carino November 9th, 2007, 11:58 pm I can't be the only person here who listens to soundtracks. Am I?
So tell me your favorites, cause I need some new ones to buy!
Personally, one of my favorite composers is Hans Zimmer. I also like James Horner.
The best soundtracks? My favs right now are Pirates, Zorro, and Da Vinci Code. And though I don't own it....some of the music from To Kill A Mockingbird is amazing. It captures the mood perfectly!
So, what do you think??
themagickeeper November 12th, 2007, 7:03 am I'm soundtrack addicted!!
I love hans zimmer, john williams, george fenton, harry gregson williams, patrick doyle, rachel someone (she did Nicolas Nicklebey) Dario Marianelli, Adrian Johnston (although he stole the Becoming Jane theme from Little Women).
Pirates of the Caribbean, Producers, Zorro, Forrest Gump, LOTR, Narnia, Kingdom of Heaven, Phantom of the opera, Little Women, Pride and Prejudice, are just SOME of the soundtracks I own. PLus I download lots of quirk peices of music off the internet, like stuff from the holiday etc
Hes November 12th, 2007, 9:19 pm I really like soundtracks from Asian movies, especially Chinese and Japanese.
Favourite composers are Tan Dun (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero) Shigeru Umebayashi (2046, House of Flying Daggers, In the Mood for Love) and Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle)
MmeBergerac November 13th, 2007, 5:18 pm Let's say first that John Williams is a genious, and almost everything he writes is great. Jaws, Star Wars, ET, Close Encounters of the Third Kind (the part of the conversation between the aliens and the humans is just superb), Schindler's List...
Hans Zimmer and James Horner are good, but have a problem: they tend to copy themselves. Once you've heard the soundtracks of Legends of the Fall, Braveheart and a couple more, they all sound too much alike one to another. And it happens the same with Zimmer, though he gave me a pleasant surprise with the Da Vinci Code and Batman Begins (well, here he collaborated with James Newton Howard).
We can't forget Jerry Goldsmith! He wrote music for dozens of films of every kind (from westerns to science-fiction), and he sounded always fresh and new.
More, more... The Lord of the Rings is a great score, too, though I prefer the soundtrack of the second movie. And Danny Elffmann, especially when he's working for Tim Burton? Batman, Eduard Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, The Nightmare before Christmas, Corpse Bride...
Well, I should say that I liked the soundtrack of Copying Beethoven... But it's almost impossible to make a movie about Beethoven with a bad music.
succubus November 13th, 2007, 5:42 pm Two that I enjoy spring to mind - The Red Violin soundtrack with the excellent Joshua Bell on violin and The Piano soundtrack composed by Michael Nyman.
themagickeeper November 14th, 2007, 1:41 am The Heart Asks Pleasure First is one of the most beautiful pieces of piano music I have ever heard - good to dance to as well!
I agree with Hans Zimmer - Mum and I have a guess the composer game that we play when we watch movies, and usually I can tell if it is Zimmer, cos he has that distincitve sound
Watched V for Vendetta the otehr night - good soundtrack too!
MmeBergerac November 14th, 2007, 4:14 pm Yes, the soundtrack of V for vendetta is a very good one. Marianelli seems to be very versatile, he can write things as unlike as Vendetta and Pride and Prejudice. Though I must say it, my favourite track in the soundtrack wasn't Marianelli's... it's Cry me a River! I love Julie London's voice.
BabyCarrot November 16th, 2007, 10:10 am The Fountain and Requiem For A Dream
Hawkowl November 16th, 2007, 1:54 pm My favorites are the LotR soundtracks, the Revenge of the Sith, PotC3, Lemony Snicket's a Series of Unfortunate Events, and the Village.
Pretty much anything by John Williams or Hans Zimmer is good, though I agree that Zimmer can be a bit repetitive.
James Newton Howard's other soundtracks are good as well, but the Village has Hilary Han in it.
I think this is the third soundtrack thread I've posted in - the others were called What's your favorite soundtrack, in the Great Hall, and Music from the movies, from the Movie discussion forum.
LoonyMagic November 17th, 2007, 4:12 pm I love the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack :D It's just beautiful
I also love the LotR and Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks - they're just so perfect and are great to listen to at any time :)
Hamka November 18th, 2007, 7:37 pm I love movie soundtracks especially the once from the lotr movies!
I will see Howard Shore live next sunday .. cant wait!
pints November 18th, 2007, 9:08 pm Empire Records: great movie, better soundtrack.
Fawkesfan1 November 22nd, 2007, 6:11 am I'm not a big fan of soundtracks myself, but if I had to pick a favorite... the soundtrack to the LOTR movies is pretty good. Don't have a copy of it though, but I like to listen to it in the movies themselves :).
dobbylikesme November 22nd, 2007, 8:53 am LotR has the best soundtracks in the history of movies, hands down.
My current favourite though is the soundtrack for the Jodie Foster movie "Anna and the King". It has subtle Asian influences, nice walzes, and a beautiful song titled "How Can I Not Love You" *swoon*
Also one of my current favourites is the soundtrack for the first season of Lost.
Last but not least I really enjoy the soundtracks for the 4th and 5th HP movies.
Somebody also mentioned "Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon", I have one theme from that movie on my iPod, and I really love it. My brother is a soundtrack junkie, so he refers me to really good music sometimes. Btw he feels that the PotC Main Theme is a rip off of the Gladiator main theme, but I don't think so. They're only slightly similar.
ParanoidAndroid November 22nd, 2007, 11:10 pm I really like soundtracks with original scores and The Mission is one of my favourites. I have not listened to the whole thing, but "Gabriel's Oboe" is my favourite piece of music ever written for a movie.
HouseStark November 23rd, 2007, 5:20 am LOTR and POTC, along with anything by John Williams
interferon November 27th, 2007, 12:36 am Fist Pirates of the caribbean: best pump up soundtrack every
Black Hawk Down: pure genius
LOTR and Star Wars of course.
I find that often I like the soundtracks that don't follow the straight orchestral format and branch out to include other instrumentation (ex: the Departed)
yyyiiilllaaannn November 30th, 2007, 1:17 am Fist Pirates of the caribbean: best pump up soundtrack ever
I so agree!
I love the Lion King Soundtrack too.
dobbylikesme November 30th, 2007, 7:59 am I have another current favourite: James Bond - You Only Live Twice
My brother gave it to me. Best Bond movie has the best soundtrack also.
FireSlytherin December 6th, 2007, 4:17 am Have any of you had a favorite movie composition/ sound track? I know I've had a lot I love all the music for pirates of the caribbean and from Miyazaki's movies. The way they are composed and arranged it's awesome. I like the way the rhythems all go together to fit the notes and create the songs.
permafrost December 10th, 2007, 5:27 am Well, I suppose some movie soundtracks fit in Pop, but there's not really a good place for this; some are classical, country...
My favorite soundtracks are: Pan's Labyrinth, Shrek 2, LOTR, Pirates, Harry Potter... oddly only one of those is Pop.
What's Your Favorite?
nvrmind i'm taking it off.. there's already a soundtrack thread
nvrmind i'm taking it off
jk i dont think i can... i'll just wait for a moderator to do it.. losiento
Montse December 11th, 2007, 1:44 pm Im an old erson so dont laugh at me ,but I love karate kid´s soundtrack ...
onyxdiggory December 24th, 2007, 2:09 am Easy... Pirates, anything by Danny Elfman i.e. Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, Charlie and the Charlie Factory
Hermy_ December 24th, 2007, 5:05 pm I have really taken a liking to the Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix Soundtrack. It has great music and it's fun to listen to in the movie.
Weazleby December 24th, 2007, 7:36 pm I love movie soundtracks. Most of my friends think it's a little wierd, but I just love them. Anything by Hans Zimmer (The Holiday, Pirates 3, etc., etc.), Thomas Newman (Finding Nemo, American Beauty), Tyler Bates (300), and the ever-amazing, brilliant John Williams. John Williams did the first three Harry Potter scores, but my favorite was PoA. It was brilliant. But, then again, he is brilliant, so it makes sense. I'll have to think of some others that I love, that also happen to be on my iPod.
onyxdiggory December 24th, 2007, 8:20 pm I know.. I downloaded The Quidditch Match and formed an obsession with Soundtrack music... we played music by Danny Elfman in a marching show last year and I played Pirates in like 7th grade
MHPFAN December 24th, 2007, 9:45 pm I really like the Hairspray CD. It's just nice because it reminds me of Grease. :) I love that musical. :D
FireSlytherin December 25th, 2007, 6:19 pm Yeah we did Pirates for our spring concert last year. We played the first one but now I want to do the second one, it had the Davy Jones song in it and I love that song like crazy. It's almost like a dark/evil waltz to me.
Yeah my favorite sound tracks have to be first, Chamber of secrets and then Goblet of Fire, I don't have OOtP yet but I got a walmart and barnes and noble gift card so maybe I will buy it myself, but then there is also the movie I need to get T_T
Kate Johnson December 26th, 2007, 3:26 pm Virtually anything by John Williams, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith and the other Potter music composers. I love films with plenty of orchestral music, like the Potter and PotC films, it's much better to listen to while I'm doing Uni work. I love soundtracks like those from Hairspray and The Producers but find them far, far too distracting and end up singing along!
I don't own nearly as many orchestral movie soundtracks as I'd like to though, maybe I'll have a look for some in the post-Christmas sales
Fury December 26th, 2007, 5:00 pm Haven't had a chance to listen to the Harry Potter OoTP soundtrack yet, but I love the HP GoF soundtrack. I love the songs with words and the instrumental songs... Quididitch Match song on there is awesome!
Other ones I love:
Armageddon
Grease and Grease 2
Haven't had a chance to listen to many...
I also love "Requiem for a Tower" (POA) and "Hedwig's Theme" (SS/PS)
Hawkowl December 26th, 2007, 10:56 pm All right, this is the fourth soundtrack thread I've posted in so far, and the fifth that I've seen.

Weazleby December 27th, 2007, 9:37 pm Well, just recently I mosied on over to the theatres and I saw Enchanted. I immediately came home to download the soundtrack from iTunes. I loved it! "True Love's Kiss" hit just the right note between tongue-in-cheek and Disney sugary-sweet. I recommend you go over and listen to the first three songs, at least.

Yes thanks for letting the whole world know. However if anything you should be going after the ones in another forum that are double done. We are going over Movie sound tracks as musicians not whats our favorite and what not. This is the musicians forum and we are all (for the most part) musicians.
Virtually anything by John Williams, Danny Elfman, Jerry Goldsmith and the other Potter music composers.
I know same here. The music really works with the movies. Especially the John Williams and Elfman. I adore the music from Phantom of the Opera it has to be one of my top 3 favorites (Harry Potter, Pirates and Phantom of the Opera)
Freak of nature January 9th, 2008, 6:05 pm The Labyrinth (with David Bowie ^^). I just love the movie and it's soudtrack, specially the ninth song on the album :) David Bowie did so good as Jareth the Goblin King that just imagining the movie while I listen it's soundtrack brings a huge smile on my face.
Pirates of the Caribbean At World's end Once again the ninth one rules. The Parlay... it gives me goosepumps everytime. The guitar *dreamysigh*. The whole soundtrack is awesome and nothing like the first two.
Phantom of the Opera(the Webber one ^^) Absolutely gorgeus! 'nuff said.
xmermaidx January 29th, 2008, 5:59 am It's not pop, and it's not really a soundtrack (=] So I shouldn't be typing, but oh well.), but I love all the music in The Little Mermaid. Beautiful songs and music!
Tart February 2nd, 2008, 7:33 pm Harry Potter...Star Wars...the Patriot...Almost Famous...Dazed and Confused...Detroit Rock City..to name a few.
GrangerHermione February 6th, 2008, 5:54 pm Well, pretty much the only soundtrack I own is the LotR soundtrack. But I am completely satisfied with that. The LotR soundtrack is AMAZING. I listen to it all the time, and I never get tired of it. The music is just so powerful and moving. Sometimes it gets so soft that I have to turn the volume up, and then the next minute, I have to turn it back down because there was a climax to the music. It really goes up and down a lot and I really like the way it flows. :tu: It is just such breathtaking music.
But, if I could have another soundtrack to listen to, I think I'd choose PotC. :) It sounds really good in the movies, and I'd like to own it.
lovehedwig February 16th, 2008, 8:44 pm I've been listening to Thomas Newman, lately. Actually, just The Shawshank Redemption original score. The music is just so beautiful and haunting, especially The Shawshank Prison (Stoic Theme). I can never get sick of it. :D
katana February 20th, 2008, 10:10 am My ultimate favorite soundtrack is 'Last of The Mohicans'. It's one of my fave movies too. Lately it's been alot of 'Spiderman', 'Order of The Phoenix', 'Transformers' - the instrumental one, not the one with a bunch of different singing artists, and I love 'Man From Snowy River' and 'Braveheart'.
LadyLucious March 3rd, 2008, 9:09 pm My favourites are Amelie, Atonement, Pirates of the Caribbean & Sweeney Todd
frag12 March 7th, 2008, 4:21 pm Im an old erson so dont laugh at me ,but I love karate kid´s soundtrack ...
Nothing wrong with that...i myself am a big fan of the Top Gun soundtrack and i'm a young person..........
PureBloodGirl March 27th, 2008, 1:35 am I love the High School Musical 2 sountrack! Great summer tunes!
goonie102 April 8th, 2008, 3:40 am Titanic, Harry Potter Are My Favourites
DeliciousMoon April 8th, 2008, 6:31 am I really like the soundtracks to Titanic, Chicago, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
goonie102 April 8th, 2008, 4:11 pm I really like the soundtracks to Titanic, Chicago, and Pirates of the Caribbean.
Yes There Are Very Nice Too
GrangerHermione April 10th, 2008, 8:11 pm Right now I am listening to the Phantom of the Opera soundtrack. It's such amazing music. It's almost like listening to the actual movie because practically all of the movie is singing and it's all included in the soundtrack. Everyone on the soundtrack all have incredible voices.
Hardcore_Raver April 10th, 2008, 8:46 pm My favourite soundtracks where already existing songs are used in the film are Trainspotting, Rushmore, Jackie Brown, and Human Traffic.
My favourite scores/soundtracks with songs written especially for the film are Jurassic Park, Lord of the Rings, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Corpse Bride, and most Disney films.
WoahFroggie April 11th, 2008, 6:28 pm For sure, Pirates is probably my fovorite. I just purchased the Juno Soundtrack and its good,(maybe cuz i liked the movie so much)..Oh also The Pianist, Titanic of course..much more that i cant think of at the momment. My mom loves to buy the soundtracks from movies she likes so theres plenty floating around the house :p
__SaRaH__ April 29th, 2008, 8:18 pm POTC was amazing, the LOTR soundtrack was wonderful. But I esp. like the Pride & Prejudice one, it was light, cheery, romantic...
hershlag May 5th, 2008, 9:51 am dog Fight soundtrack and Frida soundtracks are the best for me
as well as Kill Bill Volume 1 + 2
Fury May 6th, 2008, 2:58 pm The Labyrinth (with David Bowie ^^).
'nuff said.
Awesome choices! All three of them.
I love every song (at least verbal ones) on the Labyrinth soundtrack.
I absolutely love (and it is also one of my favorite movie songs) "Hoist the Colors High" from PoTC 3.
And Phantom of the Opera, most of the songs on there are just brilliant.
Also, I forgot to mention one. I have the "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou" soundtrack. I love every song on there!
adorkable May 6th, 2008, 6:06 pm I really like soundtracks from Asian movies, especially Chinese and Japanese.
Favourite composers are Tan Dun (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Hero) Shigeru Umebayashi (2046, House of Flying Daggers, In the Mood for Love) and Joe Hisaishi (Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle)
I used to own the Spirited Away soundtrack but I don't know what happened to it. That was one of my favourites a while ago.
Has anyone seen Once, or listened to its soundtrack? I absolutely love the songs. After I saw the movie, I instantly knew that I had to buy the soundtrack. All of the songs are played acoustically (the combined sounds of the guitar and piano sound lovely together!) and they never feel, well, overproduced (or forced; there's a very natural sound to them).
marauderfan May 7th, 2008, 2:11 am Pirates of the Caribbean and LotR have great soundtracks
although I must say.... Disney sountracks are awesome :p
padfootrules May 7th, 2008, 4:39 am My favorite soundtracks are from the films Juno and the garden state cause its full of indie music :D But the one soundtrack I have loved since I was five is the Little Mermaid soundtrack and to this day I think "Kiss the Girl" is the most romantic song I have ever heard
Raven_Girly May 7th, 2008, 1:09 pm My favorite soundtracks are from the films Juno and the garden state cause its full of indie music :D
Same here. I absolutely adore these two soundtracks.
But the one soundtrack I have loved since I was five is the Little Mermaid soundtrack and to this day I think "Kiss the Girl" is the most romantic song I have ever heard
The Lion King soundtrack was my favourite thing in the world when I was growing up.
gipro2003 May 7th, 2008, 3:31 pm I'm actually a very big fan of the HP soundtracks, especially OotP, PS/SS, and CoS. The PoTC and Phantom of the Opera soundtracks are really nice as well.
I also really like the Shrek and Shrek 2 soundtracks.
Fury May 7th, 2008, 5:18 pm But the one soundtrack I have loved since I was five is the Little Mermaid soundtrack and to this day I think "Kiss the Girl" is the most romantic song I have ever heard
Agreed! Or one of the most romantic songs, at least. I absolutely love it!
Mad_Druid May 8th, 2008, 3:40 pm My favourite soundtracks are The Fellowship of the Ring and The Secret Garden (1994 movie). They're both so beautiful.
PureBloodGirl May 13th, 2008, 9:54 pm I am downloading the Batman Begins soundtrack as soon as I can get my Mp3 player to work again. I absolutly love the Batman Begins soundtrack. The music in the movie was amazing, especially towards the end!
Gaian May 14th, 2008, 10:49 am I have many soundtracks, I love ootP soundtrack, Hooper did a very good job. I also love Robin Hood, Prince of thieves. I bought it for Bryan adams, and finaly I found the whole soundtrack very good. A romantic one is the English patient (Gabriel Yared won an Oscar for this music), really beautiful.
Of course, John Williams is a master, I have PS/SS and Return of the jedi. The very first one I bought is The big blue, and it's still one of my favorites.
VickyWild May 28th, 2008, 10:03 pm Donnie Darko.
Oliver!
Peruvian May 29th, 2008, 1:34 pm John williams makes the most awesome soundtracks ever!!!
Gaian May 29th, 2008, 2:23 pm John williams makes the most awesome soundtracks ever!!!
I agree. He made a lot of soundtracks, and though his style is somewhat recognizable, they are really different. The "Seven years in Tibet" soundtrack is wonderful with cello solos by Yo-Yo Ma.
Raven_Girly May 29th, 2008, 4:18 pm I also really like the Shrek and Shrek 2 soundtracks.
:agree: I like those too. I also like the original Charlie's Angels soundtrack. Has a nice mix of modern and retro tunes on it.
HermyMacGo June 1st, 2008, 2:08 pm I'm obsessed with LOTR so of course the soundtracks of the three movies are among my favourites. I especially like "Gollum's song", "Riders of Rohan", "The Bridge of Kazad Dum" and "Concerning Hobbits".
Other than that, I like the soundtracks from O'Brother and Lords of Dogtown, as well as Titanic, Juno, Darjeeling Limited, Into the Wild, and the french movies Taxi and Taxi 2.
Kitunen June 1st, 2008, 7:17 pm I really like the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks...all three of them. They're good for studying for me...there's no words to get distracted by, but they're not like...the stereotypical "classical" studying music either...
I recently got the August Rush soundtrack...it's not the best, but I like some of the songs...especially the instrumental ones.
jordmundt6 June 2nd, 2008, 4:00 pm Soundtracks--Hmm. This is an interesting subject for me. As a Diamondhead, of course I love The Jazz Singer. Phenomenon ('96) was one of those lightning in a bottle moments--and confession time, while I love most Disney soundtracks, I was initially caught in the whole Titanic experience and fell asleep listening to that soundtrack for more than a year. More recently, I've enjoyed soundtracks for Invincible (basically the softer side of the '70s with just enough bite to be fun) and The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe. I have made the mistake of purchasing a soundtrack for one song (I bought the Practical Magic CD for the pop version of Faith Hill's "This Kiss").
The Evita sountrack (Madonna version) was pretty solid from top to bottom, but my two favorite pieces (Anthony Banderas's "Governments Fall" solo that introduced Peron and "Let's Hear it For the Rainbow Tour") were given very short shrift. Banderas' solo wasn't even on the CD. There was a two-month period where I couldn't get "Oh, It's Sad When a Love Affair Dies" out of my head--for reasons I'll never comprehend.
Thanks for the warning about August Rush, but I have to say, I really enjoy the way the film presents its soundtrack.
MmeBergerac June 9th, 2008, 6:32 pm I liked the Titanic soundtrack, but I ended up absolutely fed up with it. When the movie came out you couldn't go anywhere without hearing the song, and everyone had it on their CD's, and... Uf, just saturating. I still think it a good soundtrack, though Horner is a bit repetitive sometimes. I liked very much the CD with the non-official soundtrack: you know, the folk songs of the thrid-class party, the orchestra playing Nearer my God to Thee (beautiful piece of music)...
hackett June 18th, 2008, 8:52 pm Briony from the Atonement soundtrack is near perfect. If you are a writer or love thrillers you should download it.
AliceLongbottom June 18th, 2008, 9:25 pm I love all of the John Williams soundtracks, including Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Memoirs of a Geisha. Also, Pirates of the Carribean is great, and so is the movie Gladiator. Wicked is also one of my favorites, too. :)
mugglesrock July 5th, 2008, 8:49 pm The Juno soundtrack is my favorite, hands down. Kimya Dawson makes me laugh.
Caliope July 25th, 2008, 3:24 pm For musical scores, I prefer Danny Elfman and John Williams - most of the Tim Burton movies (aside from Sleepy Hollow, of course, and I'm not including musicals in the 'soundtrack' category because I think it's a different kind of a thing), Star Wars, Indiania Jones, etc.
But for soundtracks, just compilations of random cool stuff that happens to be in a movie, my personal favorites are A Knight's Tale, Romeo + Juliet (the Baz Luhrmann version) and The Crow.
Flameow July 31st, 2008, 11:32 pm The Pirates soundtrack is soooo awesome :D
If you like that, then I bet you'll like the Series of Unfortunate Events soundtrack. The movie bombed (I still liked it), but the soundtrack is genius.
I would take a look at the other soundtracks in my iPod, but I can't find it at the moment. x_x
Rush August 6th, 2008, 5:23 pm Lord of the Rings - Howard Shore is a complete genius. I especially like "Concerning Hobbits" and the "Breaking of the Fellowship"
Pirates of the Carribean - All three movies have wonderful soundtracks
and finally
Brave Heart - James Horner does a wonderful job
lil_snuffles August 6th, 2008, 11:17 pm I don't own it but I have heard bits and pieces of The Dark Knight soundtrack. Its amazing. I also own all of the Harry Potter soundtracks and I listen to them all the time. :)
Fawkesfan1 August 7th, 2008, 2:31 am I was lucky enough to hear a good movie soundtrack recently, from the X-Files: I Want to Believe movie... it was one of the better ones that I've heard as of late :).
And I might plan on buying myself a copy of it later this year.
OddieM August 7th, 2008, 6:06 pm Hans Zimmer is my family's favorite. The guy is just amazing! He did the music for Pirates of the Caribbean (the last two movies) - Dead Man's Chest is my favorite - a must have if you like cello and bass. He also did the music for Gladiator, Black Hawk Down, the Lion King, the Last Samaurai, Pearl Harbor, Thelma & Louise, A League of Their Own, and Backdraft.
The soundtracks from Band of Brothers, Cotton Club, LA Confidential and Road to Perdition are also great.
drummer August 15th, 2008, 4:43 am Lion King, Titanic, Harry Potter, Schindler' List
Danny August 25th, 2008, 10:21 pm The only sound track that i own is from my favourite movie 'the lost boys' It is a great sound track and it is pretty cheap :D
GemmaBlack August 25th, 2008, 10:30 pm 10 things i hate about you has a good soundtrack and so does alot like love.
MadisonInferius August 28th, 2008, 6:12 pm I actually love soundtracks quite a lot, whether its score or a good compilation.
I like to get my classic dose of score cheese by listening to various 70s/80s horror film soundtracks. Some of my favourites include Suspiria (Goblin), Dawn of the dead (Goblin), and Zombie (Fabio Frizzi). As for more modern score, I really enjoy the work of Clint Mansell (Requiem for a Dream, The Fountain), Carter Burwell (Fargo) and Air (The Virgin Suicides).
As for compilation-style soundtrack, I adore the soundtracks for every Tarantino film. That man just knows music, I swear. So good. :)
vampiricduck August 30th, 2008, 12:33 am I love soundtracks. Really, I do. Lord of the Rings, Grease, Phantom of the Opera, Harry Potter, King Kong, the new version is particularly good, Band of Brothers, the tv series, has great music, anything Hans Zimmer, including the Prince of Egypt, which is very pretty music. Anything Disney at all, Lion King, Beauty and the Beast etc etc...
The new Batman films have wonderful soundtracks too. The Shawshank Redemption. The Green Mile...
I could go on for hours.
Luna_Lovegood12 October 13th, 2008, 6:22 am I love Harry Potter soundtracks(all of them fav song would be Window to the past), and POTC (all of them, fav song would be He's A Pirate or Up is Down), ohh! and Narnia I was SO happy there was a Prince Caspian Soundtrack I reall like The Battle and Prince Caspian Flees.
Ooh! and some anime movies like Spirited Away and Laputa. And the Star Wars ones like umm, what it called *scrolls through iPod* oh yeah! Across the Stars. Bridge to Terabithia music was really good too. And Doctor Who and Torchwood soundtracks too.
And Titanic! That was the BEST soundtrack ever!! And film! (apart from Harry Potter of course!! :))
vampiricduck October 16th, 2008, 12:13 am Star Wars are definitely worth the investment. The music is just awesome and totally drags you in. Another one I entirely recommend would be the soundtrack from Memoirs of a Geisha. It's just as beautiful as the film is! Just so painfully emotional and brilliantly fitting to the story on screen.
member_of_SPEW October 20th, 2008, 2:19 am I listen to soundtracks a lot; mostly Harry Potter and Narnia and Lord of the Rings (I've practically got that thing memorized by now).
Rush November 10th, 2008, 2:01 am I'm going to have to add the Tarzan and Hercules soundtracks to my list of favourites, which already consists of LOTR, Pirates, and Dragon Heart. Michael Boulton and Phil Collins do absolutely excellent jobs. Definitely worth recognition.
PureBloodGirl November 10th, 2008, 2:06 am The Dark Knight soundtrack and the Twilight soundtrack are amazing. The absolute best soundtrack's I have ever heard. Normally I hate classical music and that's mainly what is in the TDK soundtrack and yet I love it. I don't own them yet, but I will. I've just listened to them online.
vampiricduck November 12th, 2008, 9:00 am Just a one to mention. There's a tv series (HBO) called Band of Brothers, the soundtrack is written by a guy called Michael Kamen. It's some of the most beautiful music I've heard in a long long time, it really drags you into the tension of war without ever getting loud, or oppressive.
And The Dark Knight too has a brilliant soundtrack!!! Good choice PBG!! :D
Annielogic November 12th, 2008, 12:03 pm Love the soundtrack for all three Pirates of the Caribbean films. Almost anything my John Williams: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Harry Potter, etc. Plus the other composers who worked on the HP films too. The music for Conan the Destroyer is excellent. Robin Hood Prince of Thieves theme, also the song that goes with the movie.
lilyrose November 12th, 2008, 12:57 pm My recent fav soundtrack is the one for The Dark Knight- its brooding and perfect:tu:
But my favourite has to be the "Pride and Prejudice" (2005) Soundtrack by Dario Marianelli and performed by Jean-Yves Thibaudet (piano) and the English Chamber Orchestra. I love the way it brings to life the beauty of the British Victorian Era and its absolutely stirring!! I love it:love:
vampiricduck November 15th, 2008, 4:00 pm I love the soundtrack to Moulin Rouge!! I was listening to it last night and had totally forgotten about it, but it's brilliant!
And then I moved on to Gladiator.. and well, that's just out of this world amazing..!!
Pride and Prejudice is a beautiful one! It's just so lovely to listen to!
Fury November 19th, 2008, 3:30 pm Well, more of a mini-series than a movie with this one. Kingdom Hospital! I absolutely love two of the songs:
Worry About You - Ivy
Red Dragon Tattoo - Fountains of Wayne
I also love Danger Zone from Top Gun
Annielogic November 19th, 2008, 4:06 pm I also love Danger Zone from Top Gun
Yes, that was a very good song by Kenny Loggins.
Voldemorts8thHorcrux November 19th, 2008, 10:08 pm i only really listen to the Harry Potter ones. I LOVE john wiliams!
Annielogic November 20th, 2008, 8:09 pm i only really listen to the Harry Potter ones. I LOVE john wiliams!
:agree: He is brilliant. John Williams has done a lot of wonderful music!
xhanax315 November 21st, 2008, 3:10 am I listen to quite a few soundtracks. I love John Williams too! I love the first three Potter ones that he did, Jurassic Park, ET, Jaws, Star Wars!! He's simply amazing! :tu: So yeah I have all the Potter soundtracks, and I think GOF and OTTP are my favorites. I also have the soundtracks to Sweeney Todd, Walk the Line, and Across the Universe. I really want the Pirates of the Carribean soundtracks, especially the first one. :sigh: I'd also really like the soundtrack to Shop Girl, I love the music in the film and think it'd be splendid to listen to. There are some other ones I want, but I can't think of the names at the moment. :hmm:
I love soundtracks!
And then I moved on to Gladiator.. and well, that's just out of this world amazing..!!
I love this one as well, it is indeed amazing!

I never knew that they made soundtracks for the Band of Brothers. I love this series. I think that'd make a great soundtrack! I'll have to look for it!
vampiricduck November 22nd, 2008, 4:02 am I never knew that they made soundtracks for the Band of Brothers. I love this series. I think that'd make a great soundtrack! I'll have to look for it!
It is honestly one of the nicest ones I have heard in a long time. It makes me well up every time I hear it; there's a number of tracks specific to each episode and they're really impressive.
I just thought of another one- The Bodyguard. I love the songs used in that film, so it's one of my definitive favourites. No matter how often I see the film, the music never gets old.
Annielogic November 24th, 2008, 2:37 pm I'm going to have to buy the latest Indiana Jones film theme music, when I've saved up the money. Also, Pirates of the Caribbean!
vampiricduck November 25th, 2008, 2:01 am I'm going to have to buy the latest Indiana Jones film theme music, when I've saved up the money. Also, Pirates of the Caribbean!
Pirates of the Caribbean is a must have. :D
I went to see My Best Friends Girl the other night. I was surprised by how good the soundtrack was, even though I knew very few of the songs involved. I always notice that I like a soundtrack if my attention is drawn to the music more than the dialogue at a given moment, so I liked that one. I don't think I would buy it, but it was nice to hear an assortment of modern music like that.
My latest is Pocahontas, the Disney soundtrack. it never gets old!! :D

Disney! I was watching Basil the Great Mouse Detective earlier (yes I'm kid at heart ) I forgot that had really good music. The Lion King films are really good as well.
Beverly Hills Cop/Axel F is another theme I think is an extremely catching tune. Suits the character perfectly.
vampiricduck November 29th, 2008, 3:34 am I just heard the Stardust one. It's just... beautiful. :) I think everyone should hear it!
And for anyone here who plays video games, there's a rather amazing soundtrack for Metal Gear Solid on PS1. I don't know what the newer ones for that series were like, but the original was wonderful.
And going from games to other games, Final Fantasy Seven has the most gorgeous soundtrack in the world- which is carried over in part to the film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children. It sort of scopes classical music with heavy metal influences and comes up trumps with a great array of music.

Video soundtracks are very good sometimes. I like quite a few of the Tomb Raider soundtracks, the films as well. Also, The Mummy is really nice.
vampiricduck December 8th, 2008, 2:10 am I've just gotten back to hearing the soundtrack to A Nightmare Before Christmas. It's just brilliant. I hadn't heard it in quite some time, but it's really awesome! :D
And yesterday, I had a listen to the film version of Phantom of the Opera, which I also hadn't heard in quite some time. I think I actually prefer it to the stage edition, the voices are much clearer and Butler singing Phantom is much grittier and darker, which I think is perfect.
xhanax315 December 8th, 2008, 3:10 am I've just gotten back to hearing the soundtrack to A Nightmare Before Christmas. It's just brilliant. I hadn't heard it in quite some time, but it's really awesome! :D
I love The Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack! I listen to it a lot, especially the Oogie Boogie's song.
Ydoomrotsala December 21st, 2008, 10:11 pm Hans Zimmer, Howard Shore, Harry Gregson-Williams, Trevor Rabin, Steve Jablonsky, John Williams, James Newton-Howard, Randy Edelman, James Horner, Patrick Doyle, Nicholas Hooper, and all those other wonderful composers who create the soundtracks to our movies!
Who do you want to do the soundtrack for DH (Either part)? Personally I think Hans Zimmer would do the best job. :tu:
*Edit*
I just realized there was already a thread for movie soundtracks...Mods you can delete this if you want. >_<
NumberEight December 21st, 2008, 10:21 pm If the film is very dark, then I would go with Zimmer as well. But I'd also want James Newton-Howard to collaborate with him.
MmeBergerac December 23rd, 2008, 10:37 am No James Horner, please. I don't want DH sountrack to be a remix of other movies.
Newton-Howard, Doyle, Randy Edelman or Shore would be good choices. Perhaps Zimmer too, though he also repeats himself sometimes. And let's not forget Danny Elffmann, even if Tim Burton isn't the director.
Beatifically January 30th, 2009, 4:22 am The Chicago soundtrack would be one of my favorites. :D I just saw the musical (not the film, the actual musical it was based on) and the soundtrack has done it justice. The music is fantastic - now I just need to see the film it's in!
Aiwendil January 30th, 2009, 8:13 am The Lord of the Rings, no comparison. The music by Howard Shore, the vocalists, everything about it is absolutely spectacular. I just can't believe someone could so PERFECTLY capture the spirit of Middle-earth in music.
I have the Complete Recordings, and will probably buy the upcoming more complete Complete Recordings, too. This music is just beyond words.
Yoana January 30th, 2009, 10:10 am Has anyone listened to the soundtracks of Wong Kar Wai's films? They're magnificent, absolutely superb! They feature music from Shigeru Umebayashi, Nat King Cole, Astor Piazzolla, Xavier Cugat, Dinah Washington, Faye Wong and many others. Here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kXqAcmDtEXc)'s where you can get an idea - check out the related videos as well, they feature music from the respective soundtracks.
vampiricduck February 14th, 2009, 3:02 am Chicago and Lord of the Rings are both fantastic. Have to say Yoana, those look really interesting, I'm definitely going to check them out! :) Thanks for passing them on!
Recently great one. I found a copy of The Princess Bride in a closing down store- I had forgotten how wonderful that music is. Willy de Ville singing Storybook Love was a defining moment of my childhood, and now I hear it all the time! :D
lilyrose February 20th, 2009, 2:57 pm Recently, I love the soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire- it is totally awesome:tu::love: I'm keeping my fingers crossed for the Oscars:tu:
I also love the soundtrack of 'Revolutionary Road'. I find most of the music in that soundtrack very soft and subtle:tu: I do like the soundtrack of 'The Dark Knight' too:)
Fury February 22nd, 2009, 4:12 pm I've been listening to the Twilight Soundtrack. Definitely a lot of good music there. Has a lot of meaning to not just Twilight but the whole series of books. Great songs by good bands. Addictive songs too!
vampiricduck February 22nd, 2009, 5:40 pm I've been listening to the Twilight Soundtrack. Definitely a lot of good music there. Has a lot of meaning to not just Twilight but the whole series of books. Great songs by good bands. Addictive songs too!
I like the score by Carter Burwell- it really suits the tone of the film, and the music for action scenes is amazing. :)
Hysteria February 24th, 2009, 5:13 am The Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack is one of the best I've heard in a long time.
RainbowGurl February 24th, 2009, 5:48 am I like the Vanilla Sky soundtrack and also the Romeo and Juliet soundtrack.
JJFinch February 24th, 2009, 8:22 pm I have "The music from the Lord of the Rings" which is ablsolutely gorgeous.
lisalucy February 25th, 2009, 12:51 am Oh, the Titanic soundtrack is my favorite!! It's so beautiful and heart-wrenching!
vampiricduck February 28th, 2009, 4:01 am The Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack is one of the best I've heard in a long time.
:):) Absolutely agreed. All awards totally deserved. Without any shadow of a doubt.
gipro2003 February 28th, 2009, 2:51 pm I've listened to the "Juno" soundtrack a lot lately, and I love it. Some really interesting tracks, and the match so well with the film. :tu:
KeepItDark March 14th, 2009, 4:25 am i liked jurassic park. then, of coarse, sweeney todd.....as long as i dont have to watch the movie.
RavenLH March 28th, 2009, 11:11 pm I like soundtracks too, when I'm reading, or sleeping, I have to have noise constantly, my friends made me watch Twilight, and I found out that Robert Pattinson wrote and sang two of the songs on the soundtrack and he can sing, he did a great job, and the rest of the songs there are good too. but I like the Harry Potter soundtracks, Narnia, the one from the 1960's version of Romeo and Juliet, Pride and Prejudice, Phantom of the Opera,
skellingtonfan April 19th, 2009, 12:06 am I like the score by Carter Burwell- it really suits the tone of the film, and the music for action scenes is amazing. :)
I love the score and i think the soundtrack is awesome. But I didn't like how Bella's lullaby was so big. It should have just been a piano because that's all Edward has. I want to hear the one Rob wrote himself. But the music was gorgeous.
I love:
~ Across the Universe
~ RENT
~ Phantom of the Opera
~ Sweeny Todd
~ A Nightmare Before Xmas
~ Edward Scissorhands
~ Sleepy Hollow
~ Shakespeare in Love
~ Harry Potter movies
~ Saving Private Ryan
~ Almost Famous
I'm sure there's more, just can't think of them right now.
mactheknife May 12th, 2009, 4:01 pm my favourite soundtrack for a movie would definitley be 10 Things I Hate About You! ...i know its a chick flick, but its awesome
skellingtonfan May 15th, 2009, 10:14 pm Hey that movie was awesome and FNT by Semisonic is an awesome song lol.
vampiricduck May 17th, 2009, 2:19 am I just saw Angels and Demons. I realised after I saw the Da Vinci Code that I adored the music, and so I paid particular attention to it this time around. It's epic in an odd sort of way; the church-religious undertones are there in spades, but it adds so much to the atmosphere and tension of the film that I liked it just as much as ever.
Odd music to add to my soundtrack list, but I can't help it! :D
zoino223 May 30th, 2009, 10:31 pm I really like the soundtrack works of Thomas Newman
Jarhead and A Series of Unfortunate Events are my favorites of his
And of course, The Lord of the Rings soundtracks are just epic.
TheMarsOpera June 4th, 2009, 5:44 am I listen to a fair number of soundtracks:
Garden State
The Lion King
Phantom Of The Opera
Pirates Of The Caribbean
Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron
lilyrose June 5th, 2009, 9:26 am The recent soundtrack that blew me away was Hans Zimmer's score for Angels and Demons. Outstanding stuff! :tu:
SneakyDragon June 5th, 2009, 1:39 pm I honestly dont listen to movie soundtracks a lot. But I do like the soundtracks to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Saturday Night Fever, and A Night at the Roxbury. The Jackie Brown movie soundtrack isnt bad, either.
xhanax315 June 9th, 2009, 6:53 am The recent soundtrack that blew me away was Hans Zimmer's score for Angels and Demons. Outstanding stuff! :tu:
I love Hans Zimmer, I'll take your word for it and check it out for myself. :D
I honestly dont listen to movie soundtracks a lot. But I do like the soundtracks to The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Saturday Night Fever, and A Night at the Roxbury. The Jackie Brown movie soundtrack isnt bad, either.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show is my favorite as well. :agree:
I purchased the Dark Knight soundtrack awhile back and I wasn't entirely pleased with it. There's only a few in which I like: Harvey Two-Faced, I Am Not A Hero, and I Am the Batman. I felt as though the songs dragged on a bit.
lilyrose June 9th, 2009, 8:09 pm I'm fast becoming a major fan of Hans Zimmer :D
His soundtrack for The Holiday was perfect! Romantic, playful, beautiful, soulful- great work! :tu:
xhanax315 June 9th, 2009, 10:13 pm I'm fast becoming a major fan of Hans Zimmer :D

:agree: Oh yes! :tu:
I'm looking forward to his score for Sherlock Holmes. It's definitely going to be fascinating to listen to :D
xhanax315 June 12th, 2009, 2:53 am :agree: Oh yes! :tu:
I'm looking forward to his score for Sherlock Holmes. It's definitely going to be fascinating to listen to :D
He's doing Sherlock Holmes as well?!?! :wow: I did not know this, this is also something to look forward to.
gipro2003 June 12th, 2009, 4:24 am I'm going to have to admit my love for AR Rahman here. :D I think the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack was just brilliant.
lilyrose June 12th, 2009, 4:59 am Yes Hana, Sherlock Holmes ought to be a treat :D
I'm going to have to admit my love for AR Rahman here. :D I think the Slumdog Millionaire soundtrack was just brilliant.
:agree: I absolutely agree  Though brilliant, IMO, Slumdog is far from A.R.Rahman's best :)
My favourite movie soundtracks from A.R.Rahman would be his track for Roja, listed by Time Magazine as one among the hundred best soundtracks of all time. Brilliant stuff :tu:
Other great movie soundtracks : Bombay, Rang de Basanti, Guru, Jodhaa Akbar :tu:
I'd draw a much bigger list :D
Also, I love what I've heard from Thomas Newman's soundtrack for Revolutionary Road :tu:
Decca July 9th, 2009, 10:10 am Check out this wicked video of the orchestra conducted by Alastair King recording the original soundtrack to the new movie Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince:
http://newlinerecords.com/scores/harrypotter6/instudio_final.mov
It’s quite remarkable!!
Miss_Bellatrix August 6th, 2009, 8:53 pm I'm not that good at listening to soundtracks. I wish I were, 'cause there is so much good movie music out there:) I have heard some tough, like I have all the Harry Potter soundtrack (haven't bought the last one yet:)) I absolutely adore the PotC soundtrack, it's amazing, and I also think that LotR has some good music:) But I have gotten a lot of ideas here! I'm going to find some of the soundtracks you guys recommend:)
QuackAttack August 6th, 2009, 9:29 pm Hmm, my favorite soundtracks are from Fight Club, Moulin Rouge!, Billy Elliot, Trainspotting, and 28 Days Later.
rahmaniacc August 14th, 2009, 7:12 pm My favourite movie soundtracks from A.R.Rahman would be his track for Roja, listed by Time Magazine as one among the hundred best soundtracks of all time. Brilliant stuff
small correction here. 'Roja' was listed as one among the top 10 soundtracks of all time, not top 100 :) [obviously top 100 too ]
SiriusBrown August 25th, 2009, 2:41 am Rushmore,Garden State,Kill Bill,Pulp Fiction
planetary September 2nd, 2009, 3:38 am John Williams (Star Wars, HP), Joby Talbot (Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy) and I love Michael Giacchino's recent work for Star Trek XI. I also love musicals' soundtracks such as Sweeney Todd (and any other Tim Burton musical) and Phantom of the Opera.
HermioneG05 September 2nd, 2009, 4:59 am I liked the Titanic soundtrack, but I ended up absolutely fed up with it.
I love Titanic as well. The CD you are referring to is called Back to Titanic. I love the song where they dance in third class ("An Irish Party in Third Class") as well as "Jack Dawson's Luck."
I also love the soundtrack of 'Revolutionary Road'. I find most of the music in that soundtrack very soft and subtle
Revolutionary Road is great. One of my favorites is "Count Every Star."
Other than Titanic, Back to Titanic and Revolutionary Road, I own:
Harry Potter (just SS, but it has the main theme which is great)
Moulin Rouge
Phantom of the Opera (from the film)
Wicked
The Sound of Music
Ever After
I have lots of instrumental stuff mostly. It makes good study music and is very relaxing. There are probably a few more that I own but I cannot remember them all right now.
I am going to have to look into The Holiday's soundtrack after some of you recommended it. I love the movie, but was not sure how good the soundtrack was.
Oh and for the Disney fans in here, if you want a mix of Disney songs, they have at least 4 CDs now called Disney Classics. They each have a mix of songs from films, ranging from Bedknobs and Broomsticks and Mary Poppins to Lion King and Beauty and the Beast. I know someone who has them and she likes them.
Hysteria September 2nd, 2009, 5:42 am Moulin Rouge has a great soundtrack, but then lots of musicals do.
Queen_Princess September 2nd, 2009, 3:49 pm I really like Nick and Norah's Infinte Playlist soundtrack. I found it really good. My favourite is "Nick and Norah's" theme.
SLumdog Millionaire is amazing too. I think it's one of my favourite soundtracks. For the longest time, I couln't get "Jai Ho" out fo my head.
Tams23 September 2nd, 2009, 8:23 pm Chungking Express...
I can never listen to California Dreamin' without thinking of Faye Wong.. The music is such a big part of the movie. Love it.
And John Hugues always had really cool soundtracks too. The Breakfast Club, mmm.
Mad_Druid September 3rd, 2009, 1:04 pm I love the soundtracks to About A Boy, LotR (especially FotR) and Billy Elliot.
lcbaseball22 September 3rd, 2009, 1:39 pm The Graduate (entirely Simon & Garfunkel), Harold and Maude (entirely Cat Stevens), Forrest Gump (amazing soundtrack...soo many good songs), and the soundtrack for the first Transformers (might seem an odd choice, but I loved the mix of rock music and such used here)
Schlubalybub September 3rd, 2009, 2:37 pm My favourite film soundtrack is actually Bridget Jones's Diary. I really love all of the tracks on it
Hysteria September 3rd, 2009, 4:12 pm Kill Bill has a great soundtrack. Watched the movie (Vol 1) again today and amongst everything else I loved about it, I really paid attention to the music and it was awesome IMO.
lcbaseball22 September 6th, 2009, 6:17 am Considering this is one of my fav films of all time, I can't believe I forgot this one- soundtrack for TOP GUN!
LindaZhu September 6th, 2009, 6:20 am SLumdog Millionaire is amazing too. I think it's one of my favourite soundtracks. For the longest time, I couln't get "Jai Ho" out fo my head.
yes! A. R. Rahman is amazing, i literally had the entire soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire in my head for weeks after i first watched the movie.
DarkLord7 September 10th, 2009, 2:12 am Absolutely nothing in the whole world can beat Star Wars- The Imperial March. :D
rahmaniacc September 13th, 2009, 12:13 pm yes! A. R. Rahman is amazing, i literally had the entire soundtrack of Slumdog Millionaire in my head for weeks after i first watched the movie.
listen to the OST of Elizabeth: the golden age and Passage. Both have music scored by Rahman. The are awesome :) and there is couples retreat coming soon :)
Vig September 21st, 2009, 11:13 am listen to the OST of Elizabeth: the golden age and Passage. Both have music scored by Rahman. The are awesome :) and there is couples retreat coming soon :)
Oh, yes! Elizabeth the Golden Age has one of the most haunting background scores and I just heard Passage and the 'Waltz' and 'Atmosphere' themes in it, are simply superb.
I also adored the soundtrack of Jurassic Park, My Best Friends Wedding and Chicago! The music in these movies were awesome and added so much to the movie...:)
Clockworthy September 21st, 2009, 12:34 pm While I don't even own the soundtrack, I have listened to snips of the Kung Fu Panda soundtrack through b&n.com and my own copy of the DVD.
It's really quite amazing! :D
Wab September 21st, 2009, 2:21 pm Blues Brothers if only for the collection of blues, soul and R&B legends assembled in one place.
rahmaniacc September 25th, 2009, 5:31 pm http://www.couplesretreatsoundtrack.com/ the wait is over for me :)
xXLilyLunaXx September 26th, 2009, 3:57 pm I love all of the Lord of the Rings' soundtracks (Enya has a BEAUTIFUL voice) as well as the one from Juno, if you're just in the mood for some quirky alt-pop/rock and older songs, too.
Schlubalybub September 26th, 2009, 9:42 pm Blues Brothers if only for the collection of blues, soul and R&B legends assembled in one place.
Seconded (Although I do adore the film)
Also I love the music on The Boat That Rocked
QuackAttack September 27th, 2009, 6:30 am I love the soundtracks to About A Boy, LotR (especially FotR) and Billy Elliot.
I would agree with all of those. Had the LotR theme stuck in my head today. And I love Badly Drawn Boy and most of the songs on the Billy Elliot soundtrack (especially "Cosmic Dancer").
amanduhrae September 28th, 2009, 3:24 am I love to listen to the Harry Potter soundtrack... I love the Half Blood Prince soundtrack and I was really excited when we played a medley of the Order of the Phoenix soundtrack in orchestra and I'm even using a Harry Potter song for my scene in drama because we needed an instrumental song and Harry Potter is some of the only instrumental music I actually like to listen to.
Other soundtracks I really like are musicals like Hairspray and Mamma Mia and of course all the old school Disney movies.
HarryXGinny4evr December 15th, 2009, 2:11 am I would agree and say Zimmer. But I would like to see someone who's already composed music for the HP series to collaborate, like Nicholas Hooper.
Mad_Druid February 2nd, 2010, 11:44 am I'm in love with the Into The Wild soundtrack at the moment. 'Society', 'Hard Sun', 'No Ceiling' and 'Guaranteed' are probably my favourite tracks.
HGHPRW February 16th, 2010, 4:17 pm I like the Pirates of the Caribbean soundtracks, along with Star Trek 2009, Sherlock Holmes, Star Wars, and a few others. I think the reason I like movie soundtracks is because you have some of the best music out there incorporated into movies, because movies have much less of an impact on the audiance if the music doesn't match the scenes to provoke the desired reaction.
Mad_Druid March 10th, 2010, 9:32 am I adore the soundtrack to Velvet Goldmine; the combination of original, covered, and new glam rock material is perfect. My favourite track is probably 'Bitter-Sweet'. Also, the About A Boy soundtrack is wonderful; I consider it to be some of Badly Drawn Boy's best work. 'Silent Sigh' is a real standout.
MistressofRaven March 10th, 2010, 9:09 pm I do listen to soundtracks, but I mostly listen to specific songs from soundtracks. I love Eternal Sunshine, Billy Elliot, CAMP, Deadwood (the tv show), Pee Wee's Big Adventure (The theme to this is so amazing even though it was ripped off from an earlier classical song), Angels in America (mini series), Gosford Park (Ivor Novello's music is wonderful), Little Shop of Horrors, Death Proof. In short, too many.
The best soundtracks I've ever heard are Frida, The Hours and The Matrix. The music for The Matrix just goes so perfectly with the movie.
Gladheon March 26th, 2010, 5:17 am I think my favourite soundtracks are Lotrd of the Rings and Pirates.
John_Dawlish March 27th, 2010, 1:22 am The Darjeeling Limited has a great soundtrack, but then again it depends on if you enjoy Indian music (which I do).
MHPFAN March 27th, 2010, 3:04 am Not really a soundtrack per se, but I'm addicted to the Wicked musical CD. I can't get enough!!!
theboywholived8 March 27th, 2010, 5:33 am The Darjeeling Limited has a great soundtrack, but then again it depends on if you enjoy Indian music (which I do).
Wes Anderson films feature some great music. I enjoy the soundtrack to The Royal Tenebaums and, Fantastic Mr. Fox has some inspired musical moments as well.
I love, love, love anything by John Williams. Some of my favorites of his are The Empire Strikes Back, Catch Me If You Can, Schindler's List, and Prisoner of Azkaban, but of course there are many others.
Lately, I've been listening to the Death Proof soundtrack nonstop. Quentin Tarantino meticulously chooses the tracks for his movies, and I must say the films wouldn't be the same without that attention to detail. My favorite song of the soundtrack is "Baby It's You" by Smith-the vocalist is phenomonal.
Here's a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8_uGlUxZ1J4
This live version doesn't live up to the album version, but they all look so cool :)
I should also mention the soundtrack to Pride and Prejudice (2005) composed by Dario Marianelli. I especially love to listen to album while it's raining. For some reason, it's very fitting.
Hysteria March 28th, 2010, 5:27 am I adore the soundtrack to Velvet Goldmine; the combination of original, covered, and new glam rock material is perfect.
After having watched this movie I 100% agree. I think it's probably my favourite movie sountrack, all the songs are just so wonderful. I particularly like Placebo's cover of 20th Century Boy and Bitter Sweet (The Venus In Furs).
The Kill Bill movies and Pulp Fiction had pretty good sountracks too. PF's sountrack sounded great with the included cut scenes IMO.
HarryCanyon March 31st, 2010, 12:54 am Me loves movie soundtracks by my three faves are to the Star Wars OT (Original Trilogy), The Dark Crystal and Heavy Metal (Both rock soundtrack and Elmer Bernstein score).
Fury April 6th, 2010, 1:16 am Anyone listen to the new Alice In Wonderland movie's soundtrack? I absolutely love "Her Name is Alice" by Shinedown. It's AMAZING!
xhanax315 May 1st, 2010, 4:22 am My obsession for HBP soundtrack has finally died down, not that I'm not still listening to it, just not as much. My new obsession is the LotR: The Fellowship of the Ring. It's simply amazing!

Erm okay, this isn't the soundtrack. It's a cd comprised of artists who've remade some of the songs or something. The original soundtrack is by Danny Elfman.

Yeah the one Fury was talking about was Almost Alice which is songs done by random artists apparently inspired by the new movie (which IMO is a compilation of a bunch of terrible artists with even worse songs, but that's just me).

That's exactly how I feel. I made the mistake in thinking it was the actual soundtrack, until I placed it in my cd player. :grumble: I regret the money spent on it. :sigh:
MmeBergerac May 26th, 2010, 4:39 pm This is a thread to discuss any bit of classical music we've ever found in movies.
Some movies, from 2001 or Barry Lindon to X-Men, have classical music in their soundtracks; in others, classical music is a main part of the plot, like in Le Concert or Meeting Venus; sometimes the characters of a movie tlike or play classical music as a hobby, as in Philadelphia, Match Point or Master and Commander (well, Aubrey & Maturin played contemporary music... their contemporary music, I mean :)).Of course, some movies are biopics or classical composers or players (Amadeus, Copying Beethoven, The Pianist, Hillary and Jackie).
So... Do you like when directors use classical music in their movies? Best cases? Worst cases? Have you ever unexpectedly found a piece of classical music in a movie that has nothing to do with it? Do directors who include classical music usually fall in clichés (scientists listening to Bach, bad people listening to Wagner)? How much have Pretty Woman or The Sleeping Beauty helped to make classical music known (after all, almost any woman under 40 years old has seen a couple of scenes of La Traviata, and my 4-years-old cousin sings Tchaikovski's tunes whenever she watches the movie)?
APolaris June 16th, 2010, 5:14 am Pride & Prejudice (1995) has a number of these cases. The easiest to notice and identify is "Voi Che Sapete" from "The Marriage of Figaro," which is in fact classical, but there are many others as well. Mary notably sings (very poorly) a rendition of the Xerxes overture by Handel. The website "Republic of Pemberley" has a complete list of the songs.
A Clockwork Orange used classical music, such as William Tell Overture and Pomp and Circumstance, to comedic effect during some of its more sadistic as well as mundane scenes.
2001: A Space Odyssey made good use of the Blue Danube, IMO the second best piece ever written about a river (The Moldau takes first by a very, very wide margin).
APolaris June 16th, 2010, 11:14 pm My list:
#5. The Shawshank Redemption. I wouldn't even know about Thomas Newman if it weren't for this one. His stoic theme sets the mood for what some call the single greatest introduction to a film setting ever made. The Mozart scene is well-done, particularly considering I consider Mozart himself overrated and it still impressed me. Composing the soundtrack for the single most triumphant scene in any movie (Andy's escape into the rainstorm), despite being little noticed, is an accomplishment in itself.
#4. Sense and Sensibility (1995). "My Father's Favorite" is the second most moving piano song I know of, even more so when taken in the scene's context. Beyond this, it has two finely played and sung tunes that convinced me Kate Winslet has any actual talent (something of which I was very strongly convinced to the contrary after watching "Titanic"). I call this Patrick Doyle's finest hour.
#3. Star Wars. Williams' themes here are not as exceptional as they are for my #2 and especially not for my #1, but this one focuses more on diversity. Binary Sunsets is the loveliest single theme under 1 minute that I've heard. The Asteroid Field (from Episode V) is competitive with the Rohan theme from Lord of the Rings for most epic. The title theme is legendary, though IMO a bit overrated compared to the rest. And the scene music in between that you barely pay attention to is finely done in itself.
#2. Jurassic Park. It has two major themes, both of which are among the best of John Williams' work (barring my #1 since it's a special case). When you hear the more intense theme, you feel the epic power contained within. The calmer theme could have been written by a Romantic period composer and you would not have been able to tell the difference.
#1. Schindler's List. The most mind-blowing piece of musical work written since The Moldau well over a century ago by Smetana, and never surpassed before then either. Nothing ever written can touch the sheer emotion encompassed by this tune - NOTHING. The other soundtracks on this list only impress you or touch your heart. Schindler's List has just one major theme, but that one major theme stirs your soul; it changes you into another person the instant you've heard it. I know nobody - NOBODY, not even non-orchestra fans - that can listen to Itzhak Perlman's violin in this soundtrack without being driven to tears. I've heard it over 1,000 times and STILL have yet to get through it without being affected.
Though I didn't include their movies on the list, I have to give honorable mention to Howard Shore for Lord of the Rings (the Riders of Rohan is the most epic piece I've heard in a film, with the title and Gondor's, Mordor's, and the Fellowship's themes all excellent as well) and Hans Zimmer (mostly for The Last Samurai and Gladiator, but also The Thin Red Line, the Lion King, and maybe Pirates of the Caribbean). Latika's Theme from Slumdog Millionaire is worth a mention, especially during the ending, even though the rest of the soundtrack was just... bleh. Also, though I find most of HP's soundtrack unexceptional, the Potter Waltz is a great song. :)
tripletkate607 June 17th, 2010, 8:49 pm I of course like the Harry Potter soundtracks, especially Goblet of Fire and Half-Blood Prince. Some of my other favorites are Lord of the Rings, Angels and Demons, The Fountain, Jurassic Park, and Sherlock Holmes. And all those other ones APolaris mentioned above me. :)
APolaris June 21st, 2010, 3:50 am Here's one that I hope will never be lost to history, a classic built entirely around existing music (therefore it had no soundtrack of its own), perhaps Disney's highest-quality film ever: Fantasia. I look back on it and I think "holy hell, they were able to do that by hand back then?" with some of the animation. Also the musical quality for the most part is excellent (although I'm still bitter about how they butchered one of the Romantic period's true masterpieces, Waltz of the Flowers). Heck, for that matter I still look back and think "Since when has animation ever produced artistic quality on this scale before or since?"
So, just for the sake of anyone who might have missed this film over the course of their lives somehow, here are some of the best quality sequences in Fantasia:
Night on Bald Mountain (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Txo06c1k9sk) - Introduced the demon Chernabog, who is familiar to anybody that's beaten Kingdom Hearts. Also a pretty epic piece of music.
Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IYhQMAtaKls) - from The Nutcracker. Despite generally considering the song mediocre relative to some other Nutcracker pieces, I find this Fantasia's best piece from its version.
The Sorcerer's Apprentice (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XChxLGnIwCU) - I think this is the only thing that's ever made me enjoy that song. Also, one of Mickey's most iconic sequences.
Rite (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gZbMOq_Ge8) of (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGdK9jpn19w) Spring (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M16zasqydUE) - A masterful segment in three parts. Probably has the film's best animation.
And, IMO, the loveliest sequence produced for the film - which was then omitted from it.
Clair de Lune (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fLSzlBaU3jM)
MmeBergerac July 1st, 2010, 9:26 pm What always shocked me was that Lizzie sang "Voi Che Sapete" in English.
And Clockwork Orange has one of the most strange versions of Beethoven's 9th symphony I've ever heard... I haven't watched the movie, so I can't tell about Pomp and Circumstance. However, it's true that kubrik liked to include classical music in his films. The whole soundtrack of Barry Lindon is made with Handel's Sarabande (I don't remember which suite it was)
_mollywobbles_ August 20th, 2010, 4:46 am So this isn't a movie , but this is one of my favourite uses of Classical music in an advert :
It's a Big Ad (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Psc0XqcJYuY)
xhanax315 September 19th, 2010, 4:08 am Since my recent introduction to the LotR books, I had viewed the movies afterwards for the first time and I fell in love with the music. I haven't purchased Return of the King yet, but between the first two, I love the Fellowship of the Ring. It's dark and the theme fits the movies perfectly.
Beatifically October 5th, 2010, 4:43 am My favorite soundtrack would have to be from Schindler's List. The main theme is so simplistic, yet that's what makes it so emotional. There's such a strong sense of melancholy that I can't help but feel moved every time I listen to it. John Williams said that Spielberg needed a greater composer for the film, but I think he did a fine job. :tu:
My only complaint is that I think Williams should have used the cello rather than the violin. Or maybe that's just because I love the cello. :p Here's a video of someone playing the theme with a cello:
1_Hg2GgttAw
MmeBergerac October 5th, 2010, 10:40 am Violin is an instrument that's very frequently used in popular and traditional music, specially in central Europe, much more that cello. I'm sure Williams took that into account at writing the score (though yes, cello is beautiful, and this theme played with a cello sounds great). Besides, violin has that frail sound that becomes the movie so well, while cello is deeper.
N30V3N0M October 20th, 2010, 5:29 pm My favorite movie soundtracks are Queen of the Damned, Matrix & Matrix Reloaded, Pirates of the Caribbean I & II, Mortal Kombat & Mortal Kombat Annihilation, and also Equilibrium. I'm pretty sure I like more but those stick out to me at the moment.
Demonikka October 22nd, 2010, 3:27 am Memoirs of a Geisha, Queen of the Damned, Dazed and Confused, Chicago, Rent, Rocky Horror Picture Show, and Beaches.
Dobson July 21st, 2011, 8:46 pm I did a search for this but I couldn't find anything, so...
What are your favorite/least favorite movie soundtracks?
I honestly think that the soundtrack is the most important part of a film and the film can't function without it. This means that when you have a bad soundtrack, the movie rating is bound to be lowered. But films that have outstanding soundtracks add a good deal of emotion to the film, and the music can help set the theme and atmosphere better than any acting job or visual effects/set design.
Needless to say, a bad soundtrack can wreck a good film, as stated before. So another question that has to be answered is: What elements seperate good soundtracks from bad ones? I generally think the best individual pieces are the ones that are used for heart-wrenching scenes, because it shows the composer's ability to convey that emotion.
My best and worst, all based on opinion, of course:
Best: Titanic, which has a very emotional soundtrack. Inception, even though I didn't like the movie, the soundtrack was done by Hans Zimmer, so it was amazing. I know the Lord of the Rings soundtrack is quite good, but I don't know a whole lot about it.
And why not? HPDH 2 was amazing in the music department.
Worst: Hmm, this is hard. I think every soundtrack has something special to offer. I'm not going to pick here, I'll let everyone else decide.
Erinacchi July 22nd, 2011, 11:45 am There are so many composers for movie soundtracks I like. John Williams, Alan Menken and Hans Zimmer pop into my mind first. The score (and soundtrack) of Beauty and the Beast is so beautiful. Also, Star Wars score is great. Love the theme tune and Darth Vader's theme.
Pottermore July 22nd, 2011, 2:49 pm I generally don't love just movie sound tracks in general, but there are songs from many that I love!
Lux Aeterna from Requiem for a Dream
Summer Overture from Requiem for a Dream
Obliviate from HPDH1
Hedwig's Theme
Lily's Theme from HPDH2
Buckbeak's Flight from HP PoA
Time from Inception
etc.
Kings_Cross July 25th, 2011, 1:59 am When I hear the word "soundtrack" I think of a collection of already existing songs. Not like "score" which I think would be instrumental music created for the film itself. Am I right in thinking this or are the words interchangeable?
Anyway, some of my favorite soundtracks are:
Empire Records - If you love angsty 90's music LOOK NO FURTHER! Great movie, even greater soundtrack :agree:
P.S. I Love You - A very unique mix. It has a Flogging Molly song, an Etta James cover, some soul, and some pop. It's just really relaxing. I like to listen to this soundtrack on plane rides.
Inglorious Basterds/Death Proof/Just about any Quentin Tarantino movie.
HazelLumos43 September 8th, 2011, 10:22 am I recently watched Crazy, Stupid, Love, and thought it had an awesome soundtrack, especially if you lean towards indie music.
A soundtrack often contributes to a movie's success, I think. 500 Days of Summer had an awesome, quirky soundtrack, just like the content of the movie's storyline.
By the way, since we're on the topic, I thought the music in the HP: DH part 2 movie scene (when they put up charms to protect the castle) was beautiful and emotive - it made me cry.
HazelLumos43 September 14th, 2011, 10:54 am Some other good soundtracks I've thought of:
*LotR
*The Last of the Mohicans
*Gladiator
*Titanic
*Pride and Prejudice (the later one)
*Amelie
padfootrules September 19th, 2011, 10:40 pm Not a movie soundtrack but I enjoy Doctor Who soundtracks.
Fawkesfan1 September 19th, 2011, 11:07 pm I generally don't love just movie sound tracks in general, but there are songs from many that I love!
Lux Aeterna from Requiem for a Dream
Summer Overture from Requiem for a Dream
Obliviate from HPDH1
Hedwig's Theme
Lily's Theme from HPDH2
Buckbeak's Flight from HP PoA
Time from Inception
etc.
Same here. I like the HP soundtracks myself, haven't bought any, but I love to listen to them while I'm watching the movies. It helps the overall mood of the movie, in my opinion.
Williwaw October 17th, 2011, 12:32 am I have a 'thing' for movie soundtracks and therefore have a vast collection of them. Ofttimes the quality of a soundtrack can determine the difference between a good and a great film
Two soundtracks that I tend to listen to more than any others is The Last of the Mohicans and Serenity.
yorkiedoodle October 17th, 2011, 10:23 pm I love the music from Inception - amd I really liked the soundtrack from the Sherlock holmes film.
I have the last 4 Harry Potter soundtracks and whilst I love bits of the last film my favourite scores are probably the ones by Nicholas Hooper.
I also love the music in Love Actually....and the Sound of Music......
