Chapter 1 The Trip Back
The boarding of the Hogwarts Express five days earlierto carry the students back to Kings Cross was not as exciting as usual, nor was the end of the year feast. Partly because the school year was ending five days before the normal time it would end. Even the weather seemed to reflect the hopelessness and despair of the students and faculty, as the sky filled with blackened clouds that threatened rain and thunder.
Normally people had been happy to get back on the train to take them home, but now no one wanted to leave the school, mainly because no one was sure if they’d return. A group of students from Hufflepuff had even barricaded their selves in their common room, demanding that they be left to their beloved school. Eventually, the professors had to gather up and break down the entrance to the common room and carry the students out.
Harry Potter was trotting down the hill, looking at nothing but the ground as he took he steps, making a slow march towards the trolleys that would carry him and his classmates back to the train station, where he would eventually be dropped back off at the Dursleys one last time. Harry felt no sadness towards the possibility that he would not be able to return to the school, because he had decided that he would not be returning at all.
“Harry….HARRY!” Harry heard footsteps behind him, but he did not bother stopping to wait, nor turning to see who it was. The footsteps were running now, and soon his best friends Ron and Hermione had joined him.
“Why didn’t you tell us you had left?” Ron asked, looking at Harry, but Harry did not look up.
“I just wanted to get out,” Harry grunted, still staring at the ground.
“But You could’ve came to get us, we were looking for you all over the place,” Hermione said slowly.
“Sorry,” Harry grunted again, now reaching to get into one of the carriages. He was used to seeing the winged creatures that piloted the carriage, but still couldn’t help to look at them when he got in.
“What do they look like?” Ron asked, taking a daring stab at trying to start a conversation.
“Let’s hope you never have to see them,” Harry said, looking at the floor. Hermione hopped in and was about to close the door when someone shouted “WAIT!”
“Thanks for holding the door,” Neville said as he got in and sat down next to Harry, “I was afraid I’d be riding by myself. Did any of you see Ginny?
Ron and Hermione looked at Harry, but he simply stared out the window.
“She told me she’d be catching a ride with some of her other friends,” Hermione told Neville, while making sure she skipped the reason why.
Neville closed the door, and shortly after the carriage began to move. The ride back was in total silence, no one bothering to speak. The clouds had finally began to pour down rain in what seemed like sheets.
The carriage finally stopped and Harry hopped out first, not even bothering to put on a cloak.
“Harry, you really should put your cloak on,” Hermione said as she hopped out last, wrapping hers tightly around her, but once again Harry ignored her and kept walking, not even bothering to look for Hagrid.
“Hey, Harry, HARRY!!” Hagrid shouted. Harry stopped and turned to a see a man standing three feet above the crowd of students running towards him.
“We’re going to get onto the train to find a compartment, okay?” Ron said, as opened the door for Hermione to get in. Harry simply nodded.
“I didn’t see you at the feast, and were ‘fraid that I wouldn’t be seeing yah again until next year,” Hagrid said, “you can’t go scaring me like that Harry.”
“Sorry I scared you,” Harry said slowly, “ I just couldn’t get myself to go to the feast. It wouldn’t feel right.”
“I understand what you mean, with Dumbledore…” Hagrid stopped, “He’s going to be missed by everyone.” Hagrid put his massive arm on Harry and pulled him into a bone crunching hug. Harry could feel the tears falling from Hagrid’s face, and was not ashamed to feel his own tears wash down his face.
“Ah, no need to shed tears right now,” Hagrid said as he released Harry, “ Dumbledore will always be here for us, but for now we still have to finish the job.” Harry nodded. He didn’t want to tell Hagrid, but he really didn’t want to think about Voldemort, or anything he had to do with.
“You take care of yerself this summer Harry,” Hagrid continued, “And if those muggles, Dursleys, give you any trouble, then let me know so I can put them in their grave,” Hagrid said smiling.
“Well you had better get going , I wouldn’t want you to miss yer train.” Harry nodded then turned and started walking, but felt himself turn sharply around and grab Hagrid into another hug.
“Thanks Hagrid, for everything,” Harry said softly.
“No problem, that’s what I am here for,” Hagrid said releasing Harry, “ No you go ‘head and board up, and be sure to write me over the vacation.”
“I will, Harry said, grabbing his trolley, “Bye Hagrid”
“Not bye, see yeh later” Hagrid said, more tears filling his eyes. Harry nodded and smiled, then climbed on board and began to search for Ron and Hermione
