Indian Ringneck, Black headed caique, 2 cockatiels and 4 budgies! I'm a bird owner too! I have two blue lovebirds, named Michelle and Bodo  I'll post a photo of them here as soon as possible ! Lemongrass March 6th, 2011, 3:33 am I've never had birds until very recently, one showed up in our backyard, where he came from I have no clue, a yellow and olive-green budgie. Then we got him a friend so he wasn't lonely. It was strange really just finding him, very weak, in the garden, our house doesn't have any near neighbors where he may have come from, so it is a mystery. We thought he would die as he was so weak and was lying down, I spent the whole day with him and he just sat on my chest, finally in the evening someone thought to go and buy proper budgie food, I had been trying to feed him seeds and fruit and whatever else I could find that we had that budgie's supposedly eat, but he just wouldn't eat much. Once we put the budgie food out for him, he just ate and ate, and he was better after that. He really is a very funny character, I love watching him, he's always doing something interesting, the friend we got him is rather boring, but at least she seems to give him some fellow bird company. Also I can't get my budgies to eat any fresh fruit or vegetables, which I have read is recommended to supplement their diet of seed. I sometimes pick grass and grass seeds which they like, but they just don't touch the fresh fruit and vegetables, anyone have any ideas why, or how to entice them into eating some? Fawkesfan1 March 10th, 2011, 11:04 pm I'm a bird owner myself :). Have about a 20 year old Cockatiel. Got him from my grandma when I was just a little kid. He is a joy to be around for the most part and loves to eat plenty of seeds. That is such a sweet story! He must have flown quite some distance. Wherever his previous owners are I'm sure they would be pleased that he has found a nice new home and is being cared for  I love birds and have always wanted a parrot of some kind. The only birds I've had have been chickens, ducks and guinnea fowl though- they live out their natural lifespan free ranging and provide extremely delicious eggs :D I'd recommend anyone with garden space to keep chickens, they are very easy to care for and shop bought eggs just don't compare. They are also lovely pets, I used to have one who was bullied by the other hens and she would come in through the catflap and sit on my lap and perch on the backs of chairs- she was very cute- I don't know if it was affection or if she was just trying to get away from the other chickens though :D Mad_Druid March 12th, 2011, 6:02 am I've never had birds until very recently, one showed up in our backyard, where he came from I have no clue, a yellow and olive-green budgie. The same thing happened to us a couple of years ago, except it was a Red Factor Canary. Wonderful idea to get him a friend. :tu: Regarding the fresh fruit and vegetables, it might just take a while for them to get used to this new addition to their diet; especially if it consisted solely of seeds up until now. Maybe you could try presenting the fruit and vegetables in different ways, e.g, using a clip or laundry peg to hang it from the top or side of the cage, or chopping/shredding it into small pieces and then presenting it in a bowl. I would love to have chickens, although I'm not sure if they would be safe from my cat. The idea of a free range guinea fowl sounds so lovely! That is a really good idea, I am going to try that. The yellow/green budgie loves to play so I am very optimistic about your idea of hanging the fruit from the cage. Thanks so much :D Mad_Druid March 12th, 2011, 3:17 pm That is a really good idea, I am going to try that. My time with them was pretty short lived, only about three years. katielouise September 6th, 2011, 10:46 am We used to have two Cockatiels. They gave us lots of babies! So, so cute. We had to sell all the birds though. |
