Woot! My third thread. What a role Im on :)

Well anyway, a few months ago I had a thread specifically for my icons and such but unfortunatly had some problems with them getting hotlinked and such but I do believe things have gotten far better and decided to start sharing my graphics work with the general public again. Even better, I'd like to make this thread open to everyone to post there icon graphics work as to avoid the surge of individual graphic threads. Wouldnt it be nice if we could all just pull together into one thread?

Anyway, a few rules I guess should be layed out for everyone to be aware of.


Please post only your work. Any posts of work that is not your own will be reported
Please keep all graphics work appropriate and in accordance with COS Family Friendly policy (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=22996). and here (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=22997)
Only Harry Potter graphics
Please post only icon/avatar sized or small signature graphics. No large banners
If you decide to take a graphic please comment that you are snagging it.
Please, if you are using off site credit the maker.
Please do not hotlink. Save it to your computer and host it on your own bandwidth.
NO REQUESTS. If you have a request please privatly owl the graphic maker.

Hi Evita!

I really like the way you've used lighting effects on many of them. Particularly on your second icon post, the fourth icon on the top line. Hermione's hair looks like the sun is rising behind it. How did you achieve that?

And if I was Evanna it would be really spooky to see myself made into an avatar :)

No I just blured the skin and sharpened the lips and eyes abit. :)

For that Hermione graphic all I did was use one light texture that I made awhile ago and set it to soft light :) Quite easy. Yes, I'd be a bit creeped out if people started making icons of me too :lol: It would be interesting to see what they did with it!

About the brushes... I made some, and downloaded some... I use Corel Pant Shop Pro X, by the way, in case you want to know...

Just 4 right now that I just made. My four favorite ships! Do you have any idea how hard it is to make a Severus/Lily icon using the actual actors and not make Alan look like a dirty old man. I tried. I meant for him to look younger.. *rambling*

I've been taking a good look at how other people make their graphics and I realised that I generally prefer to choose one colour for my images and make that the base colour. So I spent a little while on this one, as a first attempt to 'break the mould':

weasleygirl: That's very pretty. I like the way you've got the text so big by dropping it off the edge, but you still know what it says.
Rupert looks a bit tired. Must have been the end of a long day's filming.

Evita32 I love your graphics they are amazing i mean some of them are justs scenes from the movie and you have managed to turn them into fantastic icons you are an ispiration I hope one day my work may come close to yours (with A LOT of hard work :)) I'm off to go and make some icons

Are you quite sure?

OK. I love the first two a lot. I really like the way you have chosen a different colour background for each person, and the colour suits their personality or House. But I think the picture of Ginny looks a bit funny. Was it a low res photo to start with? Or maybe it has been sharpened a little too much?
On Luna, I like that you've given her skin a tone but kept her lips and eyes true coloured, but she looks a bit 'lemony' for my preference. It does make her look dreamy though.

By the way, I love the Dumbledore's Army sig *big thumbs up* Great idea.

Sholeigh- Love the color effect. Its a very nice contrast and I love the way your text almost glows. Really I fight with text all the time... never wants to work for me :(

Thanks!!! The cedric one is my fave 2 ....I TOTALLY agree about the Pansy and ginny one...v.bad choice of effect luckily I kept each one as an original PS document so I can easily edit it them. I love the next bunch of icons you've done ur work blows my mynd!!!

I did another version of my Hogwarts icon... its with the picture for the Base challenge but I dont think Im going to submit this one. Its way too similar to something Ive already made but thought I would share.... and yes Ginerva is spelled wrong... never fixed it beecause I didnt care for the icon that much.

What program are you using?

You need to change the image resolution to 72. Go to Image > Image Size > then change the resolution to 72. Then, change the font size and type. :D

Good stuff hpnthygof- I like the capture icon the best. Its really nice. Its nice to see that you are experimenting with color too, only thing perhaps would be the clarity of the image itself. Im an anti fuzz/blurry person. :lol: , I love the quality and sharpness again of the "Capture" icon

If you mean the *sigh* teardrop, then you just use a custom shape (click on the line tool and hold it down to get the alternate tools). I'm not sure if there's a tear shape there. If not, just make an oval and erase it til you get one. Then add a white stroke to it and make a highlight if you want.

Ooh those are all very nice :) I love the soft glow in some of them. I do think however the Lily icon could have been cropped a bit differently. She seems a bit too low and the brush really throws the balance off. Beautiful coloring with the Hermione/Viktor banner especially

I love the Viktor/Hermione one as well, but I think the trio in the 'friendship' one seems a little too 2D. The others are a beauty, though.

I bought my copy of Photoshop from Ebay - not recommended. Most of the copies on there aren't real.

I like it, but you need to use a better quality cap: the image is grainy. There's also a random black line at the top left which you need to erase. I hesitate to say anything about text, because I'm awful at using it, but I'd say that the colour doesn't complement the rest of the icon. I'd also recommend Dafont (http://www.dafont.com/), a cool place to get lots of purdy fonts.

A good place to help you get started making graphics is Icon tutorial (http://community.livejournal.com/icon_tutorial/). Look around in their archive. They have pretty much everything you need there. After you learn the basics it's just messing around in the program. :D

Much better! Only thing now is that if you wanted to make your text visible, I'd recommend adding a white brush up the right hand side of your graphic, but it depends on whether or not you want your text readable. Well done!

Someone has a really awesome Marauders signature. I really want to see it again, but I can't remember who has it.

I despise the movies, so I would never put pictures of the "actors" in my signature. Dan, Emma, and Rupert are NOT Harry, Hermione, and Ron to me. They look nothing like them, and act nothing like them. I need photoshop, cause I have some great icon ideas using Mary Grandpre's drawings. The one I have now is only temporary.

Since you both asked for a bit of critism I'll offer a bit :D

Natalie- Great stuff, you have come so far from when you first started. Be proud. One thing that would improve your graphics even more is if you improved the 'grainy-ness' of the faces. The best way to do this is to start out with a high quality and as high of definition as you can. Resizing too much can also cause grainy-ness. Another this is that perhaps trying to back off from the face a little bit. It will add varity :) Other then that maybe watch your contrast a bit. They are very good :tu:

Thanks so much....the harry 1 lol i saw a similar design on a livejournal somewhere a while ago and liked it, the don't leave thing was because I just thought it suited his facial expression, I really like your animation it's subtle and not over the top like others I have seenjust like what Evita said the clarity of the picture :D:D

Thanks evita ... i am proud sorta lol I think its defitntly being on here that has improved my graphics....i totally know what you mean about the face thing lol funnily enough one of the favourites of mine was the Wrong one where you can see neither of their faces....and i to tend to go a bit contrast happy sometimes because sometimes personally i feel it works but then it gets overdone and sloshy looking, Ive been using screencaps recently to make graphics out of as i think theres more vairty in the images like I actually like the Ginny/Harry one but the clarity of it isn't very good
Anywhoo the support staff at school have decided to go on strike (very selfish in my opinon as i only have 25 days left at school and have much needed revision and coursework to do grrrr lol) So Im off to make some more graphics taken what you have said into hand

Many thanks for taking the time to reply. We're in agreement on the Harry pic quality. The original image was too dark to sharpen much :sigh: One of the reasons I made it the reflection of Harry, hoping I could get away with it. I'm going to see what I can do by hand, but I won't update my contest entry. This is just for my personal improvement, not to help me win the contest :)

I use Paintshop Pro 9... free trial download of Paintshop Pro 10 can be found at jasc.com. For a freeware program for graphics makers just starting out I would definintly recommend GIMP.

Nice work Natalie! I like the last one the best. Subtle coloring is me favorite kind. You definitly improved upon the grainyness of the faces. Fluer might need a little work up. You could maybe work on the contrast of the faces a bit. They look a bit flat. The Sorting hat one is very nice :D The boarder in second icon (harry/ginny) is a bit distracting. Bright pink and rainbow colors really dont fit the mood. The text brush would work but with the boarder its a bit much. Perhaps you can work on cropping a bit too, the weasley twins one is nice. But overall a nice improvment. Great work!

hehe that darn fleur 1 i just couldnt get right and it was a case of the more i did the worse it got :S The rainbow one hehe i was in a girly mood...cropping sometimes its a case of i want the whole face in the graphic but im going to have to be a bit more adventerous i think because im like scared ppl wont know who the person is if i dont crop it well enough

First off, great work! Love the vibrant colors of the top row. I especially love the disposition of the Fawkes icons. I think thats the best of this bunch. You have nice cropping and I like the use of brushes. Ive never been a fan or user of the swirly brushes (like in hermione ) but it fits very nicely into the icon. The contrast of the Potter and Remus icons could be maybe worked up a bit or perhaps a bit of color put back into their faces. They look a little drained but they still look nice. The faces in general should be worked up a little bit so they are sharper and more crisp. Text isnt bad :) Appropriate for each icon, the text in the Ron icon (next to Fawkes) is a bit hard to read. A darker color would work better. Overall, great work :D

I have made an icon that is 100 x 75 pixels but it is animated and therefore a very large file size. It is so large I cannot use it as my signature. But I would really like to share it with everyone. It is 1002074 bytes. Is it ok if I post it?

Well that isnt that much over the limit for signatures, Im sure it would be ok. If however it really slow up the page maybe just post a link to it :)

Truth be told, until I put the commas in, I was confused too! My favorite part is at the end with Aurora dancing with Philip and then Hermione and Krum. These two are made because I'm fooled today. :p Made these as an avatar and a sig (I think it's small enough for an icon too) for the Leaky Mug Cafe, you know, that sillyness...... *blushing for shame*

Nice icons! My favourites are the "Torn" and Filch ones.
I like how you show 1/4 of Harry only which makes him look like he's torn, not complete, if you know what I mean...

Hi everyone!

Because the Graphics Contest has been put back a day, I've been able to work on that animation I posted here for feedback last week. What I've done is to apply savage sharpening to Harry, and then to smooth everything out again by hand. I've posted both images below so you can see what happened. Harry is definately sharper, but I think his expression has changed and I'm not sure I like it anymore. There is just something that looks wrong, and I'm no artist to be able to define what that 'something' is.
One other thing I did was to make Harry blink, and I think that works OK. So here you are:

That whole set of icons seem to fit together, they have a feeling of sadness about them. By that I mean I love them :tu: . The 'Filch: Beware' idea works very well. 'Harry, Alone' is my favourite. He is alone, but Hedwig is on her way :) I wonder if you could make another version of that, to expand the 'Alone' idea? What if the darkness behind the word 'alone' could be a shadow, of Voldemort maybe? Sorry, just my ramblings.

Have you noticed that using a black keyline on an image makes it appear darker, while a white keyline brightens it? I think that's why I prefer the first one.

I think it works well. It has one base colour, which I always like. It's clear but not over sharp. The crop is good because she's looking back into the frame.
But she isn't looking at the text, so the word almost gets lost - sort of understated magic. Overall: very nice :)

Save your graphics under PNG. They will look much brighter and better quality that way :)

I use Photoshop because it happens to be on my machine, but this thread (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=3320) has links to many free graphics programmes that you can download. I think a lot of people use The Gimp and find it works well.

That collection is wonderfully bright. The Cedric set is very nice, particularly the 'so young' one. The three dots over his eye are quite interesting, it makes me think of a scar.
