Want to help stop world hunger? Want to be a better reader and writer? Then play this game. It gives you hard vocabulary words, and you have to say what you think the word means. For every word you get correctly, they donate 10 grains of rice to help end world hunger.

Edit: They now donate 20 grains of rice per word :tu:

I think the highest you start out at is 40, then you just go up from there if you keep getting them right. I think I've missed every level 43 word .

I managed to get pretty high last night, to about 43 or 44, but once she left I dropped back down. On my own, my highest was 38, but I usually struggle around 35.

I had to force myself to stop playing last night, though! It was so fun, and I was so addicted, but I had to shower, so I was telling myself, ok, stop at 1500, ok, no, at 2000. But it's for a good thing!!

The highest I ever got on that was 130 grains of rice, stopped though, since a friend of mine thought it might be some kind of scam site or something.

I doubt it's a scam site, it really is connected to the World Food Programme. What I wonder though, is if you go to http://www.poverty.com (which it says is its sister site) how they have photos and names of the hunger deaths this hour?

Whoa! It IS addicting! :D I don't think it's a scam...well put together website with sponsors listed at the bottom...seems legit to me. :) 870 grains so far...I'm on level 32. (and the only thing that has gotten me this far is learning how to break words down into their smaller latin forms in Medical Terminology. ;))

Well that's good -- I would have hate for it to have been one.

Hello, everyone. The Free Rice thread has something like this, so I'm sure this thread will be okay too.

The Breast Cancer site is having trouble getting enough people to click on their site daily to meet their quota of donating at least one free mammogram a day to an underprivileged woman.

It takes less than a minute to go to their site and click on "donating a mammogram" for free (pink window in the middle).

This doesn't cost you a thing.
Their corporate sponsors/advertisers use the number of daily visits to donate mammogram in exchange for advertising.

The Breast Cancer Website (http://www.thebreastcancersite.com/clickToGive/home.faces?siteId=2)

Please, everyone, just go click the pink button!! It will only take a few seconds and it is such a worthwhile cause!

I've gotten up to 42 or 43, but then dropped back down to about 38.

Got it up to 47 but couldn't stay that high. It's strangely addictive and frustrating at the same time

That's the highest I've managed as well. It's hard to get higher than that when I'm generally going on a hunch above 44

That's really a great site. Thanks for the link!!
Unfortunatelly since english is not my first language my donations are quite small (100 to 140 grains at time), since I'm not using a dictionary for help. Sometimes I get words that not even guessing I can get it right, like scintilla and consumptive. The idea is really awesome: you have fun, learn and help people in need!

Well I cheated - I got it up to 49 on my own but couldn't hold it so I went to Dictionary.com

I don't think you can get any higher

You have now donated
30120 grains of rice.

That was fun :P I got up to 43. never used a dictionary, though I definitely thought about it.

Wow. This thing is addictive.

So far, I've managed to get up to 45 without cheating.

Found it amusing that "Enervate" came up meaning "to weaken" -- makes me wonder what dictionary JKR's been using

edit

48 now, with 11,420 grains of rice... and a Doxy is a mistress? Interesting...

edit #2

Right... 42,000 grains of rice. I think it's time to call it a night. Best I managed was 49 (without cheating).

edit #3

I decided to give it one more try and finally got it up to 50 with "argil = clay"! (and still no cheating :p)

Here's another website for those interested in helping out with various causes:

care2.com (http://care2.com)

It has all sort of information on various issues, but the best part is that each visit helps to save the rainforest and you have to option to sign any number of petitions related to various causes. There is also this program called "butterfly rewards" - you sign up (for free) and earn various "rewards" based on simple things such as sending an ecard on their website (their ecards are ADORABLE and each one sent saves a certain amount of the rainforest), signing a petition, taking their 'daily action' etc....you then can "spend" these rewards to do such great things as offset a carbon footprint, save a child with antibiotics, buy lunch for a starving child...there's tons listed! For 10,000 reward points, you can even give some loan money to someone in Peru/Uganda (I think?) to help with a woman's personal business. It's incredible because you can do such simple things, save up, and really make a difference...all for FREE!!!!

Here's info. on their butterfly rewards program: http://www.care2.com/rewards/

Check it out. :)
