mwbashful18 April 29th, 2006, 6:37 pm Well, since there seems to be such a love of this man on CoS Forums, I think we should glorify him even more with a thread dedicated to anything and everything about him.
I would just like to say that I found a strange video store which has a lot of old VHS movies and managed to get ahold of Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny. I also found Closet Land there to buy, but it's VHS. I'd rather rent it if possible. And then I plan on going back tonight to get Michael Collins because I forgot a paper driver's license form which I had used for identification, so Identity Theft Warning Light flashed in my head, lol. Me and my bad memory, walking out without remembering it -- Argh.
And also, had a Sense and Sensibility party last night with two friends who had never seen it before. I can officially say that I now have a friend who understands the liking, and another who's fancying of his hands has increased to total liking of him. lol.
cazzaranda April 29th, 2006, 6:52 pm Here! Here!
Well, since there are threads here dedicated to just about everything else under the sun, why not glorify the man who gave us Snape!!!
It would be hard to go off topic when it's stated like that.
Hermione75 April 29th, 2006, 7:44 pm Yippy Skippy!!!!! Great thread, Bash..
Im still wanting to know if AR is going to be at any film festivals in the USA this year. I am researching it, so I'll let everyone know.
mwbashful18 April 29th, 2006, 11:52 pm Are you Chicago, Hermione75, because I am on the same track you are? I'm going to be in Chicago next year starting in September and I am hoping the Chicago International Film Festival gives us Snowcake! Last year it had some relatively large indie films like The Squid and the Whale, Bee Season, The Weather Man (Closing Night), Havoc, and Elizabethtown opened the festival(Susan Sarandon showed). Also, Mrs. Henderson Presents was there too.
I'm hoping that Snowcake or Perfume: Story of a Murderer are premiered there, or both together. I would pay top dollar for a ticket to the first night's showing in case anyone in particular is there.
And then, Seattle is premiering My Name Is Rachel Corrie the last I checked, although somewhere in San Diego a theatre is looking to take it up. I think Seattle is actually the better choice. Chicago would have been better, both for me and for its Broadway chances, but hey, maybe it'll be the little engine that could and it'll get brought over to Broadway all the way from the West Coast!
cazzaranda April 30th, 2006, 12:14 am (Susan Sarandon showed)
I thought she got killed off in Team America, World Police!!! LOL
Actually it's me who's in (near) Chicago. I think you said you were going to be attending school here in a thread which no longer exists.:grumble:
And by the way, if I were you I would go back to that video store and see how much they want for that VHS of Closet Land. As far as I can tell, it's not available on Region 1 DVD. And since it's pretty rare to find, the price is up there. I just happen to know someone who would be glad to take it off your hands, after you watched it first, of course.:D
You know how to reach me.
mwbashful18 April 30th, 2006, 1:43 am Well, I got my little license thing back. It was a driving permit from a few years back. I've all but given up trying to understand as well as like driving. I'm going to Chicago for school so hello public transportation. And if things work, hello London.
Yes, they have The Winter Guest on VHS, Closet Land on VHS, Rasputin to rent on VHS (watching tomorrow -- goody goody gumdrop), Michael Collins to rent on DVD (watching in 10 minutes).
See, I hate VCRs and I have a glowing collection of DVDs, so buying the Closet Land would mean I'd watch it once somewhere and then sell it. Who was it that was interested in it? I don't have the money right now because every dollar is going towards my trip to England for this summer. But I doubt anyone will be buying it soon. It was just so weird to be browsing the wall of VHS movies stacked up, and to just turn around and be face to face with it at eye level. Just, odd.
Hermione75 April 30th, 2006, 1:56 am I'm hoping that Snowcake or Perfume: Story of a Murderer are premiered there, or both together. I would pay top dollar for a ticket to the first night's showing in case anyone in particular is there.
No, But I have traveled there many times.
I am Planning to fly out for the Film Festival...especially if Perfume or Snowcake is being played.
I have several Pics from Snowcake.
So, if any one has any info on Chicago Festival please give us a heads up!!!
I think that an AR play is playing/ going to be playing in Seattle.
know someone who would be glad to take it off your hands, after you watched it first, of course.
You know how to reach me.
Than I can take it off Cazz's Hand...I heard closet land is really good
cazzaranda April 30th, 2006, 2:04 am See, I hate VCRs and I have a glowing collection of DVDs, so buying the Closet Land would mean I'd watch it once somewhere and then sell it. Who was it that was interested in it?
Hello, that would be me! Can I send you a check?
Desraelda April 30th, 2006, 2:05 am I would just like to say that I found a strange video store which has a lot of old VHS movies and managed to get ahold of Rasputin: Dark Servant of Destiny.
As of yesterday, e-bay had Rasputin on Region 1 DVD. The seller had nine of them, and I ordered one (buy-it-now). Just under $17 with shipping.
cazzaranda April 30th, 2006, 2:23 am As of yesterday, e-bay had Rasputin on Region 1 DVD. The seller had nine of them, and I ordered one (buy-it-now). Just under $17 with shipping.
whoo hoo......I am heading over there right now!!!
thanks for the tip, Des
candescence April 30th, 2006, 3:30 am Going to check right now....thanks for that Des!!!
And glad to see this thread here...this is it for me over here!!!
Desraelda April 30th, 2006, 3:35 am Good luck to everyone. I've been spreading the word so I hope you all are successful. But at least we know they are available.
Let me know if you are able to get one.
MoonysAngel April 30th, 2006, 3:38 am Hey, for all you looking at those region 1 Rasputins....they are more than likely bootlegs...one of the neutral feedbacks stated it was a copy. A good copy, but nevertheless a copy. HBO has never released a legal region 1 verison of this...there are plenty region 2 dvds if you have an all-region player.
I don't mean to upset anyone, I just don't like seeing sellers out there doing things that may not be quite on the up-and-up. The decision to purchase is ultimately up to you, 'cause it's your money.
And mwbashful18, if caz doesn't want that copy of Closet Land, I do!!!
cazzaranda April 30th, 2006, 3:46 am And mwbashful18, if caz doesn't want that copy of Closet Land, I do!!!
I got first dibs!!!!!!
I am having trouble with paypal on ebay tonight....I don't care if it's bootlegged....it's got to be better than VHS....
Hey candescence, good to see you here!
mwbashful18 April 30th, 2006, 5:02 am I've sent a message via HBO's website asking for them to release a Region 1 DVD instead of the VHS. I said that there is a large audience for it and it's strange that it's one of the few of the company's films to not be available for purchase. I'm glad I got my copy of Something the Lord Made! Bootlegs come with the stigma of being wrong, so I'm hard pressed to just watch Rasputin tomorrow and see how I like it. If I'm that crazy for it, I'll try to get it.
Closet Land is a problem as I don't know of any time when I'll be able to get it and watch it. I might try seeing if I can rent it first there. If I can, I can possibly give anyone who wants the VHS the number to the store and maybe you can set up an arrangement for them to ship it to you if you pay for the shipping. They might -- it's one of those privately-owned stores.
I watched Michael Collins. Not enough Eamon, which, as it now stands, is my first favorite name for boys. I have a joke game with friends where you come up with potential life predictions like where you'll live, where you'll travel to, the kind of person you'll marry, and such, and also, we have our ideal names for when we have kids. Friends always have the typical ones like Jason or Zack, but I prefer 1) Eamon, 2) Alan, and not entirely because of the actor, I've liked it since Jurassic Park, lol, and 3) Andrew. For girl names, all I've got is Isabel.
Anyhoo, not enough Eamon in Michael Collins. And it does seem to be really flawed with the facts. They don't explain much in the way of Jonathan Rhys Myers' appearance and Valera's relationship with him, and much of the film is jumpy and doesn't shift or translate between scenes well. And I think AR finally had difficulty with a role. He seems very unsure of the delivery of some of the lines during his formal conversations with Liam Neeson's character. Though I did enjoy his outburst scene and his ability to have delivered perfectly in the first take his lines for the rally he holds where there looks to be 1000 people or thereabouts. I read that they basically got these people together in the same square, set up the shot, and then told him to go up on the platform and say his lines to all these extras whom he didn't know. Evidentally, he wigged out before the shot, but managed to pull himself together enough. I like that he seems shy.

I should have known something was up. One of those too good to be true things. If it is indeed an illegal copy ... and I don't see how a copy could be legally sold ... I will report it to e-bay. I already paid for the DVD yesterday, so it's too late for me to cancel the order.
cazzaranda April 30th, 2006, 5:33 am I have been trying to confirm a purchase but paypal won't let me...it keeps giving me an error message. the seller has good ratings tho
I guess we'll have to wait and see
candescence April 30th, 2006, 12:48 pm It really is a surprise to me that HBO does not have Rasputin widely available in DVD format, it is both one AR's best movies and HBO's as well, it even won an Emmy, a SAG and a GG. Incredible performance and production. Let us know if they send you a reply.
Can you legally sell a copy?? Or is that some sort of copyright infringement?? I wonder...
So Michael Collins...I liked it but it is not my favorite AR movie, and I love Liam Neeson as well. I thought that scene at the beginning was brilliant with AR, I love how he commands the screen amongst all of those people, he has such presence, it is one of his best qualities as an actor, the ability for him to act without even speaking a word.
Truthfully I did not know a lot of the history there, all I did know was from history class, and that was not much. I remember on Saint Patrick's Day one year we discussed the IRA ( I went to school in Boston, huge Irish community) and we touched on the subject. After watching the movie I still did not know much.
I really wish that My Name Is Rachel Corrie was going to play in Broadway as I would have gone to see it, there is no chance of me getting to Seattle to do so!! And as far as AR doing the festival scene, I wonder if he would be at any of them? It seems to me that he has already made the rounds for SnowCake at the larger film festivals and international ones, and he has a two movies currently in production and the play...plus I am sure there will be a promotional tour at some point for Perfume?? Busy man!!
Oh and yes, that shy quality of his really does make him even more attractive doesn't it??
mwbashful18 April 30th, 2006, 5:53 pm Yes, I do have a thing for the shy timid types, but AR does have that little extra charm and sense of humor. And all of that loud outrageousness which shows up in his films makes me wonder where it comes from, :p . Again, I reference The View episode as well as the Conan clip and the Charlie Rose one and how extremely quiet and lovely he is, compared to say, Sheriff George, and you wonder exactly how obnoxious he can get when goofing around.
He's only so far gone to the Berlin Film Festival for Snowcake and as far as I've heard, no others. However, there is the possibility that he will be at the Chicago Film Festival if Perfume is premiering there as Germany's entry. And Snowcake, if that is there too, would be a good opportunity to do more promotion. Besides, he'll be done with filming commitments on Villa Golitsyn and HP by then, and will only have promoting to do and putting the final touches on preparation for the play to open in Seattle. It is set for the spring season at the theatre it's set for. That's what I read.
Hermione75 April 30th, 2006, 6:54 pm HBO has never released a legal region 1 verison of this...there are plenty region 2 dvds if you have an all-region player.
Well, I guess Im going to eventually look into buying an all region player...Im tired of waiting for the upper brass deciding when or if they release region 2 DVD's.
Waiting......I am not good at this....LOL
me that he has already made the rounds for SnowCake at the larger film festivals and international ones, and he has a two movies currently in production and the play...plus I am sure there will be a promotional tour at some point for Perfume?? Busy man!!
Is not the Chicago Film festival a International one as well? If not there HAS to be some big international film Festival in the US.....I hope that if SC and Perfume are released AR will be there...but who's to know his exact plans??
And it does seem to be really flawed with the facts. They don't explain much in the way of Jonathan Rhys Myers' appearance and Valera's relationship with him
Well, my hubby (He use to be a history professor) agrees with you on the facts. Myself, however, was not too concerned about the history inconsistences....I was too busy looking for AR.
So its nice to know someone who's an AR fan can keep us in line with our history facts when the rest of us are drooling over the tv screen.
should have known something was up. One of those too good to be true things. If it is indeed an illegal copy ... and I don't see how a copy could be legally sold ... I will report it to e-bay. I already paid for the DVD yesterday, so it's too late for me to cancel the order.
Well if it is...No fault of your own. Looke on the bright side...at least you got one!
mwbashful18 May 1st, 2006, 4:34 am Well, I realized the flaw in MC. There wasn't enough Eamon (AR). And I don't say that in a drool way. What I mean is the movie had factual inconsistencies as well as lacked a strong backbone. It was interesting at points with Liam Neeson, at other points, you were bored with Julia Roberts and were wondering about the sequence of events and trying to catch up with what was going on. And most importantly, for AR to play Eamon and then not have much screen time, it is really annoying because he captures your attention and is the actor who draws you in, but then he disappears into hiding for twenty minutes. You were left with this gap of power, his absence made the movie less interesting.
Though I can say that, if the final HP book has what I think it will have for Snape, then that scene when AR is crying near the farmhouse he's hiding at in the end of the film comforts me in knowing he will handle Snape VERY WELL. But that's only if Snape's fate is what I think it is.

Another AR crying scene in the following trailer for Snow Cake. It's a fabulous trailer and looks to be a great movie. No need to say that Alan is wonderful so I won't say it, but judging from the trailer, if he and Sigourney Weaver aren't at least Oscar nominated, I will be very disappointed.
http://fortissimofilms.com/catalogue/title.asp?filmID=264
mwbashful18 May 1st, 2006, 4:10 pm THANK YOU SO MUCH DESRAELDA!!!! I have been waiting for a trailer for so long and they really give the goods in that!!! The crying scene is amazing!!!! He's bloody brilliant!!! I'm telling you, Oscarworthy. And I read online from a guy who'd seen the movie at the Hong Kong film festival who said that midway through the movie there is a scene where everyone in the audience, and evidentally this is happening all over at screenings, just broke out in thunderous applause and whooping after Rickman spoke. I think they went flippant over that particular scene where he's crying. I've never seen a movie where a man actually breaks down like that and is literally weeping. I mean, some tear up, but not like that. Not a real fit. He's amazing.
Desraelda May 2nd, 2006, 12:04 am It's a real knockout isn't it. I've got it on my desktop and watch it every day. I know one other person who saw the movie and she was quite overcome by it. I'm so afraid that the movie won't get wide release and they won't show it in my little town. But if it's getting such a good reception at all the film festivals, we stand a good chance, with a good chance for a Region 1 DVD. Hopefully, the Academy will recognize Alan's performance and at least nominate him for an Oscar. Just from the trailer, he earned it.
mwbashful18 May 2nd, 2006, 2:00 am I've watched the trailer a couple times now, showing a few people and such. I hate that they showed six minutes of the movie, but I also am overjoyed that they did. I really want to see how the crying scene pans out as you can see he is getting into the bunk bed afterwards since he looks so exhausted.
This movie is just another reason why I would be the happiest person alive if I were to meet him. He seems like an extraordinary man and I am truly jealous of all of his friends, lol. I am impressed by his scenes in this as he doesn't normally play the frumpy emotional types. This isn't the suave calculating role we're used to seeing.
Luckily an Oscar predictions website is posting his and Weaver's names now as Oscar contenders, though they are wrong to have them listed so far down the list. They have Johnny Depp listed ahead of him -- and for the PotC sequel. Rubbish. I'm certain this will be picked up by a studio -- especially after all of the positive comments it's received. I'm certain we'll see something good come of the Tribeca Film Festival because that is the place for the studios to see what kind of opening the movie could have in, at least, a limited release, in the US. I think it will do very well. Better than most of the teen rubbish they create on the assembly line these days. If studios took a chance on The Cave, they surely should take a chance here! They'll actually get money!

What was your friends reaction to the trailer?
I saw a clip a while ago showing how Alan ends up in the bunk bed. He couldn't sleep where he was and wandered around until he found the bunk beds. He didn't realize Linda was in the top bunk. He seemed dazed and disoriented. It's interesting that the original clip didn't show him in the crying scene and now we get to see the follow-up.

Great description.

At least they're on the list and it's a start.

The movie apparently did well in the Berlin Film Festival. It's set for USA release sometime in September, but that's pending. I guess that means the studio can change its mind. Hopefully, there will be at least a Region 1 DVD.
candescence May 2nd, 2006, 3:38 pm OMG Des...I watched the trailer and I am hooked now. It looks like an amazing movie, and I can not wait to see it. He is so worthy of this sort of role and so is Sigourney Weaver. Can't wait to see that crying scene, I felt the tears welling up just at the trailer!
mwbashful18 May 2nd, 2006, 4:21 pm I heard Nobel Son was the September release with a potential Halloween-ish release for Perfume, and a November/December release for Snowcake because of the wintry theme. Besides, Snowcake is the one with a shot at Oscars, and to release it in early fall is a bad move. Million Dollar Baby was released just before New Year and that was victorious. I think if Snowcake takes a limited release on December 22, they'll have Christmas to bank on its "feel-goodness" as well as the wintry vibe, and it will be one of the movies on everyone's mind going into nominations deliberations. To have a build-up of AR in September with a dramedy (Nobel Son, here's to hoping it is good), followed by another period drama/horror in late October, then a later December release of Snowcake, plus the fact that everyone knows he is Severus in OotP next summer, the voters will have him on their minds and will be finally taking a look at him.

mwbashful18 May 3rd, 2006, 1:50 pm OMG!!! I watched Rasputin for the first time last night. Too bad that wasn't in theatres because then it would be easier to find on DVD and I would have seen it already and he would have gotten an Oscar!
Not only is that his most entertaining role but his best! I absolutely loved the lines and the way he played him. I wish he did more outrageous characters like that, which is why I am very much looking forward to the zaniness of Will Ludley in The Villa Golitsyn.
Favorite lines include the scene when he has lunch with the family and tells of his journey. This is paraphrasing but, "I traveled over 3000 miles to St. Petersberg and I would not eat for three days at a time and I had nowhere to stay, and I still managed to not touch the flesh!" That is classic. I will remember that one! Completely unexpected line from him that we all did a doubletake.
I also loved the scene after he is dancing and totally drunk and he falls over, then crawls up to the woman who, required his services recently, and he kisses her as everyone begins flipping out over what he is doing. Then he starts to bellow about being the tzarina's best pal. And the glory scene: a visual of the hand disappearing into the pants before pulling them down! Crazed. I loved it. I don't know which is more entertaining: the scene itself or the look on his face as he plays the scene.

At least he won the Emmy for that performance. I have the clip of his acceptance. I've only watched the movie a couple of times because Alan's performance is so powerful and really gets to me.

Then he goes on to tell about the naked monks ... and the Tsar's reaction to that was priceless.

The scene was great, but it was the look on his face that blew me away.
mwbashful18 May 3rd, 2006, 4:05 pm It is the look on his face that you have to admire. A look of complete satisfaction in what he's doing. It's crazy to see him so nuts in the role, particularly the ending when he's putting away the poisoned cakes and singing and drunk. He's too funny.
candescence May 3rd, 2006, 10:37 pm Yay!!! Another Rasutin fan...I love this movie. It is definitely his best role to date, at least IMO. He IS Rasputin to me, that is how good I think it is.
Where would one be able to find a clip of him winning that emmy??? I would love to see that!
And yes, that scene is great, the man has some of the most expressive looks I have ever seen, the way he can act without even a word is one of his best attributes...well that and he is incredible looking.
mwbashful18 May 3rd, 2006, 11:42 pm There is a pic of him on my computer desktop from the scene after he falls over at the tavern place when he's wearing the red shirt  . It's when he catches sight of the woman who required his services and is about to start crawling towards her. I have two other pics too from the movie, one which shows a little chest, :D , and another which is just a good close-up of him.
I was very moved by his role in Rasputin. Completely unhinged, I loved it!!! And again, the facial expressions during the Trouser Revelation scene! :nc: , I wonder what was running through his mind at that moment, lol.
I would say that it was his most original role because he never speaks like that. He always has the measured words and the controlled speech, so it was interesting to hear him rattling off dialogue, especially dialogue as crude as it was.
Rude Traveler: "What do I have behind my back?"
Rasputin: Annoyed, "A coin . . . a book, the Archbishop's b*lls, I don't know."
Excellent!:p
candescence May 4th, 2006, 1:53 pm Well I watched An Awfully Big Adventure last night...
Wow. First off, it was definitely a disturbing movie. That being said, I enjoyed it anyway. I figured out the end way before it so that was sort of odd, made it hard to watch that second scene with he and Stella. However, I did watch the first scene twice...and I will be watching that again and again...and again. My goodness that was realistic. Quite nice actually! LOL!
I thought it was a well acted movie, but have to say that before AR came on I was getting a little bored. I am not much of a Hugh Grant fan to begin with, so some of that stuff was unbearable for me to watch. However, as soon as AR came on to the screen I was hooked, per usual.
And Rasputin...yes an incredible performance there, truly incredible. Completely unhinged is exactly the right way to describe his performance there, and it was perfect as well.
mwbashful18 May 4th, 2006, 11:08 pm I actually like AABA too, though I don't pop it in too often. Though i do find the first and second scenes difficult because they don't leave much to the imagination. You almost wish he wasn't a perfectionist so that you don't feel a slight bit uncomfortable. Maybe I have a problem with the way it was filmed. It felt too voyeuristic or exploitative. And I do understand why he was so irritated at the girl who played Stella for not telling the cast that she was actually 20 and not 16 as she claimed. He structured his performance around the girl being young and not knowing what to do, basically expecting her to be a virgin. He didn't want to feel perverted is my best guess and so played the role more gentlemanly and quietly because he didn't want to scare her or anything.
I heard a director is interested in casting AR in a new political movie, but he is up against Al Pacino (hope he beats him, AR should have won that Emmy for StLM) and another. Also, new pics are up from Perfume -- http://europeanfilms.net/blog/?p=217
And Snowcake has its screening tonight at Tribeca, perhaps AR is there because of trying to get MNIRC into a theatre in NY. That would be nifty.
Desraelda May 4th, 2006, 11:40 pm Where would one be able to find a clip of him winning that emmy??? I would love to see that!
britbitsandclips.com. They have everything there. I've learned to check back every couple of weeks because they're always adding new clips.
I've also downloaded some audio clips from DH and AABA because those are movies I have no interest in seeing. He's in wonderful voice in both of them.
Trouser Revelation scene! , I wonder what was running through his mind at that moment, lol.
You have such a way with words. LOL. What was running through his mind? Just typical manly thoughts in such a moment. It comes out in his expression.
candescence May 5th, 2006, 1:11 am That scene in AABA really does not leave much to the imagination, but I did not feel at all uncomfortable watching it, I dunno, perhaps I should have? Regardless I did not, I think knowing that she was 20 eased it a bit for me, that and that he did not know the relationship.
Hermione75 May 5th, 2006, 3:22 am I still like Sense and Sensibility the best...
cazzaranda May 5th, 2006, 3:37 am Why don't we all just admit that we HATE seeing AR in the sack with another woman! Because we all want it to be US!!!
mwbashful18 May 5th, 2006, 3:40 am I was watching that scene with my mother who thinks he is at least a good actor but doesn't get much of the hot-and-bothered, warm-and-fuzzy feeling towards him as we do. The only real reaction I got out of her regarding how he looks is when I once showed her a pic of him from Barchester Chronicles as Slope. The slicked back hair worked for him in that as well as Die Hard, which also brought out a slight reaction. But other than that, nada. So watching AABA's love scenes is slightly unnerving because I personally am not bothered either. As it was said, they are quite nice. So it was uncomfortable to be the one who likes the scene. lol.
Though I much prefer Rasputin, perhaps because he REALLY seemed to be enjoying himself in that film. And I do love his acceptance speech for the award when he says Rasputin was a really good role, which makes him think they should create a category for Best Crummy Role. lol. Cute. He really got a long laugh out of the auditorium. And it was sort of a ha-ha! moment when he won, having to trek all the way from the back to the stage for the award. It was a "Look where you seated me, and I won!" moment.
cazzaranda May 5th, 2006, 4:06 am It had to be a bit uncomfortable watching "love scenes" with your mom...I bet your mom was more embarrassed than you. And I know what I'm talking about...LOL
I remember once a million years ago, when I was a teenager, my mom took me to the theatre to see a movie called "Women In Love" and there was a scene where two male actors were having a sort of dueling scene. They were both dressed in their birthday suits with all of their glorious manhood freely moving in the breeze....my mom reached over and put her hands over my eyes....LOL....the whole thing was embarrassing....the naked guys, and my mom doing that to me....
Anyway, I think that Slope was his most unattractive role (pysically) so it's surprising your mom got a rise out of that. I thought he was pretty handsome as Gruber, tho.....even tho he was a skinny little slip of a thing in those days...LOL
Am I being shallow enough?:D
mwbashful18 May 5th, 2006, 4:31 am See now while he was skinny back then (though I thought he looked in his best shape as Hans), she only saw a close-up of his face, which I believe is basically where the problem lies for her. She doesn't think he's all that attractive, which I will agree he is a bit of an acquired taste. But I very much love his eyes. But she likes to make fun that I like older men. Especially because I am . . . wait for it . . . 18, and he is 60 now. His birthday is five days before mine, and I have a friend who is very similar to AR whose birthday is a week after mine save for leap years. Funny. And Clive Owen is also on my screensaver with one pic of George Clooney. And this friend of mine is nine years older than me too. I like them older because boys are, well they're boys, plain and simple, meaning a man is a lot more attractive. Though this friend of mine I consider a guy, one level short of being a man. lol. His maturity level matches mine, basically. lol. I'm rambling now.
cazzaranda May 5th, 2006, 5:13 am I am going to have to disagree with you about him being in his best shape as Gruber. I'm thinking he looks pretty darn good as Snape...especially in that cut scene from GoF (and I know the arm movement he does is a bit bizarre, but just look at his physique while he's running toward the carriage...whoo hooo) and we are talking about a man who must have been 59 at the time.
He was awfully skinny in his younger days...tho not in an anorexic sense....but talk about aging gracefully!
Yeah, I have said before, his looks are an acquired taste...but it's good taste!
Clive Owen??? I don't see the appeal there...speaking as an old lady. I suppose you have seen "Close My Eyes".....a movie only redeemed by the sympathic AR character who has the best name ever (aside from Severus Snape) ...Sinclair! He's such a "Sinclair" in that movie. Not one to watch when "mum" is around.....LOL
And George Clooney used to be the most attractive on earth about ten years ago....I don't think he's aging as well as AR....and I don't like his politics but that's off topic. I don't much care for AR's politics either, but I'll leave it at that.
Oh, just wondering, but does anyone think that's a wig he was wearing in Mesmer? Only asking because I have received a pic of him on a movie set looking like he's wearing the Mesmer costume, but his hair is short and has lots of grey in it. Anyone know?
Desraelda May 5th, 2006, 3:22 pm I still like Sense and Sensibility the best...
That's because it's an overall great movie and Alan is the icing on the cake.
mwbashful18 May 5th, 2006, 8:46 pm I like George Clooney for the charm thing he has going, he doesn't smoke, he's got that dry sense of humor I like, and I like that he is politically active for good causes. The Darfur thing is good quality.
The same goes for AR. He has those qualities above and I think he's the finest actor there is . . . and his eyes are heavenly (amber-colored). I think AR is very active, you can tell he must be to still run around like he does in movies, but I would say he was physically in his best shape as Hans. Rasputin and Sense and Sensibility are close seconds, actually. Perhaps even better. I do like that his shoulders are broader now and his arms are more muscular. I never cared much for skinny guys. So yes, he does look better with age. But I think the facial hair and suit made Hans his most physically attractive role to date. Then Brandon, then Rasputin (even with the false facial hair and crazed wig).
I never saw Close My Eyes, that's one movie that is far too hard to find and from what I've heard, not too interesting. Besides, I like Clive Owen in Closer and Gosford Park and Greenfingers and he looks to be good in Children of Men. Age-wise, he's a little closer to my 18 years, as opposed to AR's 42-year difference. But I still love AR more of course. He's the perfect guy that you NEVER find. Which is probably why I'm a bit "grr" regarding his being taken but not, if you know what I mean.

*Bites tongue really hard and promises NOT to talk about politics in this thread*

Gruber was kinda' cute, but his face was all greasy in that movie...LOL...and I think AR looks better without facial hair, but that's just me. I still think Snape is the BEST followed by Mesmer (I have a thing for long hair, being a child of the sixties and all) and Brandon. I might have included RH PoT in this, but that wig was nasty! It looked like a teased up hairdo from some not so recent era of time. I didn't mind the facial hair in that one, tho.....accentuated those lips.
I never saw Close My Eyes, that's one movie that is far too hard to find and from what I've heard, not too interesting. I have never seen any of those movies CO was in, but you sure do get to see a "lot" of him in Close My Eyes, if you catch my drift!
Oooh! I think my tongue is bleeding....:D
mwbashful18 May 6th, 2006, 3:01 am I think Close My Eyes was a time for Clive Owen's career when he didn't have one . . . he was desperate. After all, Alan Rickman's speech I saw for when he accepted the Golden Globe had him saying Rasputin was a great role, which made him think they should make a category called Best Performance in a Crummy Role, lol. He probably thinks he belongs in that from time to time because the only work offered to him isn't necessarily mainstream. Clive Owen got lucky because he has that ability to catch American attention. Which I think is pretty pathetic -- you only get a career if you can impress Americans. Alan Rickman wouldn't have the fan base he has today without Harry. But hey, I think he loves playing "Severus" anyways so I don't think he really cares about the attention it has given him . . . unless those kidnappers make good on their promises, lol.
cazzaranda May 6th, 2006, 5:53 am I think Close My Eyes was a time for Clive Owen's career when he didn't have one .
Ummm...did he ever get one? I never heard of him til I got Close My Eyes, but then again, I don't follow Hollywood as closely as you do.
. unless those kidnappers make good on their promises, lol.
Trust me, we are woriking on it
Billywiggy May 6th, 2006, 8:39 am Well looky here . . . a new thread. What happened to the 'AR in other roles besides Snape' thread?
cazzaranda May 6th, 2006, 6:28 pm Well looky here . . . a new thread. What happened to the 'AR in other roles besides Snape' thread?
We got shut down unceremoniously for being "too chatty". Silly us!
Everyone needs to go to Mugglenet today for a big surprise!!!
mwbashful18 May 6th, 2006, 7:20 pm Why must we go to Mugglenet today? Oh, and check out HPANA, I helped them get a shout-out up for AR. They announced he was at the Tribeca Film Festival and they included my bit I sent about him scouting out a theatre to run his play. There are pics. And the comments page for the news briefing is nuts -- half the people have never seen him without the Snape costume and they couldn't believe "how much older he looks" compared to Snape. Please, the pics they put up, he's looking younger than he was two years back in PoA. So I posted a few movie pics and explained a bit for the ignorant ones, lol.
Clive Owen was in that King Arthur remake with Keira Knightley, in Gosford Park with Maggie Smith, in Greenfingers with Helen Mirren, in that Denzel Washington movie Inside Man, and in Closer with Natalie Portman, as well as that Jennifer Aniston flop Derailed. The only reason anyone went to see Derailed was for Clive Owen. He's very popular in the US because he's basically the new hot British guy to most Americans. Forget Hugh Grant, everyone wants Clive. That's basically the attitude these days. But I would choose an evening at the movies with Alan Rickman instead, any night of the week.
Oh wait, oopsy, I just checked Mugglenet. That info on Mugglenet regarding the play was all me telling HPANA. Everyone's big happy surprise is the obscenely large pictures they are offering everyone. I say "obscenely large" because I wasn't prepared to see his and Sigourney Weaver's pores.
And here's his first pics from Perfume: Story of a Murderer:

cazzaranda May 6th, 2006, 7:54 pm That is the WORST wig ever!!!
mwbashful18 May 6th, 2006, 9:31 pm The Perfume pictures you mean? I know, isn't the wig terrible?! It makes Snape's wig and Rasputin's so much nicer despite the greasiness of both.
Trust me, I'm only interested in Perfume because it sounds like a realy wacky film, and it has AR in it. So, just like that dreadful mustache, we shall have to work past the wig. lol
cazzaranda May 6th, 2006, 10:20 pm There ain't no getting past that hideous thing!
I actually prefer the rubber head from Galaxy Quest to that nasty thing!
Hey, speaking of Galaxy Quest, has anyone else seen that Mac commercial that has the guy who played "Brandon" in it? I didn't catch that it was him the first time I saw it, but I just saw it again and there is no mistaking his voice.
mwbashful18 May 7th, 2006, 12:57 am I just saw that commercial. He was in that small horror movie Jeepers Creepers. They play it on USA Network all the time. And he was in the Britney Spears movie Crossroads. I was just thinking of that the other day.
The wig is difficult. I saw a different pic once last summer. Ooh, I feel bad for him. It makes him look older, which we all don't like. And I kinda liked the Galaxy Quest fin thing. It was funny that he spent the whole movie with it, and even funnier when it started to come off. There's one scene where you can see him quickly tugging it onto his head with irritation. And his hair starts to come out at the end. It's funny. He and Tim Allen were the only two to be really beaten up badly.
Did anyone ever wonder why Sigourney Weaver's suit was open at the end of the film. I watched the deleted scenes and found out. It's cute that she and AR teamed again to do Snowcake.
true_heir_of_slyth May 7th, 2006, 1:11 pm Does anyone have a link to the Snowcake trailer that works? I followed the one on Mugglenet with much excitement but I can't get it to work, alas.
RE: Perfume - oh my goodness. That's some wig...
Slythy xx
bohemianBDC May 7th, 2006, 1:15 pm A bit random, but I'm new here and just wanted to say hi! I love Alan Rickman. And House M.D for the post above. Best. Show. Ever. So rad.
mwbashful18 May 7th, 2006, 5:57 pm For the Snowcake trailer go here:
http://fortissimofilms.com/catalogue/title.asp?filmID=264
Click on the high def if your computer is fast, low def if not.
Okay, I'm annoyed because I just found two reviews for Snowcake, one from Variety, which are saying the movie is a bit of a lame duck and that Sigourney Weaver isn't too believable. They claim that the film lacks credibility in its dramatic scenes and infuses comedy at the wrong time, such as the funeral, which reportedly comes off as cheesy. One says Alan Rickman is the only thing worth seeing because he is so good, the other says that Carrie-Anne Moss and Alan Rickman are the only things worth seeing because they are the only believable thing in the film. Both fear its distribution challenges as the movie doesn't have a studio backing it yet and may not get one without considerable happiness from the fans. The first review said the studios will have to see whether they are willing to put faith in the Alan Rickman fanbase, knowing it is large enough, but unaccountable.
The audience seems to enjoy this film, and while there are many more critics out there, the critics being miffed by the film isn't too good. We don't want this to be another straight to video thing because AR seems to be really really good. I think the audience's reaction will help it as everyone who doesn't write for a paper of magazine seems to enjoy it. We'll have to see.
Perhaps AR as a bi-sexual in The Villa Golitsyn will catch the Academy's eye if this one doesn't. lol.
candescence May 8th, 2006, 8:04 pm I know someone who saw it and said it was wonderful...so I am going to go on that presumption. Of course AR is great in it, he is great in anything and one of the most underrated actors in our time...
And I have to say I love that House pic...
But back to AR...I do hope Snow Cake gets a wide release, or at least to all the major cities. I know I will see it, and I was impressed with the trailer.
mwbashful18 May 8th, 2006, 8:31 pm Critics never know anything, and those are just two sources. I'm hoping the studios see how much we all want to see this. Over on HPANA all these comments were being posted by HP fans who barely even know what he looks like without the Snape costume, yet they all watched the trailer and all want to see it.
He does look really amazing in the trailer, and the film I Am Sam wasn't a big hit with critics but it did have amazing acting. And studios can do a lot worse with movie fluff like The Cave and Sleepover and Envy. I think if the film is released everyone will take notice of AR as, luckily, the film seems to be entirely about him. Which is the best thing in the world!!! He doesn't get many of those kinds of roles where it's "all for him."
Hermione75 May 8th, 2006, 11:12 pm I am going to have to disagree with you about him being in his best shape as Gruber. I'm thinking he looks pretty darn good as Snape...especially in that cut scene from GoF (and I know the arm movement he does is a bit bizarre, but just look at his physique while he's running toward the carriage...whoo hooo) and we are talking about a man who must have been 59 at the time.
Im thinkin he looks pretty darn good in those new pics....hello He must work out a bit,....to have such a nice bod. Not to say I see muscles, but I do have pics of him in a tight t-shirt, and boy, is he buff.
That is the WORST wig ever!!!
Come now Cazz,........You know you like it *smiles*
mwbashful18 May 8th, 2006, 11:33 pm Okay, gotta ask . . . we need to see these pictures of the buff AR in tight t-shirts. This is a need-to-see basis. Partly because I'm wondering how old these said pics are, and partly because if they're new I'm very excited. And I did read last summer that he'd made a comment about needing to visit the gym soon, lol.
Desraelda May 8th, 2006, 11:52 pm Okay, I'm annoyed because I just found two reviews for Snowcake, one from Variety, which are saying the movie is a bit of a lame duck and that Sigourney Weaver isn't too believable. Unfortunately, Variety carries a lot of weight. But if the movie does well enough in the film festivals, maybe a studio will pick it up for distribution. Probably Perfume and The Villa Golitsyn will do better because they are based on books.
mwbashful18 May 9th, 2006, 12:13 am Perfume has been set with Dreamworks since it began filming. It has been backing the film since before Tom Tykwer back when they thought a handful of other more known directors were interested. The Villa Golitsyn is only being made for 9 million (which makes me wonder exactly how much AR makes per film) so I can't imagine it will be a film that is lauded immediately. Unfortunately for us and AR's awards chances, he picks projects that interest him, not ones that will guarantee him lots of money and awards (gotta love him for the dignity there) so we can expect Golitsyn, however fun and wicked in an evil, I-want-to-see-him-play-a-scene-as-a-bisexual way, will be hard to get into mainstream. It will be an indie flick once again.
Someone suggested this long ago and it makes me chuckle: Alan Rickman nominated for Best Supporting Actor Oscar for Severus Snape in Harry Potter and the HBP, or for the final movie depending on how much lovely Snape screentime he has. If Jack Sparrow can get a nom, Severus can, because he plays him perfectly.
Hermione75 May 9th, 2006, 1:45 am Villa Golitsyn is only being made for 9 million (which makes me wonder exactly how much AR makes per film)
A movies Budget (alot of it) goes to pay the actors....so who knows?
We all know that he gets paid alot more for the Potter Flicks.
he picks projects that interest him, not ones that will guarantee him lots of money and awards (gotta love him for the dignity there) so we can expect Golitsyn, however fun and wicked in an evil, I-want-
Hey for all the Potter Flicks he has done, he is definatley not strapped for cash.
Becasue AR is exclusive to what parts he takes, it kinda would make him a high commodity in the business.
cazzaranda May 9th, 2006, 1:51 am Man, I don't understand this fascination with seeing AR in a bi-sexual role. If you wanna' see that just get Dark Harbor...that was more than enough for me.
And I will NEVER get over that wig! EVER!!!
As far as Snowcake and the critics, it makes me think of those scenes in AABA where Stella has to do the critic "favors" in order to get a good review.
Perhaps not enough palms were greased. Or maybe it really is just a lousy movie.
I only watched that trailer once and I thought Sigourney Weaver blew everyone else away....but what can you tell from a trailer?
Anyway, based on some of the garbage that the film industry puts out that gets rave reviews, who can really trust those people.
Desraelda May 9th, 2006, 8:06 pm (which makes me wonder exactly how much AR makes per film)
I read somewhere that he was complaining about how much actors are paid in Great Britain. Can't imagine he was complaining that they were overpaid.
mwbashful18 May 9th, 2006, 8:59 pm He had always stated that Brit actors aren't paid enough and therefore seek work in Hollywood and that is why the British cinema is lousy because there isn't any draw for its own people. I personally enjoy Brit films, Layer Cake was pretty good, as was 28 Days Later and Shaun of the Dead. These days he seems to shy away from outspokenness in that dept., but I doubt he's paid a whopping amount of money for Potter. Dan Radcliffe makes a lot, but you don't hear about the large sums of money Rupert Grint has taken in. Much less the supporting adult cast. Money isues was the problem with Gary Oldman and I will guess money as well as contract issues and screen time are effecting Robbie Coltrane and Maggie Smith. Alan Rickman loves the HP series, you can tell when he speaks about it. But I doubt he is paid rightfully for playing Snape. Certainly the new contract is up for him as the cast was contractually obligated to go up to GoF, so it is safe to say that everyone confirmed for OotP has had their conract tinkered with. I think it is safe to say that Alan Rickman is going to be sticking around for the finale. And perhaps he will be paid more for having a larger role!
IronLady May 9th, 2006, 10:48 pm Alan makes movies in America. In Holland we have this actor who has done a few villain and supporting roles in American movies, (he hasn't done half the blockbusters AR has starred in) he revealed he was paid from 150.000 upto 400.000 euro's a role. He played the villain in the Living Daylight, the Fugitive, Prince Of Tides, Immortal Beloved and Kafka, after that he's carreer stagnated. Now no one knows his name outside of Holland. And if you compare Alan's roles to his', (counting Alan's big ones; die hard, robin hood, sense & sensibility, galaxy quest, love actually etc). I reckon' he probably gets twice as much as this dutch actor did in those days. It all depends on the role and if the movie is commercial or not but I reckon' this is true (on the big ones). The smaller movies pay less. But it would take the movie box gross to figure it for those movies out. However since he's not (that we know of) earning from merchandising, (like Jack Nicholson did with Batman) the fee is the only thing he gets. This being said I don't really thing he has a personal hairdresser and 3 assistents to hold his hand when he's waiting for an award. It doesn't seem like he's an a big celebrity spender. Unless he's got some expensive hobby's we don't know of.......hugh-grant-like
mwbashful18 May 9th, 2006, 11:33 pm If we ever see AR out on the town, the only thing he seems to like to spend money on is shopping, lol. And if you saw those cast pics from Perfume, he has very awesome shoes. And I think he is a bit of a fan of goofy t-shirts with sayings or designs.
While I don't think he has ever made enough to buy a super big house in the expensive district of London, I think he has made enough to get an expensive flat/apartment. He strikes me as the type who is really humble and doesn't overspend like Jennifer Lopez, but he spends enough so that he eats out a lot and goes to every play on West End, and sees a lot of movies, and stocks up his library. Again, humble. If I had money, that is all I'd do too. That and travel.
cazzaranda May 10th, 2006, 3:30 am Holland, Holland....Holland.....I watched some foriegn films a bit ago and I seem to think at least one of them was from Holland. I'm not sure if it was "Kitchen Stories" that was the Dutch film, or "Elling"....either way, I liked them both and watched both of them a bunch of times. Now that I think of it "Kitchen Stories" might have been Swedish....because it had that Swedish horse in it.
Maybe Ironlady can give me a clue!
Anyway, I watched Michael Collins tonight....my my, that film goes on longer than married life! And who knew Professor Quirrell and Mad Eye Moody were in it! Could have lived without Julia Roberts, her accent was worse than Aiden Quinn's and AR's. LOL
The funniest bit was seeing AR in a woman's hat and fur coat....good grief! How could you watch that and not think of Neville's boggart?
Next time I have insomnia, maybe I'll drag that movie out again and watch it, but it's really not a feel good piece of entertainment.
Hermione75 May 10th, 2006, 4:19 am Anyway, I watched Michael Collins tonight....my my, that film goes on longer than married life! And who knew Professor Quirrell and Mad Eye Moody were in it! Could have lived without Julia Roberts, her accent was worse than Aiden Quinn's and AR's. LOL
Agreed. Julia Roberts was horrible in that Flick...I skip the scenes where she's concerned.
MC does go on and on....thought it would never end.
The funniest bit was seeing AR in a woman's hat and fur coat.
Ha! I never laughed so hard!.....well maybe
had always stated that Brit actors aren't paid enough and therefore seek work in Hollywood
He also said that he does not want to be one of those desperate actors in Hollywood with a sign around their neck saying "For Hire".
cazzaranda May 10th, 2006, 5:05 am Did anybody notice the comment that was made about AR's character in MC...about his nose being so big?
That was a hoot, too!
Must be why they hired him for the role. The hideous great hooter! Gotta' love it!
IronLady May 10th, 2006, 10:03 am Holland, Holland....Holland.....I watched some foriegn films a bit ago and I seem to think at least one of them was from Holland. It was a big surprise for me to see her in this movie....she didn't really fit in. Probably the accent.
The funniest bit was seeing AR in a woman's hat and fur coat....good grief! How could you watch that and not think of Neville's boggart?
Next time I have insomnia, maybe I'll drag that movie out again and watch it, but it's really not a feel good piece of entertainment.
LOL, Kitchen Stories and Elling don't ring a bell with me.......they are both Swedish indeed (imdb). I'm sure I knew about those movies if they were Dutch! The Dutch movies that were slightly succesful in the US were Soldier of orange and The 4th Man, (begin 80ies) This Dutch actor I mentioned before starred in both, and they were directed by (dutch) Paul Verhoeven.
Also there's this actor I forgot to mention. Rutger Hauer, he did Blade Runner, Batman Begins and Sin City, since he moved to the US he's kind of forgotten in Hollland.
Normally I like political movies like JFK or Vietnam pictures, but MC was not my cup of tea. Could be the fact that I know nothing about Irish history and the confilict with England. But still, it didn't nail the spot imho.
Hermione75 May 10th, 2006, 2:54 pm Did anybody notice the comment that was made about AR's character in MC...about his nose being so big?
No, Was it on the MC DVD? (on a extra features dvd?)
mwbashful18 May 10th, 2006, 5:01 pm it's in the movie, the nose comment; it was Liam Neeson talking about his jail break and how anyone will spot Eamon with his great big nose. it was funny, given AR has always treated his nose in a self-deprecating manner.
candescence May 10th, 2006, 8:06 pm I liked MC but it is not one of my fave AR movies...though I think he did the role great justice, as did Liam...Julia made me want to gag however.
Do you think his nose is too big? I don't, in fact I find myself staring at it and wondering if it is. LOL!!
mwbashful18 May 10th, 2006, 8:58 pm As Linda says in the Snowcake trailer, he has a long face, and if he had any smaller a nose it would look odd on him. I read once from someone's post that he had said something about "being born with this face" as though he were annoyed at it. I guess not having the internet has caused him to think he is unattractive. Perhaps Emma Thompson ought to lead him to a computer so he can see all of his fan pages. The man is loved, physically, for his acting, for The Voice, and for his sense of humor and intelligence, etc. He's perfect. I don't think he knows that. lol.
cazzaranda May 10th, 2006, 11:40 pm Also there's this actor I forgot to mention. Rutger Hauer,
Yeah, Rutger Hauer is HOT, too....well, at least he WAS back in the day....haven't seen him lately.
Do you think his nose is too big? I don't, in fact I find myself staring at it and wondering if it is. LOL!!
Nah....not too big....he has a most excellent nose! It is a great hooter tho!
Billywiggy May 11th, 2006, 1:51 am Alan makes movies in America. Are you talking about Jeroen Krabbé? He's a really good character actor!
If I don't get to see Snow Cake, I'm going to have one major hissy fit!
RELEASE SNOWCAKE NOW!
candescence May 11th, 2006, 2:21 am I know, I will be pretty po'd if I do not get to see Snow Cake! I want to see for myself, and I could not care less what a critic says!
And the fact that he does not realize how sensual, attractive, deveatating...he is...makes him all that much better!
cazzaranda May 11th, 2006, 3:01 am I once heard in a little snippet from an interview where he said that he can't help what kind of "fantasies" people (women) have about him, so I don't think he's oblivious to the fact that he has "rabid" fans.
candescence May 11th, 2006, 3:31 am LOL cazz...are we rabid?? I think we just might be!!!
cazzaranda May 11th, 2006, 3:38 am LOL cazz...are we rabid?? I think we just might be!!!
Ahhh, rabid is as rabid does.....LOL
btw, candescence, you like my new sig? guess who!
Also....somebody needs to go to the casting couch and post there.....I don't want to see Alan go to the second page!
IronLady May 11th, 2006, 6:01 pm As Linda says in the Snowcake trailer, he has a long face, and if he had any smaller a nose it would look odd on him. When he was doing Dangerous Liaisons he was shocked of the *pornographic* fanmail he got. Lindsey duncan (his co-star in Liaisons) mentioned that after seeing the play, 'most of the theatre-goers wanted to have sex, and most of them with Alan Rickman'. I'm sure he knows about his sexual charisma. After this play his fanbase got bigger because he moved to film. Attraction isn't a (only) a pretty face. You either have it or you don't...and he does, LOL...
candescence May 11th, 2006, 7:53 pm That is so true, either you have it or you dont. I once read an interview with Lindsey Duncan where she said she had never seen a room so transformed by a man, where all of the women became mere puddy at the sound of his voice.I mean he is not the most technically beautiful man ever, but he has it for sure. It is presence.
cazzaranda May 11th, 2006, 8:16 pm I just had my first listen through of Tubular Bells 2 on which AR is "Master of Ceremonies" (he didn't even get credit on the album liner notes...he is referred to as "A Strolling Player").
Maybe it's just me, but I don't think he had half the charisma as Viv Stanshall on the original Tubular Bells. He didn't seem to have his heart in it. I mean, when he says, "Tubular Bells" it should have some ooomph! to it. Then again, Viv was a hard act to follow.
Thanks to Hermione75 who found the article that gave the heads up that AR was on that record. I have never seen him have credit for that anywhere else.
IronLady May 11th, 2006, 8:39 pm Are you talking about Jeroen Krabbé? He's a really good character actor!

And Jeroen (61)

And NOW back to the main subject! AR.
Billywiggy May 11th, 2006, 9:19 pm I am honestly surprised you know these guys.
In Holland there's always been some rivalry between Rutger and Jeroen Krabbe and to the fans of each. I'm more of a Jeroen person myself but I let you guys decide which is the most attractive (I know it's beside the subject, but I don't often get the chance to promote Holland, it's not as we've got something to promote anyway, except for this maybe....) Well, they've both been in many hollywood movies. Rutger Hauer is perhaps more well known, as his movies were more successful, and his parts larger (most notably Blade Runner as mentioned, and also Ladyhawke). He's been recently doing lots of TV shows as well (Alias, Smallville). As for Jeroen Krabbe, I guess I've just seen a lot of his movies (Dangerous Beauty, Jumpin' Jack Flash, The Prince of Tides, etc., etc.). I'm pretty good at recognizing faces, even if I don't know who the actors are, really. :D
btw - I just saw on IMDb that Rutger was in a movie called 'Grijpstra and De Grier', based I'm assuming, on the book 'Outsider in Amsterdam'. Have you seen it? I used to love that mystery series!
Sorry - back to Alan!
Does anyone have any information about Nobel Son? I haven't heard too much about this movie, yet. I'm wondering if anyone's seen any pictures or read anything about it?
62442al_Man May 12th, 2006, 2:37 am ALan is an awesome actor, and has been for a long while. One of his first movie appearances was in none other than Romeo and Juliet. He plyed tybalt , the man who slays Mercutio then is killed by Romeo in return. Very dramatic, very well done. I would say I like him most for his role with Omar Epps. Fantastic Drama.

Um, Omar Epps? I think you mean Mos Def. Something the Lord Made? Vivien Thomas was played by Mos Def.
I was just thinking today how wonderful it would be to have Alan Rickman on Saturday Night Live. I think it would be a great show, regardless of the crappiness that the show is currently putting out. They haven't been doing quality writing for a while, though the Elijah Wood episode a few years back was great. I think with those three movies of AR's coming out this fall, we may get our wish. And he may make some TV appearances too like Leno and Letterman and a return to The View (lol, i enjoyed that first appearance on there).
Speaking of fan mail, has anyone on here ever sent him any? I have done a few drafts of a letter but cannot keep it down to less than two notebook sheets front and back. And also, does he actually read his? He seems the type who would. I have a really good line for a closing comment. I wonder if it is enough to get a response, lol. I hear JK Rowling writes back to fans who write to her saying they are in love with Draco. I wonder how annoyed he is to receive letters from girls under 18? I'm 18, but I started my fascination a year ago. And I was rather taken with Snape when I saw PS/SS when I was 13, lol.
Desraelda May 12th, 2006, 8:16 pm Um, Omar Epps? I think you mean Mos Def. Something the Lord Made? Vivien Thomas was played by Mos Def.
A lot of people seem to make that mistake. But the chemistry between the two was something special.

There was something on one of the fan sites awhile ago asking that we stop sending him fan mail (not that I ever have) because he couldn't keep up with it or something like that. But the notice was a few years old. Probably came out about the time he started playing Snape. :D Then another fan site had contact information, so presumably he is accepting fan mail again.

Well, I sent him a fan letter about....well 3 years ago now I think. I also enclosed with it two pics, one for me and one for my younger cousin (Snape's his fav character). Two months later we got them back signed and a nice response from Alan Rickman's agent in London telling us he really enjoyed our letter and was very grateful. I was 13 at the time and my cousin was 9 and I said in the letter how old we were.
It was like the best day of my life....hehe.....I nearly passed out right there in front of a large group of people (I had my friends over at the time). He wrote my name on the picture! (sorry had to squee right there). It also shocked everyone there because my friends had written to big stars, but none of them ever wrote back. No one believed Alan would respond at all, nor even care. But that showed them didn't it?

Yeah, thats what I meant. Sorry, I did a moview report the other day and was thinking of one of his movies
mwbashful18 May 12th, 2006, 10:04 pm Nobel Son is listed on the Toronto Film Festival's site as an uncomfirmed item for this fall's festival. Filming wrapped months back and the only real info on it is this one news article saying the director is hoping for a Toronto Film Festival debut.
I wonder about the type of movie it is because it sounds sort of cheesy in a Ruthless People or First Wives Club way. But then again it is being called a drama. At best it will be a dramedy. I guess some college guy who is having trouble with his masters degree thesis is kidnapped because his father, Alan Rickman, is a world-renouned scientist who just won the Nobel Prize, and his mother is a famous forensic expert. The son is played by Bryan Greenburg who played the 23-year old in the Meryl Streep and Uma Thurman movie, Prime. Mary Steenburgen is the mother and Bill Pullman and Danny DeVito (who both played in Ruthless People, hence the reference to it) are also a part of the cast, as is Ted Danson and Eliza Dushku. She will play City Hall (that is her name, thus my reference to whether or not this is a serious film or "a funny movie"), the son's girlfriend.
That is neat to hear about the fan mail stuff. So he didn't actually personally write back, but he read the letter and signed your names on the picture. Good enough for me. I thought it was neat that Rowling does write back, but only when girls are liking the wrong characters for the wrong reasons, lol. I wonder how many fan letters AR receives these days that simply ask for the truth about Snape? He'll like my letter because I just offer my theories about Snape and my good luck on roughing up Dan Radcliffe. I figure, if I am cute enough and funny enough in my writing, I'm certain his assistant will pass on the letter.
Also, how long did it take for a response and did they handle the postage? Like, you didn't include an SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope)? And does anyone think an autographed pic will be sent even if I don't send one?
silentkw May 13th, 2006, 12:50 am Also, how long did it take for a response and did they handle the postage? Like, you didn't include an SASE (self-addressed, stamped envelope)? And does anyone think an autographed pic will be sent even if I don't send one?
Well, I first sent it in July, but the postoffice returned it to me because I didn't have enough stamps on it. Then I resent it in August, then I received it in October. When I sent it, I included the letter, the two pics, an IRC (International Reply Coupon), and a self-addressed envelope. It cost me a good 15$ Canadian to send that letter. Anyways, in the letter, I just basically told him a little about myself and my cousin. Just you know, the first movie I saw him in, my favourite role of his. Also at the time he had never been to Canada so I told him what it's like here. I just tried being polite and respectable. It was cute how it turned out in the end. I sent him a pic of him as Mesmer and a pic of him of Snape. In the letter I wrote how much my cousin loves him as Snape, so he ended up signing the Snape pic for my cousin and the Mesmer one for me. When I gave the pic to my cuz he was jumping up and down yelling, "He actually read it!". It was cute, so we knew he actually read the letter and actually cared about what we were writing.
I'm not sure if they'll send a pic if you don't send one. I printed two pics off the internet and included them in the envelope. A friend of mine tried writing to some celebrity (can't remember who) and they requested an autograph, but they didn't send a picture. They received a pic back without a letter from anyone and just a signed picture. But the picutre just had the person's signature, no dedication, just the celebrity's name. It looked like it was printed, not written.

Ok so To be sure we get a response from Rickman, Cazz and I will write a letter posing as two young teens...or better yet, pre- teens.
I think he will be more likely to repond if he knows we are not "rabid" women with foam at the mouth  when we talk about him.....LOL
....Yes... portraying innocence it the way to go...
ps. someone has changed their signature..........again
lol
cazzaranda May 13th, 2006, 2:12 am What a brilliant stroke of genius, Hermione.
But I think we should pose as two little boys...that might give us even more hope. But it won't be too cool when we get our photos signed to our nicknames, Digger and Duder.
With all the projects that man is involved in, it's surprising he even has time to talk to his assistant, let alone read fan mail. Sweet that he signed those photos, tho!
Billywiggy May 13th, 2006, 2:15 am However nowadays there's a series about Grijpstra and The Gier but it doesn't include our Rutger Wow - I'm completely jealous now - I'd love to see that new series - especially if they updated it (out of the 70s at least! :D ) And I'll have to take a look at Turkish Delight. Just for Rutger's good performance, of course!
I wonder about the type of movie it is because it sounds sort of cheesy in a Ruthless People or First Wives Club way. Ugh - that does sound horrible. I was actually hopeful when you mentioned Danny DeVito and Bill Pullman - if figured the more big names attached, the likelier it will actually be released to the light of day. ;)
But if the movie is like you describe it - I'm not so sure I want to see it anyway.
Ok so To be sure we get a response from Rickman, Cazz and I will write a letter posing as two young teens...or better yet, pre- teens. For shame, omg!

Im all over it
cazzaranda May 13th, 2006, 2:34 am For shame, omg!
Hey, you do what you have to do!!!
mwbashful18 May 13th, 2006, 4:58 am Well, who knows how Nobel Son turns out. I never make decisions on a movie until I've seen the trailer, so that will give us all we need. I think that by July there will be more info on it, possibly a trailer. But there are some known people in there. Honestly, people who haven't done any work of late save for AR and the guy who plays his son. But still, known people. It may be a good movie as it was reported by the director or someone that Nobel Son was "a good movie for AR."
There is an interview with AR from the Tribeca Film Festival on Leaky Lounge and CBS News has reviewed Snowcake (the interview is about that movie) and has given it a very good review (YEY!). But the interview is entertaining as his hair is outrageous. It looks like they just woke him up to do the interview. lol
IronLady May 13th, 2006, 12:33 pm Just seen it. He has that intentially scruffled up mod-look in that clip. Ruffled up, but intentially I think. That's entertainment.
mwbashful18 May 13th, 2006, 5:20 pm For a split second he reminded me of Simon Cowell. I do not know why. His voice probably, because the way he was speaking his words it just sounded more Simon Cowell. AR is always so measured and quiet and I think I was surprised to hear him speaking quickly and with a "this is how it is" leader-ish kind of way. Just me, I don't know.
Also, has anyone who went to purchase Rasputin on DVD from ebay received their copy yet? They have an "all-region" DVD available and I am wondering if that is the seller everyone got theirs from. I wanted to know how it plays first and what the box looks like that the disc came in. I bought my mother a DVD/VCR combo specifically so I can order Rasputin on VHS and rent a couple movies from a local video store that I can't find on DVD anywhere. lol.

Got mine yesterday. It has an official looking cover, but no title on the DVD itself. When I try to play it, I get CHECK DISK. It's supposed to be all-region, but I think the seller lied. I'm going to contact him to find out why I'm getting that message. I'll let you know.
mwbashful18 May 13th, 2006, 11:09 pm Thanks Desraelda -- I think I'll go with the VHS. I'm trying to outbid someone but stay in a decent price range. And I'm trying to find out from the person about the box/clamshell thing it comes in. One offer has the original box, another has is "a clamshell with artwork."
cazzaranda May 14th, 2006, 1:29 am Oooh! I was just checking out my new cable package, and I came across "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern"....I didn't have a visual for Tim Roth before, and now that I have seen him, I have to say that I am SOOOOOO glad AR got the part for Snape instead! I would never have become a Harry Potter fan if Roth had gotten the role!
And Gary Oldman...whoo hoo! He was pretty hot especially without the fake rotten teeth!
Anyway, that's my two cents!
candescence May 14th, 2006, 4:26 am I know this is the AR thread but I do have to give props to the fab Gary Oldman...*drools while thinking about him in Dracula and the Scarlet Letter*
Back to AR!!!
Des, that stinks that you got a DVD that does not work. I hope the seller can rectify, and if not well then of course ebay should be contacted...
Hey, Judas Kiss was on yesterday and I caught ten minutes of it, anyone know if it is good? The part I saw was ok...and do he and Emma Thompson have it in their contracts that they have to work together?? They are cute!
cazzaranda May 14th, 2006, 4:36 am Eh!...I happened to catch about half of "The Winter Guest" on tv today....what a stinker! It was about as interesting as "Michael Collins" but at least that was a true-ish story.
It did have that young actor who plays Oliver Wood in the HP films in it, tho....he was just a kid! I stopped in the middle and I don't even know if I want to go back and watch the rest of it.
Oooh, and Emma Thompson's hairy armpits.....oy!!! That's a bit "european" for me!
(oh, no offense to europeans, it's just that we shave our armpits here)
Hermione75 May 14th, 2006, 6:29 am I agree. AR is a waaaay better Severus than Roth....Ugh just think if Roth HAD gotten that part. Well, lets just say AR is Snape
Eh!...I happened to catch about half of "The Winter Guest" on tv today....what a stinker! It was about as interesting as "Michael Collins" but at least that was a true-ish story.
I am so Glad someone else has seen that movie ( at least an attempt to watch it) I watched about 10 minutes have that movie....I can honestly say that movie went no place fast....
MHPFAN May 14th, 2006, 6:53 am Well, since there seems to be such a love of this man on CoS Forums, I think we should glorify him even more with a thread dedicated to anything and everything about him.
I can officially say that I now have a friend who understands the liking, and another who's fancying of his hands has increased to total liking of him. lol.
  I absolutely LOVED him in Sense and Sensibility!!! Hubba, hubba!
Desraelda May 14th, 2006, 12:46 pm Des, that stinks that you got a DVD that does not work. I hope the seller can rectify, and if not well then of course ebay should be contacted...
Yeah, I was so excited to get Rasputin on DVD. And it turns out to be a lemon. I sent an e-mail to the guy and told him about it. I also asked him if it was a copy. If it is ... and from what everybody says it has to be ... he's got pretty good cover art on the front. Not much on the back, though. And he advertises the DVD as new and working in the USA. If I don't hear back from him by Monday night, I will definitely contact e-bay and HBO.

 I was thinking this exact same thing a couple weeks ago when I was watching SNL! Right after I watched Goblet of Fire with my mom. I started thinking about a skit they had done once making fun of the Harry Potter movies/actors. I thought it would be hilarious if they could get Rickman to do the show, and specifically, a skit making fun of Harry Potter. For some reason, I don't think that he would do SNL though. Maybe if we all start bombarding SNL producers, and Rickman with letters . . .
mwbashful18 May 14th, 2006, 5:19 pm I think it would be funny if he did a skit on an episode as Snape. He might find that compelling enough, lol.
Tim Roth did have the part of Snape for a while and they were set to start filming when he was offered the role of the general in Planet of the Apes by Tim Burton. He thought that was a better lead role than Snape's background role. Little did he know about Snape's fate, eh? Evidentally he backed out, Alan Rickman began "campaigning" for the role, as it's been said, and Rowling at first was put off by his age. Then some day she supposedly thought of him in the role of Snape during PoA and immediately went, wait a second, he's perfect! Ruddy glad that occurred to her! lol. After that she wanted AR and only AR for the part. The rest is history. Though I dare say he is a closet Harry Potter fan, you know, the type who switches book jackets so as to appear that he's reading something "worthy" in public, rather than a HP book. lol. I don't know if he does that but he seems the type. And I think Snape is the character in all of his filmography that he relishes playing the most because of how much he flaunts the role. We do so love AR as Snape, don't we!?
Desraelda May 14th, 2006, 6:08 pm For some reason, I don't think that he would do SNL though. Maybe if we all start bombarding SNL producers, and Rickman with letters . . .
I think he might. I have a TV show he did, forget the name, that I got from AR Download Haven. It's a satire of an 18th Century costume drama. He plays an absolute coughcough of an army officer. It's really funny and just the sort of skit they'd do on SNL.

I saw that one too. It was pretty stinkin' funny. I forgot about it though. SNL is a little rougher around the edges than that parody, but, it gives me reason for hope .
mwbashful18 May 15th, 2006, 5:11 pm Anybody see the headline that Alan Rickman has his signed Love Actually hat and a signed photo (which is GORGEOUS!) which belongs in a frame in a shrine on Ebay now? He's doing that charity and his hat finally was posted to the charity auction. Emma Thompson has one too and a few others. I think Emma Thompson's may be the hat she wore in Wit. Not sure though. Anyhoo, his hat is red and says Love Actually and the photo is really nice. Point is, the bid right now is at 600 British Pounds. That is amazing. He brings in that kind of draw a lot. There was another charity auction with Ebay he did where all he did was draw on an Easter egg coloring page, and you weren't even sure what he drew, and then it was signed. That fetched something like 505 BP, which is a fwe dollars shy of $1000. He has a major draw for his real items. I think there are a few fraud things on there. Even Ringo Starr has a hat up for auction and that is only at 100 pounds. And right now, I'm in a bidding war with someone over a copy of Rasputin. I think the war is more for the fact that it is the VHS in the original box. lol

That's so cool. That's exactely what makes Alan different from the other ones in the bizz. If I was a millionnaire I would bid the price up as much as I could.
mwbashful18 May 15th, 2006, 11:11 pm I'm hoping to send my fan letter this week. It would be neat to get an autograph. Too bad it's not that pic on ebay for the Mad Hatters charity, it is a very lovely picture. I wonder if he just has those lying around, lol.
I saw part of An Age of Innocence today and I have to say, I'm a Daniel Day-Lewis fan now. I've proceeded to download three pics to my screensaver of him. But there are still more AR pics than anybody else.
Okay, I won the bid for the Rasputin VHS on Ebay! Should be in my mailbox in less than two weeks! Goody-goody gumdrop! Can't wait. And I found Closet Land at a local Hollywood Video! Gonna rent that. And I think they have Bob Roberts, might nab that. And Truly, madly, Deeply I am renting possibly tomorrow night! Yey!

I think my VHS from e-bay is a copy, too. The quality is not great, but okay, and the case is plain brown.
And I found Closet Land at a local Hollywood Video! Gonna rent that.
Let us know what you think of Closet Land.
And I think they have Bob Roberts, might nab that.
Bob Roberts was truly strange, but I loved the music. Alan was hardly in it at all.
And Truly, madly, Deeply I am renting possibly tomorrow night! Yey!
Did you run out of Kleenex? For me the big sob scene was when Jamie came back.
Billywiggy May 19th, 2006, 11:13 pm I saw part of An Age of Innocence today and I have to say, I'm a Daniel Day-Lewis fan now.Oh, it's an even better book, if you haven't read it yet! And, I think Daniel Day-Lewis' most eye-candy worthy role to date is Last of the Mohicans. He stars along with Madeleine Stowe, Alan's co-star in Closet Land (and a wonderful actress).
And I found Closet Land at a local Hollywood Video! Gonna rent that. :wow: That's amazing - rent it right away! And definitely let us know how it is.

I read Age of Innocence back in October. Movie was pretty darn boring actually compared to the book. Winona Ryder was a bit of a joke, then again, it was funny she was in The Crucible with him. I don't dig the long hair though on DD-L in Last of the Mohicans though, but I do like how he looked in The Boxer. Really short hair (but not bald like it has been) is nice.
Truly Madly Deeply was sad for me during Nina's breakdown with her therapist and also when he returned. It was not so much a sob-fest as Brandon's carrying Marianne back to the Palmer's home in S&S was. That was like Niagra Falls with crying for some reason, but I only had a few streams of tears for TMD. Wonderfully charming movie, but I don't know how much replay value it has. AR's not in it as much as I would like, though he has the best lines in the film. I luv that bit where he holds her back from him with his foot, then he breathes onto his hand and touches his lips to warm them (so adorable). Also the insane sneaking on her. That is so me! I do that to people. And I like the water pouring to wake Nina up. Oh, and my favorite bit is the Adjective Game. I have a love/hate relationship with that scene because I use to play that with someone I liked, but they're not really in my life anymore so it kinda sucks. But it was so cute in the movie. I like his "juicily" bit. LOL.
Oy, Perfume: Story of a Murderer's trailer is available online now. It is an international one which had a few flashes of nudity and is audio-dubbed in German. The movie is being released in September there so the trailer was in front of MI:3. It won't be released in the states until Dec. 8. The trailer briefly shows AR in the horrendous wig, but other than that it looks like a very beautifully-filmed movie. Everyone and everything looks very rustic and "of the period." I heard they change up the ending a bit with how Laure is killed by Grenouille. And best yet, AR is give the second credit in the cast. It goes Ben Whishaw, Alan Rickman, Rachel Hurd-Wood, and Dustin Hoffman. I think Hoffman's role will be only within the first hour or so, then he dies. Then the rest of the film will be AR's stuff with his daughter (JOY!). I envy the girl if they included the scene from the book where Laure's father (AR) kisses her on the lips while she is sleeping. Hmmm. . . .
Oy, something else too. I was over on the HPANA forums and I asked in the Alan Rickman Appreciation Thread (Join Us or Die!) if anyone has ever written a fan letter to him. One girl said she's written twice, the first time being her first fan letter ever. She received a letter from his assistant because saying he was away filming a movie at the time and unable to read the letter immediately. She had asked if she could get an autograph and she received a photo back (it is the one that is available with the Mad Hatter's Charity on Ebay right now! sheesh I luv that picture) that was signed and the letter also said that he would get the letter as soon as he returned. And the best part is she didn't know what to do so she didn't include any return envelope or international postage or anything. It's only 84 cents anyways here for airmail. So, yesterday, I sealed my fan letter and sent it off to England. I figure it will arrive in a week or so and with any luck, he will get it before going to France since he's in England filming HP. I sent a personal drawing of Snape (the chapter picture from Snape's Grudge in PoA) as well as an advertisement cut-out thingy I saw in a magazine for Cedar Point, "the roller coaster capital of the world." I'm hoping to get bonus points for being extremely cutely, charming. I think I'm just hoping he'll do a JK Rowling and send a personal response. If I were to get one, I'd faint! But alas, I think I'll be hearing from Melanie Parker, the assistant. But at least he gets his stuff and reads it. So no losses suffered.

Very clever. That should grab AR's attention.
mwbashful18 May 20th, 2006, 8:34 pm Very clever. That should grab AR's attention.
Yes, I'm all about subliminal messages. :p
A few random things I'd said include: "I wouldn't be a true Alan Rickman fan if I don't say this -- If the Voice of God does indeed sound like you, then I shall definitely be in Heaven." Ouch, zinger! It is my "PS" at the end of the letter. I also said towards the end that he should "beware any shady characters -- ever since it has been said that you know Snape's fate, there have been those out there trying to make good on their kidnapping promises." I also gave my quick assessment of what I think will happen to Snape and I also asked for him to do his worst to Dan Radcliffe when he pulls him from the Pensieve, "the throttling, shoving, and cockroach-jar throwing included." Oy, another good zinger I said was about Colonel Brandon: "Colonel Brandon, I think, is a model of a man to which all males should aspire to. Though, many of your fans, and I, would agree that you are an even better model of such a 'Perfect Man.'" :D
I also included smily faces after certain tactical comments to show I was joking about something. Last thing one wants is to be incredibly funny but be interpreted as rude.
I'm hoping I have an alarming charm factor. I reckon if I impress him enough, ha ha, maybe I'll hit the jackpot and get a response. I'd frame any letter/photo/drawing/ect. that I were to receive.

Crossing my fingers for you. You certainly worked hard enough at it.
I'm rereading one of my favorite series (The Starbridge Series by Susan Howatch) and she made reference in the last two books to Barchester Towers and in the last book specifically Mr. Slope. I immediately thought (both times) of Mr. Obadiah Slope and as soon as I finish the last book in the series (I'm about halfway through), I'll be watching The Barchester Chronicles. It's been months since I watched it and I'm looking forward to AR's outstanding smarminess.
mwbashful18 May 22nd, 2006, 4:20 am I even mentioned that the bi-sexual antics at dinner during The Villa Golitsyn should be interesting, if they are included in the film. That will be a good role for him I think because it has the crudeness of Rasputin with the playfulness of Jamie with the loveliness of Col. Brandon. Should be good.

Oh, my ... a triple threat. I'm looking forward to that movie more than Perfume. That and Snow Cake.
mwbashful18 May 22nd, 2006, 4:06 pm Did anyone see the trailer for Perfume yet? I think I posted the link above. I like how it looks very "of the period" it takes place in. Everyone looks dirty like they don't bathe regularly save for the rich folks, and all the costumes look worn and natural, except the rich people. And the towns look very real. Just like Gangs of New York was very accurate, I thought. I'm glad to hear AR got second billing in the cast for Perfume. And first billing for Snowcake! Joy. Jubilation. Merriment. Extacy. Phenomenally happy. Etc.
Muahahaha May 22nd, 2006, 5:28 pm Ok I have to say other than Hp my favourite Alan Rickman role is in Dogma. He's so funny in that. I also loved him in Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy.
bex93 May 22nd, 2006, 6:57 pm Yey!Alan Rickman!I sent a letter to him last month but unfortunately at the time he was attending the Tribecca film festival so I didn't get his autograph like I asked but Melaine Parker sent me a nice letter back apologising.Anyways I have seen 13 movies with him in and it's hard to find his older stuff in the shop so I'll have another search as soon as possible.I want to see Mesmer and Judas Kiss cos they look the most interesting especially Mesmer. But there hard to find so I'll have a hard look and probablly find one of them anyway.:DOh and Im looking forward the film Snow Cake and I was proper excited when he said 'Mrs Freeman' cos thats my name.Well, not Mrs,but Miss.
Muahahaha May 22nd, 2006, 7:17 pm I do think Snow Cake will be great. I think it's great that he's still playing a love interest in movies. He may be an old dude, but the man still has it.
mwbashful18 May 22nd, 2006, 7:39 pm Careful what you say about him, there are some on here that still have pics of him posted to their computers and watch his movies all the time so they can swoon. We think he is still attractive, albeit it may depend upon lighting and whether or not he's sporting that wig from Perfume or the mustache from TMD. lol
Oy, weird news, especially since I sent that fan letter with a mention of this, but a fansite is saying something about AR having never heard of Villa Golitsyn and that he's never signed up for anything of the sort. I dunno if this was a joke or silly comment about something else, but it would suck if he's not in that film -- he's perfect for it!
Muahahaha May 22nd, 2006, 7:54 pm Personally I spend my time swooning over John Krasinski. I do love a good Alan movie to swoon over too though...
IronLady May 22nd, 2006, 7:56 pm He's just joking trust me. He signed the papers.
IrishEmerald7 May 23rd, 2006, 3:27 am I want to see Mesmer and Judas Kiss cos they look the most interesting especially Mesmer. But there hard to find so I'll have a hard look and probablly find one of them anyway
You are going to love Mesmer! I was fortunate enough to find it in my travels in a used video store for $2.00!! I also was able to purchase Dark Harbor as well, though I have yet to sit down and watch it.
mwbashful18 May 23rd, 2006, 3:53 am Shall we get to talking about Dark Harbor again? The K-ing scene at the end?
So everyone is sure he is actually joking about Villa Golitsyn? I mean, where are these reports coming from if he isn't in it? Besides, I don't wanna seem silly if he isn't in it and then reads my fan letter that talks about him playing a bi-sexual in it!!!
Desraelda May 23rd, 2006, 4:04 am You are going to love Mesmer! I was fortunate enough to find it in my travels in a used video store for $2.00!! I also was able to purchase Dark Harbor as well, though I have yet to sit down and watch it.
I ordered Mesmer from Amazon on April 8 and they said 4-6 weeks to ship. It hasn't shipped as of yesterday. Getting very antsy.
mwbashful18 May 23rd, 2006, 4:17 pm I sent my payment for Rasputin and Back to the Future VHS tapes (I bought my mother a VCR/DVD player for Mother's Day) on Thursday, May 18 to the two people I bought a video from, and I haven't heard from them at all since. I wouldn't think it takes more than three days to ship a letter from MI to PA or MA. I'm really hoping the Rasputin VHS works well. We have a really old TV and soemtimes VHS tapes will not work in any VCR because the TV just doesn't support it. I had to drag my TV out and hook it all up just to watch Part Two of The English Patient and Truly, Madly, Deeply. It was an Anthony Minghella weekend. I prefer T,M,D to Cold Mountain and English Patient.
bex93 May 23rd, 2006, 4:21 pm I'll have another look for Mesmer as soon as possible.I've read a summary for that Villa thingy and it's says that he plays a drunk or someat whom is a bit like Snape so that will be cool to watch.I don't want to see Dark Harbor. If I did then every other movie I saw with Alan Rickman in it wouldn't be very good cos when I have something like that in my mind it won't go away.I'll miss that one out till Im older.:D
IronLady May 23rd, 2006, 10:40 pm It has a pretty 'disturbing' ending, depends on what you find disturbing actually but some would qualify it like that. But I loved it :-))))))
mwbashful18 May 23rd, 2006, 10:47 pm Okay, I'm getting annoyed because my EBAY guy just said he hasn't received my money order yet, even though I posted it last Thursday in a mailbox. It was from Michigan to Pennsylvania and I put it into the mailbox round noon when the box isn't checked again until 5 pm. I can give it to them that the letter wouldn't be sent out until the next day, but I would think he'd have gotten it now. Unless he hasn't check his mail yet. I don't know because I'm getting paranoid. This is the guy who's got my RASPUTIN tape! I AM CRAVING THAT MOVIE! lol. I'm hoping he gets his mail in the next hour or something and ships the bloody tape out tomorrow!!!!! And the same goes for the dude in Massachusetts who has Back to the Future for me. I got that for 50 cents, plus ship/hand. Brand-new, never-opened 1995 VHS. Hope it works. Otherwise I'm going to buy myself a cheap VCR.
I saw these scans on Rickmanalysis.com or whatever. They were of the 1992 GQ magazine main cover article on AR. Very interesting to read. He does seem intimidating. But that was back in 1992 and he himself has said that he is much more tame these days. But yeah, it had this bit about how he refused to shoot a scene in Die Hard and it stopped production for the day because they went round and round. And not because his hair wasn't perfect or some such "superstar" problem, it was because he refused to throw Bonnie Bedelia to the ground roughly. He said all the shot was supposed to do was show that Hans was the big dumb villain and Bonnie Bedelia was the damsel-in-distress female and they just wanted her shirt to fly open. He says it did open a little but he didn't have to throttle her because Hans is relatively civilized in a way, so it wouldn't make sense.

Where are all these great articles?? I have searched the internet and can never find them! Any one website that they are all on?
IronLady May 25th, 2006, 2:31 pm Damn this is beside the topic but I can't resist sharing because in some far way it's Alan/Snape related: it's confirmed that Helena Bonham Carter is in for the role of Bellatrix Lestrange! The original signed one is pregnant and is out. Way TO GO Helena! I always wanted her or Liz Hurley for that part. She will be magnificantely evil!

alan-rickman.com. The site hasn't been updated in a while, but there are some good interviews. I think the articles might have been edited, but they're still pretty good.
MoonysAngel May 26th, 2006, 4:11 am I have a question, y'all. Alan does some (uncredited?) voiceover work on Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells cd. Is it the Tubular Bells 2003 cd that is listed as having the John Cleese voiceover?
I can get it for $3.79...is it worth that price?
cazzaranda May 26th, 2006, 3:38 pm It's Tubular Bells 2...and hardly worth the money, in my opinion. He didn't seem to have put his heart into it, not even at the climax where he says, " And...Tubular Bells"!

Which is why Pay Pal exsists. I did the snail mail route for one or two purchases. If they don't except Pay Pal, I just move on along ..(Takes too long in my opinion to for turn around time.)

I agree with Cazz, Money that could have gone to better things...Like snausages for Duder and Digger or Christmas presents for the nice man next door.......ROTFL

I don't even remember how much I paid for TB2 ( but it was probably enough to keep Duder in treats for a couple of weeks, and he leaves his own version of christmas presents for the nice man nextdoor), but I have just given it another listen and even tho AR doesn't have the "presence" that Viv Stanshall did in the original, he does have a very sexy way of saying "glockenspiel".
It's almost like listening to Severus Snape do the delivery, which I guess isn't too bad, but really, unless you are a HARDCORE AR collector, there is no reason to own this cd. I would recommend the original Tubular Bells to anyone tho.....it's a classic even if it has nothing to do with AR.
OK, I just listened to the original TB again....and Viv does a great job on "mandolin" and "spanish guitar and introducing ....acoustic guitar!"....and of course, "Tubular Bells"
But on my third listening to AR doing it, it seems to get better hearing him! I think I am biased because I LOVE the musical thread in the original TB and I don't have the same feeling for the music in TB2.....LOL...AR just said "the Venetian effect".....what the heck is that?
I still think he should have given a little bit MORE to "and Tubular Bells" which is the vocal climax of the piece....but anyway, that's my take on it.
I think Mike Oldfield has made over nine versions of Tubular Bells, which means he hasn't had a fresh idea in thirty years....LOL...but god bless him, it's fun to put on and blast real loud while you are doing brain dead stuff like housecleaning! I would be interested to hear the John Cleese version and I wonder who the other folks he had doing "master of ceremonies" all these years....
And for those of you who are wondering and didn't read the earlier pages of this thread, AR is given credit on TB2 as "A strolling player".

Isn't that the site you said hasn't been updated? Cuz I could sure...ahem.....make an MP3 for anyone who would care to hear it. Just a thought!
Ooh (singing along to Tubular Bells)...isn't that why they made the owlery.....LOL...the words so fit to the music.
It just occured to me that some of the readers of this thread would not be familiar with Mike Oldfield and/or Tubular Bells so therefore, I will elaborate on the little bit that I know.
Mike Oldfield had this idea back in the seventies to make an album of music in which he played all or almost all of the instruments himself. If anyone has ever seen the movie, "The Exorcist", it was his theme from Tubular Bells they used to make you totally creep out!
Anyway, at a certain point in the album, he does this sort of Ravel's Bolero sort of thing, where the melody stays the same but builds with different instruments added in as the piece goes on. In the original he used the late lamented Vivian Stanshall as his "master of ceremonies" who introduced each new instrument as it came into play.
On Tubular Bells Two he does a variation of the same theme, only this time it's Alan Rickman as master of ceremonies....the instruments he introduces are thus:
Grand Piano
Reed and Pipe Organ
Glockenspiel
Bass Guitar
Vocal Chords
Two slightly sampled electric guitars
The venetian effect
Digital Sound Processor
And.....Tubular Bells!
So that' what you get to hear Alan say if you decide to invest in TB2 ...or owl me! LOL
Desraelda May 27th, 2006, 12:42 pm Isn't that the site you said hasn't been updated? Cuz I could sure...ahem.....make an MP3 for anyone who would care to hear it. Just a thought!
The site that hasn't been updated is alan-rickman.com. Britbitsandclips.com gets updated and I've even found some new clips there.
IrishEmerald7 May 27th, 2006, 6:58 pm I like Britbitsandclips.com. Its a cool site! I have my mp3 player and i put bits of alan in between the songs, lol.
mwbashful18 May 28th, 2006, 12:11 am Okay, it's been confirmed, the money order was received and my Rasputin will be on its way soon. I hope the delivery is a lot faster though. Can't wait!!!!
I like reading interview bits of AR because he seems so genuine in life and he has really comedic comments. He comes across as someone who can just lash out at you with fervor, but also win a staring contest or "no talking" contest. Quiet and guarded but very spontaneous. Apparently he is loud enough to call Margaret Thatcher the b-word, but also quaint enough to refuse throwing Bonnie Bedelia to the floor during filming of Die Hard because it upset his morals.
Gosh there should be more men like him the world. My part of the world, most men I come across, boys, guys, and men, they are all obnoxious, vulgar, rude, disgusting, pig-headed, lame, dull, unintelligent or at best unsophisticated, and do not have that same charm/charisma/respectfulness which AR has in multitudes.
I'm rambling.
Try Googling "catsplay Rickman" and see if you can find her site at livejournal because she has many goodies of pics and little bits, including the GQ scans and the RUMOR that HE DOESN'T KNOW he is set to play in The Villa Golitsyn in a few weeks. And big pics from Fallen Angels: Murder, Obliquely.
Desraelda May 28th, 2006, 1:24 am Okay, it's been confirmed, the money order was received and my Rasputin will be on its way soon. I hope the delivery is a lot faster though. Can't wait!!!!
It's definitely worth the wait. I've been waiting since April 8 for Mesmer and they finally shipped today. I should have it by the beginning of next week. [/QUOTE]
mwbashful18 May 28th, 2006, 5:58 am On a sort of AR-related note, I saw MI:3 tonight and I found Jonathan Rhys-Myers in it as one of Tom Cruise's team members. Myers was the one from Michael Collins who seemingly incriminated Eamon de Valera by taking it upon himself to lure MC into a false meeting with AR's character, even though in real history Dev knew nothing of the young boy's intent to kill MC. He was in Match Point and Bend It Like Beckham too. And won the Golden Globe for playing Elvis on American TV. He's pretty, lol.
snapes_witch May 28th, 2006, 7:26 am :clap:Oh goody! Another AR thread!
It's Tubular Bells 2...and hardly worth the money, in my opinion. He didn't seem to have put his heart into it, not even at the climax where he says, " And...Tubular Bells"!
I was going to buy it . . . eventually, but instead I checked it out from the Library and uploaded the relevant track. Much cheaper that way!!
Regarding fan mail: I wrote him two letters when he was in NYC appearing in Private Lives. One telling him I was sorry he'd not received the Tony and how much I'd enjoyed his appearance on Charlie Rose's show. The other one I sent him my Mesmer VHS cover for him to autograph, which he did with my name and everything. I thought I'd written pretty 'grown-up' letters, but I get embarrassed reading them now! I used to send him birthday cards but of course I don't know if he ever saw them. He probably gets cards by the postal bagful.
I hope I haven't jinxed this thread; the other Alan Rickman thread made the third one that I was posting on that got closed.

If AR personally signed your Mesmer cover, I'm sure he saw your cards. He probably takes the time to read the nice things people send him.
mwbashful18 May 28th, 2006, 3:55 pm That's amazing that he would sign your VHS cover! Forget about ego thinking you're trying to get an autograph that could be sold. Very nice guy! I think he might enjoy my letter then.

Well your "looking for love in all the wrong places" cause their out there so don't loose faith....than again, I married a Brit.

mwbashful18 May 30th, 2006, 12:30 am I'm sorry, he's hot or he's a hoot, because either way is accurate. lol.
I think the Brits mature better than Americans. I like the way Emma Thompson stated it on The View episode about American men being too confident and British men being very shy and nervous. I like that and so does she. But I don't like guys who are so shy that you wonder if they ever talk at all. I suppose respectful is a better term. Or charmingly timid. Something like that.
Welcome to the wonderful world of Alan Rickman. This is the place where we talk about him every day.

I forgot to mention that I told him in myletter if the cover ever turned up on eBay he'd know it would be over my dead body! Gawd, I was sooo silly!
Oh another thing . . . y'know how shiny those covers are? Before I took it to the framers I wiped it clean only realizing later that I'D WIPED OFF ALAN RICKMAN'S FINGERPRINTS!

Conan was interviewing Alan and asked about the difference between LA and London. He said as he gets off the plane in London, he always finds himself slumping and saying "sorry" to everyone in sight. Sounds like he likes his LA persona better. But from what I hear (or read) he does love London.
mwbashful18 May 31st, 2006, 4:08 pm I saw that interview too. I think that's a good way of putting the difference between America and Britain, what he said. I think in Britain he feels like he has to be pleasant and nice, no matter what. At least in America it's okay to show displeasure or annoyance or speak about an opinion. It seems over there he feels smaller. But America is deceiving: too many people who are nutter, crazy looney-toons. I think.
But again, still, it's the respect thing he has. Especially how he feels towards women. You just don't find men who actually understand women and can honor them properly.
IronLady May 31st, 2006, 6:09 pm British men are indeed more gentlemen like. It impresses me. They just respect traditions and women more I feel. Might be a smart disguise to get **** though.
Freaky May 31st, 2006, 7:29 pm I must say I haven't seen him in much but he does play the baddie so well. I loved him in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves (Kevin Costener) and then most recently I've seen him in Love Actually which I thought was good because he was so very different from Snape.
I just think baddies are the roles he should play most.
cazzaranda June 1st, 2006, 3:49 am I saw that interview too. I think that's a good way of putting the difference between America and Britain, what he said. Frankly, I am a getting a little sick of all this stereotyping of people from whatever country they come from.(I could really insult IronLady by saying, for instance, that Amsterdam is just another name for junkies....I wouldn't say that, of course, but others might) There are "nutters and looney-types" in every place you go, America is NO exception. Before I actually visited England, the only "Brits" I met here (in America) were the most self loving, full of themselves, arrogant people I had ever encountered.
I was pretty sure they were all like that until I actually went there. Once I had set foot on British soil, I was surprised, much to my delight, to find the exact opposite...the folks there were the most incredibly polite and decent people! Over three weeks I never had a bad experience. So you can never judge a "nation" over a few bad apples.
But again, still, it's the respect thing he has. Especially how he feels towards women. You just don't find men who actually understand women and can honor them properly.
I find this comment almost disturbing....how do you or anyone else know how he "feels" about women? If he wanted to "honor" the woman he's been with for nearly thirty years, don't you think he might have actually MARRIED her? Unless "honor" means something different to both of them. And I think it's just more than a little naive to think, that with all the time he has spent away from her earning his living, that he hasn't "gotten it on" with other women.
I think maybe a reality check is in order here.
Sorry to be blunt, but Alan Rickman is a man, an actor, and NOT god!
Although, I would give him "god" status for his role as Snape! LOL
IronLady June 1st, 2006, 6:32 pm Alan Rickman is speculation. The dangerous thing about stereotypes and cliche's that you start taking them for granted, believing them, let them become your personal truth and overrule the facts. You become blind for other impressions and only see your own view of the truth. We've all seen terrible examples of this in the past.
(On a side note: the Amsterdam example, no harm taken honestely. But I get the point you're making: I too, am sick of always defending myself on the drug issue to foreigners. I guess the media is a big influence in this. Facts: of the drug users in Amsterdam, 75% are foreign tourists and according to the statistics, the hard drug use is as big in Holland as it is in every country in the world. Which, of course, leaves the benefit of softdrugs a bit wobbly, in the sense that that's the reason they were legalised in the first place. In Holland (weed, pot) is legal to buy at he age of 18. But outside of Amsterdam the tourists are gone and the drug use is much lower then in Adam). Thought I'd get that cleared! :D
Now back to that God! Eh... Alan Rickman that is : a human being! That's better.

You are so right, sister! And I admit being guilty of doing the same thing from time to time throughout my life. I must say, it gets easier to recognize it in oneself with age, at least for me, anyway!
And as far as the Amsterdam thing, I am so glad you didn't take offense, because it wasn't my intention to do that. I think the reason we equate Amsterdam with drug use (and it isn't a widespread thing, that correlation) isn't because we think the Dutch are any bigger drug users than anyone else, it's just that your country chose to legalize it and give safe haven to hard drug users. If I'm not mistaken, and you can correct me if I'm wrong, but I think assisted suicide is legal there, too.
Some of us here think these sorts of things are abhorrent, but since this is not a political thread, I will leave it there.:nc:
Anyway, I apologize for ranting in my last post, but I really do get annoyed when people who are blessed and fortunate to live in America make disparaging comments about this country. We certainly aren't perfect, but there ain't no better place on earth to be from....and whatever the rest of the world thinks, what would they do without us?

severus_love June 2nd, 2006, 4:03 am The biggest reason Snape is my favorite character is because of Alan Rickman! There is one closeup of him in sorcerors stone where you really see his eyes and if that doesnt win you over nothing will. Then their's the voice who wouldn't want him whispering sweet nothings in your ear.

Assisted suicide. I'm glad to explain in fact. This is how it goes in Holland. when a person is terminally ill, a person with cancer for instance, with NO possibility of a recovery, that person is allowed to ask the doctor to put a stopper on his/her life. (I know that's a strange and a slightly unappropiate snape-parallel quote to use here, but I mean no harm, I just can't come up with a good translation, forgive me). However, if you're depressed and ask the same thing. Doctor says no.
About the world in general: a real paradise is nowhere to be found. And every country has it's up's and down's. I reckon a democracy has it's flawns too. Because the majority basically rules, that being said, fortunately, the minority always has a vote, and the big pro about a democracy is that it's freedom of speech for all.
About Alan. I developed my crush by coincidence. I went to cinema (SS) under protest and remember this. The moment they switched the camera to Snape in that sorting hat scene, I had goosebumps. And instant attraction. I never had that before with any movie actor in any particular movie. Celebrity crushes in the past all developed on a longer term. But he did that in the fraction of a second. That's magic.

Yeah, he was the first one to catch my eye too. Just watching him swish around with that hair and those robes....and the buttons! Sweet! I might not have bothered seeing the rest of the Potter flicks if it weren't to see him again!

America isn't actually a democracy, we are a representative Republic, true democracy is nothing more than "mob rule". And it's "freedom" in general we enjoy (unless some liberal comes along and tells you not to say this, or not to do that) not just freedom of speech. Sorry, I couldn't resist putting that in.

Thanks for clearing this up. I get what you mean, I meant this, one of the most significant things of a democracy (something that differs a democracy from let's say a dictatorship) is the freedom of speech availability. I would like to advise you V for Vendetta. This movie turns your own morals upside down. And it mirrors current times (terror and fear) from different perspectives (both sides). If it's possible do watch it, it's an explaination that personal interpretation of democracy can differ hugely. It's a real thinker this movie.
About those robes....those are sexy on him, I mean he fits them so elegantely, very sexy. Intentional? Probably not. It's almost haute couture. I wouldn't mind being his couturier though. lol
Desraelda June 5th, 2006, 11:53 pm Mesmer finally arrived. Firstly, I didn't have any of the problems with the sound as some did. That's why I originally didn't want to get the movie so I was relieved when the sound was okay.
It was fairly historically accurate. I know some people complained that it ended abruptly, but nothing is known about the last 20 years of Mesmer's life (according to my research), so the abrupt ending seems appropriate.
All in all, it was a great vehicle for Alan. And of course, there's the hair, the voice and the long swishing robes.
cazzaranda June 6th, 2006, 3:57 am All in all, it was a great vehicle for Alan. And of course, there's the hair, the voice and the long swishing robes.
Well, let's face it, that's why we watch Alan Rickman movies!!!
I think that was his most "attractive" role aside from Snape. It's not the kind of movie you want to watch over and over, in fact I only got through half of it the second time I tried to watch it, but for Alan fans and collectors, it's a must have, I suppose.
My only complaint with the sound was the ambient outdoor sounds that made some of the dialogue hard to hear. But then again, I am the queen of closed captioning, so it's hard to watch a flick without it....it becomes a crutch!
Anyway, glad you finally got to see Mesmer, Des. I sure wish they hadn't shut down our old thread!
mwbashful18 June 6th, 2006, 10:23 pm I'm back. Just graduated from high school and had a party and another party and another thing so I've been busy. But, my Rasputin arrived and it works in the VCR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
As for the last time I was posting regarding AR's "honor" of women, from what he has said in interviews and on the Die Hard commentary track, he seems to very much respect women and it is all said to be due to his mother and growing up without a father all his life (his father died when he was eight). My beef is that most men don't truly respect women in some way and he seems to. He is friends with many, he seems very tuned into what women like or need or want and he can understand them, and he always seems to be their champion (such as Bonnie Bedelia and how he felt about her character in Die Hard).
I think it sucks that we live in a world where a man such as AR cannot state that he respects women without people calling him "a guy like any other guy" who has probably screwed fans or something when he's away from RH. While I wonder about his relationship with her, I blame it on her, actually, for never marrying him. There was an interview where he explained that she didn't want to get married and didn't want to have children. He wanted to but I think he loves her too much to leave her for such a life. He also says very seriously that he loves his work and being an actor and he said if he did the family thing he never would have been an actor because he couldn't handle leaving family behind to go to a set. I respect that. But it's sad that he says he relies on his nieces to be the kids he never had. I think he'd have liked very much to have kids but I think the fact that RH is so independent allowed him the decision to be an actor and do movies while still having someone who cares for him.
Does anyone know if he went off to film Villa Golitsyn?
cazzaranda June 7th, 2006, 1:59 am Just graduated from high school
Congratulations! I am sorry to tell you that the best years of your life are officially over (just kidding, but really, when you get older you do look at your high school years as the best years, and you wish you could relive them, only knowing what you know now)
As for the last time I was posting regarding AR's "honor" of women, from what he has said in interviews
Life lessons.....don't believe everything you hear in a celebrity interview, don't believe everything your government tells you, and most important don't believe most of the stuff your "professors" at college will tell you. Do your own research and listen to both sides before you make up your mind.
I think it sucks that we live in a world where a man such as AR cannot state that he respects women without people calling him "a guy like any other guy" who has probably screwed fans or something when he's away from RH.
Ahem, just because AR claims to "respect" women that doesn't stop him from being a MAN. You are young and naive and haven't experienced the kind of things "men" can and will do to you. I am not suggesting that he is a predator or taking advantage of "fans". I only suggested that it's not realistic to think that he hasn't had other "relationships" of the carnal nature with some of the other women he's worked with while he is away from "home" for lengthy periods.
he said if he did the family thing he never would have been an actor because he couldn't handle leaving family behind to go to a set.
Apparently this wasn't a problem while he had to spend time away from RH.
Sometimes, even tho we love and adore our actors, we do need to have a reality check. He's a lovely man, a wonderful actor, but just another human. He doesn't walk on water or raise the dead. Well, maybe he can actually raise the dead...he did with me when he put on the Snape robes and wig.....LOL
Hermione75 June 7th, 2006, 2:09 am My beef is that most men don't truly respect women in some way and he seems to. Any man who takes the time to pick up the book " Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" can find out what women like, or need, to be their champion. We do not need a man from England to show American Guys how to treat a women. A man just needs to have the brain to pick up a book and educate themselves on the opposite sex.
I blame it on her, actually, for never marrying him.
I used to think the same way. Than I thought, " It takes two to Tango"
So if he is not married cause she did not wish to be, than hey, thats the way HE chose to live.

I never read that book, do you think Alan has?
And something else, if he wanted to have a family, why did he stay with a woman who allegedly didn't? She must have some amazing talents we don't know about.
I was just thinking today about an interview he did where he said something like he wished he had kids, and he just imagined a 12 and 14 year old just showing up or something like that....and I was thinking, at your age, those could have been your grandkids....LOL
Ah well, it's just too bad that that great NOSE gene won't be getting passed on to future generations!

Yeah, the nose gene....what a waste! He's still not too old to procreate, and maybe there is a little progeny out there somewhere we don't know about.
I still think it's a shame he wasn't born with the black hair and eye genes, he was just born to look like that!!! Still, he has pretty eyes.
mwbashful18 June 7th, 2006, 11:08 pm I've always been optimistic about people. I like to think the best of them, despite "human nature." So I'm content to think the best of him. I'm not saying he's God walking around. Just because he claims he is faithful to a woman he never married doesn't make him godlike, it just makes him a nice guy. I don't confuse him with celebrities like Brad Pitt because AR, despite being an actor, seems the type who has a small apartment/flat and lives like any other person. He just happens to have a neat job and a little more money than you might expect. But I don't think he's the same as any other celebrity. I have friends whose parents stayed together since they were 18 or 20 (though they are married) and I wouldn't expect the man to have dabbled in infidelity ever. I don't think getting married seals the deal as long as two people are in love. They don't need to have rings to be committed. So I feel confident that he can be any other normal person on the street, without "celebrity" hanging over his head.
Hermione75 June 8th, 2006, 1:37 am Life lessons.....don't believe everything you hear in a celebrity interview, don't believe everything your government tells you, and most important don't believe most of the stuff your "professors" at college will tell you. Do your own research and listen to both sides before you make up your mind.

He's talked about picking up his own laundry at the cleaners. Now how many American celebrities can you say that about? And he's also talked about not having an entourage, and when he walks onto a Hollywood set, he's by himself. I'm pretty sure the studios supply him with PAs at least but he doesn't seem to need his own PR guy and a personal trainer, etc.
weaver June 9th, 2006, 12:59 am Ahem, just because AR claims to "respect" women that doesn't stop him from being a MAN.
Not fair to assume he has had such relationships either. Just as some men take advantage, some men are honorable.
Best just to realize we will never know, and it's best both for him and for us not to speculate.

That's probably because he isn't exactly a household name. I don't think too many people even heard of him until he took on the role of Snape. And even then, it's mostly kids who don't recognize him without the wig. I think we adult fans just tend to blow his celebrity status out of proportion because WE know who he is. If you walked up to ten people on the street and asked them if they knew the name Alan Rickman, they would probably give you a blank stare!
Not fair to assume he has had such relationships either. Just as some men take advantage, some men are honorable.
True , but you are missing the point that I was trying to make. I think it's silly to be a sycophant and just assume all things about Rickman are pure and good and wonderful just because we happen to think he's a good looking guy who happens to be an actor. I'm just trying to keep things in perspective about him as a human being. It makes me crazy when girls go all nuts over him like he's some godlike entity. He's just an actor!
It's just a reality check, that's all! I adore his Snape portrayal, but I'm not out there stalking him or assigning qualities to his personality that I don't know he actually has. For all I know, he could be one of the "honorable" guys, but I'm not going to take everything an actor says in an interview for pure fact. It's just an opinion, and as it has once been said, opinions are like armpits, we all have them, and they all stink! :p
weaver June 9th, 2006, 2:26 am True , but you are missing the point that I was trying to make.

When you say:

You are as guilty of projecting your beliefs about what he is really like as those who want only to believe his P.R. Neither position is based on any personal knowledge of the man, so they are both biased and unfair.
One side wants to believe he's a saint, while the other wants to believe he is "the worst of libertines."
I'm merely suggesting that it is pure speculation by both sides.
I'm not sure it's fair to try to teach people a lesson about hero-worship by denigrating a man's character based on nothing more than your opinion.
Which is worse, to have a case of hero-worship, or to practically accuse the man of loose morals?
A little idealism is good for balancing the cynicism that a little living produces.
Sometimes it just feels good to think the best of others, even if it's only an illusion. In most cases of celebrity-worship, it's pretty harmless, and people tend to get over it at some point.
