Its pretty awesome written out. My friend writes and speaks it. Its pretty cool when you have her write something for you.

I tried to learn a bit of Arabic before I went to Egypt last year but I didn't get very far. I'd love to learn it though, mainly because I want to travel a lot and also because Arabic lettering looks really cool:D

I know how to read and write it but I can't speak it. :lol:
I also don't understand most of it but I can transalate a few words.

I learnt a few arabic words with my husband who comes from Tunisia and speaks Arabic, French and English fluently, but it's not enough to hold a conversation. I can only understand the talking point when I catch a word that I understand. I can't write or read it, but fortunatly for me French is spoken and understood quite well in North Africa.
Hopefully my kids will be better than me, my elder son can already speak a little arabic, but still prefers French.

well as my parrents come from morocco I can understand arabic and read it a bit...but i cannot speak or write arabic.......i only can speak Moroccan arabic :)...i still have some time to learn it

I speak MSA. I doubt I'd understand a few of you if we had a conversation. Arabic, even after a couple years of study, still gives me trouble when I get into different dialects.

It just takes practice. You'd be amazed at how well you can speak in less than a year if you keep at. Try reading BBC Arabic and listening to Al Arabia or Al Jazeera to improve your language.

I'm trying. I actually have been listening to the BBC Arabic podcast and Al Jazeera every so often. I hadn't heard of Al Arabia. I can't understand anything they say, but I know I just need to hear the language as much as possible. Since there aren't many Arabic speakers where I live, I have to do the best I can. :)

You've got the right idea. Al Arabia is another Arabic news outlet. If Al Jazeera is CNN, Al Arabia would be MSNBC. Keep at it. You'll get it.

I have studied Classical Arabic on and off for a few years. It was the most intense and challenging, yet most amazingly deep thing I have ever studied. I hope to take it up again. Masters of Classical Arabic, are truly amazing, it is such a deep and complex language, I was awed almost every class.

If you like Arabic Calligraphy you should look up this Chinese Calligrapher named Haji Noor Deen. His work is truly inspiring, his Arabic Calligraphy is really cool, and he has developed his own unique style that incorporates Chinese styles also. I love it, a meld of two of the most beautiful languages in my opinion.

I've been thinking similarly about it. I decided to investigate how I might learn some Arabic, but it quickly became apparent that I don't have the time to do it on my own. The grammar is complex but not draconian, and it's apparently regular enough--after all people do learn to speak Arabic as a second language. What really fascinates me about Semitic languages is how the consonantal root/core pairings work systematically. Anyway, this is all on the back burner until I'm satisfied that I speak English. :lol:

It's really interesting and hard language......It's my first language and I really like it...

You're right, :D. After all, one of my best friends is austrian and she speaks and writes arabic very well now. :agree:

I think the best way to improve your learning is by direct conversation with good Arabic speakers, so you can find its sound familiar as possible, beacause as you said reading isn't a big deal but understanding is harder ...

I've always thought the caligraphy for the Arabic language is so beautiful and kind of mysterious looking. Growing up, reading "101 Arabian Nights," was about as close as I got to anything Arabic. But, those stories were so amazing and have always stuck with me.

I'm really glad that I don't have to learn English as a second language, as I hear it is really difficult to learn. Goodness knows there are people I hear all the time whose first language is English, and they murder it so badly I just cringe when I hear it.

I've always been facintated with the Arabic and Moorish architecture and art. I love the ornate shapes and decorations, and the colors are so vibrant and beautiful.

Since I was a child, I've had a facination with ancient Egypt. I would love to learn to read hieroglyphic and be able to translate them to English. (Wonder if that "Rosetta Stone" language program has any tutorials on hieroglyphs?)

Looking at the messages you all have been sending each other, the Arabic writing is so pretty and artistic. It's really beautiful.

They certainly do! If you could write anything in Arabic, I could tell you if you have it or not. Jordanian accent isn't much different from syrian accent, (what N Mado wrote).

I was always a fan of the movies, but I didn't really start reading anything until 2008, and when I did start reading, I had so much on my reading list that I never really thought about Harry (foolish of me).. And i was embarrassed, because I was so late, like Dh was released 2007.. But this summer, I said to hell with it, and read them all, it was such a liberating experience, I fell in love with all of them, and wondered why I didn't get my owl yet :rotfl:

diffrent arab countries have diffrent accents, Jordan has a diffrent accent depending if you are from the city or from the beduins, same with Saudi arabia they have a diffrent accent UAE, Bahrain, Kwuait are almost the same. Oman is almost like Saudi Arabia, and Yemen has the most diffrent in the Gulf. Arab countries like Lybia, Algeria, Tunisia, Moritania, Morrocco have the heaviest accent. Egypt, Lebenon, Syria are almost the same. Palestine alone has diffrent accents depending on where you are, khaleel has a diffrent accent from Gaza and Jerusalem has a diffrent accent and so on. Iraq and Kwuait has an accent like Original arabic the pronounce all letters like they are supoosed to unlike all arabs.

Are you Kuwaiti, or Iraqi? Because I've met a lot of people from both countries and they speak nothing like Original arabic. For instance they pronounce 'K' as 'Ch' (so Chalb [dog] instead of Kalb), they pronounce 'G, J' as 'Y' (Yom'a [Friday] instead of Gom'a). :shrug:. Not to mention that countless words are derived from English words (Sakkar comes from secure, lait from light, waid from wide, etc).

The guy I am seeing is from Iraq and I absolutely love when I hear him speak Arabic. He gets really embarrassed to speak it in front of me randomly so I love to catch him when he is talking to his family :p It is such a gorgeous language, it just flows so beautifully.

Don't know yet, really. 17th is the third day of the Eid. I don't know if we have plans for the day. If not, I'll probably go. But I still haven't reserved a ticket, :shrug:
