Personality Types and Harry Potter

Hello everyone!

We were having a discussion about the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator and the Harry Potter characters over in the Deconstructing The Marauders V.8 (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=44404) thread in the History of Magic. The MBTI (Myer-Briggs Type Indicator) is a personality test that places people into 16 categories based on introverted/extroverted, sensing/intuiting, feeling/thinking, and perceivng/judging. We were discussing whether or not the personality types people have would go along with liking certain characters more than others. I never was a big believer in these tests until we discussed them on Deconstructing the Marauders. The last thing I expected was to find myself with the same profile as Snape, according to the Pirate Monkey site. Yet, I also discovered that some of my favorite posters and best friends have the same personality type.

I think I'm nicer and more sympathetic than Snape - my children might disagree, lol. :evil:

I know that Madame Trelawney appeals to me because she is such a mess. She is the way I would be if I let myself go, lol. But I can't let myself fall apart like that, you know? :rotfl: Luna may be an INTJ, too, as she is very opinionated and likes to express herself. Also, she is an introvert, but so is Madame Trelawney. I don't know - they both make me laugh.

I hope you'll compile a chart when this thread gets older, Chiev. It would be fascinating.

I'm an ENFJ, I took the test a while ago so I don't know the exact percentages for each area, except that I know I'm 13% judging.

In general, i really dont like these quizzes at all. True they are supposed to be accurate, and i did feel that it described my personality to some extent, but quite a few of the questions are quite vague and unclear in their meaning. Many questions I really didnt want to answer 'yes' or 'no' to because in truth, I was a little bit of both.
According the the pirates monkey quiz i am a INTJ(severus snape). But considering that they even have a personality type for Madam hooch, who in truth we have only glimpsed a few times in the books, personally I'll take that version of the quiz with a grain of salt.

Intoverted means a low level of sociability, in other words, you'd rather stay home and read HP than go out to a party and socialise with friends. It can also refer to your levels of positive emotions, warmth towards others and how well you work in groups. (I'm a psych student). The other three are kinda self-explanatary, you need to check the score you returned with the maximum possible score, if they tell you.


Oh and for those who returned extraversion scores, it is the opposite of introverted.

There's a link to the personality test being used for this thread in the first post--it's a slightly longer version of the Pirate Monkey test and (hopefully) more accurate. We're trying to correlate peoples' personalities with their favorite characters, so I'm asking everyone to list their two favorite characters in addition to their personality type scores.

I read somewhere that INTs (either Js or Ps) are wildly over-represented on the internet in general...probably because they are (usually) technologically sophisticated, and they find it more comfortable to interact with others at a distance and in the kind of pre-sorted populations found on the net.

Finally, the answer we’ve all been waiting for! How much does our personality type predict which Harry Potter characters we like? This is the first analysis (the results so far). :)

First a few general observations: Thanks to all who have participated, so far! :clap: If you would like to participate, please take the test here (http://www.humanmetrics.com/cgi-win/JTypes2.asp) and post the results along with your 2 favorite characters from Harry Potter. Some people didn’t list their favorite characters, so I couldn’t include them. I don’t have time to OWL everyone, but if you want to be included and didn’t list your favorite characters the first time, reply to your first post and list your 2 favorite characters in the reply. I'll include you at the next analysis (if this thread lasts long enough. :lol: ) Of all the personality types, most people responding were INFJ (19 posters), INTJ (17 posters), INFP (10 posters), ISTJ (8 posters), ISFJ (7 posters) and ESFP (7 posters). There are a lot of introverts here! Because the numbers for each category are still pretty low, these predictions may not be the most accurate, as of now. I used an online calculator for the 95% confidence intervals, found in parentheses next to each percentage of people liking a certain character. This means that there is a 95% chance that the true percentage of people who like a certain character is within the range given in the parentheses. As more people respond, the size of the range should get smaller. The Pirate Monkey personality quiz character correlations are listed after the number of posters. I doubt the validity of some of the character correlations from this quiz, though, since there are some characters listed who we don't see very much of.

As of now the strongest correlation is that INFJ's will like Remus Lupin and INTJ's will like Severus Snape.

The funny thing about this was, I took this test about a month ago, and I turned out to be Sirius Black. But about three months before that I really had no interest in Sirius what so ever. And then I started taking some quizes : Which Marauder are you most like? Which older HP character should you marry? Who's your HP family?

All of this kind of stuff. Of course I was happy when some of my answers to questions turned out to be Ron (my all time FAV character), but I was also getting Sirius Black - ALOT!! And I didn't get it. I never really thought of Sirius at all, and I had to go back to the books and read more. And the more I read, the more I liked him, well the way he was in Hogwarts. OH if I was at Hogwarts with Sirius Black .... :drool: ..... :love: ..... :eyebrows: .... well you get the point.

But anyways, when I did this personalility test, it really helped explain WHY I like Sirius, he is sooooooo like me! It's a really cool test, I got my mom to do it even tho she knows nothing about HP, she agreed with her results tho and I was rolling around laughing. My mom is Draco Malfoy! HA! :lol:

Since all the traits are on a scale (everyone has some of each), it may be that your intuitive and sensing traits are well balanced. I'm not sure I agree with the test, though. I think that you can be and thinking and a feeling person at the same time. I've always thought of myself as a highly thoughtful person.

I am an ENFJ, and my favorite characters, respectively, are Dumbledore and Harry.

I tend to teeter between "feeling" and "thinking" on these tests. "Feeling" is important, but useless to good purpose without "thinking".

Hmm, might be interesting to try a regression analysis with each dimension (E/I,N/S,F/T,J/P) separately as explanatory variable for liking a character. For example:

Snape = aE + bN + cF + dJ

where value of E, N, F, J would be the "weight" from test (with minus sign if I,S,T,P instead) and a, b, c, d coefficents provided by regression...

Is this getting too serius now? You know, my copy of HBP still hasn't arrived, and I'm desperately looking for HP related stuff to do to ease the anxiety. I might give this a try this evening...

Ok, I did some analysis with different method (as I mentionned earlier). I tried to study the relationships between character-liking and the separate dimensions of the personality types. I think that some interesting observations can be made in addition to those already presented. Some basic info about method:

From information in this thread, I put into a table the %weights of each personality dimension and favourite characters.
Variables E, N, F, J got the positive % weight values if the respondent's personality was in that side of the dimension. Otherwise a minus-sign was put before weight. For example: My personality type is INTP with weights 5, 39, 43, 59. The variables then got values E=-0.05, N=0.39, F=-0.43, J=-0.59.
If the respondent did not give the weights, the response was not included in the calculations.
Also excluded were responses where no favourite characters were specified, or it was not possible to identify less than 4 favourites (I allowed maximum 4 even if most posters gave only 2 as requested).
After this, there were total of 135 valid responses.


I made simple correlations as well as some attempts of regression analysis. Regression analysis basically tries to explain liking of a character by each personality dimension. I also used an intercept, which can be interpreted as "general popularity" of the character, not affected by personality type of the fan.

Analysis on 12 most popular characters follows. Note that I use only positive values for coefficients; when the regression/correlation resulted in negative value, I replaced the variable with its counterpart (i.e. E->I, N->S, F->T, J->P) in presentation.

Remus Lupin
Simple correlations with personality type dimensions: I: 0.187 * N: 0.045 * F: 0.291 * J: 0.136
Regression Model: Lupin = 0.20 + 0.26 I + 0.41 F + 0.16 J (R-square=0.185)

With regression analysis, we get statistically very significant results that Introvert and Feeling personalities explain liking of Lupin. Judging also seems to have some effect, but with this sample size, we cannot say for sure yet. There is no evidence that Intuitive-Sensing dimension would make any difference. So, INFJs and ISFJs are likely to form the fan-base for Lupin.

Harry Potter
Simple correlations with personality type dimensions: E: 0.051 * S: 0.215 * F: 0.170 * P: 0.015
Regression Model: Harry = 0.31 + 0.22 S + 0.13 F (R-square=0.065)

The overall ability of the model to explain liking Harry with this data is weak, but the effect of Sensing personality is statistically clearly significant. Feeling type also may have some explanatory value. High value of the intercept suggests that Harry is popular among all groups, which makes sense since he is the main character after all.

Albus Dumbledore
Simple correlations with personality type dimensions: I: 0.146 * N: 0.135 * F: 0.202 * J: 0.114
Regression Model: Dumbledore = 0.12 + 0.18 I + 0.16 N + 0.26 F (R-square=0.106)

Introvert and Feeling personalities quite clearly explain liking Dumbledore. Intuitive may also have effect, though cannot be confirmed. Aside personalities, there seem to be some negative correlation between liking Dumbledore and Hermione (-0.203) or Sirius (-0.234).

Hermione Granger
Simple correlations with personality type dimensions: I: 0.010 * S: 0.054 * T: 0.128 * J: 0.128

Personality types don’t seem to explain liking Hermione in any statistically significant way.

Severus Snape
Simple correlations with personality type dimensions: I: 0.222 * N: 0.168 * T: 0.181 * P: 0.000
Regression Model: Snape = 0.18 + 0.20 I (R-square=0.049)

Liking Snape is only explained by Introvert personality, but there is no doubt on that effect based on statistical significance.

Sirius Black

It looks like Extrovert personality could be a candidate for explaining liking Sirius, but we need a bit more evidence before concluding the case.

Ron Weasley

Ron seems to be liked by rather Extrovert and Perceiving personalities, but in this case also, more evidence is needed.

Luna Lovegood

No conclusions can be made at this stage.

Fred & George Weasley

There’s no doubt, Weasley twins fans are likely to be extroverts.

Draco Malfoy

Regression Model: Draco = 0.16 + 0.16 E + 0.18 T + 0.12 P (R-square=0.179)

If Draco is your favourite, check whether you are ENTP or ESTP. The result looks suspiciously convincing; out of 10 Draco fans there are 3 ENTP, which may be a coincidence (but the statistic indicators are still very strong).

There is an interesting parallel to Lupin, only other character with three statistically significant explanatory personality dimensions (or Lupin has two + one close). Lupin’s fans are the exact opposites (INFJs or ISFJs) to Draco’s.
