the weather is heating up in Phoenix, it hit 100 degrees for a short time today. it will be hot all week and then it will cool off to 76 degrees by next Friday. (one week later)

I can tell you how to make Cornish Clotted Cream, Leah. It's gorgous on scones and Devonshire Splits. Home made strawberry jam. I've ordered stawberry plants from my favourite gardener suppliers.

I've never had clotted cream before, but I'd love to try some. I've only heard good things about it.

Here's some chocolate ice cream for those who want it! Enjoy!

Can the term "merry men" be accidentally mistaken as sexist if I were to apply it as a form of greeting to the female regulars in this thread?

LyraLovegood
April 11th, 2011, 5:32 pm
I wouldn't do so; I've been known to address a roomful of ladies as "you guys" without a second thought.

I have found myself taking offense at the word "broad" as applied to females recently, and even more at the much worse b-word being plastered on men's trucks and t-shirts. Totally tasteless, if you ask me!

Hopefully things will pick up in here soon. Almost it seems like the whole board has sworn off partying for the Lenten season. ;)

Today's Earth Day - We should celebrate it.

http://www.google.com/logos/2011/earthday11_sr.jpg

Any suggestions? Do a rain dance, or a sun dance, barefoot in the grass, with flowers in your hair? Eat bio (but still yummy) food? Bake an environmentally friendly cake?

Come in with ideas, please. :)

Oh, and yes, Happy Easter, everybody!

leah49

Ah, Earth Day. I didn't remember until today. Reduce, reuse, recycle...only use items that can be reused or recycled in the NEP thread today?

merrymarge
April 23rd, 2011, 6:28 am
The first Earth Day that I remember was 1970. We had a newspaper drive. we collected tons of newspaper to recycle. I remember when computers became very popular. We were told that we would soon go to a paperless society. I don't think that has happened. In fact, I read somewhere that we have more paper being used. We are printing out a lot of paper. There is a fear of losing info. if we have a computer crash, so we print out stuff to save.

leah49
April 23rd, 2011, 7:23 pm
I don't think we'll ever go to a paperless society. We use paper as backup, plus some people print out every little thing they see.

We need to reduse our use of paper and reuse and recycle the paper we do use. Use both sides of the paper. It bugs me when I see people taking notes on only one side of the notebook paper. Would it really kill them to use the other side? Don't use a fresh sheet for each day. Start at the first blank spot after yesterday's notes. You'll save paper and it all be more compact. Think about it. The less paper you use, the less paper you buy, the less money you spend.

merrymarge
April 24th, 2011, 2:07 am
I have done that for ages, writing on both sides of paper for note taking. My problem is I print a lot of stuff when I don't need to.

I have done that for ages, writing on both sides of paper for note taking. My problem is I print a lot of stuff when I don't need to.

I only don't do that (the printing stuff) because my ink's usually low and I rarely go buy more.

HE IS RISEN!

He is risen indeed!

I went to church for both services since I am in the orchestra, had Easter dinner with my mom, dad, and sister, then went back to church for our evening service which was an Easter presentation. Then I came home and watched some reality television (I did catch an inning or two of baseball, but it started at 4PM and I had to be at the church at 4:45, so I missed most of it, darn it).

Wait, you didn't ask how we spent our Easter holiday. Oh, well, I told you anyway.

The bad part was my sister scheduled a private at 6PM claiming that she didn't know we were putting on an Easter presentation at church. First off, I've been telling her for the past few weeks. Second off, it's Easter! Don't schedule a private on Easter! (a private is private lessons--she's a dance coach).

Um, do you have to? Because I don't find it fun when people swoop & startle & make people drop drinks at all. But if it's the only thing that makes you happy, I suppose I'll have to learn to tolerate it.

Well, I've cut out the stalking and startling, but I just can't stop swooping. Consider it a form of running away from scary crowds of people, because I'm a shy Sadira in real life. Parties tend to freak me out a little, because they're so noisy and bright and people-y... but I have decided I must overcome this.

Uh-oh. I have talked too much. Now I must go lurk in a corner.

don't feel too bad, I, too, don't like large crowds of people. swooping is o.k., but don't startle people because if they drop their drinks or food, they will be unhappy and there will be a huge mess to clean up. Me, I like to celebrate spring. Here in Phoenix, the weather is still cool in the A.M. and in the evenings. it won't be long before we have permament triple digit temps. and some people become miserable. As long as the air conditioner works, I don't mind the heat too much.
Oh, it's spring, spring, spring!!

Love the pics, Susan Bones! I like spring, but I love summer better because there's no fear (here in the southeastern US) of cold weather. Just this past week it was in the lower 60s upper 50s for a day or two. A bit confusing for the season, honestly.

Here it is spring in Phoenix, AZ and the northern part of the state might get snow. we have mountains in Flagstaff and that's where the snow is heading.
We do get lovely spring flowers in the desert, but, this year it's been pretty dry and not too many flowers are blooming. Not complaining, just saying. In case people don't realise we get seasons here in the state.

We keep partying. Schools will be ending the final term in a matter of weeks. The first few weeks of summer are glorious with the promise of fun. And a new HP will be playing soon.

I has a happy to celebrate: my son came home safe from his TDY in Morocco, much earlier than anyone expected.

The reason being that the Army forked over loads of money to send the troops over their, but failed to fund the actual training program they were supposed to do. Typical Army SNAFU, there.

But, he is so happy to be home with his wife and my grandbebees that I'm very happy! I wish I were close enough to throw a spontaneous, unplanned Welcome Home party for him.

Also, I took a risk and let SageRacer color my hair. I never even considered coloring my hair before Sage told me it might be fun, try it, I might like it etc. I love the way it turned out! And Sage, who actually did it all--picking the color and applying it to my head, and telling me what to do and not do while the dye worked--thinks I look fantastic.

So I'm happy even though the clouds came back after 3 days of glorious sunshine.

To miracle dogs and time with family!

Last year it was the deer making my tomatoes unhappy. They kept reaching over the fence and eating the top half of the plants. I had no idea deer could eat poisonous tomato leaves, but since they kept doing it apparently it doesn't bother them. They ate all the leaves off my butternut squash plants too. I ended up weaving a net of twine over the garden to discourage them from jumping the fence. The poor tomatoes never recovered though and the fruit never ripened. Now I have a six foot fence. I think both me and the tomatoes will be happy this year.

Party on!

(btw, for my brother's 30th birthday last Sunday his wife made a chocolate coconut cake...it wasn't the chocolate coconut cake I envisioned...it was a chocolate cake with a coconut marshmallow middle, but it was good nonetheless).

I'm not a gardener, either, but my aunt maintains a pretty nice garden all year round. I'm not sure what she's got planted right now, but I know she's planted lettuce, cabbage, carrots, beans, peas, tomatoes, onions, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and collards. Yeah, sometimes it can feel like there are 15+ players on the DL. Players like to get hurt in groups for some reason. My team is Atlanta and we've had our share of injuries. Baseball is an excellent reason to party!

No partying? Well, I'll just have to bring in some:

Sorry, nothing nudges me out of the party mood like conversations about pro team ball sport.

But I have a party spirit today, I've finished Spring Term! I turned in two final exam and one last homework assignment today, and I'm done until June 20th. Yes, I'm taking Summer Classes. I really want to finish my degree and get a job!

I keep hoping, Marge, and I've been applying for entry level jobs in my field of study. Still no nibbles on my resume, though. :sigh:

But I have four days off, starting tomorrow, and I'm ready to party until Summer Term begins!

we are having a party because of the announcement by JKRowling and Pottermore. We don't know what it is, but because it is from Jo herself, we are super excited. Let the party begin and hope it lasts for a good long while. Bring food and drinks and dance the night away.

Now all I need is a job in the field. I will be ecstatic if I get hired as a Healer's Admin pretty much anywhere. St. Mungo's would be favorite. :D

I'm applying to a job a day, basically, but not a nibble yet. Unless you count the completely unrelated job offers, like Independent Farmers Insurance Agent or online filtering some CEO's emails and forwarding them overseas to wherever said CEO actually is.

But my grades make me happy. And my boss at my internship is proud of me too.

To all American Men with beautiful little childern: Happy Father's Day!!

With tomorrow being Independence Day in the United States I thought we could have our own party here, of course. Anyone can join us. You don't have to be from the USA. It's a time for BBQ, sun, fireworks, music, and fun. I'll update this post with decorations, music, and food. Hold tight.

Ooh, pool party! And DH Part 2 Premiere Party! Last Thursday was the World Premiere in London. Saturday was the premiere in Dublin. Last month they had the premiere in Madrid (don't ask me how that was scheduled before the world premiere). Tonight's the US Premiere. Friday is the theatrical premiere.

Tomorrow is the first day of fall. We need to celebrate with fall food and drink. The weather is still warm in Phoenix, so bring something cold to drink too.

GrimeldaDursley

I'll bring some pumpkin pie and some cider. And a cooler full of soft drinks. I've got a nice bottle of Ogden's Old Firewhisky for the adults. Enough firewhiskey and maybe I'll do my famous "dance of the leaves".
