Awakened July 11th, 2006, 9:00 am Well, I searched and nothing came up so I assume this hasn't been discussed.
The title says it all. Who in your opinion are the best villains of all time and why?
My two favorites are:
1) Voldemort: How could you not choose Voldemort? He is the reason why Harry is where he is today. Had it not been for Voldemort, countless people would not have died and Harry would have his parents. Voldemort is the force behind the whole plot.
2) Annie Wilkes: Anyone who has seen the movie or read the book Misery knows how evil she is. She's insane but thinks she's right at the same time... bad combo.
Nessa_Fefalas July 12th, 2006, 1:36 am The villain in Batman Begins is very suave. I kinda admire him. But let's face it, the greatest villain of all time is Darth Vader :D
Blood_River July 12th, 2006, 2:02 am John Ritter as the Robot Ted from 2nd season Buffy. I don't know why exactly, but I think it was because instead of just being really powerful in the hero's normal battle domain, he had all his power concentrated off the field in her personal life. It was like she couldn't really fight him because no matter what he did, she had no proof, and he had all her support structure on his side, and he was in some ways "not evil enough" which made him more evil. How can a Slayer defeat her mom's boyfriend?
Sort of like Snape is to Harry. He's not "larger than life" like Voldemort which made him so hard to fight -- he could hurt Harry so much more in some ways and Harry couldn't do anything about it because he was a teacher and trusted by all the other adults. He never did anything outright enough for Harry to fight back, and that kind of villain is very creepy.
TakanoriFan July 12th, 2006, 2:13 am Sephiroth is the ultimate bishounen love...
Besides him I like too many others to count. I generally tend to pick out the villian as my favourite character in movies and such. Sometimes I don't even mean to, I end up picking someone who turns out bad near the end >.>;
Aphasia July 12th, 2006, 2:27 am Hanibal Lecter. I loved that character. He was so smooth, educated, well spoken and well bred and just evil! You would never have known what lurked in his mind until it was far far too late.
lady_a July 12th, 2006, 9:24 am Ooooh....this is a hard one. Prepare to be list-ified!
Voldemort – Come on, snake-face, supreme evil, reign of darkness, so terrifying that people won’t even say his name….what is there not to like about this guy??
Sauron – not the original Dark Lord of Middle Earth, no, but his apprentice. Now that’s evil is it not? Killing your own master so that you can thief his crown (in a manner of speaking) and have his whole “reign of evil” thing. Oh yes, go the usurpers!
Raistlin – (From the Dragonlance Chronicles/Legends) - come on, the guy actually manages to go back in time and be his own mentor, defeat the queen of darkness, become a god and destroy the world. All while coughing profusely.
Lestat – ok, so Lestat isn’t particularly evil, but he is technically a villain. We all love Lestat, right?
Vader - Come on, we all knew Darth Vader was gonna pop up sometime right? Says it all though. Vader.
Mad_Druid July 12th, 2006, 10:30 am 1. Spike from Buffy (Before he fell in love with her and became a wuss)

tamuchi July 12th, 2006, 5:17 pm Although I don't really think of him as a villain (though Disney does...), I love Chernabog from the Night on Bald Mountain portion of Fantasia. He's the coolest looking demon ever.
Then there are The Gentlemen from the Season 4 BtVS episode Hush.
The Joker is always a good villain, as is Darkseid, Galactus and the Sentinels.
There are probably more I need to add to my list, but my brain feels all mushy right now...

keithburner August 6th, 2006, 4:01 am voldemort(which i'm sure many have said)because he is obviously evil, but more than that.He is human, and had it not been for the death of his mother or abandonment of his father,he probably would've become a very respected wizard.I think it's interesting to guess what a person might become had situations been different.Instead though he became the most feared wizard of all time.

IronLady November 18th, 2006, 10:14 pm Hannibal 'the cannibal'
The Joker
luciaweasley November 20th, 2006, 12:38 am The bad guy I feared most of all (when I was little) was THE JOKER. I couldn't sleep for nights because of him!!!
But I have to say I've allways liked Disney's villains: the classic witches with their long fingers, cold expression and creepy laugh, they were really scary, specially "Maléfica" (don't want to find the translation, I watched it in spanish), from The Sleeping Beauty. She was GREAT, really baaaad. The same kind are the witches of Chronicles of Narnia (the books), I love them too.
And Scar, and "Gastón" (Beauty and the Beast), and Frollo, they're amazing!
Some other ones I really really loved were:
CASTOR TROY (Face Off)
CYRUS THE VIRUS (Con Air)
THE BUTCHER (I think that was the name, it was the bad guy in Gangs of New York)
They are of those kind of bad people that attract you, even though you know they're terrible people, they have this something that makes you love them as characters.
Just_Hannah November 20th, 2006, 1:24 pm Begby the psycho from Trainspotting was cool. Don`t know if he counts as a villain though!
Also, Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham in ROPOT was class.
IronLady November 20th, 2006, 6:00 pm Begby the psycho from Trainspotting was cool. Don`t know if he counts as a villain though!
Also, Alan Rickman as the Sheriff of Nottingham in ROPOT was class.
LOL. I thought Begbie was pretty funny. He didn't scare me one bit. But I don't know if that's the point of t his thread. A 'great' villain, in my book overshows the good guy in 'sympathy'. How ironic that may sound. I thought tim roth in Rob Roy was good too.
edictofnantes November 21st, 2006, 5:41 am Colonel Maybourne. He's a crook. But you just can't help but like him. And, because I'm listening to the Poke'mon theme song for some reason unknown to god -- Team Rocket. ;)
Eir November 22nd, 2006, 7:42 am THE BUTCHER (I think that was the name, it was the bad guy in Gangs of New York)
Totally. Daniel Day-Lewis kicked butt in that. I just wanted to give a shout out to Gary Oldman in The Fifth Element. He's so...yucky in that movie, heh. Agent Smith in The Matrix is a pretty good bad guy. Hmm, what else... Oh oh, I know! Kaiser Soze in The Usual Suspects. Heck yeah. Duuude, I love the ending to that movie!
Xenophanes November 22nd, 2006, 12:10 pm The bad guy I feared most of all (when I was little) was THE JOKER. I couldn't sleep for nights because of him!!!
Same here. Mark Hamill just freaked me out.
Wizard_Pupil November 22nd, 2006, 3:13 pm Hard to say only a few:: I LOVE VILLAINS
I like Villains more than heroes, I more emphaty for villians than for heroes!!!!
The classic villains, sad they always die at the end of the movie XDD
PandaPrincess November 22nd, 2006, 4:18 pm My fav is Prince Zuko from Avatar, I think he's hot and I sorta feel for him, getting banished from the country he was born in and the only way to get back is to catch the Avatar, you'd go crazy too if that were you
EBJ23 January 24th, 2007, 10:30 pm I love Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII. He's amazing. I also love Barbossa from Pirates of the Caribbean.
Jedi_Girl January 25th, 2007, 4:19 am Dracula the one that was in Buffy. It was funny though.
Davy Jones from Pirates Of The Caribbean. :rotfl:
cgold January 25th, 2007, 4:36 am My favourite villains have been:

Lucius Malfoy
Captain Hook
The previous 3 all played by Jason Isaacs
Snape
Darth Maul
Gul Dukat from Deep Space Nine
Dick Dastardly from the Wacky Races
Pox Voldius January 25th, 2007, 8:46 am in addition to the ones already mentioned in this thread so far...in no particular order...
Pinhead (Hellraiser)
Kronos (Highlander the Series)
Nurse Ratched (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest)
Jack Torrance (The Shining)
The Queen (Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs)
Rasputin
Dr Caligari (The Cabinet of Dr Caligari)
Man (Bambi)
Big Brother (1984)
Frank-N-Furter (The Rocky Horror Picture Show)
Chucky (Child's Play)
Jafar (Aladdin)
The Bug in the Edgar Suit (Men in Black)
Mr Potter (It's a Wonderful Life)...couldn't resist putting that one on the list
Alex (A Clockwork Orange)
The Terminator (The Terminator)
Cruella De Vil (101 Dalmations)
Satan (Paradise Lost)...best character in that book, if you've ever had to read it...
Jack the Ripper
Ed Gein (real-life serial killer in Wisconsin, was the basis for a number of fictional characters, including Norman Bates and Buffalo Bill)
Senator Joseph McCarthy (responsible for the anti-communist witch hunts of the Cold War era)
Tomás de Torquemada (first Grand Inquisitor in the Spanish Inquisition)
Dolores Umbridge (OotP, Hogwarts High Inquisitor)...surprised that no one's mentioned her yet
President Andrew Jackson (signed the Indian Removal Act into law, which subsequently led to the Trail of Tears)
Dr Josef Mengele (AKA "the Angel of Death", Nazi SS officer & physician at Auschwitz, known for his gruesome human experiments)
Hysteria January 25th, 2007, 11:07 am Lestat from Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicals not exactly the typical villain but Im counting him...
HiMyNameIzz January 28th, 2007, 4:24 am Professor Moriarty from Sherlock Holmes takes my cake. Other cool villians include Dracula (from Dracula), Estella (from Great Expectations), and Scar (from Lion King).
DarkDranzer February 11th, 2007, 9:34 am Galvatron (G1 Transformers), voiced by Leonard Nimoy in Transformers: the Movie and an absolute lunatic in Season 3. It sorta made me laugh and ponder his insanity and anger management issues!!
Cyclonus (G1 Transformers), loyal second-in-command and polar opposite of the mad Decepticon leader Galvatron, he had a smooth, deep...slightly British accent. He was a cunning and deadly warrior who would've usurped Galvy if he weren't so loyal to him. Cyc also proved to be quite honorable and dedicated to the Decepticon Cause as well as showing grudging respect to his arch rival/foe Ultra Magnus *by saving his life*. In fact, I think Cyc's kinda similar to Professor Snape in a few ways.
luciaweasley February 12th, 2007, 10:29 pm Scar (from Lion King).
I love Scar... Great, GREAT villain.
Gwenhwyfar28 February 14th, 2007, 11:49 pm got to agree with Scar! ;) ahh i love Jeremy Irons!
& pretty much anything Gary Oldman does (grrwoof!)
Chris February 15th, 2007, 12:03 am To me the most endearing villians of all time were the ones I could sometimes relate to. Mob movies tend to have endearing villians - you end up rooting for the bad guys. HBP began to put a human face on Tom Riddle, and at times you began to feel sorry for him, but at least to me the bad guys i can root for (and I can't root for Voldy) are the ones that are my favorites.
potterposse February 15th, 2007, 12:44 am The Joker! I love the Joker!
Weazleby February 15th, 2007, 1:56 am Jafar, definitely. He and the parrot, they were so funny.
But really, really evil villain: that British soldier from The Patriot (aka the actor who play Lucius Malfoy in the movies). He was SO EVIL, you were really looking forward for him to die at the end.
MinaMurray February 16th, 2007, 12:33 pm The Twins in Matrix2
The Ringwraiths in Lord of the rings
Lucius Malfoy, Bellatrix Lestrange (i don't like a lot Voldy)
Catwoman (by Michelle Pfeiffer, not Halle Berry... :grumble: )
Lestat from Anne Rice's The Vampire Chronicals not exactly the typical villain but Im counting him... yeah! he's great!
ahhh!! how could i forgot him?? Darth Vader!
and Darth Maul!
The Martians in Mars attacks!
TheNecromancer February 16th, 2007, 3:05 pm #1 Darth Vader! #2 Morgoth from Silmarillian #3 Dr Hanibal Lector #4 Dr Loveless from WildWildWest show loved it when I was a kid. #5 He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named.
Chris February 16th, 2007, 5:38 pm Oh yes, Dr Lector (just from Silence of the Lambs and Red Dragon / Manhunter). Anthony Hopkins IS Dr Lector. I still remember my mother "hanging around" to watch my reaction to a couple of the scenes in that movie. One of my all time favorites.
What does make a great villain? I put my two cents in above; but I bet others disagree with me :).
Tramen February 18th, 2007, 12:46 am Any villian played by Alan Rickman - he's one of the many actors out there who just kicks *** when he plays bad guys!
mcorleone February 20th, 2007, 2:30 pm Darth Vader hands down.
In Harry Potter, I would have to say Severus Snape. I wouldn't say he's my favorite character but one of the most interesting, intriguing, and complex characters out of any series I've read.
Near February 21st, 2007, 10:35 pm AGENT SMITH!!
http://z.about.com/f/wiki/e/en/thumb/7/7c/Agent_smith.jpg/150px-Agent_smith.jpg
vlad February 21st, 2007, 11:18 pm Darth Vader is the best ever. After him, Jaws, Rosa Kleb and Scaramanga are my favourite Bond villains. Lord Voldemort, Scar, Hannibal Lecter are also worth mentioning.
Iqen February 23rd, 2007, 11:21 am I say Magneto(X-men) and Agent Smith(Matrix) are the best villains ever.
And of course Captain Barbosa(PotC 1)
Jezzer350 February 23rd, 2007, 11:40 am Mine HAS to be Sidious/Palpatine, I could write an essay for why.
He made his way to the top of the republic and lead the Separatists from behind the scenes. He knew exactly what he was doing. And, let's face it, he beat Yoda, sad I know but still.
Cassiopeia March 16th, 2007, 2:41 pm Darth Vader is the daddy of all villains.
But Ursula from the little mermaid is kind of a cool villain. Actually, come to think of it, she kind of reminds me of my aunt.
popcornzyum March 16th, 2007, 5:24 pm number 1 HAS to be Voldemort - i love the way he was played in GoF by Ralph Fiennes
Others:

Montse April 15th, 2007, 4:34 am VOLDEMORT,cruela de vil, hades from disney hercules
Artemis_Fowl_2 April 24th, 2007, 7:58 pm Voldemort
He's just pure evil and doesn't have an ounce of love in him. And he wants to take over the Wizarding world so you have to give him credit for trying that. He is also a very powerful villian as wizards go.
Itachi
Like Voldemort, he is pure evil. I like that he spared his brother, Sasuke, and challenged Sasuke to fight him when Sasuke's skills and want for revenge were high. Who doesn't love a good fight between good and evil? He is also a very powerful villian as far as ninjas go.
Dr. Evil
You just have to love a villian who is stuck being evil in the old ways and has a pet cat.
Tulleskirt April 24th, 2007, 8:09 pm Abigail Williams from The Crucible and...every New York Yankee. :D
Dumbridge April 24th, 2007, 10:57 pm Q-Star Trek: The next generation- he's not intentionally evil, but he has annoying and sometimes sick ideas of fun.
Melkor- falls under category of "insanly smart" he waits until everyone else has finished creating beauty and then introduces entropy(similiarly-the lone power from young wizards series)
Suaruman&Vader- betrayers ...lowest circle of hell... you get the picture
_Riddikulus_ April 25th, 2007, 2:50 am My favourite villan would have to be Aunt Medousa from the Disney movie the Rescuers.
Wright1771 April 25th, 2007, 10:05 am The Master, Dr. Who. Roger Del Gardo, not the later model!
xhanax315 April 27th, 2007, 1:20 am Hanibal Lecter. I loved that character. He was so smooth, educated, well spoken and well bred and just evil! You would never have known what lurked in his mind until it was far far too late.
I love him! Voldemort and Darth Vader.
Tarreth May 8th, 2007, 3:20 am my fave villans are

i'd also have to say any bad guy from x-men: evolution is a favorite. :D i love watching old cartoons, so x-men and thundercats bad guys are pretty awesome to me!!
there's more that i can't think of now...
Shadowdark May 9th, 2007, 7:33 pm Ooh Milificent is just amazing for anyone who's played Kingdom Hearts or been to Disney World! =] Also, Magneto and Voldemort are awesome, but my fave has to be Emma Frost from X-Men, although she is eventually good lol.

Kelfa23 June 5th, 2007, 9:55 pm I've always had a things for anything and everything Disney so thats where my list is mostly inspired from.
Malificent-The Sleeping Beauty...easily the scariest and most evil.
Fantasia-The Chernabog....most mysterious and coolest design.
Aladdin-Jafar...funniest, plus this one holds a special place in my heart because Aladdin was the first major musical I directed.
Star Wars-Darth Vadar...come on, gotta give the nod to the most charismatic villan of all time.
jemlia June 10th, 2007, 12:50 pm -The murderer in Loves Music Loves to Dance by Mary Higgins Clark. I'm not gonna give anything away, but let me just say that guy is a freak.
Oooooh! He is freaky isn't he? James Patterson does great villains as well.
I loved Liam Neeson as the villain in Batman Begins and, of course, Alan Rickman in..... hmmmm actually just about everything.:p. Ralph Fiennes is creepy as Voldemort too and I liked David Tennant as Barty Crouch Jnr.
hippy June 10th, 2007, 2:25 pm has got to be darth vader (he does tragically redeem himself in the end)
Saoirse June 10th, 2007, 3:18 pm Darth Vader

ShadowAngel June 10th, 2007, 3:27 pm Draco,he's not exactly a villain but he's really all that innocent.
Voldemort,creeps me out like hell
Snape,as mean as he is,you gotta love his insults towards harry and his friends.
Ben from LOST,he's manipulative, creepy, and cruel, all the makings of a good villain.
Sawyer from LOST,he's funny as hell and the survivors hated him but he's starting to redeem himself(at least in my eyes he is).

Sephiran June 16th, 2007, 8:46 am I'm absolutely sure I'm mentioning villians no one has heard about here.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/7/7c/Sepheac2.jpg
Sephiroth from Final Fantasy VII. He is arguably one of the best villians of all time. He is said by many, many people to be the best villian of all time, but no one knows who Sephiran is.. sadly. He is also responsible for the death of a major protagonist within the game, the topic becoming the subject of one of the most popular video game spoilers in history.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/a/a6/Sephiroth-killing-aerith.jpg
YTMND edited this scene and put Snape's face on Sephiroth and Dumbledore's face on Aerith, the girl. It's pretty funny. Some of you might know.
Second character.. totally unknown to you people.
I can't find his picture.
Manfloy. He is one of the antagonists of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War, this guy is totally evil. He wants to bring back the Dark God Loptous by brainwashing Alvis, and his half-sister Diadora who is the main character's wife, get them together so they can have children and so he can use one as the reincarnation of the dark god.
However, the best villian of all, is Sephiran. Sounds like Sephiroth? He's the guy from FE9 and 10.
Can't find a picture.
He's totally innocent in FE9, first you find him as a monk and rescue him from prison and that is the first time you see him. He is revealed by the Empress of Begnion to be the Prime Minister of Begnion. Then, the next time you see him is in the end of the game when he talks to Ike, the main character, after he defeats the mad king Ashnard. When Ike leaves, he says that the seeds of war are about to grow all across the world.
He was right. Begnion fights Gallia to the death. The goddess wakes up when the dark god Yune was awoken. The main characters try to infiltrate the Guiding Tower where the Goddess lies. In the second last floor, we find out that Sephiran was behind everything. The death of Ike's father, war with Ashnard, war of Begnion and Gallia, and alot of more things, alot more. You don't even know 1/16 of this guy. Anyway, why did he do all this? He was a supporter of the goddess Ashera and she said if Laguz and Beorc don't get along in 1000 years she would destroy the world.. but Sephiran wanted to fulfill this promise early because he says that there is no hope.
That's it from me.
Fleur du mal June 16th, 2007, 8:51 am You're right. Never heard of either of them. But then the last computer game I played was Super Mario Brothers for gameboy generation I.
Sephiran June 16th, 2007, 8:55 am I'm guessing that you know about that turtle-dragon thing, Bowser?
Fleur du mal June 16th, 2007, 9:00 am didn't know his name, but sure I remember the big turtle! Back then I didn't give it a single thought, but in retrospection - whoever gets the idea to make a TURTLE, who are among the cutest, most harmless animals on the planet, the villain of a video game?
Sephiran June 16th, 2007, 9:04 am You reminded me of a turtle I saw with my friends while chatting and hanging out in the park we were in.. anyway..
http://www.themushroomkingdom.net/mariopedia/trophy/bowser.jpg
Rawr?
Fleur du mal June 16th, 2007, 9:26 am did that turtle viciously attack you and tried to abduct your girlfriend...?
Sephiran June 16th, 2007, 9:28 am No.. but a mighty black dog which looked really like the Sirius in the Azkaban movie in size, shape, volume, etc. tried to bite me.
In the game, though, I had to protect Princess Peach and beat the stuffing out of it.
Fleur du mal June 16th, 2007, 9:33 am
I don't believe Bowser qualifies for the Best Villains of all times though. I don't think he'd make the top 100 even. The sabre tiger from Ice Age - well, why not? But a turtle just doesn't have the certain je-ne-sais-quoi.
Sephiran June 16th, 2007, 9:37 am Perhaps, but it has one quality of being one of the best villians of all time: simply, being the absolute oldest and the greatest nemesis of Mario. He can't even talk and he isn't all that evil.. oh well.
Another very good villian, worthy enough to mention, is Bill Sikes from Oliver Twist. I'm glad I'm typing down a villian which you people actually know.
The sabre tiger from the Ice Age huh? Hmm.. I don't think that's.. a villian? I watched a tiny bit of Ice Age and from the part I see is that the sabre tiger helped the animals.
Fleur du mal June 16th, 2007, 9:48 am oh dear, now I have to admit that I never read Oliver Twist...
here's another one for my list - Mrs Coulter from His Dark Materials.
and on a slightly more nostalgic note - Top Dollar from The Crow. Loved the movie when I was sixteen. Seeing it again with twenty, I must admit that it was rather cheesy. It was re-run on tv a few weeks ago, and now it bore nothing but the patina of nostalgia.
oh, and Castor Troy from Face/Off, in both actors' performance, though I must say that I slightly preferred Nicolas Cage at the beginning. So arrogant. So megalomaniac. And these suits he's wearing!
Sephiran June 16th, 2007, 10:01 am Oliver Twist is truly worth reading. Bill Sikes is a great villian.
Man, Nicholas Cage is one WEIRD guy in real life.
The name of his second child, Kal-El, is also the birth name of Superman in the DC Comics universe. Nicolas said in a radio interview with Ryan Seacrest that he liked the name Kyle, but his wife wanted a more unique name. Cage is a long-time fan of comics and considers them to be the modern equivalent of mythology. He was once attached to play Superman in a film to be directed by Tim Burton.
Kal-El! The real name of Superman. My friend called Jeff told me this while we were talking about his weird selection of name which came up while we were talking about Superman..
"Imagine this scene, the teacher is marking the people who're absent. Jeff Andrews? Here. Bob Martian? Here. Kal-El Cage? Here."
He'd probably be the laughing stock of the school, no, the neighborhood. Poor guy, I'd scold my dad if I were him, when I got old enough to realise I had a stupid name..
Fleur du mal June 16th, 2007, 10:14 am I think if your daddy is Nicolas Cage, you're a bit safer than the rest of becoming the national laughing stock. Also, that kid might go to school with Romeo Beckham, and the kids of Bruce Willis and Demi Moore (I forgot their names, but they were odd)
Now here's a villain that might not be that well-known in the English-speaking world - Franz Moor from Schiller's The Robbers. Brilliant.
Sephiran June 16th, 2007, 10:24 am Willis and Moore had three daughters during their thirteen-year union: Rumer Glenn Willis (born 1988), Scout LaRue Willis (1991) and Tallulah Belle Willis (1994).
Rumer sounds like Rumor.. Scout.. hahahaha.. TALLULAH sounds like an arab name of a terrorist or something.
The favorite villian of all time to his kids, eh? Loves their daddy.. but a villian till the (his) end.
Fleur du mal June 16th, 2007, 10:42 am those were the names, yes! God knows what they were thinking to give their kids such weirdo names!
LovelyLadyBlack June 16th, 2007, 10:44 am Voldemort,The Joker,Lex Luther,Xemnas,and that's it:tu:
Lady_Galadriel June 16th, 2007, 5:05 pm I'm really partial to Darth Vader. I think he is the ultimate bad guy. Oh, and don't forget Sauron from LotR. He's the most evil of all villains ever!
Fleur du mal June 16th, 2007, 7:24 pm yeah, he's the epitome of evil. He just hasn't that much to actually say, has he?

Bellatrix Lestrange
Falllon June 15th, 2010, 11:16 pm Well, obviously Bellatrix. But in terms of non-Harry Potter related things, I'm going to go with Ursula the Sea Witch from The Little Mermaid. Yes, The Little Mermaid has been my favourite movie my entire life. I've always loved Ursula. She's the kind of villain where she's your favourite character, but still want the good guys to win. I also love Gaston from Beauty and the Beast. He's hysterical, and hunky!
APolaris June 16th, 2010, 12:11 am Here's my countdown.
5. I'm actually going with Snape for this one, due to his complexity and, in the end, ambiguous "was he ever really villainous?" status. Voldemort seems too non-threatening and impersonal to be a serious villain to me.
4. Kefka from Final Fantasy 6. A demented lunatic... clown? One of his "fun" activities consists of poisoning a river so that both his troops and the opposing army choke to death on it, then laughing manically about the whole affair. He also actually succeeds in taking over and demolishing most of the world.
3. Randall Flagg by Stephen King. A body of nearly infinite symbolism who stands for all of evil embodied in one being. Tom Cullen's quote about him in "The Stand" is possibly the greatest paragraph ever written about an evil being. In the end, though, like most villains in King's opinion, he turns out being a "bumhug."
2. Iago from Othello. The sheer lack of actual motive identifies him as pure malice. Moreover, he has the wittiest dialogue of any villain ever created, bar none.
1. Amon Goth in Schindler's List. The character was not at all exaggerated in the film - he really did things like abuse his servant-girl and snipe Jews from his villa. There's even a story that when one of the real Schindler Jews met Ralph Fiennes in his getup, her body instinctively began shaking because he reminded her so strongly of the real man.

Hysteria July 11th, 2011, 5:10 pm Hannibal Lector from Silence of the Lambs (didn't care for the other books) is my number one. No matter how many times I read the book or see the movie he still gives me the creeps.
And for something different, Orochimaru from Naruto. Just because he's so incredibly ****ed up
Nikkolas August 27th, 2011, 2:12 am Kuja from Final Fantasy IX.
Dmitri Yuriev from Xenosaga
Sensui from Yu Y Hakusho.
Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean
I tend to prefer villains with sad backgrounds. I honestly don't have a fixed favorite apart from Kuja. It's just whatever is on my mind at the moment.
jojoroony August 27th, 2011, 3:19 am GlaDos and Opal Koboi. GlaDos is so funny, I forget she's evil. and Opal Koboi, well, she just doesn't know when to give up? She put herself into a self-induced coma FOR A YEAR so she could kill Artemis Fowl's posse, not to mention CHANGED HER OWN SPECIES just so she could pretend to be a businessman's daughter.
She is one bold, brass, bladed mother f*@%er.
(a cookie to whoever gets those references.)

Sinistra_Furze August 28th, 2011, 8:57 pm First to mind, Count Fosco. A baaaaaad man.
PandoraTrilling August 29th, 2011, 5:50 pm Hannibal Lecter and Heath Ledger's Joker are great villains...creepy, creepy, CREEPY!
As for the HP characters, Dolores Umbridge is the best villain, hands down. Imelda Staunton did a brilliant job of portraying Umbridge in OotP. The kittenish smile, feigned manners and grandmotherly demeanor conceal an utterly ruthless, vicious and evil excuse for a human being. She's the villain in HP that I love to hate. I'd have loved to set her lines: "I must not torture children. I must not torture children. I must not torture children."
Bellatrix is a strong villain, too. She's barking mad. She has no conscience, no inner conflict and offers no apologies. Unfortunately for Harry and the Order, she is also a very, very powerful witch.
Voldemort strikes me as a sociopath. He has no concern for the welfare of his followers. He only cares about whether they have succeeded in carrying out his orders. Voldemort only cares about Voldemort: his glory, his immortality. No one can really get close to him because he doesn't feel the need for a personal connection to anyone.
