Welcome to the third version of the LIMS competition.

The this time's LIMS started weeks ago with the incredible amount of 28 participants, of whom 9 are still in the competion at this time.

The list of all members who signed up here in the beginning, you'll find below. The icon maker remain anonymous unless the reveal themself.

Please remember that you are not allow to join this LIMS. But if you would like to join, you're welcome to do so in the next LIMS. :)

You would like to vote, but not to take part? No problem. Everyone is welcome to vote here.

OK, get some drinks and make yourself comfortable on the Island. :D

PS: Please note the cheesy Island theme I chose to separate this post. :eyebrows:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b185/mad_tenshi/LIMS/00005138.gif

1) Anyone, with any graphics program may join. You don’t not have to be a regular participant in the Graphics Contest thread to participate in this one.

2) Once you enter you must commit fully to the competition. If you fail to submit your graphic for the week you are automatically “voted off the island”.

3) You may not enter the contest once it starts. We will have more LIMS competitions in the future; you may take part in those.

4) Please, do not enter if you are easily offended or if you cannot take constructive criticism. Just remember eventually everyone but one contestant is going to have to have 'leave the island'.

5)When posting to join the contest put "Graphics Rock" as your subject line so I'm assured you have read the rules completely.

6) Please submit only your original work. Make new graphics each week as well and do not post them anywhere on COS until after the weeks round is over.

7) Each week the maintainers of the LIMS thread will come up with a topic. It is then your job to submit you entry to TENSHI by owl. Please in your subject line put the week of the contest we are on. Do not post your entries in the thread or they will be disqualified.

8) Your graphics along with the other contestant’s will posted anonymously on a table to assure that people are voting for the graphic rather then the person. You will then vote for the one you like the least or would “vote off the island”. You must state why you chose this one and offer some constructive criticism. I wish to make this competition a learning experience as well.

9) Anyone may vote at any time even if you were voted out of the competition.

• Submissions start at 6:30 (6.30 am) Sunday GMT, and go until 5:29 (5:29 am) on Saturday GMT. This is a full six days to submit entries to TENSHI via owl.

Each submission period is one week.

A notice will be posted in this thread when submissions open or close.
• From 6:30 am on Saturday GMT to 5:29 am on Sunday GMT, we will be voting. This gives us a full 24 hours each week to vote. All the entries will be displayed in a single post.

Oh my... I was so close to being out this week.

Mine was:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b185/mad_tenshi/LIIMS/5_7.png

I gather that not everyone liked the whole badge/sword combination... I was finding it very hard to find something that I liked. On wednesday, if I remember, I'll post all the other icons that I didn't use for various reasons... there's quite a lot!

To the person who asked; yes, it is Godric's sword, at least it's an image of the replica one that they sell, so I'm assuming it's the one like they used in the films! I had heartbreak over it, to be honest, because it's so beautifully decorated, but that just doesn't come out in such a small icon.

Anyway, to this week: Ravenclaw! And blueness! Yay! My two favourite things. I'm a Ravenclaw, you see. ;)

Bye to whoever was voted out :( All were great, when the first line of icons loaded I got downright panicked! :D Sorry, I totally forgot to vote after postponing it til the evening . Oh well, it's a pity someone had to be voted out anyway.

Mine was the Neville one. I know the colouring was seriously off, but I'm not a good enough iconmaker to get natural colouring from a blue base, and after struggling a lot with it I came to a point where I couldn't try anymore. And if I got it any warmer, it'd turn into a bronze-Neville :D. Biara, thanks for the nice comment and here's the base: base (http://www.mugglenet.com/gallery/displayimage.php?album=1466&pos=596) And generally thanks for all the comments, you're all helping me so much.

I'm confused a bit about the topic too...does it have to be entirely blue or just the main spot ? And CaesarSalad, I'd think we can choose whatever we associate witn Ravenclaw.

No any HP image. The image doesn't necessary has to be related to Ravenclaw. This week its all about the colour.

I don't need to be all blue. Like you said blue should be the main spot of the icon.

Ya, sort of like one person starts with and icon and does something to it, then sends it on to the next person who modifies it and then they send it on etc, etc., and in the end the icon will be fanta-bu-lishious! And if it were done it teams it could be like, survivor style .. the losing team would vote off the person that they thought did the [excuse me for a lack of better word] "worst" job..

You would have to write down the modification that you did to it and send that too everybody too..

Sorry, I know I'm just an observer, but I think I've got the challenge idea down.

You may use ANY HP picture, but the challenge is tha Ravenclaw = Blue.

So you could have a pic of Hermione, a Gryffindor student, but keep in mind that Ravenclaw = Blue, and that the challenge is about Ravenclaw.

Nice idea. However it will be not possible to realise it. Teamwork will mostly lead to twists between the members and they would blame someone else for the flop of their icons. And logistically it would hard to do it either.

So I say no to this idea. But you can open your own thread about it, if you like.

Ravenclaw's house colour is important and not the house itself. For example the icon don't need to have a Ravenclaw student in it or you don't have to make a Ravenclaw student out of another person. It doesn't matter what image you chose. Just focus on Blue. I could have left out the Ravenclaw reference at all, but since blue is a Ravenclaw colour ...

You can tell by the serious answers ppl found them interesting :). And yeah, I think it's interesting too. Esp if ppl made crazy changes resulting in very different icons. But then again, it'd be a bit hard from a practical point of view (and I'd need a lot of courage to destroy a nice,already-made icon:D).

biara
October 25th, 2006, 4:58 pm
i don't know if this is the place for this discussion, anyway...

i believe the easier way to make that colab thing work, is to save the graphics in default image files - .JPG or .PNG - with no layers structure. this way, any program could be used to enhance the image, and the work done before cannot be erased.
i know... layers rules... but that would make things more difficult, and - as Vita would say - there's the challenge :p

Team graphic making wouldn't work in a LIMS competition... It would work in a standalone competition, but only if all users in each team used the same graphics program.

I'll be joining the next LIMS; I forgot to submit my entry way back at the beginning .

Oh my... such pretty blueness! I hadn't realised we were down to nine either.

So, comments then!

1. Pretty. Tiny text... The shading on the Hogwarts crest is nice.
2. I'm sure it's the source picture, but Harry looks really flat! I also can't help feeling that it's a black and white icon on a blue background. But I like it, anyway! :)
3. This one scares me! But in a good way. I'm not keen on the text, but the composition and blending is lovely. :tu:
4. Aw, bless. :) Ron's face looks a little too bright I think. I love the curly swirly stuff.
5. This one is lovely. The light effect is perfect. :tu:
6. Not as blue as the others; almost green in a way! But blue enough. I'm not sure about the sepia repeat of the picture, a la film strip.
7. Hmm... I can't help but wonder what you've done to this one other than just put some tiny text on the picture. Maybe some large text would have helped it, but I'm afriad I just don't like this one much. It lacks... something. :( Sorry.
8. More Fleur! Nice cropping.
9. I think it's funny that you've used the same font as number five! The image here is a tad grainy; maybe try saving as a png file next time instead of a gif, or using a higher quality image to begin with.

Ok, for those reasons I vote off... number seven. Sorry!
But they were all beautiful!

Hmm.. hard to chose this week. I think this week will have to be #1 from my point of view. It seems more black then blue and the coloring doesn't really work with the image.

GAWD. my icon looks lame compared to the rest.

Ehmmm I'm going to vote out #9. I don't have any other reason other than it's kind of dark/dull. But it's at the point in the competition when I run out of things to crit on.

Ohh, back since a long time here. :D I must say that these are getting better and better :)

1: I like the light and shadow effect on the Hogwarts pic.
2: Harry and Hedwig very nice. I like the background and the use of the tiny text (lol I learned what this was here in the LIMS)
3: The theme and the colours are very nice, but I have the impression that it is a bit too much in the icon. Too crushed.
4: Very nice! Love the border (like a stamp) and the use of pic and colour.
5: I like this one very much, even though my first impression wasn't that good. But the quote and the perspective is really good.
6: One of my favs. Very nice
7: Very clear blue colouring and interesting use of the text. I am not sure but it leaves the impression that there is something missing.
8: Simple but effective. Love the pic and the quote
9: The pic and the quote is nice, I like how you arranged the picture and the quote on a border. But overall it's a bit dark, not enough contrast maybe?

I vote for 9

Hmm...this is tough. I'm going to have to vote out 9. The image is too dark and grainy. You might have wanted to put a small gausian blur on it and then sharpen it a pixel or two. Sorry:(

Wow, only nine left!

1. Very nice and simple.
2. The blue coloring is nice.
3. I like the composition a lot and the pictures you chose.
4. Interesting, it looks kind of like a stamp. I’m not too fond of the stamp-like look, but that’s just my personal taste.
5. Very lovely! My favorite this week, I love the subtle coloring and that the blue is not overpowering.
6. Great coloring and composition. :tu:
7. I kind of like the simplicity of this icon. True, maybe more could have been done, but not too much more in my humble opinion.
8. Nice, I like the choice of picture. :)
9. Great pic of Harry. :tu: However, I agree that it looks kind of grainy.

I’m going to vote for 9, so sorry. :(

1. I really like the Hogwarts crest, and how it's shaded, and the castle in the backround. The only complaint would be that the "Hogwarts" text is a little plain in contrast to the shiny emblem, but it's not too bad.
2. I love the text (I have a thing for tiny text). The picture you chose is nice, but it looks a little... weird. I think it's the contrast that I don't really like.
3. I really like how you did this. To me, Dumbledore's expression in this is perfect. Although I think it is just a little too bright between the pensieve and the dark mark.
4.I like almost everything about this one, except the border makes it look like a postage stamp (maybe that's what you were going for... so that might be just my tastes) and Ron looks a little bluer than Hermione, and it might look better if they matched a little more- but really, I think you did an awsome job on this one.
5. Wow! I love the picture and the placement of it and the text. Personally, I can't see anything wrong.
6. I love this one too! The text, the picture, the contrast, and the border are all great. No complaints.
7. Book art! The slanted writing is really nice effect. Even though it seems that not a lot was done to it ( maybe it did take a while and I just can't tell, though), it still looks great with the placement and the text.
8. Very nice contrast, and I like the picture chosen. Maybe it's just me, but it seems a little too bright in the top right corner.
9. ((I saw this when I was looking at them earlier, but now that I want to comment on it, it won't show up. So if I can see it again before voting ends, I'll comment))

So, for the above reasons, my vote goes to #2. Sorry.

Votes!!

1. I like the theme you've chosen, it's very original. It's a nice icon, although it's a bit dark...
2. My favourite this week! I have nothing to say about it... I love it!
3. Nice cropping and blending, but the icon looks a bit 'overcrowded'...
4. Lovely :) I like the border too, very original. Their faces look a bit blurred, but maybe it was meant to be that way?
5. Nice icon. I like the colouring.
6. This one's different from the others, that's nice. I like the border and the text placement. Oh, and the b&w thing at the bottom is nice too. Very original.
7. Simple, yet effective. Nice, although I would've added a border or something... It looks a bit... Incomplete :/
8. Lovely! The image looks a bit plain, though. Some sharpening would have been nice.
9. I like the way you cropped the base image, but it's a bit plain... Maybe if you've played around with colour layers or textures a bit more, it would have been a great icon.

So, for the reasons I already gave, I'm going to vote #9. Sorry!

1. I like it...Although I don't get why you've left those two bits whitish- still great though.
2. Again, really good :). Although for me the combo of b/w on a blue background doesn't seem to fit .
3. A little full, but really well made :D.
4. I love the curly stuff  Althoug hI don't get what 'blue love' means...
5. The lighting's perfect, great icon.
6. Very nice :tu:. I love the way you did the text.
7. Nice, but like others have said, its missing something....
8. I like the text, although it might have looked better at a different angle- that's jusrt me though :).
9. A bit dull, but I like the text :).

This one was mine: http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/week53.jpg

I really like using book art in icons. :)

I agree that mine was pretty plain...all I did was increased the contrast and added the tiny text... I guess that approach would've gone better with this week's theme. I couldn't think of anything to do with it but I really wanted to use the book art...oh well.
Two Questions:
Can we still use other techniques like B&W with color highlight, etc.?
Can we show WIGWs tomorrow, or do we have to wait until next Wednesday?

This one was mine...
http://i103.photobucket.com/albums/m121/jojomalfoy/ronandhermione-1.png
I felt confident this week as I really liked it, but the Stamp version wasn't too popular... :-s unlucky me, its all so typical.. graphics that the footy-people love never get much liking from you HP-people... and the other way around.. :-s

I know Rons face is lighter - but thats cos the entire graphic is lighter on one side...

And the Blue-Love thing... I just used what blue is used for..
Clear Blue (as in clear blue sky) - as in Clear (everyone can see Hr&R <3 eathother)
I feel Blue (as in Blue being sad/down) - as in sad (that we are already to the 6th book and they havent admitet they <3 eathother)
Beathen blue (as is been beaten yellow and blue) - as in beaten (being beaten to the grown by the strong feeling <3)

I probably should be more carefull with things I make, most times only I get it...

I Btw see no problem in sending it in on Friday (so my birthday btw).. Its only tuesday today...

What kind of brushes? When you mean text brushes are border brushes, then nope. Also not these.
Other brushes are allowed. But remember to keep it simple. To put countless funky brushes on your icon is also not the best.

it's hard to make an icon that displays hate in a way that everyone will be able to understand :\. I don't like this.

Ah, well choose a scene from the movie were people clearly show this emotion or doing things where you can for sure say that they hate (or dislike) the other person. There are enough of them. Then you will be on the safe side.

Looks like it's back up...

1) This one shows hate well, but I'm not sure about the red brush in the backgroud.
2) Hmm...it doesn't look like you've changed the picture that much, just the eyes and maybe sharpened it. The eye coloring looks a little awkward, like it seeped into the white part or something...but nice idea.
3) I like the coloring on this one...Harry's face looks a little weird, all scrunched up, but then again, that's not your fault.
4) I really like this one...it really shows the theme well and nice coloring.
5) Nice coloring on this one...I think there's a small blue border that doesn't match very well (just my opinion), but otherwise good icon.
6) Nice icon, but it seems to show pain rather than hate...unless you're referring to Voldemort?
7) I think the contrast on this icon brings out "hate" more...the effect it has on her eyes especially. I like the overall coloring too.

Edit: Oops, forgot to vote :p . I'll have to vote for #2, for the reasons above. Sorry! :(

1. Excellent job. :tu: I like the coloring very much.
2. Great choice of subject - shows hatred very well. I'm not sure about the coloring though - it looks a little dull.
3. Though Harry's face looks a little wierd (which is due to the picture itself), I like it. The coloring is very nice.
4. Like 2, the icons shows hatred quite well.
5. This one's my favorite this week. Excellent coloring and cropping!
6. I agree with Kitunen that it seems to show pain more than hatred, but I like it nonetheless.
7. The effect makes Hermione's face looks a little wierd, but I like the coloring.

Apparently refreshing the page over and over is the only way to go. Ugh, I'm still mad about my computer breaking down right at the start of this. There have been some really good topics. But anyway, votng:

1 - I like this one. Nice inclusion of the red.
2 - Don't like this one so much. His skin looks a bit weird and his eyes don't quite look right. Good choice of character, though.
3 - Nice colouring, and good choice.
4 - Again, good choice, and I like the colouring, again.
5 - Nice cropping; this one and #1 are my favourites.
6 - Agree with Kitunen and RLF - it still works, though.
7 - Don't like this one very much ... I think it's the eyes.

2. Argh! Tom is giving me the evil eye!
3. Nice colouring, but Harry has a very odd look on his face!
4. More Tom! Nice colouring again.
5. I think she looks sad, rather than hateful...
6. Pain, rather than hate? But nice colours.
7. Definitely hateful, but I don't like the colouring. Sorry. Looks a bit... oil-painting for me. Hermione's eyes have rings under them like she hasn't been sleeping!

Good job at doing anything this week! That was a hard topic.

Graphically they all seem pretty good to my untrained eye. Hate wise, only 1,3 and 5 really seem to portray it. 4 and 6 seem to be more pain than hate.
2 is just creepy and Hermoine looks more bitter than hateful in 7.

I think I am going to have to vote for 7. The picture is a little too dark and I don't see the hate in it.

5 is my favourite. I was hoping someone would use that scene!

1-I really like the expression on Draco's face, though the red dot kind of throws off the graphic for me
2-In this one it looks as though Riddle has a stomachache, I don't really get the feel of any hate:no:
3-I really like the coloring on this one and Harry's expression is great!
4-Again, good expression, though there's just something off I cant really place
5-Yes, Yes, Yes!!!! Superb picture and good ajustments!:)
6-I don't really like it how part of the arm is red, you might have wanted to make it blue
7-The contrast is way too high, though good pic

I'm going to have to vote off 2, just because it doesn't really look like hate to me, it seems less intense than the others. Sorry!:(

1. Wow. You've caught Draco at a great facial expression, and I think the splotch of red is a really nice touch for the subject.
2. It's another nice picture, with a kind of quiet intensity. I'm not sure what you did to his eyes, but they seem to be the only bright things in the picture. I'm sure it sohws hate, it's just not as obvious a kind of hate as some of the other pictures. I think that what you did to his eyes really made that feeling stand out, at least to me. I think the darkness of the general icon helps to a) show the intensity in his eyes and b) symbolize hate as a dark emotion.
3. PERFECT hate symbol. Harry with his wand at Sirius' throat. I think that's a really great perspective. You've even made the icon have a more greenish tinge overall - more Slytherin like :D.
4. Another great capture. I would definitely be hating someone who was in the process of... um... pixelling me apart? You did a great job graphic-wise, with containing the shine of his explosion.
5. This one I'm not really sure this one is about hate, that's because we all know the context. If we didn't, maybe we would think that she really does hate whoever she's looking at. You did make Hermione stand out, it seems to me.
6. This one seems to be more pain than hate, but I suppose it counts as Voldy's hate, wanting to hurt Harry so much. Did you do something to redden the ends of his fingers? I dunno, you've made the hand/arm of Voldy just EMANATE evilness, and that's a pretty hard job to do- you don't have his face, the most expressive part of his body. I think this might be my favorite- the indirect consequence of hate, I suppose.
7. Wow. You've really made Hermione look darker, made her look like she genuinely hates whatever she's looking at in this picture. I know you must have done some work on this icon, because she never has this much makeup on in the movie to make her look that dark, especially around the eyes. Right up there with my favorite.

So, I'm debating who to vote out this week. Since the challenge was "hate," I'm afraid I'm going to have to vote for number 5. It's a great graphic, but just doesn't really demonstrate hate. I'm sorry... and congrats for making it this far.

yaay. i was worried I wouldn't get to vote because lj wasn't loading at work.

1. yay! a flare! I love flares. buuuut, as much as I like flares, this one isn't working for me...I dunno. I'm being picky, because flares aren't (to me) supposed to look placed :\ if you get my meaning.
2. I don't know about this one. It doesn't seem to spell "HATE" to me. He looks more like he's about to hurl if you ask me...but that might be something like "god I hate mushrooms. I feel like puking". Is his skin blurred :S?
3. Definitely one of my favorites this week. I love the colouring on it, and the scene used. It's like "oh look, harry hates sirius" but then he ends up being one of his best pals. interesting.
4. My other favorite this week! I love the varying colours and the cropping. Definitely shows lots and lots of hate.
5. Pretty colouring. But maybe pretty isn't the thing here. Also she looks like she has a fever with the reddish cheeks :|
6. I don't know...I'm not really digging this one. Harry looks a bit like a vampire and the colours seem (for lack of a word) awkward. I would have expected a harsher colour than blue for it.
7. I don't really like this one (sorry to be so blunt). But she looks really burned (not sunburned...graphic burned) and the contrast is just waay to strong for me (note this day, I will never say that again, hopefully. I'm a contrast beast.)

Sooo I'm gonna go ahead and vote for #7. For reasons above. No hard feelings, kay?

Oh yah, congrats to everyone for making it so far! :)

I'm gonna vote for 5, I'm sorry. Graphically it's really nice. but I just don't feel hate in it - Hermione looks more sad than hateful and the whole icon is not as intense as you'd expect (though I do love the colouring, just not for this challenge). Sorry :(
I really like 1 (without the red spot :\) , 3 and 4, beautifully done, and the choice of pic in 2. But all of them are good, I can't say I dislike any of them.

LIMS III - Challenge week six
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b185/mad_tenshi/LIMS/00005138.gif

Topic: The Houses - Huffelpuff
Technic: No animation. Rest allowed

Size: Avatar

Description:
The Sorting Hat: "For Hufflepuff, hard workers were"

Hard workers the actors are. Without them it would be impossible to bring the figures in the book on the big screen. This time icon must show a actor picture. No picture from any movie. Just a normal every-day-pic. I.e. interviews, promo tours etc.

*sob*
That's me out!
But then, I knew that it would be when I submitted that icon. It was, I have to admit, completely rubbish. But I just couldn't think of anything else. I really dislike negative topics. I'm such a positive person, you see!

So, here's my 'Time on LIMS' for LIMS III...

Week One: Remus black and white with colour highlight:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f64/Sarah74656/LIMS/Remus2.png
I really liked this image. I love Remus, but found it very hard to get pictures of him that you could colour a section of effectively. Then I hit upon the idea of a Gryffindor tie... :)

Week Two: From Behind:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f64/Sarah74656/LIMS/Ginny2.png
This has to be the most loved icon I ever made. Seriously. I got so many positive comments about it. I was really chuffed, because I hadn't really planned it to be like that. I just found the picture, liked it, and played with the contrast and stuff... :)

Week Three: Luna:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f64/Sarah74656/LIMS/Luna.png
Yay, Luna! I did quite a few different Luna icons, because I was desperately trying to do something that no-one else would do. In the end I went with the Ravenclaw angle.

Week Four: Humour:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f64/Sarah74656/LIMS/Humourtxt.png
Hehehe.... This one still makes me laugh. It was hard to think of something that everyone would find funny, but I do like cheerful icons. Also, Voldie's cloak was actually really hard to do! But I was very glad of the way it came out.

Week Five: Gryffindor:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f64/Sarah74656/LIMS/Gryffindor.png
Another week where I did loads of icons. This one wasn't unanimously liked, but I survived.

Week Six: Ravenclaw/Blue:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f64/Sarah74656/LIMS/Hogwartsblue.png
I quite like this one, actually. I think I'll keep it as my avatar for a while!

Week Seven: Slytherin:
http://i45.photobucket.com/albums/f64/Sarah74656/LIMS/Tom2.png
A total piece of rubbish, but what can you do? I couldn't be inspired by the topic. And people commented that they didn't think I'd done much to the image; actually, I spent ages on it, rearranging his mouth and stuff. I did absolutely loads to this picture, you just can't tell. Which is good in a way. Unfortunately, it was still rubbish!

Ah well! That's me gone for now. But don't you worry. I'll be back for the next LIMS! :D

I'm not really into this topic, I have no idea for it :-\. I like the connection Hufflepuff-hard workers-actors, it's just that I find it a bit difficult to focus on the actors and not on their characters. Oh well, some idea will come my way someday:D.

1-Good picture of Emma, though I don't really like the font on the side, it looks kind of anciend Greek
2-I'm not 100% sure what you were going for here but the blue inset could be done without
3-Definately my favorite! Great picture and the filmstrip works great!
4-I really like the lighting on this one, though I'm not sure if you're supposed to be able to read the text or not:shrug:
5-:lol:Great picture minipulation, though I don't really like the text placement
6-I really like the use of brushes and the black sidebar, good job!

So, my rankings(best being the first and descending from there)
3
4
6
1
5
And I'm going to have to vote out...#2. Sorry:(

November 11th, 2006, 1:10 am
Voting time, yay!
1. I love the colouring on this one, that blue-ish effect is really nice. But there's something about this icon that doesn't fit into place; I think it's the font used.
2. Nice idea and colouring, but it looks a bit overcrowded to me.
3. I like the filmstrip idea, and the font used.
4. Nice, warm icon. But Rupert's eyes look a bit eerie :S
5. It looks a bit simple for my taste; some sharpening or brushes could have achieved a better icon.
6. My favourite; I love the picture placement and the picture used, but it's a bit dark overall.

So, my vote goes to #5... Sorry!

BabyWerewolf
November 11th, 2006, 1:16 am
Comments:
#1 - It's a good pic and I like the font, but it looks a bit odd how the side of her face is cut off.
#2 - I like the compostition, it looks quite well put together, if a tad random
#3 - I like the composition and the text, but I htink the contrast or something is too high on the picture - the shadows are a bit dark and it looks slightly evil...
#4 - aaaaaaaaaaaawwwww. Cute as hell! Lovely soft colours and lighting and the text really fits
#5 - simple, but quite nice. the text is good.
#6 - nice colours and composition, and I like the swirly brush up the side.

I think my vote has to go to #3. Sorry.

Fave: 4. I love that icon!

CaesarSalad
November 11th, 2006, 2:09 am
1. Great composition going on here, but I'm not really digging the colouring.
2. the blue square thing seems a bit off colour compared to the rest, but overall nice and clean looking
3. I don't know if "precious" was really the correct word choice here. she looks like a demon :P. It looks a bit oversaturated/high contrast.
4. definitely cute. :) It's an incredible icon, but it's just not my favorite styley-do...I don't know?
5. squee-worthy. I love this one to pieces.
6. another inset, eh? awesome. the colour looks a bit...i don't know, bland? I can tell it was just the picture. I'm also not really digging the swirly on the side, they just aren't my thing.

Now I know that I said a lot of things "aren't my thing", but that won't affect my vote, see, because I'm gonna vote for #1. It's just too much of a dramatic transition from white to yellow.

Kitunen
November 11th, 2006, 4:03 am
Comments:

1) I like the font, tiny text, and cropping, although Emma looks a little too yellow.
2) I like the inset and various text elements, but I think the rainbow squares seem out of place.
3) I like the filmstrip effect and the text, but the filmstrip on the left looks a little rough around the edges.
4) I like the background and the text, and the colors are nice.
5) Funny idea, and I like the text and subtle blueish coloring.
6) I like the inset here too, and the colors and brushes are nice...the coloring is a little dull, but I think that it goes better with the icon altogether that way.

So my vote goes to #2. Sorry! :(

1) Pretty pretty.. its nothing special, but its just so clean and pretty that you have to love it! Really nice work.
2) Gets LOADS of credit for dearing to try something new, and i think it looks great! :D Loving that style really... KIU
3) The style is just plain perfect! :D I always loved that style..
4) Nice enough, good colours and border but doesn't stand out like the once before it.
5. Credit for nice isea, also turned out great! :D 10/10...
6) Not sure about it, look good but a little messy with all the dots. still loveable tho!

Sorry to whoever it is..
4 gets my off vote.
It just doesnn't stand out like the others.. but it is a GOOD ava!

It's so hard to vote at this stage when they're all so good! Here are my thoughts:

#1 I dislike the crop which leaves part of one eye. The icon seems to have no focus but the colouring really suits the image :)
#2 Looks a bit untidy but I like that she's looking at the cutout. I think the focus of the image should be higher.
#3 Nice cropping but all her beauty has vanished in the harsh contrast.
#4 Bright, dreamy, beautiful, subtle and nicely cropped. I love it :tu:
#5 Great picture choice and cropping. Could have been brighter?
#6 Very sophisticated-looking icon. I like the lack of text and quirky photo.

My vote goes to: #2

evil_mushroom
November 11th, 2006, 9:42 pm
Voting is so hard, I love them all  I think voting is more and more about personal taste, when they're all graphically so good. That said, I'll vote for 2, I'm very sorry - it's really good, just that it looks a bit cluttered with the coloured squares and the blue cutout right in the centre, which kinda blends - a bit too much imo - into the rest. Otherwise I love the style and the soft colouring of the main pic.

My fav in colouring is 1 (not a fan of the cropping though) and in composition, 6 (although the swirly brushes aren't my thing, they work here). And of course 5 rules in the 'choice of pic' section :D.

It's so hard to vote when all the people still in are so good!

#1 - The cropping is a bit weird but I like the colouring.
#2 - I'd like it so much more without the inset image. It's a bit crowded, what with the inset and the rainbow bar and the texts. Really like the colouring of the main image.
#3 - Nice text and film strip effect, but the contrast is a bit much, her face looks a bit strange.
#4 - Very dreamy. I like how everything is set out, and, again, the colouring.
#5 - Great choice of picture. Simple but effective, and I love the text. This one and #4 are my faves this week.
#6 - I like the colouring, again, don't really like the inset (never have been my sort of thing) but I do like the detail on the side.

I'm going to vote off #2, sorry. It's just too overcrowded; otherwise, it'd be a brilliant icon.

Wow, such excellent icons all around!

It's so hard to choose, but I think I'm going to vote for 3 because I'm not a fan of the coloring. I love the composition of the icon though! My favorite this week is probably 4, followed closely by 6.

AchelRay
November 12th, 2006, 12:48 am
This is difficult though I think I'll have to say #2,

1) The coloring and bar and the side really work though I think you cut off the face too early.
2) I don't think the inset really works here and the little square things to the side aren't exactly my favorite.
3) The film strip effect... I've never figure out quite how to do it but I love the way it works with this picture.
4) Nothing really except the blue-green window doesn't fit the rest of the icon very well.
5) This one made me laugh when I first saw it. Kodak moment is right on there.
6) I like the little swirly red dot things on this one, it just seems to fit.

No real favorites this week because they're all so good.

1: A really great picture- you've cropped it really well and I think the large print EMMA at the side really works for it, as well as the tiny text.
2: I like the little e on the right side, as well as the main picture- but the black and white inset is really putting me off. I think that you should have just left that part off. There's just something about it, I dunno... that rubs me the wrong way.
3. It's not my favorite picture of Emma, put I like the filmstrip style. Also, if you wanted to put a word at the bottom there, I'm not sure I would have used "precious," I probably would have done "determined" or something like that, to reinforce the "hard-worker" part of the challenge.
4. A great picture, and a nice job of cropping it. I like how the background is (I think) book art, and not set or anything. Then you'res till tying Rupert to the movies, but in a sort of dreamy way, as the background is a bit blurry. But it fits really well! Good job.
5. Well, Dan certainly works hard on the movies, and is that Ralph Fiennes trying to bite his ear off? He's working hard to keep a straight face, for sure... :D I think my favorite icon this week...
6. I do like this one as well - with the stage curtain on the left, I think, the little red swirls, and a good picture. The inset was pretty well done as well, as it's just a bit lighter than the original picture, so it doesn't contrast it too much, it complements it well, I think.

I'm going to have to vote out #2 for the above reasons.

Well there goes me :) I'm kind of glad because I've been having loads of trouble coming up with ideas and even more trouble coming up with time.

Soo...RECAP TIME.
Week 1
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b394/Caesar-Salad/Avatars/lims3_1_lupin.png
If I remember correctly this one got the most compliments :\ which is strange because it's so out of my style range so therefore, I hated it.

Week 2
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b394/Caesar-Salad/Avatars/lims3_2_ronherm.png
Definitely one of my favorites...even if the colouring wasn't your favorites. Colouring is mainly what I focus on. Oh, and contrast too.

Week 3

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b394/Caesar-Salad/Avatars/lims3_3_luna.png
>.< I didn't like this one at all. I hated the idea that everyone would be using the same image, it really scared me and I thought I was doomed.

Week 4
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b394/Caesar-Salad/Avatars/lims3_4_animals.png
Blah. Got lots of hate for this one. I attempted a funky colouring thing I learned at the wrong time.

Week 5
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b394/Caesar-Salad/Avatars/lims3_5_hermione2.png
More odd colouring! But I actually liked this one. I was ready to save it when I realized that I was missing a border...and it definitely shows that it was a last minute thing.

Week 6
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b394/Caesar-Salad/Avatars/lims3_6_fleur.png
I hated this one too :\ it was just ick for me. I couldn't get a blue colouring I like.

Week 7
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b394/Caesar-Salad/Avatars/lims3_7_herm.png
Yaya. I know, it's not hateful enough. But I looked through what seemed like millions of screencaps and couldn't find good portrayals of hate that weren't on the verge of laughability. More weird colouring, but I liked this one too.

Week 8
http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b394/Caesar-Salad/Avatars/lims3_8_evanna.png
I whipped that one up quickly on Thursday, since I'd been away for the majority of the week. I dunno. I actually like it because I did something out of my box, it's more complicated than just a coloured image and a light spot or tiny text. I knew I was up against (very) fierce competition.

Aaand I'm going to stop rambling now. I'm getting over the flu and am getting dizzy staring at the screen. I shall be back on Friday/Saturday or whenever voting starts for me. Peace.

1) I really like the tiny text and the background, and the coloring on McGonagall looks good, but she looks a little squished (probably an effect of the cropping though).
2) I like the coloring and the tiny text.
3) I didn't get what it had to do with the theme at first, but JKR was an English/French teacher before Harry Potter was published. I like the blueish coloring and the text, and although I usually don't like stripes, they're ok here.
4) I like how you turned the cropping requirement into pictures, and I like the striped border on the left. I like the color, but it seems a little "cheerful" for Snape....but not a major problem.
5) The coloring on her clothes is ok, but her face is too bright and yellow...I like the background, but the text looks a little squished (maybe just the font?).

So, for the reasons above, I vote for #5. Sorry! :(

1. Nice coloring. I like the font the “M” is in.
2. Nicely done, I love the text insert.
3. Very nice composition and great “JKR” text. The only thing I’m not too fond of are the stripes – I think if they’d been toned down a bit it would have been really nice.
4. My favorite this week. I really like the way you made Snape into pictures. I also love the coloring.
5. I like the cropping, but I’m not a fan of the coloring or the text.

Aww I don’t want to vote, but I’m going to go with #5 :(

1. nice, bold colouring, and very nice text (simple, but still awesome). Very awesome icon.
2. I like this one also. My first impression was "whoa, cramped" but the crampiness makes it even better.
3. great idea, but there's a few things i'm not really digging. i'm not really a fan of the blue border type thing, and i don't really like the block text, it sort of ruins the flow of a very nice icon.
4. definitely interesting! but I would've tried to make his face match more with the greeney-bluey background.
5. A wee bit too faded. Though I do like how you got her pursed lips in there :D

Sooo now I'm gonna go ahead and vote for #3.

In order from fav to least fav

1-I love the brush you used for the text and even though you cropped it it still looks like it could be a screencap.
2-Great brushes and coloring
4-Good cropping though I'm not a fan of the bkgrd
5-Good coloring but I don't like the font
And I have to vote off...#3-I don't realy like the colors or the lines. Plus the border just isn't working. Good idea though! Sorry:(

Hard week. Everyone has done such a good job.
1) I like the M and the way it's put there.
2) I really like this one the way the coloring is and all.
3) I like this one, the way the blocks and the text are just does it for me.
4) Not as good the texture was a good idea but it seems to blue-green for me.
5) Don't exactly like the text or the setup on this one. The coloring is okay but it's not my favorite.

I'm going to have to say number 5 for the reasons above.

#1 - Nice. The bright green-colours go well with the red lettering, and the composition/cropping is nice too.
#2 - Gorgeous. I love the colouring and the text.
#3 - though the bar in the centre with the hands and text block is nice, I don't like the parts around the outside of that -a bit too blue and plain.
#4 - Good crops, really fits the topic. I like the text, but maybe the colour scheme should have been a bit stronger? The blue-green loks slightly washed out.
#5 - nice idea, but I don't like the text. The font looks funny and a bit squashed, and I'm not keen on the green block behind it. that might have been OK if it wasn't so simple that the text was the main focus. You need a really nice text to get away with that.

So...this was a tough one, there wasn't really one I didn't like. None of them ws bad, but I think #5 was the least good, and I'm voting that one off.
sorry #5

#1 I like the contrasting brightness of the background with the muted colours of McGonagall.
#2 Very clever choice of image, Dumbledore is cropped off, and then you've also got McGonagall effectively cropped by his arm :tu: Good colouring too.
#3 It's an unusual crop but the topic was a Hogwarts teacher, so this doesn't follow the rules.
#4 I like the sellotape idea and the composition is neat.
#5 I really dislike the crop, but that was the rule. There is very little texture left in her face, but I like the 'McG' :)

I vote for #3 for ignoring the instructions.

Topic: Out of character

Technic: Black and white with one coloured light-texture. NOTE: No coloured highlight!

Size: Avi

Describtion: Pick an image of a character where they do things they usually wouldn't do, things which absolutly don't fit the character, and make an icon out of it. Like Snape smiling (not in a nasty way) etc.

Question: Are manipulations allowed to make a character appear out of character?
Yes they are. :)

Question...could you give an example of the technique? Thanks in advance :).
That would be like this here:

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b185/mad_tenshi/LIIMS/examplew51.png

For this icon I used this lighttexture
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b185/mad_tenshi/LIIMS/06.jpg

But there are many different textures like
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b185/mad_tenshi/LIIMS/t70.jpg http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b185/mad_tenshi/LIIMS/12-3.png and http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b185/mad_tenshi/LIIMS/lighttexture.jpg

ETA: The shape I mean. The brush should be one-coloured, different colour tones are allowed too. ie. texture which contains dark red and bright red.

I get mine from livejournal. Where you can download them from other people.

You put the texture on the icon as a new layer and set it (mostly) to screen or other setting.

This give you effects like above or other depending on the texture you use.

if you want you can make your own, it's actually very easy to make simple ones. I usually just scribble around with colours,smudge/blur it to how I want and then set it to screen or lighten.

We're to the final three out of 28 already? Wow...They're all so good. This is so hard. I think the first one is the least good though (if that makes any sense whatsoever). The glow around him is a little too weird for me. It seems like he's being portrayed as angelic and I think that's too much with the smile going already.

November 27th, 2006, 2:14 am
Well, that was me out :(. I was surprised I even made it this far, since I just started making graphics this July/August. I'm really looking forward to LIMS IV. :)

Here's my week-by-week summary...

Week 1: Lupin in B&W with color highlight
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/week1.jpg I think I was really rushed this week, with school starting and everything. I sort of liked this one, but I agreed with the comments that the color was barely visible.

Week 2: Simple icon, from the back
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/limswk2.jpg I wasn't really happy with this one, and now that I look back the brushes seem a little busy...I do like the coloring though.

Week 3: Luna Lovegood
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/lunaentry3.jpg Unused: http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/lunaentry.jpg
I actually really liked this one, mostly because of the background. The feathering on Luna gave an unintentional bluish glow around her, but I actually really liked it. I do agree that the border wasn't needed. It also looks like the text glow was diminished a bit with the blue overlay, but I liked it overall. The unused one was only slightly different, no blue overlay.

Week 4: Humor, no border
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/week4entry.jpg Unused: http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/pottermort.jpg

I think these two, both the used one and the unused one, were two of my favorites from the whole competition. I really like the B&W with color highlight technique. And Pottermort is pretty much self explanatory.

Week 5: Gryffindor, must have a border
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/week5.jpg This was another one of my favorites...the first time I used tiny text I think...I like the colors in this one too.

Week 6: Ravenclaw, represented by blue
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/week53.jpg Unused: http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/week52.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/week6.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/week54.jpg I like using book art in icons :). I agree this one was pretty plain, but I do like the blue color. The unused ones are pretty much just different variations of tiny text.

Week 7: Slytherin, represented by hate
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/hateicon.jpg I really don't know why I made the contrast so high...she was pretty washed out in the original screencap, but I do think the contrast was waaay too high.

Week 8: Hufflepuff, represented bu hard-working actors/actresses
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/radcliffefiennes.jpg Unused: http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/danradcliffeavatar.jpg http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/week7.jpg
I actually like all of these, but I went for the one with the humor...I like this one a lot, although I think I should've colored it a little more.

Week 9: Hogwarts teacher, extraordinary cropping
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/jkricon.jpg
...heh...I got excited about my idea and completely forgot the "Hogwarts teacher" part...oops. I did like it though .

Week 10: Out of character, B&W with colored light texture
http://i68.photobucket.com/albums/i24/kitunen/limsooc.jpg :sigh:
I definately over-tweaked his smile...I tried making my own light texture, but it didn't work too well. The smile was definately the main problem though. Oh well :).

Good luck to the two finalists! :)
