Lady Gaga

Wasn't really sure where to put this, I was a bit iffy about what genre she sings in. Anyway, anyone a fan? I love her album, particularly her first two singles, Just Dance and Poker Face. I don't think the songs are that well written or that she's a great singer, the songs are all pretty catchy though.

I really liked 'Just Dance' so I had a listen to the rest of her album and was very disappointed. I think that her singles are clearly her best songs and the rest of it was pretty mediocre. None of the rest of her songs stood out for me. However, I still love 'Just Dance'; it's a classic dance-floor filler.

I agree with Raven_Girly. I work in a record shop and today we had her album on and I was bitterly disappointed. Just Dance and Poker Face are easily the best songs on there... I actually didn't find any others I liked :( THe rest are almost a completely different style.

I bought her CD but the only songs I listen to all the time are Just Dance, Poker Face, Lovegame, and Boys Boys Boys. I like the somewhat electronic sound to her music and her style.

The one's that Bio Android listed are definitely the most catchy on the album, for me anyway. However I also think "The Fame", "Paparazzi" and "Eh, Eh, Nothing else I can say" are all worth a shot.

I'm starting to get sick of her. They play her two most popular songs (Just Dance and Poker Face) on the radio all the time, but nothing else from her. Guess I'm going to have to start listening to my music on youtube because the radio is aggravating me with this. :grumble: I'm liking Poker Face better, though.

I really like Just Dance, and Poker Face is okay, but what I was really surprised to find out was that she wrote songs for many popular artists before starting her own singing career. (I think this includes bands such as the Pussycat Dolls, but don't quote me on that.)

Yeah.. I'm okay with Lady Gaga. Generally speaking hers wouldn't be my type of music, but I got to listening a bit more when I lost a bet and had to buy two tickets to her concert in this city in July. :D

I do kind of like her, but I wonder how she will sound live. I suppose it goes without saying that Poker Face is my favourite song of hers- there's no denying that she's got talent, she was a strong music producer and yes, she wrote for other bands, before her own career kicked off- and so I hope seeing her live will be good. :)

I agree with you on this. And to add to it, I went to see her the other night. She played over 20 minutes of Poker Face, which pleased the fans, but I'm generally speaking not one, so I was disappointed with it. And I was mildly disappointed with her too. She talked a lot and played for just about a hour. No doubting she has a strong voice, but I had really expected more from her. Pity. :(

I absolutely love "Poker Face" (no exaggeration, but I think it's one of the best mainstream pop singles I've ever heard in over 30 years of listening to popular music), but so far nothing else she's done has at all excited me (maybe I should give it another listen, though).

I hate to sound like an old fart, but I am glad that after a couple of decades of all-girl "groups" that can't play any instruments or write any songs, there's a lot of really talented female musicians like Gaga coming up now.

Yes, "Poker Face" is great! She has a lot of talent, and I think it's great that she writes her own songs, which shows she has alot of creativity.

You should listen to some of her other songs! "Beautiful, Dirty, Rich" and "LoveGame" are both really good.

I must be random, but I do love her hair, (even though it's a wig) and her costumes. Some people say they're too crazy, but I really enjoy seeing what she can come up with to wear next!

Lady Gaga dresses kind of funky, and when she performs you can't but wonder if she's insane or something  That's what makes her likeable though haha.

I do like some of her songs (especially Poker Face), as they have catchy beats that are good for dancing to at parties etc., but I really do not like Lady Gaga as an artist. I know that she does have musical ability unlike other pop stars, can play an instrument, yada yada, but maybe its just that she's not my cup of tea, or the style of music I normally listen to. Either way, I don't hate her, but doubt I'll ever love her or buy an album.

I'm the kind of person who usually strays away from mainstream music, especially pop, but I must say that Lady Gaga has good reason to be popular. First of all, her songs are catchy. They're not the best, definitely not, but they're as catchy as heck. Second, although she doesn't have the best voice live, she is a great performer. I watched her performance of Poker Face on American Idol last season; AMAZING performance. Just brilliant.
Her songs are very much overplayed on the radio, and that tends to make her songs become a bit annoying to listen to, but she, as an artist, is definitely one of the big sensations of the music industry, at the moment.

I'm not to fond of her fashion sense, though. Sure, it's unique and revolutionary (I guess. hahaha) but it's not a very flattering look.

I have to agree on the fact that some of her lyrics are dumb. Paparazzi's lyrics get on my nerves, that song is not my cup of tea from her. Poker Face's lyrics make absouletly no sense, but the song makes up for that because it has a catchy beat, and the quirky lyrics kind of grow on you after awhile. :p

People like her use gimmicks to hide their mediocre talent. I thought her bringing the girl in a wheelchair on stage and then walking around with a crutch was demeaning to handicapped people.

By the time she did the piano thing with the blood, I couldn't watch anymore. If the song was good, I might have made it, because one of my favorite dancers was back-up and had a very short dance with her, but I found the song to be repetitive and boring.

That piano part really bothered me too, it was just annoying. I think the point of the blood is because in the video for Paparazzi, supposedly the boy she's talking about in the song pushes her off of the roof of a builiding, or something like that, so I'm guessing that's what that whole part was about. I was a teeny bit grossed out by that, it was kind of wierd to see her hanging by a chandiler with blood running down her face!

What I love about Lady GaGa is that she's not like every other pop star. She is really eccentric and umpredictable, like you never know what she's going to do next. Like the VMAs, for example. I actually haven't heard Bad Romance yet. Is that one of her songs coming out off of The Fame Monster? Because I don't remember there being a song titled that off of The Fame.

Manufactured image.

Compared to music acts of the past, she's about as eccentric and unpredictable as a brick. This is actually not true with Lady Gaga. For one while her music is the anti-statement of modern pop radio music, she's hardly a Madonna putting up an act or fitting to a manufactured image the studio's have painted her. She's the exact opposite of what Madonna was.

Btw, has anyone seen the Bad Romance video? It's probably too innapropriate to post here. But it's pretty crazy, but I dig the almost Kubrickian nature of it. I kind of got a 2001 homage from it.

I've seen a ton of music videos with people just partying in them. But then you look at ones like "Paparazzi" and wonder "What the heck?" At least I know that's what my parents think.

I haven't seen the clips for 'Bad Romance' ( Haven't even heard that song anywhere) or 'Love Game', I've really liked the others. Lady Gaga's crazy fashion sense and style is what makes her so famous. It's also what makes her far more interesting.

Bad Romance has been on repeat on my iPod for the past couple of days! :p I am completely addicted to the song! It has such a catchy beat and lyrics! I think it's Gaga's best!

Also, has anyone heard her song, Sleepless? She performed it on the American Music Awards and Ellen. It's actually pretty slow and not synthesized and done over alot. It's really good! I recommended checking out! :)

Yeah, some of her outfits are cool, but about 60% of the time it's unflattering and it seems like she's trying too hard to be innovative ahaha.

Man, her performance at the VMA still gives me the chills! It was so epic--just when I think I'll get tired of her, she comes up with something new. XD

The Bad Romance Music Video was pretty impressive, albeit a bit dirty (but hey that's her style). The choreographing was fantastic, as well as her various outfits, the camera/lighting work too. The song is pretty good in itself; however, I still prefer paparazzi. :) The vocals for Bad Romance sound less auto-tuned and more true to Lady Gaga's singing voice.

Yes, it was quite impressive! She sounded the best she's ever sounded live. My favorite part was when she started playing the piano and singing her song Speechless. :wow: It's one of my new favorite songs by her.

I really loved the choreography too! It was probaley the best I've seen in any of her music videos that I've watched. Some of the Poker Face choreography was cool too, but I didn't care for it much, which was disappointing because that was my favorite Lady Gaga song before Bad Romance came along.

Me! I haven't gotten to listen to the whole thing yet, but if the whole album sounds like Bad Romance or Speechless, I'll definitely love it.

And yes Shingie, her vocals are quite amazing in the song. I love how much emotion she put into it. I found out online that the song was written to her dad because he is an acholic and she wanted him to stop drinking.

Definitely! I can't wait till this year's VMA's so I can see if she's performing or not; I think they should always have Lady Gaga, she brings the house down!

Yes, Dance In the Dark is really good, I think it's probaly one of the best on the album. I realized that this is like the first song Gaga's actually ever wrote that doesn't use first person! She says "she" instead of "I" in the song!

I hope Telephone is a huge hit! So far, I've only heard that here in the United States, it's gone to number 20 on the Billboard Hot 100, but I think if radio stations start playing it more it could start climbing the charts.

And congrats to Gaga for winning two Grammy awards last night! She won "Best Dance Recording" for Poker Face and "Best Electronic/Dance Album" for The Fame. I still can't believe Taylor Swift beat her out for "Album of the Year" though...:grumble:

I remember going to see her live and having people take their children out because they felt it was a bit over the top to be exposing their kids to- which was understandable, and I appreciate her need to be unacceptable and cool, but frankly I wouldn't be a fan. I think she tries too hard to be different, when in fact her mere songs are different enough to warrant her overall inclusion in the scene. I'm still not bought though, because I really only like the songs that have made the charts... which seems to say that I disregard the rest; I assure you that I listened to both The Fame and the Fame Monster, and I just didn't like her overall...

I think Lady Gaga brought pop music to another, different level. She is not afraid to cross boundaries and has no limits whatsoever. I admit that she is quite artistic and her songs are rather catchy.. but still. I don't understand her attitude at all, although that is exactly, among her music of course, that makes her such a success.

I just came on here to comment about that song. Does anybody else think it sounds a lot like Don't Turn Around by Ace of Base? I'm not a big Lady Gaga fan & even though I enjoy SOME of her songs, I don't go "gaga" for them (heehee). I'm a huge Ace of Base fan & it really irritates me that the media & big Gaga fans are screaming bloody murder that Christina Aguilera is coping Gaga but instead of saying "Gaga copied Ace of Base", there's remixes of Alejandro & Don't Turn Around. I just wish it'll be fair & give Gaga the same scrutiny that Aguilera is getting

So I just discovered that one of Gaga's songs has references to Hitchcock! :wow: I saw this in someone's sig on a different forum-

I want your Psycho, your Vertigo stick
I want you in my Rear Window, baby, you're sick

Now I don't care for Gaga so this basterdization of my favorite director's films is irritating. If I liked the song and/or artist I'd probably find it cool :p

Now that being said, she has a few decent songs (Bad Romance def not one of 'em) and some are great to dance to (ie Telephone for Cha-Cha-Cha)

It's only offensive if you don't know what she's talking about in those lines. Read her thoughts on those lines. Here, I'll provide them:

"What I'm really trying to say is I want the deepest, darkest, sickest parts of you that you are afraid to share with anyone because I love you that much."

There's nothing offensive about that. Everyone has those parts. She just chose to make Hitchcock references to get her point across.

At least Lady Gaga has the class to only allude to such acts in her lyrics instead of blatantly and crassly stating them like many artists on the radio these days. Looking at what some other artists get away with saying, it's clear that, if she had wanted to, she could have used far more obvious lyrics in lieu of Hitchcock references and words in other languages.

I don't mind the implied meaning of Gaga's lyrics in Poker Face etc, but there are certain songs I don't like playing too loud on my speakers incase my parents here the words :rotfl:

Didn't realise there was a Gaga thread on here or I would have posted in here sooner! Personally I love her, although I preferred her early on when she wasn't quite as out there, I remember when she first hit the UK and people thought she was strange for going out in a leotard in winter, that seems quite tame now :D

I'm a big lover of pop music and what I love about Gaga is that she's proven you can be a musician and a pop star, most people see pop as a manufactured genre full of people who don't have a proper musical background but Gaga does and I love that :) and she writes the best pop songs around :D

I absolutely love Gaga. Every song that she has written is a Godsend. Starting off with Poker Face, Bad Romance, Telephone, Paparazzi etc. She's just had a string of hits, and due to the hard times we face, it's good to see someone willing to defy the odds. And I'm glad that she does not follow the trends when it comes to fashion. She loves to be an individual and doesn't care what anyone thinks about it. She's an excellent singer/songwriter and hopefully will be around to entertain us for years to come.

I know, I'm so excited! I still can't believe we have to wait until May for the album, but as long as we get new music, who cares!? If it's taking this long (well, what feels long) to release and get everything recorded, I think the album's going to be pretty epic.

I do hope she wins some Grammy's this year. Last year she won "Best Dance Album" and "Best Dance Recording" I think, but it seemed like she got a little bit robbed in the bigger categories. :grumble:

What she's up for this year:

Album of the Year - The Fame Monster
Best Pop Female Vocal Performance - Bad Romance
Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals - Telephone (ft. Beyonce)
Bet Pop Vocal Album - The Fame Monster
Best Dance Recording - Dance In the Dark

Born This Way is awesome! I hear a hint of Madonna when listening to the song. The lyrics, I personally think, are great and I think Gaga did a great job with it. Maybe she'll even perform it at the Grammy's tonight?

And speaking of the Grammy's, we should cross our fingers she takes home some awards tonight. And her performance is probably going to be epic.

Some people have been saying they were disappointed due to extreme overhyping, but Born This Way exceeded my expectations. I saw the lyrics before the song was released and I was like oh god, this is gonna be some preachy, melodramatic, cheesy flop. But then it was a Madonna-esque club number, which I found hugely relieving. And it definitely echoes "Express Yourself," which is one of like 4 Madonna songs that I like, so I was actually pleased about it. That being said, I wouldn't call it my favorite Gaga song. Still awesome, though.

I wasn't sure when I first heard Born This Way, but then I wasn't sure with Bad Romance at first and it didn't stop me loving it after a few plays :D

I think for me it's lost a little bit of the Gaga uniqueness, usually her songs I just can't imagine being sung by anybody else but this one has a bit of a generic sound, I'm liking it more each time I hear it though :) and the lyrics are definitely Gaga, no doubt about that :D

I'm excited for her new album, The Fame was amazing, as was The Fame Monster :) I couldn't fault any of the new tracks on The Fame Monster especially so I'm hoping this album will be one of those albums where I don't skip a track :D

I've found myself pounded into submission by the saturation campaign of the last eight months or so. I can't call myself a true fan, but I like some of the songs and respect what she's doing. However, it does seem like she's trying to compress Madonna's nearly three-decade career arc into under five years, which is just a bit jarring. The response to recent work (particularly Judas) indicates a shift in popular perception and political climate even from the tail end of the Bush years which is somewhat heartening. However, it does make me laugh remembering that there was "controversy" over the video for "Like a Prayer."

I just think Edge of Glory would have made a better lead single, but then I guess Born This Way was a talking point and helps that it's the name of the album too. Judas has grown on me a lot, although there are a lot of similarities to Bad Romance in my opinion, not that that makes it bad.

I think Lady Gaga is a Madonna wannabe and her music videos have become so weird but I can't deny the beat of many of her songs makes for good dance numbers. :p Her songs have been featured on Dancing with the Stars quite a few times...usually for a team Cha-Cha-Cha or something. They are also great for West Coast Swing. :tu: I enjoy dancing to Just Dance, Telephone, Bad Romance, Alejando, and Born This Way...even though a couple of those are pretty annoying to listen to at any other time, lol. As for her latest song Judas, I don't like it and I'm not quite sure I understand what the context is supposed to be, other then that Judas was the disciple who betrayed Jesus of course.

Thanks, I'll have to check them out! :D

I tagree she's losing that edge, but for me I thought Born This Way was too generic, when it first came out I just though "anyone could have written/sang this" and what I like about Gaga is that she puts her own style on things, yes she gets compared to a lot of artists, ones she admits to taking influence from, but her songs still stood out against other songs on the radio. Born This Way didn't in my opinion :( But Judas has definitely grown on me :tu:

What do people make of her music videos? For me, I find them a bit too over the top, at the end of the day I usually watch a music video just to hear the song and see the dance moves, and having a 9 minute video puts me off a bit. I did like the Telephone video though :)

I think the only ones I saw were Just Dance and Bad Romance. Has anyone heard the Lullaby Version of Bloody Mary (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8tCFJ6zzEr4)? I think it's actually very pretty.

I love that, thanks for sharing! :) Bad Romance is one of my favourite videos I think :D

I'm a big fan too, I think The Fame Monster is one of my all time favourite albums, and I have a lot of respect for what she does. When she first came out I was glad she doing something with pop music, not just generic like other artists and I agree that her passion and dedication is what sets her apart :tu: I think sometimes the art/fashion side goes way over my head thought

I think I got what I asked for with the Edge of Glory video though, back to basics a bit  I was hoping for something that echoed the lyrics a bit more in that song, I think it's a powerful song and the video didn't reflect it as much.

she's losing some of her edge.

It's funny you say that cause I just heard her new one "Edge of Glory" and I was loving the song while not even realizing it was Gaga, lol.

Oh, and I discovered this vid the other day...she was fairly cute and normal at one point, lol

I'm a bit ashamed to admit it, but I actually enjoy Lady Gaga from time to time (it's often playing at work) I do not, however, enjoy that she seems to think she's the voice for the LGBT community  Same with Katy Perry, rubs me up the wrong way.

I like that Lady Gaga isn't like other pop stars at the moment, she's ridiculous and out there, but I like that (even if it is a little contrived).

I don't think that Gaga thinks she's the entire voice for the LGBT community but I like that she's reaching out to people that way. Born This Way signifies that it doesn't matter who you are because you were born this way and you have to accept that. I love the song and think it sends a good message to people. I haven't gotten the album because my mom and I listened to previews of it via Facebook and didn't like some of the songs on there. I do like Born This Way and Edge of Glory though.

I would also say that the Glee cast rocked on Bad Romance and Born This Way. I have both of those songs on two of my Glee albums.

I have a lot of respect for Lady Gaga and the positivity she's brought to the LGBT community (as opposed to Katy Perry who I think just needs to go away and stop trying so hard and stop trying to right her wrongs) but I think she's going on a bit too much. Like suddenly all these pop stars are cashing in on the LGBT market and it just rubs me up the wrong way. Don't get me wrong, I think she's genuine, I just think she needs to give it a rest for a while. Maybe I'm not good at explaining it, the LGBT community needs as much support as it can get, I just don't really think Lady Gaga is the right person to be the public face pushing it.

Anyway, I didn't mean to politicise it. Her music is fun and very much a guilty pleasure. Plus Weird Al did an awesome job with Born This Way

I find Katy Perry is generally a bit more tolerable then Gaga, but maybe that's just me

They certainly both have their annoying songs though. I mean I don't want to listen to "Waking Up in Vegas" or "Last Friday Night" any more then I do "Poker Face", "Paparazzi", or "Judas"

Oh I meant in terms of what they've done/tried to do for the LGBT community. I actually prefer Gaga over Katy Perry music-wise.

Sorry to come in here and suck out all the fun :p

I get where you're coming from, Hysteria, but I don't think Gaga's trying to "cash in" on that. I think she's genuinely trying to support a group of people who are overlooked a lot because of who they are. I like that about her. And I don't think you're "sucking the fun" out of this thread. It's a genuine thing to be concerned about.

Why I recently lost respect about her... I think it's a good thing to express yourself, but as an artist, through your music, and not by drawing the paparazzis attention with your wardrobe :/

I loved Edge Of Glory though :)

I do think some of her wardrobe choices are a bit out there and that she should tone it down. But I do like her expression sometimes.

I loved her new album! My definite favourite is "You and I". Why doesn't she make more rock ballads like that and "Speechless"?! I also like Bloody Mary (A LOT!) Americano, Born This Way, Electric Chapel and Marry The Night. Scheibe has a good beat

Did any of you guys watch her performance at the VMAs last Sunday? Best performance of the night, PLUS Brian May from Queen played guitar with her, wich was a definite plus  I was starting to get a bit tired of Lady Gaga and her whole over-the-top craziness, but that performance blew my mind, she's really very talented.

Plus, I LOVE her Joe Calderone character, lol. I have a thing for really theatrical characters XD

I don't think the songs are that well written or that she's a great singer, the songs are all pretty catchy though.

I think her songs (that she writes herself) are the best-written in pop music around today. The lyrics are actually really smart and witty. And, as you said, the music is so catchy :) And sorry but I disagree about her singing too. She is classically trained and if you ever hear her live performances you will know that she is an amazing singer. She has a very strong voice and she doesn't rely heavily on editing in the recording studio that many pop singers do today.

I LOVE Gaga! :D Literally Lady Gaga, Harry Potter and Wicked (the musical) are my passions in life! I saw her last tour The Monster Ball and it was easily the best concert I have ever been too (I met her afterwards too she is soooo nice!). I am obsessed with her latest album Born This Way and cannot wait for her next tour!

In my opinion, the greatest artist of our generation! (And many legends agree with me :))

I agree. Gaga is really good at what she does, and she even sings well live, a feat that many artists have trouble with. She's just awesome.

Poker Face just exploded and I couldn't resist. Since then I've really liked her music. Even if some of the things she does is pretty ridiculous. No one can deny that she's really changed things around the pop music industry.

I didn't like Lady Gaga at first, "Pokerface" really annoyed me.

But then I came to like her music, I guess through "Paparazzi" which I liked very much; I also liked "Bad Romance" and completely fell in love with "Telephone" <3
I don't really like the more recent stuff, though; it's nice music, but to me it's not as special as the songs I mentioned before. Especially with "Judas" I had the feeling she wants to sell it through "scandalous" title and lyrics.
So, I'm not a die-hard fan, but I like some of her songs very much.
I also kind of like the way she dresses, although that meat-dress of hers totally freaked me out >__>

She used to be that kinda artist I'd go "awwwww" at. Now she does rather addicting songs with good beat, even more than before... Can't decide which I like the best.

Not too interested in her lyrics though. Mostly. They can be fun and cool, but rarely very meaningful to me.

I cannot begin to explain my admiration for this woman. I would be a completely different person if I hadn't met her music, and she helped me out of depression and so many other obstacles... I wish more people would see what a brilliant artist she is, instead of assuming she's just another typical pop star... I think Born This Way is her best album yet. It contains so many themes like rebirth, identity, forgiving your betrayer, not letting your past determine your future, etc.

And she's also incredibly talented. She's been trained to play piano since she was 4, and she is an excellent piano player. She also writes and composes all of her music.. Her music videos also add even more depth to her songs. For instance, on the surface Telephone may seem like a song about dancing in a club and not answering your phone but it's actually a metaphor for being constrained by society and people around you..which is illustrated in the video where she escapes from a prison (symbolic for constraint) and she finds freedom. To almost every song she writes, there is a deeper meaning behind it.

Her fashion isn't exactly for shock value, it's just a part of who she is. Since she was as young as 5 she showed her interests in fashion different from others. The only reason she didn't dress as extravagantly as a teen was because she went to a Catholic school and her peers bullied her relentlessly for it. Only when she was free of those constraints was she able to be herself and express herself through fashion. Not only is her fashion to help her be herself, its to show her fans to be themselves and not be afraid to be a little different. Her constant changing of wigs, clothes, and makeup also symbolizes her themes of rebirth.
