"You can't take the sky from me!"

Serenity
Created by Joss Whedon

Five hundred years in the future, aboard a small, incredibly mobile spaceship a crew tries to survive.

The film centers around Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, who now ekes out a living pulling off small crimes and transport-for-hire aboard his ship, "Serenity." He leads a small, eclectic crew who are the closest thing he has left to family -- squabbling, insubordinate and undyingly loyal. When Mal takes on two new passengers -- a young doctor and his unstable, telepathic sister -- he gets much more than he bargained for.

The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, who will stop at nothing to reclaim the girl. The crew that was once used to skimming the outskirts of the galaxy unnoticed find themselves caught between the unstoppable military force of the Universal Alliance and the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers, savages who roam the very edge of space.

Hunted by vastly different enemies, they begin to discover that the greatest danger to them may be on board "Serenity" herself.

I loved Firefly the episodes that I've seen, and the bad thing is I have it on dvd I just haven't gotten around to watching it, I've been obsessed with the OC lately. But yes I second what IceKat said... I will most definitely be there, with bells on!

Yay Joss! He really needs to do another tv show though :(

Agreed Destructo Girl,

TV just isn't the same without a Joss show on. :upset:

I'm rewatching Buffy from the beginning (in my spare time) to cope with this.

"Serenity" will no doubt rock. I only hope it will be successful enough to warrant a trilogy.

Serenity Action Figures (http://www.diamondselecttoys.com/news/default.asp)

DIAMOND SELECT TOYS AND COLLECTIBLES TO PRODUCE ACTION FIGURES INSPIRED BY UNIVERSAL PICTURES’ SERENITY

Diamond Select Toys and Collectibles announced today it has reached a licensing agreement with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group to produce action figures inspired by Universal Pictures’ upcoming futuristic action-adventure film, Serenity. Directed by Oscar®- and Emmy-nominated writer/director Joss Whedon (creator of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel), the film is scheduled for release on September 30th, 2005.

The Serenity action figure line will be based on several of the main characters from the upcoming film, a continuation of the short-lived Fox TV series, Firefly. This is Diamond Select Toys’ third addition to the Oscar® Winner Joss Whedon product line. Like the Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel lines, each figure will be approximately 6" high and will feature character-specific accessories and multiple points of articulation.

"When Universal announced its plans to produce the Serenity film, we knew that it would inspire a set of great action figures," said Diamond Select Toys Director, Chuck Terceira. "The series grew in popularity on DVD and the following of fans that Joss Whedon has created is phenomenal."

DST will be debuting the Serenity action-figures at the upcoming Pasadena SciFi Grand Slam (March 11-13) and Wizard World LA (March 18-20) shows.

# Paperback: 160 pages
# Publisher: Titan Books (September 30, 2005)

And I've heard that Joss is planning a 3-issue comic series, which will cover the 8-month time period between the end of the Firefly series and the beginning of the Serenity movie.

Seems like the shiny folks at Universal are making sure the world is ready for Serenity, come September 30!!!

oh yay!! it would be even better if the success of the movie brought the tv series back on the air! there were so many things left hanging when they cancelled the show--and if the movie doesn't "finish" the storyline then we'll need more!
i want mal and inara to hook up!
and i want to know more about the creepy doctors (two by two, hands of blue).

If it is successful enough to warrant a trilogy, it'll be the Star Wars of the 21st century. Otherwise, a second film wouldn't come quickly after, since Joss is doing Wonder Woman after Serenity.

A new video interview with Joss and Morena from last weekend's Wizard Con is here (http://themoviereporter.com/movies2/josswhedonwwint.php) (you'll need Windows Media Player to view it) - - Joss talks a bit about his upcoming Wonder Woman project.

And some great pictures from the Wizard Con panel/autograph session are here (http://inlandempirestrikesback.net/v-web/gallery/wizardworldserenity?page=1).

Also, the 'Finding Serenity' book has been released! Mine is on order, hopefully I'll have it tomorrow! Just one step closer to the Big **** Movie! :D

Product Description:
In this eclectic anthology of essays, former cast member Jewel Staite, "Kaylee," philosopher Lyle Zynda, sex therapist Joy Davidson, and noted science fiction and fantasy authors Mercedes Lackey, David Gerrold, and Lawrence Watt-Evans contribute to a clever and insightful analysis of the short-lived cult hit Firefly. From What went wrong with the pilot? to What's right about Reavers? and how the correspondence between the show's creator Joss Whedon and the network executives might have actually played out, the writers interrogate the show's complexity and speculate about what might have been if the show Firefly had not been cancelled.

I've got 3 seasons of Buffy (4, 5, 6), and will be buying Firefly as soon as I get some money...until then I just bum it off my brother. And I do agree, Joss needs a new TV show that I can become obsessed with.

Ooooh, me!! The commentaries in the Firefly DVD set are priceless...Joss and Nathan (Fillion) do one for the pilot episode, and they are HI-LARIOUS! And Nathan and Alan (Tudyk) do one for the "War Stories" episode that is also great.

The Firefly DVD set...EXCELLENT.

Joss posted an update over on the 'versal board - - some trailer news, finally, from The Man himself!

Posted: 22 Apr 2005 6:45 pm
Post subject: Scrumptralescent News!

Hey guys.

I'm here on the official site, so that can only mean one thing: somebody finally told me my password! (Again.) It probably also means that I have some big-*** announcement or other. Well tops on the announcement list is this: after months of intensive yoga, i can finally touch my toes! (They feel round and bunion-y.)

But there's more! I'm talkin' movie news, peeps, so no more drumroll: Trailer. Serenity. Tuesday.

Yeah, kids, the haps is hap'nin', and it runs thus: EXCLUSIVELY on Apple movie trailers (and linked through this site as well of course) will be a small, medium, large or FULLSCREEN trailer for Serenity the major motion movie. Yeah, THE trailer. And the following Friday said trailer hits theaters. Which theaters? Until I get confirmation you'll have to guess, but I'm betting you can.

Now, here's a word of warning: this trailer ain't shy. If you're looking to live totally spoiler-free, know that there's plenty of key dialogue and images running through this bad boy. It's pretty tasty, though, and it doesn't give everything away. But close scrutiny will definitely learn you much of what's to come. (Anakin TOTALLY goes evil.) It's a nice piece to while away the time till September, and hopefully should intrigue th' peeps that don't have coats of brown.

The only thing more exciting than y'all finally seeing this was showing it to Nathan. Like a schoolboy giggled he.

Bye-ee!

Joss "You can't take my toes from me" Whedon.

Firefly did air in Canada once upon a time (is there a SPACE channel, or something...? I think that's what it's called), but I'm not sure if they're still showing the episodes.

However, good news in the US, the Sci-Fi Channel is going to start airing the episodes in July! This will be a great marketing tool for the Movie!

I actually saw Serenity three weeks ago during the first batch of 'hit & run' screenings, and am lucky enough to get to see it again this coming Thursday. Seeing the whole cast reassembled on the Big Screen, and seeing that gorgeous ship fly again, was a very surreal experience. It was incredible, traumatizing, breathtaking, exciting, sobering, hi-larious, tear-jerking, every possible emotion you could imagine rolled into one 2-hour roller-coaster ride.

And I expected nothing less from Joss. :D

How does Firefly compare to Buffy?

IMO, it blew Buffy out of the water. And I am an AVID Buffy fan, I loved it from the first moment it aired. But I really think that Firefly, though short-lived, was Joss's best work. The story was just so compelling...and it was such a simple concept...it can hardly be called 'Sci-Fi', there are no vampires, no demons, no aliens - - just people, 500 years in the future. Earth got used up, and people had to expand out into the galaxy, terraforming other planets to sustain human life. "Firefly" is actually the type/class of ship that they travel in, and "Serenity" is her name. It's captained by Malcolm Reynolds (Nathan Fillion), he's a former Independent Sergeant that was on the losing side of a Civil War (the Alliance won the war and united all the planets under one rule), now he eeks out a living taking jobs as he can get them (sometimes illegal ones, a Firefly is generally used for smuggling), and keeping his crew safe. "Keep flying" is the theme of the show. They have pretty much the same problems that we have now, finding a job, keeping out of the reach of 'Big Brother', government struggles, things like that.

But as with Joss's other work, you can't help but fall madly in love with these characters, and relate to some or all of them in some ways. They're the most well-developed and well-acted characters in any 'verse I've ever been familiar with. It was amazingly obvious that the cast loved each other, and equally as obvious that Joss poured every ounce of love he possessed into that little gem of a show. His only mistake was entrusting it to the people at the Fox network, who simply didn't get it, and badly mishandled it (airing the episodes out of order, which confused the audience, pre-empting it for baseball, and putting it in the Friday night timeslot of Death).

I'm sure all of this sounds pretty cheesy, but honestly, it's how many, many people come to feel about Firefly, and as a result, Serenity the Movie.

Go rent the Firefly DVD set, before the movie is released in Sept. I'm willing to bet good money that you'll be glad you did. :)

BluecanaryLite
May 25th, 2005, 7:02 am
Wow, if it's better than Buffy it must be pretty gosh-darned good.

It's kinda funny how his concept for BtVS as a movie was mishandled, so he took it to TV, and now the same thing is kinda happening to Firefly, only in reverse.

Firefly certainly sounds intriguing. I'm sorry the station that aired Buffy and Angel in Ontario didn't pick it up. You've certainly got me looking forward to Serenity now!

Totally ditto what you said about falling madly in love with Joss's characters. Even ones I didn't like initially, like Anya and Tara, I ended up being attached to, except for Kennedy (**** her). I so miss seeing the Scoobies on TV every week. No other show compares. Maybe if Serenity is hugely successful, they'll air Firefly on a non-upper cable station in Ontario. *fingers crossed*

Anyways, I was wondering about the characters, can they be classified as variations on those of Buffy? Or are they more unique?

Anyways, I was wondering about the characters, can they be classified as variations on those of Buffy? Or are they more unique?

The first time I watched Firefly I immediatly made comparisons between it's and Buffy's characters.

Mal = Angel
Kaylee = Willow
Sheppard = Giles
Wash = Xander
Summer = Drusilla (she even does the accent in 'Shindig')
Jayne = Spike, with the tension with Mal and all
Zoe = Buffy maybe?
Inara = she reminds me of Tara a bit
Simon = hmmm...Riley?

I love everything about Buffy, (except for Kennedy) and Firefly blows it out of the water....well the sky :p :p

IceKat55

Anyways, I was wondering about the characters, can they be classified as variations on those of Buffy? Or are they more unique?
There can be certain similarities drawn to Buffy/Angel 'verse characters, I'm sure...but honestly, not too many.

Wash = Xander may be the closest I can think of. He brings the funny, he's the light-hearted character, brave in his own way but also sort of a chicken when it comes to the rough & tumble...he's the "every-geek", I think everyone can relate to him in one way or another. And he's a heck of a pilot! As Kaylee (Serenity's mechanic, a very happy-go-lucky girl) said of him once..."He can thread a needle with this bird." :)

Kaylee herself is the light on the ship...she brings about a sense of family, and makes the rest of them realize that hey, here we are, we're all we've got! I love Kaylee, because I personally can relate to her very, very much.

Mal (the Captain) is a very dark, tortured character (as was Angel), but for his own reasons. He was a strong believer in the fight against the Alliance, and was deeply religious. Once he ended up on the losing side of the war, he lost his faith and still struggles mightily with that. Now, his only concern seems to be for his crew...he's fiercely protective of them, and will end anyone who tries to bring them to harm.

Joss does have his typical Warrior Woman in this series (the Buffy-character), her name is Zoe, she's married to Wash. She's a much more stoic personality than Buffy ever was, though. Zoe is a stone-cold killer if she has to be, without blinking an eye. She fought in the war with Mal and is steadfastly loyal to him (which causes a bit of strife in her marriage), and she is madly in love with Wash. They're probably my favorite couple that Joss has ever written in any of his 'verses...I love the chemistry between them. She's such a cold, hard b!t(h, and he's a loveable goofball wearing Hawaiian shirts, and it just WORKS. Wash himself describes it best in one episode: "Not everybody gets me & Zoe at first glance..."

Inara is a bit of a mystery - - she's the Companion, she rents and lives/works in one of the two shuttles on Serenity. Companion is a gentle term for "whore", which is legal, and even a respected profession, in the future. But she has some secrets of her own, that we really didn't get to explore in the series. Much speculation about her...and of course, there is much, much yummy angst and sexual tension between she & Mal. He despises her profession and looks down on it, but is (unadmittedly) in love with her...good stuff, I think it's what Joss does best.

And Jayne - the thug, the hired mercenary, he works for the highest bidder, no real loyalty to anyone and a threat in his own right. He's one of those that you just love to hate and hate to love - - brilliant character!

Sorry, didn't mean to turn this into a character analysis...I just really adore this 'verse and these characters! But without saying too much...just watch the pilot episode, and I bet you'll be hooked at the end of those 90 minutes! ;)

BluecanaryLite--i would STRONGLY suggest that you head out to your local video store and rent the whole season of "Firefly" before you see "Serenity" in theatres. there is an important backstory that you will miss--and you need it to understand what's coming in the movie. the movie continues from where the show left off.
i haven't seen it (the movie), but i've read that it continues from the show--so watch the show first. i promise you won't be disappointed.

icekat55--i think you're right that the only real comparison you could make between buffy and firefly's characters is the wash/xander thing. they're both funny and light-hearted. but angel/mal? no way. i always thought angel was too much of a whiner and a brooding boob to be a great character. and mal has so much more pizazz and spunk and is just all around a better character.
but you've seen "serenity" already????
*seething with jealousy*
it goes without saying that spoilers come upon penalty of death, right? ;)

I agree, and also highly recommend that everyone watch the series before seeing the movie - - however, it's not completely necessary, in order to understand the movie. Joss does a brilliant job, in the first 10 minutes, of explaining the backstory of Earth That Was, and who the characters are, individually and in relation to each other. I was concerned that would be tricky, but he pulled it off, beautifully. And the plot of the movie stands alone, with no major references to the series (just little tiny things that the fans will catch, here & there)

but angel/mal? no way. i always thought angel was too much of a whiner and a brooding boob to be a great character. and mal has so much more pizazz and spunk and is just all around a better character.
Again, I agree.

Interesting point - - Nathan Fillion (who plays Mal) actually auditioned for the role of Angel, waaaaay back before the Buffy series started up. He didn't make it very far through auditions, though, and didn't get to meet Joss at that point. And I'm glad he didn't...'cause I just can't picture anyone else as Malcolm Reynolds! :D

but you've seen "serenity" already????

Yes, I was one of the lucky ones who got to see it in Atlanta! But no worries - - you won't hear a whisper of a spoiler from me. I am SO glad that I wasn't spoiled for this movie...it made the OMG! moments so much better, not knowing what was coming.

Oh yeah...I most definitely and highly recommend staying 100% spoiler free for this movie. All I will say is that it's a he!! of a rollercoaster ride!!!

IceKat, I read character descriptions on a Firefly website, but yours are so much better. I'm really interested in the characters now!
Mal actually sounds a bit like Buffy in that he lost his faith and she was a reluctant Slayer. Does that make sense? It's a tenuous connection, but I guess my point is that they are both on journies to "find themselves", it sounds like.
Jayne also sounds quite a bit like Spike too in that you can't trust him.
I'm glad though that there aren't many very strong parrallels between the Buffy characters and those of Firefly.

Oh, and I'm downloading the first three episodes of Firefly as we speak. I'm looking forward to watching them!

katsumi - I never liked Angel either! All he did was brood. I was so disappointed when he came back in the third season.

BluecanaryLite--well if you've seen all the episodes of Buffy (and if your Firefly episodes aren't finished downloading yet) you'll notice (or perhaps you have already noticed) that Mal is the same evil priest from Buffy, Caleb. there's something about the sweet southern drawl that is the same, and it can be unsettling if you've seen him as Caleb first (which i did).
but you grow to love him as mal.
i don't know if i could say i have a favourite character from Firefly. on Buffy it was spike. he made just about every single episode he was in that much more worth watching. but Firefly? they're all so interesting and funny in their own ways.
i'd probably have to say Mal, though. with jayne every now and then running a close second. chripse he's funny!

To my knowledge, this is the only show that has as a foundation that we are alone in the universe. Everything about the show is about the expansion of the human race into the universe. In my book, that alone makes for an awsome concept.

IceKat,

You were at the screening in Atlanta on May 26? I was in that crowd too! It was such a great experience! As the movie is best view unspoiled, I won't say anything about it. But I will say that it was awesome! I can't wait to see it again in September with the music and all the effects in place. It'll be incredible. Even without being completely finished it was incredible!

Good character analyses, by the way. Couldn't have said it better myself. I love all things Whedon, and I have to say I think Firefly/Serenity is my favorite 'verse.

Oh yeah...I most definitely and highly recommend staying 100% spoiler free for this movie. All I will say is that it's a he!! of a rollercoaster ride!!!

Nice! :D I really cannot wait to see this movie. All the impressions from out of the preview screenings have ranged from good to extremely positive.

September can't come soon enough!

There have actually been a few quite negative reviews of Serenity bouncing round the net. I wouldn't really care all that much, as I know I will love it, if it weren't for the fact that sequels depend on quite a few people going to see it. I hope that these people are the minority and not the majority in terms of possible viewers.

The one major negative review (lee's movie reviews or something like that) was made by a complete idiot who thought his screening was the complete version and ragged on the visual effects and the music, both of which are still unfinished. I used to be a critic for a newspaper, and if I had seen this movie as a critic (not as a Browncoat) I would have still loved it. I went into the movie as a critic because I just can't turn that off now, and saw a few things I hope they tweak a little, but overall the movie is completely incredible. The dialogue is just as funny, sharp, and intelligent as the show. The actors obviously settled into their roles quite well, kind of like putting on your favorite outfit after not wearing it for awhile. Jayne, in particular, played really well on the big screen. As did Mal. Well, all of them did, actually. And fans of the series definately get some payoff. That's all I'm gonna say. The movie is like a roller coaster ride from start to finish. Like the best kind of ride, that when you get off the thing, you get right back in line and do it again. (like the Superman ride at Six Flags, which my best friend and I rode 4 times in a row once, lol) I'm actually anxious to see it again because it was such a great experience. September is too far away!

IceKat, that's so cool that we were both in Atlanta. Are you a member of the Southeastern Browncoats? I just joined them. And I'm helping with the Browncoat Ball at Dragon*Con this year. I'm really excited about that. I wish I lived in Atlanta. I'm over 5 hours away, but I'd drive that far to see my favorite heroes! I've never been to a Con before, but I think it's going to be a blast. Are you going?

Oh yes, I'll be there! I went last year, it was my first Con ever...quite an experience! Nathan and Adam were hilarious (Jewel was very sweet as well, but she could hardly get a word in edgewise between those two!), and it'll be awesome to have more of the cast here this year as well!

If you haven't already gotten your D*C tickets, or booked a room, I highly recommend you go ahead & do it...hotels fill up fast around that weekend, and the ticket prices go up every couple of months. :)

I know there are some Browncoats here, because I've chatted with you recently. This is news you'll want to know... Well, I can't make it to the June 23 screening, but I wanted to inform all of you about them so maybe you'll get to go instead! Go to http://cantstopthesignal.com/ to see where the screenings will be and to purchase tickets. There are 35 cities in the US so yours might be one of them! A word of advice, the tix go on sale tonight at midnight and will probably be sold out about 10 minutes later, so try to get them tonight if you can. Otherwise, you're stuck getting them on ebay for lots of money! Have fun!

I was wondering if any of you Browncoats could give me some information here. I just read the latest issue of TV Guide, and they were talking about a Serenity comic coming out on July 6 "The three-part comic serves as a bridge between the series and the upcoming movie"
So, does that mean I should pick the three issues up (in case I miss something)? I live in the town where Dark Horse Comics has it's headquarters, so it's not like I'd have to go out of my way to find them.
Does any one have more information on this?

I went to my cousin's wedding a year or so ago, and I sat at a table with some people who either were the casting agents for the movie, or knew the casting agents--and they were not surprised in the least when I told them I could name 10 people off the top who would sleep on the street for a week to go to the premier of the movie. There is something about Firefly that caught people's imagination.
Mental, indeed :p

Just found this thread and as a devoted Joss Wedon enthusiast, I had to comment on this one.

I first saw Nathan Fillion years ago as Joey Buchannan on One Life to Live, a soap opera that I used to watch - when I watched soaps. When I saw him on Buffy, I couldn't believe it. I had just got the Firefly box about that time and had a real treat. He has such a fun style that he is unforgettable. As Mal, he is brilliant. I am always happy when I see old soap faves make good in movies. I remember Meg Ryan for example... but that is a different thread.

I think my favorite character has got to be River. She is so out there. I also loved seeing Summer Glau on Angel. She was great. She is so spontaneous on Firefly. I hope that they don't kill her off in the movie. I will be really upset if they do.

Fair warning, because I'm sure to feel guilty otherwise, but I get a few points on The Official Fan Site (http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com/serenity/?u=TaraBrady) for every clickthrough on those links, so if that makes you feel used, you can just google it, instead.

I'm proud to say that the Browncoat and CoS boards are the only boards I visit (with a vengeance!). What a lovely corner of the world this thread is!

I've only been a flan for a few months, but it feels like years as I've watched the eps so many times. :o) I love the ensemble that the cast creates. I enjoy each of the characters, but they are so much more within the context of the show.

I saw the Serenity preview in Minneapolis today on the big screen before Batman Begins (shivers) and I'm going to see the screening this Thursday (wonder and awe). I am eternally devoted to a fellow Mpls browncoat who is selling me her extra ticket at cost. I'm going to shower her with chocolate and popcorn at the show! My fingers are still cramped from all that fruitless refreshing, and after ending my post-refresh days of mourning, she is definitely one of my BDHs.

Joss is boss. JKR is chairwoman of the board.

I just rented the entire season of Firefly (the downloading was taking WAY too long) and watched it all in a week, and I am SO excited about the movie now!
It's so frustrating that they didn't even get to finish the season though. I'm looking forward to seeing what's up with the blue-handed guys. Also, to seeing what happens with Mal and Inara. Also, what's up with Shepherd Book?
I CANNOT WAIT to see the movie! I'm giddy!

Some general thoughts:
1) I LOVE the concept of the mix of cultures and the fusion between the past and the future. It makes it all so much more real than a typical SciFi show. Joss sure love genre bending and it works great with this show.
2) Joss has a sick, sick mind. The Reevers (sp?), that guy who enjoyed toturing people, the hands of blue guys with their sticks that made people bleed to death... all so very creepy! Ugh! It's all brilliant though.
3) Companions are very much like geisha (only geisha didn't have sex with their clients).
4) Watching Buffy, I had a crush on most of the major male characters at one time or another. Except for Angel. So at first I was disappointed that Firefly didn't have any really handsome actors. I mean, Mal's okay, but he's not dreamy. And Simon is almost good-looking, but his eyes are a bit too small and his chin is a bit too big. But as I watched the show both characters appealed to me more and more. If it had beena full season, I'm sure I would have had a crush on Mal by the end. The characters are written in such an appealing way that they literally make me fall in love with them.

I think Jaynestown was probably my favourite episode. It was hilarious.

And fans of the series definately get some payoff. That's all I'm gonna say

Mmmmm...Nathan Fillion...

I love my Captain!!

Interesting tidbit: Nathan actually auditioned for the role of Angel, back when the Buffy series was first starting up!

And ooooooh, yes, I LOVED him as the creepy Caleb!! At Dragon*Con here in Atlanta last Sept, he actually did a few lines for us, in his Caleb voice. That man could be a stand-up comic and make a very good living...he's a RIOT!

I think Jaynestown was probably my favourite episode. It was hilarious.
One of my faves as well. I adore Adam in that one...the depth he brings to Jayne in the end scene, as he & Mal are talking in the cargo bay. The utter confusion on his face as he struggles to understand why the Mudders were willing to die for him...brilliant!!

I have a question for people who saw the movie: how much does it rehash the show?
It doesn't, really. It certainly helps to know & understand the characters from the series, but it's not necessary to follow the movie. Joss does an incredible job of recapping the important highlights from the show (like the backstory of Earth That Was and River's escape from the Academy) as well as introducing the characters in a way that's not repetitive for fans, all in the first 10 minutes. And he does one of those long, sweeping shots through the entire ship that is just gorgeous...from the bridge, along the passage by the crews bunks, through the kitchen and back to the engine room, then downstairs into the infirmary and cargo bay. It introduces the movie audience to Serenity as well. LOVE it!! :)

Yes. Welcome to my world. The cancellation of Firefly is the reason I will never watch another F*x show, ever again. Providing, of course, that they don't bring the series back.
In the special features on the DVD, one guy (I guess he was one of the producers or someone) said his fantasy was that the movie would be such a big hit that someone would come to them and say, "why don't we make a TV show out of Serenity?"
Also, in the interviews, Ron Glass laughed a lot. It was funny.
The fact that Fox cancelled Firefly only solidifies their evilness in my opinion.

Oh, and I think I may have missed something, but what exactly is the backstory of Earth-that-was? Is it the civil war? Or was there something more Earth-specific that I missed?
Oh, and is Wash from Earth? Cuz he talked about being from a planet so polluted that he couldn't see the stars, and I thought that might have been earth.
I was also wondering: Is Saffron/Bridget/Yolanda in the movie? And is Badger?

And, I loved the theme song.

I guess you watched the DVDs, right? There were some deleted scenes that I liked. The one where Zoe is describing the battle of Serenity Valley, or more specifically when she says, "Once you've been in Serenity, you never leave. You just learn to live there". That was a really good line. And the scene where River wanted to marry Simon was odd, but funny. I cracked up when she said, "I'm in the family way".

And I just watched the trailer again, and Shepherd Book isn't in the movie, is he? Cuz they didn't show him at all.

I have a google alert out for Serenity and get news every day about the movie. Just in case you didn't know, starting the middle of July, Firefly will be on three shows a night every weekend. So, anyone who doesn't own the box set can watch all episodes.

Also, new news about Wonder Woman. It appears that Marena Baccarin will be cast in the role. I was hoping for Alysson Hannigan, but I guess Joss is not seeing the campy side of Wonder Woman. As I grew up when the TV show was on, I thought that it would be fun to go beyond the comic book portrayal. :elaugh: But I am happy the there will be a wonderful actress in the role...not that I ever doubted Joss. Anyway, here's the newslink.

Wash isn't from Earth - - as I understand it, Earth That Was has been gone for a long, long, long time...much longer than Wash has been alive.

When the series originally aired, there was a 'recap' at the beginning of each episode...it was Mal's voice, telling the story.

Mal: “Here's how it is. Earth got used up, so, we moved out, and terraformed a whole new galaxy of Earths. Some, rich and flush with the new technologies; some, not so much. The central planets, them as formed the Alliance, waged war to bring everyone under their rule. A few idiots tried to fight it; among them, myself.

I'm Malcolm Reynolds, Captain of Serenity. She's a transport ship, Firefly class. Got a good crew: fighters, pilot, mechanic. We even picked up a preacher, for some reason, and a bona fide Companion. There's a doctor, too. Took his genius sister out of some Alliance camp, so they're keeping a low profile. You understand. You got a job, we can do it. Don't much care what it is.”
I seem to remember that the story of Earth That Was is included in the Heart of Gold script. When Mal & Inara have a talk with Rance at the theatre, there's a shadow-skit going on in the background - it's the story. I'll see if I can find the script -

I was also wondering: Is Saffron/Bridget/Yolanda in the movie? And is Badger?

And, I loved the theme song.
No Badger, no YoSafBridge, and no theme song in the movie.

And I just watched the trailer again, and Shepherd Book isn't in the movie, is he? Cuz they didn't show him at all.
Never fear...he's in the movie. All 9 cast members are, and all 9 are signed on for any sequels that may come along. :)

Anyway, here's the newslink.

http://www.canmag.com/news/4/3/1403
So Joss is doing Wonder Woman? I had heard about that, but I didn't know that it had been confirmed.

Wash isn't from Earth - - as I understand it, Earth That Was has been gone for a long, long, long time...much longer than Wash has been alive.

When the series originally aired, there was a 'recap' at the beginning of each episode...it was Mal's voice, telling the story. yeah, they cut that out of the DVDs.

AICN is reporting that one of the Serenity screenings featured Joss Whedon himself. (last night?) So did anyone by chance go to see the screening at the Edwards Jurupa 14-plex in Riverside, Calif. If you did, anything interesting occur with Joss there?

Joss was, indeed, at the Riverside screening. He answered several questions (all of them movie spoiler related) and signed autographs.

And Nathan Fillion was in Phoenix, gorramit all!!! :upset:

The final BDH appearance tally:

Boston, MA: Loni Peristere
Riverside, LA: Joss Whedon
Charlotte, NC: Chris Buchanan
Phoenix, AZ: Nathan Fillion
Miami, FL: Gina Torres
Vancouver, BC, CA: Jewel Staite
Houston, TX: Summer Glau
Toronto, ON, CA: Sean Maher
New Jersey, NY: Morena Baccarin
Indianapolis, IN: Ron Glass

The comic (IMO) is really good...it flows along just like an episode of Firefly, it's got the same feel as the series did.

One of the towns surrounding Ottawa. We only ever get the movies with huge budgets or that are based on really popular IPs. So unless something changes, I doubt I'll be able to see the movie at any theater without driving a few hours.

And I just don't like comics, so my viewpoint on the comicbook is probably a little skewed.

Try calling your local theatres and speaking with the managers, ask them if they're going to be getting Serenity, and if not (or if they don't know), press them on it. Not sure how that whole deal works, but it's worth a shot!

But, having seen the movie, I can honestly say that it's 100% worth a few hours drive...one of the best movies EVER. :)

Actually, you can thank the lack of viewers for that. Most people who like the show only started liking it after it was cancelled.

TaraBrady
July 19th, 2005, 5:08 am
That's not entirely true. We can thank Fox for the lack of viewers. There are people who didn't like it when they first saw it on Fox, but did on DVD, but there are far more who had never even heard of it when it was on the air - Fox's fault for not promoting it more. I had friends who were rabid 24 fans at the time who had no clue when Firefly was even on.

Also, most of the people who saw it on the air and didn't like it were turned off by the first episode Fox showed, 'The Train Job,' which was not really the pilot. They were confused, because they missed out on all the backstory. (Incidentally, why did they keep referring to River as 'a girl in a box' in the early promos when they had no intention of showing the pilot until January, if at all?)

It's usually the show's fault. I mean, I can blame Fox all I want for cancelling Wonderfalls, but deep down I know it was just too weird for network TV. In this case, though, it really was Fox's fault the show didn't fly. Firefly was just plain mishandled!

And as Tara said, we can thank F*x for the lack of viewers.

They were handed a gem of a story by Joss Whedon, and they: A) put it in the commonly-known-as "Time Slot of Death" (Fridays at 9 pm); B) stuffed up promotion/marketing of the show, because they simply didn't "get it"; C) canned the pilot episode and then showed the other episodes all out of order (airing the Pilot LAST, hello, what were they thinking??), thus confusing the audience/potential audience; D) pre-empted the show for baseball; and E) cancelled it without giving it a legitimate chance (ie, giving it time to find it's audience or moving it to a more decent night/slot).

And Heaven knows that Firefly was not the only show to suffer such a fate at the hands of this incompetant network. Yeah. F*x is run by a flock of sheep stuffed into suits, far as I'm concerned.

[/bitter rant] :p

In this case, though, it really was Fox's fault the show didn't fly. Firefly was just plain mishandled!

Listen, I'm a really big fan, too, but that's really weird.

In the trailer, the scenes ranged from "really nice" to "bad television special effects". Or maybe it's just my eyes, I don't know. Same with the dialogue. I just don't think it translates well to the big screen.

Trust us, man - it does. Seriously, totally, absolutely does. Watching a trailer on a computer screen just can't compare to the actual film.

IceKat and Hedwig, I don't think you're weird! You've got to understand, some of us have been clamouring for this movie ever since the last ep aired on Fox. TaraBrady, I'm one of those people you are talking about. I send postcards while the show was on, begging FOX not to cancel. I sent a letter about the DVD set. No problem! I just wanted to tell you how deeply involved (and therefore, very strange) I was (well, am... lol) I really am looking forward to the release of the movie. Can't wait to see it complete, though I enjoyed the unfinished version very much!

As for dissecting, I don't do that too much, I mostly post on the General board and the Other Sci Fi board on the Serenity site. I've posted in the Ive Seen Serenity board too, quite a bit. Mostly in defence of Whedon's genius!

Harry Potter is more fun to dissect. So much going on and so much we don't yet know. Not that those elements are not present in Firefly/Serenity, but HP is just so much bigger in scope (with 7 books and movies, etc.) I dont' know where I was trying to go with this, so I"m going to stop now. lol

I'm sure we got your request. Did we not grant it? You know what happened? My friend and I were so depressed when they cancelled the show that we gave up the Keeper duties. If your request was after the cancellation, we probably never wrote you back. I'm sorry! I've been thinking about starting it back up again since Sci-Fi is airing the episodes. Think we would get some new requests?
I have NO doubt of it! The buzz over this little movie has been phenominal!!

Oh, and I'd like to re-stake my claim on the Captain's Green Apple, should you start the Keeperships back up! :D

Okay Browncoats - - here's the update - -

FoxMusic.Publishing@fox.com

We need to attack, en masse, and let Fox know that we WANT a Firefly soundtrack. Judging by the response from La La Land Records, they are willing and able; and I've just gotten word from Greg Edmonson's agent - - they, too, are willing and able. It's up to the folks at Fox.

With the BDMovie less than 2 months away, the original episodes being re-aired on the Sci-Fi channel, and the DVD sets currently selling quite well, it seems like an ideal time for Fox to strike with a Firefly soundtrack...they need to hear us!

Everyone please take a moment and send them a note to the email address above (Do you have multiple email accounts? All the better!!) Keep it short and sweet, just let them know that you'd be very interested in purchasing music from the television series Firefly.

Browncoats are nothing if not determined. We get what we want by making LOTS of noise. So...? Who's with me? :eyebrows:

I'm with you, fellow Browncoats!!! I just found this thread and love absolutely everyone on it--what amazing taste everyone has, obviously.

I saw a screening of Serenity in Northern California a few months ago and am going crazy, dying to see it again....and many more agains. Still, I think I must be the only one who is even slightly aware of the GENIUS OF JOSS WHEDON and his Serenity/Firefly (officially the only TV series that I've cried while watching) in my area.
Is there more press/awareness where all of you are?

Excuse me, I need to go drool over Captain Tightpants and our Hero of Jaynestown now. ;)

Firefly has got to be one of the BEST series ever created... why it got axed, I don't know! I'm in Australia by the way... my dad got the series from a friend overseas... and I love it. I've seen the trailer for Serenity and am absolutely dying to see it!

Unfortunately, there is not that much awareness where I am. I used to work at a college newspaper and then at a community newspaper here in South Alabama, though, and the weekend of the release, I plan to write and submit articles to both papers about the show, the movie, the screenings, and the fan anticipation. I'm sure they will print them because they are always dying for material. Hopefully this will bring more people to the theaters.

Which, I've already seen three times...but still, it was SO shiny to see that footage again!

Over at SerenityMovie.com (http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com/serenity/index.html?fuseaction=tools.invlink&u=KelKat1&linkID=36), they've got some new clips in the A/V room, they're showing Serenity footage in theatres during "The Twenty" now!

Boy, where has this thread been?

The Signal has a new episode up. This week they've got a new segment on the science of Firefly and an exclusive interview with composer Greg Edmonson. Last week they had a great exclusive interview with Ron Glass, which was a lot of fun, as were their chats with Gina and Adam. Check them out!

Guess what, Browncoats? I saw the new(er) Serenity trailer attached to "The Skeleton Key" this weekend. There were lots of people in the theater, and they laughed at all the appropriate moments! I was so proud! After the preview was over, there were murmurings all over the theater that sounded positive. I definately heard someone behind me say "that looks awesome."

Yay!

It makes me angry because people use it so much, not because I keep associating it with Mussolini. I know Benito Mussolini had brownshirts and not browncoats, but it still sticks with me. That doesn't mean I don't like the show, though.

eh. We just say Browncoats because that's the name of Mal's side in the war, and that's what we call ourselves as fans. It has nothing to do with anything else. It's just a funny name that we use to identify ourselves. Joss even called us that in his pre-screening video (which I hope is on the DVD)

It's just a word.

Welcome to the crew! Don't worry, there will be other movies (I'm sure of it!) so we can all be Browncoats for many years to come!

The movie is awesome! I can't wait to hear the opinions of people who are new fans or who haven't been able to see it yet. Sept. 30 can't come soon enough!

Oh, and they played my second favorite episode last Friday. "Shindig" is so funny! Just wait for the episode called "Out of Gas." It's a favorite of many Browncoats because of its unique nonlinear style. It's really beautiful.

I MET ALAN TUDYK!!!! *whirls happily*

We went to New York City this past weekend and saw him in Spamalot (HI-LARIOUS!!!), and then got to meet Alan on Friday night and Saturday night. He is SO sweet, very genuine, and was so pleased that we had seen Serenity and loved it. I got him to sign my playbill:
"I'm a leaf on the wind..."

It really is! And hey...I'm not nuts! :p

Alan was so happy when we told him we'd seen the movie...you could just see his face brighten. And he was SO blue that he wasn't able to go with the rest of the cast to Edinburgh. Gina was there for the Saturday afternoon Spamalot performance, we got to see her going in & out the backstage door (the woman is GORGEOUS) before she hugged Alan goodbye & took off, presumably for Edinburgh. We cheered and yelled for her, she looked really surprised that anyone had recognized her! ;)

Alan did say that Ron Glass and Nathan Fillion (did I mention ??) had been out to see him in Spamalot as well. I love how they support each other, and are clearly very close-knit.

Okay - - has everyone seen the Serenity viral marketing clips that are going around? Universal claims they know nothing about it...perhaps Joss is behind this? And if Joss is doing this on his own...he's more of a genius than I could EVER have imagined!!!

These clips are SO COOL...the Session One Excerpt shows River as we've never seen her, pre-academy, a normal girl...it's kinda sad, especially seeing how she ends up in Session 416, and knowing what they do to her at the academy.

NO Serenity spoilers included!

Covert Serenity Promo Afoot?

Two short film clips have appeared online that may be the beginning of a viral marketing campaign for the upcoming SF film Serenity, based on the short-lived FOX TV series Firefly. The first film clip, which features a title card reading "R. Tam, Session 416, Second Excerpt" was posted on the iFilm Web site on Aug. 16. It features a man who appears to be choking, followed by a brief appearance by Summer Glau, who plays a character named River Tam in the film.

A second clip, labeled "Session 1 Excerpt," was discovered on Aug. 23 and shows more of Glau being interviewed by a man possibly portrayed by Serenity writer/director Joss Whedon himself, with clear references to characters, situations and places mentioned in Firefly. The existence of the second clip was revealed on various Firefly fan groups and message boards by a poster using the name "John Dowses" which, as noted by several fans, is an anagram for Joss Whedon.

A representative from Universal, the studio releasing the film, told SCI FI Wire that she had no knowledge about the origin of the footage. Universal is owned by NBC Universal, which also owns SCIFI.COM. Serenity opens Sept. 30.

Yeah, they're pretty cool. I was thinking of linking to one in my sig, to help explain who River is (I've been getting questions) but session one doesn't really explain much, and session 416 is a little intense, I think, to have people linking to it unawares. I'm hoping for a third clip with less of the morbid and more of the creepifying.

 Oh, yeah, 'Versal doesn't know anything about it, right, I believe that...

I don't even know what that is, so knock yourself out. It's what youg get when you say 'firefly fan' three times fast. :elaugh: Apparently, Nathan Fillion mispronounced 'firefly fans' as 'firefly flans' in an interview or appearance or something along those lines, and it stuck.

Well whats especially impresive about the episodes so far, is that usually the first half of the first season is usually the worst episodes of a new series. So if these are the worst episodes, I'd imagine the series would've gotten much better after a season or two. Thats whats amazing

Sorry...I just have to vent every now & then.

I think the worst part, for me, was the fact that Firefly was left with so many loose strings and unanswered questions. But I've seen the movie...and if we get nothing else in the way of the Firefly/Serenity 'verse, then it was a darn fine series finale for Firefly!

Well even if a show isn't at the top of its game at the end, the first 6-10 episodes of the first season are almost always the worst. Buffy, Farscape, Star Trek TNG, Angel even, Definitely the first season of Simpsons, stargate etc. Usually shows are still figuring out what the show is supposed to be during those first episodes. The actors are still figuring out who their characters are. And the budget is usually half as it would become. And I do disagree about shows plumitting into mediocrity, usually by the time they end, they're not their best, but hardly mediocre.

These are so painfully heartbreaking!!

The only thing I actually thought while watching those was "neat advertising idea".

I also want to know what kind of name is "River". I mean, come on, were her parents hippies?

TaraBrady
August 25th, 2005, 10:32 pm
I doubt it. I don't think that a pair of Hippies could ever manage to raise a guy like Simon. :elaugh:

Kaylee's real first name is 'Kaywinnit' (I have no idea how it's actually spelled,) so it's possible that River and Kaywinnit are both relatively common girl's name in the Firefly 'verse. It's set 500 years in the future and they all speak Chinese, so they could have come up with some new things to call their kids, too. I mean, the name 'Wendy' was made up for the Peter Pan books, and now it's a perfectly acceptable thing to call your kids.

I don't think any other name could fit her as well, really.

I think the clips are a lot of fun. They give Summer (Summer? Are her parents hippies, too?) a chance to show off her chops, and give us some more of the River background we've been clamouring for.

That last clip was just amazing. No wonder segment 416 ended the way it did.

Hedwig76
August 26th, 2005, 2:56 am
You know, I've actually considered Kaylee as a name if I ever have a girl. It's pretty and spunky, you know?

And I'm writing a book and the heroine's name is Summer. And I decided this before I knew what Summer's name was. And I'm not a hippie. lol

But anyway, I like the names of the characters in Firefly/Serenity. They fit the characters very well.

What part of AL are you in? Are you coming over to Atlanta for Dragon*Con?

There's a screening next Wednesday night, here in Atl...I believe it starts at 6:00, I've got passes, if you're interested in attending. :)

ETA, I began reading your Brothers Grimm review, but stopped pretty quickly...does it have spoilers? I LOVE Terry Gilliam (and pretty much anything Monty Python), so this movie is on the top of my list...I'll hopefully be seeing it tomorrow night. :)

Hedwig76
August 28th, 2005, 3:28 am
The review is not too spoilery, just a little about something that happens in the very beginning, but after that, I tried not to reveal too much. The movie was pretty good. A lot of fun. Lots of very strange stuff, but ultimately good to see. I love Monty Python too, and you can see the influence in this movie.

Anyway, to answer your question, I'm in the most southern portion of the state, in Mobile. I was supposed to go to Dragon*Con, but the friend I was going to go with got a new job and can't get the time off. Maybe next year, huh? Anyway, I'm not going to be too upset about, since the people I would most want to meet (Nathan, Sean, and Joss) are not going to be there. I wish I could make the screening on Wednesday, but alas, I must work. :(

For future reference, you can feel reasonably confident that any of my reviews will avoid being too spoilery. And if I must venture into spoil territory, I will always give the proper warnings.

 Not only are they all there, they're reportedly all signed for two sequels. And if I'm doing my math right, by the time they're done with those, Fox's 10 year moratorium on a new series in the Firefly Universe will have expired. What, me, blindly optimistic? Never!

You guys, it's September 2. The movie comes out September 30. As in, in less than a month! Squeeee!!!!

Hey, Hedwig, your link isn't working in my browser. I get an 'invalid URL' error. I didn't try in IE, but it makes Firefox and Opera cranky.

It looks like you've opened your href tag twice. If the code in your sig begins with <a href="http://<A href=, cut out everything before the second < and it should work better.

Just thought I'd pop in without reading anyone elses posts. ^^

Yesterday I was at the movies and the trailer started playing, at first I didn't know what it was until I saw Captain Malchom, then it started ramping up quickly and gave me the tingles.
I'll have my ticket on the day it comes out here, I was a big fan of Firefly when it was on TV here so a movie based on it will be cool.

Im happy its having a somewhat advertised release, it could easily have been blindsided by the publisher like many other great movies.
