Definitely Metallica and a lot of the earlier U2 stuff are amazing. if you can speak German (or just don't mind not being able to understand it - probably better off) Rammstein are pretty good. Apocalyptica are really good - if you like instrumental rock.

Audioslave; Avenged Sevenfold (I really don't like them that much but my boyfriend loves them); Bullet For My Valentine - they can be a bit screamy, but they're excellent; Disturbed; Pantera - such a good band!!; Rage Against the Machine - one of my favourite bands :)

I dont understand Rammstein but I still love them. Apocalypitca are really good. Some of their songs have guest vocals like Corey Taylor from Slipknot.

gosh there are loads of bands  i myself have just gotten into four new bands that i love!!! Coheed and cambria have a unique sound, their album: No world for tomorrow is brilliant. also i a few months ago got 30 seconds to mars's new album: a beautiful lie once again this is very good. Another two: Soasin-soasin..a very good albuma nd Bullet for my Valentine. as Loonymagic said they can be a bit extremem at times witht he screaming but i thinkl they are good. It depends how rock you want to go i think, there are loads fo bands like green day, muse, Panic! At the disco, Fall Out Boy, My Chemical Romance, etc that are brill bands, each have a different sound...

U2 is a fantastic band! I'm going to list some stuff that is a bit different than the 'classic' rock type stuff. At the moment I'm listening to:
The Chalets
Republic of Loose <--they've got an awesome funk influence to them.
Modest Mouse
Death from Above 1979
Wolf Parade
The Shins
The Editors

Look through some of the other threads in this forum as I think there have been some excellent bands discussed.

Stay away from:

What kind of rock music do you prefer? :)
Is it classic rock? Post-rock? Alternative-rock? Shoegaze-rock? Hard-rock?
I'd highly recommend the Aussie band named The Vines. They're something like a crossover between Nirvana and The Beatles. But, they're actually so much more than that. ^_^
I'd also recommend Radiohead, Interpol, Nine Black Alps, Mew, The Strokes, Kings of Leon, The Subways, Kasabian and great, and very underestimated Aussie band called The Silents. :)

Led Zep, Pink Floyd, AC/DC, Hendrix if you like psychedelic rock, basically, the classics.

I'm also currently hooked onto a lot of Indian rock bands, like Avial.

I'd recommend TOOL. Start with the album Ænima first, then move on to Lateralus and 10,000 Days. Then move on to their first studio album, Undertow. It's a lot different from the first three albums I listed here. Here's (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tja6_h4lT6A) a sample from Ænima, from Lateralus (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fxiFoYMsIJw), and from 10,000 Days (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2F_hGwD26g).
