Ms.Topaz and her secret

This fic is about Ms.Topaz, a Muggleborn with wacky habits, who finally makes friends and something more!EDIT:Hey! By something more, I mean she falls for Sirius! Please comment.
Obviously, I’m not JKR and am trying to use her creations for the entertainment of the readers (and, of course, me!)

Chapter #1

The weird witch

“Ms.Topaz, rush to Madam Pomfrey –quick!” said Prof. Flowgrum as our dear friend was attacked by the giant Adjeteal leaves – they were dull green in colour and chewed up your hands if you were as foolish as to dig your hands into them – though, that was exactly what Ms.Topaz had done. She had been lost in thoughts about her progress in Herbology when she had accidentally stroked the ‘soft’ leaves. However much she tried, Ms.Topaz went to pieces during Herbology. She managed to do well in Potions and even Transfiguration – but her situation in Herbology was pathetic.

Ms.Topaz or Sweety Topaz was a Muggleborn witch and had enrolled at Hogwarts only the previous year (her fourth year). She had been trained at ‘Willy Institute for People with Magical Traits’ until then and it had to be closed when it was attacked by the wretched Death Eaters. Though many of her friends (and foes) had moved on to other schools or simply dropped out, she had come here because, she was an orphan and her orphanage was willing to send her here only. Maybe because she was an orphan or because she was brought up in a not-so-friendly atmosphere, she could never make up friends.

She was shy, reserved and had very low self-confidence that made her problems more and more complicated. She was wacky too as she had a very tiny pocketable doll called Renée with whom she talked causing her classmates to throw furtive glances at her and exchange bemused looks.

Chapter #2

Sweety’s friends

Anyone else in her place would have, by now, known half the school and made a minimum of 20 friends but she had done neither. She had talked to a few of her fellow Gryffindors only when she had had no other alternative. Many had tried to make friends with her – including a red-haired green-eyed girl who was very good at Charms and a silver-haired dreamy-eyed girl who was simply the best at Divinition. But, Sweety had not responded in an apposite manner and she knew that. They had, at last, decided to leave her alone. She didn’t want to be pitied just because she was an orphan. She wanted to be accepted for what her qualities were and not for what her background was. She didn’t know whether or not she imagined, but she certainly felt the inferiority complex in her raising its ugly head and causing her to lose all her senses at crucial times. If there was anything that she could do without pain – it was smiling. She smiled when she was congratulated for scoring good marks, when she was asked questions that didn’t concern her by her classmates.

She was also very weak which meant that she fainted every now and then and needed to be in the Hospital Wing for most of her life at Hogwarts. She ate and ate and yet, what she ate was not enough to keep her going. It was in the Hospital Wing that she made a few friends – a blue-eyed fourth-year guy who always had disastrous Potion classes (something Sweety found very amusing as she had disastrous Herbology classes) and a brown-haired sixth-year Gryffindor who had health-problems almost twice a month.

As she and the brown-haired boy were regulars (at the Hospital Wing) they made very good friends. He was very bright and soft-spoken too. He never once asked about her parents but talked in depth about things that both of them loved - like ‘How to be better at Herbology’, ‘Why Divinition is a bizarre science’ and ‘Why are ghosts transparent’ - all made-up theories of course.

He was part of a four – member gang that included James Potter and Sirius Black – the cleverest and yet, humorous pair of friends you could ever find. Sweety, however, would only talk to Remus during their medication session when he was alone. Remus’ friends visited him frequently and talked to him for hours. Sweety, who was in the next bed, often heard a part of their talks and wanted to be friends with such a cool gang. But, of course, they would never allow a bizarre crackpot like her into their gang – she thought.

Sweety talked to very few people and hence, she had almost no visitors at the Hospital Wing. But, that never bothered her. In fact, she felt comfortable that way. She had Renée for company and chatted with it as though it was her best friend.

Chapter #3

Renée

Sweety was in the Hospital Wing again but, this time – because, she had fallen into the bed of Agacertan plants. She had just arrived and was narrating what had happened in the Herbology class to Renée.

“-then, believe it or not Renée, I felt as though needles were pricking my whole body– the next thing I knew, I was here with Madam Pomfrey.”

“So, that’s how you ended up here”

“Oh, Hi Remus! I didn’t see you arrive”

“That was apparent, of course. When you are in deep talks with someone close to your heart, you tend to be oblivious of the surroundings.”

“Does that mean...er…do you...-?” Sweety didn’t know how he had found about her relationship with Renée but just couldn’t convert her anxiety into words.

“So, how are you feeling now?” he asked placing himself on the next bed.

She was about to answer when the door swung open and in came – the Gang as she called them inside her head. She tossed around in her bed and shut her eyes tight.

The guys didn’t seem to be talking as she couldn’t hear a thing. She felt that familiar grave feeling in her stomach – it was because of her presence that they weren’t talking! How obtuse she had been! She ought not to have been talking with Remus. She felt like an unwanted idiot, a -

“Ms. Topaz, could you please stop pretending to be asleep? We have only come to see you and not to attack you!” said a cool voice and when the words had sunk into her distressed mind, she opened her eyes slowly to find James Potter and the Gang surrounding her.

Had they come to see her??? Oh, how stupid she had been?

“One would think you were avoiding visitors!” said Sirius Black.
She sat up and managed to reply – “No, it is just that I thought you had come to visit Remus here”

“For once, Moony is in perfect health conditions –” said Peter Pettigrew

“-and managed to tell us about the shy Ms.Topaz and her little friend!” said James Potter.

“Oh!” said Sweety and went a deep shade of magenta.

“There’s nothing to worry about, you know!” said Remus reassuringly.

“Yeah, if I was not visited by anyone in the Hospital Wing, I too would go mad and start talking to such things” said Peter Pettigrew and instantaneously, Sweety felt her throat burn and her eyes become moist.

She tried to smile but, she couldn’t quite do it.

There was an awkward pause which Remus managed to break.
“-Don’t mind Wormtail. He didn’t mean it!”

“Of course not!” said Peter.

One look at his face and Sweety knew that he had only tried to console her but unfortunately ended up doing the opposite.

“So, this is Renée!” said James Potter and all turned to him who didn’t seemed to have noticed whatever had happened there.

“Yep” said Sweety seeing him hold Renée in his fingers and examining it as though it was concealing some magical powers.

“What sort of charm have you used to make it reply?” he asked with genuine interest.

Sweety burst out laughing. When she saw all of them eying her suspiciously, she stopped laughing and said, “It is an ordinary doll, it doesn’t talk – it is just that I talk to it – I bought in a Muggle shop” she added when they continued to look wary.

“Oh, well…so, you know a lot about Muggles, right?”

Sweety looked at him and held his gaze – she knew why he was asking that. He had fallen for his classmate Lily Potter and very much wanted to impress her. She wanted to tell him that she would be of help to him in whatever possible way.

“Well?” he demanded.

“Yeah” she said still not able to bring the words in her mind.

The Gang exchanged meaningful looks but Sweety didn’t know what they meant. She looked from one face to another – Peter Pettigrew, James Potter, Sirius Black and finally, Remus who seemed to have been waiting for such a moment.

“Remus, do you want me to go away?” she asked, unable to keep her face straight.

“Hey! This is your place. We are the intruders –” said Sirius Black and looked at James Potter who said – “It is just that Ms.Topaz knows more than we thought she did!”

“Oh!” she said and blushed.

“This is not a place to hold meetings!” came a boom and Madam Pomfrey followed it bustling in.

“We’ll see you later”

“Get well, soon!”

And they departed.

Chapter #4

Mudbloods and friends

It had been a fortnight since her last Hospital visit – something that surprised her too and this didn’t go unnoticed by her newfound friends.

“This is a school record – I suppose – Ms.Topaz not having an accident for 14 days!” joked James, his eyes twinkling with mischief, as they all had lunch in the Great Hall.

“It’s a miracle, really” said Remus.

It was the rare times when the Gang sat with her eating the food and sharing a few jokes. But, they always had time to check on her.

As they sat chatting and laughing, James stopped suddenly.

“Evans!” he said dreamily and his face lit up when Lily walked into the Great Hall to sit at the far end of the table. She kept throwing dirty glances at James and the rest. Sweety didn’t know what to do or what to say – she had always felt sorry for James. He was smart, he was clever, he was caring and he was handsome too! But, Lily seemed to ignore every good thing in him and always spotted him in mischief which ended their or rather James’ relationship in trouble.

She looked at the other members of the Gang – Remus was genuinely worried, Peter pathetic and Sirius – well, his usual unique self.

After a while, they all bid goodbye(s) and split up to go to their respective classes. Sweety had History of Magic class next where Prof.Binns droned on and on and on.

Sweety was returning from her last class reflecting upon how good the Gang had been to her. It had all started with Remus. It was not the first time that she thought of him as her elder brother. She knew a festival that Muggles celebrated when a sort of band would be tied onto the brother’s wrist by the sister. (A/N. I haven’t completely made it up, you know. A part of it is true and exists in my home country) She imagined herself tying a band to Remus’ wrist and facing the incomprehensible looks on the faces of the Gang – and later, revealing the truth and explaining all about the –

“Oy, Mudblood! What brings you here?”

Sweety turned to face Malfoy and his clan – the seventh-year Slytherins.

“Little Princess is alone without her bodyguards! C’mon guys – let us go away or the great warriors would come barking on us!” said Rookwood.

Snatching Renée out of her hands, “What in the name of Merlin is this? Did your protectors or rather the ‘knights’ gift it to you?” exclaimed Malfoy mockingly.

Sweety might be physically weak but after all, she was a Gryffindor and her temper rose to its maximum tolerable value. Her face became red in colour.

“Give it back!” said Sweety through clenched teeth.

“Why? What would you do if we don’t give it? Let’s see whether your knights come to protect you!”

It happened in a blink! James and Sirius had appeared out of nowhere and drawn out their wands. Remus pulled her away gently and calmly steered her out to the safety of the Gryffindor Common Room. Peter followed them and they reached the furthermost corner to sit relaxed.

Noone spoke for a while. James and Sirius practically jumped through the portrait hole - it was as though their ears were on fire and their faces were red with anger -had the situation not demanded seriousness, it would have been very funny!

“Why on earth did you go alone? Just be in company!” said a furious James.

‘My God! He does look scary when he is angry’ thought Sweety and managed to mumble “I…..I was lost in thoughts about–”

“Is there anything graver than being cursed by a dirty clan of Slytherins?” fumed Sirius and looked at her devilishly.

Sweety’s eyes were slowly becoming moist – tears were shining in her eyes – she hadn’t done anything wrong – why were these friends behaving like this? Hitherto captivated tears flowed through her eyes and she got up to leave the place.

“Hey!” said Sirius and pushed her back into her seat.
“We were just joking!” James seemed shocked by the outburst of tears. Apparently, Remus had expected this to happen.

“We are sorry!”

“Oh, it was nothing. Just got screwed up and well…never mind that. I shall go to the dorm and bring my books. I’ve got to complete my essay on Vertdemonia plants” said Sweety unsuccessfully trying to stem the flow of tears.
