Yeah, that was the episode where Homer pledged money to PBS, didn't have the money, and went on to become a missionary. It was hilarious.

Oscar The Grouch: Just give us the money.
Elmo: Elmo knows where you live.

Where is everyone?!

So I just found out from my boss that this weekend was Harry Potter weekend in a town nearby. I had no idea there was even such a thing! I'm so upset that I didn't know about it. Sounds like I would have loved it! :upset:

Are there any knitters on here? My aunt just started teaching me how to knit this weekend. I really really want to learn! It's really frustrating though, but I think once I get the hang of it I would love it. What kind of knitting needles are best for beginners? I would love to make a Ravenclaw scarf eventually. Does anyone have any patterns for that?

It's really frustrating though, but I think once I get the hang of it I would love it. What kind of knitting needles are best for beginners? I would love to make a Ravenclaw scarf eventually. Does anyone have any patterns for that?

The hardest part is getting the tension right. If you can't get your needle through a stitch, you're pulling way too tight. If, after putting the needle through, your needles aren't touching, you're way too loose. Uneven rows means you're inconsistent with the tension ranging between too tight and too loose. Conquer correct tension, mind you don't drop any stitches and you'll be on your way. And don't be afraid of pulling it all apart and starting over--you'll need to do a lot of that at the beginning.

Your aunt should have started you off on a scarf--that's the basic beginner's project; just rows and rows of knitting, keeping the same number of stitches and making even rows. After that you can add a second color--which simply requires tying on a new skein and learning how to hide the ends.

The patterns of the house scarves changed over the years in the movies. PS/SS had equal blocks of two colors. Later they had mostly one color with thin strips of a second color. No real need for a pattern--you just change colors when needed to match what you see in the movies.

I start beginners out with large needles (12 on up) and thicker yarn because it's easier to see what's going on--especially when it's time to learn the difference from knit stitches and purl stitches. That's not too conducive to making scarves--but it's great, and easier, for practicing and getting your tension right. What I see in the movies looks like size 7 or 8 needles to me.

Good luck! Knitting is great fun and very relaxing.

And yes, the irony of the juxtapostion of a knitting primer and a former Death Eater has not gone unnoticed. Perhaps Dumbledore started him on a new hobby.

After reading your knitting expertise, I think I'm even more scared to learn how to knit than I was before! My aunt didn't really have me start on anything, she just showed me how to start off and showed me a very basic stitch (is that what you would call it?). We only saw each other for a couple of hours this weekend, so she handed me her needles, a ball of yarn and showed me how to start off, but that's about it. I was having a lot of trouble moving on to the second part and ended up giving up for the day. I'm completely clueless. I think tomorrow I might head over to the craft store to pick up a couple of needles, some yarn, and look up videos on YouTube... So thanks for wishing me luck, I will most certainly need it!

Enjoy your knitting. I got adept fairly quickly although I was always hopeless at finishing things off - necklines etc. I did get into designing patterned mittens for my kids though - that was fun.

I Googled 'how to knit' and there's plenty of helpful sites (with illustrations) starting from basics so you should be able to find help easily.

I haven't been around much, I've been busy with Sage's truck over the weekend (he threw a wheel bearing and it's been difficult tyring to get parts and sharing my car so neither of us have to be stranded). I've also been at work, at school, and not wanting to bother with the laptop at home that hangs if I try to use it for more than half an hour at a time.

Then there's the laundry, and the cat, and the rest of every day real life, so I haven't been to CoS much lately. Did anyone actually miss me?

In other news, I'm a bit sad today. I took an exam way back at the beginning of September, and I finally got the results by snail mail. I failed by 20 points. I have wait until December before I can take it again, and it will cost another $399 to re-apply. :sigh:

LyraLovegood
November 2nd, 2011, 7:26 pm
Actually my hair, undyed, is darker than blonde, a sort of nondescript light brown. I've always thought of myself as a blonde because my hair was so pale when I was a child, and it's almost always been long and the ends of it are still very light even though it's kind of dark at the root.

When I dyed it, I was aiming for a lighter color, like perhaps ash-blonde or honey blonde. It turned out redder than I expected, but not really strawberry blonde. It really shines in the sunlight. It's getting darker again, though, I might re-do it soon. But I'll probably pick a different shade. I really do want it paler, not redder.

twinsrule26

LyraLovegood

My siblings all got gray hairs at a much younger age than I did, as did my mom. And my hair falls out in ginormous clumps, but fortunately it grows back again very quickly so it doesn't thin at all.

Which is a good thing, as it's rather fine and if it thinned there wouldn't be much hair there at all.

If I take after my mom's mom I could suffer from hair loss/thinning. If I take after my mom, my dad, and my dad's mom I won't have to worry about. I think I take after the latter.

LyraLovegood
November 17th, 2011, 12:32 am
Sage's hair is still pretty thick, though I can see where he might have a bald spot when he's older. No male pattern baldness, though; his bald spot is top & center, while the hair in front (like right above his forehead) is thick and curly and nice. It's white there in front when he doesn't dye it, though.

Wow. I disappear for a bit, and we talk hair now? Jeeze....what happened to the good times, the parties, the 'let us magic someone in the pool and turn it into chocolate pudding'?

Anyway, my hair- I've had grey hair since 16. I'm 23 now, and I dye it every so often. Usually a dark red/almost black. When I shower- or even just brush it, there is a full sink and brush. My hair is so thick, though, so I have nothing to worry about. Just like with my eye color, the thickness of my hair is like my mom's fathers was. Thick. I have the closest in the family to his shade of blue eyes, according to my mom.

Microwave broke before we left for Daytona (oh, yeah, we left the 8th and returned the 15th). It's the magnetron (that's a heating element). When my mom talks about it she calls it the megatron. We ordered a new one (my mom looked at all the reviews online and the best one had to be ordered from the store) so right now we are without. I made soup (from a can) on the stove for the first time. (microwave's broken before, but I just never made soup then).

LyraLovegood
November 28th, 2011, 11:43 pm
Certainly not. And after stories about someone using pepper spray to keep people away from the stuff she wanted to buy I think staying away from Black Friday sales is a good call.

I did go to PetCo and get MeowMix for Tinkerbelle, but there weren't any crazy sales or crazy shoppers there. Just a black rabbit that was obviously desperate to go home with someone, anyone, and a cat who said quite plainly "don't leave me here!" without making a sound.

leah49
November 29th, 2011, 5:20 pm
Yeah, I don't do Black Friday shopping, either. I prefer staying in bed. Besides, there's nothing I want bad enough. Heck, I don't even know what I'm getting anyone for Christmas. I thought about getting my sister DH Pt. 2 but I don't know if she really wants it. I might just get it for myself instead.

I did make the stupid decision of going to the grocery store on Wednesday, though. That, I think, can be worse than Black Friday shopping (except there's no pepper spray).

What is Black Friday shopping? I've seen it mentioned on a few threads but I've never heard of it.

LyraLovegood
December 5th, 2011, 7:47 pm
It's an American phenomenon. Basically, the day after Thanksgiving (the fourth Thursday of November) all of the stores have enormous sales to get shoppers to start their Christmas shopping. It's called "Black Friday" because it's supposed to pull the profit margins out of "the red" (negative profit flow) into "the black" (positive profit flow).

It's become an exercise in insanity, with people queing up at midnight to be the first one into stores that are opening at their regular hours, and other stores opening up at six or four or two a.m. instead of their regular hours, and people brawling to get their hands on the specific items that are on sale that they really want. I think the woman with the pepper spray might have been a new low. :td::no:

Happy Childermas!

I have no idea what that is, but it's on my Google calendar.

Oh, I guess it's not a happy thing, but a feast to remember the slaughter of children by King Herod.

According to the Gospel of Matthew[1] Herod orders the execution of all young male children in the village of Bethlehem, so as to avoid the loss of his throne to a newborn King of the Jews whose birth has been announced to him by the Magi.

To me the ultimate Cheeseburger has on it ;

2 patties ,cheddar & swiss cheese , red onions , mustard, green pickle relish, shredded iceberg lettuce , dill pickle slices ,tomato slices , mayo , salt & pepper ,garlic butter on a hugh toasted hamburger bun. give it a side of golden fried potato wedges and coleslaw with a big milkshake or a large glass of soda pop and I'm in heaven.

KeepItDark
January 8th, 2012, 3:14 am
Cheeseburger ala me:

blue cheese stuffed 1/2 pound chuck of meat product. has to be mooing, like rare.
Blue cheese mayo
Raddichio (instead of regular lettuce)
a mix of red an white onion
tomato optional.
grilled kaiser roll, preferably poppy seeds-not to burnt, but a nice golden color.

And yes, it was quite a night.

leah49
January 8th, 2012, 5:25 pm
For me the ultimate cheeseburger: 1 patty, american cheese, shredded iceberg lettuce, mayonnaise, ketchup, and of course the hamburger bun (not too picky on how that's prepared as long as it's either white or wheat). On the side: shoestring potatoes (french fries). I'll take either a glass of coke, sweet tea, or chocolate milk.

Not a fan of blue cheese. I can take it as a dip/dressing for my wings, but otherwise it's too...no. It tastes like smelly feet.

So sorry, I do not like mayo. At all. Ranch dressing is okay, but quite honestly I prefer no sauce at all. I'd rather have my bun buttered than have any sort of sauce smeared on it.

I also really hate ketchup/catsup.

horcrux4
January 10th, 2012, 8:04 pm
I like mayo on cold things (most sandwiches) but less on hot things, apart from battered fish if I haven't any tartare sauce. So not in burgers I'm afraid.

As for ketchup, I can't eat hot dogs without it.

LyraLovegood
January 10th, 2012, 8:18 pm
I only eat hotdogs if there's nothing else available, and the only thing I put on them is cheese.

Really, the only condiment I like at all is ranch dressing. And no matter what it is, I'd rather have butter and cheese on it than ranch dressing, and I won't eat it at all if it's got mayo or ketchup.

Piles of snow have canceled my get-a-job appointment. This is after four weeks of unanswered phonecalls and e-mails trying to arrange the appointment in the first place, and after going out and buying a new suit so I would look all professional and hireworthy. Now I have to wait until tomorrow or Friday to even try to reschedule the appointment. :grump:

Also the salesperson forgot to take the antitheft device of my new blazer, the kind where if you try to take it off without the special tool you spray your new clothing with permanent ink. :more grump:

My GF asked me out it took her over a week to get up the nerve to do it .

She works at the grocery store that I shop at, I would talk to her when I bought my groceries . I would say hi and joke around with her, but I never thought she liked me enough to want to go out with me . Then one night just before closing ,I was in getting a few things and I was talking to her like usual and she just blurted out the question would I like to go out for coffee some time. I asked her to repeat what she said to be sure I had heard her right then I said yes.

My point is if you want someone just go for it and ask them out the worst that can happen is they say no and that's fine because you have lost nothing but if they say yes just think of all the great things you will get from dating them.
