Hello there!!! Well, "forever" doesn't even begin to cover for how long I haven't updated this thread.

So here are some new pictures (17) that I hope you like them.

Thank you to everybody that left a comment and sorry I haven't been able to reply properly.
Some of you wanted to know the media that I use and that is Photoshop. I do the sketches in pencil and them color them in Photoshop ( I use a tablet, by the way). Hope that helps.

These are some newer stuff I've been working on; I'll add the the URLs addresses. Most of the pictures a just colored sketches or just black and white sketches because I really haven't gotten much time to finish them.

Snape.

These are a series of sketches scanned from my sketchbook. They happen to have side annotations making a little bit of fun of the characters. Don't hit me to hard for them. :P

So this is Lupin (short-haired version) and Kingsley.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/tonks-remus-kiss.jpg

Harry and Lupin in his office at Hogwarts. (PoA).

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/remus-harry-office-small.jpg

And here's the older stuff.

This painting is supposed to be when Lupin jumps in between Malfoy and Harry/Neville at the DoM battle.

I know that neither Malfoy nor Lupin seem to be casting any spells at the moment, but in the drawing it look rather lame to have the two guys just pointing at each other with sticks. So I added the curses.

And because whenever I de-rez the paintings almost 50% of the detail is gone, I posted a link to the same picture where the image is bigger. In case you want to see what's going on in the background.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/lupin-vs-malfoy-dom.jpg

This is the same scene, but it's just a close up. It would be when Lupin tells Harry to round the others and go (or something like that)

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/lupin-harry.jpg

And this is again based on Loup's and Elf's awesome theory. It's supposed to be Remus, Gryffindor and Fawkes. If you think Remus and Gryffindor look alike there's a reason for it (besides from the one in JK's description) and if you want to check out the theory here's a link:

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/remus-godriccopy.jpg

This one is Tonks and Remus at St Mungos after the MoM battle. I did it for my friend's B-day and she told me it was the most depressing birthday present she has ever got

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/tonks-remus-mungos.jpg

Older stuff:

This one is the Marauders (hopefully you can tell who's who)

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/marauders-photo.jpg

The following three are "Lupin through the years" (sort of)

This one is in his late teens

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/teen-lupincopy.jpg

This one, in his late 20's

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/remus-late20copy.jpg

And this one, in his late 30's

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/profile-rjl.jpg

And this is the older stuff I posted...

This one is Harry and Lupin at the MoM (veil scene).

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/remus-harry-veil.jpg

The following paintings are actually based on Elf’s and Loup Garou’s theory about Lupin being the HBP. Regardless of whether Lupin ends up being the HBP or not, the theory is really cool in itself. It evokes some really nice imagery and it was really fun to try and paint some of it.
Here’s a link to the theory, check it out, it rocks.

http://www.cosforums.com/cosarchive/showpost.php?p=1476708&postcount=1288

This is just Lupin as the HBP

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/lupin-hbp.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/lupin-hbp.jpg

And this is DD telling Lupin about him being the HBP.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/lupin-dd-hbp.jpg

This is a joke really. It’s Sirius and Remus at Grimmauld Place.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/sirus-remus.jpg

The next two are Remus/Tonks. I did them because I lost a bet to a friend that ships them. So, because of my dumbness I ended up doing these two paintings. I have nothing against them, I just don’t like to draw romantic stuff too much.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/remus-tonks-kiss.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/remus-tonks-kiss.jpg

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/tonks-lupin.jpg

This one I made for a class and I actually have to paint it. I'll post the painted version when I have it.

http://i2.photobucket.com/albums/y18/caladan-atreides/Lupin-DD-Gargoyles.jpg

And I guess the rest doesn’t need a lot of explanations. Hope you guys like them.
I’ll go check what you guys are doing.

Peace out.

*jaw drop* Ok, I've seen some of these before, but that doesn't change how fantastic they are, which hit me anew when I saw the new ones. How on earth do you manage that much detail??

Oh My God- these are brilliant, I am not a huge fan of the illistrative style, but you caould convert me!
I love your attention to detail and the delicalte shading and wow... I shold take time to really enjoy them before i babble, but, they promote the babble response.... They aren't soley watercolor are they? I love the way you draw hands...
I would love to see your Snape (non joke version)

O.O They're amazing! Lupin may be a little too scary to be desired, but they're all so lovely! O.O My personal favourite would be the Sirius and Lupin pic in Grimmauld Place XDDD

Hey guys, thanks, I went to eat something and you guys replied.

Dsbs Thanks. Yes, I'm a detail freak. I'd love to do more, but the day only has so many hours. I still have to check your stuff, but I need to do it in a computer that supports the artpad progam. I cannot do it at home. Which, by the way, brings me to ask, what is the ArtPad? Is it like Photoshop or Painter? I only use Photoshop (and Painter if I'm in a brave mood), is there ArtPad for Mac or is it only for PC?

chiba_anna Hehe, yeah, I do have a thing for scary looking guys :)

squirrely_wrath Hmm...but Alan Rickman is cool already. I don't think I can imagine Snape in any other way ;)

Wraith of Truth Thanks. Don't know about the famous part though :)

Yeah... I'd rant on and on about how utterly fantastic it is... and how perfectly amazing it is... and how I wish I could draw like that... But I'm sure you're sick of it... haha.

Even though I never imagined Remus with facial hair, he looks wonderful. And, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one in the world who can't get enough of the werewolf.

Oh. My. God. I am a bit speechless...Those are so good it's scary. There is absolutely nothing to criticise... Wow.
How long does it take you to colour one of those, by the way? The detail is insane.

I like first one most.
It has very much emotion and the colors choice reinforce that strong emotion.
Also the one with Lupin and Sirius imaging to hunt Umbridge or struggle Snape is so amazing funny.^_^
You're a good and talented artist.

Ack - don't even look at my stuff, it's like kindergarten scribbling compared to this.
Artpad's just an online drawing tool and it's freaking impossible to use, although I'd love to see what you could do with it. I have no Remus pictures myself, because I'm waiting 'till I'm good to draw him. I don't have a mac, but I think artpad works on one - it's not a program, it's just online.

I know what my favourite is now, it's the one with just his face. I think. The last one's awesome too, and there is some scary detail on the coloured ones. You know what I think I like best is the tattered robes. They're actually tattered, you didn't just add some patches. The care you put into it is phenomenal - please post more when you've got the chance :) Also, have you drawn anyone other than Remus? Just out of curiosity? I mean, I can't get enough of him but I'd like to see your interpretations of the other HP characters.

Ok enough gushing. You rule, though!

You know, I saw the movie before I read the third books. So up until now, whenever I thought of Lupin, I thought of Thewlis.

Now that image has been replaced by your excellent images.

caladan
March 13th, 2005, 7:56 pm
JulieWeasley Thank you. Yeah I could never get enough of Remus Lupin. It would rock if JK would write a book on him, but I guess that's just fangirl wishful thinking. :)

ulk well, it depends on the detail really. But the one with Lupin and DD took me a day and a half to put color on it. I assume the other Lupin/DD is going to take 2 full days (like 14 to 16hs each day) to finish. Architectural detail is usually what takes the longest amount of time.

oceandream130, TnK, LengMui Thank you.

Yamatoking Thanks. You know about the Sirius and Remus one, I'm glad it comes across as funny. When I was doing it I thought it was somewhat pathetic.

I saw your gallery. And I really like your style. There is no way I can do anime style drawings. I've tried because I love it, but I just can never make the characters look alright. I really like the black and whites one you have and the Dementor attacking Harry. The color on that one is just like what I imagined it should be.

Dsbs

Oh, that makes sense. Whenever I tried to open a file it said I needed an upgrade on flash or some other web program. Yes, it should work on Mac, I'll check it on the school computers then. And hopefully I'll get around to see what you're up to.

And no, I haven't drawn any other HP character. I guess the only other one that I have is Dumbledore, because Lupin and DD are my fave HP characters. I just don't do too much character design. Most of these drawings (with the exception of Lupin as HBP) start when I'm at school and the instructor doesn't stop talking (Binns like ) and I really cannot work on enviromental stuff, so I just doodle people (also not to forget my figure drawing).
And the other thing is that a lot of the characters I do picture them pretty much the way the look in the movie.
I have some issues with movie-Lupin, though. And it's not Thewlis, I do like him, it's the overall look. Like the Hitler's moustache (and I do like facial hair as you can see). But really, why on earth the Hitler's moustache, it only looks good on Clark Gable or Errol Flynn. And I'll stop ranting.

Oh, and glad you like the tattered robes. I think holes in clothing are the coolest thing ever :)

Nagisa Wow, thanks. Glad you like the way he looks. I thought I was going to get smack over the head because of the beard and the racoon look :)

Wow! I love the way you draw Lupin. It's the closet anyone has gotten to what I imagine Lupin to look like. How do you do some much detail? I wish I could draw like you. I would love yo see more of your work. I think my favorite picture would be the one with Lupin and Dumbledore on the castle.

*finally unglues eyes from drawing of incrediablely hot Remus.*
I love it! Your drawings are amazingly realistic.I draw too,but mine have a bit of a cartoony feel to them.
I especially loved Sirius and Remus sitting in their chairs imagining what they'd do to thier least favorite people.

hi caladan! thanks for the owl. it's wonderful to see all your lupin works in one place, and especially somewhere where they can be appreciated by a wider audience (and where you can get some positive feedback when school is getting you down...)

of the new ones i really like remus with the bottle. you captured perfectly the dejected look in his eyes, and from the slight curve of his mouth i can see that the potion tastes disgusting. it's really a brilliant character portrayal, also a side of remus he doesn't show in public because he always puts on such a brave face and doesn't want to get other people down. but no one is always happy-go-lucky, and this is one of those moments when remus is really sick of being sick.

so two questions: all those criss-crosses on his body, especially in the sword sketch, are they all meant to be scratches he gave himself while he was in werewolf form? or are they scars from battle? or both?

and secondly, what medium do you use to make the coloured paintings? is it airbrush?

keep up the good work!

Caladan!!! So glad you decided to post your pics!!!

Sorry, but you might need to wipe some drool off that second pic with Remus and Tonks. I think I made a mess, but his expression is just so darn sexy!

Can't wait to see more!

Can I ask about that imagery on the side of the first Remus/Tonks pic? What went into that?

Furthering what Yamatoking said: the emotion in that first one is really enhanced by the lack of color. Like a black-and-white photo where the details just pop out--so do their faces. Heartbreaking.

You are a wonderful artist with such amazing vision, as we've told you over in Lupin-Land. Keep posting more, and give us updates if you can!

Wow. Wow.
These must of taken you loads of time and effort, but it was well worth it. These are beyond excellent. Beyond amazing, even. So much emotion in them all, and expression, plenty of that as well.
I agree with you on the Tonks/Remus ship, I'm not to fond of it. However, I utterly adore the way you portrayed her. Just spiffing.
The tattered robes are just to real to be a drawing, breathtaking.
And Fawkes, dear old Fawkes. Who could forget that beloved creature?

In short, your work belongs in a gallery, a gallery of massivly high security. Dragons at every entrance. Enchantments hovering in the air. Millions of other secure messures. The Great Calandan Gallery of Breathtaking Art. Hey, it's more then possible.

grey lady,Blue_Eyes,grokgrok Thank you guys.

Hal Hey, cartoony is great. Did you post any of your drawings?
I'd love to do something more like that. Like anime (it's very frustrating not to be able to draw anime) Have you seen Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence? It's really awesome movie.

Urqu Hi!
I'm glad the one of Remus with the bottle came across that way. I really didn't know if his expression was going to work. I know he's not like that every single day, but I assume once every 6 month he probably gets into the "this-really-sucks" mood. Or the way you wrote it (which is a thousand times better)and it's exactly what I wanted to draw.
all those criss-crosses on his body, especially in the sword sketch, are they all meant to be scratches he gave himself while he was in werewolf form? or are they scars from battle? or both?
Yes, I think it's probably a combination of injuries that he got in wolf form and battle. I was thinking that he only got the Marauders for very few years of his life to lessen the effects of the wolfish mind. And Wolfsbane is really recent. So, he would probably have a large collection of bruises and scratches.
Also if the Marauders had to keep him controlled, I think Padfoot and Prongs probably had to use a certain degree of violence (I mean the times when Remus recalls that there were near misses).
And probably he got some scars from battle, though I'm not sure how that works. I only know of two people that have scars from curses: one is Harry, and the other one is Mad-Eye. And with Mad-Eye I'm actually assuming he got them from a combination of spells hitting him and god knows what else.
So, yes I'd think it's a combination of injuries that he got in werewolf form (self-inflicted or not) and from battle.
what medium do you use to make the coloured paintings? is it airbrush?
I don't use airbrush too much. I just adjust some of the brushes that are the Photoshop default and use those. I do use some airbrush to get some of the diffusion in the background. I'm not sure if that's too clear. I can tell you exactly which brushes I use from Photoshop 7 if you want to, I don't have the CS version, though.

Thanks for the comment Urqu. Oh, and I read in the Lyceum about the wedding in the castle. That sounds so cool!

Mrs Flamel Hi!
Sorry, but you might need to wipe some drool off that second pic with Remus and Tonks
:rotfl:
I'm glad you like him. And to answer the question about what I was thinking on the first Remus/Tonks picture...errr...actually, I'm not sure if you want to know :)
So, I did the second picture that I posted, first. And my friend told me they just looked like good friends. So the second one that I did, (first one I posted) I made sure she would get the point that they're not just good friends. However, I couldn't resist making a little joke inside the celtic patterns (I didn't design the patterns, not that crazy yet) :)
So I did this drawing of a chameleon and a wolf, and if you look at their expressions they are supposed to be in love. Hope it doesn't sound too wrong, it was just meant to be an inside joke to bother my friend a little.
Did that make some sense?

I do try to make little references to other things when I desing something. The way Remus looks is not entirely casual. It's fun to do, I guess.

Thanks for your comments. Really, it's good to know that some ideas get through the way I more or less thought about them. And I'll post some more when I can.

FawkesPhoenix Thanks. Glad you like the drawings.

And Fawkes, dear old Fawkes. Who could forget that beloved creature?
He rocks, doesn't he?

Thanks again for your words. It's really encouraging.

hello, your stuff is amazing !!!!!

is there a face and a hand behind the veil in the first picture?
The wolf and chameleon was the first thing I noticed in the Tonks/Lupin picture its a really clever touch and the celtic design is painstakingly good!
the close up portrait of Lupin really looks like this irish actor called John Lynch
he was in 'The Secret Garden' (sorry, i realise that's a bit obscure) I'll try and find a picture, annnnyyyway please post more of your stuff its incredible, i'd really like to see a half morphed Lupin/Werewolf you could really do it justice :tu:

Wow, I can't believe I didn't check this out sooner! I love your style! The details are absolutely wonderful! Sorry, I can't think of anything original to say.

Just knowing that four of these "magical masterpieces" were inspired by Elf's and my oddball little theory still raises chills. Thank you from the bottom of my heart! Provided our project ever makes it to completion, and we would have any influence whatsoever with a prospective publisher (a longshot, I freely admit), you stand first in line for us as a potential cover artist.

Thank you. Glad you like the work.
is there a face and a hand behind the veil in the first picture?
Not intentionally. I didn't pay attention, but maybe the patterns create one.
The wolf and chameleon was the first thing I noticed in the Tonks/Lupin picture its a really clever touch and the celtic design is painstakingly good!
Note on this: I didn't design the celtic patterns. The only one I re-design is the one where the chameleon and the wolf are standing. I'm happy you notice it. It was fun to do.

Oh, and I'd love to see a picture of John Lynch. Is the "Secret Garden" good? I can check it out.

Again, thank you.

Yes, it's intentional. Except for the tattered trousers, the rest is an attempt to recreate a little the theory created by Loup Garou and Elf, where it parallels the legend of King Arthur with GG with Lupin. I'm not explaining this OK, if you can read the theory, is really cool (whether it turns out to be true in canon or not) and there's a lot of reaserch and thought behind it. Here's the link:

http://www.cosforums.com/cosarchive/showpost.php?p=1476708&postcount=1288

So the sword is supposed to be Godric Gryffindor's sword (the same one Harry has in CoS), Fawkes is there to symbolize a lot of things: from reincarnation, to Dumbledore, to Gryffindor himself, and just all the associations that come with Fawkes. So whenever you see either Fawkes or the sword (especially), is because I'm trying to make some refernce to their theory. I just love the idea.

The tattered jeans are not meant to be anything in particular. Remus wears a tattered robes, so I assumed whatever pants he would wear, they would be in a pretty sorry state too. And, because as I've said somewhere above, I think holes in clothing are really cool.

I hope that answered your question more or less. And thank you so much for the comments.

Loup
I already sent you an owl. But thanks again. And it's my pleasure to make reference to your great theory whenever I can.

OK first of all can I just say that I'd like to pick myself up after collapsing on the floor at how utterly breathtaking these pictures are.
At first I didn't really like the way you painted Lupin but now I just love it. I really like the pic with Sirius (he's so darn sexy!)
Kudos to the Lupin/Tonks pictures! I am a supporter of that ship and that ship only and I think they are really great. :tu:

Lovely pictures, very well-done! i liked the one with harry and Remus the most- I loved how Remus hugged Harry.

I also liked the picture of Remus and Sirius.

only one thing: Remus is quite scary. He looks like a criminal barbarian. One of those people who lived on the 9 century or something. Wild, dangerous. The ones who killed because it was the rule of survival!

Remus may be a werewolf, but he is the kindest person ever. And his gentleness doesn't show in this pictures, as far as I am concerned.

I am not very crazy about the bear, either, but the expression of his eyes is the most disturbing!

Anyway, keep going, you have a lot of talent!

FoxyDoxy thank you, glad you like the work.

Lynz Thanks. I'm glad you like the Remus/Tonks ones. They were rather difficult to do for me. And I know what you mean about the way Remus looks. It was one of the reasons I was not sure whether to show the works or not. There's a lot of reasoning behind the way he looks, that's rather complex, long and is of course my personal opinion. :)
Thanks for leaving a comment, it's good to know how concepts are seen from outside one's mind.

gottaloveLupin Thanks for the comments.
I really didn't mean to make Remus look evil, or like a murderer, and I was not making reference to him being a werewolf by the way he looks either. But of course, it might not come across that way :(
I sent you an owl, that hopefully explains a little bit better why I chose to make Remus the way he looks. And thanks again.

SilverStar thank you.

oh my Lord...

Those are so very cool...though I share the feelin of some other not-so-agressive-mind-picture of Lupin, I do really think you draw very well. I know you gonna be famous some day. I wish I can draw too, make pretty drawings, but I just simply can't. None that I ever draw looks like what I intend them to look like :upset:

Care to share with me why you make Lupin look so scary? Apart that I read you said earlier that you have *things* for those kind of guys :eyebrows:

caladan: I don't use airbrush too much. I just adjust some of the brushes that are the Photoshop default and use those. I do use some airbrush to get some of the diffusion in the background. I'm not sure if that's too clear. I can tell you exactly which brushes I use from Photoshop 7 if you want to, I don't have the CS version, though.

so you do it entirely on the computer? or do you sketch it by hand and then scan it in or something? (i really don't know how that stuff works. all i know about drawing on the computer using "paint" and clicking the mouse around and it looks like total ****, so i somehow can't believe these were done completely on the computer...)

The secret garden is an adaptation of the childrens novel (and my favorite film at age 10) it's still quite a charming film though if your into quaint English tales.

Hey, thank you. Glad you like them. And I might send you an owl about why I made Lupin look like that. It's rather long to post here, I think.
I was not trying to make him look scary precisely, but for sure I was not thinking in Brad Pitt when I designed him :)

Urqu
I usually do the sketches by hand and then I paint them on the computer. However, I use a wacom tablet. I don't know if you have seen them. But is this tablet and a type of pen that you use instead of the mouse. You have to look at the screen while you're drawing/painting on the tablet, but you get used to it pretty fast. There's no way I could do it with just the mouse.
And Photoshop is really awesome for painting. You can adjust the brushes and create textures and you can get similar results as if you were painting with traditional media. It sometimes tends to look too "sinthetic", but there's ways around that.
Technically, Painter is better than Photoshop. The brushes and media that you can use are way better (more realistic and less plastic looking), however it crashes every five minutes. I don't know if it works better on PC, but I have a Mac, and it's a nightmare to make it work with the old OS.
But, yes, all the color is done in Photoshop, except for the value only ones, like the one in the MoM and the Sirius/Remus one. Those I painted with a warm grey set of Copic markers.

I don't remember almost anything about Paint, but for what I remember it is pretty basic, and with a mouse it's really hard to color stuff in. It's doable, but it would take a long amount of time. And I think you'd mess up your wrist (and I'm not kidding here).

Here's the link for the tablets if you want to check them out
http://www.wacom.com/

But basically that's the process. I should be able to do the entire thing on the computer, but I still like the feel of drawing on paper better.

If you want to check out really awesome stuff done entirely on the computer go to this site. The man rocks:

Hey, this is from a while back, but I just wanted to say, I thought you captured the gentle, mysterious, mischeivious side of Lupin very well, while also showing the fact that yes, he does have scars, and a darker side. It's not at all how I imagined him, but fantastic nonetheless, and I really can see how people might imagine him like that, even if I don't. Think you'll do any more? These are wonderful. I am really drawn to the one of Remus and Dumbledore. Alot of what I see of Lupin is captured here. I'm not sre if this make sense but... I have always had the impression that if it weren't for being a werewolf, He would have the sort of casual aloofness that you see in fashion editorials. Handsome, brooding, and reluctant to let himself be drawn completely into a cause. Like he could be swallowed up by his principles...

Thanks, it's good that some of what I was thinking shows through.
I think you might have guessed this one because of my signature, but I'm a big fan of Dune. And when Lupin appeared on PoA, he sort of reminded me of a lot of the characters in Dune. Very mysterious, with a high sense of honor and morality, with a wry sense of humor, intelligent, really aware of his environment, observant, and cool. There's no mischeivious character in Dune, though, but the rest comes pretty close to Paul Atreides, Leto I or Duncan Idaho. Of course, it might also be that I read way too many comic books and my brain cells are in short circuit :)
And I don't think I'll be posting anything any time soon. I have to focus on my school work, otherwise I'll never graduate. :(

Well, I'm going to an art school, and I should be graduating sometime during June. It's a good school, and I've also been working rather hard to try to get my stuff to sort of work.
I do have to say that characters is not what I usually do. I've been working on perspective drawing for two years by now, so drawing cities and buildings is what I like the most.
I have a lot of doubts when it comes to character design, but I'm too much of a fangirl not to try and do some Harry Potter related drawings :)
And, by the way, I couldn't play or sing anything if my life depended on it. Really, I cannot even sing Happy Birthday without missing part of the tune :(

You know I'm not a Remus/Tonks shipper either. It's just one of those things that I could care less whether it happens or not. However, having a close friend that's a hardcore R/T shipper, I should have guessed that, at a point, I was going to end up drawing them (grr.. I'm still mad about loosing that bet).
I do have to admit they're fun to draw together, though :)

maisis00
Oh, I don't mind at all that you use the drawing as a desktop background. In fact, I'm very flattered. Thank you so much for your comments.
And, yes, it's a heart breaking scene. I hope JK doesn't pull another one of those on us, because that was truly depressing.

I have decided that the movies are okay but what would really make the books come to life is an animated series of movies that are true to the book in story and detail.
That would be so great. I completely agree with you. I'd also love to see something that respects much more the spirit of the books and does justice to JK's characters and storyline. I sometimes wonder if Kloves has actually read the books, especially PoA.
And again thanks.

Lucca
Thank you. Actually working on Photoshop, to me at least, takes the same time than working traditionally. The big advantage with Photoshop is that you can work on layers, and if you separate your layers well enough, you can modify things way faster (than with traditional media).
But, the painting of DD and Lupin sitting on the fence, took around 16hs to finish. And, err... I'm rather slow also :)

In your original group of pictures that were hosted at Yahoo, you also included a color headshot and a full-body pose of Remus leaning against a wall. Is there any particular reason you aren't displaying them here? Some of your work, the one with dumbleodre and lupin for instance, reminds me of the Lord of *** Rings artwork. It has that same ethereal 'other world' quality to it. They look for all the world like they could be sitting in Rivendell.

I also really love the last one. You've captured his expression so well, and the way you've hid his fingers coupled with his facial features, he actually looks a little canine (or lupine?). I don't know whether that was intentional or not, but it's very cool either way!

Hi everybody! Sorry for not answering before but school is rather hectic right now.

But well, I managed to post some new pictures. They're at the very beggining of the thread. I'll just keep on posting them there (in the first page) so that they're all together and I don't double post or do anything that gives away how senile I'm becoming :)

Anyway, hope you like them.

Thank you so much for your words guys! It's really encouraging to know that you like the pictures. It's quite nerve-breaking to show what one does, so thanks for your comments.

That's the best drawing ever! It was really funny. Thanks.

Wow. Thank you. I'm very embarrased now, however my ego seems to be very happy :)

Thanks.

Some of your work, the one with dumbleodre and lupin for instance, reminds me of the Lord of *** Rings artwork. It has that same ethereal 'other world' quality to it. They look for all the world like they could be sitting in Rivendell.
Wow. That's such a huge compliment. I have the Art of the Fellowship of the Ring (one day I have to get the other two books) and I absolutely love their designs. John Howe, Alan Lee and Paul Lasaine rock!

About Remus looking wolfish. I really didn't plan it that way. I always imagined him with very sharp angles and facial hair. And the facial hair is mostly because to me Lupin represents all the wizards that I love: Gandalf, Dumbledore, Obi-Wan (yeah, he's not a wizard but close). He's sort of a mix of all of them, so naturally (to me), he needs some facial hair. However, because he's not all that old I couldn't think of him as having a really long beard like Gandalf. And that's mostly it. But, I didn't have the wolf in mind a whole lot.

And thanks, again.

Morweniris
Thank you, so much. Glad you liked the Tonks/Lupin kiss. I think if my friend keeps on pestering me about them I'll start shipping them too. In that case I'll probably end up doing more pictures about them. There's something fun about drawing Lupin and Tonks together ( and that, will probably end when HBP comes out and Tonks starts dating Charlie  But I guess in the shipping fandom, what canon has to say is not really all that important :)).

I LOVE the clothing and the details on the Marauders pic! Why aren't you designing the costumes for the film? Their faces are good and true to character, though they all seem to have the same nose and eyebrow shape. I really like James' pose and his hair! Sirius seems too calm and thoughtful, but suitably aloof - I personally think he more suits the pose Remus is in, and vice versa. But I respect your own vision of the characters, if that's what you prefer. Wonderful work! :)

Right, I do art at Uni and I'm doing Graphic Design next year. But how the hell are you THAT good. I have never seen anything so good in my life. I recall hearing that you are still at school, what school is this? If that is so I recommend you become an professional artist, you will be famous.

And btw have you actually painted them by hand or on Photoshop with an airbrush?

And Tonks looks well fit

Hi caladan! Excellent artwork, as usual! I'm so glad you posted some new things. Everyone loved the painting you made for the Lyceum :)

I really like the one of Lupin in his 30's. I think you captured his quiet and somewhat sad demeanor quite well there.

But of course, my favorite is still Lupin holding Harry after Sirius went through the veil. I put it as a background on my computer, and yesterday 2 friends were over and asked about it, so I explained who you were and how you made it, and they were in awe! They thought it was the best picture ever of Lupin, and one said he wished Lupin would have looked like that inthe film! :)

Just thought you'd like to know. Keep up the good work! *hugs*

Beautiful new pics. I love the contrasting coloring of all the marauders, and of course, how Remus is doing bunny ears. ;) That wacky fellow.

You make him simultaneously powerful but quiet. It's perfect. And he's dead sexy, but that's neither here nor there, right?

Ha, ha! You got me there! Yeah, I'm quite rusty at figure drawing. Way too long without properly drawing people. One of the reasons I enjoy doing some Harry Potter characters is because I can get away from my usual perspective drawing. I know the basics of costume design because you more or less apply the same principles that you would apply for environments (like repeating shapes, color connections, etc), but I only draw people just to show scale in a drawing. So yep. Have a hard time making people. Thanks for pointing that out. Should work on that more.

Oh, and by the way, if you have time and want to check it out, this is what I usually draw (but it's not HP related):

Thanks! I do go to an art school, well it's more a design school really.
I paint with Photoshop, but I rarely use the airbrush. I just customize one of the hard brushes that version 7 has. And that's about it really.
Thanks for your comment on Tonks, girls are a nightmare to draw (for me at least)!

Glad you like those. You know, I don't ship them either. I lost a bet to a friend who does ship them. And I had to draw them for her. However, she's really close to convince me about shipping them too. I'm resisting, but the arguments she finds are very hard to contradict. Shame on me, I guess.

caladan, i really am impressed with how you've developped remus "over the years" - how the features soften as one goes back in time, how one can tell it is the same person but aged. and i think you got the ages well, too, though i think the one you call "late teens" i wouldn't guess at older than 15. and the "late twenties" - purrrrr! i'm in my late twenties, girl! what are you doing to me???

nice work.

edit: and the costumes on the marauders...would you make me some clothes like that? ;) i especially like peter's tunic, the glorious detail. and you've picked colours that are good for the respective characters, both physically and character-wise (royal purple for the "practically royalty" sirius, warm, down to earth brown for our cuddly remus, warm and bright red for the brilliant james, cold aqua blue for the traitor...).

I was trying for Dumbledore to be comforting (you spell it like that?) Lupin, and he (DD) is supposed to be lost in thought. Hmm... I have a very Star Wars idea concerning Lupin and DD; it's a complete strech from canon, but it fun to play with :)

-----------------------------------

Err...and I have a question. I don't know if somebody can help me out with this. I have my monitor calibrated accordingly to my printer. My printer usually prints out way lighter and somewhat more magenta than what I see on my screen, so now I changed it so it prints OK. However, when I post stuff on the web, the colors and the contrast change a lot.
I have a mac and I know the colors are more washed out than in a PC, but I really cannot tell. At school there's all macs and all my friends have macs (I know we're weird).
So can anybody please tell me if the contrast is more or less OK and if the colors are not too washed out?
Thanks! That would help a lot.

Holy cow, those are wonderful. You are really a talented artist you should be proud of yourself. Tonks is beautiful especially in the painting of her and Remus when she lying down. Yes, I imagined that glasses are a more modern invention.
But there's nothing in canon that states otherwise, so I went along with that.

For that matter, my costume design is far from accurate. I'm vaguely borrowing from Medieval and Renaissance periods to design it. But I'm not being accurate at all.

Plus, they're wizards. Maybe they invented glasses before Muggles did

Or the Lion Man can be the new minister of magic, the new DADA teacher, etc. Of course. :)

And, yes, I know he's probably not how people picture him. I have my reasons for it though (and if you look at the pictures in my signature you might guess :) )

Thanks. It's good to hear that you like my style. It has given me a lot of headaches :)
And hands are always a pain to draw! I'm always wondering if they look like hands or claws, or cotton balls, or a flat plane with sausages attached, etc. :)

Hi RemusLupinFan!
Thank you! And by the way, congratulations on being a Prefect! I know it happened ages ago, but I never got to congratulate you, on that, and on graduating (if I'm not mistaken).

Thank you! Perspective is probably the hardest. Not because it's a hard concept to grasp, but because it's a lot of patience and time that you have to invest.
I do take a bit of a break from perspective when I'm drawing for myself. That's why there's not whole lot of environments here.
Thanks again.

Hi shraker! Is good to see you. I promise I'll answer your owl sometime soon.

I might actually do something about costumes one of these days.
And yes, Nirvana jeans rocks. And come to think about it, the whole grunge look it's pretty cool.

Ahem, Lupin has that eye color, because I have a classmate that has light brown hair (almost blondish) and her eyes are the same color. And it looks really good. And I thought it might be cool if Lupin's hair and eyes had the same color.
The truth is, I think JK didn't tell us Remus' eye color for a reason. I'm guessing his eyes are going to be either golden/yellowish or blue.

I really don't know. I thought about it. But I came up with another question instead of an answer: if his eye color changed, would that be the same for all werewolfs? and if that's the case, would they all have the same eye color or would it change accordingly to the person?
And I think after all that thought process my neurons died and didn't think about it much more.

Probably not. But I guess it's good fanfiction material

I know! For some reason I cannot picture her with the pig snout

I guess she'd look more like a typical punk kid. But for some reason there's no way I can picture her like that.
So I'm going for the very stylized and romanticized version of Tonks :)

Nope, I actually draw Harry Potter to get away from heavy perspective drawing :D

It'd take me a long time to do it properly, and, in my opinion, the environments in the movies work really well. It's probably the only thing I think works well in the movies (at least so far). So I really didn't feel all that compelled to draw them, plus I'd really need to sit down and do a lot of research to do them.

Hey caladan, awesome awesome stuff.

I have a question for you though, would you mind if i threw some colors onto your Reamus/Dumbldee-dor picture? Just for personal practice? I wouldn't be using it for profit at all, and that pic is just achin for some colors. If not, no biggie (just trying to respect your art's integrity!) and either way keep up the great work :tu:

Oh boy...

I hope you don't mind caladan, but I went ahead and tossed some colors onto that picture and I came up with two slightly different variations (if you want me to remove them just say so)...

Right Here (http://students.bradley.edu/~mstach/Pictures/Lupin-Dumbledor-COLORSBluetint.jpg) and Right Here (http://students.bradley.edu/~mstach/Pictures/Lupin-Dumbledor-COLORSFinal.jpg)

The first one has a blue overlay gradient tint to it, so it looks slightly different from the second one. (Not to mention that the glow on Fawkes sticks out much more, and that it's my fav. :p) Hope you enjoy :) (I didn't start a seperate thread, because it's your work, I just colored it) :)

That was my original idea. I wanted it to look springlike. Like when the rain stopped and there's some sun peaking through the clouds, but everything's still very humid. (hope that made some sense)

Thanks! Yes, I didn't think it was depressing, because Tonks is OK at the end of OotP. But, my friend has some funny ideas of what depressing is

Ahem...after having my friend two years drilling me with why Tonks and Remus are made for each other (even though there's like 2% canon evidence), I have to say that she convinced me. But don't tell anybody, I'm not all that happy about having been convinced :)
I only had one OTP, and it's one of those pairings that nobody cares about, I have a couple of drawings about them. I should post them one of these days (I'm afraid people will laugh, though).

I have a drawing of Lily with the Marauders, but I need to put some color on it.

NYCwitch920
Thank you for the comment. I'm glad you liked DD, he's one of my fave characters. And the "lion man", whoever he is I think his description rocks
About the trio and the kids in general. I don't have anything of them alone, but I do have them with some of the grownups. I just have a bunch of drawings and sketches that I need to finish. I'll put them up when I clean them up.
And once again, thanks.

SiriusLivez
Thank you! I don't paint traditionally, though. There's certain effects that would be really hard to do without some photoshop tricks ;)

icklibogg
The time it takes me to do a painting or drawing varies a lot. And it usually depends on detail and how much perspective do I need to use (and how accurate do I want to be about it). The painting of DD and Lupin took me 2 days to finish it. But, the Tonks/Remus at St. Mungo's took me 4 to 5 hs.
It varies a lot. And thank you!

hpfan14
Thanks for the comment! Glad you and your mum liked the pictures. It's always extra pressure when you show your stuff to an artist. Mostly because what I generally do is not really "art", but translations of other people's ideas into visual ones. And, well, you're not really exposing yourself a whole lot by doing so.

Well, i first thought that werewolfs should have a spectrum of different colour eyes depending on what phase the moon was in when they were bitten...... and then i realized that they would only be bitten during the full moon *DUH*,........so then i thought that their eyes should definatly change when their bitten (because it's cooler) and that all werewolves should have different colour eyes but all share the same trademark feature like a cat's eye pupil or something like that,..... aaaand then i thought that this was probably a rhetorical question  so I hope this takes a shorter time to read than it took to type :D

After looking at these things for months I just feel compelled to say how much I love the masterpieces that you've so diligently worked upon. Everything about your paintings is so wonderful, my personal favorite being Remus in his late 30's and the one of him holding back Harry. Especially love your depections of Tonks, and it's the best I've seen.

I thought about that too. But if that's the case then it would be so easy to identify them (if they all share a very visible trait), and then they would get chased more frequently by angry mobs

I guess in canon they're just regular people. But yes, it'd be so cool if they somehow had an advantage or a cooler trait. At least to balance out a tiny bit all the negative aspects of lycanthropy.

Sort of like that Michael Fox movie that I cannot recall the title. He was a teenage werewolf and had like superpowers or something. Hmm...maybe that's a lame comparison to do  (and it also gives away how old I'm becoming :D ).

The rest of the work is simply spectacular! You captured the spirit of movement in the battle scenes and power in Remus's face in both of the DoM pics. It's a rather long story, but it derivates a lot from comic books (and me and my friends being too geeky).

Hi hobgoblins!
Costuming is really one of those things that I'd love to know more. I have a really good time coming up with it, but it'd be awesome to know much more. Like actual fabrics, how to make them, etc. And thank you, that was a huge compliment

It depends on the amount of detail and perspective that the image has. Let's see: the one of Lupin vs Malfoy took between 16 to 18 hs to finish. And the one of Lupin with Harry took some 8hs.
I'm not 100% sure, though, because I do not work on them straight through. I'm doing other stuff and I work on them whenever I have some time left. So they might have taken a bit longer (but not too much).

And thank you!

Hi Blue_Eyes! Thank you! And to my horror, Malfoy was acutally fun to design. :)

That was too funny! I saw the Little Mermaid a while ago, and I was really trying hard to remember what was going on in the movie and how it related to Harry Potter!
Thank you!

Hi hel101!
About the medium I use it varies, but it's generally Photoshop (version 7, I have to install the CS one of these days)
I do the drawing or sketch first in pencil, and then I paint the drawing in Photoshop.
The ones that are monochromes (like Harry and Lupin with the veil, or Remus and Sirius) are done with Copic Markers (only the grayscale set). And I adjust the Levels in Photoshop. And that's it.

And thanks!

Glad you got that! I sometimes think it would be rather cool if when Remus is thinking or distracted, he's playing with a little ball of fire in his hand (sort of like Pyro in X-men). But that's rather OC for him I suppose, so I just put it there to connect him to Fawkes, as you said.

And thank you so much for your comments. It really is tons of help to know how the images and ideas are coming across.

You know? I'm not a big fan of the baddies in the HP world. However, when I was drawing Malfoy I couldn't help but to find it really compelling to actually draw the guy. So I might end up doing some of the bad guys.

Oh! And thanks for the comment on Malfoy's robes. I didn't know if it was going to work or not. But it looks like he really needs some snake patterns on his clothing to make him a bit more mean :)

Thank you so much! And yes, I'm trying to become an artist. Well, not artist really. But I'd love to do storyboards and environment design, for either movies or games.

oooo, oooo, u can do environmental design for my future video game producing company, your work would be perfect for it, lol, itd be free open environments with people and lots of texture :). j/k, but that would be cool, youll be great in any form of art :) ;).

Hey Caladan! I've finally joined the forums!

What's up? Are you done with the borads for next week?

Anyway, haven't seen the DoM battle painting. Looks cool. You should really board the whole sequence you know. It'd be great.
Lighting looks cool too. The Prophecy in Neville's hand works great. And the curses too.

And you need to post the drawings of your OTP. And don't worry, people will laugh for sure :p But I'll support you :D

Yeah, and tell Danni that she needs to stop bugging people with the Remus/Tonks thing.

Anyway, cheers, see you at school.

I just wanted to say that your artwork is beautiful! I think the way you designed Remus may be one of the closest interpretations I've ever had the pleasure of seeing.

Your skill with painting could easily hold its own in any digital art community if you chose to join one.

I thought about that too. But if that's the case then it would be so easy to identify them (if they all share a very visible trait), and then they would get chased more frequently by angry mobs

they could have markings on their spine or some where that's not so obvious so they would get chased less frequently by angry mobs and still be cool!!

Hmm...maybe that's a lame comparison to do
No its not lame, in the movie he had heightend senses and that would be a good superpower (when their not a werewolf) because its useful and discrete :eyebrows:

I think the movie's called "TeenWolf" It's your archetypal 80's movie ,kid turns in to werewolf , kid wins basketball tournament as werewolf, kid becomes most popular werewolf, kid gets girl who likes him for him and not just for being a werewolf! they don't make 'em like they used to!
I loved that film as a kid but i saw it the other day and it's rubbish, Michael J Fox looked more like chewbacca than a werewolf! (I still love it though)
(and it also gives away how old I'm becoming ).
I know what you mean anything older than a foetus and your considered past it these days (now that does make me sound old!)
anyway, the new pictures are erm.... *searches thesaurus for a word that hasnt been used*....phantasmagoric! your Remus is the coolest! I like the anime action style but with the highly individual faces (which I feel always lets anime down) and I agree with moebius you should storyboard the whole thing!

Thanks for the encouragement shraker, but trust me, you're going to laugh (and a lot)!
But, yeah, I'll probably put them up. I think they're really cute together.
thats the great thing with computers hysterical laughter thats represented by this ----> :rotfl: isnt quite so cutting.
I'm racking my brains trying to think who they are!

sorry this post is really long I got carried away by the 80's movies!

caladan, I must say that you are extremely talented. I love the MoM Malfoy vs. Lupin picture. It's so dynamic that I almost expect them to duke it out as soon as I stop looking at it. Lupin is beautiful in contrapposto. I'm an art student myself, and I can never manage to get a body to look human, let alone alive, but you do it magnificently.

Quite remarkable. I love in the first picture, in the DOM, how there's so much tension and action in Lupin's body and in Lucius'. Very realistic and powerful. Overall, your drawings are original and tender. Your Lupin is very sweet and sorrowful, and cut by so many scars that he looks as though he might break at any moment. Very intriguing.

Wow, caladan! Yet another amazing work! *is floored*

Lucius' clothing has incredible detail. (I'm even drooling over the back of Lucius' head)

But Remus, wow, Remus looks quite the hero here. *sigh*

Wow. There are so many people with real talent in the world, but when one stands out from the crowd it really smacks you in the face.

Are you a professional artist? If not, why not?!?!?!? That is seriously the kind of quality that deserves a job.

great stuff, i love the way you capture a almost 'darker side' to harry potter in your paintings, which is fantastic. Do you ever sell them?Keep up the good work.

Wow! The new stuff is great, that's exactly how I pictured Harry! I also like the part of Lucius that we can see, his hair is great!
