Music from different cultures + languages

Does anyone like listening to music from different cultures and sometimes in different languages? Even if you have absolutely no idea what it's saying, and you just think it sounds good. Or if you like listening to instrumental music? Discuss!

As for foreign language I really love Rammstein even though I have zero idea what they're saying (I did look up translations but wish I hadn't )
Industrial I like Apocolyptica. They do have some guest singers on some of their songs but most of them are purely instrumental.

It kind of bothers me when i cant figure out what theyre talking about. For example, my aunt does business, so she travels a lot and knows a lot of languages. Once she let me listen to her ipod, and all her songs were in all these different languages. At first i was awed and thought it was cool, but that wore off after a few minutes

As for instrumental, i love that from all cultures, it just sounds really cool with the different instruments and that kind of thing

I was told that I wouldn't like the translations so that's why i haven't looked them up - I like the music too much & don't want to be turned off them!

I do like some music from other cultures, I've heard some Indian music that I loved and even some Native American music too that I enjoyed

I love the Numa Numa song, by O-zone (ok, fine, I don't know the actual name of the song...) and I recently downloaded some songs from the movie "Everything is Illuminated," which are mostly in Russian/Ukrainian. My ex-Spanish teacher also introduced me to some fun music by Manu Chao, which is mostly in Spanish and French, so I can sort of understand it. Oh, and Gogol Bordello, which is like gypsy-punk and I think in Russian/Ukrainian as well.
Other than that, I listen to music from either the U.S. or U.K.

See I understand what they sing and hence don't like them. :p

But I like German music in general not much.

Spanish (although I understand nothing) I like best.
Japanese is also good, for example AKFG (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=M2DzR6ES3vo).

I love the Numa Numa song, by O-zone (ok, fine, I don't know the actual name of the song...)
Dragostea din tei :)

I liked O-Zone, but actually I found "Despre Tine (http://ca.youtube.com/watch?v=_wNZUU_Z5gE)" better.
All in all do I like Romanian music.

I have a lot of music in French from various people. I can understand a bit of it but not really well. I usually look up the lyrics to songs I have in other languages just so I can remember the basic idea of what's being sung when I listen.

I have a couple of songs in Spanish, German, Latin, and a few in random African languages, but not too much. Most of the foreign language stuff I have is choral music actually (thus the Latin), though some of my French stuff is pop-ish. There's just a lot more good choral music in Latin and French.

Lots of music lyrics are stupid anyway, so I think not understanding the words wound improve some songs  They say that everything too stupid to be said is sung. Not always of course, especially in some genres, but anyway--yes I like a lot music in other languages.

My favourite foreign language artist (and I don't include Enlish in this) is Johnny Clegg from South Africa. His most successful song must have been "Scatterlings of Africa" from the Rain Man soundtrack. His songs are awesome, they have the right mix of rock/pop/ethnic. He sings in English, Swaheli (sp?), sometimes even French and Africaans. I already turned several people on with his music because it is so powerful and beautiful.

ILoveHARRY_, can you recommend any Vietnamese music (preferably some that can be purchased on iTunes)? I've been to Vietnam last year, and I really loved it, I would love to have some good music to remind me of my trip there.
I love listening to Irish Pub music, makes me want to sing and drink beer. My brother says it wants him to go hang at the Prancing Pony .

I don't care what language a song is in, if I like the way it sounds I'll listen to it. I seem to prefer music from Europe and Asia since I have more music in non-English languages and most English music I do have is from Europe.

The downside is it's harder to buy the music, usually I can't find what I like in CD stores.

I love music in other languages besides English! I think I have more of this music on my Napster than I do English.

I'm really into German music, (although as Tenshi mentioned, I understand Rammstein as well, and dont really appreciate their music too much) Spnaish music (from both Spain and Latin America), and Thai music. I can understand all the German and most Spanish, but I know almost no Thai, so I dont understand the songs, but they still have a good sound and beat. Some Chinese and Japanese are really good as well.

Some of my favorite artists include Loona, Seeed, Lafee, DJ Oetzi, Marquess, Silly Fools, Zeal, Loso, Los Rieleros, Juanes, David Bisbal Die Aerzte, and actually many more.

Ahaha, same here. I actually can't listen to some of them anymore because of that. Mein Herz Brennt hasn't been ruined for me though, I still love it.

I love a lot of artists from different countries/languages. One of my top favourite bands is called Kent, who sing in both English and Swedish (and in one song, they have a part in french, from which I got the lyrics in my sig).

I also love listening to French bands, like Air and Les Cowboys Fringant and Phoenix (even though Phoenix sings in English, haha).

I also adore Sigur Ros, who are Icelandic. My Icelandic friend translated some of the lyrics for me and they're really beautiful (Hoppipolla makes me smile).

Another great band I love is DeVotchka, and although they're from the US, their music has a very Romani, slavic feel to it. Really beautiful stuff.

I really love Yiruma, and Freshlyground. Yiruma is a South Korean man who plays the most beautiful piano music in the world (well, in my opinion...), and Freshlyground are an African band that just show so much potential and promise. Europe is great for all kinds of music wether it is in a different language or not. For Alternative Rock, Belgium is hot for all kinds of bands.

Belgian Bands, English lyrics: Millionaire, Soulwax, Evil Superstars, 2 Many DJs, dEUS, Ghinzu, Praga Khan, Admiral Freebee, Zornik
Belgian Bands, Dutch lyrics: Noordkaap, De Mens,
Belgian Band, French Lyrics: Vive La Fete

Others..

French Band, French lyrics: Indochine (A French version of Placebo mixed with The Cure, very good highly recommended)

German Bands, German lyrics: Wir Sind Helden, Virginia Jetzt!, Kettcar, Melotron, Wolfsheim, OOMPH! (a more subtle Rammstein)
German Bands, English lyrics: Donots, Beatsteaks,
Austrian Band, German lyrics: L'Ame Immortelle

I could name more German bands but I might scare you, a lot of them fall into the EBM/Industrial/Gothic scene as its big over there

Swedish band, Swedish lyrics: Kent

Finnish bands, Finnish lyrics: Sydan Sydan, PMMP,

Norweigen bands, English lyrics: Apoptygma Berzerk, Zeromancer

Danish bands, English lyrics: Efterklang, Mew

I've been watching a lot of animes recently, and sometimes when I'm bored I kind of surf youtube for amvs of my favorite animes (yes, I know I've got better things to do with my time, don't remind me!) and as a result I've been listening to more Jpop and I've been really liking it.
I've always been a fan of the songs in my video games (most of which end up being in Japanese) so I suppose it isn't too big of a leap for me.

At the moment, I'm obsessed with the song "Beautiful World" by Utada Hikaru.

 I've become a bit of an Orange Range fan (Japanese rock- it's brilliant), and Mika Nakashima's voice has fascinated me ever since the first Nana movie. Anna Tsuchiya is also really good, her music has less of a 'pop' feel to it than most Japanese music I've heard.
I've always adored Edith Piaf and Serge Gainsbourg, but among contemporary French singers, I think Yelle is great to dance to- though her lyrics, if you can understand them (I mostly can't) are absolutely filthy. And I love, love, love Air, even though their music is more instrumental than anything else so maybe it's not strictly 'French'. 'Alone in Kyoto' is possibly my favourite instrumental piece of all time, it's been five years since I first heard it and it STILL gives me goosebumps.

And oh yes, Sigur Ros are wonderful. I'd count Bjork in, too, if she didn't sing in English.

I lived in Poland for 4 years in the mid-90s and I still listen to a lot of Polish music. And I've loved the Icelandic artist Bubbi ever since I spent a summer in Reykjavik in the late 80s.

One of the good things I've found about listening to music from a culture that's not yours is that you often don't know what's "supposed" to be cool and what's "supposed" to be cheesy, so you respond to the music, not to the image, to an extent that's just not possible in your own culture. Most Polish people are aghast when they hear what Polish artists I like, as most of them are considered very middle-aged and unfashionable - it's a bit like if I went round saying I liked Daniel O'Donnell, Perry Como and Val Doonican in England!

Amongst more internationally known artists, I also like Trio Bulgarka (I always think they manage to upstage even Kate Bush on the albums they appear on!) and I'm very fond of Natacha Atlas/Transglobal Underground.

When I don't understand the lyrics in foreign music, I still love the sound, and when I do understand the lyrics, they're often coming from an interesting different angle to English lyrics. I also feel embarrassed about the fact that we British on the whole impose our language and culture on the rest of the world but are often reluctant to engage with anyone else's.

And I'm a Eurovision junkie.

My ex boyfriend is crazy about Polish jazz. We saw the Tomasz Stanko Quartet live last year in Sofia, it was fantastic. I think he's mainly into Skalpel and Pink Freud. Btw I'm going to Poland in December, off topic, but I'm too excited not to mention it

My favourite non-English act are Wolfsheim  Their albums are among the very few I can listen to on repeat, again and again, and enjoy them every time. My favourite are Kein Zurueck, Touch, Closer Still, Find You're Gone, and Care For You. I also love the soundtracks to all Wong Kar-Wai films  Recently I've been listening to some Finnish tango (Olavi Virta) - through a film director again (Aki Kaurismaki), and a Norwegian band called Surferosa, who are extremely uplifting and cute (again, found them through cinema, a Norwegian film the name of which I completely forgot).

Do you like them, too? Fantastic! I was worried it was going to be another one of those situations where real Bulgarians think the Bulgarian artists I like are unspeakably naff. I love the haunting, slightly atonal harmonies in a lot of Balkan folk music, actually, but Yanka just absolutely rocks. Are there any other Bulgarian artists you'd recommend?

Brilliant! Which part of Poland?

I'm not at all up on current Polish music, actually, and only really heard stuff that was on the radio a lot or that friends recommended/gave me when I was there, so I'm no expert. I love sung poetry artists like Grzegorz Turnau, Soyka and Antonina Krzystom (any Poles reading this will be curling their toes with embarassment at the cheesy middle-aged nature of my taste), find a guilty pleasure in wannabe American-style rock band Wilki, and (although I'm not wild about their records) communist-era rock band Maanam (another uncool, easy-listening for the over-50s band) are one of the most incredible bands I've ever seen live - their singer Kora has an awesome voice and could pass for a woman half her age.

No, genuine folklore (which is what Trio Bulgarka do predominantly) is deeply revered in Bulgaria. I'm no patriot (not by any stretch of the definition), but I am awed by certain singing techniques and songs.

When I was in the USA the summer of 2003, most people would ask me whether it was very bad in Bulgaria and even if we had trains, but there was one man who, when he heard where I was from, immediately thought of Trio Bulgarka (and their recording The Mystery Of Bulgarian Voices). I was very pleased to hear such a nice association of my country for a change

Unfortunately I can't recommend anything specific, I know no names of singers, just songs... But а folk song from the Rhodope region sung by Valya Balkanska (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Valya_Balkanska) is a part of the Voyager Golden Record selection of music included in the two Voyager spacecraft launched in 1977. So it's travelling in space now :D

I love listening to foreign languages as well...A lot of my friends don't understand why I like it, but you don't have to understand the lyrics to enjoy the music.

I'd have say that French is my favorite, but I also love German, Japanese and Italian. I've lost track of how many I've heard though :)

There's just something incredibly beautiful about relying more on the actual music and the way that the words are said instead of their meaning. It's more...personal in a way.

I love listening to metal/dark electro/similar genres in German. It just sounds that much better IMO, the language lends itself to that kind of music.

I absolutely LOVE korean music. For me it is the best kind out there, and I highly recommend it. These are just a few of my favorite songs by Shinee, BEAST, and GD & TOP

Everything I listen to is foreign!
I listen to mostly K-Pop and a bit of J-Pop and some C-Pop and T-Pop.
I love JQT, SNSD, BigBang, Dal Shabet, Lee Jung Hyun, Capsule, Perfume (my absolute favourite!), Ayumi Hamasaki, Rurutia, Jolin Tsai, Wanda, Vivi Jiang, Neko Jump, Waii and Kiss Me Five :)
That's only a few xD

I'm a real fangirl of Perfume! Only problem is buying & shipping CDs (especially Japanese ones) is expensive V,V

I know what you mean about importing Japanese CDs, I've thrown hundreds into it. I see a lot of the 3+ versions of one thing going on there now too which really urks me.

I used to be really into Jpop and Kpop and I still have some songs but it's not to the extreme it was. With Kpop it's a huge hit or miss with me, I'll maybe have 2 songs from G-Dragon, 2NE1, DBSK, etc. I do have Lee Jung Hyun's older stuff. Also, remixes, I probably have more remixes of Kpop then the actual Kpop songs because I like me some electronic music.

Right now I like:
abingdon boys school
T.M.Revolution
Milan Stanković
Dino Merlin
Davor Badrov
Mylène Farmer
Dima Bilan
Max Barskih
Sogdiana
Vintage
... and a bunch of others.

I really enjoy the Putumayo world music collections. A lot of African stuff etc. One of my favorites is the "Gypsy Groove" cd. So much fun :D And it's really fun to listen to the singing in other languages.

I'm really in love with J-pop and K-pop as well. I don't understand Korean at all (and I'm just on Beginner level in Japanese), but it doesn't stop me. My favorite groups and artists are Morning Musume., Berryz Koubou, S/mileage, AKB48, C-ute, Mano Erina, Utada Hikaru, Matsuura Aya, Girls' Generation, f(x), Super Junior and BoA.

I hate Korean and Japanese music, it annoys me extremely, especially when tons of asian people who don't understand the music listen to it...at that point it's just weird.

I love Hindi music...a lot. :) Most of the music comes from the movies.
I also love J-Pop/Rock and K-Pop.
European music is attractive, too.
I don't think you have to understand it to like it a lot. I like the voices, they way they sing it, the melody, etc. I doubt that if you listen to different languages that you don't know, you'd be listening to it because you understand it.

Hmm...I don't like any modern American bands/singers. I love the ones over in Britain though. I've always loved British bands.

I love Japanese music, particularly Dir en grey. There's also X Japan, the GazettE, and alice nine, but Dir en grey has been my favorite band for years.

I've heard a little bit of Tiktak too. They're an all-girl Finnish rock band and they're pretty good as well.

I saw/heard them for the first time at their concert in Utrecht last week. I went to keep a friend company, but it wasn't too bad... I was happy brought earplugs though...man those guys are tiny but loud!

I too enjoy a lot of different languages in my music, but I kind of have a knack for languages so I mostly listen to songs in the languages that I know. It's good practise, especially when you don't get to practise a particular language that you happen to know/worked hard to learn.

I love Irish music the best. Although some of the artists I like sing in English, some of them sing in Irish or even do instrumentals that are cool. The Corrs are an example of one who does instrumentals. They have some great ones. I also like Leahy and Enya as well as Celtic Woman. The very first instrumental I heard from The Corrs was "Rebel Heart" and I instantly fell in love with it. It was just so beautiful. I also like "Toss the Feathers" and a few others I can't remember right now.

Music is such a universal thing that you don't have to 'understand' the song to 'get' the song.

I listen to music in different languages all the time and these songs would definitely lose the charm and the feeling if they were performed in English.
