PhoenixKnight November 5th, 2008, 4:04 pm this thread is for those who, like me, play more than one or two instruments.
as for an original compisition I am still working on my opus because it takes a long time to map out each instruments path through the melody.
I play, in no specific order: guitar (Lead and rythym), bass, drums, clarinet, piano, sax, and a little trumpet.
I have been playing guitar since 1986, the only instrument I have played longer (though not with near the same constant pace) is clarinet. I have played bass and lead guitar since 2002-2003, and I have only been playing piano since about 3 months ago but already someone has said I should go to college and become a composer. (LIES! its all LIES! I sound horrible IMHO, but then again I am so super-critical of my skills, I do not brook anything less then absolute perfection)
I would love to hear from other musician who are multi instrument-skilled.
8m57w6 November 5th, 2008, 10:22 pm Oh, me!!!! I'm a multi-instrument player!!!!
The one I play least is probably recorder. And I don't mean the when you're in school and first learning to read music type of recorder. I played alto and soprano recorder for a while, and even attempted bass, but it's harder than you'd think!!! I haven't played it in quite a while though.
I also play a bit of percussion. Mostly like, African and Latin type of instruments and styles. I learned that and the recorder through handbells, which I play at my church. They are probably my favorite instrument of the ones I play. They are so pretty, and something different, too. And lots of fun!!
I've been playing flute for the longest. I started that in third grade at school, and played it all through 8th grade. I still do play it in high school, but only during marching band season. In concert season, I play tuba. Yeah, you heard me right. Tuba. This came about my freshman year when the band I was in didn't have enough low brass players. My director said flute players often do well switching to tuba for some reason, so I volunteered to switch. :D
gipro2003 November 6th, 2008, 12:52 am I play multiple instruments as well!
I started out playing French Horn in 6th grade, but our band instructors weren't really focused on it too much and switched us all over to trumpet, which I was really good at.
In 8th grade, I switched over to baritone, which I played throughout high school, with the exception of some French horn during concert season.
I also took piano lessons for a while, and still play on occaison during my (rare) free time.
Hysteria November 12th, 2008, 3:37 pm I can play:
guitar, bass guitar, synth (properly- programming I guess is a better term), piano/keyboard, saxophone, violin, drums and clarinet. Currently I only play guitar and piano as those are the only instruments I personally own now.
Been playing guitar for... ummm 6ish years? Piano for about 14.
Insomniatic November 20th, 2008, 8:14 am I can do guitar, drums and piano, mostly by ear
Lucybird January 11th, 2009, 5:33 pm I can play piano and violin. Although I go through phrases of playing and not playing. I really need a new bow for my violin as mine is in a really bad state. I sing too, although mainly I only sing along to CDs these days!
Croggles January 13th, 2009, 4:33 am This year marks my eleventh year as a pianist - I'm not an amazing piano player, but I am passionate about the piano. I also own a synthesizer, but you don't play synthesizer, you play around with one. My other main instrument is bass clarinet (I've played one for three years now), and I'm capable of playing clarinet as well, my first wind instrument.
Instruments I'd like to learn how to play include guitar, the electric bass, violin, and the tenor saxophone. I am trying to master my mouth positioning for potential trumpet playing. I just can't seem to get the whole lip thing - but I'm practicing!
Siriusly_C July 13th, 2009, 10:22 am I play violin, bass guitar, and i'm starting on playing drums.
Been playing violin for about 5 years, and bass guitar for about 2 years.
HeadLikeAHole July 22nd, 2009, 11:23 am I have only a little formal musical training (a few guitar lessons about 10 years ago) but I can sing, play both lead and rhythm guitar (I'm the singer and only guitarist in a power trio), bass, drums, piano (and keyboard) and synths, and I want to learn the saxophone once I can afford to.
Now if you ask whether I can play any of these well...you'd probably get a different response.
skistar123 July 22nd, 2009, 7:17 pm guitar, piano, drums, bass, flute (recorder and ocarina as a child haha). I want to buy myself a sax, and i have been known to give a very sqeaky rendition of twinkle twinkle little star on the violin. ;)
Desert_Rose July 27th, 2009, 12:04 am Over the past nine years I've learned flute, euphonium, percussion, piano, saxophone, recorder, fife, ukulele, guitar and piano.
I have been constantly told that I should study music in college but I don't plan on it.
Gladheon August 6th, 2009, 4:51 am I can play the clarinet and flute rather well, and I've attempted the bari. sax and bass clarinet as well. I wish I could play the violin or bagpipes (they are a lovely instrument, really), but I can't find anyone in my town to teach me.
Scissors August 11th, 2009, 10:25 am I play:
- Drums (Joey Jordison Signature Pearl drumkit with Paiste Joey Jordison cymbals with Promark PM TX 515 W Joey Jordison and Ahead Joey Jordison sticks (NOTE TO DRUMMERS: DO NOT USE AHEADS ON WEAK CYMBALS! They'll break and bend and stuff like that.))
- Guitar (ESP LTD EC-401 (Black) with Ibanez medium picks.)
- Microphone (Rode NT3)
- Sampler (Korg Electribe ESX 1)
I'm not in a band, and I'm don't plan to be in one. I neither actually record any of my things, as I play for myself and not for others.
leah49 August 17th, 2009, 11:38 pm Well, I play the piccolo, flute, and the piano. I'm not very good at the piano, but I did take lessons for two years. I have a keyboard that I practice on. It's different than the piano, so I guess I should say I can play the keyboard instead.
I can play the recorder ;). You know, most people learn in elementary school. In second grade we learned in music class and then I moved and the new school taught it in fourth grade. I can play basic things on it like Hot Cross Buns.
I began teaching myself how to play my brother's bass guitar, but then he moved out taking the guitar with him and I never got back around to it.
Elphie_Rose_13 August 22nd, 2009, 9:04 pm Hey! You guys are my kind of people.
I play:
-Guitar
-Viola
-Trombone
-Piano (a bit)
-a leeeeeedle bit of Bass
-Cymbals (I was taught some of the basics...)
-A little trumpet
-I can squeak on a Sax
-I've gotten real notes out of a Flute
-I did Recorder in elementary
-Numerous percussion instruments of Elementary years (Xylophone, ocean drum... etc)
And I sing... I'm a soprano, and OH! I can play the pitch pipe... Yeah... I'm good...
I agree with Gladheon... I want to learn how to play the bagpipes... They are exremely lovely!
APolaris June 28th, 2010, 12:56 am I always thought this was interesting. Dream Theater used to have a gimmick in which they'd all switch instruments during a live concert and become "Nightmare Cinema." For instance, John Petrucci would switch from guitar to drums, John Myung would switch from bass to keyboard, Mike Portnoy would switch from drums to bass, and Derek Sherinian would switch from keyboard to guitar. They also had a routine in which Portnoy, the drummer, would borrow Petrucci's guitar and play Van Halen's "Eruption" solo on it.
cathairetic November 29th, 2010, 1:09 am Here are the old lady's instruments:
Piano I am principal pianist for a symphony orchestra in which I also play
Viola.
Violin
Cello
Pipe Organ (33 years on the bench as a music director until I retired in 2001.
Recorder - soprano, alto, tenor
Classical and folk guitar
I have played a lot of wind instruments but I am not really accomplished at them. I just am able to figure them out and then play simple pieces.
My father studied to be a concert pianist and I studied piano with one. My mother was also musically talented so I guess it just runs in the family.
I also play piano for our local middle school and high school orchestras and am often asked to play for All-City, District and Regional Orchestras. I love it when we get to play pop, rock and video game soundtracks. What fun!
