Gospel Music

I'm pretty sure this isn't a thread yet, so here I go.

For all you Christians out there, I have some questions. I'm confused as to what makes gospel music gospel music. If it has to worship God, then CCM (Christian Contemporary Music) would fit that category, but some people disagree with that. If it has to not have contemporary instruments/beats ( drums, electric guitar, etc.) then classical music would work as well, and that's not exactly gospel music, is it? So I hope I gave you something to think about, and I hope you give your opinions. :)

I'm not Christian, but I listen to a lot of gospel music. I usually find it to be characterised by Christian themes, call-and-respond choruses and a simple beat and chord structure, with other musical flavours from soul and blues. I'm not quite sure how a definition of gospel could ignore modern musical instruments, as I generally consider the most identifiable form of gospel to be the "black" gospel of the mid-20th century, which heavily utilises these instruments. But that just might be me.
