Well, I do cross-stitch and knitting and I have also got cross-stitch patterns for Harry Potter and I have made some cards with them.
Cross-stitch and knittingTitania October 16th, 2007, 8:31 am Well, I do cross-stitch and knitting and I have also got cross-stitch patterns for Harry Potter and I have made some cards with them. eliza101 October 16th, 2007, 4:23 pm I cross stitch as well, I guess to be truthful I di just about all the needlecrafts except I dont tat or make lace. griffiegrrl October 17th, 2007, 3:12 pm I've done both but I haven't really finished anything. I have started knitting a Harry Potter Gryffindor scarf, I just have to finish it. My mom is a knitting freak so I guess I was influenced by her in the knitting aspect. kuroi_shi October 18th, 2007, 5:46 am ... I know how to knit.. I just never do it I've been working on a gryffindor scarf for 3 years... It's 6 ft long now.. .. I'm aiming for 12 ft. Night_Sky October 19th, 2007, 2:29 am I have been cross stitching for a long time now. I enjoy it. I love making thing for my friends and family. I am trying to knit and I am not doing a very good job of it but I am still trying. I have never seen anything on cross stitching with Harry Potter. Where did you find it or can you make your own patterns. I can not do that. MC2456 October 20th, 2007, 5:54 am Wow! I'm horrible at sewing and knitting...but I did do cross-stitching once. It was so horrible...even a 3 year old could do better. LOLS RemusLupinFan November 4th, 2007, 9:56 pm I can do basic knitting - very basic, mind you. But I haven't done it for a looonnngg time. The largest thing I've knitted was a blanket for my stuffed animals when I was little. My grandma taught me to knit; she's a lot better than I am. ;) FrenchBrit November 7th, 2007, 8:10 pm I just happened to come across a group of knitters in another website that are HP fans and are knitting HP things. I hope it's okay for me to tell the website (I don't reply to many posts or threads, I just like to read what other people are talking about.) Anyway, it's knittinghelp.com. If you enter the forum, you'll find it. Some of them show pictures of their projects. I also stumbled across a knitting book of patterns for HP fans at a local book store. bookkid November 10th, 2007, 3:58 am I absolutely love knitting! When I was in sixth grade our local library started a teen knitting club and my best friend convinced me to join. I wasn't to excited about it at first but now I love it. We meet on the first and third tuesday of the month for an hour and it's incredibly fun. I've been going to it for almost two years now and our next meeting we're going to start doing mittens and socks on DPNs. I learned to do cable last week. I have made a ton of things including and afghan, a vest (which didn't turn out so great, by the way), a billion scarves, a trillion dishclothes, headbands, hats, purses, etc. I started learning how to felt and now I'm addicted to that. I absolutely love knitting, but I've never done a Harry Potter project. dobbylikesme November 13th, 2007, 11:36 am I just happened to come across a group of knitters in another website that are HP fans and are knitting HP things. You're probably talking about "Charmed Knits", I just bought that book, and it has some very neat projects in it. I'm so going to do a Ravenclaw house sweater. I just made a Ravenclaw earflap hat yesterday, and am currently working on a Ravenclaw scarf. I love knitting, it is so relaxing, and it's so nice to wear something that you created yourself. It's a shame that good quality wool is so expensive, that you can't really save any money, so copying something that you see in a store is usually not worth it. Freaky December 1st, 2007, 10:31 pm I spent many years doing cross-stitch but I've got about halfway through a large cross-stitch and it has now been sitting in my stepsons' bedroom for about 2 years. I've been going through a watching DVD phase and I like to watch them rather than listen to them so I found that I couldn't concentrate on the work I was doing, so it got put away. I can knit (and I can do it while watching tv) but it's been a long time since I knitted anything other than squares or strips. Knitting just isn't very big down here, and wool is certainly very difficult to come by so I don't do it very often. I'm working on a rainbow blanket for my daughter (7 strips of each different colour) and I'm on the last one now. I haven't picked that up for a while, I go through fits and starts, but I'm sure I'll finish it before the winter is up! Voldemorts8thHorcrux December 2nd, 2007, 2:46 am i really really wanna learn how to knit. not sure if i ever would use any knitting skills, but it would be cool to know. my grandma tried to teach me, but i couldnt do it, at all, i just messed up at the 2nd stitch if i managed to get the first. i was hopeless, lol Desert_Rose December 20th, 2007, 8:43 pm I just learned how to knit. I'm almost finished my first scarf. (It's currenlty over 2 feet long. I'm aiming for 4 feet.) I have done some cross-stitching in the past but I don't do it any longer. hpaggie January 1st, 2008, 4:17 am i know how to do both...but i perfer knitting...i recently got the charmed knits book for my birthday and absolutely love it since its filled with hp patterns...i probably have at least 5 projects started from the book...mainly scarves and socks. Tenshi January 1st, 2008, 7:12 pm I used to stitch a lot years ago and made my own motives (usually anime one). But then I don't have a need for such "things" and stopped doing it, but it's still fun to do. As for knitting, I learned it at school but I couldn't knit a simple scarf, even if my life would depend on it. Desraelda January 5th, 2008, 1:40 am i know how to do both...but i perfer knitting...i recently got the charmed knits book for my birthday and absolutely love it since its filled with hp patterns...i probably have at least 5 projects started from the book...mainly scarves and socks. I just found this last week on Amazon and ordered it. I haven't done two-needle knitting in a long time, and this seems like a fun way to get back into it. I do one-needle knitting which is a cross between knitting and crocheting. Maybe I can adapt the patterns to my single needle. I'm really looking forward to trying. Tenshi January 5th, 2008, 3:21 pm I do one-needle knitting which is a cross between knitting and crocheting. Maybe I can adapt the patterns to my single needle. I'm really looking forward to trying.I never heard before of such a technic. Two or more needles yes but not one needle. dobbylikesme January 5th, 2008, 3:36 pm I want to do the cloak in "Charmed Knits", I think the instructions are for child-sizes only though, so I have to recalculate them. But that cloak looks so cozy. kuroi_shi February 2nd, 2008, 6:41 am I have a knitting class this year, and I have to make an accessory for an assignment.. I'm gonna make a backpack ^^;; I have no idea how to do it.. Anyone know of any books that come with backpack knitting patterns? .. I've found a few online, but I don't like any of them. dobbylikesme February 4th, 2008, 8:48 am I've never heard of knitted backpacks. Backpacks have to be very durable , so I would imagine you'd have to use very high quality yarn, and possibly line the inside with tough fabric. Other than that, why not. I've never seen patterns for backpacks though, sorry. Pegasus February 4th, 2008, 5:42 pm I never heard before of such a technic. Two or more needles yes but not one needle. I've seen it in crochet books and magazines, by several different names, including "crochet knit." The result was pretty, but I thought the technique was a bit tiresome. Titania February 6th, 2008, 2:11 pm @Night Sky: Sorry, haven't had a look at this thread for a while. The Harry Potter cross-stitch charts can be found ina French book (I cannot design my own) that you can still buy at the cross-stitch fairs here in the UK, it is offered at a reduced price now, the charts were not too good to work from even though the pictures were nice in the end. I also found a "Daniel Radcliffe" chart in one of the cross-stich magazines and somehow my friend managed to find some more Harry Potter cross-stitch charts somewere else for my birthday. There are plenty of books with general fantasy charts around and the cross-stitch magazines are packed with them too! PureBloodGirl April 19th, 2008, 2:24 am I love knitting!!:love:My Mom taught me about 2 or 3 years ago and it's been really cool to make all this stuff. I usally make scarfs, ponchos, shrugs, pillows, and right now I'm working on white fingerless gloves. The yarn is so soft and they are so comfy! I've still got to work on the second glove though. alwayssilverdoe June 3rd, 2008, 7:32 pm I want to learn how to and then make: A Gryffindor scarf A Ravenclaw scarf A Hufflepuff scarf A Slytherin scarf So I can rotate wearing them :) And then a pink & green blanket to go over my bed which will match the colours in my bedroom. :) Any other ideas for projects I could do? :) Vita October 11th, 2008, 3:59 am I hope someone can help me. Im a knitter and am working on a scarf and I have come to a W&T (wrap and turn) I get the basic idea but all of the demonstrations and examples online that Ive found doesnt really make sense to me. Can anyone explain what exactly is done to achieve a W&T on a knit row? mexicant November 7th, 2008, 10:39 am I've been learning how to knit for years. My husband's aunt is teaching me. She's only in her thirties, so it's been fun for me to learn from her. I've made a few scarves, and can only do basic things like garter, stockinette, and ribbed stitching. I'm hoping to someday learn more, and make socks. I'm afraid of double-pointed needles, though, silly as that is. I'd love to make another scarf, nice and long, with matching ones for my boys (including the husband - biggest boy of them all). jonsgirljen November 25th, 2008, 5:53 am I'm not really good at either, but I can sorta do them both. I would like to learn how to knit better, and my gramma was gonna show me, but then she had a stroke and couldn't go it anymore. My mom was the one who ended up showing what I do know how to do, but she doesn't know a whole lot more than I do. But my fiancee's mom knits, so I've been thinking about asking her to show me some more things. I think that I would enjoy knitting. Angel26 November 29th, 2008, 1:55 pm I used to do a cross stitch when I was younger, but I always got discouraged when I made a mistake, because then I would have to go back and unpick what I had just done. It can be hard to follow the pattern, especially when the symbols are so small and many are similar in shape. That's the main reason why I made mistakes all the time and it was very frustrating. I've recently started doing cross stitch again, and I finished one in about 3 weeks. I've found a really simple way of making it easier to read the pattern. I create a grid on Microsoft Excel and enter all the symbols on there (this does take a long time, but it's so much easier to follow). I can zoom in as far as I want to, and I can highlight the squares I'm planning on doing next. I can also shade all the squares I've already done with different colours. And if I do make a mistake and have to unpick what I've just done, I can easily un-highlight the squares on the spreadsheet so I don't get confused. That's a problem I had when I used the original pattern that came with the kit. I highlighted the squares that I had done, but if I made a mistake, I would find it hard to figure out what I need to redo, especially if the area I had unpicked was a large one. I started a new cross stitch about a month ago after finishing the first one, and so far, I've only made a few small mistakes, and I'm about 3 quarters of the way through it. mexicant December 1st, 2008, 11:14 pm You know, I have tried cross-stitching, and while I did enjoy it I found I just didn't have the discipline or patience for doing anything remotely large. I've done bookmarks and ornaments, and that's about all I'm cut out for. My mind wanders too much for it, apparently. I did pick up my knitting needles again, though, and am in the process of making several scarves for some friends. It's going well so far. I got back into the swing of it and can start zoning out again after a few rows. I'm also trying to teach a group of about a dozen the basics of knitting. It's...interesting. We haven't gotten past casting on yet. _LoonyLovegood_ December 20th, 2008, 5:24 pm After wanting to learn to knit for a while (mostly to be able to make House scarves and, eventually, a Weasley sweater ), I went yesterday to the knitting store near me and bought my supplies. They were able to get me started and I caught on pretty quickly. However, I kept running into the problem of adding stitches, and being a perfectionist (and not knowing how to fix mistakes), kept starting over. I've been working on a Gryffindor scarf all day today, and it's actually going really well, aside from my inability to switch colors. I really hope to be able to learn more eventually and make some cool things. mexicant December 21st, 2008, 11:02 pm  Switching colors is actually pretty easy - I'm sure you could find some tutorial videos on sites like youtube. :) Those kids I mentioned I was teaching knitting to? Well, right now seven out of ten of them are getting along really well when they pay attention to what they are doing. I'm working on a new scarf right now, using seed stitch. I'm actually really liking it - it goes so quickly and I can get a lot done in just a few hours. Vita December 29th, 2008, 9:37 am Ooh seed stitch scarves are really pretty :) Im working on a really cute button hat right now. Simple seed stitch rim with a flap and a bit wooden button the the top is a simple basic knit hat pattern. I'm using Rowan Big Wool so it's such a quick knit. I'm almost done. mexicant December 29th, 2008, 9:42 am Oh, that sounds great! I got my first set of double-pointed needles for Christmas and I'm a bit scared to use them. Are you using double-pointed needles or round ones? Angel26 December 29th, 2008, 11:03 pm I finally finished my last cross stitch about 3 weeks ago: http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/3426/xstitch2ag7.jpg It isn't quite finished. The French knots haven't been done yet, but I can't figure out how to do them properly, so my mum is going to do them. This is the first one I did: http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4341/xstitch1ow4.jpg And this is what I'm currently working on: http://img205.imageshack.us/img205/4162/xstitch3jn4.jpg This one's a little more difficult. There's a lot of mixed colours. The most strands I've ever had to use at once was 5 for a halfstitch, but this one has cross stitches with 6 strands, and it's really hard to keep it looking neat. But it's all for artistic effect. All of the dark green is 6 strand cross stitch, and it makes it stand out more. Vita December 30th, 2008, 1:33 am Oh, that sounds great! I got my first set of double-pointed needles for Christmas and I'm a bit scared to use them. Are you using double-pointed needles or round ones? I start out with a (US) size 13 circular needle then switch over to double pointed when I start decreasing to shape the top. Double pointed needles look a bit daunting but the trick is to focus on the two needles you are using and try to forget about the 2 or 3 other ones that are hanging there. And always keep the stitches near the center of the needle (Ive dropped enough stitches to have learned my lesson :p) Good luck! Let me know how using DP needles work out :D I might photograph some of my recent things Ive made later tonight and post them here. ETA - Angel26, those are great! Seriously, it must take so much patience and skill to do needle point. My great aunt for weddings aways does the scene of Jesus praying in the garden with The Lord's Prayer on it. It's boggles me on how she managed to do one but she's done like 12 of them now. Crazy! _LoonyLovegood_ January 2nd, 2009, 7:02 pm After finishing two scarves, I've begun working on a hat, and am positively failing at working with circular needles. I'm used to just being able to pull out a row or two when I make a mistake, but it's not quite as simple when you have rounds of 100 stitches. Oh well, I suppose I'll give it another try soon enough, and hopefully I'll get the hang of it eventually. Vita January 3rd, 2009, 4:47 pm Really? See I find straight needles a pain to work with. Even when I make scarves I use a circular needle. Hat's are my favorite to make :D Vita January 11th, 2009, 7:43 pm http://farm1.static.flickr.com/197/475942493_ecf4312fe1.jpg My current project :) (this isnt my actual scarf, just the pic off the site I got the pattern from. ) Vita January 20th, 2009, 2:38 pm Just joined Ravelry :) User name evitaporter, feel free to friend me over there mexicant January 20th, 2009, 3:15 pm Oh, that scarf is gorgeous! Are you using a similar yarn to make yours? And is that a stockingette stitch or a 1x1 ribbing? Because it doesn't look like garter to me... Vita January 20th, 2009, 4:35 pm Im using a 1x1 ribbing. Yes. I'm doing the exact same colors (Noro in Kureyon and Silk Garden) It's absolutely beautiful! Here (http://brooklyntweed.blogspot.com/2007/04/noro-scarf.html) is the info on it. :) Very easy but the striping is a bit of the pain. Trying to clean up the edges takes a bit of time. mexicant January 20th, 2009, 6:15 pm I thought it had to be a 1x1 ribbing otherwise it would be curling into a tube! That's the only thing I don't like about SS - you just can't do it in a scarf unless you line the edges with garter or it rolls up on you. Vita March 7th, 2009, 7:21 pm Newest knitting project is Hermione's cabled lace hat she wore in OOTP :D http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3026/2697141035_4dfbcdc9dc.jpg ^ Not my hat, just what it looks like :) Im only 5 rows in :p But this is my first cable! :scared: Twinklepins April 5th, 2009, 10:18 pm I knit, and it's great fun! flimseycauldron May 4th, 2009, 5:18 pm Vita, I love that Noro scarf. Good luck on the cabling. I'm not near that daring yet. I just completed my first mitten ever. I totally screwed up purling through the back loop but these mittens will be for my hubby who simply wouldn't know the difference. :p LyraLovegood May 4th, 2009, 8:04 pm I just randomly got an urge to knit the other day, so I picked up my #8 needles and the green goats' wool I bought on a whim a year and a half ago, cast on 60 stitches, and am now on about row 17. SageRacer (my bf, for those who've never run into me in other forums) asked me what I'm knitting, if it's a sweater for him... and I just say, no, I'm just knitting because I feel like knitting. I wouldn't be able to knit an actual garment without a pattern, and I don't have needles long enough to knit the back of a man's sweater without dropping tons of stitches. Anyway, there's my ramble for the day, sorry if regulars look at this post as cluttering up a thread! Morning_Star May 4th, 2009, 8:50 pm I just completed my first mitten ever. Me too! I was really pleased with the result, it was far better than I had hoped for, and then I knitted the socond mitten, and it was at least two sizes smaller than the first... My next pair will be for my little brother, and hopefully they will look the same size. :D Perhaps I'll post a picture of the smallest (and most perfect) mitten later, or my brother's pair when I have finished them. :D LyraLovegood May 4th, 2009, 9:13 pm Reading back after I posted ** my thought was that a hat would be easier than a pair of mittens, even with cables. All that shaping around wrists, thumbs and fingers; no way I could do it without a pattern. Morning_Star May 4th, 2009, 9:28 pm Reading back after I posted ** my thought was that a hat would be easier than a pair of mittens, even with cables. All that shaping around wrists, thumbs and fingers; no way I could do it without a pattern. The thumb is the only problem with mittens, though if you have someone who knows much about knitting to help you, even that is pretty easy. :) LyraLovegood May 5th, 2009, 12:57 am I'm on my own with knitting. My mom doesn't, and I don't know if any of my rl acquaintances does, either. If they do, the topic never comes up. That's the nice thing about web bb's; you can find threads on alomst any topic, if you're willing to dig back through the history of the board, or have any facility with the Search Function! The Pirate King June 30th, 2009, 8:27 am Working on my first pair of socks. Geh. Reading the information about creating the heel flap, turning the heel, etc. already has me a bit queasy. Wish me luck, seasoned knitters! Titania July 23rd, 2009, 8:47 am @The Pirate King: Good luck with the socks! May I ask which hemisphere you live in? At the moment I am just sticking to my cross-stitch, maybe in winter I will try to knit socks, I have not really udnerstood the instructions to knit heels either, so I am not sure if I will succeed! snapes_witch August 15th, 2009, 7:23 am Working on my first pair of socks. Geh. Reading the information about creating the heel flap, turning the heel, etc. already has me a bit queasy. Wish me luck, seasoned knitters! Don't fret about the heel instructions, just do the heel step-by-step and you should be fine. Doing a heel is one time it might not be a good idea to read ahead!! HMN September 17th, 2009, 9:17 pm Working on my first pair of socks. Geh. Reading the information about creating the heel flap, turning the heel, etc. already has me a bit queasy. Wish me luck, seasoned knitters!I just got into sock knitting recently, I really like it and now am on my 4th pair. It's a very satisfying thing to knit. If you get stuck go to YouTube to find videos to help show the way. I didn't get where to pick up stitches after the heel flap until I saw someone do it in action. Good luck! bananajoe September 21st, 2009, 4:04 am For some reason I've always wanted to learn to knit, even though I don't know any one who does, so the summer after I graduated I went and bought a how to book and know I've been knitting for about a year. I've done hats, scarves, socks, mittens, and just recently started lace shawls. Socks and dpn's scared me at first too, but they're really not as bad as they look. With socks, you pretty much just have to follow the heel instructions blindly and then once you've done that first one, its like oh, that's how that works. I'm on ravelry as bananajoe, and they have lots of Harry Potter patterns as well as forums with people willing to answer any question, no matter how stupid you might think it is. Morning_Star February 21st, 2010, 8:59 pm I just started knitting the mittens I promised a friend almost a year ago now... I'm almost half-done with the first one, so this is going great! :D I'll post a picture here when I'm finished, if I remember. I think I should start to knit more, so I can beat my Dad in knitting a sweater. :elaugh: He started it when he was 23, so I'm planning to be finished when I reach twenty-three. He's not done yet (he's close to 41 now), he just gave it to his mum for her to finish. To be fair, he was almost finished when he sent it to his mother, he only had a part of one sleeve left. Schlubalybub July 8th, 2010, 1:50 pm I knit. I've got a scarf I'm knitting but it's a practice one, my first. I'm going to look for some nice wool to make a stripy scarf with, I just need to decide on the colours Hairband July 9th, 2010, 10:27 am I love to knit! Except when I do, sometimes my hands get tingly and fall asleep. I think I might be getting carpal tunnel though, so that may be it. I actually taught my mom how to knit.... last summer she knitted around twelve dishcloths! I really don't know how to knit anything other than scarves... and I've never completely one. It's just really an idle activity for me to keep my hands busy while I watch TV, but I hardly watch it these days so my projects fall by the wayside....You have to try a hat. They are more fun (I think) than scarves, and not so relentless. This video has a basic how-to for a very basic hat. L_hl7HGMDy0 Schlubalybub July 9th, 2010, 5:24 pm I'm nearing the end of my second ball of wool for my practice scarf- I'm worried cos I don't actually know how to cast off HMN July 21st, 2010, 2:38 pm Casting off is pretty easy. Start by knitting 2 stitches. then loop the first one over the second one. Then knit another stitch and loop the 2nd one over the newly knit one. And so on until they are all off the needle. I'm sure there is a video that explains it better. Will look. The only thing it doesn't cover is how to take off the last stitch. When you have one stitch left, you cut the yarn from the ball, about a 6" length, and then thread it through the last loop to make a knot. 0plhuwVF4j0 Liselle August 20th, 2010, 7:56 pm Just curious if anyone is doing the big knit 2010 (www.innocentdrinks.ie/thebigknit/) for innocent (the smoothie people). I've about 11 made so far and I'm starting to get more adventurous. I think it's just an Irish/UK thing thus far but curious to know if anyone else is doing it. Schlubalybub October 5th, 2010, 6:35 pm Right, I haven't actually finished my first scarf, but it's getting colder and I want my stripy one before it gets too cold, so I've started it. I'm only actually on the second black stripe, with a purple one in the middle, but it doesn't look to bad so far. I was worried about changing the colours, but it seems OK. Will post pics when I get my camera back :) Starling October 9th, 2010, 8:41 pm I can knit very neatly and evenly, I just make a complete pig's ear of it when I have to count. And I always make mistakes. So it's scarves all the way. Has anyone tried illusion knitting? There's a great pattern with the dark mark on it. I've done two smallish-medium sized ones that I got framed and are hanging up in my bedroom, but I mostly did Xmas and birthday cards because they were smaller and easier to do  I've not done any in ages though because college work got in the way and now my mum's stopped doing it so I'd have to go out and buy my own stuff if I wanted to start up again :p I've never tried knitting, I think it would be good to try to learn though. I'd probably never use anything I made because I'd be too scared of it getting dirty or something  Night_Sarabande April 17th, 2012, 5:40 am Oh yay! A fellow cross-stitcher! I'm currently working on four projects at the same time: a picture of Pope John Paul II, a picture of Jesus, a picture of the Titanic, and a picture of a little girl with a goose beside her. They're all very detailed, and I'm looking forward to finishing them. lol River_Slytherin April 21st, 2012, 6:34 pm I actually knit with a knifty knitter. I am anxious to learn how to knit with the needles. |
