Hey

After reading your post I decided to go look at the clouds. I can`t seem to see the dark mark or dog but I however see lots of faces. Maybe it`s just my mind playing tricks.Same here... personally I see one big face, with a very shocked expression, just when the birds appear...

I've looked at in once and it's very, very impressive. I'm not sure how much updating will be done by her. I think she's probably got a very dedicated team of webmasters doing the backbone of work. Still, it's impressive that an author is willing to get closer to her fans the way she has done :)

It's not so much that people are taking credit, it's just that they aren't giving credit. :) Not to worry.

Thanks for posting that information jimmybondo87! I'm sure a lot of people will sleep well tonight knowing that they've found all that there is to discover...for now. :)

Perhaps someone who has some background in Latin could give us a rough translation of what jimmy posted? I'm afraid the translation springthing posted isn't making much sense (darned auto-translators. ;)).

Thanks for the screenshot, zigwiwi! If that latin in the book says what I think it says:
Lorem Ipsum Delor sit amet consectetuer adipiscing elit sed diam nonummy nibh eulsmod Tincidunt ut Lacreet dothetti Lorem Ipsum Delor sit amet consectetuer adipiscing elit sed diam nonummy nibh eulsmod Tincidunt ut Lacreet dothetti Lorem Ipsum Delor sit amet consectetuer adipiscing elit sed diam nonummy nibh eulsmod Tincidunt ut Lacreet dothetti

Then anyone familiar with the older versions of Microsoft Office will know that this text is 'Blank page fill', often seen in older versions of Powerpoint and Publisher. I have NO IDEA what it means but it is random pagefill. I heard someone say once that more or less it means 'This is page fill, put your desired content here' in a nutshell. To be honest, I don't even think it is Latin because the university of Notre Dame online Latin traslator didn't recognise any of the words I input and it is fairly good usually.

By the way, the woman on the phone says:
"Hello?"
"Is anyone there?"
then hangs up.

I have a question. In the fan sites/trophy room I put the gold medals in the two boxes on the first shelf without even noticing there was another box on the third shelf and it won't let me take them out. Has anyone tried putting one in the top box, or does it appear later, or is there something else that is supposed to be put in it? Thanks

Check out the NEW changes to JK's site. The wizard of the month has changed for June, and there is a new featured fan site!

I can't get the wizard of the month to open without locking up. Anyone else having the same problem?

BTW, I would have posted this in the other thread, but it's STILL locked. Any chance we can get that opened up again so we can discuss the new changes? I suspect there may be more to explore each month. There have been other things I have seen there that hadn't been discussed yet, but I was discouraged from posting because of the locked thread.

Aww, no recognition for CoS. I'll keep my fingers and toes crossed then. :D

Sadly I can't seem to get Gwenog Jones's page to open up either. Maybe Gwenog was a pioneer in the area of computer malfunction?

Edit: There seems to be a new bit on Hermione in the Characters section, unless I really am going mad I just don't remember it from last time. Was that bit about West Ham football club there last month too?

According to The Lexicon (http://www.hp-lexicon.org), Gwenog Jones is the Captain and Beater of the only all-female national Quidditch team, the Holyhead Harpies. Here's a bit on Ms Jones:

After a game she enjoys relaxing with friends, drinking butterbeer, and listening to The Weird Sisters. It has been said of Jones that "people who disagree with [her] have a nasty habit of turning into woodlice." She herself says that the Harpies "are easily the most exciting team playing," and added that witches make better Quidditch players than wizards. It is doubtful that anyone will disagree with her to her face.

Problem solved!

Oh my!! There's two pictures of the smiths in her bio section!!!!
Yeah! Good for you Rowling!!!!!

I know!!!!!!! I nearly fell out of my chair when I saw those buttons. Although, it really doesn't surprise me now that I think about it... one of the central themes of the Smiths music was the trials and tribulations of growing up, which certainly relates to HP. I think if I ever have the chance to meet her, I just might have to ask her what her favourite Smiths album is, instead of asking some super clever question related to HP.

I wonder if she's picked up the new Mozzer album. ;)

Anyway, back to the website discussion... I have collected everything, save for the darn spider. I've been sitting here for an hour, and I can never catch it when it scuttles over her desk. I'll give it a go tomorrow. Maybe it's just my fatigue that's hindering me, and not a complete lack of eye-hand coordination.

As for the book sitting on the desk in the locked room, perhaps that will be her way of previewing some of Book Six. As someone else pointed out, the Latin on the page now is just the gobbledygook that is used in the publishing industry to represent copy that's yet to be written... we should keep checking that page to see if anything shows up there in the next few days and weeks [hopefully not months]. After all, according to a tidbit on the Leaky Cauldron website, JKR has said recently that her page will be updated again soon.

[Although... we all know her definition of "soon" isn't always what the rest of the world defines as soon.]

By the way, I'm a veryvery new person on these boards. Hope you don't mind me jumping into your discussion.

Still haven't caught the spider. Guh.

And I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but on the Extra Stuff cork board, there's a pic of JKR's husband near the top, and a business card for her literary agent is tacked on the bottom of the board, obscured by the radio.

Anyone else think so? If you look out the window there's like, a village, or spread of homes on the hills outside. But then, why would Peeves be inside the Riddle House. 1. Nice picture of the opened DND door! Has anyone tried enlarging it, to see the objects inside the room in detail? For example: who's the couple in the picture frame on the wall ? Tom Riddle's parents? JKR's grandparents? Is it supposed to be a room in JKR's house? And what's that other thing beside the picture frame, the thing hanging right above the desk. Another picture frame?

2. About the Dark Mark, why did she put one on the scroll for the Immeritus Fan Site? JKR did say that the Dark Mark indicates spoilers for Book 5. Does this mean that for people who have not read Book 5, you're better off not checking out the Immeritus Fan Site award section, because you'll find out that Sirius will die in Book 5? Or is the Dark Mark hinting at something else? Would love to hear everyone's feedback to lessen my confusion

Wow this is one long thread. I gave uo at about page 8, so forgive me for repeating. Can someone post an update at all? Have we found out what the phone does when it rings or how to open the door? Are there any more than the four items for the scrapbook? And has anyone left any of the other pages idle, like the 'extras' or 'trophies' or 'fan sites'? I left extras and I heard something happened, but I was on here at the time so I didn't see it.

The watch is tied into your computer's internal clock so that it shows what time it is where ever you are. I also think that the window is tied into the clock so that it shows night and day depending on what it is where you are. Some people say that the watch gets multiple hands after you leave it sitting for a while and Peeves comes in, but I haven't seen this.

To answer your questions:

The phone doesn't do anything when it rings. If you pick it up, a woman says hello and then hangs up (nothing, really).

Some one hacked the site and saw that there were only 4 items to get at the time.

Any pages that are left idle might be changed by Peeves, like knocking a pencil holder over on the main page and writing on the mirror where the door is.

The door does not open to anything yet. There is a book behind it, but there are pics posted and it's only a place holder for now.

The wizard and witch of the month does seem to be updated monthly.

There have been no new changes besides the monthly thing stated above to the site since it have been put up.

The door opens after something like 2 days, 4 hours, 45 mins. But all you can see is a picture of JK rowling's parents that is also on her biography page, a picture of the view out of the window and a book the at the moment shows some autofill text like that you get in publisher.

Unless they changed the code then that is just a rumor.
When I looked at it when the site first went live there was nothing there that would open the door.

Pippab3, did you actually wait for 2 days, 4 hours and 45 minutes? I'm impressed! I just cheated and downloaded the the picture of open DND door on the harry latino web-site. It's now my PC wall-paper. The picture of the view outside the window is very intriguing..... I wonder if it will be a port-key that would allow us to go outside. I hope JKR updates soon!

About the wristwatch on the desk (main page). Yes, it does go crazy after Peeves passes by and knocks over the pens! The face changes color, the hands go round and round, it stops, then that's about it. I guess it's just a reaction to Peeves? At first I thought it was like a Time-turner. I tried clicking on it, but wasn't fast enough. It was back to normal by the time my mouse-pointer reached it.

JKR has updated her News and Rumours section of her page. I'm eternally grateful for this inclusion:

"...And incidentally...I wasn't really Squidward that day in the MuggleNet chat room either. That's a Spongebob Squarepants in-joke. I used a different name. So you can stop logging on as Squidward now ;)"

We had to ban people from registering with the username Squidward here at CoS because there were just so many people who thought Squidward was JKR. Some of these Squidwards even provided information in their profiles such as "Real Name: Joanne, Interests: Writing, my son and daughter, Location: Scotland etc". Bah.

Oh happy day, finally we will receive some respite from the Squidwards! :D

I'm also glad that she clarified her Voldy-rag joke. Some people take JKR far too seriously.

jimmybondo7 -- they're onto you, mate! Run for the hills:

"...And if you don't understand what I'm talking about here, you weren't online when a clever Potter fan hacked his way through the door with the "Do No Disturb" sign on it..."

If you hear sirens, pack up your toys and leave immediately...and don't mention CoS. :D

What you need to do is go to the FAQ and click on any one of the envelopes that flutter down on JKR's desk (it really don't matter which). After you do this a piece of paper will appear in the centre of the screen with the FAQ for the envelope you selected. Underneath this piece of paper, on the left-hand side is another piece of paper that gives you options to select from. There's "About Books", "About Me", "Other Stuff", and "FAQ Poll". Click on the "FAQ Poll" and you're in business. :)

I would advise you to click on the Dark Mark before you cast your vote to ensure that we get the best possible question answered. :D

Wow just woke up this morning to this. I wonder if she saw the same thing done on another site. Yet, she confirmed what we were saying about the text in the book. Im a little perturbed, however as people refering to my actions as hacking. Im sorry to say but this was readily available information. Im still trying to figure out if she is annoyed with me or something. Anyways im still working on it and I have plans to maybe make a small website to publish all the findings and thoeries about her site, so that is in the works. I will check the scripts again tonight, if they haven't blocked my ip :p that is. Tell me what you think about the website idea, I know it would take the load of this thread off of Cos. Tata for now

PS-If it is me who Jo is referring to then maybe she reads Cos...and that means shes a member, but don't worry Jo if you're reading this i won't try and find your name lol.

i think she was referring to you jim (i think, okay? i'm not saying i'm 100% sure). if it had been someone else, i don't know who he is because in other forums, when i look at it, most of them refers to 'a guy from the cos forums who hacked on the site or sumthin'.

i wouldn't be too sure that she is a member of cos. this forum is readable even if you're not a member. anyway, even if she's not a member, i think she looks at this site. or if she is kinda busy, maybe her 'sources' has told her.

if it was you who 'jo' (can i call her Jo? erm... i think i can, well, anyway..) was referring to, it must feel cool (if i was you, my mouth would reach up to my ears. lol :p ) coz he said a CLEVER Potter fan. hehe :D

on your idea about making a little site on what you've found can be okay. but i don't know, wouldn't it be possible to get you in trouble? (just thinking about the possibility here.. but i'm not against your idea ). :D

Ok, I have been reading this thread since it started, and everyone and their mother has tried to get the door to open without cheating. No one, including some of the most gifted hackers---(cough, cough) I mean computer geniuses have been able to do it.

Sooooo, today I read that if you leave it on for more than 2 days, it opens? Has anyone else stayed in front of the upopenable door for 2 days straight? I know that Jo said something about patience is the key, or something like that....but somehow I think that this is a misunderstanding about the door opening.

Input anyone?

P.S. A site with JK Rowling hints would be great.

ok heres my theory on the door. well on the door there is a Do Not Disturb sign, correct? Well maybe if we "disturb" the occupant enough the door will finally open. On just about every page that you take a Portkey to get to it seems that Peeves "Disturbs it" in some way. Well maybe if you got to every page and wait long anough for Peeves to come on each page (including the one with the door....) maybe the door will open....ill try it and update soon.

Has anyone noticed that on the main page, when the watch's hands fly around and the pencil cup gets knocked down, some of the gum wrappers at the bottom and one near the ‘welcome’ part move? Perhaps this doesn’t mean anything, but maybe later on when the site is updated one or more of the gum wrappers will be part of a new secret.

Thanks to Masterfroggy, this is what the text says in english-

But I must explain to you how all this mistaken idea of denouncing pleasure and praising pain was born and I will give you a complete account of the system, and expound the actual teachings of the great explorer of the truth, the master-builder of human happiness.

No one rejects, dislikes, or avoids pleasure itself, because it is pleasure, but because those who do not know how to pursue pleasure rationally encounter consequences that are extremely painful.

Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure.

To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it? But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?"

(Maybe this is a hint at what is going to happen in the coming books.

I "got" the flying pig reference too, and I wasn't alive when it happened. Maybe she's underestimating the pop culture knowledge of the HP fanbase. ;)

And the floating Aunt Marges would have been an excellent publicity gag!! I'd be thrilled to see one of those things float over my house... but I live in the middle of nowhere so that's unlikely.

I bet she'll update the poll later rather than sooner. The site is becoming more widely known each day, so she may want to give as many people as possible a chance to vote. Patience may be the key, but it's still vexing!

I think someone said it's by Cicero.

yes, and i wont take credit for this -
it has been mentioned several times in this thread but i dont blame you for not checking, its pretty overhwelming

also, in the rumors section of her website she says its a text placeholder before the creator of the document adds text. its just a standard placeholder (someone before even said it is in microsoft publisher)

i myself do not believe that it has any significance, though i considered it. i dont think she would lie to a thing like that. i can understand the title of the next book, the plot, the next character to die but if it has been confirmed as placeholding text, i dont believe theres any reason to think it has to do with a plot. sure, she can be misleading but i think if she had wanted to conceal it, thats what she would have done rather than lying.

-just my fitty cents

EDIT: though i dont deny that the latin translated looks oddly coincidental of a plotline backstory for someone... or whatever i mean

Just to clear things up, here is the exact quote from Jo's website:

The text on the book behind the (ahem) impossible-to-open door means something highly significant.

First things first:

Apologies if this has been mentioned before, but there's simply too much to go through. I'm a newbie to this thread, but when I was browsing through JKR's website, more specifically, the fan site page, I found something very interesting.

James Potter's Award for Special Services to the School

We know about Riddle's. We know about Harry's and Ron's. But James Potter?

If you look very carefully you can see at the top left of the screen, beneath the "About", an award to someone called "ES POTTER". This obviously refers to James Potter, but to make sure, look at that specific area when loading the page. For a brief second before the "About" comes down, you see the full award. It is indeed James Potter.

Now, this could be any old award. But right next to it is Riddle's award, and while they have different colours (probably because they were given 30 years apart, but with same overall design), the inscription is the same:- "For services to the school".

We know how Riddle got his. But how did James Potter earn his? Something to earmark for the future.

Just noticed, on the fan sites bit (with all of the trophies), as you go on to it look at the rightmost trophy on the middle row (the one the scroll drops on top of). It definitely says Percy Weasley. So what the hell did Percy get a trophy for?

Also, my opinion on the book in the closed room is this: You know how before Ootp was released an extract from it was released on to the internet? I reckon that eventually that room will open and the book will hold an extract from probably the opening chapter of book 6. It could also be the place where the title of the book is announced?

I wish the questions on the FAQ Poll bit were a little less specific. I'd rather it was something like "Is Mark Evans significant?" to which JKR could answer "maybe..." to keep us all guessing.

That's my 2 pence.

jlowe
June 2nd, 2004, 6:43 pm
I agree, I think the book would have some kind of small passage from book 6. Maybe it will be placed there right before the release-something that will blow us all away and that makes sure we all go wait outside the bookstore 10 hours before it opens. :)

A lot of people speculate if it could have been Dumbledore's brother. It's being discussed in Aberforth Dumbledore - the Hog's Head barman? (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=11650&highlight=Aberforth+barman).

You can't get to use an avatar until you get access to Hogsmeade, for which you must be at least a third year. More about that here (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=7627).

I was looking at the French version of JK's website and I noticed one tiny bit that's not in the English version - it's just a few additional words in the Extra Stuff section on Hermione: "...Hermione a eu pous nom de famille 'Puckle', qu'on pourrait traduire par 'Dulutin', mais cela ne lui allait pas du tout..."

Can any French-speakers here enlighten me as to what the highlighted part means? :)

It's quite interesting looking at the website in all the different languages (even if you don't speak them!) - I see that the Holyhead Harpies have a different name in Spanish, for example, though not in French. Hours of fun... :)

with regards to the latin translation someone posted up on here...i'm confused. I always thought the 'lorem ipsum' text was simply a nonsense place filler. i know it is used a lot in the publishing world etc just so there is text on a page, but i was unaware that it actually meant something?

i highly doubt that it is anyone's backstory, as it is the same latin text used for lots of things, not just specifically related to harry potter, but i'd be curious to know where the translation came from. it's been a while since i did latin, but a couple of those words don't look 'real'...

Jimmybondo, if JKR is annoyed with you, congradulations she knows you exist :)!

Its kind of annoying that she wasn't really Squidward...but maybe thats a joke as well (ha ha)? People were running around looking for the logs.

that's weird, you'd think that they would explain to the prefects that they could dock points.

Well, if one were to zone out during the prefects meeting, I'm sure one wouldn't know about being able to dock points. I totally relate to zoning out all the time.

as for the hi-lited part, it translates roughly into "that one could translate to 'Dulutin' ". Basically, I believe that it means you could see Hermione's cat's name, which I'm assuming who "Puckle" is in the French versions, as "Dulutin", which I'm guessing is a French slang. What it means, though, I'm not sure...

[/QUOTE]

It is Latin, and it is a filler. It's a somewhat twisted derivative of an actual Latin work, so some of the words should look real. I don't think anybody can really pinpoint when it started being used as a filler in computer works and why it was twisted the way it was. Probably some drug-induced choice...

And congrats to Jimmybondo for being recognized as the "hacker" on Jo's site!

2 things...

If she could update that, then I thinks she can update the FAQ poll!!

Also, if she updated with answers that basically ask some of the questions we have been talking about here, that means she frequents these boards or others that are similar.

Thanks for the translation! :) Puckle was Hermione's original surname, but JK didn't keep it for long, as she thought it was too frivolous. So presumably Dulutin is some "frivolous" French name.

(And Crookshanks seems to be called Pattenrond in French.)

If you goto the FAQ area( clicking the paper clips) It will drop the letters on the desk. Click anyone of them and it will bring up the pages. One the far left there is a little one that pops out when you hover over it with your cursor. The bottom menu item shows the FAQ Poll.

So far I know of two people that have gotten past the door. Jim and Myself. We cheated though. We decompiled the website and made our own way in. Well atleast I did. I am sure Jim did something similar.

In the room with the DND door, you can see the top of a keyhole now. I know someone's mentioned this already, but do you think we have to wait till the DND sign gradually slides down and falls off the handle or something? 'cause I swear that keyhole wasn't there the last time.

And it's nighttime where I am and I see those two white strips of light in the window. They were there last time. Strange, but somehow they remind me of searchlights. Any ideas? And what about those clouds? Is it just me, or has it become awfully cloudy now. Not to mention the clouds look sorta creepy, as if they're carrying some brownish stuff with them. Argh, whats with the stupid music in the background? And that shadow in the mirror is creeping me out.

Okay, now peeves just came through the room and wrote 'peeves woz here' and that shadow has grown creepier. Its like someone skinny is actually standing there. Looks like a head and shoulders to me.. This site is scary!

in reference to rune's statement of seeing 2 white stripes across the window, i checked that out, and i believe that it is the light shining on the window. if you turn the light off, you'll see the white stripes are gone. i also think the keyhole on the dnd door was always there because i clicked on it about 100 times! lol

So what do people think about the trophies? cos i posted a bit about it a couple of pages before but no-one said anything. Anyway, what i thought is that they were head boy/girl ones and that the SHEILDS were the special services ones (you can just about read them). P.S. head boy/girls all fit (lilly, percy etc) but Bellatrix?

I have been monitoring the main page on her site for over a week now. If you leave it on the start up page, the desk, for a while this is what I have noticed each time:

The wind starts blowing, the gum wrappers move, and the watch starts glowing a bluish/green, the hands start going round and the numbers turn into dots. Then there is, what sounds like, Peeves' cackle, then the pen holder is knocked over with a "clunk" sound following. After this, beginning at the lower right hand side of the screen a black fairy-like creature (a doxy, maybe?) flies across the screen and then exits where the cell phone is.

This will not happen again until you leave the desk to go to another part of the site, like the trophy room, or bookshelves. When you go back to the desk, the pen holder is back upright and if you wait again the whole Peeves/doxy thing will happen again.

I have tried numerous times to click on the doxy or the watch, but nothing happens. It's very frustrating! :sigh:

I wonder what it all means. There has got to be some clue involving the watch at least.

What about the Quidditch cup? Harry and the team won the first two years, didn't they? Maybe the trophies are for Quidditch.

Of course, the whole team would probably be listed.......

I think Harry also got a special services award when he defeated Quirril/Voldemort in the first year.

The FAQ rumour questions are kind of pointless, cos the 3 things, if any of them were really significant they'd be huge bombshells JKR wouldn't want to give away before the 6th books (or 7th mebbe). I reckon any answers we get will either eliminate the question as a possibility (i.e. a straight no) or raise more questions than they answer.

Does anybody else find it extremely ironic that all any of us can think about is a locked door at the end of a corridor? Sound familiar to anyone? Ha, well now I know how Harry felt. Congrats to JimmyBondo on his uber-hacking abilities. I bet he feels special to be recognized by Jo. Bravo.

I still think the place with impossible-to-open door is in the RIddle House. That might sort of explain the creepy shadow coming out of the open door in the mirror.
But i hope that book on the other side of the door gives us more clues to the sixth book.

PADFOOT LIVES! (I hope.)

I made the Mark Evans connection when i read the fifth book, but I discarded it to my mental closet for a while, and you know whats it's like in all of our closets, we find whatever we discarded, months, maybe even years later.

My first post...

Thoughts on the “Extra Stuff” room
Street Cars (the Taxi service mentioned on several of the cards) may be a reference to the 1951 Film “A Street Car Named Desire” (Erised)

If you stay on the Extra Stuff page for a while, a gust of wind (Peeves?) blows one of the Cards off the board and moves the dangling Biro.

The Telephone number of one of the Taxi Cards on the left hand side of the Pin Board starts with 0125 which could be the beginning of 01254 which is the STD Code for Blackburn (a town in the North-West of England) – just an idle thought and I have no idea why there should be a connection with Blackburn.

Thoughts on the Locked Door Room
When you turn off the light switch, the light level on both the Do Not Disturb sign and on the door handle does not change – I suspect that this maybe an error. I suspect that the DND sign and handle have been created on a different plane in the Flash movie ready for the sign to be animated out of the way and the handle to rotate, at some future time in the site’s development. (Maybe, when JKR is ready to open the room, Peeves will brush the sign off the door and the door can then be opened).

Perhaps the room behind the door is JKR’s study (as others have said, the photographs shows her parents) and the Flash script that jimmybondo found refers to this room as “my_room”.

There was some comment earlier in the thread that the Mirror next to the Door was a Mirror of Erised. I think that maybe correct. However, in the Erised image, the light switch is half way along the wall to the right of the door and the wall is too narrow for mirror to have hung there.

Thoughts on the Fan Site Page
I am particularly impressed by the spider’s web next to the “Archive Shield”. Looking closely, this spider has managed to spin curved threads between the radial spokes (Spiders spin straight threads which only look curved from a distance, or on an old web they sag with –not against - gravity).

Thoughts on Coffee Stains
Must be Magical Coffee Stains – every stain is the identical shape with the same two drip marks.

unfortunately, when you all say jimmybondo hacked... he really didnt

he said so himself earlier... no matter ya'll (and im not trying to discredit any of you)

its just checking files that are already there

this is how it worked

he started looking at files
he found the images of the flash for when the door opens, the individual images

he used an image editor/animator to put them all together and add the door animation

i believe it wasnt ONLY jimmyb that "hacked" "his" way in... i dont recall right now because i gotta go to dinner and im lazy to check but whoever else helped should get credit too
