Hes April 15th, 2009, 10:24 pm Welcome to the Party that Never Ends.
It doesn't matter what day it is, somehow our members always find a reason to celebrate. So join in and have fun ^_^
Mod note:
A party isn't a party without food and drinks and dancing. However please keep in mind we do not allow mock drunken behavior. So keep it sober. We have a lot of very young minors on site :)
FleurduJardin April 15th, 2009, 10:37 pm Thank you, Hes. :)
All right, everybody, let's start with a group dance. No other reason but to celebrate the opening of a new party thread.
http://assets.nydailynews.com/img/2008/10/23/alg_hsm.jpg
Join in, bring food and drink, not to mention your dancing shoes. Remember to behave yourselves however. :relax:
ETA: To check on the earlier party thread, click on the link below. There are some awesome pictures and videos in there, and some pretty witty comments, it'd be a pity to let them fall into oblivion. :)
Never-Ending Party I (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=119147)
witchsmart April 16th, 2009, 2:56 am Woo! A new thread! Some food to celebrate:
http://www.rotorob.com/uploaded_images/buffet_table-768009.jpg
Anyone up for the traditional Never-Ending Party conga line?
Conga conga con-ga! Conga conga con-ga! Conga conga con-ga!
LyraLovegood April 16th, 2009, 5:06 am I don't understand; why start a new NEP thread when all the Quibbler threads are about to be locked down for the Trap-Door Contest anyway?
Muggle_Magic April 16th, 2009, 5:44 am I don't understand; why start a new NEP thread when all the Quibbler threads are about to be locked down for the Trap-Door Contest anyway?
I guess Hes and Fleur didn't know that when they decided to open the new thread.
FYI the Quibbler threads are all closed for the duration of the contest. :)
Darn and blast, I had some pictures to post, and I was ready to join the Conga line, but that'll have to wait. It's less than 24 hours to the start of the contest. We can all meet back here to celebrate victory or drown defeat sorrow after the contest is done.
lil_snuffles April 16th, 2009, 6:04 pm *Starts dancing* :D
LyraLovegood April 16th, 2009, 6:41 pm Will it be over in time for us to celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
*sings while others dance*
FleurduJardin April 16th, 2009, 11:59 pm *Starts dancing* :D
Yay! Bravo!
Will it be over in time for us to celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
Hopefully. Or at least hope we'll be in-between two parts of the contest.
*sings while others dance*
*Keeps the rhythm by clapping hands* http://www.avenueviet.com/forums/images/smiles/clapper.gif
This may be the last post before the whole Quibbler is closed. See you all when it reopens!
Nadia April 17th, 2009, 12:25 am Just FYI; both this thread and the Quidditch one will remain open, since they don't require the characters to sign in regularly :)
witchsmart April 17th, 2009, 3:18 am Ah, so the characters are involved. This should be very interesting indeed. :)
*dances to the beat*
Colonel_Fubster April 17th, 2009, 7:05 am This thread needs cake.....

KeepItDark April 18th, 2009, 4:36 am *dances*
so, where are the beverages?
witchsmart April 18th, 2009, 4:42 am Fleur's brought in some wine. I myself would like some of that cake.
KeepItDark April 18th, 2009, 4:52 am wine upsets my stomach... i'll be in search of some water.
Colonel_Fubster April 18th, 2009, 7:09 am *adds tea and lemonade to the buffet*

FleurduJardin April 18th, 2009, 11:19 pm We need some food to go with all those drinks, soft and alcoholic. :)
http://www.ripon.edu/podcast/images/buffet-food.jpg
Feel free to come in and nibble while you're working on your song for the First Challenge. :)
Green_Arrow April 18th, 2009, 11:42 pm Colorful food always manages to get my mouth watering! :D
FleurduJardin April 19th, 2009, 8:01 pm I need some inspirational food to write my song. Can someone please oblige? Too busy thinking to go shopping. ;)

LyraLovegood April 20th, 2009, 6:08 pm ******NOM NOM NOM NOM NOM*****
Oh sorry, was that supposed to be enough for everyone?
[/Garfield impersonation]
BubblyShell22 April 20th, 2009, 7:24 pm Oooh, I love chocolate! *nibbles on cake and takes a sip of her chocolate shake* Yes, this party is very good.
LyraLovegood April 21st, 2009, 4:48 pm
BubblyShell22 April 21st, 2009, 6:07 pm Hey, since this is a party, shouldn't we have games?
Muggle_Magic April 21st, 2009, 8:25 pm Hey, since this is a party, shouldn't we have games?
We were having the Dragon Quidditch game, but now all the players are busy writing their songs for the Through the Trapdoor contest.
We can still have games, though, what do you suggest? We're open to any proposal that sounds like it could be fun and a big number could participate.
We can also dance, wasn't there a conga line forming some time back?
witchsmart April 22nd, 2009, 5:05 am  Back here!
Conga conga con-ga! Conga conga con-ga! Conga conga con-ga!
FleurduJardin April 22nd, 2009, 6:14 am Here, those who have finished their First Challenge, or are not participating, or need a little respite from racking their brains and overcome writer's block, come join the conga line.
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3135/2920686194_83ccc205ca.jpg
BubblyShell22 April 22nd, 2009, 2:34 pm Well, I'm not participating in any of the tasks, so I'll definitely join. As for games, how about Twister?
Muggle_Magic April 22nd, 2009, 10:52 pm Well, I'm not participating in any of the tasks, so I'll definitely join. As for games, how about Twister?
How do you play Twister? Someone explained it in this forum once but I forget... Please refresh my memory. :)
LyraLovegood April 23rd, 2009, 12:36 am Maybe this will jog your memory: http://images.meredith.com/parents/images/2008/02/ss_twister2.jpg
witchsmart April 23rd, 2009, 2:08 am Ah, Twister. I find it much more enjoyable when using condiments and ice cream toppings as dots instead of paper. :p
Den_muggle April 23rd, 2009, 2:12 am I tried to get a Twister game going some time back, but no one wanted to play. :(
Colonel_Fubster April 23rd, 2009, 5:29 am I was always good at Twister. I'll play!
stupid song.....:grumble:
BubblyShell22 April 23rd, 2009, 2:41 pm Oh, I'm definitely gonna play. How you play is simple. Someone spins the wheel and then directs you to put part of your body on that spot. An example would be, "Right foot green." You would then put your right foot on a green dot. It's not that hard. You'll get the hang of it. Okay, who wants to be the wheel spinner?
LyraLovegood April 23rd, 2009, 4:52 pm I've never played before, so I'd rather be an active participant than a caller!
BubblyShell22 April 23rd, 2009, 6:29 pm Hey, that's cool. Any other volunteers for wheel spinner?
witchsmart April 24th, 2009, 3:52 am I'll spin the wheel. I'm not feeling particularly flexible right now. Ready to go?
xhanax315 April 24th, 2009, 3:52 am Why is it now 2.0? :hmm:
witchsmart April 24th, 2009, 4:02 am This is the second version of The Never Ending Party thread. The old one had reached the maximum amount of posts.
xhanax315 April 24th, 2009, 4:12 am Ah....I thought we had already reached a new version. :hmm:
witchsmart April 24th, 2009, 4:26 am Surprisingly no. What with the popularity of this thread last Christmas/New Year's, it's really a wonder that we didn't reach this point sooner.
BubblyShell22 April 24th, 2009, 2:18 pm Yes, I'm ready to play.
ArryGrotter April 24th, 2009, 10:10 pm I have something for everyone to celebrate:
ANZAC DAY!!! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANZAC_Day)
Everyone have some ANZAC biscuits! :D

We need some caramel corn!!
*joins the dancing*
Colonel_Fubster April 25th, 2009, 5:04 am It's been a very long time since I've had ANZAC bikkies! Yum!
Somebody spin so we can get started with Twister!
FleurduJardin April 25th, 2009, 5:06 am I have something for everyone to celebrate:
ANZAC DAY!!! (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ANZAC_Day)
Happy ANZAC Day, Aaron. Though it's the day after for you by now. :)

LyraLovegood April 25th, 2009, 5:47 pm *wonders if there's a random Twister spin generator on the web somewhere*
ETA: I found one. It goes really fassssst!! (http://www.mathematik.uni-bielefeld.de/~sillke/Twister/spinner/)
BubblyShell22 April 27th, 2009, 2:49 pm I've never heard of Anzac day, but happy Anzac day! Now, let's get this Twister game started!
LyraLovegood April 27th, 2009, 5:16 pm *puts left foot on green dot*
That's what the Random Twister Spinner said when I opened it just now, though the legend said it was its third generation.
Next: right hand blue...
FleurduJardin April 27th, 2009, 11:08 pm Surprisingly no. What with the popularity of this thread last Christmas/New Year's, it's really a wonder that we didn't reach this point sooner.
In fact, the Christmas/New Year Party thread was a different thread. It stopped short of 1,500 posts and there was no new version.
This "Never-Ending Party" actually started with the Lunar New Year at the end of January, then morphed into the Valentine's Day Party, with the first Dragon Quidditch Match mixed in. So we changed the name from Lunar New Year Party to Never-Ending Party, the Quidditch players opened their own, separate thread, and that's the end of this longish explanation.
Please go on with the Twister game. Sorry I'm not taking part, my old bones wouldn't be able to stand the stress. But you young' uns are doing fine. :tu:

Ah, I see.
*puts various appendages on the appropriate dots* What's next?
Colonel_Fubster April 28th, 2009, 4:48 am *left foot green, right hand blue*
I'm okay so far, virtual twister is much easier than the real thing....
BubblyShell22 April 28th, 2009, 2:24 pm *puts left foot on green and right hand on blue. Waits for further instructions*
LyraLovegood April 28th, 2009, 6:08 pm We could have Fleur run the spinner, since she's worried about her old bones...
*clicks the virtual random spinner again*
Yellow, it said, but it didn't say which appendage!
Right foot red... right hand blue...
witchsmart April 29th, 2009, 12:50 am *shifts herself accordingly*
Whoops, sorry, Fubs! Didn't mean to hit you on the leg there.
Colonel_Fubster April 29th, 2009, 6:24 am Ouch! Oh, that's okay, Smartie. Have you been eating mints?
*leaves left foot on green puts right foot on red... right hand on blue*
Not too bad....yet....
BubblyShell22 April 29th, 2009, 2:07 pm *follows exact directions* Wow, this is fun!
LyraLovegood April 29th, 2009, 5:08 pm Left hand yellow.
witchsmart April 30th, 2009, 2:37 am Oh geez . . . BubblyShell22 if you could just extend your arm just a bit more . . . thanks.
Colonel_Fubster April 30th, 2009, 6:18 am *puts left hand on yellow*
Oops, sorry 'bout that Smartie....
BubblyShell22 April 30th, 2009, 2:20 pm Oh geez . . . BubblyShell22 if you could just extend your arm just a bit more . . . thanks.
Okay, Smartie, I'll try. *extends arm out and then follows directions*
LyraLovegood April 30th, 2009, 5:23 pm Left foot Green.
Wait.. our left feet are already on green... right hand yellow.
*waits for a left foot move*
Left foot blue!
witchsmart May 1st, 2009, 4:24 am This would be so much easier if I didn't have any bones. :grumble:
Colonel_Fubster May 1st, 2009, 5:21 am Okay, both hands yellow, right foot red, left foot blue......right elbow in ear, left pinkie toe up nose.....
witchsmart May 1st, 2009, 5:22 am Augh! Your own nose, Fubs! Your own nose!
Colonel_Fubster May 1st, 2009, 5:27 am heh, sorry 'bout that.....
FleurduJardin May 1st, 2009, 6:48 am I'll just interrupt the Twister game for a few seconds to wish everyone a Happy May Day! Feliz Primer de Mayo! Premier Mai, Joli Muguet!
It's a tradition in France to give lilies-of-the-valley to family and friends for good luck, so here you are:
http://www.cosforums.com/picture.php?albumid=806&pictureid=8075
Now, go on with the game! You're doing great!
P.S. If you can't see the flowers, let me know. I've had problems with this before. Hope it works OK this time. :)
LyraLovegood May 1st, 2009, 3:02 pm My mom told me the deal on May Day was to hang a basket of wildflowers on somebody's doorknob, ring the doorbell and go hide.
Preferably a basket woven of colored paper strips.
But there are'nt any wildflowers around anymore but dandelions. Everywhere they used to grow has been developed.
Right hand green!
witchsmart May 1st, 2009, 10:23 pm Oh, what lovely flowers, Fleur!
I don't know how much long I can make it . . .
Muggle_Magic May 2nd, 2009, 5:16 am I don't know how much long I can make it . . .
Dontcha worry, Witchie. In less than 3 hours, everyone will be so busy looking at all the contest entries that they'll probably stop playing games for a little while.
Then in a few days we'll have Cinco de Mayo to celebrate. The twister game can go on/resume at any time. :)
witchsmart May 3rd, 2009, 2:52 am *looks around in her twisted position*
So do we have to stay like this until the next move is called (as is typical in this game) or resume these positions at a later date?
Den_muggle May 3rd, 2009, 2:58 am You have to stay like that. Everyone else can rest. :p
witchsmart May 3rd, 2009, 3:06 am :grumble:
LyraLovegood May 3rd, 2009, 3:19 am Why am I the only one who ever checks the Spinner?
Oy.
Right hand RED!
Colonel_Fubster May 3rd, 2009, 4:47 am *falls on her tuckus and crawls away to check the contest* :D
Muggle_Magic May 3rd, 2009, 4:48 am *looks around in her twisted position*
So do we have to stay like this until the next move is called (as is typical in this game) or resume these positions at a later date?
You have to stay like that. Everyone else can rest. :p
I see Denise has more in common with Umbridge than clearing her throat before she begins to speak.
Why am I the only one who ever checks the Spinner?
Most people are busy looking at the Fluffy Song entries.
Oy.
Right hand RED!
Hold that position until the next player makes a call. :elaugh:
LyraLovegood May 3rd, 2009, 4:51 am Did my looking at the Fluffy songs this morning.
Voted and everything.
I just recall saying that I wanted to participate in the game, not sit around spinning the moves.
:grumble:
FleurduJardin May 3rd, 2009, 6:10 pm This was posted on the wrong date, it's been reposted on the next page.
It was wishes for Mothers' Day one week early.
LyraLovegood May 3rd, 2009, 6:37 pm Er... Mother's Day is next Sunday in US.
FleurduJardin May 3rd, 2009, 11:31 pm Er... Mother's Day is next Sunday in US.
Oops! You're right.
That's what happens when 1) you don't have kids yourself; 2) both your mother and your mother-in-law have passed away; and 3) you looked at the wrong Sunday on your calendar. :D
We'll try again next week. Meantime, we have Cinco de Mayo to take care of, and that, I know, is the day after tomorrow.
How goes the Twister game? I haven't followed it much. :)
LyraLovegood May 4th, 2009, 2:50 am We're all kind of frozen in place wishing someone would more frequently spin the spinner...
But the random Twister spin generator I was using before doesn't work anymore. It's demanding software I don't have and am chary of downloading.
witchsmart May 4th, 2009, 4:02 am *from her position on the twister mat* Um, hello? Anyone?
GwenTheAnnoying May 4th, 2009, 9:11 am Hi, everyone.
I bought some cup cakes!

Lady Elven May 4th, 2009, 6:57 pm *spins* Left foot Yellow *spins again* Right hand Green
LyraLovegood May 4th, 2009, 7:20 pm Okay, let's see if I can move my left foot from blue to yellow without knocking witchsmart off balance... I'm straddled now, with lefts on yellow and rights on red... I'm getting used to switching my right hand from green to red and back... as long as no one takes my usual green dot... There!
GwenTheAnnoying May 4th, 2009, 7:31 pm Ohh, that looks like fun! I'll join in the next game. Looks a bit squashy at the moment... :D
PureBloodGirl May 4th, 2009, 9:18 pm Alright, seriously, what are we celebrating now?
LyraLovegood May 4th, 2009, 9:39 pm Right foot BLUE
Right now we're kind of sort of celebrating May, but Cinco de Mayo is tomorrow (today in time zones east of, say, Pakistan) and we're getting ready to throw that party... as soon as I win this Twister game...
*bobbles witchsmart & Muggle_Magic a bit on the way to Right Foot Blue*
witchsmart May 4th, 2009, 11:39 pm *wobbles for a second but catches her balance just in time*
Oi! Anyone wanna throw one of those cinnamon buns my way? My hands are a bit preoccupied at the moment but I think I can catch it in my mouth if you aim well . . .
Colonel_Fubster May 5th, 2009, 5:25 am Well, we could all be Star Wars geeks, and celebrate the 4th of May.
May the Fourth be with you.....
Yeah, I know. But it's an excuse to eat goodies! :D
GwenTheAnnoying May 5th, 2009, 5:29 am Well, we could all be Star Wars geeks, and celebrate the 4th of May.

HAHAHAHA!!!! lol, that's brilliant! :rotfl:
Lady Elven May 5th, 2009, 6:10 am Happy Cinco De Mayo!!!
http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/cinco-de-mayo-intro.jpg
The History:
The holiday commemorates the Mexican army's unlikely defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, under the leadership of Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín.
While outnumbered, the Mexicans defeated a much better-equipped French army that had known no defeat for almost 50 years. However, Cinco de Mayo is not "an obligatory federal holiday" in Mexico, but rather a holiday that can be observed voluntarily.
While Cinco de Mayo has limited significance nationwide in Mexico, the date is observed in the United States and other locations around the world as a celebration of Mexican heritage and pride. However, a common misconception in the United States is that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico's Independence Day, which actually is September 16 (dieciséis de septiembre in Spanish), the most important national patriotic holiday in Mexico.
To get the party started here's some music!

and a little fun, time to take a whack at the first pinata of the day! Who wants to go first?

Mimosa May 5th, 2009, 7:57 am Feliz Cinco de Mayo a todos!
I'll take a whack at the piñata. Tomorrow I'll go looking for appropriate pictures. Too late tonight to go looking. *yawns* - sorry, it's not the company, it's the late hour. ;)
LyraLovegood May 5th, 2009, 5:01 pm It makes more sense for Americans to celbrate Cinco de Mayo, then; it would be rather silly of us to celebrate the day they beat US. Beating the French is something we can live with.
Parties need foods and flowers: http://www.epicurious.com/images/articlesguides/entertaining/partiesevents/cinco_de_mayo_ravago.jpg

witchsmart May 6th, 2009, 1:12 am *crashes down onto the floor* Yeouch! Ohh, that's going to hurt in the morning. I give up, I can't hold that position any longer. *hobbles over to the churros* Happy Cinco de Mayo everyone!
LyraLovegood May 6th, 2009, 2:53 am So that leaves bubbles & M-M on the Twister mat with me, right?
Left Hand Red!
Oy, now I am twisted! Going from straddle to twisted must be why they call this game Twister, right?
*is conveniently placed to give M_M an elbow nudge...*
Muggle_Magic May 6th, 2009, 3:32 am *is conveniently placed to give M_M an elbow nudge...*
Ouch! That was a sharp elbow!!! :grumble:
*Leaves the game to go stuff himself on churros and take a swing at the pinata*
Happy Cinco de Mayo!!

Probably to let me have first go. Thanks, Lady Elven!
FleurduJardin May 7th, 2009, 9:21 pm Whenever the results of the first challenge in the contest are revealed, we can have a celebration party here. Whoever wins.
And then, this coming Sunday, we'll have Mothers' Day in the US, for which I posted one week early last Sunday.
Mimosa May 9th, 2009, 10:13 pm Are we going to do something for Mothers' Day tomorrow or are we waiting for the contest results to celebrate?
I'd go with Mothers' Day, it will take the Mods some time to post the list of winners.
GwenTheAnnoying May 10th, 2009, 3:59 am Here are some flowers for all of the mothers out there
http://www.awesomeflowers.co.uk/images/perfect-pinks.jpg

FleurduJardin May 10th, 2009, 4:51 am Just coming in briefly to wish A Happy Mothers' Day to those in the US and other countries which celebrate it today. (I know it's later in France, some time in June). Have a happy, loving day with your families!

And for the "mother hens" among us -

I posted this a week early last Sunday (a senior moment! ), I'm reposting on the right date. Or almost the right date, there's 10 minutes to go to Sunday the 10th of May. :)
Morning_Star May 10th, 2009, 8:06 pm I just made rislapper (I don't know what it is in English, rice patches, perhaps?), mini pancakes with left-over rice from dinner in them. The plate magically refills itselves, so help yourself! :D

Here in Norway Mother's Day is the second Sunday in February, but Happy Mother's Day to those who celebrate it today! :D
FleurduJardin May 10th, 2009, 8:10 pm Looks delicious, Morning_Star, thank you!
Yes, Mothers' Day is celebrated on different dates according to the country. But it's celebrated in the USA today, and since I'm living here, here's to all mothers everywhere and their families:

FleurduJardin May 11th, 2009, 10:09 pm Yays! Fabulous, Fleur!;
Thanks!
*would cheerfully sing, if she had a mic*You don't need a mic. Use the Sonorus Charm. You're a witch, aren't you??? Honestly!
LyraLovegood May 11th, 2009, 10:53 pm Well, yes, but the charm seems to have no effect on this wretched laptop.
*sings her "through the trapdoor" contest song anyway*

Can you please sing the Vietnamese Lullaby (entry #11) please? That was Mimosa's entry. Try to sing it in Vietnamese too.
LyraLovegood May 13th, 2009, 6:49 pm Oh, dear, I'm afraid that was one of the ones I couldn't wrap my brain around... I'm far too much a Westerner! It's a beautiful song, just beyond my abilities.
Would it be okay if I sing Byssan Lull instead? It's also very beautiful I think!

Not to worry, Lyra, Rob was just teasing you. Even he can't sing it in Vietnamese!

Fluffy big
I need you to sleep
I want to come through the trapdoor
Fluffy big
I need you to sleep
I want to come through the trapdoor
So said the Professor
Called stuttering Quirrel
His intentions were bad and evil.
Fluffy beast
You shall go to sleep
I’m going down through the trapdoor
Fluffy beast
You shall go to sleep
I’m going down through the trapdoor
In the back of Quirrel’s head
Was evil Voldemort
The Stone he was out to get.

Asteria_Malfoy May 13th, 2009, 11:39 pm Is this where one comes to relax, make friends and have good food instead of biting one's nails while waiting for the contest results to be posted?
I just sent in my entry for Challenge 2 and am in need of comfort and sustenance. :scared:
GwenTheAnnoying May 14th, 2009, 12:20 am We have food, yes, but there isn't much relaxing going on. After all, it is a party. :D
Feel free to partake in the party games to keep your mind off your nervousness though.
witchsmart May 14th, 2009, 2:39 am Wonderful singing, Lyra!
Morning_Star May 14th, 2009, 4:26 pm Didn't know my song was that popular. :D I just wrote it a few weeks ago, and it's already being sung in parties! ;)
LyraLovegood May 14th, 2009, 5:16 pm I am now officially in love with Byssan Lull, thanks to your beautiful contest entry.
Asteria, the Hogwarts Common Room (in the Sorting Hat) is also a great place to make friends, and is more relaxing (at least when Dags isn't releasing Ashwinders and playing experimental potions).

Morning_Star May 21st, 2009, 3:09 pm Morning_Star - nice signature image! :)
Thanks! :) It's Eärendil's ship, made by Ted Nasmith. It's a quite fitting signature picture for me, since I love the sea, and in Tolkien's Middle Earth, Eärendil is the great seafarer who carried the morning star across the sky. I learned this after I used the pic, I only took it because of the LotR connection and the sea. But it's cool anyway. :D
LyraLovegood May 21st, 2009, 5:40 pm *also likes Morning Star's siggy pic*
*also loves the Bothering Snape siggy pic*
Morning Star, are you in the LotR social group here on this board? Are you a member at any (English language) Tolkien boards?
Morning_Star May 21st, 2009, 9:02 pm I think I am a member of the LotR social group... *goes to check* Ah, yes, "Lord of the Rings forever". :D But I'm not a member of any Tolkien boards yet, though perhaps I should be, seing as I'm one of his greatest fans in my city. :D My msn picture is also a LotR pic (though I'm going to change it today, since it's Towel Day on Monday [Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy thing]), but when that's over, it's all LotR again. And I've read LotR in three different languages, have four different editions of The Hobbit, three of The Return of the King and The Two Towers, two of The Fellowship of the Ring, one of -- well, I'll stop there, but you can understand I'm a huge fan. :D

Morning_Star May 21st, 2009, 9:28 pm I don't own The Silmarillion, though. :grumble: I hope to buy it during 2009! :D
LyraLovegood May 21st, 2009, 10:41 pm *has three copies of the Silmarillion, one hardback, one falling apart Ballantine paperback, and one other*
*looked for Tolkien books at the used bookstore today, but they only had the movie editions of LotR*
*bought Goblet of Fire instead*
Yay, now I'm only missing books six and seven from my HP Paperback set! And DH hasn't even been printed in pb, afaik!
*parties*
Muggle_Magic May 21st, 2009, 11:59 pm I don't own The Silmarillion, though. :grumble: I hope to buy it during 2009! :D
I have the Silmarillion, tried to read it, it bored me half-way to death. But another LotR fan in here says I should re-read it, since she enjoyed it a lot. You can't account for tastes.
I read The Hobbit a couple of times, only in English, but I read the LotR trilogy in English and French numerous times, saw several versions of movies (the animated one with Glen Yarborough singing, and the Peter Jackson superb version) You could say I'm a fan too, though I have a bone to pick with Peter Jackson about some of the changes he made.
But we're going off-topic. Party time! I'll be back later with some more drinks, meseems we're running out of champagne in here. We can't have that.

Well, some don't like LotR because it's to difficult to read, and some LotR fans finds The Silmarillion just as impossible. It took me an age, but for me, a person who wants to learn everything she can about the LotR world, it was almost as though I was reading a (interesting) history book (which is also what Tolkien intended his readers to feel). Some like it, some don't, we just have to live with that. :)
But, as you say, this is off-topic. It's party time! And a party needs a cake! :D

Den_muggle May 22nd, 2009, 11:49 pm No offense, MS, but that cake looks more like an entry for the 2nd challenge! Not sure what that stuff in the center is, but as a whole it reminds me a bit of a floral version of the Sarlac (I think :hmm: that thing Jabba was trying to feed them all to in the desert). I think I'll pass on it, thanks anyway.
Green_Arrow May 22nd, 2009, 11:56 pm Moving on from The Silmarillion, have you read The Sillymarillion?
Spoofs are awesome! :D
GwenTheAnnoying May 23rd, 2009, 4:05 am The stuff in the middle is red and green jello. That cake looks tasty, the white icing looks like white chocolate!
*grabs a slice*
witchsmart May 23rd, 2009, 4:28 am Not so hungry now, maybe some more later. *plucks a sugar-flower from the cake*
Colonel_Fubster May 23rd, 2009, 5:15 am Ooogh, jello on cake? :err:
To go with the LotR conversation: Minas Tirith, as a cake!

Spoofs are awesome! :D
No, never even heard of it, but sounds awesome. Is it available on Amazon?
Denise, concentrating on your plant must have blurred your vision (or got your mind focussed too much on plants.) That is undoubtedly a cake that MS posted. Looks yummy too. *grabs a slice, chomp, chomp*
The Minas Tirith cake is awesome. :tu: - I'd hate to destroy part of that work of art to eat it, though.

OK, but I won't eat Frodo, Sam or Gandalf.
Gwen, would you mind putting your large pic of Minas Tirith inside expansion tags, please? It's too big and takes forever to load. What you do is put [*expand=Minas Tirith] then the link to the pic then [*/expand], without the stars. Thank you. :)
You are right, the details are amazing. Truly a work of art.
LyraLovegood May 23rd, 2009, 5:46 pm It is absolutely incredible! That must have taken hours, if not days, to create.
Aw, you guys renewed the partying while I wasn't here! I must be the NEP wetblanket, the party works better when I'm away! :upset:
j/k, I'm not that bad a wormeater.
Too lazy to go try to find a cake to post, though.
Lady Elven May 23rd, 2009, 6:11 pm Sorry I haven' t been around much but I come bearing Cake!
I love this show on Food Network called Ace of Cakes, they make some of the coolest cakes like this one:

or this one they made for the Lost 100th episode.

ITS HOGWARTS!!!!! SCREEEE! I want this soooo bad!
Lady Elven May 24th, 2009, 4:19 am Yeah Charm City made that one too for the Hollywood premiere of I think OotP.
Morning_Star May 24th, 2009, 11:15 am No offense, MS, but that cake looks more like an entry for the 2nd challenge! Not sure what that stuff in the center is, but as a whole it reminds me a bit of a floral version of the Sarlac (I think :hmm: that thing Jabba was trying to feed them all to in the desert). Flower cake, because we have a flower contest going on! :D And all those other yummy cakes... They look awesomely delicious... Or deliciously awesome...
GwenTheAnnoying May 24th, 2009, 2:46 pm Yeah Charm City made that one too for the Hollywood premiere of I think OotP.
Well, they should make one for me!!!
LyraLovegood May 24th, 2009, 3:51 pm I've always thought that cake was absolutely fabulous.
Somebody should crop it and resize it for a siggy pic!
Muggle_Magic May 24th, 2009, 11:31 pm That's amazing, too, though I think it also could use some [expand] taggage!
I agree. If you could do that, Witchie? It would make it easier for those of us who have slower Internet connections.
Gwen, thanks for putting on the expand tabs on the Minas Tirith cake. :)
Awesome cakes, everyone! One would not dare touch such work of art an eat part of it. What about some simple cakes that we could happily munch on while admiring the more spectacular offerings? ;)
This one, for example, is bourbon chocolate cake with praline that sounds yummy, and I wouldn't have any qualms digging into it.

WanderingPrince May 25th, 2009, 2:45 am Sorry about that. Didn't realize how big it was. Should be fixed now. :)
It is fixed and the cake looks grreat. I trust we can take Harry off and put him in a safe place before we cut that cake and eat it? Washing it down with a few butterbeers?
Isn't it a bit early for Harry's birthday though? :hmm:
Never mind, we can celebrate Harry's birthday any day of the year. :agree:

I would. I've never eaten pralines, but as I've had allergic reaction to every other nut I've ever bitten, I've kind of sworn off nuts of all kinds. For life.
 Except this kind, of course. I'd be in big trouble if I were allergic to my own nutty self.
Den_muggle May 25th, 2009, 6:39 pm That would be a problem.
Muggle_Magic May 25th, 2009, 7:51 pm On this Memorial Day, let's put the party on hold for just a few moments to read Rupert Brooks' "In Flanders Fields" and the Message to the Fallen carved at Arlington Cemetery.
Memorial Day (http://www.avenueviet.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2085)
After one minute of silence, let the party resume! :)
LyraLovegood May 25th, 2009, 9:31 pm *breaks out the flute*

FleurduJardin May 25th, 2009, 11:58 pm I made this video a couple of months ago, from a folk song that Pete Seeger wrote based on an Ukrainian folk song (there's also a version in German, you'll find them in the Translators & Linguists social group). Pete Seeger wrote it as an anti-war song, but I see it more as a song on the unending circle of life, war and death being part of it. In particular I dedicate the last verses in English and especially in French (the French version is particularly poignant) to those who fell at war to protect all of us.
0kDxZqzPnmE
The verses are basically the same in all languages, but it's particularly short, sharp and effective in French. It goes:
What happened to the flowers?
Girls picked them, made bouquets out of them
What happened to the girls?
They gave their bouquets
To the guys they met
What happened to the guys?
To war they went, at war they fell
What happened to the flowers?
On the graves new flowers grew
Others girls will pick them
Will we learn one day?
Will we learn ever?
All right. Now we can go watch the parades (I love military parades, don't you?), attend the concerts, and come back here to party. :)
Note: I made a special point to include flags of as many countries as I could find, as well as people from as many backgrounds as I could, since this is a really universal song, but obviously I couldn't get them all in.
FlamingFawkes May 26th, 2009, 9:03 am I hope everybody had a good Memorial Day! I myself had quite of few relatives(grandfather, grandfather's brothers) that were involved in World War II. My grandfather was in the navy, one of his brothers was in the air force, I believe, and another was a lieutenant that was captured and put into a concentration camp(thankfully, he survived it). I think that at least of his brothers was buried in Arlington Cemetery.
Moving on to today, I have a cast part that I need to get ready for! I am so excited for it! We are planning fun games, a bonfire, and a great dinner!
LyraLovegood May 26th, 2009, 5:55 pm Sounds like an awesome party, FlFawkes! If there's any foods left afters, please bring some for this party, to revive it, like!
FleurduJardin May 26th, 2009, 7:46 pm Good idea, Lyra! Everyone's who put in an entry in the second contest are busy biting their nails and waiting for the entries to be posted. Anything has to be better-tasting than fingernails!! So, please, bring on the good stuff.
Meanwhile, have a little Summer Wine. (I made this video too). The strawberries and cherries (and the honey in the French version) come in as a bonus. They all have to taste better than anxiety-soaked nails.

GwenTheAnnoying May 26th, 2009, 9:05 pm raspberry and white chocolate muffins anyone?
http://www.aga-web.co.uk/SiteImages/Site_101/BigMedia/WhiteChocolateRasberryMuffins.jpg
FlamingFawkes May 26th, 2009, 9:12 pm Sounds delicioius! Thanks! I'll take one.
I'd love to bring the leftover food here! But I am not sure how to do so.
LyraLovegood May 26th, 2009, 9:26 pm I'm actually pretty relaxed about my entry this time. For the first challenge, I was afraid my entry would be the worst of the bunch. Turned out it was in the top third, so I'm just going with the assumption that my second challenge entry will be somewhere in the middle. I'm perfectly satisfied with that.
FlFawkes, all you need to do is google images of food like what you had at your rl party, copy the image to a hosting site like photobucket (or download it on your hard drive and upload it to CoS image hosting), then paste in in here using the [img] tags.
I hope you do, too; the foods and beverages posted here lately are not quite to my tastes, as I tend to be a fairly finicky teetotallar. No worries to the people who brought stuff, though; I know I'm hard to please. ;)
witchsmart May 27th, 2009, 2:18 am *Is mad that she put off doing her Challenge entry and now there's no more time left* :grumble:
LyraLovegood May 27th, 2009, 3:51 am There's still time! Two hours and ten minutes, to be exact!
Maybe not time to do something fabulous, but surely you can do something that will get a few points for Gryffindor. Go for it!
I've been frantically trying to resize my image, which was over 100 Kb even though it was 500x500 pixels. Stupid photobucket kept altering the resolution when I uploaded it. :grumble:
Mimosa May 27th, 2009, 7:22 am Hope you hurried up and put in your entry in time, Witchsmart. :)
I wandered in here because I was told there was cakes to be had. I see there are indeed, plenty, of all sorts. Aah, decisions, decisions. Where shall I begin? The castles and hobbit stuff are too good to eat. I'll just take a muffin for the moment.
Going to bed now (munch, munch quickly before brushing teeth). Tomorrow we'll finally see all those deadly plants that grew out of our members' fertile minds!!
LyraLovegood May 27th, 2009, 7:30 pm Omigosh, Hogwarts students are brilliant. Everyone who entered the contest obviously got E's and O's in their Herbology O.W.L.!
