I have one Betta fish. I used to have a whole big gallon that I would keep about 12 fish in at a time, but I haven't used that in years. I'm happy with my Betta (George), although he looks like he has a tumor or something, either that or he is really fat.

I've tried to own fish in the past, but fish are lucky if they live more than 24 hours with me.

I actually had one goldfish that lasted more than 2 years. His name was chubby and I think he stayed alive so long because he would eat other fish. We would come home from school/work and there would be a fish missing and chubby would be the slightest bit fatter...interesting.

My family's great with fish... our first few, my mum accidentally cooked by turning the heater too high on the tank (eeeh I was traumatized)... then I babysat my friend's fish for a week and the last day I came home to realise I'd left the lid on and the poor thing suffocated...

Yah. Never leave me alone with your fish.

My cousin has pirannas though. He likes to entertain his friends by feeding them live mice (err the pirannas, not his friends haha). My aunt thinks it's beyond disgusting.

I have a 20gallon freshwater tank. Any tips on getting rid of algae? I've never had such a problem with it before. I only have a few fish as I haven't replaced any that have died since I put the tank up. Currently I have an albino rainbow shark, one honey gourami, one sunset platy, one red eye tetra and 2 white cloud minnow and 4 zebra daniels. So I'm not overstocked on fish and I'm the only one feeding them.

Yeh they are really boring...

But oh well. My parents don't really like pets and all that. They would go crazy if I brought any fish bigger then that.

My brother is planning on getting some fish. He doesn't want goldfish but would like something that is low-maintenance. Any suggestions?

Several fish or just one? Because if you would like just one, I would suggest a betta fish. They are really pretty and relatively low maintainence. They do like their bowls fairly warm (they are tropical fish) so depending where you live you might need some sort of heater. But they can be kept in a very small tank and just need to be fed once or twice a day and have the water changed every few weeks or so. Not too bad, if you ask me.

Thanks! One of our major concerns was not having enough room for a large tank. He wanted a tropical fish too so this sounds ideal :)

I have an 8 year-old gold fish. His name is Sparkletts, but we just call him piglet because he would eat 24/7 if he could. He lets you pet him too. If you put your finger on the surface of the water, he'll swim up and let you pet his head. Obviously, this has nothing to do with my finger looking like food. He loves the attention.

And Druid, good luck with the beta for your brother :).

Oh, and I'm new by the way. Hi.

We have had fish for years, but my current favorite is our Black Ghost Knife. He is lovely and the way he moves through the water is hypnotizing. He is so friendly and works perfectly with all the other fish in the tank, including a betta (Fawkes) an angelfish and some others that people would not think to put together. Essentially, if the tank is large and well-planted with live plants, and if there is well enough space so they aren't fighting for turf, they will get along quite well. Ours is a 55-gallon tank.

I have had several fish over the past and now have two fish left

1)Bill (R.I.P Dropsey/Explosion)
2)Ben (R.I.P Infection)
3) Brenda Shububkins (R.I.P Natural Causes)
4) Belinda (R.I.P Infection)
5) Brian (R.I.P Infection)
6) Bozo (R.I.P Natural Causes)
7) Balice (R.I.P Infection)
8) Bray (R.I.P Infection)
9) Bluise (R.I.P Infection)
10) Barcardi (R.I.P Infection)
11) Breezer (R.I.P Broken spine)
12) Bruiser (R.I.P Broken spine)
13) Banet (alive)
14) Bob (alive)

All the fish I have had were quite dozy. Especially the thin small ones.

Thanks for the tip on the algae eater, I got some new fish finally having gotten down to 3, I've added four fantail guppies and a plecostomus. So we'll see how that works as the algae problems have continued.

I had a goldfish for about 5 years when I in elementary/middle school. We had to bury it when it died because it was so big. Unfortunately we were pretty unimaginative when it came to names, so it was just called "Mr. Fish".

:rotfl: That happened to me with one of my goldfishes. I think he lived for almost 7 years and we had to keep changing his tank, because he would out grow them. Finally I had to go to college and my mom refused to take care of him so he got handed over to our neighbors.

We just got a new fish a couple weeks ago named Aries. He is a red beta fish and he is super cool!

I name all my fish after greek gods. I have had: Posidon, Aphrodite, Athena and (sort of) Hera she died in a day and I hate to waist the name on a fish we didn't even have very long.

When I was little they named after US presidents :rotfl:.

I had a goldfish for 3 years when I was young, man, that fish would not die! Seriously, he lived foreverrrr, and it got to the point where everyone in my family forgot we even had one expect for me (because I fed him) and every once in a while they'd walk into my room and go "omg! you have a fish?!"

All is well in the tank. Algae is cleared up and all residents still with us. Soon will be time to add a few more finned friends.

I have fancy guppies
lil Napoleon, my male
Big Bertha, female
Red, female (R.I.P. birthing stress)
theres a couple minnows in with them too
Napoleon has ten children. I haven't named them yet, they are in a divider and some are starting to get tail colors! The two litters are just a day apart. At first they all looked the same..pink, tiny. But now they are starting to come to their own. There is a little one thats way smaller than it's siblings, and a couple that look like they will turn out very pretty.

I've had a lot of fish, ( mostly tetras,) but my favorite is Tad, my golden angelfish. He's actually a freshwater angelfish, which is the only reason i could get him. ;)
I've had him for a couple years now, and he's still healthy.
Right now, i also have a pleco, a black skirt tetra, and a red-eyed tetra.
