I decided to read this manga after watching the Gunslinger Girl anime (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=112633), which is based on the books.
So far, there are ten volumes of this manga released with an additional two chapters that have not been bound into a volume. Only six have made it to an English release by ADV manga. It is still ongoing.
The basic premise follows pairs of fratello (Italian for brother), which is made up of one man and a young girl - a cyborg and her handler. The girls all had something happen in their lives which made them candidates for the "Social Welfare Agency" to perform operations on their bodies, essentially giving them new bodies that are equipped to kill.
Anyhow, I just finished the sixth volume of this manga and would love to be able to discuss it with anyone else who has read it. :D I figure if anyone has read beyond what is available in English, we could use spoiler tags? They look like this:
