. I miss having a dog around :( They are so comforting. I mean my parents have 2 but they aren't really my cup of tea. They are really little dogs and I prefer big dogs. Oh well. I will find a dog soon and unfortunately for him I am gonna let my son poick out the name, be prepared for me to come back introducing Optimus Prime :)

My dog is way smarter than my cat. His entire life is all a scheme to get food away from us (he's a beagle). Every time he comes near you, he puts on his sad face ready for a treat and then when he gets something he goes on a streak of trying to grab everything in sight. He's gotten into some pretty awful things, but he's still alive and kicking at 11: A chicken bone (i know they're terrible for dogs, but he's still alive!), multiple sticks of butter, bags of chips, any meat left on the table, and once a 21 oz steak. He ate it all in about 5 minutes. And then expected to get dinner an hour later.

My old dog Samson was like this! Only he didn't trick people, he would just wait until you were talking with someone and steal it out of your hands and run. He was so quick sometimes you didn't even notice. He also like to hang out under my son's highchair because he knew that was a great place to get some food.

Once I came into our kitchen and I noticed that a cabinet on the bottom was open, I then saw an empty bag of chocolate. I was thinking why was that down there? so I went to talk to my husband at the time and he said he had put it down there to hide it (what?) and I told him it was gone. Well he marched in to talk to our son, when we notcied our dog Samson. He had a chocolate beard. I freaked, we lived right next to the vet on an army base, so I ran next door and explained and they rushed him in to look at him. He was fine somehow. The vet was puzzled, she said that amount could have killed him, or at least made him sick but somehow he has an iron stomach. Its strange, it must be from eating all the human food. He is used to it. He didn't even have an upset stomach...crazy dog.
