I've been checking out Bloomsbury's site daily and this morning the following info was posted.
Book Five

Bloomsbury Publishing Plc

J K Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix to be published on
21st June, 2003 in Britain, the USA, Canada and Australia

The world’s most anticipated book is over one third longer than the previous book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire

London, England; New York, New York; 15th January, 2003: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by J K Rowling, the fifth in the best-selling series, has been scheduled for release on Saturday 21st June, 2003 in Britain, the USA, Canada, Australia and in the English language in many countries, it was announced by the book’s English language publishers, Bloomsbury and Scholastic, to whom it has now been delivered. The companies also announce that Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is over one third longer than J K Rowling's extraordinary previous book, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

In making the joint announcement, Nigel Newton, Chief Executive of Bloomsbury Publishing in Britain and Barbara Marcus, President of Scholastic Children’s Books in the United States said, “We are thrilled to announce the publication date. Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is absolutely superb and will delight all J K Rowling’s fans. She has written a brilliant and utterly compelling new adventure, which begins with the words:

“The hottest day of the summer so far was drawing to a close and a drowsy silence lay over the large, square houses of Privet Drive … The only person left outside was a teenage boy who was lying flat on his back in a flowerbed outside number four.”

Later in the novel, J K Rowling writes:

“Dumbledore lowered his hands and surveyed Harry through his half-moon glasses.

‘It is time,’ he said, ‘for me to tell you what I should have told you five years ago, Harry.

Please sit down. I am going to tell you everything.’”

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is over 255,000 words compared to over 191,000 words in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. The new book is 38 chapters long, one more than Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, J K Rowling’s fourth Harry Potter book, was released on 8th July, 2000 and was the fastest selling book in history on the first weekend of its publication. All four Harry Potter books, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, as well as Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, have been Number 1 bestsellers and are currently on bestseller lists in Britain, the USA, and around the world.

Bloomsbury will be publishing their standard children's hardback edition (ISBN 07475 51 006) and in addition an adult hardback edition (ISBN 07475 69 401, the same text but with a different jacket) at the same time, both editions to be 768 pages long and priced at £16.99.

All time zones preceding the UK are embargoed until 00:01 am BST (British Summer Time) on Saturday 21 June 2003.

I thought that the book might have been released on Harry's birthday but I can't say I'm complaining with the date its coming out now especially the fact that in Australia I'll get it the day you get it in the UK and US. The publishers better get to work quickly they have a lot of copies to make...

I have a problem on bloosmbury. I have registered and want to pre-order the kids hardback copy. It is in my bag but when I clock on "Go To Checkout" it just takes me to a page where I have to enter my e-mai, address and password again. So I do, I click 'OK' and then I am taken back to the registration page. Has anybody been able to pre-order it yet?

No more desperate search for new fanfics or wild rumnours. No more staying blankly at mugglenet.com waiting to Emerson to be using block captials with words such as "BOOK 5, HERE, NUFF SAID!!!", etc. It's is (practiclly) here, so near, so far, and so expensive, but worth every penny. And a third longer than Goblet of Fire. I think I may have to quit college. To heck with A-Levels, no emplyers want those qualifications these day, they look for how many referrals you have at cosforums.com. I am so giddy, hold me Bubble!!! :DHey, mind your languages!!;D

Na, the US edition of GoF was around 700+ pages (I don't live in the US) and so, if OotP is 1/3 longer, that would mean an extra of 230+ pages, which means that the US editon will be close to 1000 pages, which is cool. The UK edition was 634pages, so and extra 211 pages, since it is 1/3 longer than GoF, means that the UK edition would come up to around 845 pages. This is so cool!!!

Also, I pre-order my copy from amazon.co.uk for 8. Oringal price is 16. Save 50% man!!! I am a Happy Bunny today!!

Sweet merciful aconite! Rejoice and celebrate. 255,000 words? Wow. The American edition could be upwards of 1000 pages. And they thought it was going to be tough making GoF into a movie. The OotP has the possibility to be a trilogy in and of itself.

Although June is still a long way away. D'oh.

Yay!!! OhmygoshI'msohappy!!!

WOW, this has definitely made my week. It's coming out three days after my birthday....what a fitting present, eh? :D

I'm actually really happy that it's coming out during the summer -- It'll give me a lot more time to read it, and brood over it. In fact, I would have been pretty upset if they had released it during the schoolyear.

And it's coming in June, too....that's a relief! I was a little upset when I heard it wasn't coming out 'till late July -- Mid-to-late June is infinitely better!!!

I'm so, SO happy!! :D

I was in a life drawing class when it was announced on the radio, earlier today. I just squealed and and was shaking with excitement. It produced rather expressionistic brush strokes on my painting. I'll just pretend that I meant to do it :elaugh:

Great news, though!! The very thought of it makes me just feel like I'm going to explode! I just grin and feel like jumping in the air! A whole new book, a whole new story ... and it's going to be just as magical as the others. Seriously, though - could any one of you have predicted any of the four? Did any of you expect either of them to be so wonderful? And this is a whole new one ... a whole new incredible plot to grab us readers and pull us inside the book. Eeeeepp!!!

well lets see.... 1/3 of 734 is 242... so 242 + 734 is 976. However, in all of the news articles that i have read, bloomsbury is downsizing the font/margins or something to make it not quite so long. They will probably do this with the american books as well, considering that it would weigh so much that the poor little children would not be able to hold them for more than a few seconds :p

A beautiful day for potterites around the world!!! 156 days 2 hours and 51 minutes and counting :clappy: :clappy:

Also.... I have never done this buy the books when they come out thing, because i just got into them last summer. If i want to go get one a midnight selling, should I get myself on a pre-booked list or no? I do not want to pre-order it online because I think the camping outside the bookstore experience would be great fun! Any tips for me? :p

HERE IS MY PREDICTION:

The little (and I mean LITTLE) passages they gave us from Book 5 I can conclude that...

That one with Dumbledore getting ready to tell Harry everything...LAST SENTENCE. AAAHHHHHHHH I will cry all day if that's the case. But that is how she will probably do it---she'll do a cliffhanger into Book 6 which we won't get for ANOTHER 2 years! I CANNOT WAIT TO READ BOOK 5! My goal is to get it the day it comes out and read it THAT day. WOO HOO. :rotfl: :D :) :crush: :clappy:

Anyway I just had a comforting thought for all those who are worried that they will not be able to stand the wait. In a couple of months the dvd should come out, then a couple of months after that the book will come out! We have something to tide us over:) Sort of like a baby steps program for pottergeeks anonymous ( Hello my name is sierra I'm a harry potter addict) :elaugh:

I'm so happy that a legitimate date has finally been released! :clappy: I can't wait to get my hands on the book and read it. Since it will be in the early summer (and that means I won't be in school at the time), I might actually be able to read it within a few days of its release. I know I won't sit down and read it in a whole day; I need time to take in all the new stories. ;) I'm just hoping that Barnes and Noble will still have some copies left in stock when I go in on the 21st (cause I'm not one for the whole camping out/midnight thing). :D

And Emma, I totally agree that Dumbledore's words might be the final sentence of the book. It sounds like something JKR would do.

seashell--

i guess you're right---i cant really read the book in one day. i need to take time to let everything soak in and re-read every sentence! haha!

ISN'T EVERYONE SO EXCITED THOUGH?! Can you guys believe that by this summer, we will be sitting in our rooms holding the fifth book!! fjkdflkjsdalfkjsdlf! (that is my excitement) My 2 hopes: 1) That some sort of romance gets going between some characters 2) The person dying is Colin

HAHA. Not that I hate him, but it would be the least painful.

EEK!! I just told all my Harry Potter-reading friends (even the non-fanatic ones.. they just think I'm crazy). I'm so excited!!! I have been checking Mugglenet religiously every day for.. well, I don't even remember how long now, but long enough that it has become an addiction, and I finally got what I was looking for!!

I just wish I'd come home earlier today, because this news made my day, or the 2-3 hours that's left of it, anyway.

All right, so 157 days is actually 6 months.. that's a semester and half my summer vacation. And I may just be on vacation then, meaning it will be really hard for me to find a copy on June 21st (although I can hope to make an erm, side trip to England during that time... I wish...), and so I'll have to wait till late August to read it, and I'll be mad because I'll have to avoid the forums...

but still.. 250,000 words!! An actual release date!! Book 5 exists, it's actually done!!! EEK!

I think I'm just going to run around with a grin on my face until my homework piles up and makes me temporarily forget about the release date.

The title is quite explanatory but I will endeavour (sp?) to explain further. Last night I kept thinking of ideas, requests, etc. So I scribbled them down on a snot rag and am attempting to transcribe then to a legible format, here.

++ I think that Arabella should be upgraded to a second year as a reeeward for telling us all. Although we would have found out eventually, Arabella went out of her way to find out and the first people she tells is us.

++ I think on every page here, or maybe just the homepage, we should have a countdown clock. Perhaps someone with the technology could create a downloadable one.

++ I thing that Dumbledore should have told Harry 5 years ago is the reason why Lord Voldemort wanted to kill him. When in the hopsital wing in the first book Harry asked Dumbledore that question but Dumbledore said he wouldn't tell him yet.

++ On the day the book opens I think that either it is Dudley's birthday (but a nagging thought tells me he was born while term was on) or he is being babysat by Arabella Figg. There must be more reason for him being outside then rather than just hating the Dursleys

++ HAHAHA. We don't need no stinking clue card, Mr. £38'000 90-word clue card!!! We got 88 words for free, and bear in mind that we a;ready were words like death...sorry...sacked...broom...ron, etc. So Mr. Anonymous telephone bidder, we are all in the same boat, except that you are minus £38'000. HAHAHA!!!

++ I think it is key that Harry is referred to as a teenage boy, no a child, to show the level and intesity of his maturaity and the books.

++ Here is a sudden random thought. What if the boy in the first sentence is not Harry. Let's look at the evidence... There is NO reference to his scar, his hair, eyes, or any of the physical attributes that are usually introduced with Harry, and the first sentences are rarely about Harry at all come to think of it.
PS/SS - We open with the Dursley's being very Dursleyish
CoS - Open at the breakfast table with Vernon complaining about Hedwig
PoA - Harry hates the summer, is doing his homework in secret and is a wizard
GoF - The scene with Wormtail, Nagini and Lord Voldemort.
AND...the boy is laying in the flowerbed. We know that Harry is growing more confident and strong against the Dursleys but would he really be laying on Petunia's flowerbed? I don't think so.

++ So if this boy is NOT Harry, who is he?
Ron? Nope, if Ron were in Privet Drive he would go to see Harry, not lie in the flowerbed, unles he wasn't allowed in, and he was sent to get Harry
Draco? Nope, aside from the fact that it is Draco Malfoy we are talking about, he would never lay on the ground in a flowerbed
Dudley? It is his house, but unless the diet seriously did work and he has turned into a nature boy, my money says Dudley is inside on his PS2, playing BMX XXX, or something along those lines.
Colin Creeveey? We know he is a superfan but again, why would he la in the flowerbed? He should be snapping shots or Harry, not chilling in the flowers.

++After laying out all the facts (in a flower bed, lol) I have decided that I don't know. I mean we all assume it's Harry, but why, just because the books focus on him, doesn't mean the first sentences always do, (see above) and his behaviour nd description is very uncharacteristic (see above)

++ Okay, I have had my random rambble, now I am going back to looking for more fanfic. Any recommenndations?

I was going to pre-order online but then I realized that the 21st is on Saturday and here in Canada there is no mail on Saturday's. I checked the bookstores here to see if they are taking pre-orders, nope! Looks like i'm going to be camping out on the 20th lol. :)

I wish that I had thought of camping-out rather than pre-ordering.

Camping outside a bookstore with a load of other Harry nutters sounds like so much fun, and it's in June so it will be just the right temperature. But at least this way I know I will definately get a copy.

I am going to go to sleep at a reasonable hour and be up at 7am, ready for to sign for my package at 8am. I will get up at precisely 7am (no excuses), and then have a shower and get dressed. Then at half past seven I shal make the mother of all snakcs with ice-cream, slicd meat, garlic herb cheese, toast with everything, plenty of chocolate, and some every flavour beans, and a whole bottle of coca cola with a pint glass all for me. This should all be prepared by 7:50am.

Then I shall select my best pen and place it next to the door, and whilst waiting for Mr. Postman I will make a little nest for myself on my bed, which will include many pillows and a beanbag, so that shall be living in a hole. I did consider reading outside, but the food would be ruined and I'd panic if a bee came near, and that would break my concentration. So in my room, (where I shall spend my whole day, until 6pm, unless I can book off work) and I wait for Mr.Postman.

Leaping up and opening the door when I hear the doorbell screech, I see his hands with an oustretched package offering it in return for merely a signature. I oblige with my standard scrawl, and also offer him perhaps a small cake, as I am a very kind person when I have a Book 5.

He kindly refuses because I am drooling on my package, so I snatch the package and then am in my room like a bullet and wolf down all the food except the ice cream so that I don't mess it up. I carefully unwrap it and savour every shred of cardboard and paperwork. Then read and read and read.

I won't be disturbed until at least 2pm, becuase my parents will think that I am asleep, but I am not. Then at half five I shall eat my tea and toddle of to work, dang and blast.

I'm not quite wetting myself but this is such a relief! Coming out after my exams. Now we know when we shall finally learn which of our predictions is correct!

It's been so long since GOF that the new book will change our world. We'll learn new facts about the characters and the past that will probably change our perspective on the whole saga so far. Regarding that extract with Dumbledore...I rather hope he won't tell EVERYTHING, or there won't be anything new to learn in the last two books! (OK, I know it must mean 'everything about a particular topic')

At the leaky cauldron, they have a countdown and if you click on the link, it takes you to a page where you can link to your own countdown. I wish I'd found it sooner so I didn't have to search for it on the internet, but that's an option as well - there's tons of countdown scripts out there.

Depends on where you get it from. I've pre-ordered stuff before and either got it on the day it was released (meaning I didnt' have to auctally go out and get it), or I got it a day or two BEFORE the release date.

I ordered my copy from Bloomsbury, and the site said that my book will arrive on that day, June 21st, not be sent on that day.
On Richard and Judy last night they said that the reason it was released on a staurday was so that kids didn't skip school. D-a-m-n their perceptive logic.

WOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Only 5 months to go......

Is pre-ordering any better than just reserving a copy at a bookstore? That's what I did when Goblet of Fire came out. I called a month or two ahead of time and they put me on the little reserve list thingie so then I went on July 8th to get my copy. And then a bunch of people I knew didn't get there's until a few days later because they pre-ordered it through amazon.com.

Ok so I was on mugglenet.com and I saw that Emerson posted his thoughts about how Dumbledore's last words will probably be the last ones in Book 5...DIDN'T I ALREADY SAY THAT?! Doing that is so something J.K. would do. We're gonna have to wait another 3 years until Book 6 to know all about Harry.

No it's too everyone's related. Harry and James are decendants of Gryffindor, Dumbledore's Harrys grandfather. Voldemort's either Lilys boyfriend, former boyfriend or her father. Snape was also in love with Lily. I don't believe any of it.

Isn't it just amazing how quickly an "unpublished" book has already become a best seller. One could argue it might make NYTimes best seller list, and without actually being released yet. I've thought of this too! Out of all the theories discussed here, it seems almost impossible for none of them to be true. I give JK a LOT of credit, hey, she's good at suprising us... but really can she be that good? I mean, members have come up with more good theories then I could count. We'll see won't we? What I'm worried about is whether theories I don't like, and which I think would make the story boring, turn out to be true. It would be disappointing--All this time I have been hoping, and thinking, that the Heir of Gryffindor theories is not going to turn out to be true since, in my opinion, it seems rather week. If it did turn out to be true, and don't know how I'd react. It would be wierd.

Yep daniel4hp thats a great fear of mine as well, I'd be so disappointed if Harry was Heir of Gryffindor because I've always hated that theory. But I'm sure that JK will have plenty of twists that we never saw coming.

I agree, she hasn't failed to surprise us let. It's my inclination to believe we won't be let down... but after so much expecting, so much awaiting...it might be a bit different this time. The book is going to be long. While "long and boring" often go together, well... let's just hope long only means more complex and exciting!

But this book is going to be sooo long. I always thought that GoF was so long because the triwizard tournament was taking place, and that in itself took up a few hundred pages... but what's so huge in OotP that would make the book one third longer? Its preposterous just thinking about it!! There's got to be a ton going on, and theres going to be a very complex plot. I admit I had to read goblet a few times to get it straight.

I am also sure that one or two of our theories will be true, like ron/hermione and things like that. But anything related to plot or james and lily's past will be a total twist.

I think that the DD quote will not be at the end of the book. If it was the last line I doubt they would give it to us. It would ruin the ending.. don't you think? :)

It would sure make people crazier for Book 6 then they've been for Book 5. I'm not too worried, it's unlike JK and as someone mentioned, she has been pretty consistent with us. The books have all ended at the train station, and when JK said the plot of Book 5 is going to be different from the other books, I'm inclinded to think she isn't referring to the beginning or the ending, but the meat in the middle. Look at it this way... the book begins with Harry at the Dursley's house over the summer, just as all the other books begin. Why change up the ending?

Picko
January 20th, 2003, 12:01 pm
Well I think that JK will manage to surprise us. All our theories are based off existing knowledge, after book 5 comes out we'll all have more knowledge and different theories will begin to pop up. JK has all the knowledge because she is the creator of her world, she'll manage to surprise us because she has more information to form her storylines than we have. The only time I think us, the readers, will have a chance of guessing correctly will be when we are predicting book 7 and even then she'll probably trick us with something from left field.

*Wails horribly*

My parents don't exactly like Harry Potter (not in the "it's the devil" way, they just think it's stupid), so I have to wait for like two weeks past the release date to battle through a crowd and get my paws on a copy... either that or I'll pay my cronies to nab me one. Can you pass off a HP pajama party as a summer project? I need excuses here, people! HELP!!

I can see it now: "Mom, dad... um... I need to do some vital research at Barnes & Noble at 12:00 at night on June 21st. I'll be studying crazy mobs of people in pointy hats. I need forty bucks and a billy club, please!"

Man, tough luck. I'm going to the Barnes & Noble party at midnight. Me and my friend are gonna par-tay!

Just for the record, I'm pre-orderin mine off a site that sells books. I'll be so jealous when my friend will get it first. The delivery man will come Saturday in the afternoon probably while my friend will be past chapter one...

I don't think I'll pre-order mine because I've never pre-ordered anything but if all these pre-order figures keep being so good I may have to change my mind.

Anyway I'm sooo excited and the only thing I'm a little nervous about is that if it isn't as wonderful as I imagined I might be slightly inclined to wreck my room and bang my head on the wall... ;) ;) ;) But that can't happen with J.K., right??

I hope it doesn't drag on like the start of GoF did.

I reread it last night, and I realised when I was a third of the way through that practically nothing had happened. They didn't even know about the tournament yet.

That is remarkable. I've been all talk saying that I'm going to read that book in two days tops because I don't think I will be able to put it down but now I'm eating my words. I'm going to be working and going school so it's going to take a while. Of course I'm not complaining. The more the better.

Let's hope not. GoF didn't really get interesting to me until chapter 16 [Goblet of Fire]. Oh sure, chapters 9, 12, 13 & 14 were cool, but other than that, it was just alot of exposition going nowhere.

Am I the only one who actually enjoys the beginning of GoF? :) I love the Quidditch World Cup because it's amusing to read about so many wizards crammed together. Plus, I love any chapter that involves the Weasleys. :)

Sebastian06
February 12th, 2003, 5:13 am
I think that the point of the somewhat slow beginning was to explain some things and to introduce others for the plot later on in the book. The Quidditch World Cup was extremely important, what with the Dark Mark, the clues about Winky, Barty Jr., etc., and introducing new characters, so it doesn't seem as if they just popped out of nowhere later on in the story. Plus, I think we'll find that a lot of the over-explaining/emphasizing in the beginning will be important to later books in the series. Just my thoughts. :)

I like the beginning of GoF. I enjoy detailed explainations of stuff. I was interested in all the stuff about Dudley's diet and the Weasley house. Of course the entire Quiddich World Cup parts were great too.

I love the first chapter of GoF I think it's brilliant. Personally I think that if OotP is half the book that GoF was we'll be lucky, GoF was and still is completely amazing from cover to cover.

Yeah, if you want to create a world that's believable, you just need some space to do it, I guess (reminds me of Tolkien). Of course the beginning does not at once lead to a specific point but it's just nice to emerse in the whole world that's built around the characters. i don't like books that just explain the things which are vitally important for the plot (Of course I have to say that cos J.K. NEVER makes mistakes;-))).

Picko
February 19th, 2003, 4:06 am
The wait didn't bother me either but I think that was because I only started reading the books when GoF was released so I had plenty of reading and re-reading to do before I began to think about the next book.

Well.. I wouldn't say I was bothered, just extremely impatient :D
I'd never want JKR to compromise quality for speed though. I'll be impatient all I want, but I know it's all worth it in the end (especially when the end is so near!)

When I first read the news about OotP I nearly had a heart attack! I was sooooooooo HAPPY!! I can't wait until June 21st! When I get my book I'm not going anywhere near the internet because I don't want to hear anything about it. I want to read it all and then check out what everyone thinks about it.

Wow...I knew about it last month..but forgot to add to this thread. :)
I was so happy! I think I found it out at school or something..I started jumping up and down and screaming. And my friend ordered the book, and gave me a note saying she owes me a book and on the back was the OOTP book cover..it was my birthday present. :) I just can't wait!
