I know they are an american type of exam but we dont have them in Oz. I thought originally that they were something you took to get into college but then I saw that fourteen-fifteen year old people were taking them so unless you start college REALLY early in the states... Im confused

Basically what we do here in oz is reception: at the age of five you start school and do reception for a year, basically teachers make sure you recognise letters and the alphabet... Except that they dont actually do it in all the states, just south australia, victoria and new south whales i think. Then you go onto jr primary: years one - three. Then its primary school: years four - seven. Then you hit high school: years 8 - 12. At the end of year twelve you graduate (obviously) but you also take your year twelve exams. In my day (some five-six years ago) they were known as your TER (or tertiary education results). From these results (if you wanted) you could apply to universities (yeah we have uni's instead of colleges, it's a thing) or TAFE. TAFE is... I dont know what it actually stand for but its like the un-uni. the place you can go to learn more conventional things like carpentry and being a chef, those kinds of things, as well as computers and electronics. It's just another way to study things that cant be studied at uni. At the end of a TAFE course you are given a certificate and i think there may be different certificate levels. During uni you have bachelor degrees. If you pass you can do honors, and if you pass that you can do phd (and become a Dr in your field).

So what are SATs? we dont have to do exams at the end of each year in high school (that i can remember). we are judged (except for yr 12... and possibly yr 11) on our results during the year, for both tests and written assignments.

We don't take SAT's and PSAT's either.. We just get our diplomas in grade 12
