Students who wish to be sorted should copy and paste the Sorting Hat questions into a new thread, named after their username. Other members will tell you which House they think you belong in based on your answers. The Official House Common Rooms are located in our Social Groups here: The Slytherin Common Room (http://www.cosforums.com/group.php?groupid=302), The Ravenclaw Common Room (http://www.cosforums.com/group.php?groupid=301), The Gryffindor Common Room (http://www.cosforums.com/group.php?groupid=300), The Hufflepuff Common Room (http://www.cosforums.com/group.php?groupid=299).

When answering please try to eleborate on your choices. Explanations of your answers are very helpful to the people who want to sort you :)

Also be aware that our houses are not the same as the houses in the book. All the houses have amazing and friendly people. So keep this in mind when answering the last question. Calling all Slytherins mean or Hufflepuffs stupid is incorrect and hurtful. Please take note of our Sorting Hat Rules (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=127356)

1. If you could spend a day with any Harry Potter character who would you choose and why?

2. Which Deathly Hallow would you choose?

3. Which magical pet would you bring with you to Hogwarts?

4. What would be your favorite subject at Hogwarts?

5. If you could ask J.K. Rowling to write one thing what would it be?

6. Would you play Quidditch? If so which position?

7. Which magical career would you choose?

8. What would your patronus be?

9. Which magical place would you most like to visit?

10. Pick one house you would prefer not to be in. (Optional)

If you do list the house you want to be sorted in, your comment will be deleted and all posts influenced by this will be removed as well.

To start a Sorting thread go here (http://www.cosforums.com/forumdisplay.php?f=250) and click on the thread starting button http://www.cosforums.com/images/dhus/buttons/newthread.gif. Copy the questions above into your thread and put your username as thread title.

Yes, you have to start a new thread answering the questions, and your fellow students will sort you in there. Once you get five votes for a house, the thread will be closed, you'll be officially sorted, and you'll be able to join the Common Room for your house.

That's why we let you say which house you don't want. You don't have to participate in your House if you don't want to though.

Regarding 3. Which magical pet would you bring with you to Hogwarts?

Does this mean any animal we'd really like to bring, or only of the 3 listed in the Hogwarts Requirements? (An Owl or a Cat or a Toad)

(And how'd Ron get away with having a rat anyway? That's not on the list.)

It'd be sweet if there was a way to get sorting info on the left pane user info part, (where username and avatar go) but I don't think that's technically possible.

I don't wanna give up my current sig picture because I can't have a regular avatar just yet. I suppose with quick bit of photoshop though, I could merge my sig pic with the house arms as one picture maybe..unless there are house objections?

You can use a crest smilie on your signature; that way, you'd get to keep your current picture, and you can show your house as well. The codes for those smilies are:

:gryff: :gryff:
:slyth: :slyth:
:huff: :huff:
:rave: :rave:

Remember that you can only have up to four smilies in your signature (be sure to check the Signature Content Policy (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=22990) for more info).

Hey, that'll work, for now, anyway! I'm still at least 120 posts from 300, and even then that's no guarantee of getting in Hogsmeade - which is what I need to get a regular avatar if I'm not mistaken.

Still, I really like the large house graphic.
Would there be any objection if, just for my signature, I p'shopped my current sig picture inside the Ravenclaw house pic somewhere, in effect, merging them ? Some forums don't like users changing their standard images or avatars, others don't care, so I figured I'd better ask even though it isn't specifically addressed in the rules.(it's an odd request to be sure)

Klio
March 4th, 2009, 5:05 pm
Grymmditch - just watch everyone else here! people change their sigs and avatars all the time!!! Of course, you have 300 pixels to play with, so you could easily have another image with yours, for example avatar sized, with some transparent space between them in one bigger gif - that woud basically look like two pictures next to each other, and no-one would be the wiser.

But if there were any objection to changing those pictures, a few of us would be in DEEP trouble all the time! :)

I said ravenclaw, but that's the fun thing about the sorting hat, you never know what people are gonna come up with for reason to put you into a house.

Labrynth
March 10th, 2009, 3:02 pm
Well you've got several people who seem to vote only for their house. And basing a house strictly on a Patronus seems weak. How about WHY they picked that Patronus.

Sorry but to me Hufflepuff is where you put everyone else. They're not smart enough for Ravenclaw, not ambitious enough for Slytherin and not brave enough for Gryffindor.

Vaguely amusing, but wholly inaccurate IMO.

I pick people for Hufflepuff if they are both brave, smart and hard-working :) It most certainly isn't for 'everyone else', IMO.

I think balance is the word here - our Gryffies tend to be perky, Raves investigative, Slyths... well... snarky  and the Huffs are - well, our Huffs are balanced! They know when/where to be perky, when/where to up the snark, when/how to ask questions...

And jumping into the fray and getting Gryffs and Slyths to drop the hexes and take up cookies is no mean feat, believe you me!

Labrynth
March 10th, 2009, 4:29 pm
Yeah that really kicks me out of the Hufflepuffs then cause frankly if they wanna blast themselves to bits that's their issue. I've got other things to do than play peace keeper.

Like I said, amusing, but flawed and not terribly accurate in my case. JMO

As someone who's identified with Hufflepuff House (as represented in the HP series) for a long time, I'm kind of offended by this analysis. I'm pretty smart, and at times I'm brave and ambitious. I'm also hard-working, patient, friendly, loyal, and value fairness. To me, the latter qualities are more important. That's why I sort myself into Hufflepuff (as I was also sorted here, with no votes for other Houses). Not because I feel unqualified for any of the other houses or rejected by them, but because I do feel qualified for Hufflepuff - and I refuse to see that as a bad thing. I also know a lot of people with these same Hufflepuff qualities, so I don't agree that it's "inaccurate" for people to be grouped this way.

Also, just because someone was sorted into one house doesn't mean they were automatically not qualified for the other houses. For example, Hermione - she was certainly "smart enough" to be in Ravenclaw, was she not? Her bravery was simply more of a factor (more dominant, more important to her, or however the Sorting Hat decides these things).

I don't mean to overreact, and I definitely don't want to start a big argument (there's that silly peacemaker thing, right? ;)) about this. It's just a game, after all, and of course everyone's entitled to their individual opinion. I just wanted to put in my two cents. :)

You know guys, I think we should keep this thread lighthearted. I am sure all of us have friends that have been sorted into Hufflepuff and I don't think that there is anything wrong with that. There are amazing people in every house.

Remember that you do not have to be sorted or accept your sorting. If you don't agree, just leave it at that.

Maybe we can just move on now. This is like LikeLuna says just a game. No need to get on the offensive.

You know, the whole sorting thing is tough. I've tried a whole bunch of different quizzes, and just talking with my friends and I seem to be evenly split between Ravenclaw and Slytherin. Go figure. I'm smart and evil. With uber sarcasm powers.I think it often depends on the way the quizzes are structured, such as which questions they ask. It is too bad they don't give you a two-housed result (like Slytherclaw or Ravenpuff) - I think that would be more accurate for many people.

It's probably one of the nicest advantages of the series that JK made us realize how less accurate a sorting actually works. Then I always liked the idea for the book. The acceptance with which a game like this is met makes me believe that many people enjoy it - probably more as a game than for real, though. But that's what we have here, too.

That's said I think I actually saw mixed sorting games online I believe, but didn't find them again when I checked now. :)

Klio
March 20th, 2009, 11:02 pm
I think I wouldn'[t enjoy it as much if we didn't have the Hogwarts Common Room. I have thought for a long time that this is a serious flaw in JKR's Hogwarts - not that she doesn't (sort of) say so, too - if not in those terms....

So yes, sorting is fun - but only if the game includes a chance to hang out with everyone. Although it is also nice to have a house common room where you can discuss quantum charms and the intricacies of Akkadian cuneiform hexes without having a Slytherin first year trying to challenge you to a duel ;)

Isn't that a bit simplistic? I am a won't play/not atheltic Ravenclaw (Slytherin second, almost certainly).

I agree with Klio, the categorization is simplistic, Dags.

I'm Gryffindor and I'm a Beater, and we have quite a number of Hufflepuffs in both teams currently playing. :)

I also agree that you learn more about people reading their explanations than looking at their choices.

It's just intended to be another piece of information for members to use in the Sorting. The position alone isn't that helpful but as other people have said in conjunction with your other answers it helps form a picture of where you should be.

I put that I would not want to be in Slytherin for my questions, but after I was sorted, even though I knew I would be Ravenclaw, I kind of wished that I haden't. When you see the question it is a knee jerk reaction. The house you would least like to be in, but that has more to do with it's charactoristics from the book than from the traits that you need here. Plus I have friends in the house, so it can't be all bad.

You're right, it's a knee-jerk reaction based on how Slytherins are depicted in the books. But even in the books, there are "good" Slytherins and at least one bad Gryffindor. Also, look at the number of "Slytherins Against Voldemort" signatures and the number of them who fought the Voldie takeover during the April Fool's Day War.

I just looked at some of the "application forms" for Sorting and found very refreshing that at least one new student declared s/he didn't want to be in Gryffindor!

From Sangie's newbie sorting thread:
You can always go to the common room :)

True if she was talking about the Hogwarts Common Room, but I think she meant the Gryffindor Common Room, as she was responding to the two Gryffindor votes she'd gotten.

And:
You need to be a member of this group to view its contents

You can't go into a House Common Room until you've been sorted into that House.

Which again makes me wonder: how many Hogwarts Students have created sockpuppets so that they can get them sorted into other houses and read what goes on in more than one House Common Room?

Yes, I know it's against the rules. But that won't stop all people.

gertiekeddle

Yes, I know it's against the rules. But that won't stop all people. That's true, people have already developed some motivation in the past to try those stuff out for getting a better standing in games and such. But for this (and for way more dangerous reasons coming out of it actually) CoS doesn't allow duplicate accounts. We never can detect them all, but we try our best to catch them.

You are right that the game is individual, so it won't do anyone any good to sneek into other houses.

And as gertiekeddle said, creating duplicate identities is against the rules. You can get in big trouble for it.

For anyone out there who is reading this whole thread before posting their own thread for sorting: It doesn't tell us anything much which Hallow you would choose if you put down the cloak without explaining why. It just tells us that you've read the Tale of Three Brothers and understand Hermione's rationale as to why the Cloak is best. Choosing the Cloak without telling why could be done by Puffs, Raves and Gryffs, though Raves are more likely to explain why, and Gryffs are most likely to choose it so they can sneak around being brave or playing pranks. So please give an answer longer than two words to question #2. Thank you.

You need to create a new thread with the answers in order to be sorted.

Kinda new

How do I make a new thread

Go back to the General Sorting Hat area, the one with the hogwarts common room thread. Near the left, top-ish there should be a new thread button, but the Staff might have disabled it for awhile, what with the temporary HBP forum:)

Sorry if that was overly vague, I do that to people:lol:

The Sorting Hat will stay open during the HBP release and new threads can be made.

However shaun2520 has already been sorted :)

how do you get youre thread posted?!?

Click the link at the bottom of this Sorting Hat sub-forum where it says "New Thread," copy+paste the questions from this thread's Original Post, and add in your answers.

If you've already done that, your thread might be in a Mod queue waiting to be approved.

I don't think Sorting Hat threads are Moderated that way, but things change a lot around here, especially with things like House Contests and pre-HBP movie hysteria going on.

The fun & game areas don't have a mod queue. :)

Didn't think so, but then again, hbponjuly15 hasn't got a Sorting Thread yet either. :hmm:

That's because they weren't online since their question was answered. :)

It occured to me last night why one of the questions is which house you don't want to be in. Harry told the sorting hat "not Slytherin" and of course we all know it is not the power that you have but the choices that you make that matter most.

*has spent the whole morning at Hogwarts so far sorting newbs*

What is it, because the movie is being released this week we're getting a rash of new students?

CoS Forums: where the Sorting doesn't take place on Sept. 1st, it happens in fluctuations with the movie releases.

oh im such a silly newb. guess i should have waited to edit my pic for a sig or use the sn lol
=p

i just havent gotten sorted on an HP forum in so long. I thought they did away with rpg type forums of HP. Most of the ones I was joined to, died out after the release of book 7. Didnt think this forum would have a sorting but I'd like to see anyways=p

I've looked in "thread tools" and eveywhere for a button to post a new thread; nothing doing! It's a mystery!

You can't find that button under thread tools.

Go to a forum you want to create a new thread in and click on this button: http://www.cosforums.com/images/dhus/buttons/newthread.gif

(or go to forum tools in the respective forum but the ^ button is easier)

Thanks so much Hes. A little exploration with your advice has unsnarled it for me. (I get so lost here! At my main HP thread, I'm a mod, and can see most of the buttons most of the time. Spoiled, I guess.)

I can imagine that in that case you feel lost :)

Especially if other forum software is used!

How long does getting sorted take?

gertiekeddle
July 27th, 2009, 10:31 am
It's different since it depends a bit on how many members are online the moment you post your thread. If you look through the threads the already sorted members have posted you'll find that it was often done within an hour in the beginning, but now sometime takes almost a day. :)

I've already gotten 6 straight votes for Ravenclaw (yay!) but my thread is still open. How long does it take for it to close? I thought it only took 5 votes. How do I know when I've officially been sorted?

You are - congrats! A minute, I'll put the note in asap and close it. We just were a bit thin on staff for this over the weekend. :)

I don't think it's right to Sort people into the House they say they don't want in Question #10.

I kind of thought that's why we have Question #10.

:agree: I agree. I don't think the person you're talking about did it intentionally though, because she/he said she only saw the Potions answers before she/he posted the house. But still, you should be reading all of the answers and make a well-informed choice! It's only fair to the person being Sorted, right? I'm starting to think we need like a Sorting committee or something, instead of letting random people do the Sorting. Some of the Sortings I've seen have made me scratch my head. :hmm:
