KeeperOfAranja May 27th, 2008, 2:26 am Just a few quick questions. Does anyone else live with more pets than is really necessary and loves it? Have you ever had problems with owning certain pets, or vast numbers of animals, or breaking the rules with your animals? Does anyone have any strange pets?
I live in a house full of animals. I think the last time we counted, we were bordering sixty, not all in the same building, of course. In the community we live at, you're only supposed to have four or five pets...but we reserve the right to as many furry and feathered friends as we want because all our neighbors lets their dogs run loose and chase cars and eat our rabbits. :(
Emma May 27th, 2008, 3:19 pm I live with 4 cats and one dog... the cats are urinating everywhere...I know that it is the time of year ....the dog is on a diet.... so she is is drinking more than she usually does. So I have pee everywhere.
anyone know the solution?
Colonel_Fubster May 28th, 2008, 5:53 am Emma, you can get spot cleaners that break down the urine smell, which also helps to stop the animals from going in the same place again. You can usually find them in pet supply stores.
We have three dogs right now, we had four at one time, and have had guest-dogs from time to time. City bylaws say we are only allowed two, unless we pay lots of money for a "breeder" license, even though all the dogs are fixed. I know it's there to stop puppy mills and hoarders, but I think 2 dogs per household is too strict a limit.
We can't have other pets, partly because the dogs would go nuts, and partly because of allergies.
If we win the lottery we're going to get an acerage and have lots of dogs. :)
KeeperOfAranja June 4th, 2008, 1:58 am Acreage and lots of dogs...sounds nice.
we've got five cats and three dogs and my brother's dog is always peeing in my room. My cat does too, when she gets mad. I use a cheap pet stain spray and usually some perfume to get rid of the smell. Then I spray the creature in particular with a little of the perfume. They hate it and avoid my carpet for days.
My biggest problem with my animals is that two of my cats shed all year long. My cat has white hair and when you pet her, it snows. It's terrible. Any suggestions on how I can control that?
Colonel_Fubster June 5th, 2008, 5:38 am There's no way I know of to stop shedding, the only thing to do is to brush/comb the cat or dog every day, so that most of the shed hair goes into the brush. Some cats and dogs enjoy being vacuumed, but others find it scary. If your cat isn't scared of the vacuum, you could give that a try. :)
KeeperOfAranja June 5th, 2008, 5:55 pm She's definitely afraid of the vacuum. Thanks for the advice. Now all I have to do is dig out that old pet brush...
Kitunen June 8th, 2008, 3:44 pm At one point, I had fourteen guinea pigs if I remember correctly. :wow:
I was young when we had that many, so I don't remember exactly how that happened...but I think that the two we originally bought from the pet store were both pregnant when we bought them or something...we kept quite a few of the baby guinea pigs, but we had to adopt some of them out...it was impractical to keep them all.
That seems to happen a lot, though...four or five years ago, we got two gerbils and a hamster...ALL THREE of them had babies a few weeks after we brought them home.
Right now we have a rabbit, two guinea pigs, and two hamsters...it's kind of a lot, but I wouldn't call it an "overload".
KeeperOfAranja June 8th, 2008, 6:56 pm Gerbils are awesome. I've got two.
have you had any problems with your hamsters? My sister had two dwarf hamsters and one of them killed the other one. She was really upset. Hamsters are probably different, but I thought I'd ask anyway.

If your brother's dog is a male, you can also try a belly band. It's similar to a belt, goes over the genitals, and if the dog tries to pee in the house he just ends up peeing on himself. Pretty effective deterrent. :eyebrows:

I think I've actually heard something like that about dwarf hamsters before, that they can sometimes randomly start fighting with eachother even if they'd been living together peacefully...or if they weren't raised together they might fight as well. I've never had dwarf hamsters, but I've had two pairs of hamsters that were raised together but we eventually had to separate them because they started fighting...on the other hand, we've had other pairs that seemed to like eachother.
Pigwijon September 10th, 2008, 9:52 pm You could get one of those special brushes that brush the undercoat as well :)
gipro2003 September 11th, 2008, 3:23 am My family has always had tons of animals. Right now we have 5 horses, a pig, 2 goats, several chickens, 5 or 6 cats, 30+ fish, and 5 dogs, one of which is pregnant. Luckily, we live on 6 acres, so we have ample room for all these animals..

Wow! That is so cool! I wish I had the land to have all the animals I wanted. As it is, my house and yard are almost too tiny for my two dogs. Definitely can't get a third. :(
Harry852 October 9th, 2008, 4:17 am I only have one Puppy. But my friend Kaley, has 6 dogs, 10 cats, 3 rats, 4 birds, 2 rabbits, a Tranchala, and 2 snakes!!!!!!
KeeperOfAranja October 30th, 2008, 7:07 pm Wow...that's a lot of pets...
My cat ran away, but I got a new dog!
xhanax315 November 9th, 2008, 11:54 pm I used to have twenty cats. Quite honestly, twenty. They were all outside cats of course, except a small number. Well all of a sudden the numbers started declining and I'm not sure what had happened to them. Not all of them got hit by cars because there wasn't any bodies. Now I only have four, one went missing a few days ago. I keep asking my mother if we can aquire a female so we can build up the population again, but she won't give in. I miss my cats a lot. :upset: Oh and we have two dogs and two turtles. I want a guinea pig too, but no. :sigh:
gipro2003 November 10th, 2008, 12:06 am We are adding 2 Great Pyrenese puppies to our already large crowd of pets!!
Harry852 December 5th, 2008, 5:58 am Having lots of pets is alright, but if you have to much you can't talk care of them all. There's nothing wrong with liking animals and getting allot! It's just that it would be a hand full and you never would know if you've fed all of them.
Like if the bird don't eat all of it's food in the morning and you feed your other birds and you have so much you need to re-check and it still has it's food and it still has some. So it eats it and dosn't have lunch.
Or if you have fifteen cows and your putting them away and you swear you've put them all away! But you missed the one that looks so much like the two you know you put away! It turns out you put away all but one and it runs away? Thats way you should stick with a few!
Labrynth January 9th, 2009, 2:48 am LOL I have 6 dogs at my house. Thankfully 2 of which are looking for homes (And will hopefully get them soon!). I even own an ever dreaded Pit Bull. Her name is Buttercup.
fuzzyfeet123 June 25th, 2009, 5:22 pm I have about 30 guppies, they keep having babies, a rabbit, Mr. Magoo, a pony, Wally, and a dog, Edgar.
Demonikka November 3rd, 2009, 8:11 am This past summer, we were housing and taking care of our neighbor's animals. Out of the goats, I had two and my uncle had claim to one chicken. When we peaked this summer there were 2 cats, 2 dogs, 3 dozen chickens (only 6 were roosters), and 16 goats. I was there for the births of 4 kids, the death of 2 of those kids, and the deaths of 2 other goats. One of which happened to be mine. All within 9 days of the twin pygmys being born. All the goats were taken to auction (except my one), and slowly the chickens were sold off.
Now we're down to 3 cats, 3 dogs, 1 chicken, and 2 goats. I'm quite surprised the chicken has lasted this long without a buddy. I broke down two months ago and bought another goat so Caramell wouldn't be so lonely, and a couple of days after that I brought home a new kitten. It just so happens that Lenny (the 4 month old goat) is only 10 days younger than my kitten, Soot.
Bonta Kun November 19th, 2009, 9:25 pm I love having lots of animals around- at the moment we have 9 cats, 3 dogs, 3 1/2 horses (one is pregnant) and a flock of chickens and ducks- not sure how many off hand. Oh, and 4 ferrets. My sister used to breed gerbils so we used to have a whole room just full of gerbils and a few other assorted small critters (in various tanks and cages of course) and that was a crazy time :D
I have always wanted to have pigs, goats and turkeys- maybe one day! :)
mexicant November 20th, 2009, 1:48 am Is your ferret amazing and bouncing?
...sorry, couldn't resist.
That sounds like a lot of animals! I take it you must live in an area with a lot of space?
Bonta Kun December 1st, 2009, 7:11 pm Yep we live in an old farmhouse with land around it, and we rent a neighbour's field for the horses.
The ferrets are very bouncy :D One of them went bald though, apparantly this is common with ferrets. It has started to grow back now though, thankfully. I wish I had taken a photo when he was fully bald.
Demonikka December 16th, 2009, 10:27 pm Guess I should kinda update. We've gotten rid of the chicken and we had to put my mom's dog down because there was a fight and she was injured...long story, and I'm still hurting a little bit about it.
Bonta Kun - Goats are the sweetest animals you could ever get. They really don't get sick, and if they do they're really cheap to medicate (that's at my vet, at least). They don't really need to be tied up, because they'll follow you and hop around. Or maybe that's just my Caramell. Since I'm not a conventional owner, I don't own a goat trailer. So when going to the vet, Lenny gets to ride in the front seat of the minivan, and Caramell rides in the backseat. I've gotten more than one odd look from people when I've stopped for gas on my way home from the vet.
