Odd, to start a Society when so few members of the wizarding community are Squibs. :p

Not odd at all! By starting a society, she is helping others find people just like them. Haven't you seen that in real life? Like the MS society, or Alcoholics Anonymous? It's like a support group!

Yes it has certainly filled up since september when we had our first update of the never asked question. This question has been asked before as I remember when HBP was released and that was asked then. The reply was related to Horcruxes as that time. This new one may relate somehow to Book 7.

Odd, to start a Society when so few members of the wizarding community are Squibs. :p

Hermione tried to start a society nobody is interested in, not even the persons she is going to help. And this didn`t stop her. As others have said, if nobody starts a society, many important work would undone today. Little things can change the world, you only have to try.

I must say that I didn't doubt. I always thought she would do some update, but I also thought that she was being busy with family and book 7 and travelling and stuff.

But what I REALLY want to know are the WOMBAT correct answers, to all the editions. Nicole said that there haven't been answers to the first one, so I would REALLY hope that she gives us the correct answers after the last WOMBAT, or after book 7.

That's a rather "Slytheriny" acronym for the "Society for the Support of Squibs."
Considering the Slytherins descendents' opinion on Squibs, I don't think that the Support of Squibs is part of their major goals. ;) Besides, the Hat says that Slytherins are more concerned about Pure Blood Wizard status. I guess that Squibs are pretty low on their respect skala. Not all of course, but generally.

It sounds more like a Hufflepuff thing:
Said Hufflepuff, "I'll teach the lot
And treat them just the same."

Actually I wonder what the goals of this society are? Better education for Squibs? Help for finding decent Jobs? Special maps and security advises, in order to make it easier for them to walk around wizarding world? Integration programs in muggle world?

silver ink pot
October 3rd, 2006, 12:55 pm
I'm not sure what's so Hufflepuff about the initials "S.S.S." - I was just commenting on the hissing sound of the name - more associated with Slytherin.

However, I agree that the Society would probably be helping Squibs to cope with life in the Muggle world, since they wouldn't know what to do otherwise.

It looks like Idris is holding a can for money donations - sort of like the Salvation Army. :) I suppose Squibs are the most needy people of the Wizarding World, which is why JKR told us to have "pity" for Filch, the janitor.

I just took your initial comment on the similarity of sound and took it further trying to make a comparision to the characteristics of the houses. :)

I suppose Squibs are the most needy people of the Wizarding World, which is why JKR told us to have "pity" for Filch, the janitor. That's possible. I wonder who would actually give money there, as the richest families we have seen so far are more the pure blood maniacs (Blacks, Malfoys). Maybe families like the Potters would have given some donation :)

hmm this is getting sort of off topic...but I actually mentioned this aspect also in the Discrimination thread (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=92616) (shameless promotion  ) :)

Here is a page with some of the meanings of the name "Idris" ~ Thanks to Aluna for the link:

http://www-static.cc.gatech.edu/~idris/Personal_Info/Idris_origin.htm

Also this: The association with Cader Idris, a mountain in Wales, and King Arthur:

http://www.legendofkingarthur.co.uk/wales/cader-idris.htm

Cader Idris,a mountain almost 3,000 feet in height sits in the midst of the Welsh countryside.

Local folklore claims that the mountain is haunted, and that anyone who spends the night on top of Cader Idris will wake up either a mad or a poet. One of the earliest legends says that the giant Idris lived there. Three large stones rest at the foot of the mountain, and that Idris got angry once and kicked them down the mountain.

Other Welsh legends say that Arthur made his kingdom there, hence the name Cader Idris: or the Seat of Arthur. No one really knows exactly how Cader Idris fits with Arthurian legends.

Also, the name is a Pun: IDRIS OAKBY = OAK BY IDRIS

The Welsh Mountain Cader Idris is surrounded by ancient oaks:

http://www.stayinginwales.com/attrac/microsite.asp?unique_id=1140

A magnificent mountain towering over the spectacular Mawddach estuary. The area contains some of the most dramatic scenery in Wales. The area is of outstanding geomorphological importance including features such as the extensive Talyllyn fault, several corries and narrow summit ridges. There is a range of plant communities, grasslands prevailing but with much Bilberry heath and areas of montane moss heath. Well developed acidic soligenous mires, blanket mire and on lower ground remnants of Sessile Oak woodland all occur
.

Cool - that didn't pop up on Google until I added the words "soft drinks" to "Idris." Do you have any idea what connection that would have to this Witch of the Month?

http://bestbritishfoods.com/cw2/assets/product_thumb/DSCN5468.jpg

EDIT: Mundungus: I answered my own question:

Thomas Howell Williams (Idris) ~ Chemist
http://www.open.ac.uk/ou5/Arts/chemists/person.cfm?SearchID=7502

1873 - 1925
Manufacturer, Idris Co Ltd (Mineral Waters)

http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache:r6Aaz3VYNbEJ:www.guardian.co.uk/country/article/0,,1870105,00.html+idris+mineral+waters+company&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=13&ie=UTF-8

Thomas Howell Williams (1842-1925), the Liberal MP who so loved the mountain that he changed his name to Idris.
Williams was already using the name for the family's mineral water business ("I drink Idris 'cos I's dri") when he stood unsuccessfully for Denbigh in 1892 as plain Thomas Howell Williams, giving his Welsh address as Dolycae, Cader Idris, Corris, Merionethshire. By the time he stood for the safe seat of Flint he had assumed the name of Idris in addition to Williams - and it worked. He was duly elected in the Liberal landslide of 1906 whose centenary is also being marked this year.

As THW Idris he had a successful career in London local politics as a progressive member of the London county council, and as a councillor, alderman and mayor of the new metropolitan borough of St Pancras, serving alongside George Bernard Shaw (councillor 1900-03) and then alongside his own son (councillor 1903-06).
His most memorable achievement was securing funds from Andrew Carnegie for the St Pancras public libraries in the teeth of fierce opposition from local ratepayers.

Well, as Hermione says in Order of the Phoenix, one sure way of getting something read is to ban it!
I liked that quote she put on her website from Ralph Waldo Emerson:

"Every burned book enlightens the world."

I don't think a Squib could do magic late in life. I think that might be someone who gave up magic, the way Merope did - but who knows? :)

There are even Squibs on the House of Black family tree:

HP Lexicon House of Black (http://www.hp-lexicon.org/wizards/blackfamilytree.html)

Marius, grandson of Phineas Nigellus, was a Squib. And Phinea's namesake - his son Phineas - though not a Squib, supported Muggle Rights - and was removed from the Family Tree.

It's easy to see why someone would feel pity for Squibs and want to help them. They might have a family member who was "disadvantaged" in the Wizarding World due to Squib status. Also, because some Squibs probably choose to live with Muggles, they are cut off from their families - especially in Pureblood families.

I am still hoping for a title on Halloween. I would love it if you go to get your wombat scores and the title flashes on the screen instead. I will be so excited to get the title that the whole neighborhood will hear me scream.

I guess I missed W.O.M.B.A.T. Grade two as well as Grade 1 and all the other door openings. O well i guess my life does not revolve around the internet and Harry Potter. I am not happy I missed the W.O.M.B.A.T. again.

How long has the weasley wizard whezzers form been on the desk?
You can see it as the page loads, before all the stuff appears on the desk.

There's also a slug club list, and another piece of paper with Harry, Dumbeldore and Tom Riddles names on it.

Plus in the rubbish bin there is a scrap of paper that says harry, someone, is dead. Where do you reckon this has come from?

(Sorry if this stuff has already been discussed)

The Fred and George page is old, I saw it many times before. For the Slug Club I`m not sure. The Scrap in the Rubbish Bin also isn`t new.
I don`t expect anything new before Halloween, except for the Wombat results. We had three particularly minor updates last month.

Do you know where they will appear ? I missed the first WOMBAT...

You have to click at the Wombat-Card bottom at the desk, than write your Student-Code in the bigger card on the next side. Then you see, that the results are in the Post, but not delivered. This meens, that the owls need a day or two to present your result.

As I seem to recall - and I may be wrong, of course - the last Wombat results arrived on Friday. I seem to remember that because my computer was on the blink and I had to use an unfamiliar computer to get my grade, and I was terrified that without the proper computer "cookie" it wouldn't work. But it worked fine. All I needed was the code. :)

As I seem to recall - and I may be wrong, of course - the last Wombat results arrived on Friday. You're correct, SIP, though it is dependent on where one lives whether it was Friday or Saturday for results being available! Going back through the version of this thread for that time period (I think it was v8, but maybe v9; I checked last week when the test became available), people were getting results a few minutes before midnight GMT (or was it BST at the time?) on Friday. The clock seems to be moving through its progression in the same time frame as Grade 1, so it does seem like we might get our results tomorrow--though they may become available in the wee hours for some. :)

I'm pretty sure it was midnight British time, because I distinctly remember staying up till 2 and typing like mad on this thread (and instilling false hope in other members about getting the book 7 title along with the W.O.M.B.A.T results;)). The results came out exactly at 2 am here, which was 12 am in Britain, so I'm expecting something similar this time as well.

ETA: Wombat results now in the post!:tu:

Please owl me if you can...I'm trying to make a graphic and I lost my code for the first time...

I got Exceeds Expectations too. I'm happy with that, especially since I didn't take the last test.

To those who did the last one, was this one harder?

And is this all that happens? No exciting tidbits of news?

And do you reckon the third WOMBAT will give us the title of the book? :D

I'll just quote my question again and see if it can't get an answer....

Ok, next question, I've noticed some of you have copied the image into your sigs. How did you do that?

Ok, next question, I've noticed some of you have copied the image into your sigs. How did you do that?Several ways:
It's easy. Go to the page with the open Wombat result.

On your keyboard press ALT + Print Screen/SysRq. Open Paint, select Edit, click Paste. A screencap of that page will appear. Simply crop it down, and save it.

Well, you can print the certificate. What I did to get in my signature was press the 'Print Screen' button on my keyboard ( which copies the whole screen) and then pasted it into Paint, and edited it so I only had this bit .

Yeah, I'm still curious: How come my computer still has the "Do Not Disturb" sign off and I haven't seen any sign or how to get my WOMBAT results as there isn't a WOMBAT card on the desk page! Any ideas? Thanks!

Try hitting the refresh button when viewing the page or emptying your cookies folder...

emptying your cookies folder...

That won't work because all those stuff are stored as flash files so you see clearing the cookies won't help.

I suggest you use CCleaner (http://www.ccleaner.com/) it help delete flash files.

A third test, ouch. I managed an Exceeds Expectation on this one and some lucky guess work but the next test will be very difficult indeed.

Hi, I had this problem before, but someone said I should wait until the results are acctually out.
I carefully wrote down my ID number. When I enter it into the card, I cannot access the results. It says that my number isn't recognized. Last time I checked, my sister had the exact same problem. I do know it is case sensetive, and I wrote it down as such.
If anyone could help, I would be most grateful.

Well it definitely looks like there will be a third test. Yeah!! So far I have 2 Exceeds Expectations. Hopefully I can get Outstanding on the last one, but I am sure it will be much harder.

I should have written my answers down. After the first discussions here I really got the feeling my answers have been a little bit odd, but I got an Outstanding. Seems JKL likes the fighters for all groups of beings right now. :D

I had the same problem with the first wombat so I wrote myself a note to remind me which one was o and which one was zero.

Oh well, I improved. I got "Acceptable" last time and I got "Exceeds Expectations" this time. Oooh, there's gonna be a third one too... now THAT'S gonna be hard.... I better get studying.

Oh, I have trouble deciphering the identification codes too, so I just copy mine and save 'em to a word document and then I just paste them later, that way I don't need to re-type it.
