Battle Royale

.. The premise:
42 high school students are sent to a deserted island, given weapons, and told to kill each other, or be killed themselves.. Only one person can survive....

Battle Royale is originally japanese, but it's been translated.. It's a really good story.. Though, it is one of the most controversial things ever written in Japan..
Has anyone read it? .. what do you think?

My 15 year old son read this--I did not preview it or even look much at it. I was just happy he had chosen to read something, as reading is a passion of mine that not too many of my children have acquired. His Principal at school happened to see him reading this book in study hall, took a look at it and asked him if his parents knew he was reading such a book! My son was pretty upset for a while thinking I would get a talking to from the Principal, but she never called.

My son enjoyed the book and it didn't turn him into a killer any more than Lord of the Flies (which I had to read in high school as an assigned text) did me.

Didn't they make a movie of this? I saw a movie with the same title and plot. It was a great movie. Who's the author of the book? I would love to read it.

I saw the film which was good but I'm not sure that I'd be keen to read the book. Too many violent killings for me, I think. For some reason I handle a gory movie better than a gory book. :shrug:

Yea, it was made into a movie.. The book is so much better though.. A lot more background info on the characters, and the ending is a bit different..
But, it's written by Koushun Takami, and published by "Viz"
.. There are a few grammatical errors in the book from the translation (It was originally Japanese)
