The one of the saddest songs for me in Bruno Coulais "In Memoriam a capella". I've heard it in one of my favest theatre plays "They shoot horses, don't they?", in the final scene. There was a large screen on theback scene, and when judge sentenced Robert to death, there were running beautiful horses on the screen. And this song... Amazing. Very beautiful and unbeliavable sad. I just sobbed.

Love Will Tear Us Apart by Joy Division is pretty depressing...

When the routine bites hard
And ambitions are low
And the resentment rides high
But emotions wont grow
And were changing our ways,
Taking different roads
Then love, love will tear us apart again

Why is the bedroom so cold
Turned away on your side?
Is my timing that flawed,
Our respect run so dry?
Yet theres still this appeal
That weve kept through our lives
Love, love will tear us apart again

Do you cry out in your sleep
All my failings expose?
Get a taste in my mouth
As desperation takes hold
Is it something so good
Just cant function no more?
When love, love will tear us apart again

I have quite a few that make me teary. Some os the lyric smean a lot cos I've split with my bf not long ago. Theres:

Paramore // Emergency
Cause' I've seen love die way too many times
When it deserved to be alive
I've seen you cry way too many times
When you deserved to be alive

Dashboard Confessional // Hands Down
Hands down, this is the best day I can ever remember
I'll always remember the sound of the stereo
The dim of the soft lights, the scent of your hair
That you twirled in your fingers
And the time on the clock when we realized it's so late
And this walk that we shared together
The streets were wet and the gate was locked
So I jumped it and I let you in
And you stood at your door with your hands on my waist
And you kissed me like you meant it
And I knew that you meant it
That you meant it, that you meant it
And I knew that you meant it, that you meant it

Lostprophets // Always All Ways [Apologies, Glances & Messed Up Chances]
I guess I'm trying to say I'm sorry,
But it always comes out wrong,
I think a part of you still loves me,
Even though we're moving on.

They make me cry :upset:

"Learn to be Lonely" from the Phantom of the Opera

"Into the West" by Annie Lennox

"My Way" by Frank Sinatra

And then of course like everyone else has said "Hurt" by Johnny Cash. It's such an incredible song and I think it's had a bigger impact than the origional version done by NIN.

Hands down the saddest song I've ever heard was The Cat Carol by Merin Cadell. It's a very sad Christmas song about a cat that sacrifices it's life to save a poor mouse that is stranded outside on the coldest day of winter, which also happens to be Christmas Eve. Santa comes and the reindeer cry, but Santa turns the cat into a very special Christmas Star. I tear up thinking about it.

"I'm so lonesome I could cry" by Hank Williams Sr.

The instrumental part and especially the lyrics:

Hear that lonesome whippoorwill
He sounds too blue to fly
The midnight train is whining low
I'm so lonesome I could cry

I've never seen a night so long
When time goes crawling by
The moon just went behind a cloud
To hide its face and cry

Did you ever see a robin weep
When leaves begin to die?
That means he's lost the will to live
I'm so lonesome I could cry

The silence of a falling star
Lights up a purple sky
And as I wonder where you are
I'm so lonesome I could cry

My top three are Whiskey Lullaby, These Arms of Mine (Otis Redding), and You Were Mine (Dixie Chicks).
This is the saddest line in any song anywhere:

So How Can I Tell Them You've Changed Your Mind"

has anyone ever heard the christmas song about the boy wanting to buy a nice pair of shoes for his mom because she is going to meet jesus tonight?
it brings tears to my eyes every time i hear it

I have heard this song, and it is so sad it is the definition of a sad song. They intentionally wrote to make people cry I think.
I just googled it, it's By Alabama -

It was almost Christmas time
There I stood in another line
Tryin to buy that last gift or two
Not really in the Christmas mood

Standin right in front of me
Was a little boy waiting anxiously
Pacing round like little boys do
And in his hands he held a pair of shoes

And his clothes were worn and old
He was dirty from head to toe
And when it came his time to pay
I couldnt believe what I heard him say

Sir, I wanna buy these shoes
For my mama, please
Its Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir?
Daddy says theres not much time
You see, shes been sick for quite a while
And I, know these shoes will make her smile
And I, want her to look beautiful
If mama meets Jesus tonight

He counted pennies for what seemed like years
And the, cashier said Son, theres not enough here.
He searched his pockets franticly
Then he turned and he looked at me
He said Mama made Christmas good at our house
Most years she just did without
Tell me, sir, what am I gonna do
Somehow Ive gotta buy her these Christmas shoes

So I laid the money down
I just had to help him out
And Ill never forget the look on his face
when he said Mamas gonna look so great

Sir, I wanna buy these shoes
For my mama, please
Its Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir?
Daddy says theres not much time
You see, shes been sick for quite a while
And I, know these shoes will make her smile
And I, want her to look beautiful
If mama meets Jesus tonight

I knew I caught a glimpse of heaven love
As he thanked me and ran out
I knew that god had sent that little boy to remind me
What Christmas is all about

Sir, I wanna buy these shoes
For my mama, please
Its Christmas eve and these shoes are just her size
Could you hurry, sir?
Daddy says theres not much time
You see, shes been sick for quite a while
And I, know these shoes will make her smile
And I, want her to look beautiful
If mama meets Jesus tonight

I want her to look beautiful
If mama meets Jesus tonight

I forget the name, but it is by Sawer Brown, and is about two sides of a war, stopping fighting for a few minutes during a battle on Christmas Eve to sing a x-mas sond together. Two soldiers, one from each side get up and exchange gifts. I think it is sad because it shows that your enemy is a man, fighting for something, just like you. But he is still human.

Supposedly, it is based off of a true story. I can't remember if it was about WWI ot the American Civil War. It has been so ling since I have heard it.

Guernica - Brand New (http://www.plyrics.com/lyrics/brandnew/guernica.html)
Named after the painting obv. It's about the singer's grandfather dying from lung cancer and him feeling so helpless to do anything about it. It gets to me every time, more so because my gran died from lung cancer 6 months ago and I know how he felt. I actually got to meet the singer briefly and it really made me feel better about the whole thing. First time I saw it sung live it just made me cry.

There are a lot of sad songs out there I admit, but none of them have really affected me s much as this one has or ever will.

It was only a link to the lyrics, although I probably should have specified that. I didn't want to make a big post causing the page to look all weird as there are quite a lot of lyrics.

There's a guy, called Dallas Green. He's got such a beautiful voice, and listening to his solo work often makes me feel quite sad, but if anybody else sang it it wouldn't be the same.

Boston, by Augustana is another song that makes me feel a touch melancholy.

1) "American Pie" by Don McLean -- this one has actually succeeded in making me cry (and not many songs, books, or movies are capable of accomplishing that) ...for those of you who didn't know, this song is about the "day the music died" (i.e. the day that Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper died in a plane crash just outside Clear Lake, Iowa), and how music changed in the 10 years following that day...

2) "Me and Bobby McGee" by Janis Joplin (Freedom's just another word for nothing left to lose. Nothing. And that's all my Bobby left me!) ...trivia: Janis Joplin is alluded to in one of the verses of "American Pie" (I met a girl who sang the blues/ And asked her for some happy news,/ But she just smiled and turned away.)

3) "Who Wants to Live Forever" by Queen (used in both the original Highlander movie and the TV series)

Sorry if this has been mentioned, but there is this song called The Scientist by Coldplay that breaks my heart, mainly because someone used for a Ron/Hermione fanvid on YouTube :(

But other than that, pretty much any Staind song.

OMG I choked up reading about it. Gah, I have to find that song.

...Why am I so mean to myself?

Hrm, anyway, the one that stands out for me is "Missing" by Evanescence. So achingly beautiful, I can never listen to it right the way through.

Green Day - Wake Me Up When September Ends (The song isn't that sad, but if you watch it with the music video it is...)

Simple Plan - Untitled (How Could This Happen To Me?) ((Omg, that has got to be one of the saddest songs I've ever heard...))

Mariah Carey - Hero (Again, reminds me of people I've lost... The tempo and lyrics are sad, and make me think of people that are lost...)

Snow Patrol - Run (No comment. This is one of the saddest songs... EVER. (Yet very good))

Coldplay - See You Soon (This better make you cry... If it doesn't... Nothing will...)

~~

Um yeah, those are the saddest songs I've heard of...

Mes, Ves, y Sufres, by Hope of the States. It's a soft song in itself, but the minute that man starts to croon his lyrics, my tear ducts have no hope. He's done something wrong, he knows it. It's become so normal for him to screw things up that to try to do things right for once would be futile... Then he gets more confident in his wrongness, the chords get louder and progress, until it's just sadness, but beautiful, achingly sadness. The instrumentals are gorgeous, the singer knows when to back off and let them do their thing, but also knows when he should step in and sing the saddest words ever written. It's making me shiver just thinking about it.

Another Sad Song I've heard of is I Walk The Line-Johnny Cash

I don't think this song is sad at all. Did you listen to the words? Maybe it's just the sound of that seems sad to you, which is understandable. His song "Hurt" is really sad.

One song that makes me sad (it's a song I can't stand, by the way) is "Cat's In the Cradle". It's about a little boy who idolizes his dad and always wants to spend time with him, but the dad is always too busy, over and over. The little boy wants to grow up to be just like his dad. Then when he does grow up, the dad wants to spend time together, but the son is too busy. It's awful, it's so sad!

When my ex and I were breaking-up, we both happened to hear a song by the group October Project called Ariel, which seemed to perfectly describe us and what we were going through together. Neither of us could hear it without breaking down, for the longest time.

A couple of examples:

The verse that goes "Let the wind and ocean water wash across your hands, wash away a thousand footsteps, wash us all away like sand" was significant 'cuz one of our favorite activities was to take long (miles long!) walks along the shore.

The verse that goes "My name is Ariel And I want to be free, it is your sorrow that has made a slave of me" so reminded us word-for-word of how he felt when he initiated the break-up and then decided to try and stay for a while due to my misery.

Luckily it ended amicably and we're still friends to this day.

The most sad song I've ever heard is Hurt by Johnny Cash. It touches the heart and the mere fact that he died shortly after recording to it adds to its meaning and the way it effects you.

Many songs upset me and yet I feel like they are possibly the most beautiful. They effect you and that's what is wonderful about music.

The Cat Carol
The cat wanted in to the warm warm house,
but no one would let the cat in
It was cold outside on Christmas Eve,
She meowed and meowed by the door.

The cat was not let in the warm warm house,
And her tiny cries were ignored.
'twas a blizzard now, the worst of the year,
There was no place for her to hide.

Just then a poor little mouse crept by,
He had lost his way in the snow.
He was on his last legs and was almost froze,
The cat lifted him with her paw.

She said "Poor mouse do not be afraid,
because this is Christmas Eve.
"On this freezing night we both need a friend,
"I won’t hurt you - stay by my side."

She dug a small hole in an icy drift,
This is where they would spent the night.
She curled herself 'round her helpless friend,
Protecting him from the cold.

Oooooo

When Santa came by near the end of the night,
the reindeer started to cry.
They found the cat lying there in the snow,
and they could see that she had died.

They lifted her up from the frozen ground,
and placed her into the sleigh.
It was then they saw the little mouse wrapped up,
she had kept him warm in her fur.

"Oh thank you Santa for finding us!
"Dear cat wake up we are saved!"
..."I’m sorry mouse but your friend has died,
there’s nothing more we can do.

"On Christmas Eve she gave you her life,
the greatest gift of them all."
Santa lifted her up into the night sky,
and laid her to rest among the stars.

"Dear mouse don’t cry you are not alone,
you will see your friend every year.
"Each Christmas a Cat Constellation will shine,
to remind us that her love’s still here."

Oooooooo

Ok now I'm crying from just reading the lyrics...

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton...thats sad...

Tears in Heaven

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven

Would you hold my hand
If I saw you in heaven
Would you help me stand
If I saw you in heaven
I'll find my way, through night and day
Cause I know I just can't stay
Here in heaven

Time can bring you down
Time can bend your knee
Time can break your heart
Have you begging please
Begging please

(instrumental)

Beyond the door
There's peace I'm sure.
And I know there'll be no more...
Tears in heaven

Would you know my name
If I saw you in heaven
Will it be the same
If I saw you in heaven
I must be strong, and carry on
Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven

Cause I know I don't belong
Here in heaven

Okay this is the second time i've changed my mind here but oh well. The saddest song i've ever heard is 'Cancer - My chemical romance' it's so sad and meaningful because gerard way had someone die of cancer that he was close to, that's why he died his hair white because this person was affacted like that from the chemo. And it's a song for everyone else who've had cancer affect their friends and family, one of those people is me, so it's just a very deep song.

I like all genres, but one not mentioned here is rap. I know it's not very popular on this board but there still is sad songs with veryy sad lyrics..if you can see past the whole mainstream stuff thats out there now.

first song that comes to mind is - chamillionaire - void in my life .. it's a really deep song, the lyrics are amazing, this is just the chorus

When I look back on my life I realize,
realize somethin ain't right
I'm missing you...lord
In my life
Make it right

I got somethin to decide,
Just wanna make everything right,
Cuz theres a hugee void
Huge void in my life

doesn't sound like much, but with the music too..plus it's just the chorus lol..and it means a lot to me too..

Slightly off topic here, but does anyone know of any sad piano pieces, or even brass/sax/strings/guitar..cuz I'm a music producer and I like to sample (using music to make new music) and I'm having trouble finding anything. If you could help me I would appreciate it..thank you.

Wow. Just one? There are so many sad songs.

Hurt, by Johnny Cash.

What Hurts the Most, by Rascal Flatts.

And my school put on the play "Playing for Time" by Arthur Miller last year, and at the end the main character sings the French national anthem. Its not really a sad song but no one in that theater walked out without a couple tears rolling down their cheek. I think it was more of the context than the actual song.

"Deep and Meaningless" by Rooster

I cried the first time i heard that song.. The words really touched me. I felt like as if it was written for me.. Or based on my past.. That song describes me exactly...

~I, I dont know why i miss you so much
Yeah I, I dont know why I still feel your touch
You, you left me feeling high and dry
With nothing, nothing but the question why

Yeah you, I guess you had another direction
And leaving me with nothing but a dead connection

[Chorus:]
If you call me today
Ill say that Im fine
But I bet you can tell by the tone of my voice
Its just a lie
You knew what you had
You still walked away leaving me in this mess
My love for you is deep and meaningless

You, you knew what you were doing to me
And I, I guess I was too blind to see
Well you hit where it hurt and you fooled me so bad
But I'd do it again to relive what we had
(Damn thats sad)

There are many things left to remind me
Of a love that I just cant leave behind me~

England's not the mythical land of madame george and roses
It's the home of police who kill black boys on mopeds
And i love my boy and that's why i'm leaving
I don't want him to be aware that there's
Any such thing as grieving

goodness knows the wicked die alone
it just shows when you're wicked you're left only

Eternal Snow by Myco. Japanese, though, so you probably won't understand. xD But the lyrics are incredibly sad, especially considering it was from an incredibly sad animé!

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton pretty much makes me want to jump off a tall building, which, of course, is kind of creepy since he wrote the song after his son died by falling off a tall building.

also, anything by Leonard Cohen. Love him, but it makes you want to reach for those razor blades and that Walther ppk. that song Hallelujah (they played it in Shrek) is soooo sad.

Working Class Hero by John Lennon

"When they've tortured and scared you for twenty odd years,
Then they expect you to pick a career,
When you can't really function you're so full of fear,
There's room at the top they are telling you still,
But first you must learn how to smile as you kill,
If you want to be like the folks on the hill, "

Dying Sailor to His Shipmates by Bono

"Oh, wrap me in my country’s flag, and lay me in the cold blue sea
Let the roaring of the waves, my solemn requiem be
And I shall sleep a pleasant sleep, while storms above their vigils keep"

I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry by Johnny Cash

"Did you ever see a Robin weep,
When leaves begin to die?
That means he's lost his will to live."

Going for Gold by Bright Eyes

"there's a film on the wall
makes the people look small
who are sitting beside it
all consumed in the drama
they must return to their lives
once the hero has died
they will drive to the office
stopping somewhere for coffee
where the folk singers, poets, and playwrights convene
dispinsing their wisdom
oh dear amateur orators
they will detail their pain
in some standard refrain
that will recite their sadness
like it's some kind of contest
well if it is
I think I am winning it
all beaming with confidence
as I make my final lap
the gold medal gleams
so hang it around my neck
cause I am deserving it
the champion of idiots

but a kid carries his Walkman on that long bus ride to omaha
I know a girl who cries when she practices violin
cause each note sounds so pure
it just cuts into her
and then the melody comes pouring out her eyes
and now to me everything else
just sounds like a lie."

The first song I thought of when I saw this thread was Eric Clapton's "Tears in Heaven", and I was amazed at how long it took for it to appear here. As someone said, he wrote it to express his grief after his four-year-old son fell out of a 53-story window. A tragic accident.
The second song I thought of was REM's "Everybody Hurts". I don't think a person can hear it and not feel sad.
My Sarah McLachlan song that makes me cry is her version of "Prayer of St. Francis", though I think her song "Time" is sadder by far when you consider the words and sentiment behind them.

Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton

I bawl my eyes out every time I hear this song. It was played during my friend's mom's funeral when I was 9...I couldn't stop crying, my dad had to hold me up. Everytime I hear it I go right back to that moment.

Alyssa Lies by Jason Michael Carroll always makes me cry...
My little girl met a new friend,
just the other day,
on the playground at school
between the tires and the swings

But she came home with tear-filled eyes,
and she said to me "Daddy, Alyssa lies"

Well I just brushed it off at first,
'cause I didn't know how much my little girl had been hurt
or the things she had seen.
I wasn't ready when I said "You can tell me"

and she said...

"Alyssa lies to the classroom,
Alyssa lies everyday at school,
Alyssa lies to the teachers
as she tries to cover every bruise"

My little girl laid her head down that night to go to sleep.
As I stepped out the room, I heard her say a prayer so soft and sweet
"God bless my mom and my Dad
and my new friend, Alyssa
*oh*I know she needs you bad

Because Alyssa lies to the classroom,
Alyssa lies everyday at school,
Alyssa lies to the teachers
as she tries to cover every bruise"

(bridge)

I had the worst night of sleep in years
as I tried to think of a way to calm her fears
I knew just what it was I had to do *I knew exactly what I had to do*
but when we got to school on Monday I heard the news

My little girl asked me why everybody looked so sad
the lump in my throat grew bigger
with every question that she asked.
Until I felt the tears run down my face
and I told her that Alyssa wouldn't be at school today

'Cause she doesn't lie in the classroom
she doesn't lie anymore at school
Alyssa lies with Jesus
because there's nothin' anyone would do

The whole song is just heartbreaking.

Also, The Christmas Shoes by Newsong makes me cry, too. Sad that some kids have to go through such horrible things at such a young age.

I believe by Diamond Rio makes me depressed...no idea if they meant for the song to be so sad...
