Set during the next generation time era, with a huge twist, and of course romance. James Sirius Potter/OC and other pairings.
Disclaimer- I do not own Harry Potter or any of the characters, everything belongs to the lovely J.K Rowling.

Prologue

I was born to serve the magical world, to keep the order, to bring peace, even knowledge. My life was never mine to live, but instead to give. I could never remember being given a definite choice; I was raised to do one thing and one thing only, to protect. My parents named me Alena Angelie Antoine. Alena meaning rock and Angelie meaning angel. I did not know the purpose of everything that my parents taught me until later on in life. As long as I could remember they treated me as if I would break any moment; I was hardly ever allowed to play with other children, current events were kept from me, when I turned eleven I was not allowed to go Hogwarts. However, I was trained to do very powerful, advanced magic, magic that I thought was beyond me. I did not understand; did a thirteen year old girl really need to know how to kill?

I was seventeen when a man named Dumbledore sought out my family; fourteen years ago, my parents had made a promise. That night everything fell into place, my future became clear. I was told of how deeply my parents supported Dumbledore and an organization called the Order of Phoenix, how hard they worked for the fall of a dark wizard Voldemort. I was told of a young boy, much like me, a boy named Harry Potter. I was told that he was the boy who lived, the boy who defeated Voldemort, but not forever.

A promise. Fourteen years ago, when Voldemort fell, Dumbledore was sure that he would return, he made arrangements. My parents were more than willing to insure that they would help him. I was only two at the time, but my parents and this man still made plans to raise me so that one day I would be able to help Harry Potter.

"Alena, I came here tonight to ask something of you," said Dumbledore.

I was afraid that night, afraid of what would be asked of me. In a mere three hours I learned that Voldemort was back, back in an actual body, and that Harry Potter fought and escaped him once again. Harry Potter, who was only fourteen at the time. I waited patiently to hear that I would have to risk my life, that I would have to seek out this dark wizard, but I was wrong.

My mission was very different from anything that I could have expected. I was not going to kill Voldemort, no. I was going to give up my current life. I was going to travel thirty nine years into the future. I was going to find out anything that I could about the fates of Harry Potter and Voldemort, then, when Dumbledore reversed the spell, I would report back.

I couldn't say no, I couldn't disappoint my parents. I was to keep my same identity and name, seeing as no one apart from my parents and Dumbledore knew that I existed. I would be going to Hogwarts, to complete my seventh year. There, I would question students, listen to professors, and read books until I was aware of how Harry ended Voldemort. Although I didn't have faith that Harry Potter could kill Voldemort once and for all, Dumbledore was clearly sure that it happened, and said that he just needed to make sure. I had no idea of what he had to "make sure" of, but I knew that I needed to get as much details about what Harry had to do.

The week after Dumbledore's visit was a somber one. My parents accepted that shortly, I would be gone. No one could tell me when I was allowed to come back. This was a timeless task. One that could take a month or years. The complexity of a time traveling spell was nothing like magic that I had seen before; the risk of remaining in a different time period was high, although Dumbledore promised me that it would be impossible to remain forever. He also told me that in case of his death, the spell would almost always be automatically reversed.

Personally, I found the plan flawed. How could I fit into a world that was new when I never even had a chance to fit into the one that I lived in? I was sure that someone would find me out. I worried that in the future Voldemort would be stronger than ever, that people would be in despair.

My parents made me swear that I wouldn't build strong relationships or friendships. They told me that it would be downright mad to get close to anyone.

"Think about it Alena, you'll make friends and then what? You will suddenly disappear, everyone will look into what happened to you, find out nothing, you will just hurt people."

Once again, I was going to be forced to be alone, completely alone.

I would love any suggestions or comments! Feedback! (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=122454)

Everything was ready, preparations were made, the date of my "departure" set. I was to leave tomorrow, September 1st. Quietly, I sat on my warm bed, staring out of my room window. All that could be seen was vast darkness. I could not sleep. Massive butterflies rested in my stomach, refusing to leave. I was terrified but at the same time almost excited. I was finally going to be with people my own age, not that that mattered much. I had never had real friends, never had an opportunity. Even now, I would be communicating with people who were not yet alive in my world. Yesterday I had calculated the real age difference between me and the seventh years that I would be going to Hogwarts with. In my present, I would be fifty six by the time that anyone who I would meet would be in their seventh year.

Deciding that trying to fall asleep was pointless, I got up and walked over to my dresser. Looking in a mirror, I saw a young, scared girl, with long light brown hair, and green eyes. My face was pale, and I noticed that I now had large bags under my eyes. Shaking my head, I sat down in a stiff chair and tried to relax. I tried to tell myself that things would fall into place, but a normal life was hard to imagine.

I thought of my parents and how tough things were going to be for them, but at least they had each other. Last evening, my mother had burst into tears, grabbing me and pulling me into a close hug. I comforted her, telling her that I would be fine, trying to convince myself at the same time.

"Alena, Alena wake up!"

I opened my eyes and raised my head, looking into my mother's soft brown eyes. I had fallen asleep after all.

"Dumbledore is here, downstairs," piped my mother, glancing nervously at the large trunk that rested at the foot of my bed.

"Already?" I asked as a burning sensation spread through my throat.

"Well, he is promptly on time. Actually you overslept but you looked so tired that I just couldn't wake you up."

"I'll get dressed quickly mom, don't worry," I whispered.

I heard the door to my room close, and knew that I was alone. I stumbled around, gathering last minute things, shoving them in the already full trunk. I didn't have any of the school books that I would need, seeing as we had no idea of which ones were required. I was to say that I was raised and home schooled by my grandmother, who recently died. I was to say that I was an orphan, that I couldn't afford to buy any supplies. Dumbledore made documents to support the fact that I was a witch, that I was meant to be a student.

I pulled a light green dress over my head, and pinned back my hair. Dumbledore had said that students only changed into their dress robes on the Hogwarts Express. Satisfied with that fact that I actually looked presentable, I dragged my trunk down the stairs and walked into the kitchen. Teary goodbyes were said, I was passed back and forth between my parents, who gave me long hugs and whispered words of support.

The rest was a blur. I stood in the middle of the kitchen floor, holding my trunk, looking around the room. I felt strange as Dumbledore walked around in circles, muttering things that I could not understand. At first I thought that the spell wasn't working; for a full ten minutes I did not feel a thing. Then it happened.

The room was fading; getting lighter and lighter. I saw my parents wave, as my mom leaned against my dad, holding on to his arm. The kitchen faded until I was surrounded by a white light, until everything was just white light. It was blinding, much like the sun, and I shielded my eyes with the back of my hand. I felt goose bumps spread across my body, as the fear of being stuck in between time shook me.

Then, slowly, the white light grew less prominent, until I could make out features of a different setting. There was a brick wall, a train, faces. It took a couple of minutes but soon I found myself standing in the middle of a rushing crowd. People pushed and shoved past me, running towards their destinations. Dumbledore had promised me that I would appear at a train station, he did not lie.

I searched for platform 9 and 3/4, trying to pick out other kids who looked like they would be going to Hogwarts. Luckily, I knew what to look for; I was told that a wall between platforms 9 and 10 would lead me to the Hogwarts Express. I found the correct location quickly. Glancing around at muggles, I saw that they paid me no attention. Taking a deep breath, I looked straight at my target, and walked towards the wall.

Immediately, I knew that I was now at a different train station. There were no more muggles; only witches and wizards dressed in all sorts of robes. Everyone was speaking in loud, lively voices. I tried to analyze their tones; did they sound like they were going through hard times? Were any of them telling stories of a current war? However, every family that I passed was discussing the same subject, Hogwarts.

"I want to be in Ravenclaw! You and daddy were both in Ravenclaw!"

I stared at a small girl, who was most likely eleven. She was stomping her foot, and looking at an older woman, who was smiling. I realized that they had to be talking about the different houses at Hogwarts, supposedly there were four. I did not know much about any of them, but my parents told me that each one had great qualities.

I looked at my watch and saw that it was almost eleven, time has definitely flown. There was so much to take in, I was overwhelmed. But, pulling myself together, I boarded the Hogwarts Express and tried to find an empty compartment. My hopes for having some time to think were crushed however, when I saw that every compartment was already full. Anxiety washed over me as the fact that I would have to sit with other people hit me. Just walk into the next possible compartment, I told myself, taking small steps towards the first door.

Somehow, I gathered enough courage to pull open the door and saw that three boys were sitting together, laughing. Two looked about the same age as me, the third however, looked very young. All three of them quickly turned and looked at me, two of them with surprised expressions.

"May I sit here?" I asked, blushing.

"Sure," replied one of the older boys, who had dark brown hair, and hazel eyes. "My name if James. This is my friend Ben, and that is my younger brother Albus," he added.

Albus. I was sure that Dumbledore's first name was Albus. Was this a coincidence?

"Nice to meet you," I replied, thinking that this James was very handsome, but pushing the thought away.

"Are you new to Hogwarts? I have never seen you, and you don't look like a first year," said Ben.

"I'm new, I used to be home schooled by my grandmother, but I am going to finish my last year at Hogwarts."

"Brilliant! What house do you want to be sorted into? Me and Ben are both in Gryffindor, Albus here is just starting his first year so he's going to be sorted tonight," said James, who looked very pleased and happy.

"I don't really know much about the houses," I replied, hoping that I wouldn't look too stupid. After all, this sort of knowledge was obvious to anyone who lived in Britain. Quickly, I tried thinking of a good excuse for my lack of information. "My grandmother was home schooled also, so she wasn't able to tell me much about Hogwarts. My name is Alena by the way, Alena Antoine."

"Nice to meet you Alena. Let your education begin. There are four houses: Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Hufflepuff, and Slytherin," started James. "Gryffindor is my personal favorite for many reasons. To be in Gryffindor, you must be brave and courageous; a gentlemen."

"Ravenclaws are the brains, Slytherins are known for meddling in dark magic, Hufflepuffs are everything in between," added Ben.

"Dad said that not all Slytherins are horrible, he said that he knew a very brave men who was in Slytherin," injected Albus.

"Al is right. It has been quite some time since a Slytherin was involved in something serious. Houses get along much better now, my parents told me that before there was a lot of rivalry," agreed Ben.

"Well all the rivalry happened before the school was rebuilt, things had to change didn't they? I mean after all that happened, Slytherins had to make a new reputation, and fast," speculated James.

I carefully listened to the boys, analyzing their every word, trying to remember every fact that they told me. Hogwarts was rebuilt, why? I was about to ask them, when I realized that Hogwarts being rebuilt would have made headlines; I was supposed to know. "After all that happened." What did James mean? Slytherins had a terrible reputation, had Voldemort been in Slytherin? Dumbledore had never told me.

"So what do you think?"

I looked up just in time to see James looking at me, waiting for a response.

"I think that I would still rather not be in Slytherin," I said, hoping that I wouldn't offend any of the three.

"I knew it! I absolutely knew it! Dad was pulling my leg when he said that him and mom would still be proud of me if I was sorted into Slytherin!" muttered Albus, looking upset and angry.

"Oh come off it, they would love you anyway," smiled James.

"That is not what you said earlier," argued Albus.

As the two brothers fought, my mind wondered off, and I suddenly felt very tired. For the first time ever, I felt like I belonged to something. I was accepted by strangers, I was not a freak. I thought of my parents and what they were doing right now, I hoped that they were thinking of me. But most of all, I thought of Harry Potter. Wherever he was, I wanted for him to know that whatever happened between his time and now, people were happy. Neither of the boys had mentioned a war, so once again, Dumbledore had to have been right; Voldemort was dead. Lost in my own thoughts, I leaned against the window and dozed off. I don't know how long I slept, but after what felt like minutes I was awoken by a loud slam.

"Hi guys, mind if I join?"

A small girl, with long, red, brownish hair stood in the doorway. She looked nervous and eager; first year.

"Sure Rose, sit down, relax," replied James, directing the girl to the open spot next to me. "Alena, this is my cousin Rose. Rose, this is Alena, she is new to Hogwarts."

"Hello," said Rose, stretching out her small hand to me.

"Hi," I said, extending my hand and smiling. "Are you looking forward to getting sorted?"

"Of course, I read all about the process in Hogwarts: A History. Did you know that the sorting hat used to belong to Godric Gryffindor? But anyway, personally, I think that Ravenclaw fits me the best," replied Rose, looking proud of herself.

"I'm telling you Rose, you will regret not being in Gryffindor," joked Ben. Clearly all of the kids knew each other well enough to have a comfortable friendship.

"Just because my parents were in Gryffindor, does not mean that I belong there," said Rose, sticking up for herself.

"Well Aunt Hermione could of definitely pulled off the whole Ravenclaw business," replied James. "Rose's mom, Hermione, is brilliant," added James looking at me.

"Why wasn't she in Ravenclaw?" I asked.

"Because she is very brave at heart. I'm sure that you have heard of her," said Rose.

"Now Rose, don't brag too much, or you will befriend little Scorpius," teased James. However, being able to read people, I noticed that he looked embarrassed and eager to change the subject.

Feeling a bit left out, and still sleepy, I tried to concentrate on staying awake. Hermione. I did not know a Hermione, nor did I know anything about who she was. However, maybe I was just thinking too much into this whole deal. Rose could of meant anything. For all I knew, Hermione was a famous seeker, a curse breaker, I did not know. What I did know was the fact that I needed to go to the Hogwarts library, and quick. Would the school hold records of past students? Certainly there had to be information on why it was rebuilt.

Minutes turned into hours, and soon Rose and Ben were both sound asleep. Albus had left to change into his robes, something that I had done thirty minutes ago after realizing that Rose was already dressed. I felt myself getting hot and knew that my palms were sweating; I was "alone" with James. Never before having talked to a boy one on one, I felt very shy and awkward, praying for Albus to come back.

"So why were you home schooled if you don't mind me asking? It's very rare for wizarding families in Britain to not go to Hogwarts," asked James.

"My parents died when I was very young, I suppose that my grandmother didn't want to be alone," I lied, trying to sound casual.

"I am very sorry, that must of been hard. My dad's parents died when he was one," said James, obviously not noticing how shaken up I was.

"I'm sorry," I said, feeling horrible for pretending that I had no family.

"Thank you, but at least he got to grow up in a big family. Aunt Hermione's husband, Uncle Ron, was my dad's best friend. My dad got to stay with his family most of the holidays, and trust me, the Weasley's have a huge family. All great people though."

"That's wonderful, that sounds really nice," I said, actually meaning what I was saying this time. I didn't have to lie about other families, just mine.

The rest of the journey, I spent watching James and Albus play wizard's chess. Albus, who seemed so unsure of himself earlier, was actually winning.

"I'm letting him win," muttered James, rubbing his head.

As nightfall fell, Rose stirred, sat up and looked out from the window.

"We must be nearly there now," she said.

"Finally, I am starving!" slurred Ben. "I can't wait for the feast. If only my mother knew how to cook properly."

As if on cue, my stomach growled, and everyone burst out laughing. Ten minutes later, the Hogwarts Express came to a full stop, and eager students rushed out from every compartment. Terrified of being crushed and or possibly stepped on, I stayed back with James and Ben.

"You should probably go with the first years," suggested James. "Professor Hagrid will meet the whole lot of them, and take them up to the school."

"What does everyone else do?" I asked, not wanting to be separated from the only people my age.

"We take carriages, but you have to be sorted," answered Ben.

Hesitant, but knowing that I had no choice, I said goodbye to James and Ben, and made my way towards a very large man who was supposed to be Professor Hagrid. Picking out the back of Rose's head from the crowd, I noticed that she was standing with Albus, whispering something into his ear and pointing towards a lake.

It didn't take long for me to find out what Rose was talking about. Before I knew it, first years were being loaded into tiny boats. I followed, eying the lake with suspicious. The water was certainly pitch black, unknown creatures lurking in the depths. Stepping into a small boat myself, I sat down next to a small girl, who looked like she was about to puke.

"It will be okay," I said, wanting to sound like I had some control over the situation. "The lake just looks scary."

But my worries were unconfirmed. As we moved along, the smooth surface of the lake stayed calm, and I began enjoying the beautiful view. Having seen only one picture of Hogwarts, before it was rebuilt, I expected to find the castle much more modern, but was pleasantly surprised when I saw that the school had retained its traditional architecture.

For anyone reading, here is a short update.

As soon as we reached the shore, I jumped out and made my way to the front. I was freezing; the cool air had caused for me to shiver until all that I could think about was a warm room. Gathering everyone, Hagrid walked over to two large oak doors. As soon as he placed his foot on the top step, the doors creaked open, revealing a very old woman, with pinned up hair, and glasses.

"Welcome to Hogwarts. As many of you know, I am Professor McGonagall, the headmistress here at Hogwarts. The start of the term feast will begin shortly, however, before you take your seats in the Great Hall, you will be sorted into your houses. Now, will everyone follow me this way," said Professor McGonagall, leading the way towards an ark that opened up to a large room.

The room, which I guessed to be the Great Hall, held many small wooden tables, some pushed together, and one large table at the front where professors sat, smiling down at us. On the walls, hung banners that represented each house, as well as one large banner with all four houses and the name Hogwarts written across it. Scanning the hall, I found James and Ben, sitting with a group of people that I did not meet.

"Listen up first years. When I call out your name, you will come sit down on this stool," spoke Professor McGonagall, pointing to a four legged, tall stool that was placed in the middle of the room. "I will then place the Sorting Hat on your head, until it calls out the house that it finds the best for you. After you have been sorted, you are free to sit at any of the tables. Let's begin. Alena Antoine."

As everyone turned to stare at me, I made my way across the hall, trying to avoid eye contact. Sitting down, I looked down in my lap and waited.

"Strange, very strange."

Jumping up, I realized that the Sorting Hat was actually speaking. Blushing due to my outburst, I now held still.

"You have made some big sacrifices in your life, clear qualities of a Gryffindor. Yet you have brains, ambition."

Gryffindor. Gryffindor. Gryffindor. I prayed, crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

AnneAnne

"As you wish," said the hat. "Gryffindor!"

Relief washed over me as I smiled and stood up. Students clapped and cheered, supporting their new fellow classmate.

"Alena!"

Looking to the right, I saw that James was waving me over, making me a spot right by him. Remembering my mother's warning, I thought about sitting by myself, yet something pulled me across the room and I soon landed down on a wide bench.

"Congratulations!" whispered Ben, beaming down at me.

James too, gave me a warm smile, and a pat on the back. The rest of the sorting process flew by, seeing as my nerves had calmed down. Albus was sorted into Gryffindor, and Rose into Ravenclaw. I clapped loudly for both, knowing how happy they must feel. Even James, who had told Rose that Gryffindor was better, whistled and applauded as she made her way to a table across the room and joined another small looking girl.

"To all new students, welcome to your new home, to returning students, welcome back. I am pleased to have all of you here tonight. Older students, I ask that you make it your responsibility to show first years around. But for now however, let the feast begin," declared Professor McGonagall.

As she finished speaking, food appeared from thin air, and covered every inch of the table. Amazed, I looked at James, who laughed and poured himself some pumpkin juice.

"You will find tons of incredible things in Hogwarts, though not all of them known," said James.

"At least to those who are incapable of noticing things. James and I found this room two years ago, that appears only at midnight. Inside, there is a memorial to everyone who died thirty six years ago," whispered Ben.

"It's brilliant, my cousin Teddy's parents names are there. And the best part is that I don't think that the professors or students built the room," explained James.

Thirty six years ago. I counted back in time, Harry Potter would be in his seventh year at Hogwarts when this battle would take place. How many people had lost their lives? Did Harry? I nodded and smiled, hoping that James and Ben didn't expect for me to reply.

"How rude of us, we never introduced you to everyone!" screamed James, apparently taking my lack of words as a sign of me being offended. "Alena, this is Aurora, she is in Gryffindor, and that is Tristen, he is in Ravenclaw. Guys, this is Elena."

"Hi, I hope you like Hogwarts," said Aurora.

"Welcome," said Tristen.

Aurora had long blonde hair that fell to her waist, dark green eyes, rosy cheeks, and a rather small frame. Tristen, had black hair, dark brown eyes, and was all in all very attractive.

"Do you know what classes you are taking?" asked Aurora, making conversation.

"I actually have no idea, I am supposed to talk to Professor McGonagall tonight to discuss that," I replied.

"Don't be nervous, she looks tough, but she loves her students. She'll be fair," inserted Ben.

As it turned out, a serious talk with Professor McGonagall was not required. By a great "coincidence" I found a list of all subjects that I had studied at home, with my grandmother's swift signature across the bottom of the page. The list at least, was not a lie. After the dinner feast I showed the list to Professor McGonagall who looked very pleased and told me that I would be set to continue with NEWT level classes.

"See you tomorrow morning Mrs. Antoine," she said, before running over to a pair of second years who were trying to charm each other's arms off.

"Hey I waited for you!"

I turned around to see Aurora standing by the Great Hall entrance, looking very curious. It surprised me that anyone would wait for me, especially when they hardly knew me. But maybe that was how friendships came to be?

"Thanks. What do we do now?" I asked, noticing that not many people remained.

"We go to the Gryffindor Common Room. There is always a password, but don't worry, it's easy to get used to, I'll show you. So what did McGonagall say?" asked Aurora as she began to walk down a long hallway.

"Nothing really, she just told me that I was free to continue taking NEWT level classes."

"Do you have any idea of what you plan on doing after Hogwarts?" wondered Aurora.

I almost stopped walking. After Hogwarts? There was no after Hogwarts, at least not in this life. I had always imagined myself doing something to benefit others, to make life better, but as far as a career went, I had no idea.

"I'm not sure yet, maybe I'll be a Healer. What about you?" I replied, hoping to sound convincing.

"I want to work for the Ministry. I know, I know, it sounds completely horrific, but the whole system has been restored. Its reputation is nothing like it used to be. I want to be a part of that change, I want to make sure that things keep on growing," said Aurora, her eyes gleaming with a bright light that came from within.

"Oh no, that sounds wonderful," I said, even though I knew next to nothing about the Ministry Of Magic.

"Thanks, most people just gave up during the war, and I can see why of course, but something had to be done. My dad, he is Professor here at Hogwarts, he always told me that he would of joined the Ministry if he didn't have such passion for teaching," rambled Aurora.

"Your dad teaches here? What subject?"

"Herbology. Professor Longbottom, I'm sure that you'll meet him soon. What about your parents?"

"My parents died," I whispered, avoiding any sort of eye contact. Here was a girl, telling me everything about her life, and here I was, lying to her about almost every single thing.

"I'm so sorry. During the war?"

"Oh no, just an accident," I said. "I was very young, I don't remember them."

Giving me an understanding nod, Aurora quickly changed the topic.

"James seems to be very fond of you already," she giggled.

Mortified, I shook my head.

"Don't be modest. James may not seem like the most serious guy, but he is a good friend and he will stick by your side," said Aurora, throwing me a hopeful look.

"It's not like that. I just don't date," I choked out, needing to find a reason, any reason to excuse myself.

"Good luck with that," laughed Aurora. "Maybe you will change your mind."

"I doubt it," I replied, softly enough for her not to hear.

"Here we are!"

I stopped in my tracks. In front of me, was a large portrait.

"Password?" asked the rather large lady in the painting, who wore a great pink dress.

"Revolution," replied Aurora as the portrait swung open to reveal a vast room.

The room was decorated in red and gold shades, and was lit by a tall fire. Couches, chairs, desks, pillows, and carpets were scattered amongst the many students who chatted away.

"Potter. Staggs. Get over here!" yelled Aurora, motioning James and Ben over.

"Potter?" I asked, before I could help myself.
