I have tried absolutely everything, O's and 0's and 9's and q's...even thought maybe I'd written v when it should have been r - but nothing works, even combinations with all of those variations.

Oh well. Got hubby working on it for me, he's more patient and is happier with number combinations.

Just as a bit of advice: for the next WOMBAT, copy and save the code in Notepad and make about 2 or 3 copies of the file. Then, when you need to enter the code, you can just copy and paste it on the WOMBAT card. You can also write it down as a precautionary measure, of course.;)

And I hope we'll get the third W.O.M.B.A.T. in December (as I'm hoping that our reward will be the release date) but I'm not holding my breath as we had to wait for six months to get Grade 2. :sigh:

In the other letters from the first W.O.M.B.A.T./JKs, JK never made reference to 'months'. But in this one, on one certificate, she does say 'a few months'. Whether that really means "a few months"---or 6+ months---only JK knows.

W.O.M.B.A.T. 1: We look forward to challenging you to a further and more difficult examination in due course.
We hope that you will attempt our next, and more difficult, examination in due course.
We hope that you will continue to study further and attempt W.O.M.B.A.T. Grade 2 in due course.
Another examination will present itself in due course, should you wish to try again.
Should you wish to try again, a grade 2 W.O.M.B.A.T. will present itself in due course.

JK's site: *In case you missed it, the W.O.M.B.A.T. test was revealed when the 'Do Not Disturb' door last opened. Another (more advanced) W.O.M.B.A.T. will appear in due course.

W.O.M.B.A.T. 2
We would most earnestly recommend that you proceed to the third, and final, W.O.M.B.A.T. in due course.
We hope very much that you will pursue your studies, culminating in the third and final W.O.M.B.A.T. in a few months' time.
You are evidently a witch or wizard of skill and learning and we hope that you will continue your studies and attempt the third, and final, W.O.M.B.A.T. when examination time comes again.

That's what I'm thinking as well. The comment for grade 1 was that grade 2 would be availabel "in due course". I think Jo did that because she was still in the middle of writing at that point and wasn't sure when she would be able to get to grade 2.

Now, she is finished writing and is editing - she has a better idea of the time frame and the comment for grade 2 is that grade 3 will be available in "a few months".

So I think we're definitely looking at December. :D

Imagine the final question on the third WOMBATs test, "What is the title of the next Harry Potter novel?" and the answer lies within the multiple choice.

I personally rather have a release date announcement, It's kind of weird but the title of the book really doesn't interest me nearly as much as wanting to know when Ill be able to read it.

I could go without the title and it wouldn't bother me, but that's because the title really won't do anything other then to cause questions, unless it's a title that answers previous ones, in a way.

I agree, the title won't be obvious so it will just lead to loads of speculation...or otherwise it will be really obvious with nothing to discuss, but to know when the book will finally come out will give us all something to aim towards.

"A few months" could mean anything from two to six months, but not longer than that.

Literally a "few" means "not many, small in number" (Oxford Dictionary) so hopefully that means less than 6 months. Given how a lot of us are hoping for a July release, 6 months takes us very close to that.

I dunno. I would take it to mean that they were getting all the kinks worked out the first time, and knew what they were doing this go-round. There were plenty of times in school when my teachers would give my class some sort of unique project, give us a deadline set a month or two away, and they'd tell us, "You're just the guinea pigs, let's see how this works." They'd ask us for feedback after everything was over with, and then work out all the problems they could, and give us the same kind of project with a different subject and a much shorter deadline (like two weeks).

It's basically the same idea, right? Hand out the test, work out all the little problems over a fairly long period of time, give results, and then hand out the improved version/system.

I haven't been around for a while and checked her website on the off chance that something might have happened and i was glad to see that the 2nd WOMBAT was up and that this time i managed to get a chance of doing it.
I got Exceeds Expectations, which i think is quite good considering i guessed the majority of the answers lol.

Just wondering if there have been any other updates besides the new WOMBAT?

There have been quite a few, but I'm not sure of all of them- sorry. Try the linkin Nicole's sig ( the FAQ), or wait for someone cleverer than me ;).

Joanne Rowling has updated her site once again.

Section: Fan Sites
Potterish.com

I've had a few fan letters from South America mentioning this fansite, so I thought I'd pay it a visit. Now I've done so, I understand why this site draws loyal fans. I love the distinctive, woodcut-style graphics and I was particularly touched by the fact that Harry was almost level with Ron and Hermione a close second in the 'favourite character poll'. At least they appreciate my hero over at Potterish. I was also grateful to note that they told their visitors to take the 'news' that I've written 750 pages of book seven with a pinch of salt. Thanks, Potterish: have a Fansite Award in appreciation of your style, your Potter-expertise and your responsible reporting.

I know we're all speculating what the reward for completing the third WOMBAT is going to be, but I highly doubt it will be the title for the last book or the release date.

Why do I say this? Well, not everyone does the WOMBATs and I'm sure Jo would not wish her title to be "passed on" in this way. I think she will reward us for simply going onto her site at the right time and letting us through that mysterious door.

Then the press will go wild.

Can anyone tell me what she did last halloween?Yes, she did "nothing" in 2005. But the previous year:
3) 31 October 2004 the door opened for the 3rd time, and Jo revealed the names of three chapters from HBP, which were:

Chapter Two: Spinners End
Chapter Six: Draco's Detour
Chapter Fourteen: Felix Felicis

The instructions below explain how the door was opened for the third time:
a) Go to the Room of Requirement and wait a few moments for Peeves to knock over the vase which will reveal several keys.
b) Try each key by dragging it in front of the keyhole until you find the one that opens the door.
c) When you choose the correct key, the rest will disappear and clicking on the doorknob will open up the door.
d) Open the drawer that you see and get the magnifying glass, then put it over the brown book.
e) This will reveal a puzzle. The answer to the puzzle is "chapters".
f) That's it! The titles of 3 chapters in Half Blood Prince appear and you now have Jo's latest surprise!
The door closed 15 November 2004.

Well not everyone takes the tests and that's true, but not everyone go to her website and/or open the door of R.O.R. either. Yet she used her website and the door to tell us the title of HBP and that she had finished it.
No matter if all her fans take the tests or not, the world will know right away when she tells us, no matter how she tells us. The media keeps an close eye to her website too, every diary, news and rubbish bin update she does are printed in the papers here in Iceland for an example.
And I think she loves giving us the excitement of going to her site, cracking all the clues, taking those exams and then give us rewards. The site makes her probably feel more connected to us and vice versa. I personally hope we will get the title or the announcement that she has finished the last book, as a reward after the last W.O.M.B.A.T. and I would much rather get to know those things through her website than from her or her publishers in a press conference.

Edit to say: I really hope Jo will give us the title on Halloween and announce she has finished book 7 after the third and final W.O.M.b.A.T.! :)

Also, I never heard of the title that she did debunk, so I got to thinking that maybe she debunked the actual name of the title right under our noses. This is unlikely but to put it right there for us to see wouldn't surprise me.

As for Jo not putting anything on her site last Halloween, well I don't know what she could have, she didn't have a book in the works at the time so I can't see what possible information she could have released. There (http://www.cosforums.com/showthread.php?t=89345&page=34) is a thread for the titles. The number of letters in your title are already near the right, the six books all have between 38 and 41 letters, the only exception is GoF with 35 letters.

HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPHER`S STONE
HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS
HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN
HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE
HARRY POTTER AND THE ORDER OF THE PHOENIX
HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE

I also noticed the fact that she has not debunked "Secret of Godric" yet... That's interesting but from what we know of Jo, she wouldn't think of the numbers at all. I think the number of syllables and the rhythm of the title would be more important factors in picking a title.

I don`t think so. We read since the third book Hermione mentioning her Arithmantik lessons, IMHO they will have their time. And JO invented symbols for Numerology, used on her website. Therefore I think thats not impossible, that she keeps in mind the number of letters in the titles.
The spread of the numbers of syllables is much greater than the one of the letters, thence I don`t believe she`ll using this to find a title.

Yeah that theme park idea sounded pretty weird to me, especially from Disney. I think it goes to show that we should only believe things that Jo tells us directly. Everything else we take with a pinch of salt. It is one the reasons I am so glad Jo has her website.

Same here. Without the website, the whole fandom would pretty much be in dismay about every theory anyone's ever brought up:p

You get a student ID after you take the WOMBAT. However, the latest WOMBAT has already come and gone. There will be another one up in due time. :)

When you hear the Do-not-Disturb-Sign is gone, use the eraser an enter the room. There you will find a test and at the end you will get a student ID. But you have to wait for the next W.O.M.B.A.T. because this is gone.

True, but HBP was still a work-in-progress at that point. She wasn't actively working on book 7 in October 2005 - she didn't "offcially" start writing until January 2006. Since she is working on book 7 now, we could get something on Halloween. :)

(For WOMBAT Grade 1, I got an A and was really disappointed, but I still hadn't read all of the HP books when I took the Grade 1 test... so there were things in there I had no clue about) I think reading everyone's theories on these forums really helped with taking this WOMBAT too... :) I bet a lot of the frequent posters did really well.

OCTOBER 31ST, 2006… What Will JKR Reveal On Her Site?

So, it’s that time of year again, when wizards and witches alike have a ball of a time, when the spiritual world can make contact with the physical world and when magic is most potent.

Will we be informed that she has finished writing and be given a preliminary date?
Or am I just being greedy and thinking too far ahead?

Will we get what we’re waiting for, the news that she has finished writing Book 7?
Still being greedy?

What about, a paragraph from the first chapter?
That’s not too bad?

OK, how about the TITLE of the book?
Just the title, please?

Or will she give us something we don’t know the meaning to, which gets our minds boggling but, is significant to the plot?
Well that’s just teasing isn’t it? Plain teasing.

The question is will JKR let us have a piece of pumpkin pie? Is the toffee apple a good or bad apple? Will it be trick or treat? Will our Jack-o’-lanterns be lit with thoughts? Or will we be kept guessing?...

Please JKR give us something, anything, but something...

Nicole

Will we be informed that she has finished writing and be given a preliminary date? I don't think so. I think she will save that for Christmas.
What about, a paragraph from the first chapter?Really, really doubtful.
OK, how about the TITLE of the book?It would be nice, but not sure she has chosen between the two ideas she mentioned earlier this year. She may want to debate the merits with her editors and that may not happen until she turns the manuscript over to the publishers. A few chapter titles might be more likely to be revealed.
Or will she give us something we don’t know the meaning to, which gets our minds boggling but, is significant to the plot?A new FAQ poll would be very welcome! :)

It`s too early for that, maybe we have a good chance for that as a christmas gift again.

OK, how about the TITLE of the book?
Just the title, please?

I think we won`t get the title until next year, because it`s the last book. Maybe it gives to much away if we have many time to discuss.

Or will she give us something we don’t know the meaning to, which gets our minds boggling but, is significant to the plot?

I doubt we`ll get anything significant to the plot. While waiting for HBP she gave us the description of Scrimgeour, he wasn`t significant.
But anything we will get is nice, personally I would prefer a new poll, which means later this year we have another answer to an interesting question.

meesha1971
October 25th, 2006, 3:13 pm
Yes, she did. David was born in March 2003 and OotP was released in June 2003. Mackenzie was born in January 2005 and the HBP was released in July 2005. Therefore nothing so far points out at a release date later than 2007.

Exactly. The first four books were published one year apart. Then there was a three-year gap between GOF and OOTP. There was a two-year gap between OOTP and HBP.

PS/SS – June 1997
COS – July 1998
POA – July 1999
GOF – July 2000
OOTP – June 2003
HBP – July 2005

Jo basically went straight from finishing one into writing the next. With GOF, she actually started it while she was finishing POA so there was some overlap. Because of that exhausting pace, she got burnt out. She took a long break between GOF and OOTP – and, really, she had earned it hadn’t she? Can’t fault her a bit for that. And she took a break between finishing OOTP and beginning HBP – not quite as long though.

Jo has never really sat down with anyone and said “this is how long it takes”. However, she has given us enough information to make a good estimate – and we can also use HBP as a guide because we know when she started writing and when she finished – which tells us how long the publishing process takes because we have the two dates for comparison.

Using that as a guide – along with Jo’s comments regarding the other books – we can make a fairly accurate estimate. It takes her an average of 10 – 12 months to write one book – that is including the editing process. And really, that was for the longer books – GOF and OOTP. COS and POA didn’t take that long.

For book 7, she took her year off – she didn’t really write in 2005. Although she did do a bit of work on the book, she didn’t technically sit down and start writing until January of 2006. Given her past timeline – I would say that she has finished the first draft and is now in the editing process.

Will we be informed that she has finished writing and be given a preliminary date?
Or am I just being greedy and thinking too far ahead?

Will we get what we’re waiting for, the news that she has finished writing Book 7?
Still being greedy?

I think she will announce that in December - like she did with HBP.

What about, a paragraph from the first chapter?
That’s not too bad?

I doubt she would reveal a whole paragraph. She did give us the opening line for OOTP – and one line from near the end of OOTP. She gave us one line from HBP and some chapter titles.

That would be reasonable. She might give us one line and maybe some chapter titles. I wouldn’t expect much more than that.

OK, how about the TITLE of the book?
Just the title, please?

At this point, I don’t think she is going to reveal the title. She didn’t want to reveal the title for OOTP – that was an accident. The title for HBP was released because of a hoax. So, I’m no longer hopeful about finding out the title for book 7 in advance. Maybe when she announces that it’s complete, but I’m not getting my hopes up. GOF was called “Book 4” right up to the moment the boxes were opened.

Or will she give us something we don’t know the meaning to, which gets our minds boggling but, is significant to the plot?
Well that’s just teasing isn’t it? Plain teasing.

And that’s probably what we will get – if anything – a teaser. Maybe a line – maybe a chapter title. Possibly a vague reference to an unknown event. She’s going to be very careful in what she reveals at this point.

Please JKR give us something, anything, but something...

At this point, I’d be happy with a teaser. :) A new FAQ poll would be nice. To be completely honest, I would be happy if she would just answer some of the questions about the previous books. Anything to give us something new to talk about.

She'll probably give us a great big controversial Red Herring - meaning a clue that really doesn't mean anything, but it gives everyone a chance to have a speculation festival. :)

My favorite example: "The Lion Man" description before HBP. People thought he was Godric Gryffindor, or The Half-Blood Prince himself. People wrote all sorts of scenarios based on the description. He turned out to be Scrimgeour, the new Minister of Magic. No one even thought of that.

I thought it sounded like a description of either Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin or Roger Daltrey from The Who.

My point is just that getting "something" isn't always getting "something." More stuff doesn't always get us anywhere. The Wombat II didn't really have the revelations we were hoping for, except I was glad to see the comments about werewolves, which I expected.

Well, we should know by now that Jo isn’t going to give away any major details. ;) I think the biggest – that I can recall anyway – was that she revealed that Dumbledore was going to tell Harry everything in OOTP. No details, but that was a big deal - what was he going to tell him?

If she gives us a line – it’s unlikely to relate to a major plot point. But it will be good to at least have something new to discuss.

October 25th, 2006, 9:18 pm
But a title makes it seem real! An FAQ poll is good, but she usually leaves it up for (what seems like) months on end and then we are left wondering what the answers to the other questions were! :)

I do wonder.. why does she have to put her FAQ polls so rarely..? I think the results to the last one were like.. half a year ago!!! *grrr* So, yes, I definitely wish for a new one! (that's the first thing I check when I go to her site to check for updates.. ) Anyway, it just depends on us to chose the best question! ;)

A title of book seven would be good, but I highly doubt it [I'm sooo anxious to see who got it closest at the Title-guessing-contest!]... maybe a chapter title? :D

I don't think she's going to give us any excerpts of the book... would be too good...

But I strongly DO hope she's gong at least to reassure us that the launch of book 7 will be 2007! *can't-wait-anymore!!!*

I didn`t remember that nobody knew the title for GoF, but this is exactly what I expect it will happen for the last book.

I don't think that will be possible for the 7th book with all the hype surrounding it, with GoF although it was a big event it will be nothing compared to the final instalment. Also, I know nothing about how publishing works but surely in the process lots of people will be exposed to the title and it would only take one of them to leak it onto the internet for it to get out.
