Questions on the Third Task

If you have any questions on the Third Task ask them here. We will take any time lost to asking questions into account on your 20 minutes. Some tips. 1. Make sure you finish. Even if you go over on time it is very important that you finish the task. 2. Guessing is fine. We will not be taking points off for wrong answers. 3. Honor code. We're trusting you not to cheat and not to help others cheat. Please do not tell other members or other champions what is in the Maze until April 22nd when it will be open to everyone.

I have a question about the essay, is there a requirement to how long it has to be?

Fawkesfan1
April 15th, 2008, 1:43 am
Is there any length to how long the last part of the Third Task has to be (the written portion)?

Jessica
April 15th, 2008, 1:54 am
Nope no requirement FF1

The last thread is here (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=115882) for reference.

I have another question, can the essay be written in story form?

So we post our answers in the thread...? But then why can I not see other people's answers? :hmm: *confused*

All posts are moderated. Staff can see them but Champions can not.

I kind of didn't realize we had to click on the cup, but I think I'll finish, but do we have to do an essay? or can we write some fanfiction too? or fanfictionish essay?

Jessica
April 15th, 2008, 9:53 pm
It needs to be an essay.

I just finished it, but for mine, I kind of have a shortish fanfiction blurb about snape in the very beginning, and the rest is essay. I think it's complementary, but since you said it has to be an essay, I'm not sure if I should post it or not. if I did, would it just not count toward my score for the essay?

How long foes the essay have to be? Is there a required length?

That should be fine. :)

Nope. No minimum or maximum.

Will we be allowed to read everyone's essays after the 22nd? :D

Does everything in the essay have to be strictely canon based, or could we have a small license or some assumptions about the characters, of the type "Voldemort is a Paris Hilton fan"?

I posted at the end, but I didn't realize until I went back to close the windows that I got an error message saying I had to wait 8 seconds and try again. I posted my (I think) finish time (and beginning time for reference). I wasn't sure what else to do. Since everyone was talking about going over (although not as much as I seem to have done), I wasn't sure how much of a factor time would be. Anyway, I wrote and posted my essay before I officially finished the maze, so that should be interesting to score. :)

We can't use outside reference for the essays, right? Just making sure. :D

I'm writing it right now, but since I saw the final duel page around 10:20 last night, do I have to turn it in by then? Or by the time I entered the maze?

Sorry about all the questions.

Oh the crazier the better. Just find something that you can cite as "evidence".

We'll give you some leeway but you can't have a week. The idea is for everyone to have basically the same amount of time to think about it.

You can use anything you'd like.

I'm just curious, but why is it that lots of people didn't realize there was an essay? (you have to click on the triwizard cup at the end by the way Mad_Druid) I just forgot, but I wouldn't have thought so many others did too

The problem will be fixed shortly.

I have a question about one of the essay questions:

5. Who would win in a straight fight, Harry Potter or Harry Dresden?
What does "straight fight" mean? A duel of powers, wits, strength...?

I'm totally confused - What's the difference between an "essay" and a "story"? In the second task, we wrote an "essay" too, and it was a story or a poem. So what's the difference here? :hmm:

Will the quizzes be the same for the non-Champion contestants who will enter on the 22nd? Just curious.

I was just thinking, some of the newbies who want to enter won't know much about the staff members (I mean, I've been a member over a year and I still don't know all the Admins) - though they should know about the rules. ;)

Is there a word count for the essays?

EDIT:
Nevermind, I just found Jessica's answer on page one:
Nope. No minimum or maximum.

Maybe it would help if I read the questions already asked

I got curious about the threads below the stickies and started the maze part way through, without signing in to the first thread  I got carried away with the questions and reached the end, probably without doing the whole maze.

Should I start again from the beginning?

sho there's a list of questions here (http://www.cosforums.com/showpost.php?p=4993235&postcount=26). Owl me which ones you still need to do.

Ok, I have a slight problemo...
I finished the questions part a few hours ago, and then I had to leave for a Dr.'s appointment. I don't have time to write an essay tonight because I have school and I have to go to bed in like two hours...I need to shower and look over my stuff for a precalc quiz tomorrow. Tomorrow after school, I have like...four chemistry assignments that are due Friday. I should be able to get something in tomorrow, but what would happen if I got bombarded with homework and flat-out didn't have time? I don't want to have an unfair advantage over anybody...I probably should have waited until the weekend to do this.

The challenges were really fun by the way! :)

Are the essays going to be made viewable to others? It sounds totally stupid, but I really like what I wrote, and I would love to share it at some point.

Go with the honor system. Just do it as soon as you reasonably can. The last bit was a surprise so we can't hold it against you if you need a slight extension.

Unless people feel strongly against it we'll probably make at least the essays viewable. There's a poll up so go vote!

Me too, I like what I wrote and would like to share it. Unfortunately I voted in the poll before I wrote the essay, so I didn't vote for showing it. I'm putting it on record now, I'd like the essays to be posted publicly. :)

Another question: How much does the essay count for? There were 15 sets of questions, right? And Jessica said earlier that there were 40 points for grabs. Does that mean the sets count for 2 points each = 30 points and the essay for 10? Or is it once again one of those complicated pro-rated rating systems that it takes a calculator to figure out? :hmm:

I took the maze on Monday night, but would it be all right if I submitted the essay tomorrow? I was planning on submitting it today, but I just finished a five page homework assignment right now. :grumble: And I have more left, too.

Yep, OK. Go with the honor system. Do it as soon as possible to stay fair for the ones who had to think of some text too so fast, but RealLife goes first. :)

I was one of the first ones to do the task, but when it was over an hour and I couldn't stay online any longer, I stopped before getting to the last 3 sets of questions, and I never even saw an essay part. I noticed last night that you were allowing some people to finish, but I was on my way to work, but I'm home now and have the time to spend if you allow me to continue.

Wow, I just finished.

I would be right in saying that the essay needn't be exactly 24 hours later, right? Cause with my schedule that would be next to impossible.

And every time I hit a dead end in the maze, I reposted my answer because I wasn't sure if I should or not. Don't take off any of my time, because I just copied and pasted so it didn't take long, but I wanted to apologize if half my answers show up twice.

and WOW!!!!! to all the mods. That was great!

24 hours more or less is fine. We're not that heartless. The maze will open in the meantime but that won't affect you or your score :)
